Almine A. Grosland

KENSETT — Almine A. Grosland, 92, of Sheffield, formerly of Kensett, died Monday (Jan. 3, 2005) at Sheffield Care Center in Sheffield.

Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 8, 2005) at Bethany Lutheran Church, 600 Fifth St. in Kensett, with the Rev. Clarence Baalson officiating. Burial will be in the Kensett Cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to funeral service at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the Almine A. Grosland Memorial Fund.

Almine A. Grosland was born in Sexton, Iowa, on Feb. 10, 1912, the daughter of Carl and Johanna (Bey) Petersen. She was one of 10 children.

Almine was united in marriage to Albert Doyscher, to this union three children were born.

In 1934, Albert died, which left her to find work in Chicago to support their three children.

She married Henry Sorensen in 1938 and made her home in Coulter, where she started her career with the United States Postal Service.

Following Henry's death, Almine returned to Kensett where she later married Marvin Grosland. To this union a son was born.

She began working for the United States Postal Service in Kensett for many years.

She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Kensett where she was a very active member.

Almine was an active senior citizen where she was distinguished as a senior volunteer.

After some health issues, Almine made her home at the Sheffield Care Center.

Almine loved gardening, crocheting, and quilting. She was quite the fisherwoman, enjoying canning pickled herring along with everything else in sight. Her greatest love was spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by her daughters, Marjorie (Duane) Foss, of Hampton, and Dorothy (Vale) Peter, of Roland; grandchildren, Diane Foss (Michael Miller), of Des Moines, Darsi Foss (Matt Speer), of Madison, Wis., Craig (Dawn) Peter, of Omaha, Neb., Valerie Peter, of Ankeny, Steve Imerman, Greg Imerman, Mark Imerman, Eric Imerman, Brick Imerman, Vicky Imerman, Michelle Fleet, Monica Hamilton, Melody Grosland, and several great- grandchildren; sister, Marie Ellingson, of Garner; a special friend, Joyce Peter, along with several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Albert Doyscher in 1934, Henry Sorensen, and Marvin Grosland in 1994, daughter Helen Imerman; son, Ensign Jon Grosland in 1986.

CEDAR RAPIDS — Gayle Arickx Mogren, 79, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Floyd, died Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2005) at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids.

A funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. The Rev. Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Osage.

Friends may call at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday. A vigil scriptural wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the Mass.

Irene Rodenbeck


ROCKFORD — Funeral services for Irene A. Rodenbeck, 90, formerly of Rockford and Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene where there will be a public Scripture service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before services at the church.

Irene Arletta Kock was born Sept. 30, 1914, in rural Coldwater Township, Butler County, a daughter of Charles August Leo and Ada Elizabeth (Smith) Kock, and died Monday (Jan. 3, 2005) at Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

She was baptized on Oct. 10, 1915, and was confirmed May 19, 1929, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene. She received her education in the Bristow and Greene public schools.

She was united in marriage to Alfred H. Rodenbeck on Nov. 22, 1936, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene.

They farmed west of Greene for six years and later farmed south of Greene. In 1962, when they moved into their new home in Greene.

Several years later, they returned to their farm where they remained until moving to Allison.

In 1992, they moved to Rockford until they both entered the nursing home on Jan. 31, 1997. For 28 years they spent their winters in Brownsville, Texas. They celebrated their 60th anniversary shortly before his death on April 15, 1997.

Irene worked with her husband on the farm. She was a kind and caring person and a very good housekeeper.

Living family members include her brother, Sylvan (Thelma) Kock of Rockford; and 17 nieces and nephews.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and two sisters, Ila Ruth in infancy, and Phyllis Brandau in 1995.

CHARLES CITY — Iva Smith, 87, of Charles City, died Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2005) at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Iva Smith will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The Rev. Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

LuVERNE — Robert H. Ramus, 41, of LuVerne died Friday (Dec. 24, 2004) at his home in LuVerne.

Jean VanDenBosch


FERTILE — Jean VanDenBosch, 79, died Tuesday (Dec. 7, 2004) at the Hospice of North Iowa Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A celebration service in honor of Jean's life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Christ, 3493 Eagle Ave. in Fertile, with Pastor Curt Gallmeyer presiding. A private inurnment will be held at a later date at Grant Township Cemetery, rural Fertile.

Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the service.

Memorials may be given to Fertile Church of Christ or Hospice of North Iowa.

Jean Ouverson was born Jan. 30, 1925, to Harley and Edith (Humphrey) Ouverson of Fertile.

After graduation from Fertile High School, Jean pursued her interest in aviation obtaining her commercial pilot's license. She continued training for a period of time at the Aviation Academy in Kansas City, Mo., before returning to Fertile.

Those living in North Iowa in those days still speak of the times Jean was heard and seen soaring above their communities in her Piper Cub.

She married Wayne "Butch" VanDenBosch on April 19, 1947, at the Church of Christ in Fertile, Iowa. To this union four sons were born. After many years, the marriage ended in divorce.

