GREENE - Helen Pooley, 89, of Greene, died Friday (May 15, 2002) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene, with the Rev. Paul Uzel officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Church and one hour before services on Wednesday.

GREENE - Dorothy M. Jepsen, 95, of rural Greene, died Thursday (March 14, 2002) at the Allison Care Center in Allison.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene, with the Rev. Paul Uzel officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the church, with a time of remembrance at 7:30 p.m. There will be visitation one hour before services on Tuesday at the church.

HAZEL MILDRED CLARK

WEAVERVILLE, Calif. - Hazel Mildred Clark, 78, of Weaverville, died Monday, March 4, 2002, at the Trinity Hospital.

A memorial service was held on March 9, 2002, at the McDonalds Chapel in Weaverville, with the Rev. Ron Graham of the First Baptist Church officiating.

Hazel M. Clark was born March 2, 1924, in rural Chula, in Livingston County, Mo., the daughter of George and Josie (Transue) Cobberly.

Hazel married George Nathan Clark on Jan. 19, 1945, at The Little Brown Church in Nashua. They spent their early years in Minnesota and moved to Oregon with their family in 1952. They moved to Weaverville in 1954 and had lived there since that time.

Hazel was a homemaker. She enjoyed working at the Jolly Cone Drive-In in Weaverville for a time. She also worked at the Polling Booth for many years.

She loved spending time with her family and friends, playing cards and games, and telling jokes.

Hazel will be lovingly missed by three sons, Lloyd and Gwen Clark, of Hillsboro, Ore., George Clark, of Weaverville, and Ray and Karen Clark, of Sheffield; five daughters, JoAnne Logan, of Enid, Okla., Shirley Millard, of Highland, Calif., Linda and Fred Maddox, of Weaverville, Roberta Jones, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Marcy and Steve Dorris, of Weaverville; 15 grandchildren, Jennie Craighton, Jeremy Clark, Sheryl Logan, Karen and Carey Terribilini, Victor, Jamie, Nathan, and Marjie Maddox, Felicia Waldmann, Monica, Jessica, and Melissa Jones, and Robbie and Sasha Dorris; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alice Nelson and Gergia Oeltjen, of Villard, Minn.; and a special friend, Vic Maddox, of Weaverville.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1997; her parents; her stepfather, John Callahan; and a sister, Nellie Palmer.

ROCKWELL - Stephanie Marie Shipman, infant daughter of Melissa Satern and Steven Shipman, of Rockwell, died Thursday (March 14, 2002) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, West Campus, in Mason City.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. today at the St. Luke Lutheran Church, 101 N. Hawkeye in Nora Springs, with the Rev. Ruth Hansen officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hwy 18 West, Mason City.

Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until time of services today at the church.

Stephanie Marie Shipman, was born on Jan. 22, 2002, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Left to cherish her memory are her parents, Steven Shipman and Melissa Satern of Rockwell; a brother, Blake Ryan Shipman, of Rockwell; maternal grandfather, David Satern and his fiancée, Lisa VanDusen, of Nora Springs; maternal grandmother, Annette Allen, of Mason City; paternal grandparents, LeRoy and Carolyn Berding, of Mason City; paternal grandmother, Sheila Shipman, of Mason City; maternal great-grandparents, Conrad and Arlene Satern, of Mason City; maternal great-grandmother, Edith Knudtson, of Leland; paternal great-grandmother, Janice Shipman, of Mason City; two uncles, Brad Satern, of Nora Springs, and LeRoy "Butch" Berding and his wife, Crystal, of Hampton; and a aunt, Diane Berding, of Mason City; numerous great-aunts, uncles and cousins.

Stephanie was preceded in death by her maternal great-grandfather, Karl Knudtson; paternal great-grandparents, John and Alberta Berding; paternal great-grandfather, Richard Shipman; and a paternal great-great-grandmother, Lou Montgomery.

KARL FREDERICK GABELMANN

AMES - Karl Frederick Gabelmann, 77, of 1421 Stafford Ave. in Ames, died Wednesday (March 13, 2002) at the Riverside Manor Guest Home in Ames.

His funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City, with the Rev. John Amiel Anderson officiating. Interment will be held in the United Church of Christ Pleasant Cemetery in Nashua.

Visitation was held on Friday at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home and will continue one hour before services today.

