KENSETT - Alliedell A. Clark, 57, of Kensett, died Saturday (Jan. 3, 2004) at
the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Bethany Lutheran
Church in Kensett, with the Rev. Allan Stoa officiating. Burial will be in the
State Line Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Bayview/Freeborn Funeral
Home in Albert Lea, Minn. and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the
church.

ALGONA - Rena Delores Hanson, 85, of Algona, died Friday (Jan. 2, 2004) at
Algona Manor Care Center.

RICEVILLE - Funeral services for Elverna E. Leist will be held at 1 p.m.
Wednesday at the LeRoy Lutheran Church in LeRoy, Minn., with the Rev. Thomas
Kolden officiating. Burial will be at the Riverside Cemetery in Riceville.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the Hindt-Hutchins Funeral
Home in LeRoy, Minn. and one hour prior to services at the church.
Elverna E. Leist, 86, of Riceville and formerly of the Osage and LeRoy area,
died Sunday (Jan. 4, 2004) at the Riceville Community Rest Home in Riceville.
Elverna Elizabeth Ramsvig was born in Thor, Iowa on March 18, 1917, to Louis and
Inga (Michaelson) Ramsvig. She graduated from Thor High School.
On June 11, 1936, she was united in marriage to Joseph Earl Leist at the Little
Brown Church in Nashua and to this union four children were born, a son, Doug
and daughters, Carol Jean, Jan, and Linda. They lived in the Humboldt area and
in 1951 bought a farm in Oakdale Township, Howard County, Iowa. They lived there
until moving to Osage, Iowa in 1997.
She was a 53 year member of the LeRoy Lutheran Church, which was a very
important part of her life.
She enjoyed cooking and baking.
She is survived by one son, Doug (Jan) Leist, of Chester; three daughters, Carol
Jean (Richard) Pearce of Grinnell, Jan Leist of Tuscon, Ariz. and Linda (Robert)
Evenson, of Osage; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; several
great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Myrtle (Edward) Carlson, of Fort
Dodge.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one grandson, one
great-granddaughter, one sister, and four brothers.

MAURICE R. 'RAY' MANION
JESUP - Maurice R. "Ray" Manion, of Homestead Assisted Living in Mason City, and
formerly of Jesup, died Saturday (Jan. 3, 2004) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient
Unit in Mason City, following a lengthy illness.
He was born July 30, 1918, in Grinnell, the son of James Francis Manion and
Kathleen "Katie" (Cash) Manion.
He moved with his family to Cedar Rapids at the age of eight, graduating from
high school and attending business college there.
On Sept. 2, 1944, he was united in marriage to Eleanor Joan Schnoebelen in
Goshen, Ind. They lived in Peoria and Bloomington, Ill. while Ray worked for
Wilson Meat Packing as a sales representative.
They moved to Jesup, Iowa, in 1950 where he worked 27 years at Frost Oil
Company.
Ray also worked as a sales representative at Waterloo Motors from 1977-1987.
Eleanor preceded him in death on Nov. 25, 1988.
Mr. Manion is survived by one son, J. Craig (JoAnn) Manion of Oviedo, Fla.;
three daughters, Rae Ann (Larry) Sundt and Janine (Hugh) Strong, both of Mason
City, and Mary Kay (Brian) Parshall, of Hatfield, Pa.; also eight grandchildren;
and one sister, Mary Ellen Nolan, of Cedar Rapids.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Athanasius Catholic
Church of Jesup, with burial in the church cemetery.
Friends may call after 5 p.m. Wednesday at the White Funeral Home in Jesup,
where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil service and an 8 p.m. Knights of Columbus
rosary. The casket will be open for one hour prior to services on Thursday at
the church.

DELOS JAMES ARMSTRONG
CLEAR LAKE - DeLos James Armstrong, 93, of 901 N. 12th St., passed away Sunday
(Jan. 4, 2004) at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist
Church, 508 Second Ave. N., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jan Burnett officiating.
Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial
Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Delos James Armstrong Memorial
Fund.
DeLos was born Sept. 3, 1910, the son of Harry and Pearl (McCormick) Armstrong
in Iona, S.D. Delos moved with his folks, at an early age, to Dows, to the home
farm.
DeLos was united in marriage to Margaret Smith, March 30, 1930, and they farmed
in the Franklin County area. In 1950, they moved to the Clear Lake area and
continued to farm and later trucked, hauling livestock and grain. Margaret
passed away in August of 1965.
DeLos married Loretta Jahnke on Aug. 15, 1970. They enjoyed square dancing,
camping, and they wintered in Texas from November to April for more than 20
years.
He was a member of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church.
DeLos is survived by his wife, Loretta, of Clear Lake; three sons, James
Armstrong, of Clear Lake, Robert Armstrong and his wife, Sally, of Detroit,
Mich., and Paul Armstrong and his wife, Linda, of Des Moines; and one daughter,
Irene Alshouse and her husband, Lyle, of Dubuque; two step-children, Ronald
Jahnke and his wife, Ruth, of Cedar Rapids, and Judy Whitfield, of Mount
Pleasant, S.C.; two sisters, Alice Creighton and her husband, Rex, of Hampton,
and Ann Brinkman, of Dows; and a sister-in-law, Lois Armstrong, of Texas; nine
grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and six
step-great-grandchilren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Margaret; sister, Avis
Armstrong; and brother, Walter Armstrong.

