DONALD R. WRIGHT
OSAGE - Donald R. Wright, 80, of Osage, died Saturday (March 9, 2002) at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Osage, with the Rev. Christian F. Gugel officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery. Military rites at the grave will be conducted by the Osage American Legion Post 278.
Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage and one hour before services at the church.
Don was born April 1, 1921, in Mason City, the son of Herbert A. and Susan (Donaldson) Wright. He attended school in Mason City, and was employed at Decker's packing plant. Don was united in marriage to Alice Gray on June 20, 1942, in Mason City. In October 1942, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and trained at Ft. Warren, Wyo.; Ft. Lewis, Wash.; Camp Claiborne, La.; and in Wales. He served in the Army Corps of Engineers in Wales, England, and France for 36 months.
Upon his return to Mason City, he was employed at Arnold's Auto Repair. In 1947, the family, along with the Claus Clausen family, moved to Osage and formed the partnership of Claus and Don's Auto Repair, which, after two years, became Don's Auto Repair until 1992 when Don retired.
Don was a confirmed member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Osage, a member of the Osage American Legion Post 278, and a life member of the Osage V.F.W. Post 7920.
Don was a pilot and enjoyed flying his plane. Camping was Don and Alice's passion, and during their 52 years of marriage they visited all 50 states. Don enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by three daughters, Suzanne Johnson and her husband, Keith, of Mantorville, Minn., Donette Newhouse and her husband, Leslie, of Mt. Horeb, Wis., Linda Moore and her husband, Jerry, of Osage; one son, Herbert Wright and his wife, Barbara, of Osage; ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Rose Dawson, of Mason City; and one brother-in-law, Chester Rounds, of Mason City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alice; one sister, Genevieve Rounds; and one brother, Lester Dawson.

ELDON W. BUEHRER
NORTHWOOD - Eldon W. Buehrer, 80, of Northwood, died Friday (March 8, 2002) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood, with the Rev. Paul Holmer officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.
Visitation was held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home in Northwood.
Eldon Walter Buehrer was born on April 15, 1921 at Grafton to Carl and Caroline (Trettin) Buehrer. He was baptized at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton and was confirmed at the same church in 1936. He lived with his parents on the Buehrer farm one-half mile east of Grafton. He went to school at rural No. 1 School east of Grafton and Grafton Independent School.
He entered the U. S. Navy on Aug. 26, 1942. After his honorable (medical) discharge he returned to Grafton and later moved to Mason City, where he worked a short time at Jacob E. Decker and Sons meat processing plant. He then drove bus for the Winnebago lines out of Mason City to Des Moines, Estherville and Fort Dodge.
He married Ellen June Wolff of Northwood on June 9, 1946, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Northwood. He then was employed at Rilco Lamination Products for two and one-half years. He was employed at King Seeley Thermos Company of Albert Lea for 31 years, retiring in 1984. He established Riverside Auto Parts in Northwood in 1965 along with his employment in Albert Lea. In 1986, his son Mark, took over the business.
Eldon was a 57-year member of the American Legion, and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans of Mason City. He held the offices of Commander, Vice Commander, Service Officer and many years as Adjutant of Smith-Perry Post #144 of Northwood.
He was very proud of his children and their achievements. He dearly loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great-granddaughter. He and Ellen enjoyed camping in the summer. He was a member of Moose Lodge in Mason City and Eagles Lodge in Albert Lea. He enjoyed visiting his daughter, Sharon and son-in-law, Rick, and his grandchildren and great-granddaughter in Tucson, Ariz. He enjoyed gardening and liked to help his son Mark in the business.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen, on March 16, 2001; his parents; a sister, Hazel; twin brothers, Marvin and Melvin; a brother, Leslie; and a sister, Gladys Kanzenbach of Faribault, Minn.
He was survived by his son Mark and wife, Lori; grandsons, Ryan and Cory; daughter, Sharon Kay Haugebak and son-in-law, Rick; grandchildren, Heather DeBerry and her husband, Charles ; granddaughter, Nicki Haugebak; great-granddaughter, Emma DeBerry; son, Randy and his wife, Laure; grandchildren, Nathan, Terra, Megan and Nicole; daughter, Dawn and her husband, Warren; many nieces and nephews; a sister, Muriel Bork of Wanamingo, Minn.; and several cousins.

