Raymond Lewis Rapp
January 8, 2003
Raymond Lewis
Rapp, 92, of Forest City, died on Friday, January 3, 2003, at the Muse
Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held on Monday, January 6, at the Saratoga
Presbyterian Church in Saratoga, Iowa. The Rev. Tim Sir officiated. Burial
was in the Saratoga Cemetery with military honors.
Raymond Lewis Rapp, was born on December 23, 1910, the
son of John and Selma Anderson Rapp in Britt, Iowa. He received his
education in rural schools of Hancock County. He married Josephine Booth
and to this union three children were born. Jimmy died at birth, Paul
Ray lives in Richmond, Missouri and Janine lives in North Hollywood, California. They
divorced in 1948.
On March 8, 1949, Raymond married Dorothy Robinson
at Rochester, Minnesota and to this union three children were born, Timothy
and his fiancée, Lynn Sonneman of Seattle, Washington, Ted and his wife, Sarah
of Ankeny and Polly Miller and her husband, Frank of Forest City.
Raymond volunteered for service in the United
States Army in the spring of 1943. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge
and was awarded the Purple Heart. His lifetime was filled with a number
of work experiences, including truck driver, backhoe service, corn
shelling and dealing in scrap metals.
Raymond enjoyed gardening, most often at the
acreage known as "The Other Place." He also became an avid Cubs fan and
enjoyed watching the Iowa Hawkeyes basketball games.
Rapp was preceded in death by his parents; one
son, Jimmy; four brothers; and six sisters.
He
is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dorothy of Forest City; three sons,
Paul, Tim and Ted; two daughters, Janine and Polly; one sister, Mildred Hernon of Forest City; two half-sisters, Shirley Netlund and Alice
Rayhons, both of Garner; one half-brother, John Rapp of Caney, Kansas; 10
grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Patricia Onken
January 15, 2003
Patricia Onken, age 59, of
Topock, Arizona, passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2003, at her home.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Friday, January 17, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage. Lay Pastor Gary Gilbert will officiate.
Interment will be in the Orchard Cemetery in Orchard. Visitation is from
5-8:00 p.m., on Thursday, January 16, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral
Home.
Patricia was born on August 14, 1943 in Detroit, Michigan, the
daughter of Salvatore and Lillian (Haggerty) Leon. She was a supervisor at
the Flamingo Hilton in Laughlin, Nevada. Patricia was united in marriage to Eno Onken
on February 14, 1989 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Patricia's survivors include her husband, Eno
Onken of Topick, Arizona; two daughters, Denise Garcia of Yucca Valley, California and
Debbie Tull of Carson City, Nevada; one son, Jerry Marshall of Hesperia, California;
three sisters, Anna Guard, Phyllis Schaupp and Bertha Adragna; three
brothers, Tony Adragna, John Rehm and Danny Rehm; eight grandchildren; and
four great-grandchildren.

Myrtle E. Davis
January 15, 2003
Myrtle E. Davis, age 82, of
Mason City and formerly of Orchard, died suddenly at her home on Friday,
January 10, 2003.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 14, at the
Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage. Rev. Dennis Hanson and Rev. Roy Ott officiated. Interment was in the Grafton Cemetery.
Myrtle was born on March 11, 1920, on the family farm
near Grafton, the daughter of Alvin and Esther (Walk) Kruger. She was
educated in rural schools. Myrtle was united in marriage to James Davis
on March 26, 1945, at the Methodist Church in Plymouth. They farmed in
the Grafton, Nora Springs and Carpenter areas. They retired and moved to
Orchard. They moved to Mason City in September of 2002.
Myrtle was a
member of the Our Savior's Lutheran Church and her church circle in Osage.
She taught Sunday School, enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, candy
making, crocheting and sewing.
Myrtle was preceded in death by her parents; an
infant brother, Richard Kruger; and two brothers, Harvey Kruger and Walter
Kruger.
Her survivors include a husband, James Davis of
Mason City; one son, Phillip Davis of Grafton and his son, John Davis and
wife, Heather of Las Vegas, Nevada and their daughter, Jaden; one daughter,
Karen Gourley and husband, Steve of Mason City and their children, Chad Gourley of Ames and Dawn Bonner of Mason City and her children, Kristina
and Selena; four brothers, Rev. Harold Kruger and wife, Jacqueline of Geneseo, New York, Edward Kruger and wife, Maxine of Grafton, Rev. Robert
Kruger of Rock Island, Illinois and Allen Kruger and Shirley of Morrisville, Missouri;
five sisters, Gladys Grant of Osage, Dora Runyon and husband, David of
Council Bluffs, Ruth Erdmann and husband, Philip of Osage, Clarice Wilde
and husband, Robert of Osage and Deanna Sande and husband, Gary of St. Paul,
Minnesota; two sisters-in-law, Juanita Kruger and Rose Marie Kruger,
both
of Northwood; and several nieces and nephews.