To further her education in later years, Jean completed requirements for her associates degree in liberal arts.

She worked as the bookkeeper for the family-owned business of Fertile Valley Hatchery for more than 30 years, as well as assisting in the overseeing of the general operation.

In more recent years, she was the bookkeeper for The Petal Shoppe in Clear Lake, Iowa' until her retirement in the late '90s.

During Jean's declining health in recent years she had enjoyed the fellowship and assistance of many of the community members of Fertile who had so willingly helped meet her needs. Of special pleasure to her was the morning coffee group at the Downtown Cafe.

During more active years, she enjoyed gardening, music, reading and cooking; however, she will be foremost remembered for her devout Christian faith.

She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ in Fertile where she served for many years in various capacities including Sunday school teacher, superintendent of Christian education, Christian women's organization, choir member and marimba soloist.

She is survived by her four sons, Bob (Toby) of Mason City, Mike (Karen) of Iowa City, Tom and Scott (Kelly) all of Strawberry, Ariz.; seven granddaughters; two grandsons; and one brother, Bob (Betty) of Fertile.

Family members in heaven welcoming her home for Christmas are her parents; and grandson, Benjamin VanDenBosch.

MASON CITY — Dorothy Ann Popp, 74, of 329 21st St., S.W., Mason City, died Tuesday (Jan. 4, 2005) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St., N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Nick Knoth officiating. Inurnment will be in the spring at a later date in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton.

Elizabeth M. Foldesi

MASON CITY — Elizabeth Mary (Brandeker) Foldesi, 94, a 56-year resident of Mason City, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday (Jan. 2, 2005) at Fountain West Health Care Center in West Des Moines.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave. in Mason City, with Monsignor Joseph Slepicka, a long-time family friend, officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Mason City.

Elizabeth was born Dec. 16, 1910, in the tiny village of Klucarky in the Trans-Carpathian Mountain region of Europe. At that time, this land was part of the sprawling Austro-Hungarian Empire that encompassed most of Central and Eastern Europe; now it is in the extreme southwestern portion of Ukraine.

Elizabeth's father was a railroad conductor and she traveled with him from border to border of the empire, learning seven different languages and experiencing dozens of ethnic cultures.

She had a brief marriage in Europe to her childhood sweetheart, which ended with his death in early 1928.

Elizabeth married Charles Michael Foldesi in Europe on Sept. 17, 1929, at the advent of World War II.

The couple emigrated to the U.S. six months later, originally living in Ohio and then relocating to several places in Iowa, beginning with a Rockford farm, before moving to Mason City in 1934.

In 1939, the family settled permanently at 13 6th St. N.E. Charles died in March 1976, and Elizabeth lived alone until May 2000, when she moved to the Des Moines area to make her home with her daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Starr Leitch.

Elizabeth was a lifelong homemaker and a devoted member of Holy Family Catholic Church, where she belonged to St. Vincent's Circle.

She was well-known locally for her bountiful vegetable gardens and for her cooking skills, especially her German and Hungarian specialty meals as well as a variety of European-style baked goods. She took immense pleasure in the companionship of many friends, and her greatest joy in life was her family.

Surviving family members include four daughters and two sons-in-law, Dr. Barbara K. Petersen of Tampa, Fla., Margaret Therese and Starr W. Leitch of Clive, Iowa, Mary Elizabeth and Edward J. McEvilly of Sun City West, Ariz., and Veronica Ann Gatens of Green Bay, Wis.; as well as 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Elizabeth (Fechtel) Brandeker; three infant siblings; her first husband, Anthony Sper; her second husband, Charles M. Foldesi; an infant daughter, Theresa Magdalene Foldesi; her son, Karl Joseph Foldesi; and two sons-in-law, O. Keith Petersen and Melvin J. Gatens.

MASON CITY — Beverly J. Olson, 71, of Mason City, died Tuesday (Jan. 4, 2005) at Good Shepherd Health Center.

Leroy F. ‘Slim' Smith


MASON CITY — Leroy F. "Slim" Smith, 83, of 748 17th St. N.E., died Monday (Jan. 3, 2005) at Willow Pointe Assisted Living.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Jim Stiles of First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home.

Leroy was born May 5, 1921, in rural Bradford, Iowa, the son of Franklin C. and Gertie B. (Smith) Smith. He graduated from West Fork No. 5. Leroy moved to Mason City in 1945.

He married Betty L. Pusch Dec. 12, 1954. Leroy worked as an automobile mechanic for Zenor Motors and Blinder Olds Honda for 40 years. He retired in 1985.

Leroy was a member of First United Methodist Church, a 50-year member of Highland Golf Course and enjoyed bowling for more than 40 years.

Leroy is survived by a special friend, Bernice I. Carmody, of Mason City; stepchildren, Mary Borrill and husband, Ken, of Clear Lake, Sharon Carmody of Mason City, Denny Carmody and wife, Mary, of Clear Lake, Pastor Mike Carmody and wife, Janis, of Fort Dodge; sister-in-law, Ednabelle Smith of Sheffield; and several nieces and nephews.

