STEWARTVILLE, Minn. - Donald "Butch" Burzette, 57, of 601 23rd St. N.W. in Stewartville, Minn., and formerly of Mason City and Charles City, died Thursday (Oct. 24, 2002) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Church of the Nazarene in Rochester, Minn., with the Rev. Pat Thomas officiating.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

MARIE WIRTJES

RAKE - Marie Wirtjes, 86, passed away on Wednesday (Oct. 23, 2002) at the United Hospital in Blue Earth, Minn.

Funeral services for Marie Wirtjes will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Zion Lutheran Church in Rake, with the Rev. John Lee officiating. Burial will be at West Cemetery in Rake.

Visitation was held Friday at Winter Funeral Home in Buffalo Center. There will be visitation one hour prior to services today at the church.

Marie Eleanora Wirtjes, daughter of Albert and Barbara (Baumann) Weringa, was born Nov. 21, 1915, in Lakota, Iowa. She was baptized at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lakota and was confirmed there in 1930.

Marie was a graduate of Lakota High School with the class of 1933.

On Sept. 6, 1930, Marie was united in marriage to John Arthur Wirtjes. This union was blessed with four children, Ronda, Don, Gary and Lyle.

Marie enjoyed the company of her many friends and family. For many years, she provided transportation for friends in need. She was an avid quilter. Many of the quilts she helped make benefited the Rake community and missions abroad.

As a senior citizen, she was selected and received the Governor's Volunteer of the Year award for Winnebago County. She also appeared on stage for the Rake Community Theater and received a certificate for "Learning Lines Perfectly." Her wit and charm will be missed.

Left to cherish her memory are her four children, Ronda and her husband, Paul Kirkegaard, of Dubuque; Don and his wife, Sarah, of Albert Lea, Minn.; Gary and his wife, Barb, of Harlan, Iowa, and Lyle and his wife, Eloise, of Thompson, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren, and her sister, Irene Peterson, of Lakota, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John, in 1980, and by three brothers.

EDNA L. GINTHER

ROCKFORD - Edna L. Ginther, 83, formerly of Rockford and most recently of 1400 Tarpon Center Drive, Venice, Fla., died Thursday (Oct. 10, 2002) at the Hospice House in Venice.

Graveside inurnment services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Riverside Cemetery, Rockford, with the Rev. Kenneth Kent of the First United Methodist Church, Rockford, officiating. There will be no visitation.

Edna was born one of five children to John William Richardson Sr. and Blanche Dallas Richardson on July 6, 1919, in Indianapolis, Ind. She graduated from Center Grove High School in Greenwood, Ind., and then graduated from Indiana Central Business College in Indianapolis with a legal secretary degree. She was employed at an insurance company for a short time and then was a secretary for several different attorneys.

After moving to Algona in 1946 and then to Rockford about 1950, she met her future husband, Hoyle H. Ginther, and they were united in marriage on Jan. 17, 1959, at Sioux Falls, S.D. They remained residents of the Rockford area, where Edna assisted her husband on the family farm as well as cooking for the farm hands.

Edna was very active with her church and the UMW of the First United Methodist Church. She was also an avid golfer, winning many tournaments at the Rockford Country Club and other area courses. During the winter months, she enjoyed playing bridge. She moved to Florida in 1999.

Those thankful in sharing Edna's life include her stepdaughter, Marilynne Gossett, of Grand Junction, Colo.; her stepson, Gary Ginther, of Rockford; one sister, Helen, and her husband, Oren Sutton, of Greenwood, Ind.; and one brother, Kenneth, and his wife, Freda Richardson, of Peachtree City, Ga.; several step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hoyle, on Sept. 12, 1985; one sister, Rosemary Cook, and one brother, John W. Richardson Jr.

LLOYD E. BARTA

MESA, Ariz. - Former longtime Manly resident Lloyd E. Barta, 82, passed away on Sept. 23, 2002, in Mesa.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Springs St. in Manly, with the Rev. Robert Cumings of the Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly officiating. Inurnment will be in the Manly Cemetery, with military graveside honors by the Edward Tosel American Legion Post 110 of Manly.

