JERRY FRED ACKERMAN

NORTHWOOD — Jerry Fred Ackerman, 46, of Northwood, died Monday (Dec. 29, 2003) at his home in Northwood.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. S., Northwood, with the Rev. Allan Stoa officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Visitation will be one hour prior to service time at the chapel on Saturday.

Jerry Fred Ackerman was born on Oct. 22, 1957, in Mason City, the son of Joe and Mabel (Magee) Ackerman.

He attended and received his education in the Mason City public schools. Jerry moved to Northwood in 1972.

He enjoyed collecting antique toy tractors, Coca-Cola memorabilia, dice and carnival glass.

Jerry took special interest in the Iowa Lottery and purchased tickets daily, and watched his numbers faithfully. He was also anxiously awaiting the decision on a Worth County casino.

Jerry was very concerned with the various activities and new businesses in Northwood, and enjoyed the new Dollar General Store in Northwood.

Left to cherish his memory are his parents, Joe and Mabel Ackerman, of Northwood; a sister, Bernice Lyons of Jacksonville Beach, Fla.; two brothers, Robert (Kay) Ackerman of Mason City, and Jim Ackerman and his special friend, Ralene Rippentrop, both of Northwood. Also left to cherish his memory are nieces and nephews as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents, several aunts, uncles and cousins.

ROSEMARY GEBEL

ALTA VISTA — Rosemary Gebel, 91, of Alta Vista, died Tuesday (Dec. 30, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton of natural causes.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Alta Vista. Burial will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery, also in Alta Vista.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and 7 p.m. scripture service. Visitation will also be from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Rosemary Frances Gebel was born Oct. 16, 1912, on a farm near Elma, the daughter of Ray and Margaret (Biwer) Sullivan.

She was a graduate of Immaculate Conception Academy in Elma and went on to attend Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids for a short time.

After her schooling, Rosemary was united in marriage to Art Gebel in November of 1931 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma.

Following their marriage, the couple farmed south of Alta Vista and later moved to the Gebel farm south and east of Alta Vista, where she was currently residing.

Rosemary enjoyed dancing, listening to music, especially Guy Lombardo and Lawrence Welk, visiting with friends, cooking and baking bread and pies.

She was a member of the St. Bernard Catholic Church in Alta Vista, Rosary Society, and the Alta Vista VFW Auxiliary.

Rosemary is survived by five children, Steve Gebel of Alta Vista, Gary Gebel of Alta Vista, Mary (Joe) McAvoy of Alta Vista, Richard (Joan) Gebel of Alta Vista and Dennis (Terri) Gebel of Cedar Falls; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jane Sullivan of Waterloo and Geraldine Wengert of Granite Falls, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Art (Feb. 5, 1962); two brothers, Leo and Dan Sullivan, and a son Robert (Dec. 31, 1988).

GLADYS E. BUEHNER

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Gladys E. Buehner, 89, of Daytona Beach, Fla., died Monday evening (Dec. 29, 2003) at a hospice in Port Orange, Fla., after a brief illness with leukemia.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the hospice chapel. Her body was cremated, according to her wishes.

Graveside services will be held in the spring at Fairview Cemetery in Waterloo.

Gladys Elaine Buehner was born Feb. 18, 1914, in Waterloo, daughter of John and Adelia (Stufflebeam) Buehner.

She worked at Perpetual Savings and Loan Association in Waterloo until her retirement in the late 1970s.

She never married. She and her sister, Lois, lived together for many years in Waterloo, including the years they lived with and cared for their mother following the death of their father.

She was a member of Grace Methodist Episcopal Church in Waterloo and First United Methodist Church in Port Orange, Fla.

Gladys was known for her great sense of humor, her love of life and her appreciation of every single day. She had a youthful outlook on life that made her a valued friend of young and old alike.

She loved traveling, was an avid reader and delighted in her new home in Florida, where she had moved in October 2000 to be nearer her brother, Jack. She especially valued time spent with family members in various parts of the country.

She is survived by a brother, Jack Buehner, and his wife, Marvyl, of Daytona Beach, Fla., and numerous nieces and nephews, including Kristin Buehner, of Mason City, Karin Buehner, of Eldridge, and Kaye (Buehner) Ockerman, of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her parents and by her sisters, Lois, Blanche, Mabel and Maxine.

LOUISE LABOUNTY

CHARLES CITY — Louise LaBounty, 97, a former resident of 1105 Riverside Drive, Charles City, died Monday (Dec. 29, 2003) at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Louise LaBounty will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. Carl Ries officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St. in Charles City, where the rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. and a vigil Scriptural wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Louise Lena Tommingo LaBounty was born March 3, 1906, in Floyd County, the daughter of Herman and Minnie (Polfuss) Tommingo. She graduated from Charles City High School in 1925.

On May 1, 1926, she was united in marriage to Harry LaBounty at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City.

Louise and Harry lived all their lives in Charles City. Harry died June 14, 2001.

She will be remembered for her skill in cooking both for her family and for various organizations, canning and sewing.

Her favorite activities included playing cards and bingo.

Louise was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and was active in the Sacred Heart Guild, Rosary Society and St. Joseph’s Circle. She had also been a member of the Charles City Senior Citizens.

Louise always enjoyed the time spent with all of her family.