Leroy's parents; wife, Betty; brothers, Howard, Walter and Boyd; sisters, Margaret, Phyllis and Genevieve preceded him in death.

Patricia ‘Pat' A. McGowan

CLEAR LAKE — Patricia "Pat" A. McGowan, 80, 1105 Fifth Ave S. in Clear Lake, died Monday (Jan. 3, 2005) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 1001 Eighth Ave S. in Clear Lake, with Monsignor Robert Hogan officiating. Interment will be held at the Clear Lake Cemetery in Clear Lake.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with a Scripture Wake service at 6 p.m.

Memorials may be given to the Patricia A. McGowan Memorial Fund.

Pat was born March 1, 1924, in Mitchell, S.D., the daughter of E.W. and Clara (Balrud) Justin. She graduated from Mason City High School and Mason City Junior College.

Pat married Raymond McGowan on June 21, 1944, and they lived at Clear Lake. She worked for the Welcome Wagon in Clear Lake and was a paraprofessional for Mason City High School.

Pat enjoyed playing cribbage and fishing with her husband and playing bridge with the girls. She loved to play golf at All Vets and always told people that she was "going to her office."

Pat thoroughly enjoyed watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow up.

She enjoyed many weekends in the fall sharing the weekend with the duckhunters, Mike and Patrick. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Clear Lake.

Pat is survived by two children, Michael McGowan and his wife, Pamela, of Edina, Minn., and Kathy Olson and her husband, Lance, of Spirit Lake; five grandchildren, Daniel McGowan, of Anchorage, Alaska, Peter McGowan and his wife Misty, of Minneapolis, Minn., Patrick McGowan, of Pequot Lakes, Minn., Lisa Vander Woude and her husband Rick, of Spirit Lake, and Brent Olson, of Spirit Lake; three great-grandchildren, Corri, Ryker and Jossi Vander Woude; one sister, Elizabeth Siesseger, of Muscatine; and one brother, Robert Justin, of Davenport.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband Raymond on Oct. 15, 1991.

Funeral services are tentatively scheduled Sunday, at the Belmond United Methodist Church, with visitation on Saturday at the Andrews Funeral Home in Belmond.

Linda N. Diekhuis


BELMOND — Linda N. Diekhuis, 47, of rural Belmond, died unexpectedly Tuesday (Jan. 4, 2005) at the Belmond Medical Center, of complications related to diabetes.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, with the Rev. Rod Hopp officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First St. S.E. in Belmond and continue one hour prior to the services on Saturday at church.

The family suggests memorials may be given to Linda's family in her name or to the donor's choice.

Linda Nadine Bendickson, was born Feb. 28, 1957 in Lake Mills, Iowa, the daughter of Marvin and Viola (Brakke) Bendickson. She attended and graduated from Lake Mills High School, Lake Mills, Iowa.

She was united in marriage to Delos Diekhuis, on June 21, 1980, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond. The couple were blessed with two children, Brandon and Stacy.

Linda had been employed at the Belmond Health Care Center for 25 years, much of her years there was as a certified nursing assistant.

She was a dedicated and hard worker at the facility who loved working with her co-workers and the residents at the care center.

Linda looked forward to the various holidays throughout the years and keeping up with the daily soaps, especially her favorite, "General Hospital."

Linda received great joy and pride from her husband, children, and family.

For most her of life she had valiantly fought battle with diabetes and, in later years, the onset of rheumatoid arthritis.

Those left to cherish her memory include her mother, Viola Bendickson, of Lake Mills; her husband of nearly 25 years, Delos Diekhuis, of Belmond and their two children Brandon and Stacy Diekhuis; sisters, Laurie McDonald, of Lake Mills, and Marsha and her husband Randy Mincer, of Arkansas; a brother, Steve Bendickson, of Lake Mills; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Marvin Bendickson.

Wencil Dean Small


REMBRANDT — Wencil Dean Small passed from this earth on Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2005). Wencil was critically injured in a farm accident on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, and died as a result of those injuries. He died doing what he loved best.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church at Rembrandt. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m.

Wencil Dean Small was born to Charles and Blanche (Zupp) Small on May 22, 1923 at Washta.

He graduated from Washta High School and began his lifelong farming career following graduation.

He farmed with his father until his marriage to Roberta Hegstrom of Lawton on May 29, 1947. The couple spent their first three years farming near Lawton, Iowa. They moved to the Rembrandt area in 1950 and have lived there to present.

Wencil is survived by his wife, Roberta; children Marcia (Doug) Grabinski, of Clear Lake; Larry Small and special friend, Bonnie Hamilton, of Clear Lake; Karen (Ben) Greene, of Webb, and Gary (Julie) Small, of Rembrandt.

