Tuesday (Jan. 20, 2004) at the Good Samaritan Center in
St. Ansgar.

PAUL ANDREW CHRISTENSEN
BELMOND — Communications Petty Officer 1st class Paul
Andrew Christensen passed away Dec. 8, 2003, at his home
in Brentwood, Mass.
Funeral service for Paul Christensen will be held 1:30
p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Belmond with
Pastor Mike Druhl officiating. Burial will take place in
Belmond Cemetery. Military graveside rites are under the
direction of the U.S. Navy funeral detachment from Great
Lakes Naval Base in Chicago, Ill.
Friends may greet the family from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at
the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick’s Lane S.,
Belmond, and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Memorials may be made to the Navy Relief Society.
Paul was born on Jan. 22, 1965, the son of Paul E. and the
late Etta Ann (Leonard) Christensen at the U. S. Naval
Hospital in Oakland.
He attended schools in Albuquerque, N.M., Manassas, Va.,
Dixon, Mo., and Loyal, Okla.
Paul attended the University of Oklahoma in Norman prior
to entering the U.S. Navy.
During his career in the Navy, Paul received his bachelors
degree in history from the University of Maryland, and a
masters degree in international business from Troy State
University.
He attended many service schools, including the Defense
Language School (Russian) in Monterey, Calif., and
communications school in Pensacola, Fla., four times.
While in the Navy, he served throughout the world
including Keflavik, Iceland; Edsel, Scotland; Sasebo
Japan; Yokosuka, Japan; Washington, D.C.; Pensacola, Fla.;
San Diego, Calif., and too many other places to remember.
Paul served on the flagship USS LaSalle in the Gulf of
Bahrain for the flagging of Kuwaiti freighters; and served
in the first Gulf War.
Paul was a life member of the Belmond VFW.
Paul is survived by his wife, Rachel, and stepdaughter,
Rosemary, who reside in the Philippines; father, Paul E.
and stepmother, Alice C., of Belmond; sister Paula (Joe)
Powell of Eagle Grove; stepsisters, Paulette (Tom)
Bridges-Crane of Dows, Carolyn (Steve) Meinke of Iowa
City; stepbrother, Dennis (Sherri) Leach of Spirit Lake;
many aunts, nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Paul is preceded in death by his mother, Etta Ann
Christensen of Belmond; his maternal and paternal
grandparents, and an uncle.

GARNER — Wilma F. Erdman, 79, of Garner, died Tuesday
(Jan. 20, 2004) at the Concord Care Center, Garner.

CLEAR LAKE — Ella Martha Morrison, 97, of 625 14th Ave. N.
in Clear Lake, passed away Sunday (Jan. 18, 2004) at the
Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear
Lake, with Monsignor Robert Hogan officiating.
Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service
Thursday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel.

Ella was born Sept. 21, 1906, in Fessenden, N.D., the
daughter of Peter and Katrina (Kemmer) Klindworth.
Ella married Dow A. Morrison on Feb. 27, 1928, at St.
Paul, Minn.
Ella designed hats for a millenary shop in St. Paul and
then worked as seamstress for Dayton’s department store
until retiring.
Ella moved to Clear Lake in March of 2000.
She enjoyed both flower and vegetable gardening.
Ella is survived by her children, James Morrison and his
wife, Ophelia “Babe”, of Clear Lake, Lorena K. Johnson and
her husband, Robert, of San Diego, Calif., and Joseph
Morrison and his wife, Michelle “Mike”, of Sioux Falls,
S.D.; 21 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and 20
great-great-grandchildren.
Ella was preceded in death by her parents, one son, D.
Frank Morrison, three brothers, Fred, August and Otto; and
four sisters, Clara, Louise, Dorothy and Rose.

LIONEL W. OLSON
OSAGE — Lionel W. Olson, 77, of Osage, died Monday (Jan.
19, 2004) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in
Osage.
Lionel was born Dec. 8, 1926, in Bonesteel, S.D., the son
of Emil and Margaret (Hartsock) Olson. He attended school
in Omaha, Neb. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War
II.
He married Muriel Wright on Aug. 26, 1950, in Osage.
Lionel was employed by Western Electric, Inc. as a central
office telephone equipment installer. While he was
employed there, he also served as a union steward for the
Communication Workers of America.
He was a member and past Commander of Osage American
Legion Post #278 and its burial honor guard, a life member
of the American Legion, a life member of the Veterans of
Foreign Wars, and a member of the Osage Masonic Lodge 102
A.F. & A.M.
Lionel assisted with Boy Scout Troop 63 and received the
Order of the Arrow from the Boy Scouts of America.
He assisted with the Osage Precisionnaires Drum and Bugle
Corps, working with the rifle and flag corps.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First
United Methodist Church in Osage, with the Rev. Jay
Amundson officiating. Interment will be in the Osage
Cemetery with military honors at the grave by Osage
American Legion Post #278.
Visitation will be 4:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the
Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage and one hour before
the service Friday at the church.
He is survived by five sons, Douglas Olson and his wife,
Linda, of Waterloo, Richard Olson and his wife, Carol, of
Waterloo, Jeffrey Olson and his wife, Lory, of Hutchinson,
Minn., William Olson of Hutchinson, Minn., and James Olson
of Tampa, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter,
Barbara Wright in 2002; one sister, Margaret McFarland;
and one brother, Ronald Olson.

