ST. ANSGAR - Roy L. Hanson, 93, of St. Ansgar, died Saturday (Jan. 5, 2002) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

RUSS ANDEREGG
MASON CITY - Russ Anderegg, 80, of 16941 245th St., died Saturday (Jan.5, 2002) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
A funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 5th St S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Carl A. Ries officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., Monday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St N.E., Mason City, where a scriptural wake service will be held at 7 p.m., followed by a Knight's of Columbus rosary.
Memorials, in memory of Russ may be given to North Star Charitable Trust, in care of Dan Anderegg, 15050 Quail Ave, Mason City, Iowa 50401, to be used to provide scholarships for students attending Newman Catholic schools.
Russ was born Oct. 4, 1921, at West Bend, a son of Harold and Rosetta (Williams) Anderegg. He married Lillian Hogan on Feb. 16, 1944, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dougherty.
Russ attended school at West Bend and was a 1938 graduate of Rockford High School. A farmer in Cerro Gordo County for 50 years, Russ also worked at the sugar beet plant in Mason City for several years, and later at Allied Mills for 15 years. Russ was a Pioneer Seed Corn representative for 22 years.
In 1970, he assumed his father's insurance business, Anderegg Insurance, representing Cerro Gordo Mutual Insurance and IMT Insurance.
Russ will be remembered for his passion for Newman. Athletics, education, booster club, God's Portion Day, the Newman Open, any event which involved or supported Newman Catholic, Russ would lend his support.
He loved all Newman sporting events, especially baseball. He enjoyed high school wrestling, the Cleveland Indians, the Maid Rite, traveling Cerro Gordo County, and fishing in Canada with his friends.
His memberships and activities include: St. Joseph Catholic Church; Knight's of Columbus; Cerro Gordo County Mutual Insurance Board; Newman Foundation Board; and Newman Booster Club, where he had served as its president.
Russ is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lillian Anderegg of Mason City; five sons, Jim and his wife, Joleen, of Nora Springs, John and his wife, Kathy, of Mason City, Tom and his wife, Jan, of Dubuque, Dan and his wife, Linda, of Mason City, and Marty and his wife, Leigh Anne, of Des Moines; 13 grandchildren, Mike and his wife, Molly, Steve and his wife, Elizabeth, Jennifer Hingst and her husband, Phil, Jeff and his wife, Tamara, Michele and her boyfriend, Cory, Jason, Abby, John Joseph, Ben, Joe, Josh, Robbie and Katie; four great-grandchildren, Patrick, Andrew, Lillian and Emma; four sisters, Phyllis Ferrier of Clear Lake, Joyce Marzen of Marble Rock, Ramona Schneck of Sheffield and Mary Peter of Sheffield; one brother, Darvin Anderegg of Charles City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Ardys Butler; and one brother, Raymond Anderegg.

RILEY EDWARD BONNIN
MASON CITY - Todd A. and Julie J. Bonnin announce the birth of their special angel, Riley Edward, born Jan. 3, 2002, at 9:25 a.m. He stayed long enough to silently touch our hearts before he died on Jan. 3, 2002.
Those left to cherish his precious memory include: his parents, Todd A. and Julie J. MASON CITY - Lucille E. Holub, 90, of 540 11th St. N.E., died Thursday (Jan. 3, 2002) at Good Shepherd Health Center.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City, with the Rev. Douglas Anderson of First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow.
Visitation will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City.
Lucille was born April 18, 1911, in Mason City, the daughter of Joe J. and Maud M. (Cowell) Holub. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1929.
Lucille was a caretaker and homemaker her entire life, providing care for a number of aged relatives as well as her parents. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Mason City.
She is survived by a cousin, Gwen Bond, of Mason City; and two second cousins, Jim Bond, of Mason City and Harry Allan, of Minnesota.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

BARBARA MEIER
NORTHWOOD - Barbara (Torgerson) Meier, 69, of Northwood, died Thursday (Jan. 3, 2002) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. She had been in declining health for a number of years.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 South, Northwood, with the Rev. Allen Stoa officiating. Private inurnment will take place at the South Shell Rock Cemetery in Northwood.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, where friends may call at the funeral home one hour before the service.
Barbara was born Feb. 7, 1932, on a farm east of Northwood, to Alfred and Viola (Helgeland) Torgerson. She was educated in Worth County starting with country school at Brookfield No. 1 and Brookfield No. 3, entering the Northwood school system in 1940, and graduating from Northwood High School in 1950.
Barbara worked briefly in the Anchor office, the Northwood Theater and, for several years, as a switchboard operator in the local telephone office. Barbara was united in marriage to Ken Meier at Manly in a wedding ceremony officiated by her paternal grandfather, the late Rev. A.J. Torgerson. Later the couple relocated to the Chicago area as Ken pursued a career in the trucking industry. Upon his retirement in 1993, they returned to Northwood.
Barbara's special interests included cats, extensive reading, indoor flowers and bird watching.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ken; a son, Kyle; a sister, Margaret; and her parents.
Barbara is survived by her son, Kal and his wife, Pam, of LaPorte, Texas; and a brother, Don Torgerson, of Yorba Linda, Calif.