MASON CITY - Wilma J. Clausen, 82, of 1705 S. Carolina, died Sunday (Jan. 4,
2004) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Congregational
United Church of Christ, 100 First Street N.E., with the Rev. Samuel Hamilton-Poore
officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

HARRY HENRY DIEDRICH
GRAFTON - Harry Henry Diedrich, 90, died Sunday (Jan. 4, 2004) at Mercy Medical
Center - North Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the Emmanuel
Lutheran Church in Grafton, with the Rev. Wayne Ellingson officiating. Burial
will be in the Grafton Cemetery in Grafton.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home,
207 S. School St., St. Ansgar.
Harry Henry Diedrich was born Feb. 8, 1913, in Mitchell County, the son of
William F. and Freeda (Dutte) Diedrich. He was baptized at his parents' home and
confirmed in 1929 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton, where he was a
member his entire life. He received his education in the Newburg District School
in Mitchell county.
On Feb. 6, 1938, he was united in marriage to Velma Seeger at the Bethlehem
Lutheran Church near Myrtle, Minn. The couple farmed in the Grafton and
Carpenter areas, with Harry having a threshing route in his early farming years.
He also drove a school bus for St. Ansgar Community Schools for 18 years.
Following their retirement, the couple moved to their present home in Grafton in
1975.
Harry served as president of the Newburg No. 5 Township School, secretary of the
Grafton Telephone Co., served on the Grafton Manor, cemetery and church boards
and was active in Senior Citizens.
Harry enjoyed gatherings with family and friends, especially the yearly Diedrich
reunion, sightseeing trips to western states, and fishing trips to Northern
Minnesota.
As a young man he enjoyed playing the violin and oboe in the church orchestra
and band. His hobbies included restoring antique furniture and woodworking.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother; a brother-in-law,
Herbert Seeger, of Albert Lea; a sister-in-law, Lillian and husband, Eric
Buntrock, of Minneapolis.
Harry is survived by his wife, Velma, of 65 years; son, David Diedrich and wife,
Darlene, of Grafton; daughter, Janice Morrison, of Albert Lea, Minn., daughter,
Julie Braun and special friend, David Ward, of Mason City; one brother, John
Diedrich, of St. Ansgar; and some special cousins and friends.

WILDA CLARA (HENDRICKS) PHILLIPS
FOREST CITY - Wilda Clara (Hendricks) Phillips of the Good Samaritan Center in
Forest City, passed away Saturday (Jan. 3, 2004) surrounded by her family.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the North McDonald
family cemetery near Winterset.
Wilda Clara Hendricks was born Sept. 27, 1926, in Winterset, to Blanche (Myers)
and Oliver Hendricks. Wilda graduated from Winterset High School in 1944. Upon
graduation, Wilda worked in Des Moines for a bank and later in sales.
In 1952, she married James W. Stepp of Des Moines. Three children were born to
that union, Cynthia, Jamie and Steven Stepp.
In 1968, Wilda married Orville Glen Phillips of Eagle Grove, where she devoted
her life to family and church.
Wilda could often be found teaching adult and teen Sunday School at Mount
Calvary Lutheran Church and was an active member of her congregation. She
volunteered her service as chairperson for Meals on Wheels as well as for other
community service organizations.
Wilda enjoyed cooking and antiquing, but most of all her family.
She later moved to Forest City, to be near her grandchildren. Wilda was a
wonderful mother and grandmother and was a "second mom" to countless others, and
always lived her life with quiet humility and integrity toward others. She will
be dearly missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by two sisters, Laona (Hendricks) Goater, and Margaret
(Hendricks) Jones, both of Winterset; daughter, Cynthia (Stepp) Peters and her
husband, Kim, of Fertile; her sons, Jamie and his wife, Dawn Stepp, of Leland,
and Steve Stepp of Des Moines; five grandchildren, Anne Peters, Jamie,
Mackenzie, Doug and Noah Stepp.
Preceding Wilda in death were her husbands, James Stepp and Glen Phillips; her
parents, Blanche and Oliver; three brothers, William, Walter, and Ralph
Hendricks; and one sister, Ethel (Hendricks) Haines.

PARKERSBURG - Bena Walters, 93, of Parkersburg, died Sunday (Jan. 4, 2004) at
the Allison Care Center in Allison.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m Wednesday at the Hitesville Gospel
Hall in rural Aplington, with the Rev. Robert Orr officiating. Burial will be in
the Hitesville Cemetery in rural Aplington.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in
Allison.
Bena was born on July 19, 1910, in Emdem,Germany, the daughter of Jacob Sluiter
and Anna Garrels. She attended country school near Allison.
On April 30, 1935, Bena Sluiter was united in marriage to William (Bill)
Walters. Bena was a homemaker, and they farmed near Parkersburg and did custom
work.
She was a member of the Hitesville Gospel Hall.
Bena enjoyed being in fellowship with the Christians at the Hitesville Gospel
Hall, where she enjoyed serving the Lord.
Bena enjoyed embroidering, gardening, flowers, cooking and baking.
Survivors include her sons, Jackie and wife, Lillian Walters, of Cedar Falls,
and Lee and wife, Bonnie Walters, of Parkersburg; daughter, Betty and husband,
Mike Smith, of Clear Lake; brother, Warner and wife, Elizabeth Sluiter, of
Parkersburg; sister, Fannie Leerhoff, of Parkersburg; 10 grandchildren; 33
great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William (Bill) Walters; her parents;
two sisters, Anna Speiker, and Margaret Tack; three brothers, Adolph, Henry, and

