FOREST CITY - Sylvia Bungum, 86, formerly of Forest City, died Sunday (June 23, 2002) at her home in The Dalles, Ore.
 

Her funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City, with the Rev. Michelle Simonson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Forest City.

KARL HENRY RIETZ

ROWAN - Karl Henry Rietz, 89, of Rowan, passed away Saturday (June 22, 2002) at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo.

Funeral services for Karl Rietz will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Church of Rowan, with Pastor Janet Wearda officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery near Rowan.


 

Visitation for Karl Rietz will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick Lane S. in Belmond and one hour prior to services at the church.

Karl, the son of August Carl and Olive Rose (Azeltine) Rietz, was born May 27, 1913, in Rowan. He grew up and attended school in Rowan and graduated from Rowan High School in 1930.


 

Karl was united in marriage to Margaret Brandon on June 2, 1935, at her aunt's home in Clarion. The couple made their home in Rowan.


 

Karl helped his father butcher cows and started working for Rowan Lumber and Grain Company at age 13. He and his brother Edward bought the lumberyard in 1958. Karl loved the lumber business and served the community for many years.


 

After retiring in 1976, Karl and Margaret enjoyed traveling both within the United States and overseas. Their favorite trip was from Rowan to Lake Cornelia to Clarion and then back home. Karl also loved traveling in his RV, talking with friends, telling jokes, whistling at passers-by from his front porch, and coffee and doughnuts at the café.


 

Karl was an active member of the Rowan community. He belonged to the Masonic Lodge, Commandry and Shriners, and Rowan Volunteer Fire Department. He was a charter member of the Rowan Lions Club. Karl was also a Boy Scout leader and served on the Rowan city council.


 

He was an active member of the United Methodist Church and United Church of Rowan where he served on the church council, as Sunday School Superintendent, and sang in the choir.


 

Karl moved to the Belmond Care Center in November of 1997 and then to Manor Care in Waterloo in the fall of 1999.


 

Karl is survived by a son, Roger and his wife, JoAn, of Cedar Falls; a daughter, Carmen Jorgenson and her husband, Ted, of Fremont, Calif.; four grandchildren, Thomas and his wife, Karen, of Iowa City; Sarah Aldrich-Rietz, of Iowa City, Chad Jorgenson and his wife, Angie, of Antioch, Calif., and Doug Jorgenson, of Fremont, Calif.; three great-granddaughters, Thea and Emma Jorgenson and Leah Rietz; a sister, Muriel Licklider, of Clarion; a sister-in-law, Jean Rietz, of Washington; a brother-in-law, Everett Smith, of Wyomissing, Pa.; and many loving relatives and friends.


 

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret, in 1999; brothers, Edward and Paul; sisters, Ann Smith and Nina Heathershaw; two infant siblings; and a great-granddaughter, Margaret "Molly" Rietz.

MASON CITY - James F. "Jim" McLaughlin, 44, of 147 Granada Drive, died Tuesday (June 25, 2002) at home.


 

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave. with the Rev. Dennis A. Cahill, officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.


 

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, where a scriptural wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday.


 

James F. McLaughlin was born May 30, 1958, at Mason City, a son of Robert and Mary (O'Boyle) McLaughlin. He attended Mason City schools and was a 1977 graduate of Mason City High School.


 

Since graduation, Jim has worked on the railroad. In 1997, he became an engineer, and has worked on the Canadian Pacific (Soo Line) the past several years. Jim loved to discuss the railroad, politics and sports. A personal highlight for Jim, was winning the MVP award at ISU basketball camp at the age of 16.


 

He especially enjoyed following the New York Yankees, Minnesota Vikings and Twins, and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Spending time with his family and friends was very important to Jim. He also loved fishing and hunting


 

Jim was an active Railroad union member.


 

He is survived by, his parents, Bob and Mary McLaughlin, Mason City; three sons, Mike McLaughlin and his wife, Julie, Waukee; Kyle McLaughlin, Mason City; Dylan McLaughlin, Mason City; a granddaughter, Hannah McLaughlin, Waukee; one sister, Jan Larson and her husband Bob, Albert Lea, Minn.; two brothers, John McLaughlin and his wife, Kathy, Mason City; Jeff McLaughlin, Albert Lea, Minn.; nieces and nephews, Amy, Charlie, Nicki, John, Jessee, Adrian, Katie, Doug, Russell, Stephanie, Riley, and Ryan; great-nieces and nephews, Taylor, Josie, Melanie, Laura, Danielle, Kelly and Ben; Aunts and Uncles, Josephine Reeck and her husband, Norman, Des Moines; Pat McLaughlin and his wife, Darlene, Des Moines, and Joan McLaughlin, San Luis Obispo, Calif.; and cousins.