Visitation will be one hour prior to service time on Tuesday at the chapel.

Lloyd E. Barta was born March 9, 1920, in Mason City, the son of John and Myrtle (Finch) Barta. He attended and received his education in the Manly Public Schools, graduating from Manly High School in 1940. He continued working for Barta Transfer.

He was united in marriage to Thelma Jean Williams on March 13, 1941, in Charles City. In 1943, he was called to serve his country in the European Theater, including the Normandy invasion during World War II.

After his honorable discharge from the Army in 1945, he owned and operated a United States Postal Star Route for many years in the North Iowa area. He continued his career as a transport driver for Mitchell Transport, retiring in 1982. In 1984, Lloyd and Jean moved to Mesa, where they lived until his death.

Lloyd enjoyed bowling and hunting, but his great love and enjoyment was his family and grandchildren.

He was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly and the Edward Tosel American Legion Post 110 of Manly, and was a volunteer fireman for the Manly Fire Department.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Jean Barta, of Mesa; two daughters, Leanne Elwood and her husband, Ward, of Fort Worth, Texas, and Joy Kottwitz and her husband, Randy, of Wylie, Texas; five grandchildren, Jeffery Elwood and his wife, Nanthale, Coleen Fish, Melinda Moore and her husband, Jake, Kristen Hogen and J.T. Hogen; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Wilma Lee, and her husband, Russell, of Mason City; several nieces and nephews, as well as other relatives and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

MASON CITY - Loren B. Miller, 62, of 1501 S. Louisiana Ave., died Friday (Oct. 25, 2002) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Rolling Acres Christian Reformed Church with the Rev. William Backlin officiating. Interment will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Grundy Center.

Loren B. Miller was born Dec. 21, 1939, in Meriden, Iowa, the son of John P. and Vera Kathleen (Dunn) Miller. He attended Aurelia schools and graduated from Aurelia High School in 1958. He then attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, receiving a bachelor's degree in science education.

Loren taught school for one year in Pomeroy, then taught in Tipton High School for 30 years. While teaching in Tipton, he obtained his master's degree from the University of Iowa.

He was married to Carolyn J. Winslow on Aug. 12, 1962, in Grundy Center. They recently moved to Mason City, where they attended Mason City Covenant Church.

Loren and Carolyn spent several summers teaching at Christian camps. He was a life-long sports fan. Loren related well with his students and was a wonderful father and grandpa. Knowing that this life is only temporary, he set his hope on his Savior Jesus Christ. Loren is now enjoying freedom from his illness in heaven.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn J. Miller, Mason City; three sons, Maj. Joel W. Miller and wife Judi, Katy, Texas, David L. Miller, Oskaloosa, Iowa, and Aaron W. Miller, Marion, Iowa; two daughters, Megan A. Bahls and husband, Ken, Mason City, and Kirsten J. Fleck and husband, Chris, Omaha, Neb.; grandchildren, Courtney Sutton, Jessica, Tiffany and Loren Miller, and Julia, Meira and Isaiah Bahls; two sisters-in-law, Gayle Brownmiller, Aurelia, Iowa, and Donna Miller, Ida Grove, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

Lloyd was born Sept. 6, 1924, in Mason City, the son of J. Fred Stockberger and Mabel Irene Sears. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1943 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Following his discharge, he worked in the family business, Stockberger Transfer & Storage, retiring in 1987 as president of the company.

Lloyd married Vera Rastedt Aug. 22, 1947, in Mason City. Lloyd and Vera spent 13 winters in Apache Junction, Ariz.

He was past counselor in UCT, a lifetime member of the VFW and Firelighters 055. He enjoyed fishing, camping, reading, stamp collecting and traveling.