ST. ANSGAR - Roy Leonard Hanson, 93, of St. Ansgar, died Saturday (Jan. 5, 2002) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Roy Leonard Hanson was born on Nov. 17, 1908, in Worth County, rural Carpenter, to Hans Peter and Lena (Severson) Hanson. He became a child of God in baptism on Dec. 26, 1908, at the Deer Creek Lutheran Church in Carpenter, with the Rev. M. E. Waldeland officiating. He was confirmed March 16, 1923, by Rev. M. E. Waldeland. He graduated from the Carpenter High School in 1925 and was the last living member of this class.
He never married and lived his life on the farm where he was born and raised. He began renting his cropland out in 1978 while continuing to raise Herefords. Roy took pride in raising top quality Hereford cattle. A pair of his calves were featured on the June 1979 front cover of the American Hereford Journal. Roy also served on the board of directors and then as president of the Worth County Coop Oil from 1954 to 1975.
Roy entered the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center in November 1999.
He was preceded in death by his father, in 1912; his mother, in 1955; a brother, Mervin, in 1929; a brother, Alfred, in 1969; and a sister, Gilma Hendrickson, in 2000.
Left to cherish his memory are his neices and nephews and their families, Ivadene Dale of San Jose, Calif., Horace Hendrickson and his wife, Ann of Northwood, Marcella Olson and her husband, Ron of Apple Valley, Minn., Ardis Sorenson and her husband, Carroll of Thornton, Colo., Duane Hanson and his wife, Sharon of Thompson, N.D., Merle Hanson and his wife, Jeanette of Northwood, Sharyl Engelhardt and her husband, Jon of Adel, Ivanell Howard and her husband, Earle of Grandby, Colo., and Audrey McIntosh and her husband, Richard of Jefferson City, Mo.
Roy was a delight to all of us with his wit and his sharp mind.

MASON CITY - Edward "Ed" A. Scarrow, 88, of Mason City, died Saturday (Jan. 5, 2002) at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m.Tuesday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Daird Korth officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Bristow.

The family of Edward "Ed" A. Scarrow has requested that memorial contributions be made in his memory.
Edward "Ed" A. Scarrow was born on a farm home in rural Franklin County, near Hansell, on July 28, 1913, the son of Arthur and Evelyn (Schuler) Scarrow. He attended and graduated from Hansell High School in 1932. After completing his schooling, he farmed in the North Iowa area. He was united in marriage to Elva Meyer on July 3, 1935, at the Union Ridge Country Church between Hansel and Dumont, and lived in the North Iowa area for several years before moving to Mason City. Ed worked for the Lehigh Portland Cement Company for 25 years until his retirement in 1978.
He enjoyed gardening, fishing, listening to Western audio books, was an avid Hawkeye basketball fan and Minnesota Twins baseball fan, but his great love and enjoyment was his family and grandchildren, and going to his grandchildren's activities. Ed also loved caring for and helping others.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Elva Scarrow of Mason City; children, Susan Frohling and her husband, Mike of Meservey, and Cindy Simmer of Mason City; daughter-in-law, Helen Scarrow of Mason City; grandchildren, Mike Scarrow and his wife, Karen of Mason City, Thad Scarrow and his wife ,Teresa of Des Moines, Brent Scarrow and his wife, Linda of Clear Lake, Lance Scarrow and his wife,Tanya of Mason City, Bill Hicok of Meservey, Rick Simmer of Sioux Falls, S. STACYVILLE - Martin (Teenie) Simon, 86, of Stacyville, died Saturday (Jan. 5, 2002) at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, with the Rev. Joseph Schneider officiating. Interment will be in the Visitation Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville with a Forester Rosary at 4:30 p.m. and Scripture Service at 7 p.m.
Martin was born Nov. 11, 1915 in Stacyville, the son of Jacob and Anna (Heaman) Simon. He was a lifelong Stacyville resident, attending Catholic school and graduating from Visitation Catholic High School.
He was an avid fisherman and cribbage player. He was a member of Visitation Catholic Church and the Catholic Order of Foresters.
Martin is survived by two sisters, Elizabeth Taylor of Waterloo, and Margaret Anderson and her husband, James of Cedar Falls; a brother, Alfred Simon of Austin, Minn.; and nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Angeline; a sister, Marcelline Miller; and a brother, Ralph Simon.