He is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Brent Grabinski, Elissa (Grabinski) Doyce Hanson, Jeff Grabinski, Charles (Heidi) Small, Amy (Greene) and Craig Williams, Brittanya Small, Beth (Greene) and Scott Knudtson, Justin Small, Tiara Small and Bradley Greene; and 10 great-grandchildren: Taylor, Isaac and Abigail Hanson, Allison, Rylie and Cole Knudtson, Greta, Glenn and Graham Small, and Alyvia Williams.

Gladys L. Wearda


ROCKWELL — Gladys L. (Reineke) Wearda, 95, a resident of Rockwell Community Nursing Home, Rockwell, died Wednesday evening (Jan. 5, 2005) at the nursing home in Rockwell.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 120 Third St. S. in Rockwell, with the Rev. Rev. Ronald Bolinger officiating. Interment will be at Sheffield Cemetery in Sheffield.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 120 Third St. S. in Rockwell.

Gladys L. (Reineke) Wearda was born Feb. 15, 1909 in Oakland, Iowa. She was one of six children born to Frank and Sara Jane (Clark) Reineke. Gladys and her family moved to the Rockwell area in 1919, and Gladys attended school in Rockwell.

On Sept. 23, 1940, Gladys was united in marriage to John "Jack" Wearda in Rockwell.

Gladys was a beautician operating the Gladys Beauty Shop from her home in Rockwell for many years. Gladys gave up her license at the age of 85. She was the oldest working beautician in Iowa.

Gladys was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Rockwell, the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Gallagher Post 208 of Rockwell, and a lifetime member of the Loyal Order of the Moose in Mason City.

Gladys' hobbies included playing cards and bingo, both of which she enjoyed in her younger years.

Gladys will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her brother-in-law, Richard Wearda, and her sister-in-law, Hazel Wearda; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Gladys in death are her parents; her husband John "Jack" Wearda; three sisters, Bonnie and Mildred Simon and Geneva Cahalan; and two brothers, Bruce and Frank Reineke.

MASON CITY — Mildred A. Nelson, 93, of Mason City, died Saturday (Jan. 1, 2005) at Good Shepherd Health Center.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Penn- sylvania Ave., with the Rev. James M. Magelssen officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Mildred was born Feb. 7, 1911, the daughter of Ralph A. and Louise (Hanson) Nelson in Wright County. She attended school in Wright County and the family moved to Cerro Gordo County in 1928. Mildred was a graduate of Plymouth High School.

She worked for Damon's as head of the children's department for 28 years, retiring in 1976.

Mildred was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

She was active in the Altar Guild at Trinity and was a member of RSVP.

Mildred is survived by her sister, Lucile Wyborny and husband, Don, of Mountain Home, Ark.; nephew, Paul Wyborny of Heabner, Okla.; niece, Ginny Blakely and husband, Bill, of Mountain Home, Ark.; niece, Rhonda Condie and husband, Tom, of Hyrum, Utah; and a nephew, Curtis Nelson and wife, Marty Pauley, of Mason City.

Robert ‘Bob' Mosiman


MESERVEY — Robert Walter Mosiman was born to Joseph and Katherine (Escher) Mosiman on Feb. 23, 1926, at Corwith, Iowa, one of five boys and three girls.

He attended the Belmond school system and finished his education at Toledo State Children's Home after his parents died when he was nine.

He passed away on Thursday (Jan. 6, 2005) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

He married Irene Heuberger on July 9, 1955, at Chapin, Iowa, and they made their home in Clear Lake and later in Meservey. They had one daughter, Lynne Anne Mosiman, of Omaha, Neb.

He graduated from the Des Moines Barber College and worked in Clear Lake and Meservey. Later he worked as a plumber and then drove a feed truck for Klemme Co-op until he retired.

In his youth, he hunted many ducks, geese and pheasants, ran a trapline in the fall and fished all the streams and lakes surrounding Belmond and many in Minnesota.

He lived for the weekends when he could be out with nature. He won many trap-shoot prizes and was a dead eye with a shotgun.

He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church of Meservey.

Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Salem United Methodist Church in Meservey with the Rev. Rose Calderon-Khan officiating. Burial will be in Meservey Cemetery at a later time.

He is survived by his wife and daughter; his brothers, Cecil and wife, June, of Belmond, and Art of Mason City; sisters, Beverly Faaborg and husband, Lloyd, of Swaledale and Esther Daniels and husband, Peter, of Garner.

Donna May Campbell was born on a farm near the Shell Rock River between Rock Falls and Nora Springs, Iowa, and was a sixth-generation Iowan. Her parents were Oscar and Vivian (Schultz) Andresen. She attended rural schools in and near Nora Springs and Rudd and graduated from Rudd High School.

Donna married Riley Campbell Jr. in 1945. Donna and Riley raised three children and farmed in the Rudd and Nora Springs area until Riley's death in 1973. After her husband's death, Donna attended North Iowa Area Community College and Mankato State University and was a classmate with her daughter, Kay.

After graduation from Mankato State, Donna taught art at Preston Community Schools for more than 10 years. After retiring from teaching, she resided in Story City, Iowa.

