BRADENTON, Fla. - E.Gerold "Jerry" Beman, 75, formerly of Mason City, died Monday (Jan. 21, 2002) at the Blake Medical Center in Bradenton, Fla.

Memorial services were held at Congregational United Church of Christ in Bradenton.

CHARLES CITY - Jean (Mrs. Glen) Bauer, 87, of 2593 Seven Mile Road, died Thursday (Jan. 24, 2002) at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at First Christian Church in Charles City, with the Rev. Greg Lugn officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St. in Charles City, and one hour before services on Monday at the church.

BEVERLY ANN ROGERS

OSAGE - Beverly Ann Rogers, 59, passed away on Thursday (Jan. 24, 2002) at her home in Osage, after battling breast cancer for nine years.

Beverly was born in Spencer on Sept. 4, 1942, the daughter of Joseph Lepper and Dorothy (Petz-Lechman). She graduated from Mason City High School. She was employed at Mercy Hospital for 14 years.

Beverly was united in marriage to Marvin Rogers on May 12, 1962, in Mason City.

She enjoyed her grandchildren, as well as gardening, flowers and birds.

She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Ladies Guild.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage, with Father Philip Recker officiating. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Osage.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, with a 7 p.m. scripture service.

She is survived by her mother, Dorothy Lechman, of Mason City; husband, Marvin Rogers, of Osage; five children, Laurinda Darling and her husband, Bob, of Ankeny, Curt Rogers, of Osage and his special friend, Dee Bahl, Sandra Wohkittel and her husband, James, of Lakeville, Minn., Kevin Rogers and his wife, Cindy, of Osage, and Joanne Kuntz and her husband, Dennis, of Clear Lake; nine grandchildren, Elissa and Jerad Darling, Brittany, Kaitlin and Jorden Kuntz, James J. and Maxwell Wohkittel, and Kala and Lucas Rogers; one sister, Sue Martin and her husband, Gary, of Clarion; one brother, Mickey Lepper, of Mason City; and many special friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Lepper; and her stepfather, John Lechman.

LARRY R. WOLF

BELMOND - Larry R. Wolf, 70, of Belmond, died Thursday ( Jan. 24, 2002) at his home in Belmond following a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services in celebration of Larry's life are scheduled for 3 p.m. on Monday at the Tenold-Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First St. S.E. in Belmond. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. on Monday until the time of the services.

Larry was born Dec. 4, 1931, in Battle Creek, Mich., the son of Russell and Nita (Neubaum) Wolf. He attended Battle Creek schools and graduated from Central High School there.

Larry was an avid athlete during his school years and throughout most of his life. In school he had excelled in football, swimming, baseball and diving. In later years Larry also participated in the sport of soccer. He enjoyed bowling and had been a life-long golf enthusiast.

Following high school, Larry served for a period of time in the United States Air Force during the Korean War era. He was honorably discharged as a Private First Class in June 1952.

Mr. Wolf was united in marriage to Annette Mauk on Jan. 5, 1963, at Battle Creek. Following their marriage the couple made their home in Battle Creek, where Mr. Wolf continued his career spanning 50 years with the Eaton Corporation. He had worked for the company in various positions, beginning as a press operator and later worked as an engineer.

The couple moved to Belmond in 1983 when he was transferred to the Eaton facility there. He retired in December 1987 and continued to work for Eaton as a consultant. For a number of years Larry had coached various Eaton adult softball teams.

Larry enjoyed life with his family. They had been on many trips throughout the years together. One of his favorite pastimes was traveling to Laughlin, N.V., on gambling excursions.

Larry loved being a mentor, a good father, husband and grandfather. He was known for his quick wit and his willingness to lend a hand and will be missed by all.

Larry enjoyed his fellow workers tremendously and was always helping them with projects. He was always assisting his friends with their investments.

Mr. Wolf was a lifelong football fanatic and rarely missed watching a game. He loved to play golf and was a member of the Belmond Country Club for many years. He enjoyed collecting golf balls, antique golf clubs, and antique medicine bottles. Larry was a member of the Quarter Century Club at Eaton Corp.