BELMOND - Ethel Young, 89, of Belmond, died Saturday (Jan. 3, 2004) at the
Belmond Medical Center in Belmond.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at the Belmond United Methodist
Church, with the Rev. Paddy Druhl officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond
Cemetery.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Ethel Bier, one of nine children, was born Aug. 19, 1914, at Meservey, the
daughter of Henry G. and Priscilla (Pals) Bier. She attended Meservey Schools.
Ethel began working in the early years of her life as a waitress in an area cafe
where she met her husband Urie T. (Thomas) Young. The two were united in
marriage on Jan. 10, 1934. Ethel then joined her husband in his travels as a
salesman selling cookware throughout the country.
The couple was blessed with a daughter, Mary Jane. They had lived in various
places thoughout the years. In addition to helping her husband in his sales
career, she had been employed for many years at Woolworth's and for a time at
The Plaza in Kansas City, Mo.
Ethel later returned to her Iowa roots from Missouri moving back to Belmond in
the 1970s and had lived at the Leinbach Center Retirement Community since
November 1980.
Ethel enjoyed the simple things of life and believed in smelling the roses along
the way. She lived a life of strong convictions filled with grace and concern
for humanity.
Though at times her life may have been filled with challenges, she always saw
the best in everything.
She was a devoted mother, wife, grandma, and caregiver.
For many years her love and affection was shown in the care that she provided
for area residents.
She loved her daughter's family very much and cherished the wonderful bond with
her son-in-law, Rusty Rusnak, who enjoyed treating her with respect and dignity
and treating her to special occasions.
She was a pioneer of sorts in the fact that she had never driven an automobile
in her 89 years of life. She was a wonderful cook.
Ethel had been an active member of the United Methodist Church participating in
various activities, the UMCW, and the Senior Citizens. She had also assisted
with the Belmond Care Care program.
Those left to cherish the memory of her life include her daughter, Mary Jane
Rusnak, of Olathe, Kan.; her brother, Paul Bier, of Belmond; her granddaughter,
Karla Ann and husband, Jay K. Johnson, of Overland Park, Kan.; and their
children Lindsay and Michael, both at home with their parents, her grandson, Dr.
Robert (Bob) Rusnak and wife, Barbara, of Topeka, Kan., and their children
Stephanie and Rachel, both at home with their parents; and many nieces and
nephews.
Those preceding her in death include her parents, husband, Urie T. (Thomas)
Young; son-in-law, Rusty Rusnak; sisters, Laura Haupt, Iva Beek, and Wanda Bier;
brothers, Warren, Glenn, Lloyd Bier; and an infant brother, Lester Bier.

DOROTHY J. LINDQUIST
STEWARTVILLE, Minn. - Dorothy J. Lindquist, 84, of Stewartville, Minn., formerly
of Mason City, Iowa, died Friday (Jan. 2, 2004) at the Stewartville Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral
Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Chris Brekke, Good Shepherd
Lutheran Church, Rochester, Minn., officiating. Interment will be in Memorial
Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Wednesday until the time of service at the
funeral home.
Memorials may be given to the Dorothy J. Lindquist Memorial Fund.
Dorothy was born Nov. 16, 1919, in Mason City, the daughter of Edward F. and
Martha M. (Haase) Gorman. She graduated from Mason City High School, moved to
Algona for six years then returned to Mason City in 1936.
Dorothy married Donald R. Lindquist Jan. 29, 1940, in Mason City. She worked at
the Cerro Gordo Hotel for three years, then as the deputy auditor for Cerro
Gordo County for 27 years, retiring in 1980.
Dorothy was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Rochester, Minn., ONO
Club, volunteered for Hospice of North Iowa, KCMR Radio, literacy program and
enjoyed quilting.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Vivienne Braun and husband, Ronald, of
Brodhead, Wis.; son, Marshall E. "Mike" Lindquist and wife, Mary Alice, of
Rochester, Minn.; grandchildren, Matt Braun of the United Arab Emirates, Amanda
Braun of Green Bay, Wis., Jeff Sawyer of Rochester, Minn., Steve Sawyer and
wife, Tricia, of Cedar Rapids, and Marsha Lindquist of Rochester, Minn.; three
great-grandchildren, Graham and Collin Sawyer, Sydnee Lindquist; sister, Vivian
Bennett and husband, Robert, of Mason City; brother, Howard Gorman and wife,
Haroldean, of Story City; sister, Mileen Sinclair of Carrollton, Texas; sister,
Janice Burgess and husband, Harold, of Cedar Rapids; sister-in-law, Lucille

