DORIS MUSSELL

SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Doris Mussell, 98, died on March 13 (2002) of natural causes at Sugarland Ridge in Sheridan, Wyo., where she had lived for the last three years.

She was born on a ranch in Cherry County, Neb., to Wallace and Stella Nelson on July 22, 1903, the third of five children. Her parents homesteaded in Francis, Saskatchewan, Canada, and both died when she was a child. Upon their deaths, she was raised by her grandparents, Sarah and Edward Weed in Independence, Mo. Her grandfather, Edward, was a Civil War veteran.

She graduated from William Chrisman High School in Independence, from Kansas City Business College in Kansas City and from Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa.

She worked as a secretary until 1937, when she married Lee O. Mussell in Des Moines. She devoted the next 20 years to raising their three children, living in Mason City from 1945 to 1951 and in Belmond from 1951 to 1957, when they moved to Des Moines.

She returned to full time employment in 1957, occasioned by her husband's illness, retiring in 1974 from her position as departmental administrator with the National Handcraft Institute of Des Moines. Upon her retirement, she resided in Columbia, Mo., at John Knox Village in Lee's Summit, Mo., and finally in Sheridan, Wyo.

She was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her four siblings.

Surviving family include her children, Margaret Hansen and husband, Ron, of Clear Lake, Dr. Howard Mussell of Sheridan, Wyo., and Frank Mussell and Kathy Walsh, of Portland, Ore.; grandchildren, McKenzie Mussell and Channing Mussell of Portland, Ore., Anne Means and husband, Chad, of Liberty, Mo., Dr. Amy Warren and husband, Chris, of Missouri City, Texas, Dr. Grant Piepergerdes and wife, Shannon, of Liberty, Mo., Mike Hansen and wife, Renee, of Charlotte, N.C., Steve Hansen and wife, Melanie, of Houston, Minn., and Kim Hale and husband, Fred, and their children, Zack and Carter, of Byron, Minn.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26, at Speaks Memorial Chapel, 39th and M291, Independence, Mo., with interment in the family plot in Mound Grove Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to services on Tuesday.

COULTER - Violet Beneda Pedersen, 94, formerly of Coulter, died Wednesday (March 20, 2002) at Harvard Care Center in Harvard, Ill.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Hampton, with the Rev. Mary Peterson officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, rural Hampton.

Visitation will be held from noon until time of service on Saturday at the church.

DIANE L. PETERSEN

CLEAR LAKE - Diane L. Petersen, 46, 910 N. 12th St., died Tuesday (March 19, 2002) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Her funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday at the United Methodist Church, 508 2nd Ave N., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake.

Memorials may be given to the Diane L. Petersen Memorial Fund.

Diane was born June 11, 1955, in Mason City, the daughter of Donavon G. and Loraine (Evenson) Klang. She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1973.

Diane worked at several local businesses, and most recently at the All Vets Golf Course, Garner Golf & Country Club and Lake Lanes.

Diane married Bill Petersen on Aug. 7, 1992, in Clear Lake.

She loved boating, camping, raising exotic birds and driving her convertible. Diane hosted the Monday night "Meeting of the Minds."

She was always known for her sense of humor and love of animals. She loved her two favorite "kids," dogs Zoey Lynn and Della Reese.

Diane is survived by her husband, Bill Petersen, of Clear Lake; three brothers, Dan Klang and his wife, Patti, Rockwell, Randy Klang and his wife, Mary, Mason City, and Tim Klang and his wife, Jeanine, Clear Lake; one sister, Sue Price and her husband, Al, Clear Lake; several nieces and nephews; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Darreld and Zelma Petersen, Clear Lake; two brothers-in-law, Darreld (Buzz) Petersen Jr. and his wife, Bev, Clear Lake, and Cliff Petersen and his wife, Mary, Fertile; one sister-in-law, Zelene Schilling and her husband, Mark, Thornton; and special close friends, Sue Golly and Dick Nettleton, Clear Lake.

Diane was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.

MARVA D. BRADE

GARNER - Marva D. Brade, 86, of Garner, died Wednesday (March 20, 2002) at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center in Mason City.

WILLIAM H. ENDRISS SR.

SHEFFIELD - William H. Endriss Sr., 64, of Orlando, Fla., a former Sheffield resident, died on Monday (March 11, 2002) at his home.

William H. Endriss was born in Sheffield, Iowa, on Oct. 13, 1937, to Clifton and Daisey Endriss. He attended Sheffield schools and graduated in 1956.

