Adelaide Jimenez

ST. ANSGAR — Adelaide Jimenez, 83, of 4895 Dancer Ave., St. Ansgar, died early Monday morning (Jan, 24, 2005) at her home.

Funeral services have been set for 1:30 p.m. Friday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City, with Rev. Lydia Mittag officiating. Interment will be held at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

The family will greet friends and relatives from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, prior to Adelaide's service at Fullerton Funeral Home.

Those wishing to extend memorials or expressions of sympathy may direct them to the Adelaide Jimenez Memorial Fund.

Thoughts, condolences and stories may be emailed to the family at the www.fullertonfh.com.

Adelaide Jimenez was born Dec. 18, 1921, in Penjamo Ciudadano, Mexico, to Acencion and Aurelia (Alcantar) Aguirre. She was the first of 10 children born to her parents.

When Adelaide was a year old, her family moved to the United States. Adelaide lived in Mason City for approximately 50 years until the late 1970s, then moved with her family to Portland, Ore., for many years, then relocated back to Mason City in 1998. This December, Adelaide moved to St. Ansgar to live with her daughter, Linda, and her family.

Adelaide was employed at Lida's Beauty Shop as a cosmetologist for many years and had also worked at Decker meat-packing and Damon's Department Store.

Adelaide was very proud of her Mexican heritage. She attended classes, learning to proficiently and fluently speak and write both Spanish and English. She was one of few who held dual citizenships in the United States and Mexico. Adelaide was a well-known bilingual interpreter for many people in the Mason City area and across the state of Iowa. She also traveled to Mexico numerous times in order to assist with language barriers between the two countries.

On Sept. 21, 1942, Adelaide was united in marriage to Joseph Leondro Jimenez, Sr. in Albert Lea, Minn. They became the proud parents of eight children.

Adelaide's family describe their mother as a very artistic, loving, hard-working and talented woman, she seemed to sleep little! She took great pride in nurturing her family and was a true go-getter in filling the hours in a day. Adelaide found great joy in crocheting, restoring furniture and antiques, including caning and upholstering, sewing doll clothes and collecting bisque dolls. Some of Adelaide's leisure time and interests included growing house plants, gardening, canning vegetables and fruit, quilting and oil painting.

Adelaide was very giving of her time and resources as she assisted at the Senior Citizen's Center, purchased clothing for those in need, and in her earlier years was a volunteer at a local children's day care center. She sacrificed much and was devoted to her faith and family. Her daughters recall that large family gatherings were important to Adelaide and many times their mother cooked up to 50 dozen tamales for Christmas. Cooking Mexican dishes and entertaining in her home was her specialty!

Adelaide will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her children, Maria Hansen of Joice, Linda Quinones of St. Ansgar, and Laura McDowall, Joseph (Sylvia) Jimenez, Jr., Sarogosa Jimenez and Theodore Jimenez, all of Portland, Ore. Adelaide will also be a cherished memory of her sister, Carmen (Thomas) Jimenez of Mason City; her two brothers, Manuel (Dorothy) Aguirre and Jackie Aguirre, both of St. Paul, Minn.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Preceding Adelaide in death is her husband, Joseph Jimenez, Sr. in December 1977; her daughter, Margo Jimenez; her son, Anthony Jimenez; her parents; five sisters and one brother.

Irving Arnold Flatness

NORTHWOOD — Irving Arnold Flatness, 86, of Northwood, died Tuesday (Jan. 25, 2005) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City after complications of pneumonia.

Visitation will be today from 5 to 7 p.m. at Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home in Northwood.

Irving was a hardworking man who did not have much formal education but taught himself a lot throughout his life. He confirmed his baptism and faith in Jesus Christ as his Savior in the Lutheran church. Irving married Olga Beulah Bakken on March 15, 1942, in Clarks Grove, Minn.

Irving worked hard farming, milking cows, custom combining trucking; which he really enjoyed a lot. He had a sense of humor and like the Flatness' men liked to rash others. In their early years of marriage, Olga and Irving liked to go dancing at the Terp in Austin, Minn. In the late 70s, 80s and early 90s they enjoyed camping around the area, they even got to the Black Hills, Wisconsin Dells and Branson. They enjoyed meeting others and visiting. They visited their neighbors in Deer Creek a lot and enjoyed playing cards.