Margaret Rice
January 15, 2003
Margaret Rice, age 93, of
Osage, died on Friday, January 10, 2003, at the Faith Lutheran Home in
Osage.
Funeral services were held on Monday, January 13, at the Faith Lutheran Home in
Osage. Rev. Dennis Hanson and Rev. Roy Ott officiated. Interment was in
the Osage Cemetery.
Margaret was born on April 24, 1909 in Pekin, Illinois. At six
years of age she was adopted by Mrs. Ferd "Lena" Hartwig of Osage.
Margaret was baptized and confirmed at the St. John's Lutheran Church south
of Osage. In 1930, she married Smith Rice and they spent most of their
life in Osage. She was one of the original employees of the Faith
Lutheran Home where she worked for a few years.
After retiring she was
an active volunteer in church and hospital work. Margaret was a member
of the Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage. She also loved to fish.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband,
Smith in 1966; her step-brother, Walter Hartwig; and nephews, John Rice,
Dr. Dean Rice and Robert "Bob" Hartwig.
Her survivors include three nieces, Joanne Decker
and husband, Lester of Osage, Gloria Rice of Osage and Marilyn Rice
Horner and husband, Bill of Ohio.

Taylor John Koenigs
January 15, 2003
Taylor John Koenigs, age 9,
of Meyer, died on Sunday, January 12, 2003, in McIntire, Iowa.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, January 15, at
the Sacred
Heart Catholic Church in Meyer, Iowa. Reverend Mark Reasoner officiated.
Burial was in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Meyer.
Taylor John Koenigs, was born on January 12, 1994 in
Austin, Minnesota, to Mark and Sindee (Hockens) Koenigs. He attended the St. Ansgar
Elementary School in the 3rd grade. Taylor enjoyed school and his
teachers. He enjoyed playing with his dog, Ruby and riding his go-kart.
He liked to go fishing with his Dad and brought happiness to everyone
who he knew. Taylor enjoyed playing with his cousins and loved spending
time with all of his family. Taylor will be dearly missed by many aunts,
uncles, cousins, grandparents and other relatives.
Preceding Taylor in death were his brother, Casey;
and three cousins.
His survivors include his parents; one sister,
Angela Koenigs of Stevens Point, Wisconsin; maternal grandparents, Florence and
Al Holmen of Austin, Minnesota; paternal grandparents, Deo and Joan Koenigs of
St. Ansgar; and paternal great-grandmother, Marie Koenigs of Stacyville.

Margaret J. Olsen
January 15, 2003
Margaret J. Olsen, age 76,
of Osage, died on Sunday, January 12, 2003, at the St. Mary's Hospital
in Rochester, Minnesota.
Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m., on Wednesday, January 15, at
the Our
Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage. Rev. Dennis Hanson and Rev. Roy Ott
officiated. Interment was in the Rock Creek Cemetery, rural Osage.
Margaret J. Olsen, was born on March 19, 1926, on the
family farm west of Carpenter, Iowa, the daughter of Clarence and Ruth
(Parker) Johnson. She graduated from the Orchard High School in 1943 and
then attended Hamilton Business School in Mason City. She worked as a
secretary for Seig Auto. Margaret was united in marriage to Lowell Olsen
on October 12, 1946, at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church, rural Osage. They farmed
for six years and then purchased Olsen Implement in Osage, where they
lived their entire married life.
She was a member of the Our Savior's
Lutheran Church in Osage, where she was an active member in the Eve
Circle, the Church Choir and she had been an officer in the women's
group. Margaret enjoyed her family, grandchildren and
great-grandchild and attending all of their activities including sports,
music and other extra-curricular activities.
Those preceding her in death include her parents;
one son, Jon Olsen; one sister and husband, Florence and Alvy Borcherding;
two brothers, Kenneth Johnson and Dale Johnson; sister-in-law and
husband, Beatrice and Clyndon Gast; sister-in-law, Daisy Olsen; and
brother-in-law, LaVern Schallock.
Margaret is survived by her husband, Lowell Olsen
of Osage; two daughters, Marcia Taeger and husband, Keith of West
Burlington and their children, Vincent Taeger and wife, Kelli, Gretchen
Harkness and husband, Chris and their son, Samuel, Nicole Taeger, Diane
Kleckner and husband, Larry of Audubon and their children, Linsey Petersen
and husband, Perry, Allison Ullestad and husband, Erik, Laura Kleckner,
three sons, Jim Olsen and wife, Beth of Osage and their children, Jacob
Olsen, Sarah Olsen, Meg Olsen and Alex Olsen, Jeff Olsen and wife, Jayne
of Osage and their children, Josalyn Olsen, Jessica Olsen and Jaydon
Olsen, Jay Olsen and his wife, Sheila of Osage and their children, Amber