MARBLE ROCK - Edwin P. "Ed" Schrage, 66, of 1970 270th St., Marble Rock, died Friday (March 8, 2002) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, in Mason City.
Funeral services for Ed will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Marble Rock, with the Rev. Patricia Shaw officiating. Interment will be in West Side Cemetery, Marble Rock.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service time on Tuesday at the church.
Edwin Paul Schrage was born July 19, 1935, in rural Greene. He was one of two sons of Clarence and Valda (Walsh) Schrage. He attended school in rural Butler County, and afterward joined his father's farming operation. Edwin raised quarter horses, hogs, cattle, chickens, and later draft horses. He retired in the late 1990s because of health reasons.
On June 19, 1955, he was united in marriage to Dora Christensen at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. To this union was born two sons. He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church and was formerly on the church council. He was also a member of the farm bureau. He enjoyed reading the paper, and always read the Draft Horse Journal.
Edwin is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Dora, of Marble Rock; two sons, Duane Schrage, of Charles City, and Philip Schrage and his wife, Carol, of Marble Rock; three grandchildren, Brittany, Lindsay, and Courtney Schrage; one brother, Linus Schrage and his wife, Sandy, of Charles City; one sister-in-law, Bernice Tapley, of Elma; and many nieces and nephews.
His parents preceded him in death.

MASON CITY - Teresa Arlene Milton, 88, died Saturday (March 9, 2002) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Rich Murray of First Covenant Church and Rev. Sarah Rohret of Odoom Grace United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Mason City.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and will continue until the service on Tuesday.
Memorials may be directed to the Teresa A. Milton Memorial fund.
Teresa Arlene Milton was born March 4, 1914, in Worth County, the daughter of John and Anna (Brattrud) Egan. She was raised in rural Hanlontown where she attended Hanlontown Consolidated Schools. She was united in marriage to Maurice V. Milton on Nov. 4, 1941, in Rolla, Mo. With the exception of several summers in Montana and Washington state they made their home in Mason City.
She worked as a housekeeper and a cook. She had an excellent reputation for her cooking. Friends and family looked forward to sharing her food.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
She enjoyed nature, traveling, dancing and most importantly, her family. She looked forward to the winters when she and Maurice could get to warmer climates.
She will be missed by all who knew her, but her memory will never be forgotten.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 60 years, Maurice V. Milton, of Mason City; daughter, Janice Clapper and husband, Dale, of Clear Lake; three grandchildren, Denise Powers and husband, Jeff, of Indian Mound, Tenn., David Clapper and wife, Christine, of Lake Park, Chad Clapper and wife, Angela, of Clear Lake; six great-grandchildren, Alicia Powers, Christina Powers, Dane Clapper, Dylan Clapper, Christian Clapper and Cassidy Clapper; sister, Eleanor Buttjer, of Mason City; several nieces and nephews.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Robert M. Dall, 92, died Friday (Feb. 21, 2002) at his home in Scottsdale.
A graveside service was held on Feb. 27, 2002, at Green Acres Cemetery in Scottsdale.
Robert was born on May 15, 1909, in Northwood, Iowa.
He was employed in various positions with Jacob E. Decker & Sons in Mason City, then the corporate offices of Armour & Company in Chicago, Ill. He then became general manager of Decker's and Amour, St. Paul, Minn. He retired as vice president of Armour in 1969.
He served in the Army in World War II, was a 32nd-Degree Mason, a Shriner, and president of the Hiram Club of Scottsdale in 1978.
His wife of 48 years, Elsie Bromley Dall, survives him, as well as his daughter, Nancy, and granddaughter, Kelly.
Messinger Indian School Mortuary in Scottsdale, Ariz. was in change of arrangements.

