Carol J. Bierbrodt

Nora Springs - Carol J. Bierbrodt, 69, of 715 Second St. N.W., Nora Springs, was called home to be with the Lord on Wednesday (Jan. 7, 2009.)
    Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday Jan. 13, 2009 at the Christian Church, 102 N. Hawkeye Ave., Nora Springs, with Pastor Glen Bandell officiating. Interment will be in Park Cemetery, Nora Springs.
    Visitation will be today from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, Nora Springs, and then one hour before the service at the church. Family suggests memorials be sent to Nora Springs Christian Church, American Heart Association or American Cancer Society.
    Carol was born on July 15, 1939, in Adrian, Minn. the daughter of John L. and Illa M. (Davey) Spoelstra. She graduated from Adrian High School in 1956. She then attended Kahler Methodist School of Nursing in Rochester.
She married Alfred Bierbrodt Sr. on March 2, 1958. They lived in the Nora Springs area where they raised their family. Carol enjoyed spending time with her family and always looked forward to family gatherings. Carol's faith was very important to her and she strived to set an example for her family.
Carol worked at the Nora Spring Care Center for over thirty-two years, while working she obtained her L.P.N. from North Iowa Area Community College.
She volunteered at Cardiac Rehab, Hospice of North Iowa and Nora Springs Care Center.
    Carol enjoyed driving and doing errands for the elderly. She was very active in her church, where she was an Elder, on the worship team and was a Sunday School teacher.
    Carol was a member of the Nora Springs Christian Church and the Mended Hearts.
    Carol is survived by her four children, Al Bierbrodt Jr. and his wife Jolene, Anamosa, Terry Bass and her husband Greg, Mason City, Susan Devenport, Osage and Peggy Toole and her husband Steve, Mason City; daughter-in-law Laurie Morgan, Osceola; seventeen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister Donna Schutt and the Rev. Larry, Seminole, Okla.; special niece Jan Vaage and her husband Mark, Mason City, and many other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Alfred Sr.; son Jim; grandson Dustin Hinders and a sister Dorothy Bartlett.

Kenton D. Ewing

MASON CITY - Kenton D. Ewing, 59, of Mason City, died Saturday (Jan. 10, 2009) at the VA Medical Center in Des Moines. He fought a short but brave battle with cancer.
    Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. Memorials may be directed to the Kenton Ewing memorial fund.
    Kenton was born on Dec. 23, 1949, in Rapid City, S.D., the son of Charles and Carole (Monahan) Ewing. He was a 1968 graduate of Mason City High School. He was very proud to have served his country in the United States Marine Corps. For many years he was an avid weight-lifter and the winner of many competitions. Kenton also enjoyed cooking, reading, watching professional racing, and was a life long Green Bay Packers fan.
    He is survived by his two daughters, Staci (John) Lloyd of Cresco and Brooke Ewing of Muscantine; one step- daughter, April (Dale) Schmitz of Clear Lake; his mother Carole (Tom) Pinneke of Mason City; his brothers, Gary Ewing of Mason City, Kim Pinneke of Cedar Rapids and Mick Pinneke of Atlanta, Ga.; his sisters, Molly (Stuart)Walgren of Cedar Falls, Annette Marshall of Mason City and Kathy (Craig) Wentworth of Omaha, Neb.; seven grandchildren; twelve nephews and nieces.
    He was preceded in death by his father Charles Ewing; his stepfather Charles "Tom" Pinneke; his brother William Figgins and his grandparents.