He started his career in printing at The Sheffield Press. He was employed at Apopaka Printing in Orlando, Fla., at the time of his death.

He enjoyed his friends and family, woodworking, especially making things for his grandchildren, and his music.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, six children - William and wife, Missy, James and wife, Lynn, Jason, Roxanne and husband, Chuck, Shelly and husband, Will, and Lori - 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, all of Orlando, Fla.; his father, Clifton, of Sheffield; and a brother, Glenn, of Mason City. William "Bubba" McComes was loved like a son by Bill. They spend many happy hours together.

He will always be remembered as a king loving and gentle man, a true friend to his family and friends.

Bill was preceded in death by his mother, Daisey; sister, Myrna Jo; stepbrother, Mike Nichols; and an infant brother, Buddy.

BETTY BINNEBOSE

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - Betty Elaine Binnebose, 75, of Springfield, Ore., died March 9 (2002) of emphysema.

Born in Mason City, Iowa, to George C. and Nettie (Brenno) Jorgenson, she married Neil Binnebose on Jan. 8, 1953, in Redwood County, Minn.

She grew up in Minnesota and moved to Springfield about 16 years ago.

She enjoyed quilting and made several quilts for Doernbecher Children's Hospital. She also enjoyed reading, nature and trips to the coast.

She was a member of the Lutheran church.

In addition to her husband, Neil Binnebose, of Springfield, Ore., survivors include two sons, Craig Binnebose of Mason City and Mark Binnebose of Guinea, Africa; two daughters, Paula Johnson of Belmond and Karen Bull of Mason City; as well as six grandchildren.

ROBERT L. STAUDT

MARBLE ROCK - Funeral services for Robert Louis Staudt, 69, of 304 N. Main St., will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Roseville, rural Marble Rock, with Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Roseville, with military rites conducted by Stroud-Gates Post 387 American Legion of Marble Rock.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the parish hall, where there will be a rosary service at 8 p.m. conducted by the Rosary Society. There also will be visitation from 3 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the parish hall with a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. followed by a rosary. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Robert Louis Staudt was born July 12, 1932, in Union Township, Floyd County, son of Louis C. and Barbara M. (Merfeld) Staudt, and died on Monday (March 18, 2002) at his residence in Marble Rock.

He received his education at St. Mary's School in Roseville and graduated from the Marble Rock High School in 1950. He became employed at Oliver Tractor Company in Charles City. On Sept. 9, 1952, he was inducted into the U.S. Army, serving with the 519th MP Company, 8th Army, in Korea. During that time he took part in the "Big Switch" prisoner exchange in Korea. He was honorably discharged on Aug. 18, 1954.

He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Mary Theis on Oct. 2, 1954, at St. Boniface Catholic Church at Ionia. To this union, seven children were born.

They farmed in the rural Marble Rock area until 1982. In 1958, he became an insurance agent and director for the Floyd County Mutual Insurance Company, where he remained until the time of his death. He was a hail adjuster for Grinnell Mutual Insurance Company for 20 years. He was a consistent top-25 agent for the Square Deal Insurance Company.

He was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church at Roseville, a member of Stroud-Gates Post 387 American Legion of Marble Rock and the Marble Rock Lions Club and former member of the Moose and Elks lodges.

Bob enjoyed his annual pilgrimage to Las Vegas and throughout the year visited local casinos. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye, Minnesota Twins and Vikings fan. As a young man, he played fast-pitch baseball and softball and in later years, enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren in their sporting activities. He enjoyed Baseball Trivia.

Survivors include his wife, Betty, of Marble Rock; four daughters and their husbands, Debra and David Vermillion of Dale City, Va., Becky and John Shook of Rockford, Vicky and Don Gallagher of Orlando, Fla., and Sandy and John Pieper of Ankeny; three sons and their wives, Gary and Julie Staudt of Iowa City, Tim and Jeanne Staudt of Rockford and Bill and Carmen Staudt of Rockford; 16 grandchildren, Emily and Elizabeth Vermillion, Aaron, Andrew and Amanda Staudt, Maria, Barbara and Sabrina Staudt, Alisha and Nathaniel Staudt, Nicole, Tony, Adam and Sara Shook, and Will and Lucas Pieper; one brother, Russell, and his wife, Betty Jo Staudt, of Marble Rock; three aunts, Agatha Krambeer and Gila Merfeld, both of Greene, and Audrey Merfeld of Marble Rock; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Rose Marie Cousins.