CHARLES CITY - Kevin Robert Hepperly, 25, of Charles City, died Tuesday (June 25, 2002) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.


 

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 106 Chapel Lane, Charles City, with Monsignor Stanley Hayek officiating. A graveside service will follow at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.


 

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, and also for one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Kevin was born Jan. 3, 1977 in Mason City, the son of Ronald and Sarah (Hamilton) Hepperly. He attended Wilson, Hoover and Roosevelt Elementary Schools in Mason City and Jefferson and Washington Elementary Schools in Charles City.


 

Kevin moved to Comprehensive Systems in Charles City in 1988 and graduated from Charles City High School in 1998.


 

He worked at the Labor Center in Charles City for several years.


 

Kevin was a very friendly person who enjoyed working at his job, long walks and spending time with his family, especially his grandfather. He also liked to watch cooking shows on television and spent as much time in the kitchen baking as he could.


 

Kevin is survived by his father, Ron Hepperly, of Mason City; two brothers, Dennis "DJ" Hepperly, of Charles City and Matthew Hepperly, of Mason City; his maternal grandparents, Bob and Ardeyth Hamilton, of California; three uncles and their spouses, Paul and Wilma Hamilton of Oklahoma, Gary and Dorothy Hepperly of Mason City, and Duane and Sandy Hepperly of Mason City; one aunt, Karen Hamilton of Pennsylvania, and many cousins.


 

He was preceded in death by his mother and his paternal grandparents.

DOROTHY STOLL

FOREST CITY - Dorothy Stoll, 84, formerly of Forest City, presently residing in St. Ansgar, died Wednesday (June 26, 2002) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Her funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City, with the Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Forest City.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until noon at Petersen Lund Funeral Home and from noon until time of services at the church.

Dorothy L. Stoll was born in St. Ansgar, on Feb. 16, 1918, to Sever and Lizzie Halverson. She was baptized and confirmed in the St. Ansgar First Lutheran Church. Dorothy attended the Carpenter Elementary School and the St. Ansgar Elementary and High Schools, graduating from the high school in 1935.

After being employed by the Central Iowa Telephone Co. in St. Ansgar, she was transferred to the Forest City Telephone Co.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Joseph Stoll on Nov. 7, 1940. To this union one son, David Allen, was born.

Beginning in 1952, Dorothy was employed by the Forest City Community School District for 31 years, serving as high school principal's secretary six years and 25 years as the superintendent and school board's secretary. She retired in 1983.

She is survived by one son, Dr. David Stoll, of Morgantown, W.Va. Also surviving are three grandsons, Scott of Irving, Texas, Robert of Tampa, Fla. and Timothy of Dallas; one granddaughter, Jennifer Johnson, her husband, Tim; two great-granddaughters, Morgan Lynn and Jordan Lynn of Morgantown, W.Va.; brothers, LaVern and wife, Verna, Jerry and wife, Mary Ann, all of St. Ansgar; a sister-in-law, Emma Halverson of Shoreview, Minn.; many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; her parents; her sister, Gladys Nelson; and brother, Stanford Halverson.

THOMPSON - Nathan J. Wicker, 25, of Thompson, died Wednesday (June 26, 2002).

Nathan J. Wicker was born in Forest City on Feb. 27, 1977, the son of Brad and Rose Marie (Keough) Wicker. He attended school in Forest City and graduated from Forest City High School.

Nathan worked for Winnebago Industries for a time and had most recently been employed with BC Pork in Buffalo Center.

He loved to fish and go camping. He was a big Vikings fan and enjoyed time spent with his nieces.

Nathan is survived by his parents, Brad and Rose Marie Wicker, of Forest City; fiancee, Enisa Bajric, of Thompson; two sisters, Danielle Wicker, of Forest City and Summer Callow and her husband, Josh, of Forest City; two nieces, Sadie and Lilie Callow. Also, maternal grandparents, Joe and Aileen Keough, of Forest City; paternal grandmother, Evelyn Wicker, of Casper, Wyo.; three uncles, Greg Keough, Ron Keough and wife, Jeanette, and Gregg Wicker; two aunts, Sandi Peterson and husband, Dennis, and Glenda Keough and husband, Tim; and father and mother-in-law, Sevko and Behija Hidanovic, of Forest City.

Nathan was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, James Wicker.

GENE RODRIGUEZ

MASON CITY - Gene Rodriguez, 54, of Melbourne, Fla., also known as "Chief and Little Black Bear," died Saturday, March 2, 2002, in Melbourne, Fla.

His funeral was held March 11, 2002, at Beach Funeral Home West Chapel in Melbourne, Fla. Interment followed at Melbourne City Cemetery with military honors.

Gene was born on March 27, 1947, in Mason City, to Lenora and Manuel Rodriguez.

He was a Vietnam veteran with three tours of duty with the United States Marine Corps.

