WALTER 'BILL' WARBURTON
RICEVILLE - Walter "Bill" Warburton, 77, of Riceville, died Sunday (March 24, 2002) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Lindstrom Funeral Home, 401 E. Main St. in Riceville, with the Rev. Herschel Hawf officiating. Burial will be at the Eddy-Kendallville Cemetery in Kendallville.
Friends may call one hour prior to services on Saturday at the funeral home.
Walter was born on Feb. 19, 1925, in Jamestown Township, Howard County, Iowa, to John and Zeffie (Ford) Warburton. He received his schooling at the Round Grove School.
"Bill" farmed with this father until they moved into Riceville in 1951. He drove a mail route between Riceville and Decorah, worked in maintenance at Luther College and Riceville Community Schools retiring in 1989.
In retirement he enjoyed attending steam engine shows and collecting and watching videos of them.
He is survived by one brother, Dale Warburton and his wife, Kathryn, of Riceville; three sisters, Evelyn Anderson and her husband, Harold, of Riceville, Lois Eidness, of Osage, and Maryetta Mentel, of Waterloo, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; one brother, Harry Warburton; and three sisters, Lenora Gansen, Grace Warburton, and Dolores Lambers.

RICEVILLE - Gail A. Eide, 88, of Riceville, died Sunday (March 24, 2002) at Riceville Community Rest Home.
Her funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Congregational Church in Riceville. Burial will be held at Riverside Cemetery in Riceville.

CLEAR LAKE - Eva Blanche Washburn, 98, 210 W. 10th Ave. N. died Monday (March 25, 2002), at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.
Funeral Services will be held 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at the Regular Baptist Church 314 N. 6th St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Steven Cox officiating. Interment will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake.

Eva was born Nov. 20, 1903, in Albany, Ill., the daughter of William Watson and Carrie Josephine (Mickey) Jones. Eva moved with her parents at an early age to Waterloo, Iowa, and attended West High School.
Eva married Donald E. Washburn on Dec. 8, 1921, at St. Peters, Minn., moving to Mason City and then to Clear Lake in 1928.
Eva enjoyed sewing, handwork and reading. Eva also taught Sunday school for many years.
She was a member of the Clear Lake Regular Baptist Church and a member of Bible Study group since 1962.
Eva is survived by her son, Leonard Washburn and his wife, Geraldine, of Clear Lake; two grandsons, Lowell Washburn and his wife, Carol, of Clear Lake, and Sterling Washburn and his wife, Cindy, of Clear Lake, four great-grandchildren, Matt Washburn, of Clear Lake, Jennifer Stover and her husband, Paul, of St. Louis Park, Minn., Justin Washburn, of Des Moines, and Melissa Washburn, of Ames.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald; two brothers, Teddy and Laveral Jones; and one great-grandson, Travis Washburn.

SULIE A. LOCKWOOD
MASON CITY - Sulie A. Lockwood, 82, of 805 N. Carolina Ave. died Friday (March 22, 2002) at Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave. with the Rev. Bill Poland officiating. Interment will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests Memorials to be made to the Sulie A. Lockwood Memorial Fund.
Sulie was born April 18, 1919 in Mason City, the daughter of Harry and Anna Metrokas. Her aunt and uncle, John and Vasiliki Cazanas raised her. Sulie graduated from Mason City High School in 1937.
On Aug. 27, 1939 Sulie was united in marriage to the love of her life, Richard F. Lockwood.
Sulie was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, the Universal Study Club, Daughters of Penelope, and the Stanton Lodge #658.
Mrs. Lockwood is survived by four children, Brian Lockwood and his wife, Sherry, Richard Lockwood and his wife, Sandra, Jill Simpson, and Sandra Lockwood; three sisters, Mary Pappas, Cynthia Nusias, and Connie Katavates; one brother, Peter Metrokas and his wife, Grace; six grandchildren, (as Sulie would call them her shining lights of her life) Christine In-Alban and her husband, Peter, Charles Lockwood, Sean Simpson and his wife, Mary, Amber Brumm and her husband, Reed, Kelly Leslie and her husband, Lance, and Cory Lockwood; three great-grandchildren, Lance Leslie III, Parker Brumm, and Henry Simpson; her cousin, John Cazanas and his wife, Maryellen, with whom she was raised; their three children, Vicki Siefers and her husband, Dick, and family, Kyle, and Andrea, Penny Cazanas, Joanna Lindley and her husband Scott. She is also survived by a son-in-law Robert Simpson and his wife, Amy; and many nieces and nephews. Sulie's companionship will also be missed by her "Ollie".

RICEVILLE - Genevieve Blake, 69, of Riceville, died Sunday (March 24, 2002) at the Methodist Hospital in Rochester.

OELWEIN - Robert F. Peters, 85, of Oelwein, died Sunday (March 24, 2002) at the Grandview Care Center in Oelwein.
His funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein, with the Rev. Frederick Fangmann officiating. Burial will be in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Fairbank.
Visitation was held on Monday at Woods Funeral Home in Fairbank, with a scripture service at 6 p.m.
Robert F. Peters was born Oct. 4, 1916, in Fairbank to William and Elizabeth (Polege) Peters.
Robert had worked as a custodian at several Catholic schools.
He had lived 12 years in Oelwein and had formerly lived in Mason City, Cedar Rapids and Jakway Park where he had worked for the Buchanan County Conservation.
He is survived by sons, Robert Peters, of Merrifield, Minn., Bill (Nancy) Peters, of Cedar Rapids, and a daughter, Carol (Lenard) Hamand, of Nora Springs; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Irene Walker, of Oelwein.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Peters, on July 13, 1998; daughter, Mary; and two grandsons.