GLENN W. MARKHAM
OSAGE - Glenn W. Markham, 84, of Osage, died Thursday (Jan. 3, 2002) at Faith Home in Osage.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage, with the Rev. Philip Recker officiating. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.
Glenn was born March 24, 1917, in Burr Oak Township, Mitchell County, the son of William O. and Adeline (McGrane) Markham. Glenn attended country schools.
He was united in marriage to Shirley Duenow on March 31, 1937. They farmed in Burr Oak Township until 1965 when they moved to Osage. They owned and operated the Plaza Café for 17 years until retirement. They have continued to live in Osage.
Glenn was a life-time member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Lions Club, and the Farm Bureau.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Duenow Markham of Osage; five sons, William and his wife, Elaine "Dolly" Markham of Albuquerque, N.M., Ronald and his wife, Kristine Markham of Parkers Prairie, Minn., Richard and his wife, Marjorie Markham of Osage, Robert and his wife, Kate Markham of Lakeside, Calif., Keith and his wife, Jessica Markham of Gig Harbor, Wash.; four daughters, Janice and her husband, John Dempsey of Osage, Barbara Markham of Osage, Joan Blake of St. Ansgar, Patricia and her husband, Roger Karau of Savage, Minn.; a brother, James Markham and his wife, Ruth of The Rock, Ga.; a sister, Katherine and her husband, Frank Laskos of Oregon, Ill; 24 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

ELEANOR G. LEHN
MASON CITY - Eleanor G. Lehn, 88, of 730 N. Carolina Ave., died Thursday (Jan. 3, 2002) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Fullerton Family of Funeral Homes, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City. Officiating will be the Rev. Doug Anderson of First United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Eleanor Grace Lehn was born on May 16, 1913, the daughter of Samuel and Mary (Specht) Currier at Fowler, Kan. She was one of seven children. She graduated from Plains Kansas High School where she had the distinction of being an All State Basketball Guard every year for three undefeated seasons. She went on to graduate from Witchita Business College.
On Aug. 15, 1953, Eleanor was united in marriage to Howard Glenn Lehn in Kansas City, Mo. She and her husband then moved to Mason City where she was employed as a bookkeeper at Gildner's Clothiers. She became the credit manager at Park Hospital and then the office manager for the North Iowa Girl Scout Council, retiring in the early 1980s.
She and her family enjoyed many years of camping, traveling, golf and taking long walks with her dogs, Spooky and Penney. She was a great lover of animals and passionate about her husband and family.
She will be greatly missed by her family and multitude of friends, including her husband of 48 years, Howard of Mason City; her two daughters, Jeanette Colleen Dempsey of Omaha, Neb., Phyllis and her husband, Joe Waters of Oakhurst, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Cynthia and her husband, Barry Schrag, Christine Dempsey, Bradley and his wife, Mary Dempsey, Brian Dempsey, Joe and Jason Waters, and Jeff and his wife, Anissa Waters; 10 great- grandchildren; and three sisters, Ruth Miller of Plains, Kan., Clarice McCarty of Meade, Kan., and Jeanne Marx of Plains, Kan.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Vaneta McGill, and Ester Hayes; and one brother, Robert Currier.

JULIA I. HANSON
MASON CITY - Julia I. Hanson, 87, of 501 S. Kentucky Ave., died Sunday (Jan. 6, 2002) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with Rev. Kenneth Hatland, officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, and one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.
Julia I. Hanson was born April 3, 1914, at Albert Lea, Minn. a daughter of William and Mary (Huber) Sippel. She was a graduate of Albert Lea High School.
She was united in marriage to Elmer O. Hanson on Oct. 15, 1938.
Mrs. Hanson resided at Heritage Care Center, Mason City for the past two years, where she received excellent care.
Julia's husband operated a Mobil service station in Mason City. They farmed for several years in the Lake Mills and Northwood areas and near Dexter, Minn. Moving to Rudd in 1963, they purchased a grocery store, which they operated as Hanson's Superette, until retirement in 1973. After her husband's death in 1978, Julia moved to Mason City.
Mrs. Hanson will especially be remembered for her jelly rolls and sugar cookies.
She is survived by one son, Everett Hanson and his wife, Kathy, of Hugo, Minn.; two daughters, Judy Hoy and her husband, Jerry, of Nashua, and Jane Balkenende and her husband, Jack, of Mason City; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Louise Kirby, of Woodbury, Minn., and Irene Enstad, Albert Lea, Minn., and a sister in law, Marge Sippel, of Albert Lea, Minn.