Gene is survived by his daughter, Melissa Star Rodriguez; his mother, Lenora Rodriguez; aunts and uncles, Linda and John Gomez, and Tom and Lupe Caberea; and many cousins. His family will miss him greatly.

Memorial services will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, July 7, 2002, at the East Park Shelter No. 4 in Mason City. Family and all friends are welcome to attend.

CHARLES CITY-Esther A. Erickson, 93, formerly of 1304 S. Main, No. 1, Charles City, died Thursday (June 27, 2002) at Salsbury Baptist Home.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Dennis Niezwaag and Wayne Weissenbuehler. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Sunday, at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt, Charles City, and again one hour before services at the church.

ARDIS NELSON

BRITT - Ardis Nelson, 90, passed away Friday (June 21, 2002) at the Kahl Care Center of Bettendorf.

Memorial services for Ardis Nelson will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center St. W., Britt, with Mrs. Helen R. McLaughlin officiating. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

Ardis Lucille Nelson was born Feb. 21, 1912, in Britt, to Nels Peter Nelson and Dorthea Rasmussen Nelson. She was the fourth child in a family of three boys and three girls.

Ardis grew up in Britt and graduated from Britt High School in 1931 and the Britt Jr. College in 1934 with a teaching degree. She later took more teaching courses and graduated from the Mason City Junior College in 1957. She took additional course work from Drake University in Des Moines.

Ardis taught in the surrounding rural schools in Hancock County for 10 years. When the rural schools consolidated with the Britt Community School system, she became a member of that faculty and taught third grade until she retired in 1972. That allowed her to help out when one of her great nieces was born in 1974.

She was a long-time member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Britt. She was a member of the National and Iowa Retired Teachers Association, a 48-year member of the Rebekah Circle No. 334 of Britt and a 55-year member of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 68 of Algona.

Ardis was a gentle soul and was always concerned for the other person. It could be truly said that she never wanted to be a bother to anyone.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Carroll Nelson, of Britt; a brother-in-law, Norman (Jiggs) Rice; and seven nieces and three nephews, Linda Bass, of Mountain Ranch, Calif., Sharon Nehls, of Las Vegas, Margo Friemel, of Bettendorf, Alan Rice, of Ames, Ripple VanEngen, of Des Moines, Ava Nelson, of Palm Harbor, Fla., Lissa Honken, of Waukee, Rita Fett, of Wesley, Gary Nelson, of Kasson, Minn., and Mark Nelson, of Lynnwood, Wash. She also had 13 great- nieces and nephews; and five great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Edith (Mrs. Norman (Jiggs) Rice, and Bertha, (Mrs. Vernon J.) Nelson, of Las Vegas; brothers Vernon, Norman and Raymond, all of Britt; a nephew, Charles Raymond Nelson; and two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Joyce (Raymond) Nelson and Mrs. Mae (Norman) Nelson.

Memorials may be made to the Ardis Nelson Memorial Fund, which will be distributed to the Upper Flat Church of Britt and the Rebekah Circle No. 334 of Britt.

Jerry Dean Hanson was born in Sibley on Sept. 9, 1958, the son of Henry V. and Ruby (Carlson) Hanson. He was baptized at Center Lutheran Church, confirmed at Forest Evangelical Church and attended Forest City High School.

He served overseas in the US Army. Following his discharge from the service, he returned to Forest City.

He was self-employed, working for area farmers and most recently for Holland Construction.

He was a good friend to everyone and was always willing to help when needed.

He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.

PAUL H. HEFTY

CONRAD - Paul H. Hefty, 60, of Conrad, formerly of Clear Lake, died Wednesday (June 26, 2002) at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center in Marshalltown.

His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Derik Yarian of Zion Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City, with the Clear Lake V.F.W. conducting military honors.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Johnston Funeral Home in Conrad. Visitation will also be held from 9 a.m. on Saturday until time of services at the Colonial Chapel in Clear Lake.

Paul was born Jan. 4, 1942, in Kearney, Neb., the son of Paul H. and Louise M. (Bintz) Hefty Sr. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1960.

He then joined the United States Army and Green Berets. He served in Vietnam, where he did three tours of duty. He lived on the West Coast until 1978, when he came back to Clear Lake.

He worked for Best Way in Clear Lake from 1978-88, when they sold to Ritchie Industries in Conrad. He moved to Conrad and continued to work for them until 1995, when he retired because of ill health.

Paul married Jeanne M. Wood on July 5, 1980, in Clear Lake.

He belonged to the Conrad American Legion Post No. 681 in Conrad.

Paul enjoyed fishing, reading Western Books by Louis Lamour, and watching Nascar races.