Living family members include two daughters, Elaine Eppley and Lorraine (Gene) Krieger, both of Charles City; three sons, Donald (Char) LaBounty of Castle Rock, Colo., Kenneth (Dottie) LaBounty of Montezuma and James (Marcy) LaBounty of Charles City; 19 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter; a daughter-in-law, Arlene LaBounty of Burnsville, Minn., and two sisters-in-law, Elda Meyers and Grace Tommingo, both of Charles City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son, Keith, and a brother.

GREENE — Ellene Marie Landers, 78, of 17927 150th St., died Wednesday (Dec. 31, 2003) at the Liebe Care Center in Greene.

MASON CITY — Gladys J. Lysne, 89, of Mason City, died Monday (Dec. 29, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

MILDRED L. NEWGARD

MANLY — Mildred L. Newgard, 90, of Willow Point Assisted Living and formerly of 611 S. Broadway, Manly, died Tuesday (Dec. 30, 2003) at Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 428 W. Walnut St., Manly, with the Rev. Randy Nielsen officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 Spring St., Manly, and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Mildred, the daughter of Frederick and Hannah (Dahl) Hartz, was born Feb. 27, 1913, in West Rock, Minn. Upon the death of her parents at the young age of 10, she lived with relatives in Minneapolis, Minn., Glascoe, Mont., and Chicago, Ill.

She was confirmed in the Calvary Lutheran Church at Minneapolis and graduated from Calumet High School in Chicago.

She was introduced to her future husband, Severt, by her sister, Edna, and Severt’s brother, Loren, who had married four years prior.

Severt and Mildred were married in the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa, in 1935.

Mildred and Severt owned and operated what is now known as the Trading Post in Gordonsville, Minn. They sold the station in 1947 and bought a farm near Gordonsville, which they sold in 1950 and moved to Manly, Iowa.

Mildred worked at several local businesses and also for the school district.

She volunteered at the Manly Care Center and delivered Meals on Wheels.

She was very active within the Bethlehem Lutheran Church by teaching Sunday school and being a member of the Altar Guild and various circles.

Mildred enjoyed spending time with her family, playing cards and games, fishing, needlework, ceramics and gardening.

Mildred is survived by her children, Marlene Freudenberg and husband, Jack, of Mason City; Don Newgard and wife, Mary Ann, of St. Joseph, Mo., and Mary Ann Peterson and husband, Dennis, of Maple Grove, Minn. Also surviving are her grandchildren: Terry Newgard of Red Rock, Texas; Julie de Generes and husband, Lance, of Baton Rouge, La.; Karen Newgard of Saluda, N.C.; Doug Freudenberg and wife, Anna, of Mason City; Dawn Wright and husband, Bob, of Champlin, Minn., and Bradley Peterson and wife, Amy, of Woodbury, Minn.; her great-grandchildren; one sister and brother- in law, Irene and Vernis “Bun” Austin, of Lakewood, Calif.; many nieces and nephews, and her beloved dog, Rajah.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Severt, one sister Edna Newgard, and two infant brothers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Mildred Newgard Memorial Fund, 839 First St. N.W., Mason City, IA 50401, which will later be donated to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Manly.

CAROL BEULAH PHELPS

BAYARD — Carol Beulah Phelps, 85, of Bayard, died Sunday (Dec. 28, 2003).

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Bayard with Pastor Charles Thompson officiating. Interment will be in the Highland Cemetery near Bayard.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. today at the Dahn & Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden, with a 7 p.m. prayer service. The casket will be moved at 8:30 a.m. Friday for visitation until time of services at the church.

Carol was a homemaker and had worked with her husband on the farm. She had also been a substitute school bus driver for 30 years.

She was born Dec. 15, 1918 at Bagley, Iowa, and was the daughter of John and Mary (Packard) Beherens. As a young girl, she attended Bayard schools.

She married Frank J. Phelps on Jan. 15, 1936, at the Methodist parsonage in Van Meter, Iowa.

Carol had been a longtime member of the United Methodist Church in Bayard and was a member of the United Methodist Women of the church, holding several offices.

She had been a member of the Rural Mothers of PTA and had served as its secretary-treasurer for several years. She was a member of the Golden Age Group.

Surviving are a son, Ralph Phelps and his wife, Doris, of Coon Rapids, Iowa; a son, Michael Phelps, and his wife, Barbara, of Rockport, Mo.; a daughter, Patricia Donovan, of Winter Park, Fla.; a son, Stephen Phelps and his wife, Margaret, of Comstock, Mich.; a son, James Phelps and his wife, Janet, of Mason City; son-in-law, Michael Van Hamme, of Carlisle; seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter, Virginia Van Hamme; three brothers, Charles, Louis and Raymond, and four sisters, Ruth, Helen, Mabel and Agnes.

ALLISON — Harvey Ernest Schlitter, 82, of Allison and formerly of Monona, died Wednesday (Dec. 31, 2003) at the Allison Care Center.

JESSE JOSEPH TORRES

MASON CITY — Jesse Joseph Torres, formerly of Mason City, died on Nov. 24, 2003, in Washington, D.C., after a brief illness. He was 84 years old.