LAKE MILLS - Albert J. "Al" Ingebritson, 89, died Thursday (Dec. 6, 2001) at the Lake Mills Care Center.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, with the Rev. Roger Dykstra officiating. Inurnment will take place at Salem Lutheran Cemetery in Lake Mills.
Al was born Jan. 27, 1912, in Lincoln Township in Winnebago County. He was the sixth child born of 11 children and grew up on various farms in Winnebago County.
He met Irma Weed and they married on Jan. 5, 1936. Al and Irma lived in Thompson for several years before moving to Albert Lea, Minn., during World War II, where he worked for a company that made Coleman lanterns for the Army.
In 1946, they assumed the responsibility of managing Weed's Jewelry Store due to the ill health of his father-in-law, Walter Weed. Mr. Weed taught him watchmaking skills and he then went to school to become licensed. He and his wife, Irma, managed the store until it was sold.
They then moved to Arizona, where he worked as a jewelry salesman, and settled in Tucson, Ariz., to help their daughter and son-in-law while they were in college. In 1962 they moved to Torrance, Calif., where he worked in sales and for North American, an aerospace company. They lived there until they returned to Lake Mills in 1978.
After returning to Lake Mills he had several jobs, the last one working for Jerry Brunsvold at the cement plant. He worked there until he was in his early 80s.
In December of 1995 his wife, Irma (Weed) Ingebritson, passed away, and shortly thereafter, he moved to the Care Center in Lake Mills where he remained until his death.
He is survived by two brothers, Marion and Palmer, of Lake Mills; a sister, Margaret (Toodie) Sader, of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; his daughter, Kay and husband, Wayne Ganzel of Sun City West, Ariz.; one granddaughter, Kimberly and her husband, Roger Dwinell; and three great-grandchildren, Chelsea, Michael and Eric of Amherst, N.H.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, John and Christie Ingebritson, three brothers and four sisters, Lloyd of Mexico, Mich., Julius of Adel, Ray of Albert Lea; Minn. Bertha Ingebritson, of Winnebago County, Nora Norstrud, of Forest City, Lillie Johnson, of Leland, and Pearl Austin,of Van Nuys, Calif.
Al was a well known businessman in Lake Mills and the surrounding areas, and will be missed by his family and friends.

NORA SPRINGS - W. Keith (Ole) Stiles, 88, of 111 N. Sullivan Ave. in Nora Springs, died Sunday (Jan. 6, 2002) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Shell Rock Valley United Methodist Church in Nora Springs, with the Rev. Richard Pippert and the Rev. Terra Amundson officiating.
Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at Sunnyside Memory Gardens in Charles City, with military honors by H.D.S. American Legion Post #449 of Nora Springs.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel in Nora Springs, and then one hour before the service on Thursday at the church.

Ole was born Sept. 10, 1913, on the family farm rural Rudd, the son of William S. and Ruth Anna (Wagner) Stiles. He graduated from Rudd High School in 1931. Following high school he worked for farmers in the area until going to work for the Rudd Co-op.
Ole married Earla Mae Fletcher on Mar. 15, 1942, in Rockford, On August of 1942 he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and served in the 308th and 374th Bomb Group stationed in China and India during World War II.
Following the service he came back to Rudd and continued to work for the co-op and later as assistant manager until his retirement in 1978, working for a total of 37 years.
Ole married Marjorie Kuhlmeier on Aug. 18, 1984, at the Methodist Church in Nora Springs. They enjoyed spending their winters in Dade City, Fla.
He enjoyed woodworking, playing golf, bowling, gardening, helping his children do repairs on their homes and most of all, being with his family.
He was a member of Shell Rock Valley United Methodist Church, Nora Springs, and H.D.S. American Legion Post #449, Nora Springs.
Ole is survived by his wife, Marjorie Stiles, of Nora Springs; two daughters, Carol Albaugh, of Stratford, Conn., and Linda Buchanan and her husband, Duane, of Rudd; three stepdaughters, Colleen Shanks and her husband, Michael, of Nora Springs, Diane Conley and her husband, John, of Supply, N.C., and Connie Kelley and her husband, Jerry, of Nora Springs; four grandchildren, Keri Myers and her husband, Jeff, of Stratford, Conn., Barry Albaugh, of Bridgeport, Conn., Laurie Green and her husband, Robert, of Rudd, and Crystal Ehlers and her husband, Ed, of Floyd.; two great-grandchildren Jacob and Abby Green; seven step grandchildren and 10 stepgreat-grandchildren; two brothers, Kenneth (Red) Stiles and his wife, Grace, of Rudd, and Leland (Jiggs) Stiles and his wife, Beverly, of Graettinger; and two sisters, Betty Laudner, of Santee, Calif., and Dorothy Newton and her husband Doyle, of East Moline, Ill.

Wilfred Lee "Whip" Schmidt was born on June 15, 1927, near Titonka, to George L. and Marie (Loeschen) Schmidt. He attended country school near Woden and graduated from Woden High School.
He farmed with his father before entering the United States Army in May of 1951. On Feb. 8, 1953, Whip was married to Darlene Eimers at St. John's Lutheran Church in Burt. ''Whip ''was discharged in March of 1953 and worked for Don Budlong as a farmhand.
The couple then moved to the home place near Titonka and farmed. ''Whip'' and his son, Bob, also did custom corn shelling and hauling. ''Whip'' 's health began to fail two years ago, so retired from farming.
He enjoyed golfing, camping, fishing, playing cards, music and dancing. ''Whip'' enjoyed his toy tractor collection and his greatest love was spending time with his grandchildren.
''Whip'' became a resident of the Good Shepherd Home in Mason City in October of 2000 and died there on Monday (Jan. 7, 2002) at the age of 74.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene, of Titonka; one son, Bob and wife, Colleen Schmidt, of Woden; and one daughter, Chris Formanek and husband, Randy, of Garner; also surviving are four grandchildren, Jeffrey Schmidt, Scott Schmidt, Ashley Formanek and Chelsey Schmidt as well as one brother, Bernard Schmidt, of Woden; and one sister, Marjorie Follman and husband, LaVerl, of Titonka.