Paul is survived by his wife, Jeanne M. Hefty, of Conrad; his mother, Louise M. Hefty, of Clear Lake; three sons, Darin Hefty, of Washington, David Hefty and his wife, Dannette, of Rapid City, S.D., and Stephen Neff, of Des Moines; one daughter, Dawn Neff and her fiancé, Mitch Skellenger, of Clear Lake; four grandchildren, Kendahl Hefty, Danae Hefty, Timothy Neff and Brooklyn Neff; one brother, Earl Hefty and his wife, Jo, of Clear Lake.

GERALD HEIMENDINGER

FOREST CITY - Gerald L. Heimendinger, 78, of Forest City, died Wednesday (June 26, 2002) at his home in rural Forest City.

His funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark in Forest City, with the Rev. Kevin Olson officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will begin at noon on Saturday and continue until time of service at the funeral home.

Gerald L. Heimendinger was born in Britt, on Sept. 19, 1923, the son of Harold and Martha (Lemke) Heimendinger. He received his education in Britt schools. He began farming in the Ventura area, moving to his present farm northeast of Forest City in the 1950s.

He married Jean Olson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua in September 1962.

Gerald enjoyed raising sheep, attending farm sales and gardening. He treasured time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Gerald is survived by his wife, Jean Heimendinger, of Forest City; a son and his wife, David and Mary Beth Heimendinger, of Scarville; two grandchildren, Adam and Zoe; a brother, Orville Heimendinger, of Osage; two sisters, Mary Ann Willrett, of Britt, and Arlene Sluik, of Manly.

DAGNY G. LENNING

LAKE MILLS - Dagny G. Lenning, 93, formerly of Lake Mills, died Saturday (June 22, 2002) at the Barthell Eastern Star Home in Decorah.

Her funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Winnebago Lutheran Church in rural Lake Mills, with the Rev. Bill Peters and the Rev. Christopher Lenning officiating. Burial will take place at Bristol Cemetery in rural Joice.

Visitation will be one hour before services at Winnebago Lutheran Church.

Dagny Gudrine Lenning was born Sept. 2, 1908, in Worth County, the daughter of Arne and Ida Langberg. On Dec. 28, 1929, she married John S. Roslien of Kensett. John passed away on Dec. 1, 1944. Dagny continued living on the Bristol Township farm until she married Trygve T. Lenning on April 6, 1963, and moved to the Lenning farm south of Lake Mills. Trygve passed away Nov. 8, 1986.

Dagny attended eight years of rural school in Worth County and started high school in Lake Mills. When her father died during her freshman year her mother needed her for work on the farm and her formal education ended.

For more than 40 years, Dale Holstad assisted her with management of the farm. She worked summers at the former Cool Springs Canning Co. in Lake Mills.

Much of Dagny's life centered on church activities at Bristol Lutheran Church and, later, at Winnebago Lutheran.

She found pleasure in gardening, growing flowers and, most especially, the numerous fishing trips to Leech Lake and Clear Lake with Trygve. A highlight during their marriage was the travel to Norway to visit their relatives.

Dagny lived in rural Worth and Winnebago counties until she entered the Lake Mills Care Center in 1987. She later moved to the Barthell Home in Decorah. Dagny passed away on Saturday (June 22, 2002) at the Barthell Home.

Surviving are two sons, David (Joy) Roslien, of Decorah, and Stephen (Judy) Roslien, of Madison, Mo.; one stepdaughter, Beverly (Jan) Lenning Kotzian, of Pleasant Hill; two stepsons, Oscar (Renie) Lenning, of Pleasant Hills, and David (Dianne) Lenning, of Olympia, Wash.; one stepdaughter-in-law, Leota Lenning, of Villa Park, Ill.

Dagny is survived by 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Mildred Roslien Citurs, of Mason City, and Barta Alsvig, of Jorpeland, Norway; and one brother-in-law, Oskar Alsvig, of Jorpeland, Norway.

Dagny was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; one stepson, Larry Lenning; and five half brothers and two half sisters.

The Lenning and Roslien families are deeply grateful for the loving support they have experienced in their loss.

Minnie Irene Pals, age 86, most recently a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center, a lifelong resident of the Belmond area, died Wednesday (June 26, 2002) at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Minnie Boelman was born June 25, 1916, in rural Belmond, the daughter of of Nysco and Fannie (Pals) Boelman. She attended rural schools in District 4 Pleasant Township.

Minnie was united in marriage to Raymond E. Pals on March 11, 1937, at the Reformed Church Parsonage in Meservey. Following their marriage, the couple farmed and raised their family in the local area. In addition to farming with her husband, Minnie was a lifelong home maker.

In the early 1980s the couple moved from the farm into Belmond, where they owned their own home for many years before moving to the Belmond Community Apartments. Raymond preceded Minnie in death on Jan. 23, 1994.

Minnie was a charter member of the Bethany Reformed Church in Belmond and a lifetime member of the Bethany Reformed RCW Ladies.