Mr. Torres immigrated to the United States from Guanajuato, Mexico, at the age of nine days with his parents and an older brother and sister. They arrived at Loredo, Texas, in a rowboat, according to immigration documents.

In Mason City, Torres attended Holy Family High School, where he played on the basketball team. He graduated from Loras College, in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1943.

Mr. Torres studied for a year at St. John’s Seminary in Collegeville, Minn., before moving to Washington, D.C.

In 1951, he earned a degree in library science from Catholic University.

From 1949 until 1979, he worked as a librarian in the Washington, D.C., office of the Pan American Health Organization of the United Nations World Health Organization.

After retiring, he became a bibliographer of writings by and about the Franciscan Order in the New World for the Academy of American Franciscan History, Potomac, Md.

Together with Mary B. Torres, his wife of 53 years, he raised six children: Anna Marie Murphy, of Medfield, Mass.; Carmen Torres, of Arlington, Mass.; Martha Fell (deceased); Elena Carroll, of Alexandria, Va.; Laura Thompson, of Taos, N.M., and Matthew Torres, of Catonsville, Md.

In addition to his wife and children, Mr. Torres leaves behind eight grandchildren; a sister, Sally Gallo, of Williamsburg, Iowa, and a brother, Isop Torres, of Mason City.

ELLEN L. YOUNG

LAKE MILLS — Ellen L. Young, 54, of Lake Mills and formerly of Mason City, Iowa, died at her home on Tuesday (Dec. 30, 2003).

Memorial graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John’s Lutheran Church Cemetery, Vilmar, rural Greene, with the Rev. Kevin Mackey of Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Ellen Louise Young was born on June 28, 1949, at Charles City, to parents, Frank and Leola (Kollmann) Young.

Her family moved to the Hampton area in 1964, and Ellen graduated from Hampton High School in 1967.

She went on to work at Good Shepherd Geriatric Center for 19 years, and then worked for Wellborn Industries for 15 years until her health failed.

Ellen had made her home in Mason City for a number of years prior to moving to Lake Mills in October 2003.

Ellen loved her dogs, flower gardening, fishing and crocheting, and was the best cook.

She especially enjoyed her nieces and nephews; spending time with them was a joy to her.

Survivors include her brothers, Roger Young and his wife, Beverly, of Waverly, Richard Young and his wife, JoAnn of Hansell; sisters, Avis Montgomery and her husband, Jim, of Lake Mills, and Beverly Mannes and her husband, Robert, of Lake Mills; nieces and nephews, James and Lynne Young, Tauhna Young, Sara and Rick Salinas and their son, Ruben, Leslie Young, Jeffrey and Kathy Young, Vera Mannes and Allen Mannes.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Leola Young, and a niece, Anna Louise Mannes.

HILDEGARD C. BECKMANN

CLEAR LAKE — Hildegard C. Beckmann, 78, of 909 Main St., Clear Lake, died Thursday (Jan. 1, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Redeemer Lutheran Church, 301 S. Main St. in Ventura, with the Rev. Daird W. Korth officiating.

It was her wish to be cremated.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake.

Memorials may be left to the Hildegard Beckmann Memorial Fund.

Hildegard Charlotte, the daughter of Willi and Elisabeth (Stark) Grunert, was born May 17, 1925, in Berlin, Germany. She received her education in Berlinchen. She worked as an apprentice clerk from 1949-1952.

Hildegard was united in marriage to Willi O. Beckmann on March 25, 1949, in Munich, Germany.

In 1952, she moved with her husband and daughter, Traudi, to Ventura, later moving to Clear Lake in 1953.

She worked for the Clear Lake Bakery, the Fashion Shop and Dawn’s Clothing, where she did tailoring. She later did tailoring from her home.

Hildegard enjoyed swimming, biking, walking and quilting for World Relief.

She was member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church of Ventura, where she sang in the choir.

Hildegard is survived by her husband, Willi, of Clear Lake; daughter, Traudi Schwab and her husband, Manfred; and one grandson, Markus Schwab, all of Munich, Germany; one sister in law, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Gerhard, Heinz and Werner.

VERA M. CLAUDE

MASON CITY — Vera M. (Richtsmeier) Claude, 81, of Hampton and formerly of Mason City, died Wednesday (Dec. 31, 2003) at the Franklin County Hospital in Hampton.

Funeral services for Vera will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Jim Stiles of First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home and one hour prior to services on Saturday.

Vera M. Richtsmeier was born May 14, 1922, the daughter of Herman H. and Mazie F. (Bowers) Richtsmeier in Hardin County. She attended country school in Franklin County for eight years. Vera then graduated from Geneva High School.

She then began the training that would develop into a lifelong career. She enrolled in nurse’s training at Evangelical Deaconess Hospital in Marshalltown.

Upon the completion of her nurse’s training, she came to Mason City to work for the Park Hospital-North Iowa Medical Center.

She was united in marriage to Russell L. Claude on Aug. 23, 1954, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Vera retired from the Park Hospital in Mason City in 1984 after a 44-year career as a registered nurse.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Iowa Nurses Association from 1943-1984, and an alumnus of the Nurse’s Training Program in Marshalltown.

