Dean Earl Shoars
OSAGE Dean Earl Shoars, age 84, of

Center in Osage.

County Regional Health Center Hospital

How can mere words express the true
measure of a man? Dean Earl Shoars is
best measured by what he was. His eyes
saw good in others, his words encouraged
good in others, his hands did good for
others, his heart was good as gold. No
man ever loved, gave, or sacrificed more
for his wife and family. He was a man
who was generous to a fault, never
turned his back on those in need, was
the source of strength in uncertain
times. He provided an example of what
kind of person we all aspire to be. He
was our role model, our mentor, and our
guiding light. We love you and miss you.
We will always carry you in our hearts.
Our lives will be a tribute and
testimony to others to all you taught
us. He leaves this world a better place.
We, his family and friends, are better
people for having known him.
"His master replied, Well done, good
and faithful servant! You have been
faithful with a few things; I will put
you in charge of many things. Come and
share in your master's happiness!"
Matthew 25:21

Cecil Mott
MASON CITY Heaven's
team of angels has
recruited a worthy
teammate: Cecil Mott,
83, of Mason City died
peacefully on Jan. 11,
2005.
A celebration of Cec's
life will be held at 2
p.m. Friday at the
WAYside Chapel, First
United Methodist Church,
119 S. Georgia Ave. with
the Rev. Dianne B.
Christopher and the Rev.
Jim Stiles officiating.
Interment will be held
at a later date in
Memorial Park Cemetery.
He was much loved and
will be deeply missed by
his wife, Mary Jean, his
children,
granddaughters, a
great-grandson, and his
sister Pauline Goranson.
His family includes his
wife, Mary Jean of Mason
City; Andrea and her
husband Larry Dunbar of
Minneapolis; Kathy
Kellogg of Austin,
Texas, and her daughters
Annette, Audrey, and
Alicia; and Laird Mott
and his wife Mary, of
Omaha, with their
daughters Leah, Michal
Lauren, and Caitlin. He
also leaves many dear
nephews and nieces.
Cecil was preceded in
death by his parents,
Carl and Edna Mott; his
siblings Inez, Arlene,
Harold, and Leroy; his
son-in-law, Steven
Kellogg; and his golfing
buddy, brother-in-law,
Ken Goranson.
Born (Nov. 15, 1921) and
educated in Mason City,
Cecil wrestled for Coach
Howard Barker, who
became a lifelong friend
and mentor. Cecil's
college studies at the
University of Northern
Iowa were sidetracked
for two years of Army
service. He returned in
1945 to finish his
teaching degree. He
compiled an outstanding
record in college
wrestling, crowned by
winning the National
Collegiate Championship
in 1946. He tried out
for the Olympic
wrestling team as well.
Iowa Falls recruited Cec
to start a high school
wrestling program, which
included buttonholing
young strong-looking
farm boys and talking
them into coming out for
wrestling. Though
challenging, this task,
successfully guided by
Cec's coaching skills
and an involved
community, resulted in
several state champs.
As he was building up
the wrestling program,
he took on the challenge
of building a home for
his young family. Al
Waite, an industrial
arts teacher and close
friend, and Cec worked
together on the house,
which was so solidly
constructed, it will
probably outlast us all!
The friendships and
community encouragement
made his tenure in Iowa
Falls very rewarding
both professionally and
personally. As he
continued his education,
and his coaching
reputation grew, other
school systems took
note. With most of his
family in Mason City, an
offer to teach and coach
there held special
appeal. Although leaving
the supportive Iowa
Falls community was
difficult, he moved his
family to Mason City in
1960 and began teaching
high school math, and
coaching wrestling.
Always motivated by his
life-long wish to help
young people, he became
a certified guidance
counselor at Mason City
High School.
As a counselor, teacher,
coach and parent he gave
generously of himself,
and personally modeled
the character traits he
hoped to instill in his
children, students and
athletes, such as
setting high goals,
striving to excel, using
good sportsmanship, and
acting with integrity.
Cec had a gentle good
nature and twinkly blue
eyes that made you feel
he believed in you, and
that everything would
turn out well.
Cecil's family wishes to
express our heartfelt
thanks to Jack Musker
and his excellent,
loving staff in the
Manly Nursing and Rehab
Center.