ROBERT J. ‘BOB’ WALKER SR.
IOWA CITY — Robert J. “Bob” Walker Sr., 77, of rural Iowa City, died Sunday
(Jan. 4, 2004) at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Iowa City, following a
short illness.
Funeral service for Robert will be held at 6 p.m. today at Gay & Ciha Funeral
and Cremation Service, 2720 Muscatine Ave. in Iowa City. Burial will be at a
later date.
Visitation will be 1 to 3 p.m. today at the funeral home.
He was born on Sept. 30, 1926, in Johnson County, the son of Scott and Columbia
Powelson Walker. Robert graduated from Lone Tree High School then joined the
U.S. Air Force.
On Feb. 16, 1949, Robert married Ida Belle Hollingshead in Enid, Okla.
After the Air Force, he graduated from an engineering school in Milwaukee, Wis.
Most of his life was lived on the family farm south of Iowa City.
Through the years he had worked for Allen Bradley in Milwaukee, General Foods,
City Cab, city sewer department and Sheller Globe in Iowa City. He retired from
Sheller Globe in 1988, where he worked as an electrician.
Robert was a member of the Free Medical Board and the HACAP Board in Iowa City.
Robert is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ida; his sister, Cara Brehm, of
Tacoma, Wash.; and 14 children, Lindy Lou Snyder of Fort Worth, Texas; Robert
Joseph (Connie) Walker Jr., of Mason City, C. Henry (Lee) Walker, of Salina,
Kan., Miron Jay (Elaine) Walker, of Oelwein, Charles Francis (Jackie) Walker, of
Lake Dallas, Texas, Terry Mark (Lenora) Walker, of Orem, Utah, James Timothy
Walker, of Iowa City, Michael Raymond (Susan) Walker, of Kalona, John Barry
Walker, of Cedar Rapids, Benjamin Lee (Shari) Walker, of Cedar Rapids, Clinton
Wilber Walker, of Iowa City, Sarah Walker, of Hesston, Kan., Carol Walker of
West Liberty, and Judy Lynn (James) Ridg-way, of Cedar Rapids. He was also the
proud grandparent of 40 grandchildren; and five great-granddaughters.

6, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Mildred Irene Overbeck was born March 19, 1927, the daughter of Oscar O. and
Karen “Marie” (Melcher) Overbeck in Mason City. She attended schools in the
Mason City public school system.
Mildred was united in marriage to Robert H. Thorpe on May 17, 1946, in Mason
City.
Mildred was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary and the Eagles Fraternal Order No.
3416.
She spent many hours working and playing bingo. Mildred also enjoyed crocheting
and bowling. Mildred worked for Armour’s for 32 years.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Robert Thorpe of Mason
City; daughter, Terrie Lea Weiland and husband, Larry, of Man-kato, Minn.;
daughter, Jeri Lyn Thorpe and partner, Julie Cain, of Fayetteville, Ark.;

her home in Nora Springs.

Ruth L. Gast was born on Sept. 3, 1924, in Waterloo, the daughter of Glen W. and
Alleen V. (Hamilton) Martin. She attended and received her education at Lincoln
School in Mason City.
She was united in marriage to Truman H. Gast on June 17, 1941, in Mason City.
Ruth worked as a med aide at the Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City and for
the Nora Springs Care Center.
She and her husband Truman had resided in Nora Springs for past 54 years.
She enjoyed collecting dolls, flowers, going to horse shows and visiting with
family and friends, but her great love and enjoyment was her family and friends.
Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Truman Gast of Nora Springs; her son,
Howard Gast, of Nora Springs; grandchildren, Kevin Gast and his wife, Brenda, of
Sheffield, and James Gast, of Nora Springs; great-grandchildren, Chelsea and

Wilma was born Feb. 18, 1921, in rural Charles City, the daughter of Bernice and
Dorothy (Wood) Lambert. She graduated from Charles City High School in 1937,
moved to Mason City in 1938, then attended Hamilton Business College for one
year.
Wilma married Paul J. Clausen on Oct. 18, 1941, at the Little Brown Church in
Nashua. She was the bookkeeper for Clausen Plumbing and Heating for 25 years,
re-tiring in 1983.
Wilma was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, active
in various church groups, a life member of the VFW, volunteered at Community
Kitchen as well as other organizations, enjoyed ceramics, breakfast with her
friends and spending time with her family.
Wilma is survived by a daughter, Karen Hackman and husband, Robert, of Mason
City; a son, Steve Clausen and wife. Ann, of Mason City; daughter, Shelley
Wallace and husband, Greg, of Troy, Ill.; brother, James Lambert and wife,
Imogene, of Arlington, Texas; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

DONNA MAE KAHLSTORF
BRADENTON, Fla. — Donna Mae Kahlstorf, 75, of Bradenton, Fla., died Sunday (Jan.
4, 2004) at Blake Medical Center.
She was born Jan. 30, 1928, near Garner. Just after graduation from Britt High
School, she accepted the Lord as her Savior at a youth con-vention. This
decision changed her life and focus.
She graduated from Northwestern Bible School in Minneapolis and earned a B.A. in
education from the University of Northern Iowa in preparation to serve the Lord.
She taught fourth and fifth grades for two years before she left for Zimbabwe in
1955 as a missionary under The Evangelical Alliance Mission.
She taught in the Chironga Teachers’ Training Institute for several years,
training young Africans to teach kin-dergarten and elementary grades. Later, she
became an instructor in the Evangelical Bible College, mainly in the Christian
education department. She, together with Bible College students, reach-ed out to
start African churches. Her last two terms in Zimbabwe were spent managing the
Word of Life Book Store in Harare, the capital city.
Donna left Zimbabwe in April of 1995 to retire. Since then she had made her home
at Bradenton Missionary Village in Bradenton, Fla. At the village she had been
involved in various types of volunteer work.
She is survived by three sisters, Edna Fisher of Phoenix, Ariz., Laura Baade of
Britt and Mildred Sonerholm of Klamath Falls, Ore.; two brothers, Harold
Kahlstorf of Britt and Donald Kahlstorf, of Phoenix, Ariz.; and many nephews and
nieces.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Gertrude Mortenson, of Naples, Fla.
Graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Skyway Memorial Gardens,
5200 U.S. Highway 19 N. Palmetto, FL 34221.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Bradenton Missionary Village
at the Rossi Center in Brad-enton, Fla.