Karl was born on May 3, 1924, the son of William and Christina (Kehret) Gabelmann, in Clarksville. He spent his childhood and obtained his education from the Butler County schools.

On Jan. 1, 1945, he entered the United States Army with the highest rank of Tech Sgt. Karl served in Rhineland and Central Europe. His military occupation was military intelligence, IRTC basic training, small arms mechanic, mail orderly and machine gunner- platoon leader. The decorations and citations that Karl received were the Marksman-Carbine SS Rifle, Combat Infantryman Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, Rhineland Silver Service Ribbon and two Overseas Service Bars. On July 11, 1946, he was honorably discharged and reunited with his family.

On May 7, 1944, Karl was united in marriage to Kathryn Nickles at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charles City. He was employed by NFO (National Farmers Organization) for 21 years.

Karl was a member of the American Legion in Garner.

He enjoyed woodworking, watching wrestling and eating out. Karl was devoted to his church and his family and with his faith and love of God it carried him through life. He cherished the times spent with his children, grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Karl is survived by his wife, Kathryn; six children, Sandra Powell and her husband, Robert, of Clear Lake, Nancy Foster and her husband, Steve, of Mansfield, Texas, Fred Gabelmann and his wife, Mary Ann, of Derry, N.H., Leanne Chittester and her husband, Tom, of Glendale, Ariz., William Gabelmann and his wife, Marla, of Bettendorf, and Merrie Jo Reavis and her husband, Jeffrey, of Phoenix, Ariz.; one sister, Hulda Everding, of Tripoli; one brother, Walter Gabelmann, of Riceville; grandfather of 22 and great-grandfather of 11.

Karl was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and three sisters.

DOROTHY M. JEPSEN

GREENE - Funeral services for Dorothy M. Jepsen, 95, of rural Greene, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church in Greene with the Rev. Paul Uzel officiating.

Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church, where there will be a time of remembrance beginning at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before the services at the church Tuesday.

Dorothy Marie Hansen was born May 12, 1906, in Cedar Falls, a daughter of Serenus and Anna (Gregersen) Hansen, and died Thursday, March 14, 2002, at Allison Care Center, Allison.

She received her education in the rural Mitchell County and Bennezette Township country schools. She was a graduate of Greene High School in 1924. She received her teaching certificate the following year and taught at Bennezette No. 1 and No. 6 until her marriage.

She was united in marriage to Lawrence Jepsen on Dec. 7, 1930, at Marshalltown. They farmed in the rural Bennezette and Coldwater townships until Lawrence's death in October 1966.

Dorothy's interests included flower gardening, sewing, playing cards, and making flannel pajamas and quilts for family members. She received much joy viewing the mountains and the get-togethers with her high school classmates. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Women, Better Way Club and the Friendly Circle.

Living family members include two daughters and their spouses, Helen and Gene Judas of Decorah, and Ruth Ann and Douglas Bellmer of Cedar Falls; three sons and their spouses, Paul and Glenda Jepsen of Greene, Charles Lee and Betty Jepsen of Waukon, and Larry Jepsen of Nora Springs; six granddaughters, Carrie Bellmer, Diane Jepsen, Beth Spenler, Ellen Landry, Valerie Hinders and Joan Jepsen; eight grandsons, Paul Jepsen Jr., Craig Bellmer, Ronnie Jepsen, Steve Jepsen, Mike Jepsen, Gary Jepsen, Eric Jepsen and Dean Jepsen; six great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren, Jeff Juhl, Virginia Dockhorn, Maurice Juhl, Dwight Juhl and Tracy and her husband, Forest Steere; six step-great-grandchildren; and her sister-in-law, Jessie Hansen of Greene.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; one sister, Arlene Stock; and two brothers, Charles in infancy and Harley Hansen.

CHARLES CITY - Funeral services for Ethel A. Ritter, 96, will be held at 1:30 p.m.

Monday, March 18, at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Marble Rock with Pastor Marjorie Bradshaw of the Marble Rock United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Westside Cemetery in Marble Rock.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Marble Rock and will continue one hour before services Monday.

Ethel Alma Wagner was born July 19, 1905, in Alexandria, Minn., a daughter of Joseph and Alma (Reynolds) Wagner, and died Thursday, March 14, 2002, at Salisbury Baptist Home in Charles City on the 18th anniversary of her husband's death.