RAYMOND A. OLIEN
LIMA, Ohio - Raymond A. Olien, 60, of Lima Ohio, died Wednesday (March 6, 2002) at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.
He was born to Arnold and Hilma (Hovland) Olien on Jan. 26, 1942, in Albert Lea, Minn. He graduated in 1960 from Lake Mills High School in Lake Mills, Iowa.
He received a B.A. in Music Education from Luther College in Decorah, in 1965, M.A. in Music Education from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, in 1970 and a D.M.A. in Choral Conducting and Voice from the University of Illinois in Champaign, Ill., in 1981.
Until January 2002, he was Director of Choral Activities at Lima City Schools, Lima, Ohio. The Lima Choir of 1996 sang at Carnegie Hall in New York City and the 1998 Choir sang in the Tour of Choirs in Washington, D. C.
Previous to this he was Director of Choral Activities at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in Whitewater, Wis., Ohio State University-Newark in Newark, Ohio, Richland Center Public Schools in Richland Center, Wis., Burlington Area Schools in Burlington, Wis. and Harmony Area Schools in Harmony, Minn.
He was the Director of the Classic Arts Chorale in Newark, Ohio, and Director of Music at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Newark, Ohio.
He was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Lima, Ohio.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents and one nephew.
Survivors include his wife, Ellen (Churness) Olien whom he married Aug. 6, 1966; one son, Daniel, of New London, Ohio; two daughters, Elisa (Robert) Thomas of Columbus, Ohio and Jenna Olien of Dayton, Ohio; three brothers, Roger, of Scarville, Ronald (Karen) of Knoxville, Tenn., and David (Penny) of Beaverton, Ore.; two sisters, Janet (Gordon) Cavett of Lake Mills, Iowa and Marjorie (William) Watts of Cedar Rapids; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Mt. Sterling Lutheran Church in Mt. Sterling, Wis., with the Revs. Gloria Friedrich, Arthur Wilde and Roger Churness officiating, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Larson Funeral Home in Viroqua, Wis., with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. There will be additional visitation one hour before services on Wednesday at the church.
A memorial will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, 2002, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Lima, Ohio.

NORTHWOOD - Pastor Otto C. Staehling, 88, of Northwood, died Saturday (March 9, 2002) at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood with the Rev. Paul Holmer officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at First Lutheran Church in Northwood and also for one hour prior to services on Wednesday.
Conner Colonial Chapel of Northwood is in charge of the arrangements.

Otto was born May 4, 1913, in Myrtle, Minn., the son of Pastor J.O. and Anna M. (Ide) Staehling. He was baptized and confirmed by his father at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Myrtle, Minn. He attended grade school in Myrtle and in 1931 graduated from Albert Lea High School.
He graduated from Wartburg College in Clinton, Iowa, in 1935 and continued his education at Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque, graduating in 1938. On May 29, 1938, he was ordained at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Myrtle, Minn., by his father and installed as pastor of the Bethlehem congregation.
Pastor Otto was united in marriage to Ruth Studier at Bethlehem Lutheran Church on Aug. 21, 1938. He served as pastor there until September of 1969. From December 1945 until September 1969, he also served as Pastor at Zion Lutheran Church in Northwood, which later united with First Lutheran Church in Northwood.
From September 1969 until May 1972, Pastor Otto worked for Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minn., after which, he served as pastor at two congregations in North Dakota - Trinity Lutheran Kintyre and St. Andrew's Zeeland. In 1978, Pastor Otto and Ruth moved to Northwood where he served as chaplain at the Lutheran Retirement Home for six years.
Pastor Otto is survived by his wife, Ruth, of Northwood; two sons, David Staehling and his wife, Deanna, of Raytown, Mo. and Philip Staehling and his wife, Sheryl, of Bethany, Mo.; two daughters, Ruth Schlange and her husband, Darrell, of Palos Heights, Ill., and Mary Dick and her husband, David, of Streator, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, four sisters, and one great-grandchild.