DENISE MADONNA LOVIK
NORA SPRINGS - Denise Madonna Lovik, 41, of Nora Springs, died Sunday (March 24, 2002) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City officiating.
Friends may call one hour prior to service time on Wednesday at the chapel.
According to her wishes, her body was cremated.
Denise Madonna Lovik was born on July 1, 1960, in Mason City, the daughter of Don and Eloise (Hockensmith) Abbott. She attended and received her education in the Mason City Schools, graduating from Mason City High School in 1978. Denise also attended and graduated from La' James College of Hairstyling and Cosmetology in Mason City in 1979.
She was united in marriage to Timothy Lovik.
During her life, Denise worked for Wal-Mart, and Air Care Inc. in Mason City, and also worked for Nora Springs Community Schools in the cafeteria, and for the Nora Springs Care Center.
She enjoyed reading, soap operas on TV, flowers, and gardening, but her great love and enjoyment were children.
She was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Mason City.
Left to cherish her memory are her parents, Don and Eloise Abbott, of Mason City; a daughter, Skye Lee Lovik, of Nora Springs; three brothers, Donald Abbott and his wife, Kathy, of Colorado Springs, Colo., David W. Abbott, of Hemet, Calif., and Dennis Abbott and his wife, Sheral, of Clear Lake; three nieces, five nephews; two great-nieces; many cousins; and many special friends.
Her maternal and paternal grandparents, and one nephew preceded her in death.

CHARLES CITY - Carole (Mrs. Robert) Fenton, 59, of 901 18th Ave., died Saturday (March 23, 2002) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Her funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at the First Congregational Church in Charles City, with the Rev. Greg Lugn officiating. There will be an opportunity to share memories during the service.

SALEM, Ore. - Iola Ruth Tohill, 81, of Salem, Ore., formerly of Mason City, Iowa, died Friday (March 22, 2002) at the Salem Memorial Hospital.
A graveside service will be held at 9:30 am on Thursday at Oakwood Cemetery, Plymouth, with the Rev. Robert Cumings of the Bethel United Methodist Church of Manly, officiating.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 Spring St. in Manly.
Iola was born May 8, 1920, in Hopedale, Ill., the daughter of Lynn and Gladys (Grady) DeVore. She married Charles Richard Tohill on Aug. 31, 1935, at Rockville, Ind.
They farmed in Illinois and Iowa, moving to Oregon in 1960. Upon retirement in 1980, Iola and Richard had a business of handcrafted miniature furniture, Tohill's Miniatures, until Richard's death in 1988.
She enjoyed time with friends, working on crafts, picnics, working with her computer and watching professional golf.
Iola was a member of Salem Christian Center and Gresham Chapter #117 Order of Eastern Star.
She is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Tietjens, of Manly and Wanda Shearer, of Salem, Ore.; a sister, Betty Walsh of Decatur, Ill.; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
Iola was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, C. Richard; two sisters and two brothers; and a son, Charles Richard Jr.

HAZEL R. BEST
MASON CITY - Hazel R. Best, 94, of Mason City, died Saturday (March 23, 2002) at Good Shepherd Health Care Center.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. today at the Wayside Chapel at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Jeff Dahlin officiating. Burial will be 1 p.m. today in the Osage Cemetery.
There will be no public visitation as her body was cremated.
Memorials can be made to First United Methodist Church in Mason City.
Hazel R. Best was born July 11, 1907, in Forbes, N.D., the daughter of Joe and Caroline (Kraus) Sedlacek. At age one, her family moved to St. Ansgar, where Hazel was baptized and confirmed at the St. Ansgar Methodist Church and where she attended high school, graduating in 1925. After graduation, she helped with the family business and did correspondence work with the Gates Business School in Waterloo.
Hazel was married to Claude A. Best on October 2, 1932, in Albert Lea, Minn. The couple lived in St. Ansgar for five years, Osage for a couple of years and then moved to Mason City in 1941. Claude worked as a carpet, tile, and Formica layer while Hazel served as his secretary and sold Tupperware.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Mason City and a former member of its Ladies Aid as well as Mason City Woman's Club.
Hazel was a lifelong lover of music, especially band music, and attended 60 North Iowa Band Festival parades.
Surviving family members include sons; Clarence A. Best of Madison, Wis., Jerold A. Best and wife, Judy, of Iowa City; grandsons, Bradley, Brandon, Blair, and Terry; granddaughters, Denise and Brenda; five great-grandchildren, and a cousin in California.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Claude, and a sister, Mabel.