Lloyd is survived by his wife, Vera, of Mason City; children, Larry Stockberger and his wife, Deb, of rural Nora Springs, Randy Stockberger and his wife, Roxy, of Independence, Ore., Sheryl Green and her husband, Jerry, of Aloha, Ore., and Sue Redfern and friend, Vic LaBass of Clear Lake; 12 grandchildren, one great- grandchild; sisters, Winifred Rasmussen and her husband, Jim, of Mason City, Viola Fisk of Mason City, Ellen Weiss and her husband, Frank, of Mason City, and Betty Clarke of Mason City; brother, George Stockberger and his wife, Mary Lou, of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and twin brothers.

Mabel was born Aug. 23, 1917, in Plymouth, the daughter of Edward Borchardt and Florence Fluher. She attended school at Union No. 7 through the eighth grade.

Florence married Orville C. Hesse Nov. 10, 1938, in Grafton, Iowa. The Hesses farmed together around the Nora Springs area for many years before moving to Mason City in 1988.

She was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church, Church Circle and Altar Guild. She enjoyed gardening, flowers and fishing.

Mabel is survived by a daughter, Karen Ohlmann and her husband, Gary, of Albert Lea, Minn.; a granddaughter; Traci Ohlmann of Eau Claire, Wis.; a brother, Donald Borchardt and his wife, Betty, of Plymouth; and two sisters, Donna Bowling and her husband, Troy, of Marshalltown, and Dora Roberts and her husband, James, of Manly.

Mabel was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, one brother, and her husband, Orville.

MASON CITY - Joan A. Loterbour, 78, of 388 Willowbrook Drive, died Saturday (October 26, 2002) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Private family services will be held at a later date with inurnment in the Elmwood Cemetery Columbarium, Mason City.

Joan was born April 15, 1924, in Des Moines, the daughter of George Andrick and Mary Cattron. She graduated from Mason City High School then married Keith Loterbour on February 11, 1944 in Mason City.

Joan was a long time resident of Mason City.

She is survived by her husband, Keith of Mason City; her children, James Loterbour and his wife, Beverly, of Des Moines, Barbara Jean Rathbun and her husband, Vern, of Tulsa, Okla., and Jon Loterbour of Des Moines; and several grandchildren.

LEWIS VERNON JACOBSON

NORA SPRINGS - Lewis Vernon Jacobson, 92, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Nora Springs, died Sunday (October 27, 2002) at the Silver Pines Nursing Home in Cedar Rapids.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Nora Springs with the Rev. Ruth Hansen officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, rural Rudd, with military honors by the H.D.S. American Legion Post 449 of Nora Springs.

Visitation will held one hour prior to the service time at the church Wednesday. Sheckler Colonial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

The family of Lewis Vernon Jacobson has requested that memorial contributions be made to the St. Luke Lutheran Church in Nora Springs in his memory.

Lewis Vernon Jacobson was born on Oct. 30, 1909, in Gunder, Iowa, the son of John E. and Julia J. (Skarshaug) Jacobson. He was baptized in the East Clermont Lutheran Church in Clermont and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation in the Norway Lutheran Church rural St. Olaf. At an early age he moved with his family to St. Olaf where Lewis got his elementary education. In 1924, he again moved with his family to Clermont where he attended and graduated from high school.

In 1932, he began working with his father in the grocery business in Nora Springs. It was here he met and on July 25, 1935, he was united in marriage to Nina B. Sellon at the Lutheran parsonage in Williams, Iowa, where his older brother was pastor at the time. She preceded him in death in January 1992.

He was inducted into the U.S. Army on July 10, 1942, at Ft. Des Moines and served as an administrative NCO at Ft. Carson, Colo., during World War II until his honorable discharge on October 21, 1945. After his honorable discharge he went back into the grocery business for five years.

In 1951, Lewis and his wife Nina began working at the First State Bank in Nora Springs. He worked at the bank for 25 years and retired as vice president in 1975.

In his banking years, he was a charter member of the Nora Springs Kiwanis Club and served in all the local offices. He worked tirelessly to accomplish a new Lutheran Church building in Nora Springs in 1954 and was active in promoting and getting the new First State Bank building constructed in 1969.