BRITT — Emmanuel Peterson, 91, of Britt, died Tuesday
(Jan. 20, 2004) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in
Britt.
Funeral service will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the
Upper Flat Evangelical Free Church, 6 miles north and 1
mile west of Britt, with Mr. Jason Boomgarden officiating.
Burial will take place in the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

GERALD ‘JERRY’ J. REUBLIN
MASON CITY — Gerald (Jerry) J. Reublin, 88, of Mason City,
died Saturday (Jan. 17, 2004) at the Good Shepherd Care
Center in Mason City.
There will be no visitation. Private family graveside
service and inurnment will be held in the Memorial Park
Cemetery, Highway 122, Mason City, at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family in
his memory.
Gerald J. Reublin was born on Aug. 23, 1915, in Mt.
Sterling, Wis., the son of John and Ethel (Haskins)
Reublin. He served in the Iowa National Guard for six
years and the active Army for two years in Japan. He was
honorably discharged in 1946.
He married Pearl M. Leegard on June 9, 1937, in Mason
City. They were happily married for 57 years until her
passing in 1992. He was a dedicated, hard-working man as
an over-the-road truck driver until retiring in 1975.
In his retired life he enjoyed camping and fishing. For
nearly 20 years he and his wife lived in Mason City for
six months; and Donna, Texas, for the winter months in
their RV.
He fished in Clear Lake, Northern Minnesota, and Ontario,
Canada. He also enjoyed socializing at the VFW in which he
was a member.
He will be remembered as a kind-hearted man who was a
great father, grandfather, great-grandfather, neighbor and
friend.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children,
Jack L. Reublin and his wife, Patricia, of Phenix, City,
Ala., Clifford J. Reublin and his wife, Laura, of Mason
City; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; a
brother, Robert Reublin of Fairfield, Calif.; and many
nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives and
friends.

City, died Tuesday (Jan. 20, 2004) at his home.

Decorah, with the Rev. James M. Magelssen of Trinity
Lutheran Church of Mason City officiating. Private family
interment will be in Old West Paint Creek Cemetery in
rural Waukon at a later date.

ORLAND T. ROSSUM
OSAGE — Orland T. Rossum, 92, of Osage, died Tuesday
(Jan. 20, 2004) at Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.
Orland was born Sept. 25, 1911, in Rock Township,
Mitchell County, the son of Iver and Ida (Ask) Rossum.
He received his education in a Rock Township rural
school.
On Nov. 20, 1935, he married Ruth H. Spaanum at Osage.
Orland farmed until his retirement in 1976, when he
and his wife moved to Osage. Feeding his cattle,
fishing trips in northern Minnesota, and watching his
granddaughters grow up were some of his greatest joys.
Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at
the First United Methodist Church in Osage, with the
Rev. Jay Amundson officiating. Interment will be in
the Osage Cemetery.
Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Champion-Bucheit
Funeral Home in Osage, and one hour before the service
at the church on Saturday.
He is survived by one son, Vaughn Rossum and his wife,
Carol, of Osage; two granddaughters, Karen Stitt and
her husband, David, of Rogers, Ark., and Diane Selvig
and her husband, Mark, of Eau Claire, Wis.; two
great-granddaughters, Josie and Lily Stitt.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife,
Ruth Rossum, in 1994.