Vera is survived by her brother, Carl F. Richtsmeier and wife, Doris, of Hampton; sister, Leola “Jean” Chaney and husband, James, of Hampton; brother, Virgil “Dutch” Richtsmeier and wife, Dolores, of Hampton, and sister, Marian Johnson and husband, Dale, of Hampton. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Vera was preceded in death by her parents; husband Russell; infant sister, Fern, and sister, Merna Ites.

Ellene Marie Minnie Schmidt was born July 3, 1925, in rural Coldwater Township, Butler County, a daughter of Henry P. and Martha (Meyer) Schmidt, and died Wednesday (Dec. 31, 2003) at the Liebe Care Center in Greene.

She was baptized on July 24, 1925, at St. Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church at Vilmar, and received her education at Coldwater No. 5 County School.

As a young lady, she worked for the Greene Produce Co. and also a sales representative for Fuller Brush.

On Oct. 8, 1949, she was united in marriage to Wilbur H. Landers at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They lived in Wisconsin several years before returning to Greene in 1952. They moved to their present farm in 1955.

Ellene had many interests and hobbies, including sewing, quilting, crocheting, playing cards, cooking and gardening.

She also enjoyed reading and doing crossword puzzles.

Her greatest love was her family and friends, and spending those special times with them, including the birthday parties, Sunday family gatherings and reunions.

She was confirmed a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church on April 8, 1952. She was a member of WELCA, Greene Woman’s Club and the High School Music Parents Association. She served as president of several of these organizations.

Gladys had been a lifelong and faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She had also lived in Mason City for 87 years.

She is survived by one sister, May Olson and husband, Wilbert, of Columbus, Ohio; niece, Marilyn Hoffman and husband Jerry of Lake Mills; niece, Cindy Hanna and husband Daryl of Forest City; niece, Sharon Zabrok and husband Joe of Cottage Grove, Minn.; niece, Suzanne Brandt and husband John of Hanlontown; niece, JoAnne Dummermuth and husband Mike of Columbus, Ohio; niece, Janet Davis of Brighton, Mich.; nephew, Steve Olson and wife Marcelle of Houston, Texas; niece, Marjorie Swanson and husband Richard of Oregon; and niece, Vicki Sisco of Michigan.

HARVEY PALS

BELMOND — Harvey Pals, 82, of Belmond, passed away on Wednesday (Dec. 31, 2003) at the Hampton Health Care Center in Hampton.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Reformed Church in Meservey with the Rev. Rodney Meester officiating. Burial will take place in the Meservey Cemetery in Meservey.

Harvey was born Feb. 18, 1921, on the family farm in Franklin County to Hilko and Tillie (Blau) Pals. He attended country school through the seventh grade, after which he farmed and worked odd jobs in the area.

In 1940, he married his first wife, Maxine Swenson. This union was blessed with one daughter, Iva Jeanne.

Harvey joined the Army in 1941 and was soon discharged due to health complications. Once out of the Army, he farmed in the Wright and Franklin County areas until his divorce from Maxine in 1965.

Harvey continued farming in the area for a little while longer until he married Fonda Martin in 1967. They made a home together and he decided to switch careers.

He was employed by the Wright County Conservation Park Association. Harvey was with them until his retirement in 1983.

Although retired, he had to keep busy doing something. Antiquing was much more than a hobby for him. Harvey loved going to auctions, finding great antiques and talking with everyone about some of the treasures they may have had in their homes.

He was also an active member of the First Reformed Church in Meservey.

When his health began to fail, he was placed in the Belmond Hospital, then the Sheffield Care Center and finally in the Alzheimer’s Unit at the Hampton Health Care Center, where he had been for the last four years.

Harvey is survived by his wife, Fonda, of Belmond; his daughter, Iva Jeanne Hill and her husband, Erwin, of Albert Lea, Minn.; three grandchildren, Dennis Hill and his wife, Chrissy, Hazel Green, Wis., Kenneth Hill and his wife, Michelle, of Cedar Rapids, and Rodney Hill and his wife, Teri, of Denver, Colo.; four great-grandchildren, Elliott, Cameren, Sydnee and Brady; two sisters, Viola Barkema, of Belmond, and Iona Yost, of Las Vegas, Nev., and two brothers, Leslie Pals, of Mason City, and Louie Pals, of Marshalltown.

He is preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers, three sisters and an infant daughter.

WEBSTER CITY — Mary Scieszinski, 88, of Webster City, died Wednesday (Dec. 21, 2003) at the Hamilton Hospital in Webster City.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Webster City with the Rev. John Flaherty officiating. Burial will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery at Melrose.

Mary Lillian Donahue, daughter of James and Sara Barry Donahue, was born Dec. 8, 1915, at Melrose. She received her education at Doughtery and attended college at Ottumwa Heights and Mason City Junior College.

She taught in rural schools in Cerro Gordo County for three years.

On Nov. 3, 1937, she married Patrick Joseph Scieszinski at Dougherty. The couple resided at Dougherty and her husband was employed with the Chicago-North Western Transportation Co. railroad.

In 1953, he was transferred to Webster City. She had worked as a clerk with J.C. Penney at Webster City for 15 years. She retired in 1977. Mr. Scieszinski died Nov. 3, 1989. She continued to reside at Webster City.

Mrs. Scieszinski is survived by a daughter, Sister Mary Louise P.B.V.M., of Humboldt; and two sons, Joseph Scieszinski, of Webster City, and James Scieszinski, of Simi Valley, Calif.