On retirement, they moved to the former Hanford Hotel in Mason City and spent time traveling in the 48 contiguous states, as well as trips to the Holy Land and the Scandinavian countries in 1975, the British Isle in 1977, and the grand tour of Europe in 1978. In late 1978 they moved to Lakeland, Fla., where they lived for three years in a new mobile home park.

In late 1981, they returned to Cedar Rapids because of Nina's cancer condition which she wanted treated at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. She died in January 1992, lacking three days of being married for 56 and a half years.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, St. Luke Lutheran Church in Nora Springs and taught Sunday school for several years. He was a Boy Scout leader in Nora Springs, and a member of Rock Sirius Masonic Lodge No.294-Nora Springs and H.D.S. American Legion Post 449-Nora Springs. He was also on the board of directors at the Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City.

During his long and active life Lewis has maintained a close association with the Lutheran Church and looks forward to a glorious reunion with his loved ones who have preceded him in death, at the feet of his savior and redeemer, Jesus Christ.

Left to cherish his memory is a niece, E. Jane Jones and her husband, Paul, of Cedar Rapids; a nephew, James Lehmkuhl and his wife, Agnes, of Cedar Rapids; several great-nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nina; his parents; two brothers, the Rev. Hiram Jacobson and Clarence Jacobson; and a sister, Grace Lehmkuhl

Ida Emilie Groth was born June 13, 1901, in Barton Township, Worth County, Iowa, to George and Martha (Ruehlow) Belz. She was baptized by the Rev. Johnnes Becker July 7, 1901. She was confirmed by the Rev. John Landdeck April 16, 1916, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton, Iowa. She attended country school in Barton Township in Worth County.

Ida married Henry Groth on Feb. 24, 1924, at her parents' home by the Rev. John Landdeck. This union was blessed with four children.

They lived on a farm northeast of St. Ansgar until 1954. Ida moved into St. Ansgar in 1959. She entered the Good Samaritan Center July 9, 1990.

She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar and a member of Ladies Aid and circle.

Ida is survived by a daughter, Dorothy and her husband, Harlan Sponheim, of St. Ansgar; two sons, Arnold and his wife, Gladys Groth, of St. Ansgar, and Paul and his wife, Barbara Groth, of St. Ansgar; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends at Good Samaritan Center.

The former June Stockwell was born June 10, 1927, in Wesley, Iowa. She married Fred Lassahn June 27, 1945, in Algona, and he preceded her in death in 1982.

CAREL J. OXLEY

MASON CITY - Carel J. Oxley of Mason City, formerly of Kanawha, died at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City, on Monday (Oct. 28, 2002) of complications following vascular surgery. He was 75 years old.

Carel was born Feb. 12, 1927, and lived for most of his youth on the rural Kanawha farm owned by his parents, Clarence and Alma (Schultz) Oxley. As a young man he entered farming with his father.

He served in the United States Army from Oct. 20, 1950, through July 21, 1952, and was awarded the Korean Service Medal.

Following his discharge from the service, on July 25, 1952, he married Phyllis Vestweber, daughter of William and Frances (Baker) Vestweber of Alexander. They later purchased the family farm and were successfully engaged in farming there for more than 40 years. He lived on the farm until moving to Mason City earlier this year.

Carel was a man of many interests and talents, beloved by his family and his many good friends. Following his military service in Korea, he used his GI Bill benefits to become a licensed pilot. He was a skilled mechanic, with an interest in both cars and motorcycles that continued throughout his life. He enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, golf, boating and water skiing. He was an accomplished woodworker who enjoyed restoring antiques. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Corwith and loving father to three daughters and two sons.

Carel was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis in 2000; his parents, Clarence and Alma; his sister, Vivian Oxley Assink; and his brother, Marvin R. Oxley.

He is survived by daughters Sue Oxley and her husband, Eric Paige, of Charlotte, N.C.; Nancy Bauer and her husband, Jeff, of Lake Tomahawk, Wis.; and Betty Zeman and husband, Lenny, of Cedar Falls; and by sons Jeff Oxley of Wilmington, N.C., and Tim Oxley and his wife, Rhonda, of Ft. Meyers Fla.. He is also survived by eight grandchildren.