At an early age, she and her family moved to rural Butler County near Dumont, where she received her education in the country school nearby. As a young lady, she was employed as a housekeeper and caregiver to newly born babies.

On April 18, 1924, she was united in marriage to Leo Clare Ritter and to this union was born 11 children. They made their home in the Marble Rock area.

During World War II, she was employed by the Oliver Tractor Works. They later moved to Rockford. Following her husband's death, she moved to St. Peter, Minn., with her son, Kenneth, and later returned to Charles City in 1995. She entered Salisbury Baptist Home in December 1999.

Ethel and Leo enjoyed fishing and going junking together. The highlight of their marriage was when they received a letter from President Ronald Reagan on their 60th wedding anniversary.

Living family members include six daughters, Darlene and Don Hadden of Castana, Iowa, Arlene and Rick Schwartz of Council Bluffs, Dorothy Webb of Hamilton, Ind., Fran Bowling of Sanford, N.C., Donna Connerley of Charles City, Connie and Charles Gutch of Eddyville, Iowa; three brothers, Ronald and Bethel Ritter of Charles City, Vern and Dorothy Dreyustern of Tucson, Ariz., and Robert and Lana Stapella of Waterloo; and many grandchildren and great-grand-

children.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, Clair Ritter in 1955 and Kenneth Ritter in 1998; her parents; six sisters, Ollie Parker, Grace Wagner, Heddy Morphew, Cordelia Swanson, Margaret Webb, Verita

Wagner; and two brothers, Clarence Wagner and Kenneth Wagner.

CHARLES CITY - Patsy L. Wulff, 64, died Friday (March 15, 2002) at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn., of cancer.

Patsy was born in Charles City, the daughter of Clayton Miller and Amelia (Ehling) Miller.

She married Myron Wulff on Feb. 4, 1961, in Charles City.

Patsy was an organ donor and gave the gift of sight by donating her eyes.

She is survived by her husband, Myron Wulff of Charles City; two sons, Tod and Toby Wulff, both of Charles City; two brothers, Wayne Miller of Charles City and Bill Miller of Anoka, Minn.; a sister, Marlene Hockinson of Mora, Minn., and one grandson.

Patsy was preceded in death by her father in 1995; her mother in 2001, and her daughter, Teri, in 1996.

MARCIA (SVENDSEN) HOWELL

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Marcia (Svendsen) Howell, 48, died Sunday (March 10, 2002) of breast cancer.

Memorial services and burial were held in Las Vegas on Friday, March 15.

Marcia was born March 15, 1971, daughter of the late Reuben Svendsen (deceased Dec. 24, 1989) and Vernice Svendsen of Lawler, Iowa.

Marcia graduated from NIACC in 1973.

She is survived by her husband, Bob, and three sons, John and Kristy Howell, Christopher and Bobby, all of Las Vegas. She is also survived by three sisters, Dianne and Jack Blazek of Lawler, Beverly and Jerry Frey of Mason City, and Mary Ann and Julio Esquivel of Las Vegas, and one brother, Le Allyn and Cindy Svendsen of Steamboat Springs, Colo.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at Trinity Lutheran Church, New Hampton.

MASON CITY - James W. Curtiss, 66, of Plymouth, died Thursday (March 14, 2002) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

James William Curtiss was born April 27, 1935, the son of James C. and Marie (Johnson) Curtis, near Buffalo Center. Jim enlisted in the United States Navy in 1952. After serving his country for 23 years, Jim retired from the Navy in 1975.

On Sept. 21, 1982, James was united in marriage to Susan Squires in Mason City.

Jim enjoyed camping, fishing, golfing, woodworking and was an avid history buff. He loved cars, sporting activities and life in general. James looked forward to spending time with his grandchildren and friends.

James was a member of the San Juan Marne VFW Post 733 of Mason City.

Those thankful for having shared in Jim's life include his wife, Susan; two stepsons, Scott Madison of Bettendorf and Jeffery Madison and his wife, Jayne, of Rochester, Minn.; five brothers, Raymond Curtis and his wife, Joyce, of Plymouth, Robert Curtis of Mason City, Joseph Curtis of Ottumwa, Timothy Welch of Kansas City, Mo., and Arthur Welch and his wife, Linda, of Columbus, Mo., and two grandchildren, Macie Claude and Sophia Madison.

Delbert, the son of Harry and Gladys Buckingham Cornwell, was born May 13, 1935, in Independence.