GARNER - Carrol M. Bakken, 80, of Garner died Monday (March 11, 2002) at Mercy Medical Center - North Iowa in Mason City.
His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garner with the Rev. Robert Bronson officiating. Interment will be in Concord Township Cemetery with military rites by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

BONNA RHODA
ELMORE, Minn. - Funeral services for Bonna Rhoda, 86, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Elmore, with the Rev. Ben Buck officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery in Elmore.
Visitation will be held one hour before the services at the church.
Bonna Mae Rhoda was born Sept. 17, 1915, in Pilot Grove Township to George H. and Alice (Lowery) More. She was baptized in the Presbyterian Church in Pilot Grove. She attended country school and graduated from Elmore High School in 1932.
Bonna graduated from Brady and Rogers Beauty School and then opened a Beauty Shop in Elmore, Minn.
On Oct. 4, 1935, Bonna married Alfred C. Rhoda at her parents' home near Pilot Grove. She was later confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Three children were born to this union, Reta Mae, Elton Alfred, and Ramon Charles. They farmed in the community for many years and in 1969 moved into Elmore. Alfred passed away on Oct. 3, 1986.
Bonna passed away Monday (March 11, 2002) at St. Luke's Lutheran Home in Blue Earth, Minn.
Bonna is survived by her three children, Reta and her husband, Marvin Klipping, of Britt, Elton and his wife, Sharon Rhoda, of Elmore, Minn., and Ramon and his wife, Julie Rhoda, of Blue Earth, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Kristy Rhoda Travis, of Plymouth, Minn., Heidi Rhoda McCormick and Jeff of Apple Valley, Minn., Laurie Rhoda Jagerson and Terry of Elmore, Minn., Jeffrey and Mary Sue Rhoda, of Mason City, Janell Rhoda Maxa and Bill, of New Prague, Minn., Karmen Klipping Crowley and Bill of Britt, and Scott and Katie Klipping, of Clear Lake; nine great-grandchildren, Daniel, Monica, and Mindy Jagerson, Conor, Catherine, and Anne Marie Rhoda, Jack Maxa, Colby Klipping, and Kennedy Crowley. Bonna is also survived by three sisters, Jean and Willard Madetzke, of Blue Earth, Minn., Joyce and Dick Ripley, of Elmore, Minn.and Hazel Cooan of Blue Earth, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alice and George More; her brother, Ross More; and her husband, Alfred Rhoda.

MERRILL DONALD HANSON
MASON CITY - Merrill Donald Hanson, 75, of 673 14th St. N.E., died Sunday (March 10, 2002) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave. with the Rev. Bill Poland officiating. Interment will follow in St. Ansgar Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted at the cemetery.

