Eugene Logan Kendall, fondly known as "Robin" or "Gene," was born Jan. 20, 1924, in Mason City to Arlie A. and Eunice W. (Tharp) Kendall. Gene was the oldest, and only son, of two children born to his parents. He attended school in Mason City and enjoyed playing the guitar during his earlier years.
On June 3, 1945, at the First Christian Church in Mason City, Gene married Lila E. Hall, his childhood sweetheart. The couple first met in the neighborhood where they both lived, Lila in kindergarten and Gene in second grade. That early childhood acquaintance continued to blossom throughout the years, and Gene and Lila were looking forward to their upcoming 60th wedding anniversary this June.
He was a lifelong resident of Mason City and was a former member of the Moose Lodge and several mixed bowling leagues.
Many will well-remember Robin as the owner and operator of Robin's Van Lines in Mason City from 1950 until 1967 and later a custodian and bus driver for the Mason City School District for 17 years, retiring in 1986.
Robin's family describes him as a great "people person." He was a perfectionist in his endeavors, sometimes head strong, witty, outgoing and honest. His wife and daughters recall many a humorous event involving Robin, such as the "chicken-pickin' '' story.
Robin was an accomplished woodworker and spent much time and precision remodeling homes.
He favored eating homemade cookies and ice cream, tending to vegetable gardens, taking short family trips and fishing.
He will be sadly missed by his special companion, his dog, Peggy Sue.
Robin will be missed dearly by all who have shared in his life.
He is lovingly survived by his wife of 59 years, Lila Kendall of Mason City; his three daughters, Terry (Ken) Kiefer of Juneau, Alaska, Debbie (Nick) Leonard of Wewoka, Okla. and Robin (Ryan) Langner of Boscobel, Wis., and his sister, Arlene Rossom, of Mason City.