Helen L. Schmidt
January 22, 2003
Helen L. Schmidt, age 67,
of Moline, Illinois, died on Tuesday, January 14, 2003, at the Illini Hospital, Silvis, Illinois.
Memorial visitation was held on Saturday, January 18, at
the Schroder Mortuary,
Silvis, Illinois. There were no services and the body will be cremated.
Helen L. Schmidt, was born on July 27, 1935 in Rock
Island, Illinois, the daughter of John and Ruby Dunbar McChurch.. She married
Robert Schmidt in 1967 in Rock Island. Her hobbies included decorative
painting and she was a member of the Shades of Mississippi Painting
Club.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents.
Her survivors include her husband, Robert;
step-daughters, Pamela (Tony Apisa) Schmidt of Milan and Rebecca (Bill)
Dockery of Atoka, Tennessee; grandchildren, Jennifer and Allison; sister, Orba
Brees of Escondido, California; and brothers, John McChurch Sr. and Keith McChurch,
both of Las Vegas.

Becky Marie (Gruhn) Dockstader
January 22, 2003
Becky Marie (Gruhn) Dockstader,
73, of St. Ansgar, Iowa, died on Wednesday, January 15, 2003, at her
home in St. Ansgar.
Funeral services were held on Monday, January 20, at the Immanuel
Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar. The Reverend Byron Northwick officiated.
Burial was in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, St. Ansgar.
Becky "Beck" was born on January 15, 1930, to Fred
and Gertrude (Becker) Gruhn in Manning, Iowa. She graduated from the Spirit
Lake High School in 1947 and received her nursing degree from the Iowa
Lutheran School of Nursing in Des Moines. She went to work in Fort Dodge
for a time. Doc and Becky met on a blind date and it was a year before
he could catch up with her. They married on April 18, 1953, at the
Immanuel Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake. Following Doc's graduation
in 1955, they moved to New Orleans, then returned to St. Ansgar in August
of 1957.
Becky served on the school board and was an AEA member as well.
She was many a pets' friend and remembered their names more often than
their owners. She will be greatly missed and held close in the hearts of
her family as we celebrate her life as a love that will never die.
Becky was preceded in death by her husband, W.
Edson (Doc) Dockstader; one brother, Donald Gruhn; and one granddaughter,
Molly Schroeder.
She is survived by six daughters, Chris and her
husband, Larry Wadman of Annandale, Minnesota, Julie and her husband, Melvin
Schroeder of St. Ansgar, Mary and her husband, Al Sommerfeld of Derby,
Kansas, Holly and her husband, Rick Schwarck of St. Ansgar, Kelly and her
husband, Sean Shanahan of Hull, Massachusetts and Wendie Dockstader of Iowa City, Iowa;
two sons, Peter Dockstader and John and his wife, Lisa Dockstader, both of St. Ansgar; 15 grandchildren who were blessed with her
kindness and gentleness; two sisters, Dorthy and her husband, Darial
Detterman of Milford, Iowa and Marge Linquist of Lakewood, Colorado.

Luella R. (Newton) Hoisington

Luella R. (Newton)
Hoisington, age 86, of Osage, died on Saturday, January 18, 2003, at the
Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, Osage.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., on Wednesday, January 22,
at the First Baptist Church in Osage. The Rev. Roger Davis
officiated. Interment was in the Osage Cemetery.
Luella was born on February 22, 1916 in Osage, the
daughter of Roy and Arlie (Taylor) Fish. Luella was educated in the
Osage Schools and graduated from the Osage High School. She was united in
marriage to Howard Newton on January 1, 1939, in her parents' home near
Osage. They farmed southeast of Osage. Howard died in 1989. Luella was
united in marriage to Vernon Hoisington on May 31, 1992, at First Baptist
Church in Osage. Vernon died in 1996.
Luella was an active member of the First Baptist
Church, where she taught Sunday School, sang in the church choir and served
on various church boards. She enjoyed playing the piano, embroidering
and spending time with her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands,
Howard Newton and Vernon Hoisington; one brother, Donald Fish; one
grandson, John Bruggeman; and son-in-law, Albert Bruggeman, Jr.
Her survivors include two daughters, Karen Koethke
and husband, Allen of St. Ansgar and their children, James Bruggeman and
his children, Amanda and Samantha, Robin (Doug) Bless and their children,
Jonathon, Jacob and Jesse; Noreen Fink and her husband, Robert of Osage
and their children, Steve (Lori) Fink and their children, Alyssa, Caleb
and Kylee, David (Shirley) Fink and their children, Matthew, Aaron,
Andrew; step-daughter, Carol Decklever and husband, Dale of Osage; two
step-sons, Lee Hoisington of Orchard and Howard Hoisington and his wife,
Myrna of Orchard; one brother, Dean Fish of Aloha, Oregon; and many
step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