EVA E. HALL

GARNER - Eva E. Hall, 82, of Garner, died Sunday (March 17, 2002) at Walker Colonial Manor Nursing Home, South Sioux City, Neb., following a lengthy illness.

Her funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday at Faith Lutheran Church in Miller with the Rev. Owen Gaasedelen officiating. Interment will be in Ellington Prairie Cemetery near Miller.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner and one hour prior to services at the church.

Eva Elaine Anderson Hall was born July 31, 1919, in Forest City, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Anna (Anderson) Hodson. She graduated from Forest City High School and taught in the country schools near Forest City for four years.

On May 17, 1941, she was married to Bert Anderson. They farmed in the Ventura area until his death in 1952.

On Oct. 30, 1955, she was married to Harold Hall. They lived northeast of Garner before moving into Garner in 1984.

Eva worked for Ventura High School as a secretary to the principal and as a library assistant for four years. She attended classes at Mason City Junior College and graduated from Drake University in 1973.

For 17 years, she was a first grade teacher at Titonka Community Schools. The children she taught and the people she worked with during her years as a teacher were very important to Eva.

She enjoyed her grandchildren, arranging flowers and attending basketball games.

She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and the area Happy Birthday Club.

She is survived by her husband, Harold Hall of Garner; her son, Ron Anderson and his wife, Nancy, of Sioux City; two daughters, LaVonne Runft and her husband, Tom, of Colbert, Wash., and Kathleen Steward and her husband, Larry, of Missouri City, Texas; three stepchildren, Terry Hall and his wife, Marcie, of Woodland Hills, Calif., David Hall and his wife, Karen, of Conaga Park, Calif., and Marilyn Kruse and her husband, Daryl, of Des Moines; eight grandchildren, Jeffrey Anderson and his wife, Lisa, Christine Flemr and her husband, Matthew, Stephanie Schmit and her husband, Mark, Heather Johnson, Jason Runft, Jeremy Runft, Jonathan Steward and Patrick Steward; four stepgrandchildren, Melissa Kruse, Jeniffer Kruse, Krystle Kruse and Daniel Kruse; five great-grand children; a sister, Hazel Greiman and her husband, Lawrence, of Garner; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Vivian Anderson of Ventura, Dorothy Anderson of Ventura, Carrie and Bernard Greiman of Garner, Marie Hodson of Forest City, Galen and Mary Hall of Mankato, Minn., Merle and Marge Hall of Forest City, Doris and Marvin Juhl of Forest City, Myrtle and Merle Yanecek of Cedar Rapids and Leonard and Donna Hall of Maine.

GENEVIEVE L. MULDOON

MASON CITY - Genevieve L. Muldoon, 85, of Mason City, died Monday (March 18, 2002) at the Heritage Care Center in Mason City.

Her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Bruce Collins officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today and one hour prior to services on Friday at the funeral home.

Genevieve Louise Muldoon was born May 20, 1916,, in Wells, Minn., the daughter of Howard and Mabel (Blood) Wilcox. She grew up in Albert Lea, Minn. She attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City and worked for Deckers (Armour) in data processing for 30 years and briefly at Winnebago Industries before retiring.

She married William J. Muldoon on Aug. 20, 1945. She received Jesus Christ as her personal savior on Aug. 10, 1943. Some favorite Bible verses were John 3:16 and Proverbs 3:5,6. She was a member of the Mason City Christian Assembly.

She belonged to a sewing club. Her biggest hobby and greatest love were her children and grandchildren.

Those left to cherish her loving memory are four sons, Bill Muldoon and wife, Kathy, of Omaha, Neb., Jack Muldoon and wife, Mely, of Mesquite, Texas, Howie Finneman and wife, Penny, of Mason City, and Ron Muldoon of Dallas, Texas; one daughter, Marcia Heatherton of Mason City; grandchildren Bill Muldoon, Coleen Dunn and Robin and Reed Tills of Omaha, Neb., Dan Muldoon of South Carolina, Dee Ann Muldoon of Mesquite, Texas, Jim Finneman of Cedar Rapids, Judy Ratzlaff and Dave Colglazier of Hampton, Sherry Colglazier of Burt, Amy Wyborny of Mason City, Sara Heatherton of Des Moines and Will and Matt Muldoon of Mesquite, Texas; and many great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Mabel Wilcox; her husband, William Muldoon; infant son, Leland; and two sisters, Helen Heine and Lois Blynn.