Merrill Donald Hanson was born Aug. 30, 1926, the son of Sefred and Cora (Session) Hanson in Pope County, Minn., near Glenwood, Minn. Don attended school in Pope County. The family moved to Iowa in 1942. Don joined the Civil Conservation Corp. at the age of 15 in the fall of 1941 at Fergus Falls, Minn. doing forestry work, clearing wooded lots. He later farmed with his father and brothers until he was drafted.
On Nov. 18, 1944, Don entered into the United States Army, but at that time the Navy needed more men so he volunteered to join the Navy instead. Following active service, he was honorably discharged July 20, 1946, at Fort Snelling, Minn.
He returned to farm with his brother, Leo, and his wife, Avis, from 1947 until 1948. He then attained a job as a lineman with Central Iowa Telephone Company based in Toledo, Iowa, serving the Lyle, Minn. area.
On Nov. 17, 1950, he began working at the Decker Meat Packing Plant which later became known as Armour Foods. The old plant closed in 1975.
Don painted houses until the new plant was completed in 1978 when he returned to work. He retired Dec. 15, 1983, having dedicated 30-plus years of service.
Don was united in marriage on June 18, 1955, to Shirley Dippell in Austin, Minn.
He was baptized in the Methodist faith, and was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Mason City.
He was a member of the United Packing house workers Local P-38, served as Division Stewart, Safety Committee, and was a member of the VFW.
Don enjoyed all sports, the fishing trips to Minnesota with his family, the duck and deer hunting in Iowa and Wyoming. Vegetable gardens with tomatoes were his specialty.
Those thankful for having shared in Don's life include his wife, Shirley; two sons, Marshall Hanson and his special friend, Regina De Maris and her children, Rob, Jamie and Kellie of Dumont, and Randy Hanson and his special friend, Patty Cooper, of Mason City; one brother, Leo Hanson and his wife, Avis, of St. Ansgar; nieces and nephews, Priscilla Schulz, Jeanie Landeen, Gloria Hanson, all from Alexandria, Minn., Delores Mullen and her husband, Bruce, of Minneapolis, Minn., Beverly Rubenstein and her husband, Steve, of New Jersey, Dennis Hanson and his wife, Mary, of St. Ansgar, and Lisa Hansen and her husband, Jeff, of St. Ansgar.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Vera, and Ruth in infancy; brothers, Cecil, Theodore, and Harold; and many friends and relatives.

KLEMME - Gladys Emma Olthoff, 81, a lifelong resident of the Klemme, Iowa, area, died Monday (March 11, 2002) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
Gladys Griffen was born Jan. 22, 1921, on her parents' farm in Hancock County, rural Klemme. She attended and graduated from Klemme area rural schools.
Gladys was united in marriage to Fred Olthoff on Feb. 18, 1944, at the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ Parsonage in Klemme. Following their marriage and Mr. Olthoff's tenure in the service, the couple farmed in rural Klemme. In addition to farming with her husband, Gladys, was a lifelong homemaker.
The couple enjoyed playing cards in various clubs and with their family. They also enjoyed family picnics. Fred preceded his wife in death in 1965 at which time Gladys moved into Klemme where she had resided since.
After moving to town, Gladys, was employed as a custodian for the Klemme Grain Co-op for 20 years. She had also done domestic cleaning for many Klemme area residents over the years.
Mrs. Olthoff was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She loved to spend time with her family.
She was active in the Immanuel Reformed Church, teaching, Sunday school, Bible School, and had participated in the ladies guild there in earlier years.
Gladys very much enjoyed crafting, quilting, crocheting, and cooking. A favorite activity was baking treats for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Those left to cherish the legacy of Glady's life include: her daughters, Kathryn Sellers, and Eileen and her husband, Benjie Netland, of Klemme; one son, Verlyn and his wife, Kathy Olthoff, of Klemme; and a sister, Lida Eenhuis, Klemme; 12 grandchildren, Travis Olthoff, Tad Hartwig, Mark Wester, Jeremy Abele, Quint Askildson, Mike Branstad, Debra Askildson, Deanna Branstad, Teresa Wester, Kimberly Abele, Jennifer Olthoff, and Emily Civarelli; eight great-grandchildren, Mikala, Hannah, and Taylor Branstad, Cierra and Emma Askildson, Amanda Whitney, Samantha Wester, and Kaitlyn Abele. Also, three sisters-in-law, Elsie Berhow, of Kanawha, Fannie Ziegler, of Mason City, and Betty and her husband, Bill Jones, of Britt.
She was preceded in death by her husband; and sister, Mabel Griffen.