Irving retired from farming in 1984, but stayed on the farm for 11 more years because Olga loved the farm. In retirement, they enjoyed going to sales. In 1995, they moved to Northwood on Shellrock Drive where he lived until we took him to the hospital on Sunday afternoon. For more than 10 years Irving cared for Olga, who had Alzheimer's, until we knew she needed to be in a care facility in November 2000. He really loved and did so much for Olga so she could stay in her home. Olga, his wife, died 1 1/2 years ago and Sharon, his daughter who died 32 1/2 years ago, will welcome Irving, a child of God, to his heavenly home.

Bonnie Sue Anderson

GOODELL — Bonnie Sue Anderson, 43, of Goodell, died Friday (Jan. 28, 2005) at her home in rural Goodell, with her husband, Terry, and her family at her side. She fought a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral service will be held 10:30 Tuesday at St. John Lutheran Church, Belmond. The Rev. Lowell H. Halvorson will be officiating.

Visitation will be today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First Street S.E. in Belmond and one hour prior to the church services on Tuesday.

Memorials are suggested to the family of Bonnie Anderson.

Bonnie Nelson was born June 13, 1961, at the Belmond Community Hospital, the daughter of Gerald and Irene (Renicker) Nelson. She attended Belmond Community Schools and graduated from Belmond High School with the class of 1979. She had a received a degree in horse science husbandry from Kirkwood Community College. In her childhood she became infatuated with, and especially fond of, horses. It was a passion she carried throughout her entire life.

Bonnie was united in marriage to Terry R. Anderson, March 20, 1982, at St. John Lutheran Church in Belmond. Following their marriage, Terry enlisted in the United States Army. Bonnie traveled with Terry to Germany for his one-and-half-year tour. They had been on numerous tours while in Europe and saw many exciting and majestic sights and places. These experiences were a wonderful part of Bonnie's 43 years of life.

Bonnie and Terry had two sons, Joshua Leonard, and Duane Gerald Anderson. She was blessed with the 30 some hours Joshua lived. Much of Bonnie's energy was focused on the loving care for Duane. She and Terry have devoted themselves to providing Duane with the best care, love, and parenting they could give him.

Although much of the last 16 years Bonnie's life was focused on what was best for her son, she was very ambitious with her time and talents. Bonnie was vice president of the Ladies auxiliary, which she enjoyed meeting with the gals. She was an enterprising businesswoman and accomplished author. Bonnie has been published more than 200 times in instructional books, novels, periodicals, newsletters, newspaper articles, and websites. She was in the process of making audio book recordings for her son, Duane, to be able to experience some of her writings.

Bonnie owned and operated her own publishing company, Magefire Book Publishing. Bonnie's lifelong passion for horses was a major part of her business career and leisure time. Bonnie owned and operated the Saddles & More tack shop at the couple's acreage in rural Goodell. A favorite pastime was horse archery, a sport of archery shooting on a galloping horse. Her zest for this sport allowed her to become very accomplished at this sport in a short time. Bonnie had published a book entitled, "The Horse in Horse Archery — A Buying, Riding, and Training Guide." It is a comprehensive overview of this unique equestrian sport. She was the only woman in the state of Iowa to attend horse archery training. She was active in the International Horse Archery Festival as a board member.

Bonnie enjoyed the simple things of life including time spent with her son, Duane, and husband, Terry. Her father was one of the most important people of her life and mother had been a special part of her life too. She enjoyed times spent with her siblings and extended family. Bonnie was an avid reader, when she wasn't working with her horses, she was reading. She loved animals and in her youth was involved in FFA. In her spare time, Bonnie liked to go in-line skating and had been active in karate programs for a number of years.

She will be remembered by her family as quiet, yet, stern in her beliefs and passions. Bonnie had a wonderful and warm sense of humor that shown through best when she was faced with the trials of life, especially during the adversity in her battle with cancer. Her husband will cherish the special bonding time that he shared with "Bon" during the final weeks and days of her life. The two fought the dreadful complications of her disease until the very conclusion of her battle.

Those left to cherish the memory of her life include her husband, Terry R. Anderson, of Goodell; her son, Duane, at home with his father; mother, Irene Nelson, Belmond; her sister, Lee Ann Nelson, Belmond; a brother, Jerry, and wife, Kym Nelson, Renton, Wash.; half-sister, Betty Lou Hammond, Belvue, Neb.; her special companion, horse, "Wizzo"; many nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, family, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, Gerald; her son, Joshua Leonard; and an infant sister, Geraldine.

A very special thanks to Velere and Juanita Stromer of Klemme for all the love and healing.