In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents; two daughters in infancy, Margaret and Mary Scieszinski; sister, Margaret Donahue, and a brother, James Donahue.

She was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of the Americas and Heritage Hunters.

CHARLES CITY — Lawrence J. Tegtmeier, 66, of Charles City, died Thursday (Dec. 31, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Lawrence J. Tegtmeier was born Aug. 30, 1937, on his mother’s birthday in North Washington, Iowa, the son of Ewald and Mary (Biretz) Tegtmeier.

Lawrence attended school at Riverton School #2 near Nashua, and the family moved to Charles City, where Lawrence graduated from Immaculate Conception Catholic High School in 1956.

On June 14, 1958, he was united in marriage to Joyce Wegner, and to this union five children were born. Lawrence later met Sharon LaRue, and they shared many years together.

Lawrence worked at Rath’s Packing in Waterloo, Becker Roofing in Charles City and for White Farm in Charles City until the plant closing in 1993.

He then went to work for the Charles City Park and Rec. Department until the time of his death.

Lawrence enjoyed Rendezvous, traveling, riding his motorcycle, leatherwork and knife forging, but his family was always most important.

Lawrence is survived by his children: Denise Faber and her husband, Alan, of Woden, Deanne Knapp and her husband, Chuck, of Charles City, Darrin Tegtmeier and his wife, Debby, of Mollalla, Ore., Rachelle Busch and her husband, Steve, of Trenton, Mo., and Trevor Tegtmeier and his wife, Kristi, of Jacksonville, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; a brother, Leonard Tegtmeier and his wife, Bonnie, of Charles City; and a special friend, Sharon LaRue, of Mason City, as well as many other relatives and friends.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Donald Tegtmeier, and a sister-in-law, Darlene Tegtmeier.

ELLA MAE WEBER

LUVERNE — Ella Mae Weber was born on Dec. 24, 1910, at Kingfisher, Okla., to Alphonso and Lulu Richards Jordan. She attended country school near Irvington, and finished her schooling at the high school in Algona.

After her schooling, Ella helped her parents on the farm and also worked at Bloom’s Department Store in Algona.

Ella was married to Alvin L. Weber on Jan. 20, 1931, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple farmed in the Irvington and LuVerne area, moving into LuVerne in 1966.

Ella was an active member of the LuVerne United Meth-odist Church, where she was past president of the UMW and also held its lifelong membership. She also was active in the God’s Helpers Day Circle at the church. Ella was the volunteer chairman of the American Cancer Society in southern Kossuth County. She also belonged to the Goodwill Club and the local canasta card club.

Ella loved flowers, especially violets and roses. She en-joyed visiting and having coffee and tea with all of her “pop-in” friends.

Ella loved her family, and especially enjoyed hearing about all of the activities of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ella became a resident of the Algona Manor Care Center in Algona on April 19, 2002. She died there on Thursday (Jan. 1, 2004) at the age of 93.

Ella is survived by her three sons, Jerry and wife Joan, of South Haven, Minn., LeRoy and wife Audrey, of LuVerne, and Charles and wife Nancy, of Cedar Rapids. Also surviving are her grandchildren; her great-grandchildren; one sister, Edna Jordan, of Algona; one brother-in-law, Dr. Ralph Weber, of Bancroft, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Alvin in 1987, and two brothers, Leo and Joe Jordan.

BELMOND — John Birger Rokke, 92, of Belmond, died Friday (Jan. 2, 2004) at the Belmond Medical Center.

John Birger, the son of Paul and Martine (Hedstein) Rokke, was born June 26, 1911, in Skatval, Norway. He was baptized and confirmed in the Skatval Kirke. He at-tended country school in Norway, where he excelled in track events.

John worked on the home farm until the age of 18, when he immigrated to America to the homes of his uncles, Nickolie and Henry Nelson, and aunts, Kristine and Oline Mehus.

From 1931 to 1937, he worked as a farm hand for Jake and Gerhard Thompson.

In 1938 and 1939, he work-ed at the Olaf elevator.

During the summer of 1938, he worked on a fishing boat in Alaska.

On Oct. 7, 1939, John married Hazel Oscarson at the Danish Lutheran Church in Alden, Minn. They farmed in the Olaf area for 40 years, moving to Belmond in 1979.

They wintered in Arizona for 14 years, traveled frequen-tly and visited John’s brother and sister in Norway many times.

This union was blessed with three children, Charlotte Ann, Paul Arlon and Jon Douglas.

Hazel died suddenly on March 3, 1988. John continued helping on the farm and crafted many items in his woodworking shop.

On Aug. 19, 1989, John married Arlet Halvorson Nelson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, and they resided in Belmond. They also visited Norway, the last time in 1997.

John is survived by his wife, Arlet, of Belmond; his son-in-law, Paul Wright of Clarksville, Tenn.; his son Paul Rokke and his wife, Charlotta, of Belmond; his son, the Rev. Douglas Rokke and his wife, Randi Jo, of La Porte City; Curtis Nelson and his wife, Dale, of Grandview, Mo.; Byron Nelson and his wife, Sue, of Evans, Ga.; 11 grandchildren, Gina and her husband Steve, Jared, Jason, Martina, Nelson, Kirsten, Troy and his wife Diane, Eric and his wife Patricia, Sara and her husband Steve, Michelle and Jennifer; six great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Lucas, Joseph, Sarah, Korey and Amy; one brother, Helge Rokke of Sacramento, Calif., and one sister, Margit Skjaret, of Opphaug, Norway.