Those left to cherish the memory of his life include his wife, Annette, of Belmond; three sons, Rick Wolf and his companion, Bev, of Westminster, S.C., Kirk Wolf, of Cedar Falls, and Martin Wolf and his companion, Amy, of Battle Creek, Mich.; four grandchildren, Shana Wolf, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Stevi, Ryan, and Breanna Wolf, all of Battle Creek, Mich.; also many special nieces and nephews in Michigan.

He was preceded in death by his father, Russell; mother, Nita Neubaum; stepmother, Wanda Wolf; and also a sister, Mary Lou Labrecque.

The family also plans a future service in Battle Creek.

SCOTT CLIFFORD KRABBE

LATIMER - Scott Clifford Krabbe, 39, of Latimer, died Thursday (Jan. 24, 2002) at Franklin General Hospital.

Scott was born on Nov. 23, 1962, in Hampton. Scott was the son of Dean and Karen (Bobst) Krabbe. Scott was baptized and confirmed at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Coulter.

Scott, being the son of a farmer, got bitten by the Farmer Bug at an early age. Scott helped his father and Bob Borcherding with field work. For a couple of years, when Scott got his driver's license, he worked for Dudley's Corner for a short time. He later worked for Century Machine in Coulter for a short time.

On Sept. 25, 1982, Scott married Pam Borcherding. Scott's pride and joy were his sons, Joshua Scott Krabbe, Derrick Alan Krabbe, and Tyler James Krabbe. Scott and Pam divorced in 1998.

Scott worked for Lawrence Hamilton, Dave Kenniger, Ed Hopkey and North Central FS in Coulter. Then Scott's dream to farm came true. Scott and his father-in-law, Wayne Borcherding, farmed together until 1995, when a stroke caused Scott to quit farming.

Scott enjoyed his sons, Josh, Derrick and Tyler. Scott enjoyed watching neighbors plant and harvest their crops. Scott also enjoyed fishing, hunting and looking for deer.

Scott is survived by his sons, Joshua, Derrick and Tyler Krabbe, all of Latimer; his father, Dean Krabbe, of Dows; his mother and stepfather, Karen and Richard Hotchkiss, of North Carolina; his brother, Larry Krabbe, of Dows; his sisters, Kim Crafton, of Rowan and Pam Davis and husband, Johnny, of Rock Hill S.C.; his grandfather, James Krabbe, of Latimer; his grandmother, Verla Lundell, of Clarion; one nephew, Matthew Crafton, of Rowan; and one niece, Felisha Davis, of Rock Hills, S.C.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Coulter, with Pastor Mary Peterson officiating. Interment will be in St. Paul's Cemetery in Latimer.

BRITT - Mona L. Landsberg, 86, of Britt died Friday (Jan. 25, 2002) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Her funeral will be held 10:30 a.m. on Monday at the United Methodist Church in Britt, with the Revs. Robert Dodge and Larry Vallery officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Cataldo Funeral Home, Britt, and will continue one hour before services at the church on Monday.

SCOTT A. GUSCETTE

BELLE PLAINE, Minn. -Scott A. Guscette, 31, of Belle Plaine, Minn., died Friday (Jan. 25, 2002) at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Fairfax, Minn., with interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. Roger Woller and the Rev. LaVern Holz will be officiating.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Kolden Funeral Home, 219 N. Willow St., Belle Plaine, Minn., and will continue from 10:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the church Tuesday.

Scott was born on Sept. 21, 1970, in Jamestown, N.D., to Raymond and Judy (Clementson) Guscette. He was a 1989 graduate of Mandan, N.D., High School, a 1993 graduate of Willmar Community College, and a 1995 graduate of Mankato State University.

Scott married Michelle Firle on Jan. 4, 1992, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Fairfax with the Rev. Roger Woller officiating.

He was employed in law enforcement by the City of Mankato, worked as a deputy for Pine and Chisago counties and was later employed by Minnesota State Patrol district of Scott and Carver counties as a State Patrolman.