HAMPTON - Gordon "Gordy" James Woltjer, 37, of Hampton, died Friday (Jan. 4, 2002) at his home in Hampton.

Gordy was born Feb. 27, 1964, in Hampton, the son of Fred (Bud) and Helen (Christensen) Woltjer. He was a graduate of Hampton High School Class of 1983. While in school he participated in football and wrestling.
Gordy enjoyed the outdoors, being with his family and friends. He was a professional driver employed with Smith Motor Express Inc. of Fort Dodge.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Hampton.
Gordy was united in marriage on April 27, 1991, to Angela "Angie" Katherine DeVries at the United Methodist Church in Hampton. They had three children, Danyelle Katherine, 8, Miranda Jo, 5, and Blyane Gordon, 22 months.
In addition to the children, he is survived by his parents; six sisters, Helene (Chuck) Neuwohner, of Las Vegas, Nev., Jean (Jerry) Hovenga, Gwen (R.L.) Spurgeon, Cheryl (Steve) Bonjour, Esther (Gavin) Lang, and Audrey (Dale) Sharp, all of Hampton; four brothers, Dick, Vic, Wayne, all of Hampton, and Dean, of Urbandale; several nieces, nephews, and numerous friends also survive him.
Gordy was preceded in death by his wife, Angie; an infant sister, Susan; and maternal and paternal grandparents.

Angie was born on Aug. 25, 1969, in Hampton, the daughter of Dallas and Maryetta (Knoll) DeVries. She was a graduate of Hampton High School and attended North Iowa Area Community College.
Angie had done home day care for seven years. Caring for these children was a very important and happy time in her life.
She collected angels and snowmen. The snowman collection started the last few years as gifts from her day care families.
Danyelle, Miranda and Blyane her beautiful children were the most important things in her life.
Angie was a member of the FADACA an organization of Registered Day Care Providers.
Angie was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hampton and a Sunday school teacher.
Angie was united in marriage on April 27, 1991, to Gordon "Gordy" James Woltjer at the United Methodist Church in Hampton.
They had three children, Danyelle Katherine, 8, Miranda Jo, 5, and Blyane Gordon, 22 months.
In addition to her children, she is survived by her parents, Maryetta Hansen, of Hampton, Dallas and Bev DeVries, of Hampton; brother, Chad and his wife, Dawn, and family, of Waukee; stepsister, Sherry McKinstrey and family, of Pella; stepbrother, Keith Halfwassen, of Sheffield; maternal grandmother, Edna Knoll, of Hampton; paternal grandparents, Raymond and Muriel DeVries, of Ackley; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Fred was born March 18, 1951, in Charles City, the son of Levi "Pat" and Jean (Broege) Varner.
He was united in marriage to Debbie Prince on Nov. 23, 1974, in Saugus, Calif. They moved to Kensett to raise their family, where they owned and operated the Lion's Den Bar.
Fred loved to spend time with his friends and family at the cabin in Waterville. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and playing pool. Fred especially loved spending time with his grandkids.
Fred is survived by his wife, Debbie, of Northwood; his daughter, Jami, of Mason City; three sons, Fred and his wife, Sue, of Kensett and Danny and Matt of Northwood; three grandchildren, Devin, Trevor, and Gavin; his mother, Jean Varner of Manly; one brother, Lee Varner, of Kensett; one sister, Debbie Orth and her husband, Paul, of Kensett; and three nieces and five nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, who also died of a heart attack at age 50.

NORTHWOOD - Julia Harriet Stumo, 92, of Northwood, died Saturday (Jan. 5, 2002) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, 4108 Killdeer Ave., rural Kensett, with the Rev. Selmer G. (Sam) Hernes officiating. Burial will be in the Elk Creek Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Julia Harriet Stumo was born on Feb. 3, 1909, in Montpelier, N.D., the daughter of Bendick and Hilda (Erickson) Holstad. She was baptized in the Montpelier, N.D., Lutheran Church, and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation at the North Shell Rock Lutheran Church, rural Northwood.
She attended and received her education in the rural schools in North Dakota and Iowa including the Somber Lutheran School in Worth County, graduating from Northwood High School in 1928. After completing her schooling she worked as a childcare provider in Worth County, and also worked at the Quality Café in Northwood.
She was united in marriage to Gerhard Joseph Stumo on March 27, 1932,, at the North Shell Rock Lutheran Church, rural Northwood, by the Rev. J.W. Ylvisoker. After their marriage together they farmed in the Hayward, Minn., area east of Albert Lea, before moving to the Worth County area, where they continued to farm until their retirement in 1969.
They moved to the Viking Manor in Northwood in 1994. Julia moved to the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood in 2000.
She enjoyed making afghans, sewing, ladies aid and circles, the church choir, and music, but her great love and enjoyment was her family and grandchildren.
She was a member of the Elk Creek Lutheran Church and the church circles, rural Kensett.