MERLE ARTHUR HANSON
OSAGE — Merle Arthur Hanson, 85, of Osage, died
Tuesday (Jan. 20, 2004) at the Osage Rehabilitation
and Health Care Center.
Merle was born Sept. 22, 1918, at Inwood, Iowa, the
son of Fred B. and Anna (Thorvaldsen) Hanson. They
moved to Logan, Iowa, in 1924, where Merle graduated
from high school in 1936. He then moved with his
family to Granger, Iowa.
He attended Iowa State University for three years.
He was drafted by the U.S. Army in January 1942. He
received his training and commission at Fort Knox,
Ky., and as 2nd Lt. was assigned to the 2nd Armored
Division.
Merle served 34 months in North Africa, Sicily and
Central Europe. He was awarded six Battle Stars, two
Bronze Stars, and one Arrowhead for the Invasion of
Sicily. He was given the Belgium Fourragare and
Presidential Unit Citations.
He was also involved in Invasion of France on “D-Day
Plus 3”, and was given the French Liberty Normandy
Medal. He was released from active duty in January
1946.
Merle served in the Army Reserves for 25 years,
attaining the rank of Lt. Col. He recently received a
Certificate of Liberation of France.
After the war, Merle at-tended South Dakota State
College, where he received his degree in agriculture
in 1947.
He married Hazel Olson on Aug. 30, 1947, at Inwood.
Merle worked at the Abbott Laboratories in North
Chicago, Ill., for two years. They then moved to
Osage, where he farmed for 18 years.
He worked at White Farm in Charles City as a chemist-ry
lab technician until his retirement in 1985.
Merle served on many boards and committees at Our
Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage, including the
Scholarship Committee for a number of years.
He also taught Sunday School and was Sunday School
Superintendent.
He was active in Farm Bureau work, was a member of the
Osage V.F.W., Osage American Legion, and the Sons of
Norway, where he held various offices.
He followed many sports, receiving a plaque in 1978
for “Outstanding Moral and Spiritual Support” he had
displayed towards athletes.
Merle was an avid stamp collector since 1932.
He loved gardening and the outdoors, including bird
watching. He was an avid reader of world news and
sports. He treasured his faith in Christ and his
family.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Our
Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage, with the Rev.
Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating andflag
presentation by Osage American Legion Post #278.
Interment will be at noon on Monday, Jan. 26, at the
Richland Cemetery at Inwood.
Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Champion-Bucheit
Funeral Home in Osage and will continue one hour
before the service on Saturday at the church.
Memorials may be given to Our Savior’s Scholarship
Fund, Bridges Mentoring Program, Our Savior’s Youth
Parish Education or the charity of the donor’s choice.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel Hanson, of Osage;
three children, Carlene Hanson and son, Tyson, of
Clearfield, Utah, Kevin Hanson and his wife, Debra,
and son, Skyler, of Arlington, Texas, and Kerry Hanson
and his wife, Julie and sons, Dan and Barrett of
Mansfield, Texas; one brother, Virgil Hanson and his
wife, Garnet, of Houston, Texas; three nieces; and one
nephew.
He was preceded by his parents; and one brother,
Delmar Hanson.

CLEAR LAKE — 100-year-old Clifford N.Vestal, of
Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake, passed away Friday
(Jan. 16, 2004).
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at
the Clear Lake Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jan
Burnett of-ficiating and assisted by Clifford’s
nephew, the Rev. Duane Churchman. Interment will be at
Clear Lake Cemetery directly following the funeral
service.
Visitation will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in
Clear Lake, with a masonic service at 7 p.m.

Ventura School Foundation in memory of Clifford
Vestal.
Clifford was born July 21, 1903, the son of Woodie
Marion and Nancy (Rose) Rosetta (McFarland) Vestal in
Strahan, Mills County, Iowa. Clifford married Elva
Calkins on Aug. 14, 1929 at Clearfield, Iowa.
Clifford received his B.A. from Simpson College, M.A.
from the University of Iowa, with further education at
Morningside and Colorado Springs.
He was a school administrator, teacher and coach for
52 years in many Iowa public schools: Liberty Center,
Wales Lincoln in Montgomery County, Magnolia, Climbing
Hill, Ventura and NIACC.
He served in the US Army Air Corps during World War
II.
Clifford was a member of the following organizations:
The Clear Lake United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge,
Consistory, York Rites, Shrine, Order of Eastern Star,
Rainbow Grand Cross of Color, Lions Club, was a life
member of NEA and ISEA, was president of school ad-ministrators,
a Boy Scout leader and member of the Clear Lake
Sanitation Board.
His hobbies were reading, traveling and gardening.
Clifford is survived by his children, Leroy N. (Erla
Mae) Vestal of Kailua, Hawaii, Margaret Elva (John)
Buell, Port Orchard, Wash., and Nancy Marie (James)
Vanden-Boom Manitowoc, Wis.; 10 grandchildren; 16
great-grand-children; and a sister Dorothy Churchman
of Afton.
Clifford was preceded in death by his wife; and
parents; brothers Donald and Franklin C Vestal.