Scott was an outdoorsman, liked fishing, camping golf, hockey and taking walks.

He is survived by his wife, Michelle, of Belle Plaine, Minn.; daughter, Desirae; son, Derek; parents, Raymond and Judy, of Clear Lake, Iowa; sisters, Michele (LaRoy) McFerran and Kylie (Clint) Calease, both of Clear Lake; four nieces and nephews, Samantha Guscette, Hunter McFerran and Madelyn and Tateon Calease; a grandmother, Evelyn Rebhahn of Beulah, N.D.; father and mother-in-law, Kenneth and Renae Firle of Fairfax, Minn.; brother-in-law, Shawn (Karen) Firle; and grandparents-in-law, Ruth Black and Corwin and June Firle.

Scott was preceded in death by his grandparents, Duane Guscette and Arnold and Madelyn Clementson.

RUTH M. RYBURN

MASON CITY - Ruth M. Ryburn, 83, of 1037 19th St. S.W., died Monday ( January 21, 2002) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Private family funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 25, at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf-Grarup Funeral Home, Sheffield, with Pastor Louie Bram of First Baptist Church of Rockwell officiating. Burial was in the Rockwell Cemetery.

Ruth Mary Ryburn was born June 28, 1918, on the family farm at Rockwell, a daughter of James Monroe and Emma (Hinrichs) Ryburn. She attended country school and graduated from Rockwell High School. She then attended Iowa State Teachers College and taught school at Hurley, Iowa.

Ruth moved to Tacoma, Wash., where she served with the Temple Baptist Church.

When The General Association of Regular Baptist Churches established its office in Chicago in 1944, Ruth was the first head secretary, a position she held for 38 years. Each of the Representatives to the GARBC described Ruth "as a capable, conscientious, dedicated worker. She loved the Lord and labored as unto Him. She was loyal to the Association out of strong Biblical convictions."

Ruth lived in the IOOF in Mason City for many years.

Ruth loved her family, especially her nieces and nephews. She traveled to many countries with a trip to the Holy Land being her most memorable.

Ruth is survived by her brother, Jim (Shirley) Ryburn, Britt; a sister, Marjorie (Mick) Sturges, Clear Lake; sister-in-law, Reva Ryburn, Rockwell; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, William.

Jean Elisabeth (Davenport) Bauer was born Dec. 28, 1914, at Memphis, Tenn., the daughter of Edgar and Mary "Mae" (Schwab) Davenport. She attended schools in Kansas City, Mo., and in Indiana, graduating from Central High School in South Bend, Ind., on June 11, 1931. Jean also enrolled at Iowa State Teacher's College (UNI) in 1934, completing a one-year Rural Course Certificate program in 1935, and then taught for five years at the Schwab School near Oxford Junction, Iowa. While teaching she enrolled in summer school and correspondence classes to obtain her Special Rural School Teacher's Certificate and a Standard Elementary Teacher's Certificate in 1940.

In 1940, Jean came to Floyd County to teach at the Cedar Township School No. 2 (Ballard). She taught at a one-room schoolhouse called St. Charles No. 2 on old Highway 14.

During World War II, she worked at Oliver Farm Equipment Company as the only female in the lathe department from 1943-1946. She also did seamstress and alteration work in the local area after the war.

On Nov. 18, 1949, she was united in marriage to Glen Bauer at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They farmed on the family farm west of Charles City now known as Plum Creek Farm.

Jean was a member of the First Christian Church and had taught Sunday school for many years. She was active in the Charles City Woman's Club, YMCA, West St. Charles Homemaker's Club, Heritage Club, Farm Bureau, Quilting Group, Genealogy Club, and the Hoe and Hope Garden Club where she won many awards for her creative floral arrangements. Jean had many hobbies and interests including traveling, reading and spending time with her family.

Living family members include four sons, Lawrence of Charles City, Carl and his wife, Donna, of Rochester, Minn., Lee of Mukilteo, Wash., and Bruce and his wife, Sue, of Ankeny, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Paula, Scott, Carrie, Matthew and Nicole of Rochester, and Amy and Daniel of Ankeny; and a sister, Joan Britten of Davenport.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2000; an infant daughter, Katherine; and two brothers, Aylmer and George Davenport.