CHARLES CITY - Roy Majewski, 84, of 201 First Ave., died Tuesday (March 26, 2002) at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Monsignor Stanley Hayek, officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

ROCKFORD - Luella M. (Mrs. Clarence) Pennington, 97, of Rockford, died on Friday (March 22, 2002) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Anna Luella Martin was born Aug. 30, 1904, on a farm near Floyd. She attended Floyd schools and joined the Floyd Methodist Church in 1914; she attended Upper Iowa University and Gates Business College and worked for New York Life.
She married Clarence R. Pennington on Feb. 24, 1928. They farmed their land north of Rockford from 1928 until retiring. She joined the Rockford Methodist Church after coming to the farm. She resided at the Rockford Manor for several years and later lived at the Nora Springs Care Center.
She enjoyed traveling with the Heritage Club, was active with the UMW, card parties, cooking, needle work and community activities.
Living family members include two sons, Charles Pennington and his wife, Wilma, from Las Vegas, Nev., and Bruce Pennington and his wife, Shirley, from Rudd; one daughter, Edith Smith, from Merritt Island, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Clarence Pennington, Linda Johnsen, Mary Jennings, Brenda Pennington/Sapienza, Janne Etz, Greg Chambers, Julie Westerndorf, Cindy Snell; 11 great-grandchildren, Adam, Joshua and Seth Torgerson, Melissa and John Chambers, Ricky Etz, Laura, Patrick and Nathan Snell, Elizabeth and Sarah Westerndorf.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Scherf and Jessie Driggers; one granddaughter, Debra Ann Pennington and a great-granddaughter, Andrea Snell.

HAZEL CROOKS
NEW HAMPTON - Hazel Crooks, 84, of New Hampton, died Tuesday (March 26, 2002) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient in Mason City after an eight year battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Hampton, with the Rev. Carl Schmitt officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in New Hampton.
Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in New Hampton, where there will be a 4 p.m. combined Catholic Daughters of the Americas and Rosary Society rosary and a 7 p.m. Scripture service. Visitation will also be an hour prior to services at the church.
Hazel Arlene Crooks was born June 18, 1917, at Alta Vista, Iowa, the daughter of Herman and Christine (Erion) Dopp. She received her education in Alta Vista, graduating from the Alta Vista Public School.
After her schooling, she lived with Rita and Clarence White working as a housekeeper and taking care of their children. She then went to work for Gerald Crooks as a bookkeeper at Crooks Implement in Alta Vista.
On Oct. 24, 1946, she married Gerald F. Crooks in Waterloo. The couple resided in Alta Vista and continued to operate the implement company together until their retirement in 1971.
The couple then moved to the Smith Century Farm north of New Hampton where they resided until Gerald's death in 1996. Hazel then moved to New Hampton where she was currently residing.
She was a member of the Alta Vista VFW Auxiliary, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court Joan of Arc #388, St. Joseph Church, and the Rosary Society. She was also active in the Cancer Support group in New Hampton.
She enjoyed playing bridge and 500 as well as traveling.
Hazel is survived by two daughters, Cheryl (Luke) Madsen, of Brooklyn Park, Minn., Denise (Bill) Brinker, of Maplewood, Minn.; three sons, Craig (Jan) Crooks, of Mason City, James (Laurie) Crooks, of Minco, Okla., Kevin (Debbie) Crooks of Alta Vista; 12 grandchildren, Kelly MacMaster Lind, Kristina MacMaster, Robert MacMaster, Ryan Crooks, Adam Crooks, Jared Crooks, Crystal Hacker, A.J. Hacker, Daniel Crooks, Katie Crooks, Sydney Brinker, and Alyson Brinker; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Gerald F. Crooks (June 21, 1996); a half brother, Alvin Wismer, and a daughter-in-law, Janine Crooks.

ALYCE E. BAKKUM
OSAGE - Alyce E. Bakkum, 87, of Riceville and formerly of Osage, died Monday (March 25, 2002) at the Riceville Community Rest Home in Riceville.
Alyce was born May 20, 1914, at Valva, N.D., the daughter of August and Hannah (Weckwerth) Holmquist. She was baptized in the Parkview United Methodist Church at Milbank, S.D., where she grew up.
She later moved to Iowa where she married John L. Bakkum on Jan. 3, 1933. They spent most of their married life in the Mitchell and Howard County areas until they moved to Cedar Rapids in 1977.
They moved back to Riceville in 1989 to be closer to their children. John L. Bakkum died on Dec. 23, 1989.
Alyce worked as an egg candler at the Cedar Valley Produce Company and the Farmers Produce Company in Osage and for the Salvation Army in Cedar Rapids until she retired.
She enjoyed crocheting, tatting, reading, flowers, TV, spending time with her children and grandchildren, and in her younger days fishing, playing cards and cribbage. Her dog, Snoopy, was her constant companion.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at the United Methodist Church, 308 Woodland in Riceville with the Rev. Mike Carey officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Osage Cemetery.
A time of fellowship with a light lunch will follow the memorial service at the church.
Those left to cherish her memory include three daughters, Loma Roske and husband, Floyd, of Riceville, Jacqueline Lack and husband, Robert M., of Osage, and Sandra Shultz and husband, Leland, of Panama City, Fla.; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren and six stepgrandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, John L. Bakkum in 1989; one son, John A in 1997; one granddaughter, Laurene Wilcox in 1976; one grandson, Dennis Lack in 1976; and five brothers and three sisters.

MASON CITY - Paul W. Behm, 95, of Mason City, died on Sunday (March 24, 2002) at Good Shepherd Health Center.
Memorial Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 100 First St. N.E., with the Rev. Richard D. Scheerer officiating.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. His body was donated to University of Iowa Department of Anatomy.