Wilma Faye Erdman, the daughter of James and Clara
(Martinson) Gambell, was born Oct. 19, 1924, at Forest
City. She attended school at Forest City.
On Oct. 4, 1941, she was married to Virgil Gordon at
Benson, Minn. They lived in the Garner area where they
raised their family and Wilma worked as a cook in
restaurants in the area.
In 1975, she was married to Harold Erdman. They made
their home in Belmond.
Wilma returned to Garner in 1981 and continued to work
as a cook at several restaurants in Garner.
She entered the Concord Care Center in August of 2001.
Wilma enjoyed visiting with people and cooking.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in
Garner and the VFW Auxiliary in Garner.
Wilma is survived by her two daughters, Twyla Erdmann
of Garner and Diane Gilbert and husband, Rick, of
Garner; three grandchildren, Angie Schilling and
husband, Jeff, and their two children, Chase and
Morgan all of Garner, Brad Erdmann of Ames and Ann
Wenthold and husband, Chuck, of Jefferson; and two
stepgrandsons, David Blanshan of Buffalo Center and
Doug Blanshan of Albert Lea, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her son,
Virgil Ron Gordon; and husbands, Virgil Gordon and
Harold Erdman.

MOLALLA, Ore. — Rhoda Ione (Bohning) Kohler, aka
Rhoda Madison, (Twin), 62, was born Aug. 24, 1941,
in Belmond, Iowa, the daughter of Paul Andrew and
Esther Pauline (Dorenkamp) Bohning, passed away,
in her sleep on Wednesday (Jan. 21, 2004) at the
Pheasant Point Assisted Living Center in Molalla,
Ore.
Funeral service will be held at noon Saturday at
the Foot Hills Community Church, 122 Grange Ave.,
Molalla, OR 97038.
She attended Alexander schools and graduated from
high school in 1959. She then married and moved to
Key West and Jacksonville Beach, Fla., for a
couple years.
She then settled in the Eugene and Portland, Ore.,
area for the rest of her life.
About 20 years ago she was declared legally blind.
She also worked for the Society for the Blind for
many years.
Those left to cherish the memory of her life
include her husband, Harry “Bud” Kohler of
Molalla, Ore.; her mother, Esther Pauline Bohning
of Belmond; her son, Michael Shane Madison and his
wife, Chelsea Madison, 226 Houser Court, Molalla,
OR 97038; her brothers, Wayne Bohning and his
wife, Val Jean, of Beach Park, Ill., Royce Bohning
(Twin) and his wife, Cherie, of Ames, Iowa, and
Norman Bohning of Hurst, Texas.; two nieces and
five nephews.
Rhoda was preceded in death by her father, Paul
Andrew Bohning, and a stillborn infant.

MAURICE E. MENTINK
MASON CITY — Maurice E. Mentink, 77, of 302 Second
St. N.E., died Wednesday (Jan. 21, 2004) at the
Good Shepherd Health Center.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at
the Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania
Ave., with the Rev. Ken Hatland officiating.
Following cremation, inurnment will take place in
Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.
Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Major
Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.,
and continues one hour before the service Saturday
at the church.

Maurice was born Dec. 14, 1926, in rural Mason
City, the son of Louis and Jenny (Meehan) Mentink.
He graduated from Mason City High School in 1946.
Maurice married Lyla K. Brunsvold on Oct. 2, 1955
in rural Kensett. Maurice worked as a clerk for
Jacob E. Decker and Sons for 38 years, retiring in
1983.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, a Boy
Scout leader, was active in Democratic politics,
Little League baseball, NIACC and Mason City High
School athletics and their booster clubs, and was
a member of the River City Softball Hall of Fame.

Shepherd Health Center for the care Maurice
received.

Mason City; son, Michael Mentink and wife, Kari,

Yorktown Pike, died Thursday (Jan. 22, 2004) at
the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason
City.

Sally J. Niedermayer was born Jan. 25, 1940, at
Mason City, a daughter of Albert and Lila “Dolly”
(Moon) Secory.
She was united in marriage to Robert G.
Niedermayer on Nov. 22, 1958, at Holy Family
Catholic Church in Mason City.
Sally grew up in Mason City and attended Mason
City schools.
She loved to play cards, collect dolls, and
entertain and cook for her friends.
Her life was centered on her family. She was a
mem-ber of Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason
City.
She is survived by one dau-ghter, Nancy Magner and
her husband, John Jr., of Mason City; four sons,
Nick Niedermayer and his wife, Lisa, of Indianola;
Bob Niedermayer, of Cedar Rapids; Mark Niedermayer,
of Sausalito, Calif.; and Jon Niedermayer and his