The family suggests memorials be directed to the First Christian Church or Hospice of North Iowa, Charles City site.

FOREST CITY - Maynard Eames, 92, died Sunday (Jan. 27, 2002) at his home in Forest City.

TITONKA - Erwin H. Eden, 90, died Saturday (Jan. 26, 2002) at Titonka Care Center.

GERALD HEBEL

MANLY - Gerald Hebel, 81, fondly known as Jack, passed away on Saturday (Jan. 26, 2002) due to an internal infection. As he made the transition, he was welcomed into heaven by Katie, his wife of almost 60 years, who preceded him in death on Jan.9, 2002.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly with the Rev. David Kucera officiating. Interment will follow at the Sacred Heart Catholic ChurchCemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 Spring Street, Manly. A scripture service will begin at 6:30 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the Jack Hebel Memorial Fund.

Gerald Hebel was born Nov. 22, 1920, in Manly. He was the son of Chris and Blanche (Yezek) Hebel.

He was married to Katie (Basgall) on Nov. 18, 1942, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly.

Jack lived the majority of his life in Manly with Katie. Together they enjoyed watching John Wayne movies, "The Price is Right" and "Wheel of Fortune."

Jack served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was part of the crew of the USS Lexington.

He received an honorable discharge on October 16, 1945,with a rank of Aviation Machinist's Mate Second Class USNR.

When he returned to Manly he worked for the Rock Island Rail Road until he retired.

Jack loved working and riding horses. He was also an avid golfer and an original member of Pioneer Town and Country Club. He enjoyed going uptown and socializing with friends.

After retirement he enjoyed working on the farm and keeping busy. Jack will be remembered, by his friends and family as dependable when they needed him.

Jack's surviving family includes three daughters, six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one expectant great-grandchild, one brother and five sisters.

He is survived by his daughter, Juanita and Jim Cooper of Manly; granddaughter, Kim and Glen Venz, of Houston, Texas; great-grandchildren, Nathan, Natasha and Nicole; grandson, JustinCooper, a student in Ames; daughter, Loretta and Tom Patten, of Las Vegas, Nev.; granddaughter, Kelley and Bill Smith of Detroit, Mich., with baby Smith on the way; and granddaughter, Shawnda Westly, of Sacramento, Calif.; daughter, Kathleen (Kathi) and Joel Jensen of Cedar Rapids, and grandsons, Joshua and Jacob; brother, Christy Hebel of Yelm, Wash.; and sisters, Dixie Nelson of Mason City, Clarice Nelson of Waterloo, Blanch (and Eldon) Saland of Waterloo, Dorothy (and Tom) of Crosslake, Minn., and Donna Weiland, Coggon. Jack will be missed by family and friends.

Katie and Jack's special cat, Angel, is now residing in Cedar Rapids and will continue to share their love with everyone.

LELAND - LaVaune Hill, age 74, formerly of Leland, residing in Coronado, Calif., died Monday (Jan. 21, 2002) at the Coronado Hospital in Coronado, Calif.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at West Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Leland with the Rev. Clarence Baalson officiating. Burial will be at West Prairie Lutheran Cemetery in rural Leland.

JOSEPH ELLIOTT SKRAM

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Joseph Elliott Skram, 90, died Saturday (Jan. 26, 2002) at his home in Columbia.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Monsignor Michael Flanagan and the Rev. Bill Debo officiating. Burial and a prayer service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Mount Olivett Cemetery in St. Joseph, Mo.

Visitation and prayer service will be held today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Parker Funeral Service and Crematory, 22 N. 10th St., Columbia, Mo., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Skram was born Feb. 12, 1911, in Maddock, N.D., to Jacob Soren Skram and Tilda Johnson.

In 1933 Joseph married Mary Elaine Knapp in Mason City and she preceded him in death on Dec. 11, 2001.