LABENA ‘BEA’ JONES

HAMPTON — Labena “Bea” Halfwassen Jones, was born Jan. 9, 1913, in Franklin County to Peter and Tena (Dirksen) Halfwassen and died on Thursday (Jan. 1, 2004) at the Hampton Health Care Center.

She attended the Chapin Consolidated School and graduated in 1930. In 1931, she enrolled in Hamilton Business College in Mason City and completed a stenographic and secretarial course.

After graduation, she was employed for a short time in the offices of the Mason City Brick & Tile Co.

In 1934, she came to Hamp-ton and was employed for a short time in the “Corn Hog” office under the direction of Manning Howell, who was then the Extension officer.

In 1934, she was employed with the Franklin County Relief Office and in 1945 was promoted to director of Social Services until her retirement in September of 1978.

Bea was married to Ralph Jones on July 1, 1957.

She was a member of the Eastern Star and received her 50-year pin and certificate in November 1989.

She was active in the United Methodist Church in Hampton, and was a member of the Leah Circle and Naomi Circle.

Bea was also a member of the Ladies Prayer Group which met every Thursday morning and had been a mem-ber for more than 40 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph A. Jones; her mother and father, Peter and Tena Halfwassen; two brothers, Conny and Henry Halfwassen; two sisters, Elizabeth Albers and Lena Meints, and a nephew, Mark Halfwassen.

DONALD H. ASBE

MASON CITY - Donald H. Asbe, 75, of Mason City, died Thursday (Jan. 1, 2004) at his home.

Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City, with the Rev. Jim Maglesson officiating.

Donald H. Asbe was born on Oct. 8, 1928, in Kensett, the son of Henry A. and Ida E. (Eliason) Asbe. He attended Ventura High School where he completed the 11th grade.

He enlisted in the United States Air Force in July of 1950, where he served as an Airman 1st Class in the Korean War until being discharged in July of 1954.

Soon after, Donald moved back to Mason City, and wed Catherine L. Whitney on Nov. 21, 1954.

He was a dedicated, hard working man, serving as a foreman at International Minerals for 21 years. He then served as a mechanic for Lehigh for 21 years until retiring in 1991.

In his retired life, he focused on his family, golfing at Rockford Country Club, as well as fishing at Clear and Leach lakes.

He was also a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and the VFW Auxiliary.

He will be remembered as a kindhearted man who was a great father, grandfather, great-grandfather, neighbor and friend.

CLEAR LAKE - Joan M. Collins, 69, of 2301 South Third Street, died Saturday (Jan. 3, 2004) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpat-ient Unit in Mason City.

A time for her family to greet friends will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North Fourth Street, Clear Lake.

According to Joan's wishes, her body has been cremated.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be directed to a memorial fund in her name.

Joan was born Jan. 5, 1934, in Thornton, a daughter of Leland and Evelyn (Miller) Harthan. She graduated from Thornton High School, and was later united in marriage to Duane Collins on March 28, 1954, in Thornton. For nearly 50 years of marriage, the couple lived in the Mason City and Clear Lake area.

Joan worked for various retailers including Sears, Wal-Mart and House of Fabrics, and also was a real es-tate broker in both Mason City and Clear Lake. She volunteered at Opportunity Village in Clear Lake for many years.

Joan enjoyed reading, working on her computer and traveling all over the world.

She is survived by her husband, Duane; three children, Kim, Kathi, and Kristi Collins; three grandchildren, Tonya Clifford, Tricia Collins, and Jeramya Clifford; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Janice Harthan-Kerdus; and a brother, Jerry Harthan.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Jack Harthan; and an infant son.

BELMOND - Irma E. (Krebill) Griffiths, 87, of Belmond, formerly of Indianola, passed away Thursday (Jan. 1, 2004) at the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond.

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Belmond, with Pastor Paddy Druhl officiating. Burial will take place at 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Indianola.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick's Lane South in Belmond, and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

Irma E. Griffiths was born on Aug. 15, 1916, the daughter of Harry J. and Edna L. Krebill, in Donnellson. After graduating from Donnellson High School, she attended Parsons College in Fairfield, and the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. Irma then taught in country schools.

On June 10, 1939, she was united in marriage to Clement W. Griffiths in Donnellson. The couple made their home in Fairfield, where they were blessed with a daughter, Dona.

While Clem served in the military, Irma worked at Schaefer Pen Company in Fort Madison. With Clem's return, the family moved to Marshalltown and was blessed with a son, Denis. The family then lived in South Dakota and Minnesota for a time be-fore moving to Indianola in 1951.

Irma devoted her life to her family and church. She worked in various capacities at the Indianola elementary and high schools. She also served as a teachers aid at Slinker Opportunity School in Des Moines. Often Irma could be found at the First United Methodist Church doing volunteer work or participating with the Women's Society and Rebecca's Circle.

In 1978, the Indianola Business Professional Women named Irma "Woman of the Year." She moved to Belmond in 1995, and then to the Belmond Health Care Center in 1998.