Jerry Dohler
January 29, 2003
Jerry Dohler, 91,
of St. Ansgar, died on Monday, January 20, 2003, at the St. Ansgar Good
Samaritan Center.
Memorial services were held on Friday, January 24, at the United Methodist
Church, St. Ansgar. The Reverend Jay Amundson officiated. Private
inurnment was in the St. Ansgar Cemetery.
Jerry Dohler, was born at Primghar, Iowa, on May 20,
1911 to William and Oriel Loveless Dohler. After graduating from the Omaha Technical High
School, he went to Rapid City, South Dakota. It was there that he married Grace
Shaffer on February 18, 1935. They lived on a ranch, raising cattle and
wheat until 1951, when they moved to the St. Ansgar area where Jerry was
engaged in welding and metal fabrication.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents;
brother; sister; and son-in-law.
His survivors include four children, Dora (Dick) Biederman of Osage, Royal
(Barbara) Dohler of St. Ansgar, Una
Bleess (John Gerdes) of Blue Earth, Minnesota and Sandra (Marvin) Hulshizer of
Georgetown, Texas; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and nieces and
nephews.

Malinda Augusta Bartz
January 29, 2003
Malinda Augusta Bartz, 87, died on Wednesday, January 22, 2003, at the Good Samaritan Center,
St. Ansgar, Iowa.
Funeral services
were held on Saturday, January 25, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church,
Grafton, Iowa. Rev. Wayne Ellingson officiated. Burial was in the Grafton
Cemetery.
Malinda Augusta Bartz, was born on December 1, 1915
in Grafton, to John and Emma (Glauwitz) Bork. She was baptized in
1916 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Grafton and also was confirmed on
March 29, 1931. Malinda married Harvey Bartz on June 27, 1932, at the
Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Grafton.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband,
Harvey on September 5, 1991; daughter, Karen in 1944; step-granddaughter,
Marie in 2002; six brothers, Edwin, John, Clarence, Arthur, Walter and
Roy; and six sisters, Laura Krueger, Myrtle Rappath, Esther Anderson, Verna
Schlotterback, Wilma Graffin and Ruth Dalluge.
Malinda's survivors include one son, Richard and
wife, Jean of Eau Galle, Wisconsin; four daughters, Bonnie Deal and husband, Virl
of Grafton, Betty Jordan and husband, Edwin of Grafton, Sharon Anderson
and husband, Allen of Northwood and Judy Hickman and husband, Russell of
Glendale, Arizona; 15 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 34
great-grandchildren; 15 step-great-grandchildren; three
great-great-grandchildren; 11 step-great-great-grandchildren; three
sisters, Irene Hartwig of Grafton, Elsie Kline of Grafton and Genevieve
Furness of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

David Kevin Dammen
February 5, 2003
David Kevin Dammen, 48, died on Tuesday, January 28, 2003, at the Mercy
Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
Funeral services were
held on Friday, January 31, at the Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage.
Reverend Dennis Hanson and Reverend Roy Ott officiated. Interment was in
the Osage Cemetery.
David Dammen, was born on August 15, 1954 in Osage,
the son of Karl and Connie (Berg) Dammen. He graduated from the Osage High
School in 1972 and attended Iowa State University for one year. He then
returned home to farm with his family, which is what he loved to do. David was united in marriage to Susan Bartz on
September 7, 1974 in Grafton.
For Dave the simple things in life were
what brought him pleasure. He loved fishing, especially trips to
Northern Minnesota and Canada. He loved spending time with his family,
friends and especially visiting his daughters. You could always find
David driving the back roads checking the crops.
He was preceded in death by his father, Karl G. Dammen; and sister, Betty Dammen.
David's survivors include three daughters, Nicole
Dammen and special friend, Joshua Clausen of Mason City, Helga Dammen and
Stephanie Dammen, both of Osage; mother, Connie Dammen of Osage; wife, Susan Dammen of Osage; sister, Mary Graeff and husband, Ron of Ottumwa and their
three children, Anna, Arun and Anu; two brothers, Darwin Dammen and his
wife, Carol of Lander, Wyoming and their two sons, Mike Dammen and wife, Lisa
and their two children, Hannah and Isabelle of Des Moines, Tony Dammen
and fiancée, Cherie of Lander, Wyoming; Dennis Dammen and wife, Julaine of
Prior Lake, Minnesota and their two children, Krista Anderson and husband, Todd
of Eden Prairie, Minnesota and Aaron Dammen of Plymouth, Minnesota.