Donna will be remembered for her independence, resourcefulness and strong spirit. She was an accomplished artist and enjoyed painting, especially china painting and pottery.

She also enjoyed gardening, animals, outdoor activities, and following her grandchildren's athletic and academic activities.

Donna is survived by three children, Bruce (Beverly Evans) Campbell of Cumming, Iowa, Boyd (Debra) Campbell of Rudd, Iowa, and Kay (Ron) Cosner of Tempe, Ariz. She is also survived by grandchildren, Daniel Miller and Jillian Miller of Tempe, Ariz., Leah Badertscher of Iowa City, Andrew Campbell of Hannibal, Mo., Elizabeth Campbell and Will Campbell of Rudd, Anne Campbell of New York City, John Campbell, currently in the Peace Corps in Peru, Joshua Grenier of Minneapolis, Minn., and Clarice Grenier Grabau of Northfield, Minn.; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and one brother, Paul L. George was born May 20, 1924, in the Klemme, Iowa, area, the son of Charles and Kathlyn (Pannhoff) Mikesh. The family moved to the Forest City area, and from there to Belmond, where he finished his last two years of high school.

George was drafted into the United States Army during World War II, and received training at Camp Van Dorn in Mississippi with the 63rd Division, 254th Infantry Regiment, attached to the 3rd Army. He served as a machine gunner in France and Germany on the front lines.

George received the following military medals for his service tenure: Bronze Star Medal with "V" Device, First Oak Leaf Cluster to the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two bronze service stars for the Rhineland and Central European Campaigns, World War II Victory Medal, Distinguished Unit Emblem, Army of Occupation Medal with Germany Clasp, and Combat Infantryman Badge, Presidential Unit Citation (which was awarded to the entire 254th Infantry Regiment), and the French Croix de Guerre with Palm for Colmar and the Battle of the Bulge.

Immediately following the end of the war, he was sent to Berlin as cadre, as one of the first to arrive to set up the Office of Military Government, Berlin Sector. He served as honor guard and received training in military intelligence. In 1947, he was discharged from the Army.

He went into civil service as deputy chief warden at Spandau Prison in Berlin; where the men that were convicted at the Nuremberg Trials were imprisoned.

He returned home after his father's death in 1949.

George was united in marriage to Emily Goll in 1955. He farmed near Hickory Grove north of Belmond. George enjoyed farming and the challenges it presented.

Following his retirement in 1989, he enjoyed many hobbies, some of the more noteable were gardening, auctions, inventive cooking, and nature watching.

He very much loved polka music and always had a camera nearby to fulfill his enjoyment of photography. George was avid reader, and loved a good debate.

George always spoke highly of his parents and the values that they taught him. He was a man of integrity; his word was his bond. He also had an unselfish nature for helping others in need. People sensed they could have confidence in him as perfect strangers would come up to him and tell him their life stories.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Kathlyn Mikesh; and his sister, Grace Zaspel.

MANLY — Carroll Dean "Sam" Schmidt, 71, of Manly, died Thursday (Jan. 6, 2005) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City, surrounded by his family.

Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at Bethel United Methodist Church, 403 E. South St. in Manly, with the Rev. Robert Cumings officiating. Burial will be in Manly Cemetery in Manly, where full military honors will be conducted by members of Edward Tosel Post No. 110, Manly.

Carroll Dean Schmidt was born Nov. 14, 1933, at Northwood, a son of Fred and Alma (Olson) Schmidt. He graduated from Northwood High School in 1952, joined the Army in 1953, serving two years in the 432nd Engineer Battalion in Germany as a heavy equipment operator.

He married Wanda Marie Reynolds on Nov. 23, 1957, at Mason City. Sam and Wanda began their family in Mason City before moving to Manly in 1969, where they have resided ever since.

Sam worked at Libby-Owens-Ford in Mason City from the day it opened in May 1967 until the day it closed in November 1991.

Known as "Smitty" at LOF, he took early retirement when the Mason City plant closed. He chose to continue working at Fleet Guard before retiring to his garage in 1995.

Sam was a Minnesota Vikings fan who enjoyed playing cards with his family and friends, woodworking in the garage, fishing, buying anything for a buck at local auctions, family celebrations in Carpenter and spending time with his grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory are his five children, David Schmidt, of Mason City, Theresa Corell and her husband, Ron, of Manly, Carrie Schmidt and Jennifer Schallock, of Charles City, Tracy Schmidt, of Clear Lake and Cristy Cooper, of Manly; sister-in-law, Alice Anderson, of Mason City; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; eight granddogs; dear friend, Julie Neuberger; and son-in-law, Scott Cooper.

Sam was known as "Grandpa Sam" to many.

Fred Weiss was born Sept. 29, 1920, in Selby, S.D., the son of Gust and Katie (Riddle) Weiss.

Fred served in the United States Army in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

On Jan. 14, 1945, he was united in marriage to Vera (Woiwod) Weiss. To this union two children were born.

After returning from active duty, Fred farmed near Garner. He also worked and retired from Winnebago Industries.