Paul W. Behm was born July 2, 1906, in St. Joseph, Mo. the son of Fred C. and Linnie M. (Barnett) Behm. He was a 1923 graduate of Modale High School in Modale. He went on to further his education at Creighton University, graduating with a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in 1927.
He moved to Chicago, Ill., where he was a part of the Chicago Dance Band. His career then took him to Plentywood, Mont., where he was a teacher.
He returned to Iowa where he took a teaching and band position in Logan. While living in Logan he met and married Marjorie R. Logan. The ceremony took place July 18, 1932.
Later he went on to further his education at Vandercook School of Music in Chicago, Ill. He also graduated with a Master's Degree in Science from University of Southern California.
His love for music and teaching led him to several directors' positions including Grinnell and Iowa City before making Mason City their home in 1950. He retired from his position at Mason City High School in 1971.
Following his retirement he became self-employed as a piano technician.
His incredible talent led him to receive the MacAllister Award in 1962, which is the highest honor presented to a school band director in the United States.
He was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, past president of the Iowa Band Director's Association, life member of the Iowa State Education Association, past president of the Iowa Music Educators Association and one of seven Iowans elected to the American Bandmasters Association. One of his most cherished honors was being named Grand Marshall of the Iowa Band Festival in 1972.
In addition to his love for music he also enjoyed golfing, fishing, reading and playing chess.
He is survived by his sons, Gary Behm, of Billings, Mont., Dennis Behm and wife Kaylene of Hattiesburg, Miss., and Chuck Behm and wife, Pat, of Boone; grandchildren, Richard Behm, Tracy Mquerry, Jason Behm, Katie Behm and Kylie Behm; grandchildren, Logan and Dillon Mquerry; sister, Anna Marie Dawson of Wilmington, Del.
His parents, his beloved wife of 66 years; Marjorie, one grandchild, two brothers; Clarence and Francis preceded him in death.

FOREST CITY - Gunder Peter Konrad "Pete" Hanna was born March 25, 1917, at Forest City, Iowa,to Gunder G. and Christina (Bartelson) Hanna and died Thursday (March 21, 2002) at home in Sun City, Ariz.
He is survived by his wife, Edith; son, Philip and his wife, Janet; and twin granddaughters, Denise and Diane Hanna, of Phoenix, Ariz.; and one sister, Florence Jenson, of Marietta, Ga.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Myrtle "Billie" Bellis; stepsisters, Esther Bartleson, Dorothy Bartleson, Bertha Smith and Agnes Stohl; and stepbrother, Gisley Hanna.
He served in the U.S. Navy from May 23, 1942, to Sept. 24, 1945, at various duty stations in the United States and combat duty in Atlantic and the South Pacific war zones including New Guinea area in Flotilla 8, 7th Amphibious Fleet.
He previous worked for WCF&N Bus Company in Waterloo and moved to Denver, Colo. in 1953. He was employed by PIE, Navajo and Time DC trucking firms while living in Denver.
He moved to Phoenix, Ariz., in 1976 and was employed by Automotive Sales & Service until his retirement in 1979.
He was an active member in the NARFE, Chapter 1686 and was past chapter president for one year.
His funeral will be held at 1 p.m. today at Sunland Lakeside Chapel, 15826 Del Webb Blvd., Sun City, Ariz.

FOREST CITY - Melvin C. Anderson, 85, of Forest City, died Monday (March 25, 2002) at the Heritage Care Center in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with the Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating. Burial will be at Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St., Forest City.
Melvin Charles Anderson was born July 1, 1916, in Sanborn, Minn., to Lewis and Augusta (Thram) Anderson. Due to the death of his mother, when he was 3 1/2 years old he came to Forest City to live with his grandmother, Sina Anderson Swanson. He attended Ellington No. 2 rural school and then worked for various farmers until March of 1941. He then served his country during World War II. Much of that time was spent in the Philippines and New Guinea. He was discharged in December of 1945. From then until 1958 he was employed at Kamish Ford of Forest City.
On Jan. 1, 1948, he married Ardis Rasmussen at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple established their home in Forest City and lived there for 54 years. In 1958, he began working for the city of Forest City at the Municipal Power Plant, from which he retired after 20 years of service. He was a member of the Forest City American Legion Post 121. He was a gentle, quiet man whose first concern was caring for his family.
Survivors include his wife, Ardis, of Forest City, and four children: Charles and wife, Marcia, of Merriam, Kan., Dale and wife, Daynine, of Le Mars, Gale and husband, Peter Jensen, of Forest City, and Joe and wife, Tami, of Mason City. He also is survived by his grandchildren, Cindy and Steve Peterson of Forest City, Shaun and fiancee, Becky, of Overland Park, Kan., Jennifer and Jim David of Littleton, Colo., Heather and Chad Scott of Royersford, Pa., Jerrod Jensen of Minneapolis, Minn., Trisha and Joel Stevens of Sioux City, Melinda Anderson of Le Mars and Ian Anderson; and great-grandchildren Drew, Quintin and Alexa Peterson of Forest City.
Melvin was preceded in death by his grandparents, his parents and a half-brother, Arthur.