EDWIN 'BUD' W. TIGGEMANN
KLEMME - Edwin "Bud" William Tiggemann, 80, a longtime resident of the Klemme area, most recently a resident of the Concord Care Center in Garner, died Monday (March 11, 2002) at the care center.
Ed was born Jan. 22, 1921, at Goodell in Hancock County, Iowa, the son of William and Martha (Heginger) Tiggemann. He attended Klemme area public schools.
In his earlier life, he worked for various farmers in the area as a farm hand. He had also worked for the railroad for a time.
He was devoted to and employed as a carpenter and in various other positions by the Klemme Lumber Yard for 50 years. He loved to work there, and in later years very much enjoyed it when customers and friends would stop to visit with him.
Edwin had built many A-frame livestock houses and feed bunks for farmers in the North Iowa area. His company was known as "Tiggemann Portables" livestock buildings.
He had been a member of the Klemme Lions Clubs in the past. Ed moved to the Concord Care Center over three years ago, in November of 1998.
He enjoyed visits with his family, special friends and Kenny Weiland while residing at the care center.
He is survived by his sisters, Esther and her husband, Howard Tulp, of Goodell, and Velma Smith, of Mission, Texas; and two sisters-in-law, Fern Tiggemann of Mesa, Ariz., and Betty Tiggemann of Lebanon, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews. He also is survived by a special friend, Ken Weiland of Klemme.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert and Richard; and one nephew, Richard Tiggemann Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday at the United Methodist Church in Klemme with the Rev. Paddy Druhl officiating. Burial will be in Ell Township Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 12:30 p.m. until time of services on Friday at the church.

Raymond died on Monday (March 11, 2002) at his home at the age of 76.
Raymond was born Jan. 17, 1926, at Miltonville, Iowa, to Abner and Edna Lucy Carberry. He married Ella Carberry on Oct. 15, 1947, at Sioux Falls, S.D. Raymond grew up in Iowa and moved to Minnesota in the 1960s. He had lived in Albert Lea for the past 40 years.
Raymond worked for Streaters. He also had worked in construction. He was in the United States Navy.
Raymond was a member of the American Legion and V.F.W. and was a Gold Star parent.
He loved his family and especially his little Angel, great-granddaughter Vanessa Carberry. Raymond liked walking, fishing, hunting and dancing.
Raymond is survived by his sisters, Edith and husband, Lloyd Coy, of Shellsburg, Iowa, and Esther Carberry, of Tennessee; brothers, Marion Carberry of Mason City, Wayne Carberry of Arizona, Paul Carberry of Arizona, Art Carberry and wife, Vivian, of Mason City, Merle Carberry and wife, Lynn, of Illinois, and Howard Carberry and wife, Sharon, of Texas; granddaughter, Amber Carberry of Albert Lea; great-granddaughter, his little Angel, Vanessa Carberry; and a niece, Linda Harris of South Carolina.

GARNER - Carrol M. Bakken, 80, of Garner, died Monday (March 11, 2002) at Mercy Medical Center - North Iowa in Mason City.

Carrol Maurice Bakken, the son of Carl and Marie (Agrimson) Bakken, was born Aug. 13, 1921, on a farm near Sebeka, Minn., where he was baptized and confirmed in a Lutheran church.
He graduated from Sebeka High School in 1941 and remained on the home farm until 1943 when he attended Augsburg College. Carrol served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1947, serving most of his time on the U.S. Submarine Besugo in the Pacific Ocean.
On Nov. 29, 1947, he married LaVina Tendall at Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond. They lived on a farm south of Clarion until the spring of 1950 when they rented a farm north of Clarion. Seven years later, they purchased a farm south of Garner. While farming they also raised hogs and turkeys and owned and operated a grain storage and drying business.
Carrol was involved with founding Univcover Inc., which operated on the Bakken farm from 1975 until 1996, when a fire forced them to relocate east of Britt. In 1976, they moved into Garner.
Carrol and LaVina enjoyed traveling and spent part of each winter in California in their motor home. The highlights of their travel experiences were trips to Europe and Scandinavia.
Carrol was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where he served as treasurer and deacon and belonged to St. Paul Men's Club. He was a member of the Garner Rotary Club, Crown Jewel Development Corporation, Garner American Legion and the River City SCORE Chapter. He also served a term on the Garner City Council and was on the board of trustees for Prairie View Apartments for 21 years, serving one term as president.
He is survived by his wife, LaVina, of Garner; three children, James Bakken and his wife, Cheryl, of Forest City, Steve Bakken and his wife, Laurie, of Apple Valley, Minn., and Karen Swalve of Garner; eight grandchildren, Cheila Frayne and her husband, Bryan, of Garner, Brenda Simon and her husband, Eddy, of Mason City, Dawn Bakken of Mason City, Brad Bakken and his wife, Sara, of Garner, Alex Bakken of Apple Valley, Minn., Heather Swalve of Ames, Melanie Swalve of Cedar Falls and Joshua Swalve of Garner; five great-grandchildren, Bailee and Carlee Frayne, Caleb and Chelsea Simon and Brianna Bakken; four sisters, Benora Carlson and her husband, Roy, of Redlands, Calif., Viola Davis and her husband, Seth, of Vancouver, Wash., Alma Johnson, of Redlands, Calif., and Esther Crosby and her husband, Warren of Granite Falls, Minn.; three half-brothers, Milton Bakken and his wife, Zola, of Wanamingo, Minn., David Bakken of Owatonna, Minn., and Paul Bakken and his wife, Toni, of San Diego, Calif.; and one half-sister, Ruth Bolson and her husband, Roger, of Bloomington, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Annette; his parents; an infant grandson; a brother-in-law, Curtis Johnson; and a half-brother, Ronald Bakken.