Nickola Joseph Kavaya was born Dec. 19, 1929, in Mason City, the youngest
child to Viola (Kruskich) and Joseph Kavaya. “Nicholas,” as he was fondly
known by his family and friends, was baptized at the Holy Transfiguration
Greek Orthodox Church in Mason City.
He attended Mason City schools and graduated in the class of 1949. During
his high school years, Nicholas was active in athletics and was a co-captain
of the football team.
Nicholas was inducted into the U.S. Air Force and served his country for
five years. He had achieved the rank of airman third class. After honorably
and faithfully serving in the military, Nicholas was formally discharged
from his duties on Sept. 17, 1954.
Nicholas was the proud owner and operator of Serb-perb Construction. He was
well known for his carpentry craftsmanship of many re-modeling projects and
the construction of many homes and businesses in the area.
Some of Nicholas’ favorite leisure activities and interests throughout his
life included dancing at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, fishing, having
coffee and conversations with his friends and cheering for the Los Angeles
Dodgers and the California (Anaheim) Angels baseball teams. He treasured
spend-ing time outdoors, enjoying nature and all types of wild-life.
Those who best knew Nicholas claim that he was an easygoing man who loved
tending to his grapevines and vegetable and flower gardens.
Spending time with his family and friends was precious to Nicholas. He will
be dearly missed by all who have shared in his life.
Nicholas is survived by his son, Mark Kavaya and his wife, Lori, of
Urbandale; his sister, Goldie Kavaya and brother, Reesta Kavaya, both of
Whittier, Calif. He will also be sadly missed by his three granddaughters,
Michelle, Michaela and Taylor; his great-grandson, C.J. and many other
relatives and friends.
Preceding Nicholas in death are a son, Michael Kavaya; his parents, Joseph
and Viola Kavaya; his sisters, Jenny Scherbert and Dorothy Samardzich; and
his three brothers, George, Dan and Robert Kavaya.

ROBERT M. CARROLL
FAIRFAX, VA. — Robert M. Carroll, colonel, U.S. Army (retired) passed away
in his sleep at 7:25 a.m. Thursday (Jan. 1, 2004) at his home, The
Virginian, in Fairfax, Va. He was 79.
He was born Nov. 1, 1924, and raised in Mason City, the son of Matthew M.
Carroll and Mary O’Neil; brother of Martin “Patrick” Carroll; Staff Sgt.
John W. Carroll, killed in action on Bougain-ville, March 1944; and Helen
Campbell. Survived by a sister, Margaret Nolterieke (96), of Laguna Woods,
Calif.
He graduated from Holy Family High School in 1942. He was inducted into the
Army in April 1943 and commissioned in the cavalry on Aug. 2, 1945. He
separated from the U.S. Army on July 6, 1946.
He graduated Mason City Junior College in 1948.
He served in “H” Company, 133rd Infantry Regiment, Iowa National Guard,
until September 1948, when recalled to active duty in the U.S. Army. He was
commissioned in the regular army in 1951; served with the 1st Cavalry
Division in Japan and Korea; with 3rd Cavalry Regiment in Germany; twice as
an advisor in Vietnam; and with NATO in Izmir, Turkey.
He was a graduate of the University of Maryland, the University of
California and the U.S. Army War College.
Col. Carroll was married to Mahala Ann Meade, also of Mason City, in
Washington, D.C., on Aug. 6, 1945. Mrs. Carroll passed away on July 8, 2001.
He is survived by six children: Matthew R. Carroll (Ph.D.), Bryan, Texas;
Mahala A. Morefield, Buford, Ga.; Kevin F. Carroll, Summerville, S.C.; John
P. Carroll, colonel, U.S. Army, Fort Hamilton, N.Y.; Camilla M. Hersh, M.D.,
Mclean, Va.; and Rita K. Joseph, Mclean Va.; and 15 grandchildren. A son,
Timothy, died as an infant in 1957.
Col. Carroll received 18 awards and decorations in-cluding a Silver Star,
two Legions of Merit, two Bronze Stars, two Purple Hearts, an Air Medal and
an Army Commendation Medal. He won the Silver Star and two Purple Hearts for
gallantry in action during the defense of the Naktong River (Pusan
Perimeter) in August 1950, while serving in Company H, 7th Cavalry Regiment,
1st Cavalry Division.
Funeral will be held at 8:45 a.m., Feb. 9, 2004, at Old Post Chapel, Fort
Meyer, Va. A military interment ceremony will follow at the Columbarium at
Arlington National Cemetery.

54 years and was a member of the Esther Circle.
Lillian was also a member of Eastern Star, White Shrine and enjoyed playing
bridge and dancing.

Athens, Greece, and the Rev. Marlin E. Snyder and wife, Gretchen, of St.