AHMERST, Mass. - Harold David Voy, 71, of Amherst, Mass., died Jan. 13 (2002) at his home after a long battle with cancer.
A memorial service was held on January 26th in Amherst.
Harold was born on October 16, 1930, in Ackley to David August Voy and Alice (Stauffacher) Voy.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. For the past 30 years, he worked as a motivational speaker.
He leaves his surviving wife, Carol (Cleveland) Voy; two sons, Derek Voy of Los Angeles and Scott Voy of Iowa City; two daughters, Lisa Hughes of Grandbury, Tex., and Deanna Parlante of Revere, Mass.; a twin brother, Kermit Voy of Hampton; three sisters, Yolanda Bauman of Chicago, LaVonne Cropley of Garner and Iva Heki of Urbandale; six grandschildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Donald Edward Jackson was born on June 8, 1920, in Dumont, the son of Ed and Clara (Wendt) Jackson. He was raised in the Dumont and Bristow areas, graduating from Bristow High School.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.
He was united in marriage to Elsie Minnier on Nov. 8, 1942, in Bristow.
He retired as the Hampton city street commissioner.
He was a member of the Faith Baptist Church. He belonged to the Disabled American Veterans and was a member of the American Legion.
Donald enjoyed fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.

Nina Andrews was born July 31, 1905, in LaJunta, Colo., the daughter of Walter T. and Gracia (Bailey) Andrews. Following her mother's death, the family moved to Waterloo to be closer to Walter's family. She was raised by her father, Walter, and grandmother, Emma Andrews.
Nina was a 1924 graduate of East Waterloo High School, and went on to further her education at the Iowa State College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts. She graduated with a bachelor's degree and a teaching certificate in English and home economics in 1929.
While attending Iowa State, she joined Chi Omega sorority and was the first member initiated in the still existing and then new sorority house. After college, she taught English and coached girl's basketball in Guttenburg, Iowa.
While teaching in Guttenburg, she met and married Raymond T. "Ray" Andrews on Oct. 4, 1930, in Rockford, Ill.
Ray's career took them to many towns throughout Iowa before they made Mason City their home in 1945. Ray started Andrews Concrete Company with plants in Mason City and Clear Lake.
In their later years, they became worldwide travelers. Memorable trips took them to Africa, India, the Middle East and South America, including the Galapagos Islands. A favorite was repeated trips to Alaska to visit her daughter.
Nina was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Leah church circle. She was the first president of the Girl Scout Council of North Iowa and president of the Mason City High School Band Mothers.
She was also a member of the Mason City Saddle Club, Trail Riders Club, the Jolly Timers Dance Club, the Maria Mitchell Study Club, the Home Economics Club and the DZ Chapter of the PEO.
Nina was well known by her many friends for her graciousness and eagerness to help anyone in time of need. She loved animals of all sizes, including the ducks and geese she looked forward to feeding around their home in Willowbrook. Her favorite color was pink, which was expressed in the color of her home and often in her choice of clothing.
She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her including her son, Raymond T. "Andy" Andrews Jr. and wife, Barbara, of Clear Lake; daughter, Jane E. Aspnes and husband, John, of Fairbanks, Alaska; and grandchildren, Valerie Wareham and husband, Robert, of Park Ridge, Ill., Aaron Andrews and wife, Kristin, of Mason City, and Rebecca Pedelty and husband, Don, also of Mason City.
She will also be greatly missed by her great-grandchildren Kristina, Jeremy and Blake Wareham, Mitchell, Michael, Christopher and Lauren Andrews and Jonah, Samuel and Jacob Pedelty; and many extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, husband of 65 years, daughter, Elizabeth Ann, and an infant brother.

Ann, the daughter of
Frederick August and Louise Hageman Siemer, was born Sept. 12, 1914, in Wesley, Iowa. She grew up in the Wesley area and graduated from Wesley High School as the valedictorian of the class of 1932.
She was united in marriage with Bernard A. "Ben"
Arndorfer on Sept. 14, 1937, in Wesley, and they made their home in St. Benedict. In 1939, they moved to the Britt area, where they farmed together until 1972.
Ann and Ben moved into Britt in 1974. Their lives were dedicated to their family.
Ann was always busy. She enjoyed needlework, gardening and floral design. Ann was a talented and avid cook. She was continually experimenting with new recipes and feeding family and friends. Ann enjoyed playing cards and board games - she was a natural winner. She was also a natural teacher, sharing her many skills with family and friends.
Ann was a long-time active member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, serving through leadership in the Rosary Guild and Catholic Daughters of the Americas. For the past 13 years, she had served as sacristan and florist for the church.
Ann is survived by two sons, Jerrold R. and wife, Ann, of Spokane, Wash., and James D. and wife, Linda, of Britt; four daughters, Mary A. Place and husband, Gregory, of Rochester, Minn., Janice L. Beckman and husband, James, of Worthington, Minn., Janet L. Steenlage and husband, Les, of Coralville, and Karen L. MASON CITY - Josephine Howe, 100, of 21 Lakeview Drive, died Tuesday (March 26, 2002) at USA Health Care.

Josephine was born Aug. 2, 1901, in Kossuth County, near Buffalo Center, the daughter of Kingsbury and Anna Belle (Tulley) Howe.
She graduated from Greene High School in 1919, attended the University of Iowa and completed her bachelor's degree at the University of Colorado in 1953.
Josephine's entire professional life was devoted to teaching. Prior to coming to Mason City in 1945, she taught in Fertile, Lansing, Cresco and Boone. In Mason City, she taught fifth grade at Washington, Harding and Lincoln schools.
She was active in educational organizations, serving as an officer for the North Central ISEA Classroom Teachers, and was also a longtime member of Delta Kappa Gamma, international honorary fraternity for women educators.
Josephine was a great lover of the out-of-doors and nature in general and owned a cabin in northern Minnesota for more than six decades.
She was a steadfast friend, not only to humans, but to animals as well, particularly to the family dogs, Bandi, Daisy and Skyler.
Josephine is survived by nieces, Virginia Brinkman and Evelyn Jensen, and a nephew, Alton Howe, all of Charles City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Charles, Harry, Earl, John and Robert (in infancy); and nephews, Kenneth, Wilbur, Clyde and Robert Howe; and a niece, Florence Poe.
There will be visitation one hour prior to services today.