WATERTOWN, S.D. - John Morris Learn, 97, formerly of Charles City, died Tuesday (March 12, 2002) in Watertown, S.D..
His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church, 601 Milwaukee St., Charles City, with the Rev. Dianne Christopher officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.
Visitation will be held from 8:30 a.m. until the time of services on Saturday at the church.

ALBERT GERRITSON
CHARLES CITY - Albert Gerritson, 84, of 2652 155th St., Charles City, died Thursday (March 14, 2002) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
His funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Charles City, with the Rev. Ruth Yeaton officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City. Military honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St. in Charles City, and from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday. Visitation will continue one hour before services at the church.
The family suggests that memorials be directed to the First Baptist Church.

EDWIN 'BUD' W. TIGGEMANN
KLEMME - Edwin "Bud" William Tiggemann, 80, a longtime resident of the Klemme area, most recently a resident of the Concord Care Center in Garner, died Monday (March 11, 2002) at the care center.
Ed was born Jan. 13, 1922, at Goodell in Hancock County, the son of William and Martha (Heginger) Tiggemann. He attended Klemme area public schools.
In his earlier life, he worked for various farmers in the area as a farm hand. He had also worked for the railroad for a time.
He was devoted to and employed as a carpenter and in various other positions by the Klemme Lumber Yard for 50 years. He loved to work there, and in later years very much enjoyed it when customers and friends would stop to visit with him.
Edwin had built many A-frame livestock houses and feed bunks for farmers in the North Iowa area. His company was known as "Tiggemann Portables" livestock buildings.
He had been a member of the Klemme Lions Clubs in the past. Ed moved to the Concord Care Center more than three years ago, in November 1998.
He enjoyed visits with his family, special friends and Kenny Weiland while residing at the care center.
He is survived by his sisters, Esther and her husband, Howard Tulp, of Goodell, and Velma Smith, of Mission, Texas; and two sisters-in-law, Fern Tiggemann of Mesa, Ariz., and Betty Tiggemann of Lebanon, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews. He also is survived by a special friend, Ken Weiland of Klemme.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert and Richard; and one nephew, Richard Tiggemann Jr.
His funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the United Methodist Church in Klemme, with the Rev. Paddy Druhl officiating. Burial will be in Ell Township Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 12:30 p.m. until time of services today at the church.
Memorials may be given to a charity of the donor's choice.