BRITT — Carl Marker, 89, of Britt, passed away Wednesday (Jan. 7, 2004)
at the Westview Care Center in Britt.
Funeral service will be held Saturday (Jan. 10, 2004) at 1:30 p.m. at
the First Lutheran Church in Britt, with the Rev. Dr. John Meyer
officiating. Burial will take place in the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

Carl Marker was born on May 8, 1914, at Tintah, Minn., the son of Tom
and Ella (Hanson) Marker. He attended school in Galt.
Carl was united in marriage to Gladys Draves on Feb. 19, 1939, in
Hampton, the start of a union of 64 years.
They farmed in the Dows-Galt area until moving to a farm north of Britt
in 1948, which he farmed until retirement in 1978.
Carl was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Woden, and First
Lutheran Church of Britt upon retirement.
He was an active member of the Men’s Brotherhood, serving as an officer
and on various committees. He was also a member of Silver Stars seniors
group.
Carl assisted in the establishment of the rural phone service in the
Woden area. He took a great pride in Iowa farmland and served as Hancock
County Soil Conservation Commissioner for a full term.
He enjoyed youth activities, fishing, camping, especially the State
Fair, and spur of the moment car rides, just to see the country.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents; son, Arnold; grandsons, Aaron
and Eric Kipp; brothers, Elmer and George, who died in infancy;
brothers, John and Hans; and sister, Carrie.
Carl is survived by his wife, Gladys; daughter, Janet (Greg) Kipp, of
New Richmond, Wis.; son, Douglas, of Roch-ester, Minn.; daughter-in-law,
Dorothy Marker, of Sauk Centre, Minn.; grandchildren, Timothy (Laura)

THORNTON — Hazel Marie Wonsmos, 88, of Thornton, died Wednesday (Jan. 7,
2004) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
According to her wishes, she is being cremated. She will have a private
inurn-ment at the Richland Lutheran Cemetery in Thornton.

North Iowa.
Hazel was born Feb. 2, 1915, in Jackson, Minn., the daughter of Marius
and Ida (Rosedahl) Oredsen. She graduated from Fertile High School.
Hazel married Chris Wonsmos on Nov. 15, 1948, in Hampton. They lived in
Thornton.
Hazel cleaned homes in Thornton and cleaned for several businesses. She
also worked at the Clear Lake Bakery.
Hazel was a member of the Richland Lutheran Church in Thornton.
Hazel is survived by two sisters, Dorothea Hansen, of Los Angeles,
Calif., and Edna Mae Seager, of Sacramento, Calif.; a stepdaughter,
Dorothy A. Wonsmos, of Albuquerque, N.M.; several nieces and ne- phews
and numerous friends.
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, in 1961; four
brothers, Melvin, Stan, Don, and Pete Oredsen; and two sisters, Fern and
Frances.

2004) at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Laura Elsie Land was born on April 26, 1909, in Seneca, S.D., the
daughter of Helmer and Maria (Olson) Myli. She was baptized and
confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She attended and received her education
in the rural Chickasaw County and Hanlontown schools.
She was united in marriage to Clayton Land on July 23, 1927, in New
Hampton. After their marriage, Laura and Clayton farmed for many years
in the Glenville, Minn., and Hartland Township area. They moved to
Northwood in 1975, and to this union seven children were born.
Laura was an avid gardener and she loved her flowers, and was very
enthusiastic over her ribbons she won at the Worth County fair. She also
made quilts all her life and was the only lady that patched a patchwork
quilt.
Laura loved her family, their lives were most important to her.
She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Northwood.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Lila Funk, of Charles City,
Lily Anderson and her husband, John, of Albert Lea, Minn., Luan Sallee,
of Albert Lea, Andrew Land, of Dent, Minn., Harry Land and his wife,
Mary, of Swisher, Carolyn Kalvig and her husband, Carl, of Northwood,
and Frances Christian-sen and her husband, Roger, of Lake Mills. Laura
also raised two grandchildren, Russell Sanden, of Gordons-ville, Minn.,
and Loretta Starkey of Jacksonville, Fla. Also left to cherish her
mem-ory are 24 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and eight
great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Anna Sanden, of Albert Lea,
Minn.; as well as several nieces and nephews, and other relatives and
friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clayton; a
granddaughter, Cathy Funk; a great-granddaughter, Sherry Starkey; a
daughter-in-law, Joanne Land; three brothers, Phillip, Maurice, and
Robert Myli; and four sons-in-law, Donald Sallee, Fred Funk, Milford
Leidal, Gilman Sanden.