Services will be held on Thursday at 2 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Corwith, with Pastor Ron Feuerhak officiating. Burial will be in Amsterdam Cemetery, Kanawha.

DIAMONDHEAD, Miss. - Sylvia Petersen Pross, 80, died Monday (Oct. 21, 2002) in Bay St. Louis, Miss.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, at Diamondhead Community Church, Diamondhead, Miss., where the family will receive relatives and friends after the service. There will be a private interment.

Sylvia was a native of Thornton, Iowa, and a resident of New Orleans, La., for 10 years before moving to Diamondhead, Miss., in 1975. She was a graduate of Swaldale High School in 1939 and was queen of the Band Festival.

She was an associate member of the Diamondhead Community Church.

In 1979 she was queen of the Land Mardi Gras. She was secretary for Lanai Condo's Association and for the First Diamondhead POA Board in 1985, served as secretary and treasurer and past president of the Diamondhead Ladies Golf Association. She joined the Diamondhead Volunteer Fire Department and served as Fire Commissioner for 15 years. Sylvia received the Service and Dedication Award from the Diamondhead Fire Protection District in 1994. She helped to start the first Diamondhead phone directory. In 1991 she received the Diamondhead Outstanding Citizen Award.

Sylvia is survived by her husband, W. Darell Pross of Diamondhead, Miss.; her son, Ronald Darell Pross of Kalispell, Mont.; a brother, E. G. Petersen of Proctor, Minn.; two sisters, Norma Salier of Nora Springs, Iowa, and Alma Jansenn of Mason City; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Karen was born Aug. 8, 1943, in Mason City General Hospital, the daughter of Beulah and Richard Fairbanks of Mason City and the late Henry Eichmann. She was baptized at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Mason City, and confirmed at St. James Lutheran Church, Mason City. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1961, attended North Iowa Area Community College and worked at the local telephone company. In later years she completed her schooling at NIACC as a medical transcriptionist.

Karen and Maynard Plagge were united in marriage Sept. 16, 1962, at St. James Lutheran Church and together they raised three children. Karen was employed as a medical transcriptionist at Franklin General Hospital in Hampton the past three years. Prior to that she worked for a large medical facility in Leonardtown, Md., near her youngest child, Shari, and family.

Karen was also a gifted home decorator and had a business in Mason City at one time.

Joel Oris Holtan was born on a farm in Mt. Valley Township, Winnebago County, Iowa, on Aug. 26, 1918, the son of George and Marie (Haugen) Holtan. He received his education in a rural school near his home and attended Waldorf Academy from 1932 to 1936.

He married Genevieve Monson on July 23, 1941, at Winnebago Lutheran Church.

The couple made their home on the Holtan homestead where Joel was born and grew up. He farmed until retiring and moving to Forest City in 1985.

He was an active member of Winnebago Lutheran Church and served in many capacities over the years. He was active in the Republican Party and Farm Bureau.

Music was an important part of Joel's life. He played the harmonica and the saxophone and loved to sing. He shared this talent with others for weddings and funerals. He performed with the Forest City Barbershop Chorus and was part of a quartet for several years. He liked sports and loved watching his grandchildren compete. He was a strong Waldorf supporter and enjoyed attending the association meetings.

Joel is survived by his children and their spouses, JoAnn Tordoff and her husband, Russel, of Glenville, Minn., Noel Holtan and his wife, Joyce, of Forest City, Marlys Andersen and husband, Dean, of Rake, Carole Kettwick and her husband, Mike, of Buffalo Center, and Valere Holtan and his wife, Sandy, of Forest City; 17 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Randy Holland and his wife, Joan, of Albert Lea, Minn.; two brothers, Herbert Holtan of Lake Mills and Boyd Holtan of Core, W.Va.; and a brother-in-law, Lloyd Lovik of Bullhead City, Ariz.

EVANS, Colo. - Yvonne C. Peterson, 64, of Evans, Colo., died Sunday (Oct. 27, 2002) at the Hospice and Palliative Care of Northern Colorado Inpatient Unit.