KARL FREDERICK GABELMANN
AMES - Karl Frederick Gabelmann, 77, of 1421 Stafford Ave. in Ames, died Tuesday (March 12, 2002) at the Riverside Manor Guest Home in Ames.
His funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City, with the Rev. John Amiel Anderson officiating. Interment will be held in the United Church of Christ
Pleasant Cemetery in Nashua.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home and will continue one hour before services on Saturday.
Karl was born on May 3, 1924, the son of William and Christina (Kehret) Gabelmann in Clarksville. He spent his childhood and obtained his education from the Butler County schools.
On Jan. 1, 1945, he entered the United States Army with the highest rank of Tech Sgt. Karl served in Rhineland and Central Europe. His military occupation was military intelligence, IRTC basic training, small arms mechanic, mail orderly and machine gunner- platoon leader. The decorations and citations that Karl received were the Marksman-Carbine SS Rifle, Combat Infantryman Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, Rhineland Silver Service Ribbon and two Overseas Service Bars. On July 11, 1946, he was honorably discharged and reunited with his family.
On May 7, 1944, Karl was united in marriage to Kathryn Nickles at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charles City. He was employed by NFO (National Farmers Organization) for 21 years.
Karl was a member of the American Legion in Garner.
He enjoyed woodworking, watching wrestling and eating out. Karl was devoted to his church and his family. He cherished the times spent with his children, grandchildren and great-great Grandchildren.
Karl is survived by his lovely wife, Kathryn; six children, Sandra Powell and her husband, Robert, of Clear Lake, Nancy Foster and her husband, Steve, of Mansfield, Texas, Fred Gabelmann and his wife, Mary Ann, of Derry, N.H., Leanne Chittester and her husband, Tom, of Glendale, Ariz., William Gabelmann and his wife, Marla, of Bettendorf, and Merrie Jo Reavis and her husband, Jeffrey, of Phoenix, Ariz.; one sister, Hulda Everding, of Tripoli; one brother, Walter Gabelmann, of Riceville; grandfather of 22 and great-grandfather of 11.
Karl was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and three sisters.

L. HAROLD CROSS
DOWS - L. Harold Cross, 86, died Wednesday (March 13, 2002) at his home in rural Dows.
His funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Dows, with Pastor Tony Hershey officiating. Burial will take place in the Fairview Cemetery in Dows.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Dows Community Funeral Home, 300 N. Lee St. in Dows, and will continue one hour before services on Saturday at the church.
Lewis Harold Cross was born on April 12, 1915, in Goldfield, the son of John Adam and Clara (Jostes) Cross. He attended elementary school in Goldfield and Eagle Grove. Harold's family then moved to Virden, Ill., where he graduated from Virden High School.
On May 17, 1941, Harold was united in marriage with Marjorie Norris at the home of her parents in Rowan. After their marriage, the couple farmed and made their home throughout central Iowa in communities that included Blairsburg, Rowan and Clarion. In 1956, Harold and Marjorie moved to a farm in rural Dows, where their home remains to this day. The past 17 years the couple spent winters in Texas.
Harold was a lifelong farmer. Initially, he worked for area farmers, and in 1945 he began farming by himself. He continued this legacy by remaining active on both his and his son's farms well into his 70s.
Harold's hobbies included being both a carpenter and a mechanic on the farm where he could spend time tinkering on projects. In addition, Harold enjoyed playing cards, dancing and delivering the Sunday newspaper.
Harold was a member of the Dows United Methodist Church.
Relatives left to cherish Harold's memory are his beloved wife, Marjorie, of Dows; four sons, Michael Cross and his wife, Evelyn, of Hampton, Galyn Cross of Dows, Neil Cross and his wife, Cheryl, of Des Moines and Douglas Cross and his wife, Rebecca, of Geneseo, Ill.; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four sisters, Lucille Schroeder and her husband, Eldon, of Beloit, Wis., Ethel Schroeder, of Rockford, Mich., Viola Pimper and her husband, Al, of Kearney, Neb., and Evelyn Kramer and her husband, Bud, of Minnetonka, Minn.; and many other nieces, nephews and friends.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, John and Clara; and two brothers, Everett and Mervin Cross.