MASON CITY - Robert C. Schurtz, 68, of Stanton, Calif., formerly of Mason City, died Sunday (March 17, 2002) at his daughter's home in Lawson, Mo.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Richard D. Scheerer of First Congregational United Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Saturday at the funeral home. His body was cremated.

BRIGADIER ELLIS BOLLWAHN

MASON CITY - Brigadier Ellis Bollwahn, 88, of 302 Second St. N.E., died on Sunday, March 10, 2002, at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

His funeral will be held at noon on Saturday at the Salvation Army in Mason City, with Captain Jon Augenstein of the Salvation Army of Wichita, Kan., and Major Charles Wright of the Salvation Army of Mason City, officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Allen, Ill.

Visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. on Saturday until time of services.

Memorials may be given to the Salvation Army in his name.

Ellis Carl Bollwahn was born to William and Ruth Bollwahn on Feb. 1, 1914, in Antioch, Ill. He was brought to the Lord early in life at the Methodist church in Antioch. When the family moved to Janesville, Wis., they attended the German Lutheran Church. In his teen years, Ellis was attached to The Salvation Army and dedicated himself to a life in the ministry.

Following study in business college, Ellis entered The Salvation Army College for Officer Training in Chicago. He was commissioned and ordained in June 1936.

Married in 1940 to Alice Marjorie Evans, they served together as pastors and community workers with The Salvation Army in South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois, retiring after 43 years of service from the Mason City Citadel in 1979.

Brigadier was active in community affairs. He was a member of Kiwanis International for 58 years, served actively with the North Iowa Ministerial Alliance and enjoyed hospital and nursing-home chaplaincy in retirement.

He knew his limits but ignored them, rising to serve those in need. In October 1996, upon the Iowa sesquicentennial, Brig. Bollwahn was named by the Globe-Gazette as one of the "150 North Iowans Who Made A Difference" throughout the history of the state.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Alice, and his oldest son, William, both of whom were residents of Mason City.

Brig. Bollwahn is survived by a daughter-in-law, Mary Hill (Mrs. Cecil), of Clear Lake; a son and daughter-in-law, Lt. Colonels Paul and Ronda Bollwahn, of Alexandria, Va.; three grandchildren, Gwyndel Inglis (Mrs. Jason), of Hermosa Beach, Calif., Joshua Bollwahn (and Sarah) of Denver, Colo., and Lindsay Bollwahn of Albuquerque, N.M., and their spouses.

Extended family, colleagues, and a host of friends mourn the separation but rejoice in a soldier of Christ being "Promoted to Glory."

MASON CITY - Robert C. "Bud" Schurtz, 68, of Stanton, Calif., formerly of Mason City, died Sunday (March 17, 2002) at his daughter's home in Lawson, Mo.

Robert C. "Bud" Schurtz was born on Nov. 17, 1933, in Mason City, the son of Robert C. and Veryle Maria (Conway) Schurtz. Bud grew up on the family farm southeast of Mason City. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1951.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1952-1956 on the USS Los Angeles during the Korean War.

Bud was married to Marian Lee on May 29, 1957, at the First United Methodist Church in Mason City. To this union were born three children. Bud attended and graduated with a bachelor of business administration degree from the University of Iowa in 1960

Upon graduating they moved to California, where he worked in contract administration for many years. He owned and ran a restaurant in Sedalia, Mo., for six years.

He and his family then returned to live in Mason City, where Bud owned H & R Block in Clear Lake. Since 1988 Bud has lived in Stanton, Calif., where he operated his own business.

Bud was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Mason City, and a member of the Masonic Lodge of Sedalia, Mo.

He was also an alumnus of the University of Iowa and an avid Hawkeye fan his whole life. He enjoyed visits with family and friends at home.

Survived by companion, Beverly Smith, of Stanton, Calif.; daughters, Leslie Clawson and husband, Larry, of Lawson, Mo., Renee Schurtz and Tim Roberts, of Seattle, Wash.; son, Mathew Schurtz, of Independence, Mo.; grandsons, Larry D. Clawson and Ashley Buchanan, of Kansas City, Mo., Bradley D. Clawson, of Palm Bay, Fla.; brother, Richard Schurtz and wife, Gail, of Mason City; nephew, Jon Schurtz, of Mason City; great-niece, Jade Schurtz, of Mason City; great-nephew, Clay Schurtz, of Mason City; mother of his children, Marian J. Schurtz, of Mason City; and several cousins of the Mason City area.