Mrs. Peterson was born Aug. 12, 1938, in Grand Forks, N.D., to Bert and Grace (Feldman) Surprenant. She married Richard J. Peterson in 1960; they were divorced in 1997.

After graduating from Winona State College with a bachelor's degree in English in 1968, she spent several years as a teacher in the Rochester, Minn., Public School System.

She moved with her family to Colorado in 1977 where she was a substitute teacher for many years. She earned her paralegal certificate from the Denver Paralegal Institute in 1989 and worked at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal until her retirement in 1999.

She was a former member of the Spirit of Christ Catholic Community in Arvada, Colo., before moving to Evans to live with her daughter.

She was a dedicated educator, mother and grandmother who enjoyed playing card games and solving crossword puzzles. She was also an avid reader and loved to watch the Denver Broncos play. She was also very proud of the fact that she had a short story published in a Christian magazine.

She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Dr. Mark Allen and Dawna Peterson, of Carlisle, Pa., Julie and Mike Papini of Evans, Colo., Chris and Jill Peterson of Greeley, Colo., and Erika and Travis White of Wichita, Kan.; seven grandchildren, Nick and Andy Papini, Madi, Thea, Sophie and Jaden Peterson and Taylor Clare White. She is also survived by her two sisters, Roberta Buckingham, of Dodge Center, Minn., and Marcia Francis of Arvada, Colo.; and a brother, Robert Surprenant, of Katy, Texas.

She was an active member of the Center Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Roy Arnold Rensink, the son of William and Jennie (Rensink) Rensink, was born Dec. 23, 1917, at Sheldon, Iowa. He attended elementary school in Fertile and graduated from Forest City High School in 1938. He was in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving his country in Africa and Europe.

On May 29, 1950, he married Wilhemina Formanek at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan. They were the parents of three daughters, Julie, Susan and Mary. On June 28, 1965, his wife, Mina, died.

On July 20, 1969, he married Evelyn Krutsinger at the Methodist Camp at Spirit Lake. They made their home in Garner until April of this year, when they moved to Clear Lake. Roy worked for Nonnweiler and Reichardt, Hansen Hardware in Forest City, Cecil Blank Construction, Millcraft Housing in Clear Lake and also the Garner Creamery.

Roy and Evelyn spent their winters in Mercedes, Texas, for many years. His interests included gardening, woodworking and fishing with his best friend, Bob Haan.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Garner and the Garner VFW Post 5515.

Roy is survived by his wife, Evelyn, of Clear Lake; his daughter, Julie Rensink, of Mason City; stepchildren, Alberta Loveless, of Mason City, Richard Krutsinger and his wife, Harriet, of Clear Lake, Ronald Krutsinger and his wife, Shirley, of Clear Lake, Gail Krutsinger, of Mason City, and Donald Krutsinger of Topeka, Kan.; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Esther Peterson, of Mason City; a brother, Marion Rensink and his wife, Hazel, of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister-in-law, Ramona Rensink, of Hoyt Lake, Minn., and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Wilhemina; two daughters, Susan in infancy and Mary Kaye Rensink; his parents, and three brothers, Edward, Walter and Henry Rensink.

DORIS G. COATS OLSON

MASON CITY - Doris G. Coats Olson, 83, of 1000 N. Eisenhower Ave., died Monday (Oct. 28, 2002) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Memorial services with a celebration of life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Willows, 1000 N. Eisenhower Ave., with the Rev. Jeff Ungs of Galilean Lutheran Church of Clear Lake officiating.

The family suggests memorials to the Doris G. Olson Memorial Fund.

Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, is in charge of arrangements.

Doris was born July 12, 1919, in Wilson County, Kan., the daughter of John Wesley and Opal A. (Polson) Coats. She graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1936, where she played basketball.

She married Donald L. Olson on Oct. 19, 1941, in Lake View. She worked in an airplane factory in Buffalo, N.Y., during World War II and traveled to meet her sailor husband when he was in port from Norfolk, Va., to San Francisco and San Diego.