CLEAR LAKE — Donald E. Hoversten, 72, of 604 S. Third St. in Clear Lake,
died suddenly of a heart attack, Wednesday (Jan. 7, 2004) at Mercy
Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Church, 112 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake. Inurnment will be in the
Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Don was born July 28, 1931, the son of Elmer Truman and Bessie Ilo
(Weaver) Hoversten, in Hamilton County, Williams, Iowa. Don graduated
from Alden High School in 1949, and entered the U.S. Air Force, Dec. 29,
1949, in Des Moines.
He was an airman first class serving during the Korean War and was
discharged July 16, 1952.
Don married Jacqueline H. Hall, Aug. 2, 1952, at the Little Brown Church
in Nashua. They lived most of their married life in Clear Lake, where
Don worked at the Clear Lake Bakery for seven years on the loading dock,
before joining the staff of the Clear Lake Sanitary District in 1973,
where he was employed until retiring in 1993.
Don was a collector of wooden trains, and enjoyed gardening, watching
“The Price Is Right,” “Wheel of Fortune,” and football, especially the
Vikings and Hawkeyes; and going to the casino and playing games of
chance. Don liked to dine out with his family at many local restaurants
and enjoyed spending time with his grandkids.
He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, American Legion, and
Thrivent.
Don is survived by his wife, Jackie Hoversten, of Clear Lake; three
children, Susan Swartwood and her husband, Steve, of Mason City, William
Hoversten, of Clear Lake, and Kathy Verhalen and her husband, Eric, of
Clear Lake; five brothers, Wally, Merle, Dave, Butch and Ron Hoversten;
five sisters, Evelyn Kinstle, Verna Scott, Betty Richts-meier, Fran
Rout, and Delia Rockow; five grandchildren, Joshua Heginger, of Mason
City, and Justin, Nathan, Nicholas and Jami Verhalen, all of Clear Lake;
and one great-granddaughter, Kourtney Verhalen-Hare, of Mason City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Richard, Robert,
Harold and Gene; and two infant sons, Todd and James.

Marian Darlene Baum was born to Elmer and Alberta (Peters) Anderson
in Forest City on April 17, 1924. She grew up and attended school in
Forest City.
On Oct. 2, 1949, Darlene was united in marriage to William Lester
Baum in Albert Lea, Minn.
Darlene and William lived in Mason City for 45 years.
Darlene had been a homemaker, but was most passionate about her
devotion to her faith with the Salvation Army Church in Mason City,
active as a Sunday school teacher and assisting as the Home League
Secretary.
Her greatest attribute was her family and greatest joys were her 11
grandchildren.
Her strength and courage were undying and admirable, which made her
an altogether remarkable lady.
Darlene loved her plants and while she could kept the home place
beautiful with the flowers she planted. Darlene was also an avid
bird watcher.
Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in her life are her
husband of 55 years, William; and four children, Nancy (Wayne) Scott
of Mason City, Rita Ekborg of Mason City, Bill (Pam) Baum of
Marseilles, Ill. and Su (Bob) Mandile of Mason City; one brother,
Lyle Anderson of Mason City; 11 grandchildren and 10
great-grandchildren; and her son-in-law, Art Wahl of Mason City.

SKY VALLEY, Ga. — Harold Omar Varvel, 69, formerly of Norfolk, Va.,
passed away Jan. 1, 2004, at his Sky Valley, Ga., home after a
lengthy illness.
He retired after 42 years with Norshipco Shipbuilding and Drydock
Corp. He was a shipbuilding superintendent.
Born in Mason City, Iowa, he attended schools there.
He served aboard the U.S.S. Iowa in the Navy.
He belonged to the Grand Lodge of Virginia, Chesapeake, Va., Shrine
Club and was a 32-degree Mason. He volunteered in the Chesapeake
Police Department for 23 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and brothers.
Surviving are his son, Timothy Harold Varvel, of Virginia Beach,
Va.; and a grandson, Joseph Timothy Varvel, of Canandaigua, N.Y.
Other survivors include his fiancee, Nancy West, of Sky Valley, Ga.;
uncle Mike and Betty Djuren, of Mason City; and aunts, Mae Mitcham
and Esther Hougham, of Des Moines.

Marilyn Joyce Arhart was born on Sept. 8, 1935, in Washington, Iowa,

the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He preceded her in death on July
28, 1991.
After their marriage they moved to Nora Springs and then to Mason
City before moving to Northwood in 1975.
After moving to Northwood, Marilyn and Don owned and operated the
Midway Café. Marilyn also worked for the Corner Post Restaurant in
Northwood.
She enjoyed cooking, baking, was especially known for her pies,
cinnamon rolls and sewing; but her great love and enjoyment was her
family and the customers she served at the café.
She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly, was a
Sunday school teacher at the church for 30 years, and was also very
active in other civic and church activities in Northwood and Manly.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Larry Ar-hart and his
wife, Sandra, of Mason City, Stella Marie Odom and her husband,
Mike, of Manly, Dale Arhart and his wife, Karen, of Northwood, and

Lilah was born March 27, 1912, at Bristow, the daughter of Alva and
Dorothea (Elkema) Mathews. Lilah graduated from Bristow High School

Lilah married Mitchell Trowbridge June 23, 1932, in Galt, Iowa.
Lilah and her husband farmed for over 43 years in Wright, Mitchell
and Howard counties, retiring to Clear Lake in 1974.
Lilah was a member of Clear Lake United Methodist church.
She was also a 50-year member of Queen Rebekah Lodge.
She was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening, canning and trying new
recipes. She crocheted many afghans for her family, grandchildren
and great-grandchildren in her later years.
She enjoyed traveling very much and had visited every state in the
U.S., plus Europe, England, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.
She wrote many stories of her travels and enjoyed talking about it.
She enjoyed her many visits and spending time with all her family
and friends.
She took great pride in living in her own home and taking care of
herself up until Thanksgiving, when she fell and had to be
hospitalized and was transferred to the Sheffield Care Center, where
she passed away after a brief illness on Jan. 9, 2004.
Survivors include two sons, Jon and Maryln Trowbridge of Akron, and
George and Jan Trowbridge of Largo, Fla.; five daughters, Doris and
Charles Greibel of New Ulm, Minn., Dorothea and Gary Borchardt of
Sheffield, Doreen Machin of Lakeville, Minn., Leann and Calvin
Rasmusson of Mason City, and Linda and Duane Roda-maker of
Clarksville. Lilah leaves 19 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren
and two great-great-grandchildren.