He spent his retirement years woodworking and re-finishing projects.

He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Mason City and V.F.W. Post No. 5515 in Garner.

He is survived by his wife, Vera Weiss, of Mason City; daughters, Sharon (Art) Hitz and Linda (John) Hamilton; grandsons, Jeff (Jennifer) Hamilton and Bryan Hitz; three sisters and one brother.

MASON CITY — Robert E. Schaecher, 77, of 501 S. Kentucky Ave., formerly of Nampa, Idaho, died Monday (Jan. 3, 2005) at Heritage Care Center after a courageous battle with cancer.

Per his request, his body has been cremated. Memorial services will be held at a later date.

There will be no visitation.

Robert was born Aug. 15, 1927, in Columbus, Neb., the son of Leonard and Mabel Patton.

After serving his country, he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army.

He worked for Boise Cascade Corp. in Burley, Idaho. He then moved to Nampa when a new plant was opened.

Robert and wife, Norma, moved to Mason City in 2001.

He enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting.

MASON CITY — Winifred M. Clausen, 96, of St. Ansgar died Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2005) at the Good Samaritan Center, St. Ansgar.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Mark Reasoner officiating. Burial will be at the Riverside Cemetery, Riceville, Iowa.

Winifred was born Aug. 19, 1908, in Mason City to John Henry and Grace (Hemenway) Tisor. She married Martin Rasmussen who was later killed in a gasoline explosion.

She married Clarence Clausen on August 24, 1946 in Mason City. They lived on a farm near David, Iowa, moving to St. Ansgar in 1976. She enjoyed spending time and playing cards at the Senior Saints Center in St. Ansgar, where she had been president for four years. She loved to be around and talk with people. Winifred enjoyed bingo in her later years as well as traveling.

Winifred is survived by two sons, Archie Rasmussen of Mason City and Roger Rasmussen of Nora Springs; two daughters, Darlene Summer of Floyd and Alice Clausen of Osage, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, three sons, three daughters, five brothers, two grandchildren and one great- granddaughter.

Beverly is survived by her mother, Wava (Pine) Christensen; sister, Janice Bergan and husband, Richard; brother, Kenneth Christensen and wife, Nancy, all of Mason City, and several nieces and nephews.

Leila Dorothy Nash was born May 18, 1919, near Colwell in Chickasaw County, a daughter of Volney Osborne and Gladys Vera (Kinney) Nash, and died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at the Hospice Unit of the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

The first years of her life, she lived near Rolla, Mo., later returning to rural Marble Rock, where she received her education in the Garber Country School. She later attended and graduated from the Marble Rock Public Schools. She played the slide trombone in the school band and learned to play piano from her aunt, Bernice Kinney. Leila went on to attend and graduate from the State Teachers College (UNI) in Cedar Falls in 1945.

Upon obtaining her teaching degree, she taught second grade in Postville, Iowa, for several years before teaching in Geneva. It was through a teacher friend that Leila was introduced to Peter Lauterbach.

On March 7, 1950, she was united in marriage to Peter Lauterbach at the Bethel Baptist Church in Marble Rock. Following their marriage, they bought a 160-acre farm five miles west and south of Marble Rock. There, they raised three boys, sending them all through college. Leila and Peter farmed until their retirement in 1982. When they retired, Brian and Edward Lauterbach rented the land on the family farm. Leila and Peter lived on the family farm until entering the Salsbury Baptist Home in September 2004.

Leila was a loving wife and mother. She was a good cook who learned her skills at "mamma's side" at a young age. She enjoyed serving her family by cooking their meals, sewing and doing needle work.

Liela will be sadly missed by her husband, Peter Lauterbach of Marble Rock; her children, John (Catherine) Lauterbach of Fort Worth, Texas, Edward Lauterbach of Marble Rock, Brian (Barbara Blomki) Lauterbach of Charles City; grandaughter, Anna Alis Lauterbach of Charles City, brother-in-law, Paul Gratias, of Osage; nephews, George Nash of Rockford, Claud Nash of Rockford, James Nash of Florida, Tom Nash of Rudd, Daniel Nash of Charles City, Lyle Snelson, Volney Nash of Kentucky, Roger Gratias of Osage, Raymond Gratias of Fort Collins, Colo.; nieces, Gloria Nash of Washington, Miriam Nash of Des Moines, Kathy Snelson of Tipp City, Ohio; grand-nephews and grand-nieces and great-grand-nieces and great-grand-nephews.

Milton and Audree Raizes


NAPLES, Fla. — Milton and Audree (Silberman) Raizes of Naples, Fla., formerly of Mason City, died Jan. 2 and Jan. 7, 2005, respectively. Milton died at the age of 88 years and Audree at the age of 86 years.

Milton was born in Mason City on May 26, 1916, the son of the late Rose and Sam Raizes. Audree was born Dec. 8, 1918, the daughter of the late Claire and Benjamin Silberman.