John Eric Tenold was born on May 28, 1946, in Albert Lea, Minn., to Glenn O. and Mable (Huso) Tenold. He was confirmed at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood. He attended public school through the third grade and then was home schooled by Marcele Pitts for five years. John enjoyed riding his three-wheel bicycle around the block at his home with his mother.
John entered the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northood 12 years ago.
He was preceded in death by his father, Glenn O. Tenold, and his sister, Nancy.
Survivors include his mother, Mable Tenold of Northwood; three sisters, Suzanne Olson and her husband, Jerry, of Northwood, Sally Anderson and her husband, Bill, of Minneapolis, and Kim Hagen and her husband, Gene, of Northwood; nieces and nephews, Joel Anderson, Randine Anderson, Kym Thorson, Kory Olson, Karl Radman, Kristy Lilly, Kyle Hagen and Kristofer Hagen; and 11 great-nieces and great-nephews.

CLEAR LAKE - Ben C. Lowman, 81, of Clear Lake, died Wednesday (March 27, 2002) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the First Congregational Church, 205 W. 10th Ave. N. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Thomas Healey officiating.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of services on Saturday at the church.

Ben C. Lowman was born on Oct. 10, 1920, in Estherville, the son of Roy and Bessie (Crane) Lowman. He graduated from Clear Lake High School and also attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids.
Ben was inducted into the U.S. Navy on Nov. 23, 1942, where he taught electronics until his honorable discharge on Nov. 18, 1945.
He was united in marriage to Helen Mary Kellogg on March 27, 1943, in Kahoka, Mo. During his life Ben worked for Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids, Singer Sewing Co. in San Marcos, Calif., and was self-employed in electronics in San Marcos, before his retirement moving to Clear Lake.
He enjoyed golfing and fishing.
He attended the First Congregational Church in Clear Lake, and was a member of the Clear Lake Country Club.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Helen Lowman, of Clear Lake; children, Kim Lowman, of Santa Fe, N. M., Terry Lowman and his wife, Diane, of San Diego, Locke Lowman and his wife, Vicki, of San Marcos, Calif., Lin Fessler and her husband, Brad, of Clear Lake, Kelly Gustelum and her husband, Rudy, of Oceanside, Calif., Jan Shaffer of Owatonna, Minn., and Roy Lowman of Opportunity Village in Clear Lake; 18 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; a sister, Marvis Tideback, of Aitkin, Minn., and a brother, Vic Lowman and his wife, Mary, of Phoenix, Ariz.; as well as other relatives and friends.

Bernice V. Hill was born Jan. 9, 1905, in Ashton, S. D., the daughter of Emmett E. and Anna (Hanson) Payne. Their family later moved to Aberdeen, S. D., where she graduated from Aberdeen High School. She went on to further her education at Northern Normal School in Aberdeen.
She was united in marriage to John F. Hill on Sept. 7, 1930, in Aberdeen. In 1940 John's work took them to Davenport, where they lived for five years before making Mason City their home.
She worked as a secretary at Consolidated Foods for 19 years. She retired in 1963. Following John's death in 1990 she moved to Clear Lake to be closer to her family.
She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Mason City, Eastern Star, White Shrine, and Women's Church Fellowship.
She was a loving grandmother and mother. Her grandchildren remember her love for baking and just how lucky they were to receive all the finished products. In addition to baking she enjoyed reading, playing cards and crocheting. Above all, the time spent with her family was the most precious to her.
Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Bruce E. MASON CITY - Robert "Bob" E. Lee, 59, of Mason City, died Wednesday (March 27, 2002) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Robert "Bob" E. Lee was born Dec. 14, 1942, in Belmond, the son of Paul and Marian (Studebaker) Lee. He was a 1961 graduate of Belmond High School in Belmond. Following graduation, Bob enlisted in the United States Army and served his country, learning to become a rifle marksman until his discharge.
Bob was united in marriage on Sept. 11, 1965, in Belmond, to Patricia "Pat" Ulrich. They made their home in Mason City.
Bob was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church.
Some of his hobbies included watching NASCAR, bowling, hunting, fishing, playing cards, listening to country western music and an occasional game of cribbage.
He loved his grandchildren but did not have enough knees to bounce them on. His sense of humor and his many jokes will be missed by those who knew him

MASON CITY - Robert W. Nasheim Jr.,71, of Mason City, died Tuesday (March 26, 2002) at his home.
Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 2502 S. Jefferson Ave., with the Rev. Joel Dahlen officiating. According to his wishes his body was cremated.