She was always a very family orientated person, who enjoyed spending times with her children, grandchildren, siblings and their families. She enjoyed the company of and visiting with friends and neighbors. A favorite pastime was reading. Minnie had resided at the Health Care Center for the past three and one-half years.

Those left to cherish the memory of her life include sons, Norman and his wife, Charlotte Pals, Wayne and his wife, Marilyn Pals, all of Belmond; daughter, Faye and Clyde Purcell, Kelso, Wash.; a son, Gary and his wife, Darlene Pals, of Belmond; brother, Jelto "Jake" and his wife, Janet Boelman; sister, June and her husband, Cecil Mosiman; and a brother, Roger and his wife, Lucille Boelman, all of Belmond; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Also sisters-in-law, Berneice Pals and Marcele Kottman, both of Thornton, and Mary Pals, of Cear Lake.

PETER J. KLOBERDANZ

OSAGE - Peter J. Kloberdanz, 89, of Osage, died Tuesday (June 25, 2002) at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 6, 2002, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage. Rev. Philip Recker will officiate. Inurnment for both Peter and his wife, Margaret, who died in December 2001, will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, July 5, 2002, at the funeral home, with rosary service at 6:30 p.m.

Pete was born March 9, 1913, in Topeka, Kan., the son of John Kloberdanz Sr. and Rose (Lauer) Kloberdanz, of German descent from Russia. He was the third oldest of 10 children and the first to be born in America. When he was 2 years old, the family moved to western Kansas and eventually to Waverly and Waterloo, Iowa, where they farmed. They moved to the Osage area in 1920.

Pete attended Orchard and Osage schools. The family moved to Chicago for three years, and Pete attended Lane Tech High School. The family returned to Osage, where Pete worked for several Main Street retail businesses as a teenager and young man. He became manager of the Corner Grocery on Main Street and oversaw the opening of grocery stores in Calmar, Rockford and Mason City.

During the World War II years, Pete purchased and ran the Osage Bowling Alley. After the war, he started the White Way Cleaners, which he operated for 30 years. He also owned and operated the Osage Laundromat, a Laundromat in Decorah and a dairy in Storm Lake. He was an Osage businessman for more than 64 years.

Pete and Margaret (Flowers) were married in 1939. Margaret taught school in Osage for many years. The couple were the parents of three sons, Monte and Murray of Osage, Michael of Las Vegas, Nev., and a daughter, Mary Margaret, who died in infancy.

In 1973, Pete and Margaret moved to their beloved cabin on the River Road, south of Mitchell. They remodeled it to become their permanent retirement home. Pete, a lifetime hunter and fisherman, enjoyed nature around his home.

He was a member of the Osage Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Knights of Columbus, Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Osage Bowling Hall of Fame.

Pete is survived by his three sons; his brothers, John of Osage, and Al, of Charles City; sisters, Katie Arickx, of Osage, and Leona Niddrie, of Florida; seven grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his daughter, two brothers, three sisters and his parents.

Linus was a farmer and owned and operated the Pooley Merfeld Grain Elevator in Hansell.


 

He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.


 

Linus enjoyed fishing and pheasant hunting. He enjoyed woodworking in his shop.

Maynard W. Mogk was born May 22, 1924, in Nora Springs, to William and Ellen (Schindler) Mogk.


 

On July 13, 1946, Maynard married Nora Thelma Johnson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.


 

One of his greatest joys was playing cribbage with his wife before her death.


 

His hobbies included gardening, finding asparagus patches and watching nature. His grandchildren added great joy to his life. We often said that he was growing up with his grandchildren.

Donald was born May 2, 1929, in Hendricks, Minn., the son of Olaf and Julia (Persson) Blomberg. He lived in Astoria, S.D., and then Sioux Falls, S.D., in 1942, where he attended Washington High School.


 

Don enlisted in the Army and served during WW II and the Korean Conflict. Following the service he moved back to Sioux Falls, S.D.


 

Donald married Janet "Jan" Peterson on March 9, 1957, in Bingham Lake, Minn. They lived in Sioux Falls until 1960, Bingham Lake until 1972 and Windom until 1987, when they moved to Clear Lake. While in Minnesota he worked at Toro Manufacturing.


 

Donald enjoyed reading the newspaper, keeping up on current events, having coffee with his friends and Polka music.


 

He was a life member of the Clear Lake V.F.W. 4868 Saratoga Post, D.A.V. and the International Association of Machinist Union Local 1956, Windom.


 

Donald is survived by three daughters, Darcy Johnson, of Mason City, Wendy Blomberg, of Clear Lake, and Judy Sidebottom and her husband, Jim, of Oxford Junction; one son, Tory Blomberg and his wife, Debbie, of Duluth, Minn.; six grandchildren, Derrick Palmer, Darren Palmer, Jennifer Blomberg-Breckenridge and her husband Troy, April Blomberg, J.D. SHEFFIELD - Bessie Priscilla James Rust, 98, a lifetime Sheffield resident, died Thursday (June 27, 2002) at home.