MICHAEL STEVEN NICHOLS
BLAIR, Neb. - Michael Steven Nichols, the son of Peggy (Pals) and Clifton Endriss, was born Dec. 17, 1958, in Mason City. He passed away suddenly on Tuesday (Jan. 1, 2002) at the Memorial Community Hospital in Blair, Neb., at the age of 43 years.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, Jan. 3, at the United Methodist Church in Tekamah, Neb. His final resting place is in Wayside Cemetery in Chapin, Iowa.
Michael graduated from Sheffield-Chapin Community High School in Sheffield in 1977.
He enlisted in the National Guard in 1980 and did his training in Fort Benning, Ga. He was honorably discharged in 1986.
On July 18, 1988, Michael and Patricia Lauffer were united in marriage at Chapin, Iowa. To this union three children were born, Joel, Jordan, and Jeanna. He has three children from a previous marriage, Josh, Jeremy and Jessica.
Mike worked construction and recently was employed by Tekamah-Herman schools.
He enjoyed bowling and golfing. He was active in the baseball league and assisted in coaching basketball and soccer.
Survivors include his wife, Patti; children, Joshua, Jeremy, and Jessica, of Blair, Neb.; Joel, Jordan, and Jeanna, of Tekamah; sister, Candy Nichols; niece, Joy Nichols; and stepfather, Clifton Endriss, all of Sheffield; two grandsons, Kordell and Quincy; and many relatives and friends.

MESA, Ariz. - Hattie B. (Jass) Baumgart, 89, of Mesa, Ariz., died Saturday (Jan. 5, 2002) at the Mesa Lutheran Hospital.

Mrs. Baumgart was born May 8, 1912, on a farm northeast of Garner, daughter of Albert and Helena (Bohn) Jass. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Garner.
On Sept. 20, 1963, she married Fred Baumgart at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Garner. They made their home in Garner and had a home in Walker, Minn. moving to Mesa, Ariz., in 1976.
During World War II she worked in a defense plant in Chicago. She was employed at Hancock County Auditor's Office from 1948 to 1968. She and her husband traveled selling for Michael Todd Inc. in Iowa and Minnesota.
She is survived by a son, Gary and wife, Linda Baumgart; grandchildren, Elissa, Eric and Kristen Baumgart, all of Dallas, Texas; one great-granddaughter, Madilyn; one niece, Violette (Eisberg) Thompson-Rickerl, of Charles City; godchild, Jeanne Carls, of Coon Rapids, Minn.; great-niece, Ellen Olson; and great-nephew, Bill Pearson and special friend, Howard Reko.

LARRY L. SAATHOFF
ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. - Larry L. Saathoff, 61, died Thursday (Jan. 3, 2002) at his home.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 12, in Michigan.
Larry L. Saathoff was born on April 16, 1940, in Mason City to Garrett and Selma (Lang) Saathoff. He attended school aat Lime Creek #7 and graduated from Mason City High School in 1958. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1962 with a degree in engineering and began employment with General Motors in Detroit, Mich. He retired in May of 2000 after 38 years with General Motors.
He was united in marriage to Judith Holmlund on Feb. 4, 1961.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Saathoff, of Rochester Hills, Mich.; two daughters, Krista and her husband, Fred Stephans, of Shaker Heights, Ohio, and Karin and her husband, Darren Gowens, of Waterford, Mich.; a son, Craig Saathoff, of Vail, Colo.; five grandchildren; a sister, Arlene Saathoff, of Austin, Minn.; two brothers, Jerry Saathoff and Harold Saathoff, both of Mason City; and nieces and nephews and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

JACK MEYER
EL PASO, Texas - Jack Meyer, 66, of El Paso, Texas, formerly of Buffalo Center, died Saturday (Jan. 5, 2002) at DelSol Medical Center in El Paso.
His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Congregational Church in Buffalo Center, with the Rev. Walter Mueller of Vista Del Sol Baptist Church in El Paso, Texas officiating. Interment will be in Olena Mound Cemtery in Buffalo Center.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Winter Funeral Home, 414 First St. N.W. in Buffalo Center.
Jack Bernard Meyer, son of Bert and Hannah (Hartman) Meyer, was born Aug. 29, 1935, at Buffalo Center. He was a graduate of Buffalo Center High School with the class of 1953. Jack was a baptized member of First Baptist Church in Buffalo Center.
He was united in marriage to Shirley Tjarks on April 6, 1963, at Ramsey Reformed Church, rural Titonka. Together they raised their family on the home farm northwest of town. Jack loved to farm.
Jack was a member of First Congregational Church serving as trustee and Sunday School teacher. He was also active serving as a Boy Scout and Webelos leader, Rake Flying Club member, on the Timely Mission Nursing Home board, Iowa Pork Producers, Co-op Oil Board and Aircraft Owners Pilot Association. He also drove feed truck for Bennett Bruhns.
Jack moved to Cheyenne, Wyo., in the fall of 1987 and trained as an aircraft mechanic at Cheyenne Aerotec and graduated in 1988. He then moved to Everett, Wash. to work at Tramco. Then in 1988, they moved to El Paso, Texas, and he was a licensed insurance agent and a tax preparer.
He was a member of Vista Del Sol Baptist Church in El Paso and was rebaptized there.
Besides farming, he dearly loved his family and his granddaughters. He enjoyed flying, camping, fishing and bicycling. Jack rode in RAGRAI seven times across Iowa.
Jack passed away on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at Del Sol Medical Center in El Paso at the age of 66.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Shirley, of El Paso, Texas; two sons, Brian and his wife, Kelli, of Richland, Mich., and Dale, of Elizabethtown, N.C.; his daughter, Shelly and her husband, Darryl West of Arlington, Texas; four granddaughters, Brittni and Brooke West and Lauren and Nicole Meyer; one sister, Arlys and her husband, Lee Meyer, of Sherburn, Minn.; two brothers-in-law, Roger Tjarks and his wife, Linda, of Titonka, and LaVerne Brue, of Buffalo Center; and nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends.