Irma's hobbies included sewing, crocheting, gardening, walking and word jumbles. She loved children and often visited and babysat her grandchildren. To all that knew Irma, she was a devoted, sweet, caring and giving person.

Irma is survived by her daughter, Dona Cleveland, of Belmond; son, Denis and his wife, Linda, of Braselton, Ga.; five grandchildren: Daniel and his wife, Jodie, David and his wife, Terra, Dana and his wife, Laurie, John and Jane; six great-grandchildren, Alex, Sean, Kellen, Conner, Langley, and Max; sister, Wilma Bryant and her husband, Ernest, of Indianola; sister-in-law, Leotta Griffiths, of Albia; nieces, Judith Schneller and her husband, John, and Sandra McJimsey and her husband, George; and their children and families.

Irma is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her son-in-law, Don Cleveland.

Mary M. Brooks was born June 22, 1928, in Morristown, Minn., the daughter of George and Lillian (Herley) Brooks. She attended school in Morristown, and on Sept. 24, 1948, she was united in marriage to Stanley Klampe in Northwood. She later married Ivan Mincks on Aug. 11, 1984, in Charles City.

Mary worked at Birdseye in Waseca, Minn., and for Brown Printing Co. for 20 years in Waseca.

Mary was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Dorcus Circle at St. John, and was also a mem-ber of the American Legion Auxiliary.

She enjoyed crocheting, reading, cooking, and loved flowers and plants. Mary particularly enjoyed just being out and around people.

Mary is survived by six daughters, Andrea (Donald) Rahn, of Waseca, Minn., Lynnette (Richard) Prange, of Owatonna, Minn., Brenda (Steven) Rosa, of White Bear Lake, Minn., Marcella (Richard) Eichmeier, of Lake Mills, Mary Ellen (David) Ostendorf, of Waseca, Minn., and Jo-Ann (Jack) Schoonorver, of Cosmos, Minn.; four step-children: Michael Mincks, of Webster City, Lanny Mincks, of Charles City, Jay Mincks, of Charles City, and Linda Logan, of Charles City. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; two sisters, Shirley (Ervin) Roeker, of Eagle Lake, Minn., and Bonnie Schuenke, of Faribault, Minn.; and one brother, Ronald (Alfreda) Brooks, of Germany.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband; one son; three sisters; three brothers; two grandchildren; and one step-grandchild.

RUDD - Bert Field, 94, of Rudd, died Friday morning (Jan. 2, 2004) at his home surrounded by his family.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, 611 Sixth St., Rudd, with Pastor Jim Turner and Chaplain Kathy Graves officiating. In-terment will take place in Riverside Cemetery in Rockford.

Bert Field was born May 26, 1909, in Magnolia, Ill., to Hallie (Hall) and Nomen Field Sr. He was the fourth child of 14 children born to his parents. Bert attended school in Illinois and at the approximate age of 11, moved with his family to Floyd County, where he remained the rest of his life.

On Aug. 28, 1927, Bert was united in marriage to Mildred Marie Shultz in Nora Springs. They became the proud parents of six children.

"Grandpa Bert," as he was fondly known by his family and friends, was a hard working farmer. In 1945, Bert and Mildred built a new home and planted the landscaping on the land, which ultimately became their family farm.

Bert found great pride in raising a variety of animals including mink, hogs, cattle, turkeys and chickens.

He was especially proud of his large, black bull, "Charlie," who had the disposition of being more like a pet. Bert currently had the companionship of a special cat, "Susie" in his home.

Following Bert's retirement from grain farming, he busied himself tending to four large vegetable gardens, his strawberry bed, his melon patches and raising chickens. He was well-known for his generosity of sharing his produce from the gardens and selling fresh brown eggs from his laying hens.

Bert had a great passion for spending as much time as possible outdoors. Throughout Bert's life, he enjoyed his leisure time fur trapping and fishing in area creeks and rivers and hunting all types of wild game, especially deer.

He treasured traveling to the western states, such as Wyoming and Montana, to camp in tents and experience hunting outside of Iowa.

Many of Bert's relatives, neighbors and friends will recall the challenges of game playing with Bert. He enjoyed many card and board games such as canasta, cribbage, dice, 500, pinochle and marbles.

Spending time with his family was important to Bert, and his children claim that their father always "lived life the way he wanted and to the fullest." They further claim that he had a wonderful sense of humor, and was witty, soft-spoken, strong-willed and knowledgeable. He was very much a naturalist and not materialistic.

Bert will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his daughters; Karol (Burt) Kelsey and Margery (Virden) Demaray, all of Rudd; his son Dennis (Sharon) Field, of Nora Springs; his sister, Marlys (Mario) Rinaldi, of Cupertino, Calif.; and his brother, Jerry (Jan) Field, of Manchester, Tenn. Bert will also be sadly missed by his 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.

Preceding Bert in death were his wife, Mildred, of 64 years; his parents, Hallie and Nomen Field Sr.; two daughters, Marilyn and Mary Ann Field; a son, Jim Field; eight brothers; three sisters; one grandson, Chris Field; one great-granddaughter, Santana Field; and one great-great-granddaughter, Daisy Fox.