Delbert grew up in Waterloo, where he attended school. He later worked for Rath Meat Packing Co. He moved to the Belmond/Goodell area in 1977, where he was employed by Triggs Manufacturing and later Kor-Berts.

Delbert was united in marriage with Wilma Burnett on Nov. 9, 1978, in Waterloo. The couple made their home in Belmond and Goodell.

Delbert was a member of the Belmond UCC Congregational. He enjoyed meeting with the morning crew at Mama's for breakfast. Delbert also enjoyed woodworking and watching westerns on television.

Delbert is survived by his wife, Wilma, of Goodell; his father, Harry Cornwell and Virgie of Waterloo; five daughters, Judy Churchill and husband, Douglas, of Pheonix, Ariz., Christy Hancock of Nixa, Mo., Laura Wenzel and husband, Loren, of Belmond, Veronica Rains of Oelwein, and Michaela Graves and husband, Dennis, of Oelwein; two sons, Jeff Cornwell and wife, Donna, of Dysart, and Kelly Cornwell and wife, Shelly, of Independence; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Phyllis, Delores and Peg; and brother, Larry, and wife, Karen.

Alice was born Nov. 1, 1928, in Goodell, Iowa, the daughter of Otto and Ruth (Johnson) Nuehring. She was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church in Belmond and was confirmed March 29, 1942, at St. James Lutheran Church in Mason City. Alice graduated from Mason City High School in 1946.

She married Joseph P. Rowe on Aug. 6, 1948, at St. James Lutheran Church. She and her husband moved to Rockwell in 1962 and returned to Mason City in 1992.

Alice was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, enjoyed gardening, flower gardening, crafts, card playing, her monthly lunches with the class of 1946 and spending time with her family, which was her main focus. Her family wanted to acknowledge the staff at Hospice for the care she received.

Alice is survived by four daughters, Kathy Newman and her husband, Tom, of Clear Lake, Deb Zobel and her husband, Gary, of Mason City, Susan Larson and her husband, Ed, of Engleside, Ill., and Jody Thorson and her husband, Allen, of Mason City; two brothers, Orville Nuehring and his wife, Virginia, of Mason City, and Robert Nuehring and special friend, Mary, of Mason City; a sister, Beulah Fairbanks, and her husband, Richard, of Mason City; 10 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Marilyn Nuehring of Clear Lake, and a brother-in-law, Herb Steeke of Perham, Minn.

He was married to Marlene Olson in 1996.

He was a Mason and had been active in the Mason City Jaycees.

He enjoyed woodworking and furniture making. Traveling also brought him great pleasure, as did the company of family and friends.

Marie Louise Levad was born in Forest City on March 9, 1917, the daughter of Charlie and Mame (McGuire) Drugg. She graduated from Forest City High School, received her teacher's training at Waldorf College and began teaching country school.

On May 25, 1939, she married Gordon Levad at the St. James Rectory in Forest City. The couple made their home on the family Century Farm in Mt. Valley Township near Forest City.

Marie was a member of St. James Catholic Church where she was active in Guild and taught Catechism. She loved to fish and enjoyed her friends in the OAO Club and her bridge club. She was the family historian and poet and was involved in community theater and other activities.

Marie is survived by eight sons and three daughters, Charles and Trena of Mason City, Richard and Karen of Grand Junction, Colo., David and Betty Jo of Yakima, Wash., Steven and Barbara of Poplar, Mont., Joe of Mason City, Tom of Wilton, Jim and Judy of Forest City, Mary Mosiman of Mason City, Bob and Deb of Forest City, Susan Baugus and John of White Bear Lake, Minn., and Sharon Bedig and Mike of Watertown, Mass.; 36 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; sisters Eileen Meyer of Albert City and Margaret Brighton of Lake Mills; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary Martha Monson, the daughter of George and Wilhelmine (Thielengerdes) Ehlers, was born July 31, 1913, on a farm south of Woden. She attended Madole rural school west of Woden until 1919, when she moved with her family to Hettinger, N.D. She continued her education at a country school near Hettinger.

In 1934, Mary returned to Iowa and lived with her maternal grandmother on a farm east of Woden.

In March of 1939, she was married to Jack Monson at Blue Earth, Minn. They made their home in Woden where she was a homemaker. She then worked at the Woden-Crystal Lake School both as a custodian and later as a teacher's aide until 1984 when she retired.