Mildred I. Groves

FOREST CITY - Mildred I. Groves, age 89, of Forest City, died Friday (Jan. 9, 2009) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
    Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with Pastor Rod Hopp and Pastor Barb Spaulding officiating. Inurnment will be in the spring at Oakland Cemetery in Forest City.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. at the church on Saturday, Jan. 17, and continue until the time of the service.
    Mildred was born on Sept. 6, 1919, the daughter of James Elmer and Regina (Sponem) Twito in Lake Mills. She was baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. She graduated from Lake Mills Hills High School in 1939. She was in the high school choir and had a beautiful singing voice.
    She married Orval Groves of Forest City on July 23, 1942, at the Lutheran parsonage in Las Vegas, Nev. They met at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake and enjoyed dancing there for many years.
    To this union four children were born; Marvo, DeAnna, Randy and Betty. Orval and Mildred lived and farmed in Mount Valley for many years, moving to their present address in Forest City in 1964.
    Mildred was a very giving person, always thinking of others. Her life revolved around her family. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Everyone loved going to Grandma's. She will be remembered for her lemon meringue pie and delicious cookies. She loved going on many trips with her family. She was a wonderful Mom and Grandma. She will be missed by her family and friends.
    Mildred is survived by her four children, Marvo Schmidt of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; DeAnna Parkison of Forest City, Randy (Jan) Groves of Forest City and Betty (Dave) Roenfanz of Ventura; grandchildren include Todd Schmidt and Josh Schmidt, of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Holly Eichmann and Matt Roenfanz of Garner, Jesse (Tiffany) Groves, Dallas Groves, Josh (Syreeta) Groves, all of Forest City and Edie (Dave) Hicks of Oregon.; great-grandchildren include, Kalley and Hailey Schmidt, Cassie and Zachary Eichmann, Blake, Rylea, Jayce and Logan Groves and one on the way.
    Also surviving is a brother, Don (Dominy) Twito of Lake Mills; brother-in-law Waldon Groves of LaCenter, Wash. and many special nieces and nephews.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Orval; sisters Bernice (Harold) Kjerland, Viola (Dale) Cooley, Myrtle (Bill) Lammers, Fern (Ed) Hegel and Marge Twito; brothers James, Irving, Earl (Ag), Royden and Harold Twito, and several nieces and nephews.

BRITT - Vera M. Hanson, 95, died Sunday (Jan. 11, 2009) at Westview Care Center in Britt.
    Funeral services for Vera Hanson will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, at Britt Evangelical Free Church in Britt with Pastor Stan Johnson officiating. Burial will take place at 2 p.m. in the Crystal Lake Cemetery in Crystal Lake.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, one hour prior to the services at the church.

Jean M. Heimendinger 

FOREST CITY - Jean M. Heimendinger, age 84, of Forest City, died Friday (Jan. 9, 2009) at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills.
    Funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Jan 14, 2009, at Bethel Lutheran Brethren Church in rural Joice, with Pastor Kevin Olson officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.
    Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St., Forest City on Tuesday, Jan. 13, and an hour prior to service at the church.
    Jean M. Heimendinger was born on a farm in rural Scarville on Oct. 12, 1924, the daughter of Carl and Jenny (Degnepold) Olson. She received her education in rural school near her home and graduated from Scarville High School.
    She married Gerald Heimendinger on Sept. 30, 1962, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple farmed northeast of Forest City for many years, with Jean an active partner in the operation. She was an excellent cook and very proud of her Norwegian heritage.
    The couple enjoyed taking short trips together and Jean liked raising flowers. She adored her grandchildren and treasured time spent with them.
    Gerald passed away in 1992 and since then Jean has made her home with her son David and his family. Failing health forced her to enter the Lake Mills Care Center in July of 2008. She died there on Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, at the age of 84 years.
    Jean is survived by her son David and his wife Mary Beth of Scarville; two beloved grandchildren, Adam and Zoe; a sister, Betsy Vaagen of Forest City and several nieces and nephews.
    She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Gerald and a brother Paul Olson.

Thomas L. "Tom" Hewitt

MASON CITY - Thomas "Tom" L. Hewitt, 39, of 902 N. Polk Ave., Mason City, died early Friday morning (Jan. 9, 2009) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.
    Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, January 13, 2009, at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City. Officiating will be the Rev. Jon Seda of Holy Family Catholic Church.
    Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m., today at the funeral home with a parish wake service at 7 p.m. Interment will be in Park Cemetery, Nora Springs.