ESTHER V. ABBOTT
ST. ANSGAR - Esther V. Abbott, 96, of St. Ansgar, died Sunday (Jan. 6, 2002) at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, with the Rev. Robert Porisch officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. on Friday in the Paynesville Cemetery in Paynesville, Minn.
Visitation will be held one hour before the service on Thursday at the church.
Esther Vivian Hendrickson Abbott was born on the family farm west of St. Ansgar on July 20, 1905. She was the daughter of Henry O. and Elizabeth (Satre) Hendrickson. She was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church by the Rev. Waldeland. She attended the St. Ansgar schools and graduated in June 1923. She graduated from St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn., with a bachelor of arts degree in June 1927. She continued her education by attending summer sessions at the University of Minnesota and taught several years in Minnesota schools.
On July 20, 1944, she married Mark M. Abbott of International Falls, Minn. The Rev. O. Langhough performed the ceremony at First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar. She continued to live in International Falls, where she was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. She was active in both church and civic affairs. After her husband's death in 1972, she moved to St. Ansgar to make her home with her brother Otto.
She was preceded in death by her husband Mark; her parents; and brothers, Otto, Morris and Roy.
Esther is survived by nieces, Jean (Mrs. Sam Edgar) of St. Louis, Mo., Mary (Mrs. Tom Cederlund) of Grantham, N.H.; nephews, Don Hendrickson and wife, Leanna of St. Ansgar, David Hendrickson and wife, Mary Jo of Keokuk, and Bartlett Hendrickson and wife, Frances of Rockville, Md.; and several great nieces and nephews.

HAMPTON - Clarence L. Prause, 27, of Hampton, passed away on Sunday (Jan. 6, 2002) at his home in Hampton.

Clarence L. Prause was born June 19, 1974, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton. He made us get up in the middle of the night because he was in a hurry to come into this world. He has been going strong ever since.
Clarence went to Dumont Schools until the eighth grade and then attended Hampton-Dumont High School and graduated in 1993. Then he attended North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City.
Clarence enjoyed life. He wanted to do everything he could and he would work hard at whatever it was. He enjoyed playing sports the best. As soon as he was able, he was in Little League baseball. From then on he played football, basketball, track, bowling, golfing, and volleyball.
He enjoyed fishing with friends, barbecue get togethers, camping, dancing, rafting down rivers, and going to visit friends when they had breaks from school.
He enjoyed entertaining. He'd prepare food to eat after the fair parade in July for all of his friends who could come and stay with him.
He was given the chance to race in the Figure 8 and cruiser races this past year.
He was famous for his scrambled egg breakfasts in the early morning hours.
He loved his family and tried to see them often. He'd come out and help on the farm every fall. He'd be there for the family occasions and always helped his nieces and nephews celebrate birthdays. They enjoyed his teasing and rough housing with them. He was there if you really needed him.
Clarence is survived by his parents, Larry and Doris Prause, of Aredale; sister, Angie Kramer and daughters, Heather and Krystin and friend, Bryan Mehmen, of Hampton; sister, Carl and husband, Don O'Connor and sons, Cody, Dustin, and Nickolus, of Dumont; brother, Eddie Prause and friend, Nicki Broerman and daughter, Andrea, of Aredale; paternal grandparents, Ed and Leola Prause, of Hampton.

MASON CITY - Robert "Bob" A.F. Stauffacher, 89, of Mason City, died Monday (Jan. 7, 2002) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N. E. with the Rev. Steven Waughtal officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted by the Mason City Veteran's Memorial Association.