REV. W. GORDON SMEDSRUD
MASON CITY — The Rev. W. Gordon Smedsrud, 83, of
Mason City, died Tuesday (Jan. 20, 2004) at his
home following a brief illness.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m.
Saturday at the Center for Faith and Life at
Luther College in Decorah, with the Rev. Jim
Magelssen of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason
City, and the Rev. Mike Blair, Campus Minister,
Luther College, officiating. Interment will be at
a later date at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran
Church Cemetery in Waukon, Iowa.
A gathering of family and friends will be from
9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the service at the
Center for Faith and Life.
Gordon was born Dec. 13, 1920, in Waukon, to Carl
and Pearl (Huffman) Smedsrud. He was baptized at
Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church, and
confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church, both in
Waukon.
He graduated from Waukon Senior High School, and
obtained his undergraduate degree at Luther
College in Decorah. He then attended Luther
Northwestern Theological Seminary (now Luther
Seminary) in St. Paul, Minn., graduating with a
Master of Divinity degree in 1945.
On Aug. 9, 1945, he was united in marriage with
(Helena) Marie Prestemon at Old West Paint Creek
Lutheran Church.
Gordon was ordained as a Lutheran minister on Oct.
7, 1945, at St. John’s Lutheran Church.
He served at First Lutheran and Little Sioux
Lutheran churches in Milford, Iowa; First Lutheran
Church in Clarion, Iowa; St. Andrew’s Lutheran
Church in Ames, Iowa; and Grace Lutheran Church in
Spirit Lake, Iowa.
While in Spirit Lake, he also initiated the first
drive-in worship service at Lakeland drive-in
theatre in Okoboji, Iowa.
He served as International Luther League president
from 1955 to 1958 and as director of the ALC Youth
Office in Minneapolis, Minn., from 1959 to 1962.
He accepted the call from Luther College as campus
pastor and served at Luther from 1962 to 1983,
having been named as Dean of Campus Ministries
during his tenure.
After retiring from Luther, he served yet another
parish, Waterloo Ridge, in Dorchester, Iowa, from
1985 to 1996.
Gordon was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in
Mason City, where he enjoyed participating in
men’s Bible study.
He enjoyed golfing, trout fishing and camping. He
was also an avid reader.
He spent many happy hours at auctions and operated
The Emporium, a retail antique business in
Decorah, from 1977 to 1987.
He took great pleasure in spending time with his
loving wife of 58 years, his children,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his love
for them exceeded only by his love of and service
to his Lord.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife,
(Helena) Marie Smedsrud of Mason City; son, Rick
Smedsrud and his wife, Gini, of Mason City;
daughter, Rachel Busch and her husband, Kevin, of

BRITT — Emmanuel Peterson, 91, of Britt, passed
away Tuesday (Jan. 20, 2004) at the Hancock County
Memorial Hospital in Britt.
Funeral service for Em-manuel Peterson will be
held 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Upper Flat
Evangelical Free Church, six miles north and one
mile west of Britt, with Pastor Jason Boomgarden
officiating. Burial will take place in the
Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.
Friends may greet the family from 5 to 8 p.m.
today at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home in Britt,
and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Emmanuel Ole Peterson was born May 14, 1912, at
the family farm 6 ½ miles north of Britt. He was
the youngest of 10 children of two Danish
immigrants, Karen Marie Mathilda Olsen of
Tornemark, Sjaelland, Denmark, and Edward Michael
Peterson of Hyldtofte, Lolland, Denmark.
He was baptized at the Upper Flat Evangelical Free
Church, north of Britt, on Aug. 4, 1912.
As a young teen, he accepted Christ as his
personal savior during a week of evangelistic
meetings at the Upper Flat Church.
He was a member of the Upper Flat Evangelical Free
Church for about 75 years, and served on the
church board for over 50 years.
He attended Crystal Township No. 8 school until he
graduated from the 8th grade. In 1931, he
graduated from Britt High School where he was
active in football and the manager of the
basketball team.
He attended Britt Junior College for one year, and
then worked as a hired man for several years.
On Feb. 22, 1938, he married Hazel Ionia Boldt,
dau-ghter of Benjamin and Lydia Boldt, at her
parents’ home in Britt. Their home was blessed
with two daughters and four sons: Ruth Alice,
David Charles, Paul Alan, Neal Emmanuel, Lindy
Lou, and Hazel Ann.
Emmanuel farmed north of Britt for more than 43
years and near Forest City for about two years. He
also worked at Marting Manufacturing for 35 years
before re-tiring in 1992. He had a lifelong love
affair with horses and was always happy to be
around them and drive them.
Emmanuel was a loving husband, father, and
grandfather and known as someone who loved to
visit with people and who loved a good story. He
had a wonderful memory and loved to talk about the
history of the Upper Flat area and the church he
loved so much.
Emmanuel is survived by six children: Ruth Zill of
Kiel, Wis., David Peterson of Britt, Paul and
Marsha Peterson of Britt, Neal and Alice Peterson
of Perryton, Texas, Lindy and LaMae Peterson of
Woonsocket, S.D., and Hazel Peterson of Eagan,
Minn.; 19 grandchildren: Rebecka Thalheim
Broussard, Robert and Rich-ard Thalheim, and
Geoffrey Zill; Lisa Peterson; Angela Peterson
Ausborn, Toni Peterson Shafer, and Laurie
Peterson; John, Rachael, Michael, Thomas, Timothy,
and Belva Peterson; Jon, Benjamin, Mark and Kelly
Peterson, and Jennifer Peterson Wagner; 14
great-grandchildren, one sister-in-law, Genevieve
Peterson of Worthington, Minn., and numerous
nieces and nephews.