GREENE - Evelyn Rover,74, of 110 South High Street, Greene, died Thursday (March 21, 2002) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Her funeral will be 2 p.m. today at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Vilmar, rural Greene, with the Rev. Mark Walker officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Evelyn Barz was born Jan. 1, 1928, near Dows, Franklin County, a daughter of Carl and Iloe (Pepper) Barz. She received her education in the Hansell Public schools and was united in marriage to Harold Hurd on April 25, 1945, at St. John Lutheran Church in Clarksville. They farmed in the Clarksville area until the marriage ended in 1964. Evelyn then made her home in Shell Rock, where she was employed as head cook at Carvers Restaurant.

Evelyn met Lester Rover on Feb. 26, 1972, and was married on Aug. 17, 1972, at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Clarksville. They farmed in the rural Greene area until their retirement in 1986. Evelyn took an active part in the farming operation and during the harvest drove the truck. They moved into the Valley View Apartments in Greene in February 2002.

Her interests included cooking, gardening and being an avid reader. She is survived by her husband, Lester, of Greene; two daughters and their spouses, Judy and Donald Rogers of Kansas City, Kan., Shirley and Larry Frey of Hampton; six sons and their spouses, Steve Hurd of Olathe, Kas., Dan and Denise Hurd of Houston, Tex., Henry and Lois Rover of Nora Springs, Marvin and Mary Rover of Norfolk, Neb., James and Marjorie Rover, of Shell Rock, and Paul and Carolyn Rover of Greene; 14 grandchildren, Kathy and Greg Dujakovich, Ramona and Deric Hawks, Joseph Zwosta, Laura Reents, Jason Hurd, Jeremy Hurd, Nick Hurd, Amanda Maple, John and Shelly Rover, Judy Rover, Michael Rover, Jennifer and Brad Greiner, William Rover, Andrea and Brian McBurney; seven great grandchildren; Nikole Dujakovich, Zachary Dujakovich, Dylan Reents, Ryan Hurd, Alexandria Rover, Andrew Rover and Jenna Rover; one brother, Gordon and his wife, Pat Barz, of Straighten, Ohio.

Fred was born Sept. 4, 1932, in Niles Township (rural Charles City), Floyd County. He was the son of Fredrick W. and Edith (Waidelich) Wegner. Fred was Baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charles City. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1950.

He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict from 1952 - 1956. Stationed in Selma, Ala., he was a flight instructor with the Link Training.

Fred married Betty Grap Feb. 13, 1953, in Charles City. Following the service he farmed in the rural Charles City area. Fred and Betty moved to Clear Lake in 1971, where he was the district manager for Vigortone Feeds and Crows Seed Corn. He was the general manager for the Super 8 Motel for 18 years until he retired in 1996.

Fred's pride and joy was spending time with his family, grandchildren and great-granddaughter. Fred enjoyed traveling, collecting antiques, coins and stamps. He will be loved and remembered for his wonderful sense of humor right up until the end.

Fred was a member of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Mason City.

Virgil was born on June 30, 1911.

On Sept. 7, 1936, he was united in marriage to his beloved wife, Veronica Hebel, in Manly. He owned Read's Grocery for 30 years until he retired in 1972 when he sold the business to the Teamsters Local 828.

Virgil, known as Mike to all, was a great friend and companion to many. He adored his children, grandchildren, great-grandkids and Maggie, his daughter's 100-pound boxer. He shared his zest for life and love that will be forever cherished by his one son, Robert Read, of San Francisco and his two children, Stephanie and Becky; two daughters, Patricia ("Patty") Black and her husband, Don, of Maryland and their four children, Scott, Lynn, Mike and Mark, and Joann("Joey") Tierney and her husband, Ron, of Montevideo, Minn. and their three children, Todd, Traci and Terri; 13 great-grandchildren; and also his one sister, Marveyl Phillips of Oklahoma City, Okla.

He loved his daily routine including reading the paper every morning with Sharon and Ron at the Teamsters and sharing lunch with his Country Kitchen "family".

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, Alonzo and Metta (Felsman); his beloved wife, Veronica; two sisters; four brothers; two great-grandchildren, Peyton and Michael; and a special friend, Mabel.