    Thomas LeRoy Hewitt was born on Dec. 26, 1969, in Mason City, the son of Elmer and Rita (Mitchell) Hewitt. He graduated with the Class of 1989 from Mason City High School. During his school years, he achieved the rank of Life Scout in the Boy Scouts of America.
    He was engaged in privately moving refuse, metal and construction materials with his dad at Hewitt Hauling and later his own business, TC Hauling. Tom also operated Tom's Tattoo Shop, creating beautiful body artwork.
He and the love of his life, Christy Nelson, were united in marriage on Sept. 8, 1990, at St. Paul Lutheran Church and in June of 1994 they had their union blessed by the Catholic Church.
    Tom enjoyed celebrating with his family and friends. He was a constant provider of barbecued food. If the fire would stay lit he could be found all times of the year preparing anything you could cook on a grill. He was into heavy metal music and was the DJ for family and friends outings.
    He, along with his family members, were constant participants in Civil War re-enactments and he achieved the rank of First Sergeant with the 8th Texas re-enactment group. He always cherished his time with his son, Jesse, sharing time playing video games or tramping through the woods at Lime Creek Nature Center. Tom participated in martial arts and collecting bar memorabilia, which included bar signs and shot glasses.
    Throughout his debilitating illness, he kept his trust in Christy and his sense of humor with the rest of the family and friends.
    Those thankful in sharing in his life, are his wife Christy of 18 years; his 14 year old son Jesse; his mother Rita Hewitt, his brother Jerry and wife DeAnna Hewitt all of Mason City, and a whole host of nieces and nephews.
    His father, Elmer, preceded him in death.

Betty L. Wardrip

OSAGE - Betty L. Wardrip, age 78, of Osage, and formerly of Mason City, passed away Saturday (Jan. 10, 2009) at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage, after a courageous five-year battle with cancer.
    Funeral services will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with the Rev. Bruce Kaltwasser officiating. Burial will be at the Osage Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.
    Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa.
Betty was born on Nov. 29, 1930, at Winner, S.D. In 1949, she graduated from high school at Wall Lake.
    Betty and her husband Clyde operated Mason City Furniture and Clyde's Furniture Mart, along with Betty owning and operating Merle Norman Cosmetic Studio in Mason City for many years. In 1973, they moved to California and had a furniture store in Fallbrook, Calif., until retiring in 1983. Betty moved back to North Iowa in the mid-1990s. She lived at the Evergreen Apartments and then Apple Valley Assisted Living for the last few months of her life.
    Betty was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Osage.
    She loved to quilt, knit, paint, and read.
    Betty is survived by her children, Steve (Jean) Wardrip of Baxter, Minn., and Jacque (Al) Brandau of Floyd; grandchildren, Adam (Candice) Wardrip of Shoreview, Minn., Wendy (Dan) Waters of Plymouth and Bridget (Eric) Arthur of Mason City; twin great-granddaughters, Emme and Evah Wardrip; and great-grandchildren, Coleman and Kenzie Waters.
    She was preceded in death by her husband Clyde Wardrip in 1981.

Vera M. Hanson

BRITT - Vera M. Hanson, 95, of Britt was called home to be with the Lord on Sunday (Jan. 11, 2009) at Westview Care Center in Britt.