in 1994; one grandson, Neal Emmanuel Peterson Jr.;

ROCKWELL — Mildred L. DeRock, 87, of 204 N.
Seventh St. in Rockwell, died early Wednesday
morning (Jan. 21, 2004) at the Rockwell Community
Nursing Home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m.
Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 305 E.
Elm St., Rockwell, with the Rev. Craig E. Steimel
officiating. Interment will be at Sacred Heart
Cemetery in Rockwell.

Rockwell, a Knights of Columbus rosary will be

Mildred L. Creekmur was born to Oscar O. and Lucy
(Britt) Creekmur in Ionia on May 3, 1916.
Mildred was raised in the Ionia area and spent
most of her life in the Rockwell, Cerro Gordo
County, area.
Mildred was united in marriage to William DeRock
on June 11, 1959, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in
Mason City.
Mrs. DeRock worked many years as a bookkeeper for
Mercy Hospital in Mason City.
Mildred was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic
Church, and was active with the Sacred Heart
Guild.
Mildred was also a member of the state and
national Button Society.
Her greatest attribute was her family and greatest
joys were her grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
Mildred was an exception-al cook, she enjoyed
cooking for holiday meals and family gatherings
and was well known for baking the world’s best
turkey.
In addition to being a kind, generous and
nurturing person, Mildred’s leisure activities
included flower gardening, her favorite flowers to
tender were “sweet pea” flowers, playing cribbage
and competing in cribbage tournaments.
Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing
in Mildred’s life are her husband, William; four
children from her first marriage to Harold Hanson,
Mildred Ann Hickey of Rochester, Minn.; Marcia
Miller of Lithia, Fla.; Vince (Linda) Hanson of
Colfax, Ill., and Marie (Jerry) Toman of
Evergreen, Colo.; other survivors include five
stepdaughters, Dorothy (Henry) Cahill of
Marshalltown; Irene (Leon) Caspersen of Clear
Lake; Marilyn (Robert) Ermer and Shirley Ries,
both of Rockwell, and Dianne (Aaron) Cahalan

ALGONA — Arlene M. Hood, of Algona, died Tuesday
(Jan. 20, 2004) at the Algona Good Samaritan
Center at the age of 85. She had been a resident
there since August of 2003.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday
at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Algona, with
Father Paul Eisele officiating. Burial will be in
Calvary Cemetery, Algona.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at the

Arlene Margaret Hood was born Sept. 21, 1918, in
Wesley, daughter of Pearly and Anna (Cook) Haynes.
Arlene grew up in Wesley and graduated from Wesley
Public High School.
Arlene married William Joseph Hood on Jan. 6,
1939. They owned and operated Hood’s Grocery Store
their entire married life, where Arlene was active
in accounting and customer service.
Arlene served as an advocate for the residents of
the Algona Good Samaritan for nearly 12 years.
Arlene’s family was the most important thing in
her life. She loved spending time with her
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was an active member of St. Cecelia Catholic
Church and enjoyed volunteering her time at Good
Samaritan.
Arlene is survived by her husband, Bill Hood, of
Algona; one son, John Hood, of Algona; five
grandchildren, Cheryl Langel and her husband,
Joseph, of Lakeville, Minn., John Hood II, of
Algona, Lisette Hood, of Algona, Krista Richardson
and her husband, John, of Minneapolis, Minn., and
William Joseph “B.J.” Hood III, of Shakopee,