Milton was a graduate of Mason City Junior College and the University of Minnesota. Audree was a graduate of the University of Minnesota with honors in English literature. Milton served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1939, Milton and Audree were married in St. Paul, Minn. Together, they would spend the next 65 years, having celebrated their anniversary on Dec. 31.

Mr. Raizes owned and operated Raizes Department Stores in Mason City, Elkader and Des Moines. He was a past president of the Mason City Chamber of Commerce. He was an active member of the Society of the Free and Accepted Masons and past president of the Mason City chapter of the Shriners.

He received the highest honor of the Silver Beaver Award for his work with the Winnebago Boy Scout Council. The Silver Beaver Award is awarded for outstanding longtime service to youth within the Boy Scout Council.

He sat on the board of directors of Upper Iowa College. He was a past president of Adas Israel Synagogue in Mason City and following his retirement was active in the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE), sharing with others the business knowledge he gained during his lifetime. Upon moving to Naples, Mr. Raizes continued his community involvement as a longtime volunteer at Naples Community Hospital.

Mrs. Raizes was a national officer of Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority. She was active in the American Association of University Women (AAUW), as well as in the Philanthropic Education Organization (P.E.O.). She was the past president of the Mason City chapter of Hadassah.

Upon moving to Naples, Mrs. Raizes was an active member and supporter of Temple Shalom and its sisterhood. She was active in the National Council of Jewish Women as well as a founding member of the Gulfshore chapter of the Brandeis University National Women's Committee. She supported and was active in the Naples Alliance for Children and the Naples Philharmonic Center for the Arts.

Mr. and Mrs. Raizes leave behind their loving son, Dr. Gary, and his wife, Deborah Raizes, of Scarsdale, N.Y., Milton's dear brother, Harold, and his wife, Sonia, of Houston, Texas, and their adoring grandchildren, Steven and Elizabeth, both of New York, N.Y.

They were predeceased by Milton's brother, Leon.

Funeral services were held in Valhalla, N.Y.

Ann Jean was born March 19, 1916, in Mason City, a daughter of James and Louise (Hazen) Nugent. She graduated from St. Joseph Catholic High School in 1932 and then began working as a secretary for Puth Plumbing in Mason City. She later worked as a secretary in purchasing for the Decker packing plant.

Ann Jean was united in marriage to Atlo Grelk on June 14, 1944, at the Holy Family Catholic Church Rectory in Mason City. She was devoted homemaker to her husband and three children. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last year. Ann Jean greatly enjoyed music and was a longtime member of the North Iowa Symphony Orchestra, playing the violin. She was also an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Ann Jean will be greatly missed by her husband of 60 years, Atlo, of Mason City; three children and their spouses, Thomas Grelk and Charlotte M. Price of Junction City, Kan., Melodi and Steve Revercomb of Centennial, Colo., and Carol and Bob Voss of Runnells, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Cpt. Brian J. Grelk and Mary Jesch of Langley Air Force Base, Va., Lori Grelk of Junction City, Kan., David Grelk of Topeka, Kan., Matthew Revercomb of CSU, Ft. Collins, Colo., Courtney Revercomb of CU, Boulder, Colo., Mindy Voss of Cedar Rapids, Jana Voss of Runnells and Stephanie Voss of Runnells; three great-grandchildren, Hannah, Isaac and Faith Grelk, and many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy Ann Popp was born June 27, 1930, in Thornton, the daughter of Aksel and Mabel (Andersen) Jensen.

She graduated from Thornton High School, where she enjoyed playing basketball and playing the piccolo. After high school, she attended and graduated from the AIB College of Business in Des Moines.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Lawrence Popp on Jan. 7, 1958, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Clear Lake. To this union three children were born. They made their home in Thornton until 1969, when they moved to Mason City. Dorothy went to work for Kemper Insurance Co. in Mason City, continuing to work numerous part-time jobs. She also had a day care in her home.

Dorothy retired in 1997 due to health reasons.

She will be greatly missed, especially helping others when they needed a place to stay.

Dorothy loved playing bingo, singing opera, baking her special sugar cookies, making chocolate-covered cherries and playing pinochle. Her greatest love was spending time with her family and friends. She greatly loved attending all of her grandchildren's activities. Dorothy also enjoyed going to LaJames every Friday to get her hair done. She attended St. James Lutheran Church, Mason City.

Don was born Nov. 7, 1925, in Belmond, Iowa, the son of Thomas and Alice (Hendrichs) Quinlan. He graduated from Thompson High School. Don enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944, serving as electrician mate third class. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

Don married June Mandt June 3, 1957, in Mason City. He worked a short time at Jacob E. Decker and Sons, then as a route driver for Marshall and Swift for 38 years. He retired in 1987.

Don enjoyed hunting, the outdoors and extracting honey from the bee hives in his back yard. He took great pride in everything he did, always striving for perfection.

Don was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the VFW.

Diann was born Aug. 11, 1942, in Norfolk, Neb., to Harold and Irene (Mollhoff) Foss. She graduated from Norfolk High School in 1960 and attended Norfolk Junior College. She graduated from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1965.