Robert W. Nasheim Jr. was born Feb. 9, 1931, the son of Robert W. Sr. and Eva Elizabeth (Kopps) Nasheim. He was a 1949 graduate of Mason City High School. Following graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving his country for four years before enlisting in the United States Merchant Marines.
While serving in the Air Force, he was stationed at Fort Myers in Arlington, Va., where he met his wife, Shirley Schuster. They were united in marriage on Dec. 7, 1951, in Baltimore, Md. They returned to Mason City in 1953.
He had a reputation as a hardworking, dependable, honest and industrious person. He retired at age 57.
He was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, NRA and the Mason City Rifle and Pistol Club. He was a well known fisherman throughout the area. A few of his prized catches included a 54-inch, 32-pound Muskie in northern Wisconsin, which was the largest catch of the year and a 70-pound paddlefish caught in Yellowstone River in Montana. He passed his fishing knowledge on to his two sons and their children.
Besides fishing he enjoyed hunting. He looked forward to bear and moose hunts in Canada and antelope and mule deer hunts in Montana.
He will be remembered as an exceptional grandfather, father and husband. He loved each and everyone of his grandsons and especially enjoyed the time spent with his youngest grandson, Nick. He always found the time to play games and spend time with him. He also enjoyed attending auctions and flea markets looking for a good find, playing the guitar and following the Iowa Hawkeyes.
His memory will be cherished forever by those who knew and loved him, including his wife of 50 years, Shirley Nasheim, of Mason City; sons, Robert W. Nasheim III, of Glendive, Mont., and Ronald W. Nasheim, of Mason City; daughter-in-law, Margie (Clausen) Nasheim of Glendive, Mont.; grandsons, Robert W. Nasheim IV and wife, Julie, of Belgrade, Mont., Michael A. Nasheim of Las Vegas, Timothy J. Nasheim, of Fargo, N. D., Wade A. Nasheim, of Johnston, Nick R. Nasheim, of Plymouth; goddaughter, Tanya Kopps, of Cologne, Germany; and sister, Donna R. Shrma and husband, Ron, of Cedar Rapids.

LYLE, Minn. - Esther Louise Nelson, 92, of Lyle, Minn., died Thursday (March 28, 2002) at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.
She was born on March 24, 1910, to Peter Henry and Minnie (Sievert) Fahje in Elkton, Minn., where she resided until 1914, when the family moved to Kenmare, N.D.
Esther married Francis L. Nelson on Sept. 6, 1936, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Kenmare. They moved to Lyle, Minn., in 1938, where they have lived until the present time.
Esther enjoyed quilting, cooking and baking and was a member of WELCA at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Lyle.
She held offices including president of Lyle Study Club and Woodbury Willing Workers.

Carol L Wilson was born Nov. 19, 1938, in Austin, Minn., the daughter of Harold R. and Helen (Miller) Miller. She graduated from Austin High School. She lived in California and Arizona before making Mason City her home. She was united in marriage to Claire Wilson on June 8, 1964, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Mason City. She worked for 15-plus years in the phone room at Mid-West Construction before retiring early due to health reasons.
She was a former member of the VFW auxiliary. She loved to sew, make ceramics and crochet. Her most memorable moments where spent with her family, especially her grandchildren.
She will be missed by all who knew and loved her including her sons Raland Holding, of Mason City, Marvin Holding and wife, Lora, of Mason City, Charles Wilson and special friend, Jerolyn Pirie, of Mason City; step-daughters Sandy Stevens, of Mason City, Denise Wilson, of Mason City; grandchildren, Chad Wilson, Nicole West, Natalie Holding, Natasha Holding, Jessup Wilson, and Devon Wilson; brothers Harold Leon Miller and wife, Robin, of California, Richard Wayne Miller and wife, Marilyn, of Mason City; sister Wilma Jean Young, of Columbus, Ohio; nephew Leroy and Rose Miller, of Mason City; great nieces Lisa and Lori Miller, of Mason City.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

BANCROFT - Wilfred Elzia "Bill" Woltz, 80, of Burt, died Saturday (March 30, 2002) in Elmore, Minn.
Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m., Tuesday at the Presbyterian Church in Burt, with the Rev. Roland Emond officiating. Interment will be in Burt Township Cemetery.

DR. ANTHONY W. MCGUIRE
MASON CITY - Dr. Anthony W. McGuire, 90, of 503 S. Tennessee Place, Mason City, died Thursday (March 28, 2002) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Family Catholic Church, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill of Holy Family CatholicChurch officiating. Burial is at Memorial Park Cemetery with full military rites from the Mason City Memorial Association.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with a wake service at 7:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Hospice.
Dr. McGuire (Mac) was born March 3, 1912, at Cherokee, son of Anthony (Andy) McGuire and Anne Teresa (Whalen) McGuire. In 1913 they moved to Primghar, where his parents accepted the position of superintendent and matron of the O'Brien County Farm and Care Facility, positions they held for more than 25 years.
He attended school at Primghar elementary and high schools. He was very proud of being the star running back on the Primghar High School's undefeated football team for three years in 1928, 1929 and 1930. He was Notre Dame's number one fan, but also was a sports fan for the Creighton Bluejays, Iowa Hawkeyes, Minnesota Vikings and the Denver Broncos.
After graduation from Creighton University Dental School, he began the practice of dentistry in Emmetsburg in December of 1937. He married Catherine Marice Campbell on Feb. 8, 1941. Early in 1942 he was called into service in the Army Dental Corps where he served in the Oral Surgery Dept. at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He was assigned to the 32nd Signal Combat Battalion in 1943 as an Assistant Battalion Surgeon at Camp Crowder, Mo. and shortly afterward shipped overseas to England. He served with distinction as a captain with his unit in the June 1944 invasion of France, Battle of the Bulge and the Liberation of Buchenwald Concentration Camp in Germany. He was awarded five combat ribbons, a bronze medal and the French Liberty Medal from the French Consulate.
After returning to the United States in late 1945, he and his wife, Catherine Marice, and three- year-old son, James, lived in Mason City where he established a dental practice in the Brick and Tile Building in Mason City. He retired in 1983.
He was a member since 1946 of the St. Joseph (Mercy Medical Center) medical staff, honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus and Cerro Gordo County Cancer Society, life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars as well as the American Legion, a member for 44 years of the Exchange Club, served in the Knights of Columbus as the local Grand Knight, District Deputy for two terms, state delegate to the national convention, and state membership chairman. He served as p resident of the County and District Dental Society and as state membership chairman of Iowa Dental Society. He was a life member of the Elks Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Marice McGuire, of Mason City; son James P. McGuire and wife, Mary, of Clear Lake; daughter Kathleen Rubin and husband, Larry, of Denver, Colo.; daughter Nancy McGuire-Costello and husband, Kevin, of Denver Colo.; seven grandchildren and three great- grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