    Vera Hanson, the daughter of Peter and Annie (Larson) Hanson, was born on July 10, 1913 on the family farm in Crystal Township. She attended school in the area, graduating from Crystal Lake High School. After graduating, Vera attended college at Waldorf, Iowa State Teacher's College (University of Northern Iowa), and the University of Colorado where she received her master's degree in education.
    Vera taught in several schools in Iowa: Crystal Township No. 9, Maxwell, Davenport and Mason City. She also taught in schools in Illinois: Elmhurst and Rockford.
    Vera was a member of the First Evangelical Free Church in Rockford, Ill. where she was active in many organizations; WMS, Pioneer Girl Leader, Branch Church "Chapelwood" and as a Sunday School teacher. Vera was very happy whenever she could have her Sunday School class over for gatherings and parties at her home.
    Vera is survived by her sister, Evelyn Dallman of Britt, along with several nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
    She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Annie Hanson; two brothers, Hilton and Herbert Hanson; a foster sister Florence and a foster brother Orrin.
    Vera's family suggests memorials to the Britt Evangelical Free Church.

Hjalmar Peter "H.P." Krogh

IOWA FALLS - Hjalmar Peter "H.P." Krogh, age 83, of Iowa Falls, died on Monday (Jan. 12, 2009) at the Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls.
    Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls with burial in the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls, at a later date.
    Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m., Friday at the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. A memorial fund has been established.
    "H.P." Krogh was born on Dec. 9, 1925, in Coulter, the son of Peter A. and Katherine (Bonde) Krogh. He graduated from the Hampton High School in 1943, Grandview College in 1948, and Iowa State University in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944-46. H.P. was united in marriage to Ilene Dohrmann on Feb. 8, 1948 in Latimer. He owned Krogh Feed and Supply, retiring in 1998. H.P. was a member of the First United Methodist Church, was a Sunday School teacher and church board member. He was a member of the Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post No. 188 of Iowa Falls and the Order of the Arrow. He was involved in ag organizations before he retired.
    He is survived by his wife, Ilene; three sons, Dr. Steven Krogh (Kerry) of Mason City, David Krogh of Iowa Falls, and Scott Krogh (Deana) of Iowa Falls; two daughters, Suzanne Dahl (Vinje) of Sabula and Janet Deaver (David) of Cedar Falls; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

    Mary Ellen Totten was born on April 29, 1924, at Mason City, a daughter of J. Frank and Ellen (Rodewald) Hayes.
    She was a 1942 graduate of Mason City High School. She was a former national medalist in solo vocal music competition, in 1941. Mary Ellen attended Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls and Chicago Musical College, Chicago, Ill.
    She was married to Arthur R. "Bud" Totten on Feb. 7, 1945, in Mason City. To this union two daughters were born, Mary DeLaine and Debra Kay.
    She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City.
    Mary Ellen is survived by her daughter, Debra Kay Ryan and her husband Thomas, Mason City; granddaughter, Tara Ryan, Lake Mills; grandson, Matthew Ryan, Mason City; and a special friend, Bud Burgess, Mason City.
    She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Arthur R. Totten; daughter, Mary DeLaine Daugherty and brother John Francis "Jack" Hayes.

MASON CITY - Rodney L. "Rod" Wade, 70, of Nine Stony Way, died Saturday (Jan. 10, 2009) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.
    Celebration of life services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E. with Pastor Paul C. Nelson and Pastor Jeni Bohls officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
    Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and continue at the church one hour before services. Memorials may be given to St. James Lutheran Church or Hospice of North Iowa.
    Rod was born on June 12, 1938, in Mason City, the son of Floyd E. and Esther M. (Matthews) Wade. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1956, attended Mason City Junior College, Kilgore College in Kilgore, Texas, and the University of Iowa, Iowa City. Rod was united in marriage to Darlene M. Thompson, Aug. 12, 1961, at St. James Lutheran Church. He worked for Marshall and Swift as a route driver for several years before going to work for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company for 22 years, where he worked in several positions. At the breakup of the Bell system in 1984, Rod was transferred to AT&T. He worked for AT&T for three years before starting his own company, North Iowa Communications. He retired in 2001. He was a very active volunteer throughout the years for various organizations. Rod became a child of God through Holy Baptism on Oct. 2, 1938 and confirmed his faith in Jesus as his Lord and Savior on March 18, 1951, at the First Presbyterian Church, Mason City. Rod was a long time active member of St. James Lutheran Church.
    Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Darlene; three sons, Jon Wade and wife Kris of Katy, Texas, Jim Wade and wife Cindy of Decatur, Ga., and Jeff Wade and wife Celeste of Goliad, Texas; five grandchildren, Michael Wade, USMC, Julia, Isabella and Emma Wade of Goliad, Texas, and Luke Wade of Katy, Texas; brother, Bob and wife Norma of Columbia, Mo.; two sisters-in-law, Irene Thompson of Clear Lake, and Deloris Schroeder of Apache Junction, Ariz., and special nieces and nephews.
    Rod was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Esther Wade.