While working for the Campfire Girls in Lincoln, Neb., she met and married Van Ivor Renoe on Sept. 30, 1967, in Norfolk. After marrying, they moved to Mankato, Minn., and then to the St. Paul area where she worked for SPARC (Saint Paul Association of Retarded Citizens) before moving to Hampton in 1969.

While in Hampton she worked for the family real estate and insurance business until 1987 when she began working for the Iowa Department of Revenue. She retired from the state in 1999.

She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton.

Eva had many interests including genealogy, playing bridge and collecting antiques; however, collecting antique glassware was her true passion.

She is survived by her sons, James William, of Fishers, Ind., Jonathan Ivor and his wife, Janet, of Lincoln, Neb., Michael Foss and his wife, Brenda, of Ankeny; sisters, Cheryl Donahoo and her husband, William, of Mason City, Patricia Foss of Neligh, Neb.; three granddaughters, Khrystyne Sarah, Kaitlynn Marie and Kassidy Carol.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband.

Gertrude C. Flood

GARNER — Gertrude C. Flood, 92, of Garner died Saturday (Jan. 8, 2005) at the Concord Care Center, Garner.

Her funeral will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner with the Rev. Michael Schueller officiating. Burial will be in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner with a combined Catholic Daughters of the Americas and Rosary Society rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a Scriptural remembrance service at 6 p.m.

Gertrude Cecilia Flood, the daughter of Michael Henry and Katherine Gertrude (Engstler) Tobin, was born January 10, 1912, at Garner. She graduated from Garner High School in 1930 and that fall began work in the office of the Hancock County Recorder in Garner. She worked in the recorder's office until 1939, when she began her duties in the office of the Hancock County Abstract Company, a position she held until she retired in 1976.

On September 9, 1969, she was married to Daniel E. Flood at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner. Dan passed away on October 17, 1983.

Gertrude enjoyed reading and her church and club activities. She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Rosary Society, Contesters Club, Progressive Club and several card clubs.

Gertrude is survived by her niece, Sandra Naig and her husband, Terry, of Cylinder; great-nieces and nephews, Melissa Naig Lentz and her husband, Jayme, of Iowa Falls, Matthew Naig and his wife, Carrie, and their daughter, Madison of Peoria, Ill., Michael Naig and his wife, Jaime, of Des Moines and Marsha Bro and her husband, Kris, of Des Moines; her step-daughter, Catherine Kadrlik of Garner; step-grandson, Daniel Kadrlik and his wife, Lori, and their three children, Thomas, Kendra and Riannan of Garner; two step-granddaughters, Debra Bannister and her husband, Randy, and their daughter, Miranda of Crystal Lake and Debra's daughter, Ryen Kothenbeutel and her daughter, Brianna, of Forest City and Polly Kothenbeutel and her children, Amber and Kory of Sheffield.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel; her father, Michael, in 1962; her mother, Kate, in 1975; a brother, Joseph L. Tobin and his wife, Virginia; a sister, Katherine, who died in infancy; and her step son-in-law, Wencl Kadrlik.

CHARLES CITY — Eva Scheidecker, 88, of Charles City, entered into the presence of her Lord on Friday, (Jan. 7, 2005) at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Eva Scheidecker will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Mr. Steve Faulkner will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Nashua.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Visitation will continue at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Eva Myrle (Smiley) Scheidecker was born April 4, 1916, near Osage, Minn., the daughter of Ellsworth James and Vina Mae (Estabrooks) Smiley. When she was two years old, they moved to Staples, Minn., where she grew up.

At an early age, she came to know the Lord as her Savior. Eva graduated from Staples High School in 1935, received her nurses training at Minneapolis, Minn., and did private nursing for several years.

On November 6, 1941, Eva was united in marriage to William "Bill" Scheidecker at Minneapolis, Minn. They moved to Brownsville, Texas, where he was stationed in the Army. Upon Bill's discharge they farmed near Nashua, moved to a farm near Greene for five years and then in March of 1955 purchased a farm east of Greene. There they raised their family of six children. She was in fellowship with the Charles City Assembly.

Eva will always be remembered as a devoted mother who provided for her family in every way possible, always putting their needs first. Fond memories center on her love and concern, singing hymns as she worked, cooking, gardening, canning, sewing and always placing family first.

Living family members include three daughters and their husbands, Mary and Allan Whiteside of Charles City, Dorothy and David Kasper of Brookville, Pa., and Celia and Brian Prigge of St. Cloud, Minn.; three sons and their wives, William and Martha Scheidecker of Hampton, Robert and Pauline Scheidecker of Clarksville, and James and Jennifer Scheidecker of Anoka, Minn.; 15 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and two sisters, Clarabelle Canner of Clearwater, Fla., and Twylla and her husband, John Grover, of Portland, Ore.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill in 1975; a brother, George Smiley; and two sisters, Gladys Ducommun and Francis Grant.