ROBERT HERMAN ORTMAN
CHARLES CITY - Robert Herman Ortman, 82, of 800 8th St., Charles City, died Thursday (March 28, 2002) at Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 South Main St., Charles City, with the Rev. Curt Schneider officiating. Interment will be held in Sunnyside Memory Gardens.
Visitation will be held from 5 until 8 p.m. Monday at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City, and will continue one hour before the service at the church.

Robert Herman Ortman was born Jan.14, 1920, in Guttenburg, Iowa, the only son of Fred and Alma (Geuder) Ortman. While he was still a young boy his family moved to Charles City. He attended the Charles City School District schools and later graduated in 1937.
On Oct.11, 1941, Robert was united in marriage to Laura Maulsby in Charles City. To this union were born twins, Kay Allene and Kent Allen. Robert was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
Robert was an avid sportsman who enjoyed playing basketball, running track, and playing baseball in high school. He loved being in the great outdoors, trapping, and hunting, especially birds. His great passion was golf, which he started playing as a young boy when he caddied at Wildwood Golf Course.
Robert enjoyed gardening, especially experimenting with new plants and propagating plants. He also enjoyed remodeling and decorating houses and doing woodworking.
Robert had a short employment with Sherman Nursery, then became employed at Salsbury-Solvay. He began working at Salsbury in 1939 and retired 46 years later in 1985. In 1953, Robert was transferred to Atlanta, Ga. to open a new branch for Salsbury. He returned to Charles City in 1988.
Robert was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church and was very active in many of the church activities.
In Robert's final years he was stricken with Parkinson Disease.
He will be sadly missed by his wife Laura; children, Kent Ortman and his wife, Rada, of Navarre, Fla., Kay Lutts and her husband, Terry, of Denver, Colo.; four grandchildren, Robert Ortman and his wife, Vicki, Judi Locke and her husband, Stephen, all of Jonesboro, Ark, Laura-Lee Ault and her husband, Alex, and Ashley Lutts, all of Denver, Colo.; two great- grandsons; two great- granddaughters; two sisters, Olga Bungum, of Austin, Minn., and Bernice McConnell, of Webster City.
Mr. Ortman was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Miriam Kientop; and three nephews.

ALLEGRA MAE SMITH
OSAGE - Allegra Mae Smith, 83, of Osage, died Friday (March 29, 2002) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.
Allegra was born in Lawler on Dec. 11, 1918, the daughter of George and Carrie (Vesper) Power. She grew up in Elma and attended Elma Schools. She was united in marriage to John "Jack" A. Smith on Oct. 10, 1937, in Osage. They lived in Osage all their married life. Allegra was a member of the First United Methodist Church, VFW Auxiliary and former member of the Kitchen Klatter Band. She enjoyed her grandchildren and family.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church in Osage, with the Rev. Karen Nichols Dungan officiating. Interment will be at the Osage Cemetery.
Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, 702 State St., Osage, and one hour before services at the church.
Allegra is survived by her husband, John "Jack" Smith, of Osage; three daughters, Pauline Winer and her husband, Carroll, of Osage, Georgene Pitzen and her husband, Roger, of Marion, Jacqueline Reams and her husband, Terry, of Osage; special friend of family, Carroll Nicol and his wife, Lorene, of Osage; sister, Frances Faber, of Paducah, Ky.; 15 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

HELEN E. SMALLEY
OSAGE - Helen E. Smalley, 89, of Osage died Friday (March 29, 2002) at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.
Helen was born July 22, 1912, in Alta Vista, the daughter of Joseph and Emma (Koudelka) Kobliska. She was united in marriage to Marshall Smalley in 1936. They farmed in Floyd County until Marshall's death in 1974. Helen then moved to New Haven in 1975 and lived there for 16 years before entering the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage, where she has been for the past several years. She was an active member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in New Haven. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, and crocheting, and also enjoyed gardening. She was a 4-H leader for many years.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in New Haven, with the Rev. Ray E. Atwood officiating. Interment will be in St. Peter's Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, 702 State St. in Osage where there will be a Scripture Service at 5 p.m.
Helen is survived by four sisters, Frances Smalley, of Osage, Amy Hennagir, of Charles City, Pauline and husband, Don Nockels, of Mesa, Ariz., Lorraine Talyat, of Pismo Beach, Calif.; niece, Karen Fox and family, of Orchard, nephew, Dave Smalley and wife, Cheryl and family, of Riceville; and many other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marshall, and one sister, Arlene.