Therese Halbach
February 5, 2003
Therese Halbach, age 42, of Stacyville, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday,
January 29, 2003, at her home.
Funeral services were held
on Saturday, February
1, at the Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville. Reverend Mark Reasoner officiated. Burial was in
the Visitation Cemetery, Stacyville.
Therese Halbach, was born on July 16, 1960 in Osage,
Iowa, to Lester and Ann (Runde) Durben. She graduated from the St. Ansgar High
School and then completed the Floriculture Program at Kirkwood Community
College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She worked at a flower shop in Grinnell, Iowa,
for three years. She married Ed Halbach on September 11, 1982 at the Sacred
Heart Catholic Church in Meyer, Iowa. Ed and Therese started Ed's Floral,
a retail and wholesale plant business in 1981. In 1986, they opened
another full service retail Flower Shop in LeRoy, Minnesota.
Therese was a
long-time board member of the St. Ansgar Dollars for Scholars. She was
respected in the community for countless volunteer hours at the nursing
home, fund raisers and civic events. She was active in the Visitation
Church Christian Mothers and kept the church beautiful with flowers. Her
floral-design talents touched many people's lives as did her smile,
kindness and compassion. Her personality was an expression of her
sincerity. Therese enjoyed gardening, reading, entertaining and visiting
with family and friends. She will be dearly missed by her many close
friends and family.
Preceding Therese in death were her paternal
grandparents, Arthur and Louise Durben; maternal grandparents, Theodore
and Pauline Runde; and father-in-law, Jerome Halbach.
She is survived by her husband, Ed of Stacyville,
Iowa; her parents, Ann and Lester Durben of Meyer, Iowa; three sisters, Sheila Durben of Meyer, Brenda Jensen
and her husband, Del and their two
children, Ami and Alex of Plymouth, Minnesota and Marlene Weis and her husband, Rob and
their three children, Brittany, Willie and Ben of Meyer. She was also
admired and loved by her mother-in-law, Monica Halbach of Stacyville;
three sisters-in-law, Jeanne Traaseth and her husband, Pete and daughter,
Leah of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, Angie Kruger and daughter, Stacey of St.
Ansgar and Paula Halbach of Minneapolis, Minnesota; two brothers-in-law, Joe Halbach
and his wife, Deb and their two daughters, Danielle and Jackie of
Coon Rapids, Minnesota and Mark Halbach and his wife, Teresa of Glenville, Minnesota.

William “Bill” Kuhn, formerly of Elma and
presently of Las Vegas, Nevada, died at his home in Las Vegas, Nevada,
on Friday, January 31, 2003, of a heart attack.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, February 5, at
the Our Lady of Las Vegas
Catholic Church, with a Mass celebrated by Father Richard Kuhn of
Peosta, Iowa and Father Robert Peckaweitz. Burial followed in the Palm Valley
Memorial Park, Las Vegas, Nevada.
William was
born on January 24, 1932 in Osage, Iowa, the son of Clarence and Millie Meirick
Kuhn. He was raised in Elma and graduated from the Immaculate Conception
High School in 1951. He served in the US Air Force. Upon discharge from
service in 1956, he married Catherine Melchionne. He was employed by
the DeLuca Coors Beer Distributorship for 20 years, serving as that
company’s general manager for many years. He then built the Magic Wand Truck
Stop also in Las Vegas, which he owned and operated until his recent
retirement.
William’s survivors include his wife, Catherine; sons, Cliff, Mark and
Paul; daughters, Lisa DeLong, Nadine Sekavec and Lynda Murphy, all of Las
Vegas; a brother, Joe of Port Aransas, Texas; sisters, Mary Ann Goings and
Carol Eckerman, both of Evansdale, Iowa, Helen Hites of Tacoma, Washington and
Dolores Allen of Littleton, Colorado; 18 grandchildren; and one
great-grandchild.