Trowbridge on Dec. 10, 1981; two brothers, Lloyd and Laverne

worked as a typist.

Goldie enjoyed listening to her favorite gospel music and tending to

Yasuko married Ronald Amundson on July 24, 1956, in Tokyo, Japan.
During his 22 years of service in the U.S. Navy, they liv-ed in
Spain, Taiwan, Philippines and Italy.
After his retirement in 1970, they returned to Clear Lake.
Yasuko was an excellent cook and was a very generous caring person
and very devoted to her family.
Yasuko is survived by her son, Rick Amundson, of Clear Lake;

8, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

MARBLE ROCK — A funeral Mass for Agatha A. Krambeer, 94, of 640 E.
Bradford St., will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church
in Roseville, rural Marble Rock, with Monsignor Walter Brunkan
officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Reid’s Funeral Chapel in
Greene, with a scriptural wake service at 6 p.m. followed by a
rosary conducted by the Roseville Rosary Society. Visitation will
continue one hour prior to the service Monday at the parish hall.
Agatha Anne Merfeld was born Feb. 5, 1909, in rural Union Township,
Floyd County, a daughter of John Joseph and Kathryn (Kramer) Merfeld,
and died Thursday (Jan. 8, 2004) at the Liebe Care Center in Greene.
She received her education at St. Mary’s School in Rose-ville and
graduated from the Marble Rock Public School in 1926.
She was employed at Moore’s General Store in Marble Rock as a clerk
until becoming assistant Postmaster in January 1935.
On Oct. 7, 1939, she was united in marriage to Donald Ellis Krambeer
at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Roseville. They made their home in
Marble Rock where they were both active in the community.
She retired from the post office in March 1973. Don preceded her in
death on January 27, 1988.
Agie was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in
Roseville, member of the Rosary Society, Marble Rock Historical
Society, National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the
Heritage Club. She was an avid New York Mets and Iowa Hawkeyes fan.
Living family members include two sisters-in-law, Gila Merfeld of
Greene and Audrey Merfeld of Marble Rock; and many nieces and
nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, four sisters,
Marcellina, Barbara, Ann, and Christine; and six brothers, Tony,
Merrick, Leander, Bernard, and Ed-ward Merfeld and a brother in
infancy.

Friday (Jan. 9, 2004) at her home.

Paulette Kay (Hall) Elliott was born on July 25, 1943, to Eliot and
Irene (Roth) Hall in Ironwood, Mich.
She received her education from Mason City High School. After she
graduated she worked in the kitchen at the Mercy Hospital.
She was united in marriage to Bill Elliott on Sept. 19, 1965, at the
First Baptist Church in Mason City.
She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church.
She enjoyed going on walks and meeting her friends for coffee.
Her greatest love was her family. She was very devoted to her
children and grandchildren.
Paulette is survived by her husband, Bill Elliott, of Mason City;
two children, Sara (Mark) Romanik of Olympia, Wash., and Steve
Elliott and his special friend, Jan McDonald, of Iowa City; four
grandchildren, Lucy, Tom, Luke, and Sam Romanik of Olympia, Wash.;
sister, Gwen (Bill) Gasperi of Mason City; three brothers, Willis
Nasheim of Charles City, Gordon Hall of Sussex, Wis., and Keith
(Kathy) Hall of Mason City; along with many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; and brother Herbie Nasheim.

HARRY JAMES BOVAIRD
FOREST LAKE, Minn. — Harry James Bovaird, 87, of Forest Lake, Minn.,
died Thursday morning (Jan. 8, 2004) at Birchwood Health Care Center
in Forest Lake.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Jan. 31, 2004, at
Faith Lutheran Church, 886 N. Shore Drive in Forest Lake, with
Pastor Phil Peterson officiating. Interment will be at Forest Lawn
Cemetery in St. Paul, Minn.
Harry Bovaird was born June 2, 1916, in St. Paul, to James and Ragna
Bovaird. In 1933, he graduated from Mason City High School.
Harry married Helen Hinich in 1938 and they had two children, James
Michael and Cynthia Jean.
During World War II, Harry was an aerial gunner in the U.S. Army Air
Corps. He received his honorable discharge on Dec. 1, 1945. During
his service duty he and Helen divorced.
On Jan. 9, 1948, Harry married Jacqueline (Jackie) Mary Smith in
Albert Lea, Minn. In the early 1950s they moved to St. Paul, where
Harry worked for Vogel Manufacturing.
From the early 1960s un- til he retired in 1981, Harry worked for
the Minnesota Highway Department of Transportation.
Harry’s beloved wife Jackie died on Aug. 9, 1999.
Harry was a member of Forest Lake’s Faith Lutheran Church, the
Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion.
Harry had a wonderful sense of humor, was an avid golfer, and
treasured time spent with his friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hospice of the Twin
Cities or Faith Lutheran Church.