Bertha E. Dockwell was born on Jan. 22, 1929, near Rowan, the daughter of William and Della (Langdon) Retleff. Bertha grew up in the Rowan area. She was baptized and confirmed in the Congregational church in Rowan. Bertha attended school and graduated from Rowan High School in 1947.

On Nov. 21, 1948, she was united in marriage to George Dockwell at her folks' home near Rowan. George and Bertha farmed near Coulter, Rowan, and Riceville. They moved to Belmond in 1966.

Bertha worked for the Belmond schools as a cook. She was a good wife and mother who took care of her family. Bertha was a home-bodied person who was always willing to help others.

Bertha was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, and the Know Your Neighbor Club in Rowan.

Bertha is survived by her husband, George, of Belmond; daughter, Vickie Dockwell and Kevin Nye, of Clear Lake; sons, Kim and his wife, Linda, of Ventura, and David Dockwell and Tonya High, of Belmond; four grandchildren, Ryan, Lance, Kent, and Brian; sister, June Chapman, of Belmond; an aunt and uncle, Eugene and Ione Langdon, of Spring Valley, Minn.

On Oct. 20, 1973, Judy was united in marriage to David Geerts at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Postville. Follow-ing their marriage, the couple resided in North Washington, and she worked as a bookkeeper for the Farmer's Co-op in North Washington and New Hampton.

He was employed as a painter for most of his life, and lived in Racine, Wis., Alaska, Arkansas and Mason City. He returned to Mt. Pleasant in October, 2003.

She liked to work crossword puzzles, play cards, read and embroider. She enjoyed playing with her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

ST. CROIX FALLS, Wis. — Lillian May Snyder, 92, of St. Croix Falls, Wis., formerly of Mason City, died Sunday (Jan. 4, 2004) at the St. Croix Falls Nursing Home.

CHARLES W. STARR

LAPORTE CITY — Charles W. Starr, 69, of LaPorte City, died Saturday (Jan. 3, 2004) at the Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo of an aneurysm.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor David Werges, St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery in Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and for one hour prior to services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Charles W. Starr was born on Dec. 14, 1934, in Mitchell County, the son of Charles and Dorothy (Johnson) Starr. He received his education at Deerefield No. 3 in rural Chickasaw County and graduated from Colwell High School.

Charles married Elaine Johnson in June of 1956. He later married Clare Foote on Feb. 28, 1992.

Charles worked as a mechanic in North Iowa, later going on to work at John Deere in Waterloo where he worked for 30 years, retiring in 1995.

He had many hobbies including collecting and working on vintage cars, fishing, hunting, collecting guns, and spending time at the cabin in Minnesota.

He loved to visit and spent many hours visiting his many family members and friends and often helped others with projects, taking them to appointments, and helping with travel needs. Charles lived life to the fullest.

Charles is survived by his loving wife, Clare Foote, of LaPorte City; one son, Benny (Mary) D. Starr, of Elma; three step-sons: Russel Foote, John Foote, and David Foote; one step-daughter, Carol Foote Conry; two brothers, James (Rose) Starr, of Charles City, and Herbert (Betty) Starr, of Clear Lake; five sisters: Lorraine (Elvin) Enderson, of Lake Mills, Delores (Bob) Wright, Shirley (Larry) Katcher, and Lucile (Bill) Dunn, all of Charles City, and Marjorie (LeRoy) Roethler, of Elma; 11 grandchildren; eight greatgrandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Dorothy Starr; and one step-son, Bruce Foote.

DENNIS L. VIERS

GREENE — A Funeral Mass for Dennis L. Viers, 58, of 205 South Water Street, Greene, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene, with Rev. Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Reid’s Funeral Chapel in Greene, where there will be a Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Tuesday at the church one hour before services.

Dennis Laverne Viers was born March 14, 1945, in Greene, son of Eugene Robert and Ruth Mae (Skillen) Viers, and died Friday (Jan. 2, 2004) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

He received his education in the Greene Public Schools.

He entered into the United States Army on May 31, 1966, where he served with the 101st Airborne “Screaming Eagles” in Vietnam.

Dennis was awarded the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Parachute Badge. He was released from active duty on Jan. 29, 1969.

He also served with the Support Company 1st Battalion 1133 Infantry, Army National Guard.

On June 14, 1969, he was united in marriage to Judy K. Belden in Nashua. They made their home in Greene, and to this union was born two daughters.

Dennis was employed by the City of Greene until 1973, and later worked for White Farm Equipment in Charles City until the factory closed. He was employed by Fischel Construction Co. until 1995, and was currently employed by Greene Ag Services.

Dennis will be remembered as an avid fisherman, and one who enjoyed Nascar races and football. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who enjoyed spending time and going fishing with his grandchildren, and pheasant hunting with his son-in-law.

He will be sadly missed by his wife, Judy, of Greene; his two daughters, Debra Viers, of Greene, and Michelle (Shane) Ott, of Offut AFB Nebraska; three grandchildren: McKennah, Kaleb, and Logan; his mother, Ruth Viers, of Allison; one brother, Jim (Jo) Viers, of Rockwell City; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father on March 24, 2003; two brothers: Kenneth Viers on May 8, 1998, and Robert “Butch” Viers on June 3, 2001; and a nephew, Joseph Viers, on Nov. 25, 1977.