DARVIN ANDEREGG
CHARLES CITY — Darvin Anderegg, 80, of 902
Cedar St., Charles City, died Thursday (Jan.
22, 2004) at his home.
A funeral Mass for Darvin Anderegg will be
held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Immaculate
Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Carl
Ries celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in
Calvary Cemetery. The Charles City Ceremonial
Unit will conduct military honors.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at
the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St. in
Charles City, with a rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a
vigil scriptural wake service at 7 p.m.
Visitation will continue at the church one
hour prior to the Mass on Monday
Darvin Eugene Anderegg was born Aug. 4, 1923,
at West Bend, the son of Harold and Rosetta
(Williams) Anderegg. He graduated from West
Bend High School.
Darvin served in the U.S. Navy during World
War II, and received the Pacific Theater
Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct
Ribbon, Victory Medal, and Presidential Unit
Citation.
On Aug. 24, 1946, Darvin was united in
marriage to Virginia Rubino at Our Lady of
Perpetual Help Basilica in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Darvin farmed for 10 years, worked as an
investigator for Retail Credit Company and
provided security for the White Farm Equipment
Company.
He was a member of the Immaculate Conception
Catholic Church, American Legion, lifetime
member of the V.F.W., and served as Little
League president for sixteen years.
His favorite pastimes in-cluded baseball,
gardening, playing cards and fishing.
Family was all-important to Darvin and
spending time with them was always the focal
point of his life.
Living family members include his wife,
Virginia, of Charles City; four children,
Patricia (Tom) Nockels of Des Moines,
Charlotte (Dave) Nehls, Eugene (Keri) Anderegg,
and David (Patrese) Anderegg, all of Charles
City; 13 grandchildren; Kristin and Ehren
Nockels, Jeff and Tricia Nehls, Casey, Amy,
Joe, Tyler, Cory, Sam, Alysse, Simon and Max
Anderegg; eight great-grandchildren, Alex Jo,
Anna, Ethan, Maranda, Jordan, Hunter, Angel,
and Sydney; and three sisters, Joyce (Charles)
Marzen of Marble Rock, Phyllis Ferrier of
Clear Lake, and Mary Peter of Sheffield.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two
brothers, Russell and Raymond Ander-egg, and
two sisters, Ardys Butler, and Romona Schneck.

RANDALL D. GODDARD
ALLISON — Randall D. Goddard, 47, of Allison,
died Wednesday (Jan. 21, 2004) at Highway 3
and J Avenue from injuries suffered in a
automobile accident on Highway 3.

in Dumont, with the Rev. Terra Amundson
officiating. Inurnment will be at a later

Randall D. Goddard was born Nov. 20, 1956, in
Charles City, to Ralph and LaVonne Duckworth
Goddard. He attended school in Charles City
and graduated from high school in Waverly.
He owned and operated Countryside Welding in
Allison. After closing his shop, he was
employed by Unverferth Manufacturing in Shell
Rock.
He was affiliated with the New Hope United
Methodist Church in Dumont.
He was a past member of the Dumont Lions Club
and he belonged to the Blacksmith and Welding
Association of Iowa.
He enjoyed Renaissance activities, canoeing
and playing paint ball with his children.
Survivors include three sons, Jonathan
Goddard, of Waverly, Eric Goddard, of Allison,
and Chase Goddard, of Shell Rock; his parents,
Ralph and LaVonne Goddard, of Mosinee, Wis.
He was preceded in death by his maternal and
paternal grandparents.

AGNES M. WHITE
SHEFFIELD — Agnes M. White, 89, of
Sheffield and formerly of Milwaukee, Wis.,
died Wednesday (Jan. 21, 2004) at the
Sheffield Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m.
Monday at St. Vincent Pallotti Church,
5424 W. Bluemound Road, Milwaukee, with
the Rev. Greg Serwa, S.A.C., presiding.
Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery,
Milwaukee.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the
service at the church.
Agnes Mary White was born to John and Mary
(Tonn) Ebhert on July 1, 1914, in
Saylesville, Wis. Agnes at-tended school
in Caledonia, Wis.
She married Vincent Vernon White in June
1939 in Whitewater, Wis. Agnes and Vernon
established their home in Milwaukee within
walking distance of County Stadium,
baseball home of the Braves and later the
Brewers. Agnes remained a fan all her
life.
She and her husband started a family that
eventually grew to five girls. Vernon, or
“Whitey” as he was popularly known,
established a career as a highly regarded
Milwaukee policeman during the 1940s until
his death in a traffic accident while on
duty in 1951, leaving Agnes to raise the
five daughters by herself.
After her husband’s death, Agnes remained
a homemaker and single mother until her
daughters completed their education and
were able to be on their own. Then, she
worked in the bakery department of Sentry
Foods until Parkinson’s disease forced her
to retire.
Eventually, her declining health led Agnes
to move to the Sheffield Care Center in
Sheffield in 1994. Agnes dev-eloped many
friendships at the Care Center and
received the very best love and care from
the staff, for which her family is deeply
grateful.
Agnes is survived by five daughters,
Barbara (Dick) Heimer, Sheffield, Joan
Herden, Waukesha, Wis., Beverly (Jim)
Jones, Lake Carroll, Ill., Kathy (Jerry)
Atkinson, Urbandale, and Geralyn Pagenkopf,
Delafield, Wis.; two sisters, Marge
Jorgensen, Waukesha, Wis., and Marie Dorr,
Whitewater, Wis.; 15 grandchildren and 18
great-grandchildren.
Agnes is preceded in death by her parents;
husband; nine brothers and sisters, and
her special niece, Suzie Hiltsley.