 

Graveside Services will be held 10:30 a.m. today at Hillside Cemetery in Sheffield, with the Rev. Remigio P. Panlaqui officiating. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.


 

Bessie was born Nov. 6, 1903, to Edgar and Bessie (Williams) James at Sheffield. She attended Sheffield schools and graduated with the class of 1922.


 

On Dec. 31, 1958, Bessie was united in marriage with Joseph Rust.


 

She was a lifetime member of First United Methodist Church, where she served as Sunday school superintendent.


 

She was a member of the Rebecca Lodge and the Sheffield Cemetery Society.


 

She is survived by four stepchildren, Myrtle Rust, of Marietta, S. C., Wilbur Rust, of Sheffield, JoAnn Dunlavey, of Buckingham, and Esther Miller, of Mt. Holly Springs, Pa.

FERTILE - Harold M. "Moke" Ouverson, 86, of Fertile, died Thursday (June 27, 2002) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Harold "Moke" was born Dec. 19, 1915, in Fertile, the son of Martin P. and Christina (Erickson) Ouverson. He attended Fertile High School, graduating in 1933.


 

In 1941, Moke enlisted in the U.S. Army. During WWII he served in the Pacific Theatre, Guadalcanal. Following the service he came back to Fertile to work on the family farm.


 

Moke married Ruth Smidt on March 7, 1945, at the Methodist Church in Forest City. In 1957 Moke and Ruth started the Ouverson Oil Station & Tank Wagon, operating it for 35 years. Moke loved the soil and his country.


 

Moke was a member of the Church of Christ in Fertile, the Clear Lake V.F.W. and the Mason City DAV. He was a former Brush Point Cemetery board member.


 

Moke is survived by his wife, Ruth Ouverson, of Fertile; three children, Mike Ouverson and his wife, Nancy, of Worthington, Terry Ouverson, of Herndon, Va., and Kris Ouverson, of Rochester, Minn.; daughter-in-law, Dixie Harrison, of Centreville, Va.; four grandchildren, Jennifer Ouverson and James Ouverson, of Centreville, Va., Tim Ouverson, of Worthington, and John McCormick, of Cedar Rapids; one sister, Edna Hill, of Forest City; and many nieces and nephews.

FERTILE - Helen W. Thompson, 93, of Fertile died Saturday (June 29, 2002) at Heritage Care Center in Mason City.

GARY I. STOEFFLER

NEVADA - Gary I. Stoeffler, 58, of Nevada died of complications from a bone marrow transplant on Friday (June 28, 2002) at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Nevada with the Rev. Jon Seda officiating.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada.

Gary was born April 10, 1944, in Ames to Irwin and Ruth (Zook) Stoeffler. He was a 1963 graduate of Nevada High School.

Gary married Marcia Bender on March 23, 1968, in Mason City. He had been employed for 37-1/2 years in the printing business and also had done photography. Gary also worked with his good friends, Ron and Mary Fincham, at Ron's Sporting Goods in Nevada.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Nevada and served on the board for the Parks and Recreation Department. He had coached soccer and little league baseball. He loved all sports, especially golf, baseball and football. He loved the Atlanta Braves, Iowa State Cyclones and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

He also loved to golf with his boys and friends, and enjoyed doing wood projects and spending time with grandchildren, family, friends and especially his loving wife, Marcia. He is a lifelong resident of Nevada.

Gary is survived by his wife, Marcia, of Nevada; three sons, Shane Stoeffler and his wife, Jody, of Council Bluffs, Shannon and his wife, Kristen, of Knoxville, and Shad and his wife, Amy, of Mason City; five grandchildren; SenaMarie, Sharlyn, Spencer, Brock and Blake Stoeffler; three brothers, Butch Stoeffler and his wife, Donna, Kent Stoeffler, and Jan Stoeffler and his wife, Marty, all of Nevada; two sisters, Sue Streeter and her husband, Max, of State Center, and Becky Johnson and her husband, Bob, of Colo; sister-in-law, Jane Bender, and brother-in-law, Mike Bender, both of Mason City; mother-in-law, Marcille Bender of Mason City; seven nephews, three nieces, 12 great-nephews and three great-nieces.

Gary is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Bradley Stoeffler, and father-in-law, John "Jack" Bender.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Larry L. Scheef, 65, of Birmingham, Ala., and formerly of St. Louis, Mo., and Mason City, died Friday (June 28, 2002) at his home in Birmingham.