Kenneth was born Jan. 16, 1926, in Mason City, the son of Howard and Vera (Willey) Wendel. He grew up on a farm and learned to love farming at an early age. After graduating from Mason City High School in 1944, he proudly served his country as part of the Japanese occupation force and was stationed in Osaka, Japan. Following the war, he was honorably discharged from the Army and returned to the family farm.

He was united in marriage to Marlys M. Lawrence on Aug. 12, 1969, in Minneapolis, Minn. In addition to farming, he worked several years as a district sales manager for the Nature's Plant Food Co. and worked 17 years as a production worker for Winnebago Industries before retiring in 1989. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.

In his free time, he enjoyed gardening, yard work, tinkering in the garage, fishing and spending time with his family.

He was a loving husband to Marlys M. Wendel of Mason City; a devoted father to Tim Wendel and wife, Chris, of Mason City, Greg Wendel and wife, Laurie, of Mason City; daughter-in-law, Romaine Everett, of South St. Paul, Minn., and William Wendel; a proud grandfather to, Ann, Moriah, Hannah, Alyssa, Ryan, Sarah and Morgan; a caring brother to Calvin E. Wendel and wife, Shirley, of Mason City. Many cousins, nephews, nieces and friends will cherish his memory.

Eunice Irene Petersburg was born on a farm near Fertile on March 4, 1919, the daughter of Roy and Mae (Humphrey) Larson. She attended school in Fertile and continued on at Waldorf College. She taught at Little Cedar until her marriage to Donald L. Petersburg on May 26, 1940.

They farmed in the Fertile and Joice area until they retired and moved to Lake Mills in 1977. She had been an active member at Fertile Lutheran Church, Beaver Creek and Salem Lutheran Church.

Eunice was an active volunteer with the senior citizens and the Lake Mills Care Center. She was an avid game player and loved to travel on a moment's notice.

Eunice is survived by her five loving children; Ray and his wife, Sharon, of Loveland, Colo., Julie and her husband, Gregg Groepper of Helena, Mont., Dan and his wife, Linda, of Cookeville, Tenn., Douglas and his wife, Lorna, of Joice, Kathy of Clear Lake; 10 grandchildren, Shawn and his wife, Paula Petersburg, Kim and her husband, BryanWolniak, Michelle and her husband, John Murray, Allison and her husband, Chris Bryson, Ryan Groepper and Samantha Groepper, Amy and her husband, Chris Carden, Jessica and her husband, Jake Franklin, Mike Petersburg and Jason Petersburg; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Wilma Larson of Mason City, and Gen Bray of Osage; along with several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

HAZEL R. BEST

MASON CITY - Hazel R. Best, 94, of Mason City, died Saturday (March 23, 2002) at Good Shepherd Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Wayside Chapel at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Jeff Dahlin officiating. Burial will be 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Osage Cemetery.

There will be no public visitation as her body was cremated.

Hazel R. Best was born July 11, 1907, in Forbes, N.D., the daughter of Joe and Caroline (Kraus) Sedlacek. At age one, her family moved to St. Ansgar, where Hazel was baptized and confirmed at the St. Ansgar Methodist Church and where she attended high school, graduating in 1925. After graduation, she helped with the family business and did correspondence work with the Gates Business School in Waterloo.

Hazel was married to Claude A. Best on October 2, 1932, in Albert Lea, Minn. The couple lived in St. Ansgar for five years, Osage for a couple of years and then moved to Mason City in 1941. Claude worked as a carpet, tile, and Formica layer while Hazel served as his secretary and sold Tupperware.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Mason City and a former member of its Ladies Aid as well as Mason City Woman's Club.

Hazel was a lifelong lover of music, especially band music, and attended 60 North Iowa Band Festival parades.

Surviving family members include sons; Clarence A. Best of Madison, Wis., Jerold A. Best and wife, Judy, of Iowa City; grandsons, Bradley, Brandon, Blair, and Terry; granddaughters, Denise and Brenda; five great-grandchildren, and a cousin in California.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Claude, and a sister, Mabel.

BANCROFT- Joseph Francis Fangman, 81, of Bancroft died Saturday (March 23,2002) at the Westview Care Center in Britt.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Catholic Church in Bancroft. Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Bancroft.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, 105 E. Kossuth, Bancroft. There will be a vigil for the deceased beginning at 7 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:30 p.m.

Memorials may be directed to the Bancroft Historical Society.