Belmond, passed away Friday (Jan. 23,
2004) at the Belmond Medical Center.

Alberta Jean, the daughter of Claude
Harold and Clara Belle (Spurlin) Thayer,
was born Aug. 2, 1924, in Belmond. She was
baptized and confirm-ed in the United
Methodist Church in Belmond. Alberta
attended school in Belmond. During high
school, she was a cheerleader for four
years. Alberta graduated from Belmond High
School in 1942.
On March 2, 1942, she was united in
marriage to Richard Guy Middleton in
Bethany, Mo. The couple lived in Waco,
Texas, and Clarion before settling in
Belmond.
Alberta worked part-time for Drs. Bob
Misner and Les Classic at the Veterinary
Clinic and for Ris Van. She then worked
for Dr. A.M. Larson from 1961 to 1987.
Alberta loved to golf and was a member of
the Belmond Country Club. She also bowl-ed
for more than 25 years in the Belmond
Women’s Bowling League. Alberta was a
member of the United Meth-odist Church in
Belmond.
Alberta is survived by three sons, Thomas
and wife, Vicky, of Belmond, Ronald and
wife, Cheryl, of Omaha, Neb., Marc and
wife Nancy of Belmond; four grandchildren,
Vicki Wilkerson and husband, Lee, and
Richard Middleton and wife, Susan, all of
Denver, Colo., Nicole McMurray and
husband, Chris, of Meservey, and Andrea
Lee and husband, Rick, of Summerville,
S.C.; five great-grandchildren, Christian,
Addison, Daniel, Ricki and Kaytlynn; two
sisters, Irene Stoffer and husband, Ed, of
Belmond, and Genevieve Smith of Belmond;
special brother and sister-in-law, Frank
and Jane Middleton of Clarion; extended
family, Rosemary Middleton of Belmond and
extended grand-children, Matthew Owen and
his son, Seth, of Cameron, Mo., and Jacki
Stephenson and husband, Mike, of Port St.
Luce, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her parents;

VENTURA — Phil Dvorak, 42, of 4 E. Lake
St., Ventura died Saturday (Jan. 17,
2004).
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the
Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ventura with the

will be in Ventura Cemetery

Phil was born Nov. 14, 1961, in David
City, Neb., the son of Eugene L. and
Lucille (Vanous) Dvorak. He graduated from
Odebolt-Arthur High School, Odebolt, Iowa,
in 1980. He worked for 3M in Forest City
since 1981.
Phil married Cindy Meyer July 26, 1989, in
Forest City, Iowa. They lived in Crystal
Lake and then in 1993 moved to Ventura,
Iowa.
Phil was an avid fisher-man and also
enjoyed hunting, camping, canoeing,
kay-aking, biking, mushroom hunting,
radio-control airplanes, woodworking,
remodeling and especially spending time
with his family.
He had been a member of Ventura Fire
Department since 1994.
Phil will be sadly missed by his wife,
Cindy, and their two children, Laura and
Jenny, Ventura; his father Eugene, and his
wife, Pauline, Dvorak, Brainard, Neb.; his
mother, Lucille Dvorak, Vero Beach, Fla.;
his brother, Robert Dvorak, and his wife,
Veniece, Papillion, Neb.; his four
sisters, Lynn Dvorak, Vero Beach, Fla.,
Pam Hawley and her husband, Bob, Vero
Beach, Fla., Roxanne LaRussa and her
husband, Nick, McKinney, Texas, and Susie
Wilson and her husband, Mike, Marys-ville,
Kan.; his father-in-law and mother-in-law,
Alvin and Frances Meyer, Ventura; his
brothers-in-law, Jeff Meyer, Garner, and

ARMOND DOOCY
DULUTH, Minn. — Armond Anthony Doocy, 63,
of Duluth, passed away Thurs-day (Jan. 22
2004).
He was born Dec. 3, 1940, in Swea City,
Iowa, to John and Margaret Doocy. Armond
attended elementary school in Swea City
and graduated from Mason City High School.
He attended college at the University of
Maryland and the University of Minnesota,
Morris.
Armond was an Army and Navy veteran,
serving during the Vietnam War. He worked
in structural sandblasting for A.B.H.E.
and the Svoboda Sandblasting Co., Prior
Lake, Minn., before joining the Merchant
Marines. As a Merchant Marine, Armond
worked as an Able Bodied Seaman, as a
watchman and several other functions on
the boats in any water. He “did it all.”
Armond was preceded in death by his
parents; infant brother, Larry J., and
brother-in-law, Glenn Kirchner.
He is survived by a sister, Dolly Ann
Kirchner and her family, of Decorah, and a
bro-ther, Con J. Doocy of Mason City.
Committal service will be at 11 a.m.
Monday at the Oneota Cemetery Chapel.
