GERTRUDE M. PIRKL

MASON CITY-Mrs. Frank (Gertrude M.) Pirkl, 98, of Mason City died Saturday (Oct. 19, 2002) at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 704 N. Adams, Mason City, with Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Private burial services will be held at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City, later in the day.

Visitation will be held today from 5 until 8 p.m. at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St., N.E. with a Rosary to be said at 5:30 p.m. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to the service at Holy Family Catholic Church on Tuesday.

Memorials may be directed to the Gertrude Pirkl Memorial Fund and will be distributed to Holy Family, Francis Lauer Youth Services, and Good Shepherd with amounts to be determined by the family.

Gertrude was born December 21, 1903, in Lawler, Iowa, the daughter of George "Stormy" and Nell Siglin. She graduated from Lawler High School, Mason City Junior College, and Hamilton Business College. Gertrude was united in marriage to Frank B. Pirkl on April 19, 1927, in Lawler.

She worked at the Cerro Gordo County Auditor's Office for twenty-two years, later transferring to the Probation Office and worked with Francis Lauer until her retirement. She and Francis were a compassionate "two-some" in caring for children at Francis Lauer Youth Services. They were instrumental in the establishment of the first Youth Home in 1968 and now, 34 years later, the dream lives on in the FLYS facility.

Gertrude was an avid sports fan. Her favorite teams were the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Minnesota Vikings. She had a special relationship with Tom Davis, former Iowa Hawkeye basketball coach, and because of that received several pieces of Hawkeye sports memorabilia that will be displayed at her visitation.

Gertrude and Frank enjoyed traveling extensively with their friends, Bob and Maddie Finlayson. Bob's sons, Jim and Jon remember so well, Bob (non-Catholic) saying, "Don't ever travel with Frank and Gert during Lent, because everyday, you have to travel miles out of the way to find a town with a Catholic Church."

Having attended Hamilton Business College, they had a reunion for all graduates and Gertrude was honored at a special reception as the oldest living graduate.

Gertrude was a faithful member of Holy Family Catholic Church, St. Therese Circle, and was an active member of the community. However, her greatest interest was the welfare of her family, especially her great-grandson, Brent Greenan-Pannkuk, who resided at North Central Human Services, a home for children and adults with severe disabilities.

Gertrude is survived by her daughter, Mary Frances (Mrs. Wes) Greenan; granddaughter, Mary Beth Greenan and her husband, Mark Hansen; son, Mike Greenan and his wife, Diane (Dee), and their family, all of Mason City. She is also survived by her compassionate caretakers at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; her special great-grandson, Brent Greenan-Pannkuk; several brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews.

CORWITH - Funeral services for Audrey Ann Meyers, 65, of Corwith, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Corwith with the Rev. Dan Fernandez officiating. Interment will be in Corwith Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Corwith with an Eastern Star service at 7:30 p.m. by Algona Chapter No. 68 OES of Algona.

Audrey Ann Leerar Meyers, the daughter of Jake and Vestus Whitehurst Leerar, was born Nov. 23, 1936, at Stilson, Iowa. Audrey attended rural public schools in the Stilson area until the fifth grade and then attended the Corwith Public School in Corwith. She graduated as valedictorian of the very talented class of 1954.

Audrey was employed for a short while at the Lyons Cleaners in Mason City. On Aug. 26, 1955, Audrey was united in marriage to William J. Meyers at the Stilson Evangelical United Brethern Church in Stilson, where she was a member. Audrey and Bill lived in Youngstown, N.Y., from August of 1955 to January of 1957 while Bill was in the Army.

In the spring of 1957, the couple moved to the farm north of Corwith, where they raised their family and resided for 45-plus years.

As we all know, there are givers and takers in society, and certainly Audrey was one of the givers. While her kids were growing up, Audrey was active in their activities, including being a 4-H leader, Girl Scout leader and Band Mother. She shared her many talents by playing the piano and organ, and teaching Sunday School in the First Baptist Church in Corwith.

Audrey also was a member and pianist/organist for the Order of the Eastern Star. She was active in the American Legion Auxiliary in Corwith, the Federated Women's Club and many other community organizations. Upon the closing of the First Baptist Church, Audrey and Bill became members of the United Methodist Church in Corwith.

Audrey enjoyed golfing at the Hillside Golf Course at Wesley, and won many awards and made many new friends there.

Audrey was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1988 and endured many treatments over the last 14 years. We will miss her dearly, but celebrate the fact that, as a devoted Christian, we know she resides now in her heavenly home free from pain and suffering.

Audrey died on Wednesday (Oct. 23, 2002) at the Good Samaritan Center in Algona at the age of 65.

Audrey is survived by her loving husband, Bill; four children and their spouses (her "children-in-law," as she liked to call them) and their families.

Also surviving are many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and many "special" friends that were like family to her.

Audrey was preceded in death by her parents; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, C.B. "Pat" and Rose Meyers, and her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Vance and Carol Halverson.