NEW HAMPTON - Cornelius Henry Betten (Kerny) died Friday (Jan. 9, 2009) at Mesa, Ariz., with his family by his side.
    A memorial service was held on Sunday, Jan 11, at The Resort, Mesa, Ariz., where Kerny and JoAnn have spent the last 21 winters. Kerny was an eye, organ and tissue donor and participated in Life Legacy from the Donor Network.
    Kerny Betten was born Aug. 13, 1926, at Britt. Kerny married JoAnn Larson on Feb. 25, 1948, at Kanawha. Kerny and JoAnn purchased a farm in Jacksonville township at New Hampton in 1958.
    Preceding him death were Kerny's parents, Henry and Elsie Betten of Kanawha; brother, John Betten of Kanawha; sister, Elsie (Betten) Eliason of Kanawha; and grandson, Jermiah Dosser of Osage.
    Surviving Kerny are his wife, JoAnn (Larson) Betten of New Hampton; son, Roger (Anna) Betten of Grand Terrace, Calif.; son, Doug (Trish) Betten of Bainbridge Island, Wash.; and daughter, Jody (Rick) Dosser of Osage; grandchildren, Amanda Betten, Brenda Betten, Nick (Jody) Betten and Renae Betten all from Grand Terrace, Calif.; Rodney Betten from Bainbridge Island, Wash., and Shelley (Doug) Sedgwick from Waverly; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Betten from Grand Terrace, Calif., Sophie Sedgwick and Ian Sedgwick from Waverly; sister, Lela Freesemann from Britt; plus many nieces and nephews.

Carroll Lashbrook

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Memorial services for Carroll Lashbrook, 80, of Lawrence, will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Rumsey-Yosr Funeral Home. Burial will be at a later date.
    Carroll Lashbrook died Tuesday (Jan. 13, 2009) at his home from complications of pulmonary fibrosis.
    He was born July 20, 1928, in Algona, the third son of Jess and Katherine Burtis Lashbrook. He graduated from Algona high school and later attended Business College.
    Mr. Lashbrook served in the Navy for eight years and was discharged as a first class aviation electrician in 1955. He then worked as a salesman for Builder's Supply of Mason City until his retirement in 1986.
    He enjoyed golf, watching all sports, his friends, and spending time with his family.
    He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 14, the VFW and the Eagles Lodge in Lawrence.
    He was preceded in death by his first wife, Louise Presthus Lashbrook, in February 1983; daughter, Debra Lashbrook Angell; sister, Fae Lashbrook Bode; and his parents.
    He married Katie Larsen Grimmond on Sept. 1, 1984. She survives of the home. Other survivors include three sons, Dain, of Wichita, Kan., Michael and wife, Julie, of Mason City, Mark and wife, Lisa, of Kansas City, Kan.; three brothers, Harlan and wife, Lois, of Claremont, Calif., Robert and wife, Maxine, of Emmetsburg, Del Lashbrook and wife, Lucille, of Tigard, Ore.; step-daughters, Jeanie Strong and husband, Michael, of Monterey Valley, Calif., Mary Lee Kreger and husband, Tom, of Kenai, Alaska, Carol Ramaekers and husband, Marty, of Mason City; and Elizabeth Grimmond and her companion, Carl Allenbaum, of Yellowstone, Wyo.; his 17 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
    Family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. before services on Saturday.

