He began teaching at Garfield #5, where he taught for five years before he married Eileen McCormick at the St. Boniface Catholic Church on August 23, 1938.

Ed farmed until 1980 when they moved into Garner. Ed was an accomplished musician and sang with the St. Wenceslaus choir for 42 years. Music was in his heart. Ed and his brother, Syl, formed Malek's Accordion Band in the 1930's. They played many wedding and anniversary dances until the 1960s. Then Ed and Marv Lackore started the L & M Band with Nancy (Lackore) Kaduce, Joe Buzicky and Tom Malek. They played until the 1980's.

Ed was a member of the Lions Club for several years and a highlight of his life was a trip for the entire family to the International Lions Convention in New York City in 1965. He played organ in the Iowa Room at the Hotel Continental. He enjoyed making tapes and sharing these with friends and relatives around the world.

Ed was a former member of the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan and a present member of the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner. He also belonged to the Catholic Workman Lodge for 76 years. Ed was elected Hancock County Democratic Supervisor in 1960 and served in that position for 14 years.