Shortly after graduation from high school, Joseph became assistant office manager for the Jacob Decker's Packing House in Mason City. He continued working in the meat packing industry in Fort Dodge and in Topeka, Kan. In 1953 he took a job with the federal government, Aid for International Development, liaison with Turkish and American government, and moved his family to Ankara, Turkey.

Returning to the United States in the fall of 1954, he became comptroller for Seitz Meat Packing in St. Joseph, Mo. In 1964 he was contracted to build and became CEO of Blue Ribbon Beef Packing Co. in Mason City and in Le Mars, Iowa. In 1970 he became chief financial officer for Sterling Beef Co. in Sterling, Colo., and in 1975 chairman of the board and president of American Beef Packers in Omaha, Neb. He is listed in the 40th Edition of "Who's Who in America." He retired in 1986 at age 75 and moved to Columbia, Mo., in 1992.

Mr. Skram was deeply involved as a member of the Catholic Church and served in various parishes as president of the parish councils. While in Iowa, Nebraska and Colorado, Mr. Skram was on the board of directors and instrumental in building homes for the mentally handicapped: Handicap (now Opportunity) Village in Clear Lake, Iowa, and Hart's Home in Sterling, Colo.

Mr. Skram is survived by eight children, Mary Elaine and Jim Waite, Dayton, Ohio, Eleanor Skram, New York, Suzanne and Lou Hart, Columbia, Mo., Nancy and Frank Tolliver, Charleston, W.Va., Paul Skram and Nancy Tyler, Charleston, W.Va., Peter and Beverly Skram, Denver, Colo., Patricia Skram and Paul Turner, Portland, Ore., and Chris and Alice Skram, Denver, Colo.

He is also survived by eight nieces and nephews whom he welcomed into his home and raised after their mother's death, Stephen Mahlstadt, John Mahlstadt, Bill Mahlstadt, Mark Mahlstadt, Mary Mahlstadt, Edward Mahlstadt, Ann Weiss and Ruth Harvey; two sisters, Enola McMannes of Mason City and Alva McGuire of Austin, Texas; 23 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joseph was preceded in death by his sons, Joseph John Skram and Richard A. Skram; his daughter, Lillian K. Skram; his parents; and one brother.

AGNETA SYSE

VENTURA - Agneta Syse, 85, of 113 Hill Crest, died Sunday (Jan. 27, 2002) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Daird Korth of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ventura, officiating. Interment will be in Danway Cemetery, Irwin, Iowa.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home and will continue from 9 a.m. until the time of the service Tuesday.

Agneta was born July 30, 1916, the daughter of Andrew and Sadie (Benson) Flug in Irwin. She attended school in Irwin.

Agneta married Bert Benson on Nov. 19, 1934, and they lived in the Harlan area. In 1954 they moved to Ventura. She married Arne Syse in 1960.

Agneta was especially fond of her children and grandchildren and enjoyed baking for them. She enjoyed watching Nascar Races, collecting spoons, Beanie Babies, Barbie dolls, refrigerator magnets, angels and jewelry.

She attended Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ventura.

Agneta is survived by her six children, Ardelle Pope, Harlan, Betty Page, Albert Lea, Minn., Rose Marie Gross and her husband, Russ, Aurora, Minn., Gary Benson and his wife, Sibyl, Dalton, Ga., Larry Benson, Clear Lake, and Carol Stienlicht, Garner; 12 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; one brother, Gaylord Flug and his wife, DeLois, Coquille, Ore.; and two sisters, Mandie Ellingson, Edina, Minn., and Lenora Conrad, Harlan.

MASON CITY - Esther Vosburgh, 83, died Monday (Jan. 28, 2002) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Ernest Thompson and the Rev. David Anderson officiating. Interment will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Rockwell Cemetery.

Esther L. Vosburgh was born June 17, 1918, in Mason City, the daughter of Karl and Phillipine (LaMont) Haake. She was a graduate of the Mason City High School class of 1936. Following high school she began her career at Park Hospital as a nurse's aide.