CHARLES CITY - Betty Jeanne Marth, 85, of Charles City died peacefully surrounded by family on Monday (Jan. 12, 2009) at Cedar Health in Charles City.
    A funeral Mass for Betty Marth will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City with the Rev. Carl Ries celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City.
    Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main in Charles City, with a rosary to be recited by the Lay Carmelites at 4 p.m. and a vigil scriptural wake service at 6 p.m. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the Mass Friday at the church.
    Betty Jeanne Smith Marth was born Aug. 11, 1923, at Colwell, the daughter of Leo Bernard and Minnie (Herzog) Smith. She attended grade school in Colwell and graduated from the Charles City High School in 1940.
    On Jan. 1, 1944, she was united in marriage to Kenneth E. Marth at Immaculate Conception Rectory in Charles City. Betty was employed at Salsbury Laboratories Inc. for 40 years.
    Betty was a dedicated life-long member of Immaculate Conception Church, where she was president of the Rosary Society for many years, a member of St. Theresa's Circle and had been a Lay Carmelite since 1961.
    She belonged to the Senior Citizen's and her dream of teaching children was fulfilled as a foster grandparent for Charles City Schools. Betty held a special devotion to the Blessed Mother Mary and St. Theresa. She was a generous person who touched many lives with her caring and deep faith. Betty sang in the church choir and at nursing homes, where she was a frequent visitor. To know her was to love her.
    Betty is survived by her three children, Jeanne Marth of La Crosse, Wis., Ronald Marth of Sea Tac, Wash., and Richard Marth of Ripon, Calif.; granddaughter, Sherry (Mario) Franco; six great-grandchildren, Brittany, Mylene, Destinee, Breanna, Justice and Aliczander; two sisters, Sharon (Allen) Davidson of Charles City and Jan Pull of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and a brother, Robert Smith of Osage. Betty was very dear to many including several nieces, nephews and a special friend of the family, Millie Weipert.
    She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two sisters, Roberta Pelleymounter and Bernadette Doore.
    In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Immaculate Conception Lay Carmelites or the Rosary Society.

GARNER - Francis J. Rayhons, 74, of Garner died Sunday (Jan. 11, 2009) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

    Francis John Rayhons, the son of Henry and Agnes (Kopacek) Rayhons, was born May 16, 1934, on the family farm northwest of Garner. He attended country school near his home and graduated from Garner High School in 1950. Francis continued his education at Iowa State University in Ames for a short time before moving back home to help on the farm. On Jan. 25, 1955, he married Lois J. Helps at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan. They made their home on a farm northwest of Garner where they raised their eight children and farmed. Francis also milked cows for 37 years, raised feeder cattle and was a seed dealer for Hawkeye Seed Co. and Prairie Brand Seeds for a number of years.
    He enjoyed attending his grandchildren's activities, watching local sporting events, polka music and was an avid Iowa State fan.
    He was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church where he served as a lector and eucharistic minister, Catholic Workman FCSLA Branch W51, Farm Bureau and was a lifelong blood donor.
    Francis is survived by his wife, Lois, of Garner; eight children, Steven Rayhons of Mesa, Ariz., Julie (Earl) Beshey of Garner, Susan (Tim) Speers of Storm Lake, David Rayhons of Garner, Gregory (Sandy) Rayhons of Garner, Jerome (Tracey) Rayhons of Altoona, Lisa (Dana) Sindelar of Indianapolis, Ind., and Laurie (Kevin) Merryman of Maxwell; grandchildren, J.W. (Tiffany) Rayhons and their two children, Chase and Michayla, Preston and Blake Rayhons, Eric, Evan and Nicole Beshey, Jeff and Matt Speers, Alesha, Brianna and Trevor Rayhons, Shannon and Mariah Rayhons and Carter, Rylee and Haylee Merryman; siblings, Henry V. Roberta Jean Swanson