DOWS - Grace Polzin, 91, of Dows and formerly of Popejoy and Alden, died Friday (June 28, 2002) at the Hampton Health Care Center in Hampton.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Lutheran Church in Dows with the Rev. Paul Thompson officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Dows.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Dows Community Funeral Home, 100 N. Lee St. in Dows, and will continue one hour before services at the church.

ALVIN B. TWEETEN

FOREST CITY - Alvin B. Tweeten, 87, of Forest City died Thursday (June 27, 2002) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

His funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Winnebago Lutheran Church in rural Lake Mills. Burial will be at the Hanna Cemetery in rural Forest City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St., Forest City.

Alvin Benone Tweeten was born to Gilbert and Cora (Myre) Tweeten on Aug. 4, 1914, in Mt. Valley Township near Joice. He was baptized and confirmed at Winnebago Lutheran Church, graduated from Lake Mills High School and attended Waldorf Academy.

Alvin was united in marriage to Cecel Samuelson of King Township on June 4, 1939. They farmed different farms in the area until 1947, when they purchased and moved onto Grandpa Myhre's place. On June 4, 1989, Cecel passed away after 51 years of marriage. Alvin was united in marriage to Mattie Dorothy (Bartleson) Heimdal on Nov. 24, 1990.

An avid singer with the Forest City Barbershop Chorus, he sang from the first to last concert over 17 years. Alvin served on the Forest City Co-op Elevator Board of Directors for several years and also the Winnebago County Election Board. Along with Alvin's talent for farming, he genuinely loved every aspect of horses, attending shows and sales.

Survivors include his wife, Mattie; stepchildren, Elaine and Kent Dory of Cambridge; Martha and Andrew Abraham of Champlin, Minn.; Randy and Marcia Heimdal of Lucas; Ed and Karen Heimdal of Charles City; step-grandchildren, Jeff and James Kling, Paul and Julie Dory, Michelle, Marsha, Mark Abraham, Tricia and Jason Heimdal; and step-great-grandchild, Alexis Kling; siblings, Olive Gilbertson and Ruth and Stanford Holtan of Forest City, Jim and Ruth Tweeten of Lake Mills, Stanley and Bess Tweeten of Manly, Luther and Eloyce Tweeten of Columbus, Ohio, and Maynard and Marilyn Tweeten of Joice.

Preceding Alvin in death were his parents; his wife, Cecel; stepmother, Mae Dahlby Tweeten; brother-in-law, Leonard Gilbertson; and stepbrother, Komer, and wife, Marian Johnson.

ALGONA - Lillian H. Thilges, 95, of Algona died Friday (June 28, 2002) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

BUFFALO CENTER - Ted Albers, 92, of Buffalo Center died Friday (June 28, 2002) at Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center.

RUDD - Douglas V. Halsted, 60, of 611 Taylor St. in Rudd, died Friday (June 28, 2002) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock High School in Rockford with the Rev. Walter Brunkan of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Roseville officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Rockford.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the gymnasium of the school. A parish wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

MARILYN R. THOMPSON

AMANA - Marilyn Ruth Thompson, 77, of Amana and Riverdale, died Wednesday (June 26, 2002) at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids.

Her funeral will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Cunnick-Collins Mortuary Chapel, 1200 E. 39th St. in Davenport. Burial will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery.

HAMPTON-Harold B. Springer, 87, of Hampton died Friday (June 28, 2002) at Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

His funeral will be 11:30 a.m. Monday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, 306 Central Ave. E. in Hampton with the Rev. Glen Bandel officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.

H. DARLENE (VAN ZOMEREN) VANDER POL

WEST DES MOINES - H. Darlene Vander Pol, 65, of West Des Moines and formerly of Mason City, died of lung cancer Saturday (June 15, 2002) at Kavanagh House in West Des Moines.

A funeral service was held on June 19, 2002, at the First Reformed Church in Pella. Interment was at Portergrove Cemetery outside of Pella.

Hilda Darlene Van Wyk was born on April 16, 1937, on a farm near Sully, Iowa. She was the 10th and youngest child of Neal and Hilda Van Wyk. Darlene attended Pella High School and graduated in 1954. Following graduation, she attended Central College in Pella and received a teaching certificate. She began her teaching career at age 19 and taught in Emmetsburg and Grinnell before returning to Pella.

She married Dick W. Van Zomeren on Dec. 23, 1958, at the First Reformed Church in Pella and to this union four children were born, Elizabeth Anne, Amy Jo, Jane Ann and Joel Dick.

Darlene lived in Mason City from 1970 to 1993. She was a dedicated homemaker and encouraged her children in a variety of academic, athletic and extracurricular activities. She returned to school in the late 1980s and received a B.A. from Buena Vista University.