They moved back to Sac City, Iowa, where they lived and raised their three daughters. In 1972, they moved to West Des Moines, where they lived until 1997 when they moved to the Willows in Mason City.

Doris especially enjoyed spending time with her daughters and families, having coffee time and gabfest with her friends at the Willows, and playing bridge and socializing when living in Sac City.

Doris was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Sac City, Windsor Heights Lutheran Church and Galilean Lutheran Church.

Doris will be sadly missed by her three daughters, Sonnee A. Steveson and her husband Ron, of Ventura, Tamara J. Beschen, of Seattle, Wash., and Laura J. Olson, of Decorah; six grandchildren, Derek Steveson, of Phoenix, Ariz., Jennifer Steveson, of Phoenix, Brooke Beschen of Seattle, Wash., Peter Vanney, Samuel Vanney and Paul Vanney, of Decorah, and brother-in-law, Charles Olson and his wife, Phyllis, Sac City, and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Wayne and Eugene Coats; two sisters, Beverly Goodnight and Phyllis Bly, and her husband, Don, who passed away in May of this year.

MILDRED V. FOSTER

GARNER - Former Garner resident Mildred V. Foster, 88, of Ankeny, died Monday (Oct. 28, 2002) at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Ankeny First United Methodist Church in Ankeny, with the funeral service following at 11 a.m.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Concord Cemetery in Garner.

She is survived by her children, Gloria Eccles, of Tucson, Ariz., Glenda Brady and her husband, Dan, of Ankeny, Richard Foster and his wife, Helen, of Lake View, and Steven Foster and his wife, Nancy, of Mansfield, Texas; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Foster; her parents; two sisters, and one brother.

RACHEL ANN LONG CORWIN HAWKINS

ALBERT LEA, Minn. - Funeral services for Rachel Ann Long Corwin Hawkins will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Church of Christ (Christian) in Albert Lea, with the Rev. Mike Gerhardt officiating. Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery in Clear Lake.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Bonnerup Funeral Service, 525 W. Clark St. in Albert Lea, is in charge of arrangements.

Rachel died on Tuesday (Oct. 29, 2002) at St. John's Lutheran Home in Albert Lea, where she had lived for the past two years, at the age of 95.

Rachel was born on Aug. 14, 1907, four miles south of Mason City, the daughter of Frank and Wilmie Grace (Lillibridge) Long.

At the age of 4, Rachel moved with her family to Rudd, and at age 7, they moved north of Clear Lake. She attended rural schools through the eighth grade and was a graduate of Clear Lake High School. She received normal school training in 1925 and taught rural school for two years.

On June 4, 1927, Rachel was married to Wieland Wickliffe (W.W. "Bill") Corwin. They lived in Clear Lake, Mason City, rural Goodell, back to Clear Lake and then in 1948 to Albert Lea. Bill preceded Rachel in death in 1957.

Following Bill's death, she lived for one year in Harlan, Iowa, and attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City. She moved to Albert Lea, where she worked for Queen Products for 101/2 years, retiring in 1970. She married Harold W. Hawkins on June 30, 1967, and he preceded her in death in 1984.

Rachel grew up in the Mason City Christian Church, where she was baptized into Christ in 1919. She was a charter member of the Clear Lake Christian Church and of the Albert Lea Church of Christ (Christian).

Rachel is survived by two children, Grace McCord and her husband, Lynn, of Harlan, Iowa, and Roger Corwin and his wife, Marge, of St. Louis Park, Minn.; stepdaughter, Rosalie Hawkins, of Minneapolis, Minn.; 19 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Rachel was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Wieland Wickliffe Corwin and Harold W. Hawkins, and two brothers, two sisters, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

LAKE MILLS - John Coffey, 48, formerly of Liberty Square Care Center in Nora Springs, died on Tuesday (Oct. 29, 2002) at the Baum-Harmon Mercy Hospital in Primghar.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills, with graveside services following at Salem Memorial Cemetery in Lake Mills with the Rev. Kevin Mackey officiating.