MASON CITY - Roberta Jean Swanson, 81, of Mason City died Monday (Jan. 12, 2009) after fighting a lengthy illness in Mason City.
    A memorial service for Roberta will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Steve Palo of Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City, officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time on Friday at the chapel.
    Roberta Jean Swanson was born July 1, 1927, in Mason City, the daughter of Robert and Theda (Ross) Read. She attended and received her education in the Mason City Community Schools. In her early years Roberta worked at Mode-O-Day in Mason City.
    In her earlier years she also enjoyed roller-skating and dancing with her friends at the Surf in Clear Lake. Roberta best enjoyed being a stay-at-home mother, raising and loving her family.
    She was united in marriage to Kenneth W. Swanson in 1963; he preceded her in death in 1978.
    Roberta enjoyed sewing, embroidering, reading, arts and crafts, making Christmas ornaments, gardening, animals, and shopping and having lunch with her children.
    Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Sue (Fred) Barlow of Mason City, Kris (Bill) Vogelgesang of Owatonna, Minn., Michael Swanson of Clear Lake, and Kim Swanson and her fianc�, Keith Kock, of Mason City; her grandchildren, John (Laurie) Barlow of Mason City, Pamela (Thomas) Litterer of Charles City, and Sara Swanson of Des Moines, her great-grandchildren, Sean and Tiffany Barlow of Mason City, Alexandria and Olivia Litterer of Charles City; two nieces, Gerry Rae (Tom) Oliver of Olathe, Kan., and Rita (Wayne) Robertson of Rose Creek, Minn.; two nephews, Ronnie (Gwen) Nedved of Britt and Steve (Cathy) Nedved of Garner; and her special dog, Hoku; as well as other extended family members and friends.
    Roberta was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Kenneth; and three sisters, Gail Grant, Betty Nedved and Doris Davis.

    Harriet enjoyed sewing, camping, cooking, crafts and spending time with her grandchildren. She and Bill were actively involved in the Knights of Columbus, and Harriet was a Catholic Daughters of the Americas, and a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
    She is survived by her daughter, Alice (Selvin) Tejeda of Maricopa, Ariz.; her grandchildren, Adam, Nathan and Alex Tejeda of Maricopa, Ariz.; her sisters, Charlotte (Ron) Fiser of Charles City and Geraldine Hammond, Spokane, Wash.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
    Harriet was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter Madonna, and granddaughter, Veronica.

Ila Knapp

GREENE - Ila Knapp, 94, of 508 N. Jackson St., Greene, died Wednesday (Jan. 14, 2009) at the Liebe Care Center, Greene.
    A funeral Mass is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19, St. Mary's Catholic Church, Greene, with Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery in Greene.
    Visitation has not been scheduled as of this time.

Clara H. Ones

OSAGE - Clara H. Ones, 90, of Osage, passed away Tuesday (Jan. 13, 2009) at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.
    Clara Augusta Helena Kroneman was born to Emil and Maria (Neuman) Kroneman on Aug. 19, 1918, in Rock Township, Mitchell County.
    She was baptized Sept. 8, 1918, by Pastor W. Reinecke at St. John's Lutheran Church, Rock Township. She was instructed in the Lutheran faith by Pastor C.J. Kumpf at St. John's Lutheran Church and was confirmed on March 20, 1932.
    Clara received her elementary education at Rock No. 6 rural school. She was active in her church, teaching Sunday School and singing in the choir.
    On Nov. 20, 1949, Clara was united in marriage to Justin Ones at St. John's Lutheran by Pastor Fred Ide. They were blessed with two sons, Jerry and Laird. After her marriage, she became a member of Rock Creek Lutheran Church in Meroa, where she was active in church women's organizations and Lutheran World Relief projects. Clara loved crafts, gardening, flowers and doing woodworking projects with Justin.
    Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church, 3269 Foothill Ave., Osage, with the Rev. R. Dawson Tornes officiating. Burial will be in the Rock Creek Cemetery.
    Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage and will continue one hour before services at the church.
    Survivors include her son, Laird Ones of Osage; three grandchildren: Angie Ones and friend, Daniel Mortensen, of Frederic, Wis., Jessica Tollander and husband, Ryan, of Siren, Wis., Jeremy Ones and wife, Renee, of Frederic, Wis.; seven great-grandchildren: Jaryd and Jori Braden, Macy, Morgan and Kylie Tollander, and Benjamin and Lydia Ones; two brothers: Lloyd Kroneman of Grafton, Glen Kroneman and wife, Delores, of Carpenter; and sisters-in-law, Twila Kroneman of Osage and Betty Kroneman of St. Ansgar.
    She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Justin Ones; her son, Jerry Ones; three sisters, Laura Wilde, Myrtle Miller and Grace Tabbert; and three brothers, Alvin Kroneman, George Kroneman and Rueben Kroneman.