Upon graduation, she continued to work with students who faced mental, physical and emotional challenges. She also taught adults and assisted many in obtaining a General Education Diploma (GED). Darlene made a difference in the lives of many children and adult learners. She will be remembered for the love she showed her family, her creativity and her passion for teaching.

In April of 2002, Darlene was diagnosed with the fourth and final stage of lung cancer in the emergency room at Methodist Hospital. Darlene faced the prognosis with strength and determination to live each day to the fullest. Most recently she was a substitute teacher in Des Moines and taught for several days after learning that she had cancer. She entered Hospice on May 25th following a brief hospital stay.

She is survived by her spouse of nine years, Wayne D. Vander Pol of Merriam, Kan.; her four children and their spouses and their children, Elizabeth Van Zomeren and Ross Harris of Edina, Minn., Amy and Tom Donnelly, of Des Moines, Jane and Michael Schwartz of Scottsdale, Ariz., Joel and Stephanie Van Zomeren of Burnsville Minn.; grandchildren, Kathleen, Frances and Robert Donnelly, Amela and Anela Suljic, Christopher and Jeanette Van Zomeren and William and Claudia Schwartz.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.

All memorials sent as an expression of sympathy will be used to help build a new church and furnish Sunday School classrooms in her honor. Memorials may be directed in her name to Des Moines Christian Reformed Church, 5001 Hickman Road, Des Moines, Iowa, 50310.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the many friends who sent flowers, gifts and cards to Darlene while she was in Hospice. We are grateful for your many prayers and compassion shown to her during the last few weeks of her life. Special thanks to Don and Joan Ryerkerk of West Des Moines (formerly of Mason City), who were such faithful friends.

JOHN PAUL GRUBE

ROCKFORD - John Paul Grube, 88, formerly of 601 Ninth St., Charles City, died Thursday morning (June 27, 2002) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Church in Charles City. Officiating will be Monsignor Stanley Hayek. Interment will be at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.

Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Monday at Fullerton Schumburg Funeral Home, 302 W. Main, Rockford, and again one hour before services at the church. A parish wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Paul was educated at a country school in Howard County and then graduated from Charles City High School. Following graduation, he was employed at the Servus Rubber Plant in Rock Island. In 1940 he moved south of Nora Springs, where he farmed until retiring in 1994 and then moved to Charles City.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church. He loved to tinker with all kinds of machinery. John raised livestock, including Black Angus cattle. He was an avid reader of all types of material and liked listening and watching basketball and baseball. In his early life, he also worked for the Conservation Corps.

On June 19, 1943, Paul was united in marriage to Stella Zieman at Holy Name Catholic Church in Rockford. She preceded him in death on May 9, 1983. He later was married to Gladys Theis on Oct. 1, 1994, at Immaculate Conception Church in Charles City. She also preceded him in death.

John is survived by one brother, Ralph, and his wife, Angie Grube, of Charles City; two sisters, Florence Roberts, Charles City and Marcella Boynton, Fort Madison; his brother-in-law, Gene Gallant, Charles City, and several step-children and many nieces and nephews.

VICTOR 'MEL' LONG

CLEAR LAKE - Victor "Mel" Long, 76, of 121 N. 15th St., Clear Lake, died Friday (June 28, 2002) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with Chaplain Kathy Graves of Hospice of North Iowa officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery in Clear Lake with military honors by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday with a Moose service at 6 p.m., then one hour prior to services on Tuesday at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorials to Hospice of North Iowa.

Mel was born Dec. 3, 1925, in Clear Lake, the son of Edward Melvin and Sena Violet (Jenson) Long. After attending Clear Lake High School, he worked for Miller's Dairy in Clear Lake. He married Mary Olson on May 19, 1945, in Clear Lake.

Mel served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Following the service, he came back to Clear Lake and started working for State Brand Creamery. In 1951, he started working for the Cerro Gordo County road maintenance department and later was foreman, retiring in 1988.

Mel enjoyed traveling, spending the winters in Texas, woodworking, reading westerns, square dancing and country dancing.

He was a member of the Mason City VFW, Moose Lodge, Eagles Lodge and the Clear Lake IOOF.

Mel is survived by his wife, Mary Long, of Clear Lake; son, Harvey Long and his wife, Judy, of Lake Geneva, Wis.; daughter, Judy Merriss, of Bettendorf; half-sister,Margaret Ann Collins; five grandchildren, Michelle Merriss, of Clear Lake, Brian Long and his wife, Connie, of Wichita, Kan., Mikal Long and his wife, Dulce, of Fredericksburg, Va., Laura Fallon and her husband, Rodney, of Newton, and Sara Long, of Mesa, Ariz.; and eight great-grandchildren, Jacob Fallon, Hope Long, Victoria Long, Emily Fallon, Hunter Long, Jade Long, Mikal Long and Capitola Long.

His parents and two brothers, Andrew and Lloyd Long, preceded him in death.