In 1999, she moved to Prairie View Apartments in Garner where she enjoyed her many friends and activities. Mary was an active lady, she loved to bake, spend time in her garden, crochet and visit with friends. But most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and St. John's Lutheran Women.

Mary is survived by her three children, John Monson and his wife, Karen, of Forest City and their three daughters, Kristi Monson of Minneapolis, Minn., Kelly Schneider and her husband, Dave, of Forest City and their two sons, Jake and Isaac, and Kim Price of Forest City and her two sons, Mitchell and Jack, Janice Buffington and her husband, Forrest, of Minneapolis, Minn., and their two children, Ellen Bruns and her husband, Eric, of Britt and their two daughters, Elizabeth and Ahnalise and Andrew Buffington and his wife, Keila, of Forest City and their two daughters, Madeline and Isabel, and Jean Baker and her husband, Bill, of Kasson, Minn., and their three children, Ann Baker of Kasson, Susan Baker of Rochester, Minn., and Joseph Baker of Kasson; a sister, Ann Walch of Cerritos, Calif.; and many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

Irma Cecelia Haaf, the daughter of Bernard and Cecile (Bryant) Knoll, was born Nov. 12, 1914, at Marshalltown. She graduated from Garner High School in 1932 as class valedictorian. On April 23, 1935, she was married to John Joseph Haaf at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner. They lived in Garner where they owned and operated an upholstery business. Irma also worked in the Garner-Hayfield School system as a cook for many years.

She moved to Prairie View Apartments in Garner on July 21, 1994. She enjoyed her family, sewing, handwork and crafts.

She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Rosary Society, and the Garner VFW Auxiliary.

She is survived by her five children, Phyllis Kern and her husband, Joe, of Clear Lake, Phillip Haaf and his wife, Geraldine, of Cedar Rapids, Wanda Worley and her husband, Robert, of Cedar Rapids, Bonnie Lee of Davenport and Mark Haaf and his wife, Lori, of Garner; 27 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; a sister, LaVon Lemke of Garner; a sister-in-law, Georgia Kennedy of Texas; a brother-in-law, Raymond Swalve of Fremont, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

She managed various businesses in Mason City until moving to Forsyth in 1963 where she continued to work in various cafes.

Dorothy married Carroll Shahan in Sheridan, Wyo. They continued to live in Forsyth until moving to Shelby in 1965. They returned to Colstrip in 1973 and Dorothy has continued to live there since, mainly teaching ceramics for 13 years.

She enjoyed doing ceramics and especially enjoyed following her grandsons' ball games on the radio. Dorothy was a member of the Women of the Moose at Colstrip and the Montana Ceramic Association.

Dorothy is survived by three sons, Tom (Robin) Shahan of Colstrip, Mont., Michael (Linda) Shahan of Fertile, Iowa, and Patrick (Joy) Shahan of LaPorte City, Iowa; Pam (Don) Wirtjes of Mason City; her brother Oscar "Bill" Crawford of Mason City; 10 grandchildren, Brandon, Alicia, Heather, Loree, Tyler, Whitney, Seth, J.D., Steven and Matthew; two great-grandchildren, Samantha and Dylan; her special "kids," Doryld Watson and Marilyn Watson; and her special "grandkids," Chris and Cody Watson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carroll "Tubo"; her son, Randy; two brothers, Charles and Ralph Crawford; and two sisters, Vera Mellang and Opal Tuthill.

HAZEL E. PETERSON

MILLER - Hazel E. Peterson, 74, of Miller, died Sunday (March 17, 2002) at the Manly Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Crystal Township Cemetery in Crystal Lake with the Rev. Owen Gaasedelen of Faith Lutheran Church in Miller officiating.

There will be no visitation. Following the graveside service the family invites all relatives and friends to a luncheon being served at Faith Lutheran Church in Miller.

Hazel Elizabeth Peterson, the daughter of Ed and Minnie (Olson) Stalheim, was born Aug. 3, 1927, at Scarville. She graduated from Scarville High School and continued her education at Waldorf College in Forest City where she received her teaching certificate. Hazel taught in the rural schools in Winnebago County.

On March 12, 1949, she was married to Gilbert Wayne Peterson at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City. They farmed at Crystal Lake, Forest City, Fertile and Garner until 1975.