Gary R. Sandifer

THOR - Gary R. Sandifer, 52, of Thor died Sunday (Jan. 4, 2009) at his home in Thor.
    Funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Forest City with Pastor Doug Farrell officiating. Burial will be at Brush Point Cemetery in rural Fertile.
    Visitation will be held one hour prior to service at the church.
    Gary R. Sandifer was born in Jackson, Miss., on March 10, 1956, the son of Ray and Dolores (Jordan) Sandifer.
    The family moved to Fertile in 1964. Gary received his education in Fertile schools and graduated from Forest City High School in 1974. He furthered his education at the Grand Rapids Baptist Bible College in Grand Rapids, Mich. He then attended Hamilton Business College and received his degree in business.
    Gary worked as office manager for ADF Manufacturing in Humboldt. Iowa.
    He enjoyed "hobby" carpentry and had been remodeling his home. He liked to read and treasured time spent with his family.
    Gary is survived by his parents, Ray and Dolores Sandifer of Fertile; a brother and his wife, Rick and Kathy Sandifer of Hopatcong, N.J., and their children, Kelly and Kristen. Also surviving are several uncles and aunts.
    Gary was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents.

Luella M. Stirm

NASHUA - Luella M. Stirm, 83, of Nashua died Monday afternoon (Jan. 12, 2009) at the Eleventh Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.
    Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 16, at St. John's United Church of Christ, Pleasant Hill, rural Nashua. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in rural Nashua.
    Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

    Luella Magdalene Stirm was born Aug. 12, 1925, on the family farm in Butler County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Frederick and Amelia (Litterer) Hauser. Luella attended rural school at Fremont No. 8 in Butler County and graduated from Nashua High School in 1944. She earned her teaching degree at Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls.
    She was united in marriage to Edward C. Stirm on May 23, 1948, at St. John's United Church of Christ, Pleasant Hill, rural Nashua. They resided and farmed various farms in Butler and Butler counties. Luella taught rural schools for 10 years. They owned and operated two vacation resorts in Canada for 18 years and later owned the Pinicon Restaurant in New Hampton for four years.
    In 1968, Ed and Luella built a new home on their farm southwest of Nashua where they lived until Ed's death in 1997. Luella moved to Nashua and in 1999 became a resident at the Eleventh Street Chautauqua Guest Home. Luella was a life-long member of St. John's United Church of Christ and was a member of the church choir.
     Luella is survived by her children, Mark Stirm and Connie Thompson, both of Nashua; two brothers, Eldon (Evelyn) Hauser of Clarksville and Paul (Joyce) Hauser of Hampton; one sister, Helen Stille of Nashua; one sister-in-law, Edna Hauser (Art) Kohls.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward on June 25, 1997; her parents; two brothers, Leonard and Theophil Hauser; a son-in-law, Eric Thompson; and a brother-in-law, Paul Stille.