Bob was born June 4, 1912, in Camby, Minn., the son of Peter and Helen (Giese) Stauffacher. He served in the United States Army during World War II.
Bob lived most of his life in the Mason City area and worked for many years at Wolf's Junkyard. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing, hunting, and riding his snowmobile.
Bob is survived by one son, Dennis Stauffacher, of Mason City, and his two children, Ronald of Spring, Texas, and Robert D., of Mason City; and one daughter, Terry Kunzman and her husband, Dewayne, of Clear Lake, and their two children, Kathy Larson, her husband, Jack, and their children, Larz, Ben, Sara, and Dylan, all of Mason City; and Dave Kunz and his son, Logan, of Mason City. He is also survived by one sister, Helen Reese, of Portland, Ore.; and several nieces and nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Lena, two brothers, Ed and George, and three sisters, Elsie, Fannie, and Lillian.

MASON CITY - Lester H. Dawson, 84, of 1508 N. Rhode Island Ave., died Tuesday (Jan. 8, 2002) at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 713 N. Adams Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Lester was born July 19, 1917, in Clarion, to Mark and Susan (Donaldson) Dawson. Lester's father died during the 1918 flu epidemic. His mother married Herb Wright in 1920, who raised Lester as a son.
Lester attended Mason City schools and graduated from Mason City High School in 1935. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Lester was united in marriage to Rose M. Thomas on Oct. 12, 1940, at the Holy Family rectory in Mason City. They raised their four children and made their home in Mason City.
He owned and operated Dawson Home Improvement in Mason City from 1946 until his retirement in 1980. His master craftsmanship and attention to detail beautified many homes in the area.
After his retirement, he enjoyed traveling to the western United States with Rose to visit family and other favorite locations. Throughout his life he loved gathering with family and friends to visit, eat and play cards.
His memberships include Holy Family Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and VFW, all in Mason City.
Survivors include his wife, Rose Dawson of Mason City; two sons, Mark and his wife, Maureen, of Mason City, and Bill and his wife, Monica, of San Diego, Calif.; two daughters, Sharon and her husband, Darryl Stevens, of Tucson, Ariz., and Judy and her husband, Gene Rayburn, of St. Paul, Minn.; five grandchildren, Tani, Jeff, Todd, Brad and Matthew; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Donald Wright, of Osage; and many nieces and nephews.
Lester was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Genevieve Rounds.

Arlie Peter Christensen was born Dec. 29, 1906, in Shelby County, near Harlan, to Peter and Mary (Madsen) Christensen. He studied civil engineering at Iowa State University where he was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity.
On July 11, 1936, he married Elinore Smetana of Plattsmouth, Neb. Together, they raised four children.
Arlie worked for the Iowa State Highway Commission for 43 years. He came to Mason City in 1941. He was first employed in the capacity of district materials engineer, then as district secondary roads engineer and finally as district maintenance engineer. He was a member of the Iowa Engineering Society. He retired in 1971.
Arlie served on the church council at Immanuel Lutheran Church and St. Paul Lutheran Church. He was the institutional representative for Boy Scouts of America at Harding School for several years.
After retirement, Arlie served on the board of directors at the Senior Activity Center. He was also a director of the local AARP chapter.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, carpentry, cars and especially playing pinochle with good friends.
Arlie is survived by his beloved wife, Elinore; three sons, Ronald of Lincoln, Mass., Dennis of Cedar Rapids and Larry of Victor, Idaho; one daughter, Mary Lou, of Medford, Mass.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Ann Fabian.

MASON CITY - Laurence J. "Larry" Knoll, 87, of 615 S. Kentucky Ave., died Tuesday (Jan. 8, 2002) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Larry was born Sept. 1, 1914, in Adams, Minn., the son of Fred and Kathryn (Brady) Knoll. He grew up in Dougherty, graduating from Dougherty High School. He lived in Creston and later in California before returning to Charles City.
Larry was united in marriage to Arlene Cavanaugh in 1939 in St. Paul, Minn. They lived in Charles City, where Larry farmed and owned his own business, from 1946 until 1956.
In 1956, they moved to Algona, where he owned and operated Larry's Recreation Center, affectionately called "the business." In 1970, they moved to Mason City where Larry owned the Hamms distributorship.
After Arlene passed away in 1980, Larry was united in marriage to Ruth Ann Maish, on Aug. 6, 1982, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City.
He was a devoted member of the church and a 50-year member of the Knights of Columbus.
Larry was an avid fisherman who took many trips to Red Wing, Minn., to fish on the Mississippi, yearly trips to Lake Winnie, Minn., and frequent trips to the Northwest for salmon fishing.
He was an excellent cook and gardener who also enjoyed playing cards. Laurence will be remembered as a family man, fun-loving prankster and a loyal friend.
Larry is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann, of Mason City; two daughters, Mary Kathryn McMahon and her husband, Robert, of Winona, Minn., and Judy Archung and her husband, Ralph, of Port Ludlow, Wash.; one stepdaughter, Mindy Lee Prohaski and her husband, Vern, of Nora Springs; five grandchildren, Julie Heise and her husband, Bill, Pam Cunningham and her husband, Mike, Sally Ptacek and her husband, Mike, John Archung and Liz Archung; one stepgrandson, James McDonnell; three great-grandchildren, Jordan and Jack Cunningham and Mitchell McMahon Heise; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Arlene, in October of 1980; two brothers and three sisters.