In February of 1976, they opened Garner Electronics, which they owned and operated until 1982. After her husband's death in 1981, she moved to Miller.

Hazel enjoyed her family and friends. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Miller.

She is survived by her daughter, Julie Ann Adams and her husband, Richard, of Kensett; a brother, Kenneth Stalheim and his special friend, Melba Kuper, of Nora Springs; a sister, Norma Jorgenson of Austin, Minn.; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert, February 28, 1981; her parents; three sisters, Frances Stalheim, Esther Thorson and Aggie Tollagson; and a brother, Arnie Stalheim.

GREENE - Funeral services for Helen Pooley, 89, of 309 N. Fourth St., will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church in Greene with Pastor Paul Uzel officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Helen Augusta Borchard was born Dec. 7, 1912, west of Rockford, a daughter of Richard H. and Matha M. (Zitzow) Borchard, and died Friday, March 15, 2002, at the Nora Springs Care Center after a brief illness.

At the age of three her family moved west of Marble Rock where she later attended Scott Center School, and in order to attend high school in Marble Rock, she and a friend worked for room and board so they could stay in town during the winter months.

After her completion of high school, she worked for Black's Department Store in Waterloo.

On Oct. 14, 1934, she was united in marriage to S. Dwight Pooley at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Helen was bookkeeper for the S. D. Pooley Lumber Company in Greene for 37 years working until shortly before her death.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Women, Good Cheer Circle, and the Greene Women's Club.

Living family members include her children and their spouses, Priscilla and Earl Landers of Greene, Richard and Janice Pooley of Norristown, Pa., Alan and Sandra of Apple Valley, Minn., and Philip and Mary Ann of Hurst, Texas; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Lynn and Don Swanson, Lisa Pooley, Dyanna Pooley, Justin and Lisa Pooley, Brandon and Trudy Landers, Brendt and Karen Landers, and Barry Landers and his friend, Dephne; and eight great-grandchildren, Chemiere Verhey, Kelsey Swanson, Tyler Landers, Taylor Landers, Trevor Landers, Brylee Landers, Owen Landers, and Cooper Landers; two sisters, Carol and her husband, Richard Rohwedder of Greene and Irene Kiehn of Fort Lupton, Colo.; and a brother, William Borchard of Marble Rock.

She was preceded in death by her husband, S. Dwight Pooley; one sister, Catherine Miller; two brothers, John Borchard and his twin brother, Charles Borchard, who died in infancy; and a grandson, Danny J. Landers.

MASON CITY - Barbara C. Hood, 81, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Thursday (March 14, 2002) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 18, at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Edward Bard officiating. Interment was in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Barbara was born on Nov. 11, 1920, the daughter of William E. and Mary Caroline (Watkins) Laupitz in Mason City. She received her education in Mason City and graduated from Mason City High School.

On Oct. 21, 1947, Barbara was united in marriage to Donald Glenn Hood.

Barbara cleaned at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and then worked for 13 years at Lock Photo's and Art Rental until the company closed.

Barbara enjoyed fishing, collecting dolls and taking photos. Her true passion was oil painting and drawing.

Barbara's memories will be cherished by her one sister, Eva Ann Taylor of Mason City; nieces, Rose Taylor of Mason City, Mary Hetland and her husband, Edwin, of Mason City, Joan Taylor of Fort Collins, Colo., and Ruth Cooper and her husband, James, of Briggsdale, Colo.; and many other nieces.

Barbara is preceded in death by her parents and husband, Donald on December 4, 1992.

DUANE ASSINK

MENOMONIE, Wis. - Duane Assink, 59, of Menomonie, Wis., died Monday (March 18, 2002) at his home.

Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday at the Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie, Wis. Burial will be at a later date following cremation.

Duane was born on Sept. 6, 1942, at Clarion, Iowa, the son of George and Vivian(Oxley) Assink. He attended school at Kanawha, Iowa, and graduated from Kanawha High School in l960.

Duane was a dairy farmer, 4-H member and showed dairy cattle at the Hancock County Fair in Kanawha.

He married Judy Eliason on June 14, 1961. To this union, five children were born. On November 22, 1982, he married Kris Nielsen.

Duane was employed as a Dairy Herd Improvement Association tester in a dairy consulting business and owned a water purification business. At the time of his death he was employed by Rydil Sales & Service in Menomonie, Wis.

He enjoyed his involvement with the dairy industry, watching NASCAR races and his favorite race car driver, Dale Jarrett, and most of all spending time with his family and grandchildren, and his many friends.

Duane is survived by his wife, Kris, of Menomonie, Wis.; three daughters, Doreen Elliott, of Austin, Minn., Deb Jorgensen and her husband, James, of Charles City, and Denette and her husband, Dave Altick, of Osage; two sons, Doug Assink, of Fairbault, Minn., and Dan Assink and his wife, Amy, of Charles City; one stepson, Brian Fox, of Madison, Wis.; eight grandchildren, Minessa Elliott, of Austin, Minn., Heather and Hilary Altick, both of Osage, Ryan Assink, Charles City, Justin and Nicholas Swant both of Charles City, Brooke Assink, Charles City, Jayden Jorgensen, of Charles City; three stepgrandchildren, Paige Fox, of Iowa City, and Kami and Dallas Fox, both of Waterloo; four brothers, Rod, of Webster City, Ron, of Modesto, Calif., Dave, of Minneapolis, Minn., and Gary, of Fitchburg, Wis.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents, George and Vivian (Oxley) Assink.

WILEY, Colo. - Krystal Fatland, 17, of Wiley, Colo., died Saturday (March 16, 2002) near Wiley, Colo., the result of an automobile accident.

Her funeral will be held at 10 a.m. today at Wiley United Methodist Church in Wiley, Colo., with the Rev. Sam Jones officiating. Burial will be in Wiley Cemetery in Wiley, Colo.

Visitation was held on Tuesday at the Valley Memorial Funeral Chapel in LaMar, Colo. and will be held one hour prior to services today at the church.

She was a member of the Wiley United Methodist Church and a member of the National Honor Society.

DONALD GENE RODGERS

BELMOND - Donald Gene Rodgers, 70, of Belmond, passed away Monday (March 18, 2002) at his home in Belmond.

Funeral services for Donald Rodgers will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond, with the Rev. Ginger Renken officiating. Burial will take place in Belmond Cemetery in Belmond, with Military rites conducted by the Belmond Honor Guard.

Donald Rodgers, the son of Earl and Eva Ruggles Rodgers, was born May 23, 1931, in Carlisle, Iowa. He grew up and attended school in Carlisle.

In 1949, Donald entered the military and served his country in the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge, Donald returned to Iowa where he worked in construction and maintenance.

Donald was united in marriage with Irene Janes on June 14, 1966, in Omaha, Neb.

Donald enjoyed collecting pop cans and key chains.

Donald is survived by his wife, Irene, of Center Point; five daughters, Theresa Tolle, of Council Bluffs, Brenda Karstens and husband, Joe, of Sioux Rapids, Sharon

McKittrick, of Renwick, Janet Rodgers, of Mason City, and Laurie Rodgers of Eagle Grove; two sons, Bill Kauffman and wife, Toby, of York, Neb., and Tim Rodgers of Houme, La.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; four sisters, Marjorie, Edna, Marie, and Doris; and one brother, Wayne.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Donald Gene Jr.; two sisters; and one brother.

CINDY K. KEW

MASON CITY - Cindy K. Kew, 44 of Las Vegas, Nev., died March 7, 2002, during a trip back to Iowa, at St. Joseph Hospital in Denver, Colo., of natural causes.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Mason City Elks Lodge, 11 Second St. N.W. in Mason City, with the Rev. Spencer Thury, of the Riverside Friends Church of Mason City, officiating.

The family will greet friends one hour prior to services in the clubrooms at the Elks. Inurnment of the cremated remains will be in the Alden Cemetery, Alden, Iowa.

Cindy was born on July 7, 1957, at Hampton, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Florence (Clark) Kew. Along with her family they moved to Mason City where she attended Mason City High School.

She enjoyed working with carnivals with the rides and the midway. She always enjoyed the travel, people and being in new places. She has spent the last six years in Las Vegas.

Cindy is survived by her mother, Florence "Robin" Jones, Kensett; her father, Frank and his wife, Adel Kew, of La Mesa, Calif.; one brother, Dan and his wife, Ellie Kew, of Mason City; two sisters, Julie Kew, of Cherokee, Iowa, and Kim and her husband, Joe Staudt, of Greene; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins; and her best friend, Roxanne Burgess and her family and her god-daughter, LaTeya Burgess, all of Mason City.