She was united in marriage to Ralph "Sandy" Vosburgh on September 4, 1943, in Mason City. They made their home in Rockwell where he farmed. Following his death in 1951, Esther was united in marriage to Roy Vosburgh on June 15, 1954, in Elgin, Ill.

She retired from Mercy Hospital after many years of service. During her retirement she worked as a clerk at Damon's Department Store and Spurgeon's in Mason City.

She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church. On the first Friday of every month, she could be found at Country Kitchen where the Class of 1936 met for breakfast. She looked forward to this time spent with friends.

She also enjoyed crocheting, sewing and doing needlework. Most importantly she enjoyed the time she spent with her family especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Lucile Tisor and husband ,Tom, of Mason City, and Donna Vosburgh of Mason City; a stepdaughter, Alice Jordi and husband, Al, of Huntly, Ill.; granddaughters, Dena Gossweiler and husband, Mike, of Rockwell, Sandra Piippo and husband, Devin, of Portland, and Amy Tisor of Mason City; great-grandchildren, Lindsay and Ryan Gossweiler of Rockwell and Destiny and Mariah Piippo of Portland; and several nieces and nephews.

EVERETT J. ANDERSON

BELMOND - Everett J. Anderson, 85, passed away Sunday (Jan. 27, 2002) at his home in Belmond.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church west of Belmond. The Rev. Lowell Halvorson will officiate. Burial will take place in St. Olaf Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick's Lane South in Belmond, and will continue one hour prior to the services at the church Wednesday. Belmond Troop No. 16, Boy Scouts of America, will provide an honor guard.

Everett, the son of Jess and Anna Cronan Anderson, was born January 11, 1917, near Livermore. He grew up in the Renwick area where he attended country schools. Everett graduated as valedictorian from Livermore High School in 1934. After high school he worked for a time with the Civilian Conservation Corps.

Everett was united in marriage to Juen A. Rasmussen on December 23, 1939, in Eagle Grove, Iowa. The couple first made their home in West Bend, Hardy and later moved to Harcourt, Iowa, where Everett managed the grain elevator.

In 1946 Everett and Juen moved to the Olaf area where he managed the Olaf Elevator. Later they moved into Belmond where Juen and Everett lived in the same home for the rest of their married lives.

Everett and Juen not only had a wonderful, loving marriage, but they also were the best of friends. Not only was their marriage made in heaven, but it also was lived on earth with God's continued blessings. Their marriage was truly special.

Everett was an avid sports fan, cheering for the Cubs, Twins and Vikings. Juen and Everett were avid campers and have camped in 49 of the 50 states.

Everett was very involved in Boy Scouts, and his efforts were recognized through many awards including the Silver Beaver. He and Juen also received the Lamb Award. He helped run the Boy Scouts concession stand.

Everett was a member of the St. Olaf Church where he served as Sunday school superintendent, church treasurer, usher and trustee. He served as a board director for the Belmond Community Apartments as a charter member. Everett was a lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge and he and Juen were members of the Eastern Star. He managed congregate meals for a number of years and drove the Care Car. In 2001 he was presented the Outstanding Citizen Award.

Everett is survived by one daughter, Dixie Miller of Belmond; three sons, Edward and his wife, Sharon, of Lubbock, Texas, Dennis and his wife, Linda, of South Kingstown, R.I., and Douglas and his wife, Laurie, of Nevada, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Evelyn Pint of Eagle Grove and Lois Sheets and her husband, Johnny, of Webster City; one brother, Merle Anderson of Clarion; and many nieces and nephews.

CLEAR LAKE - Jack L. Canady, 84, of Clear Lake, died Saturday (Jan. 26, 2002) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Jack was born August 14, 1917, in Boone, the son of Leonard and Margaret Ann (Lewis) Canady, and grew up in Ames. Jack attended Iowa State University in Ames.

Jack married Dee Baldwin May 31, 1941, at Eagleville, Mo. Jack was vice president of Titus Metals in Waterloo and manager of the Aluminum Extrusion Division of Winnebago Industries in Forest City. They owned and operated Dee's Hallmark Stores in Ft. Dodge.

Jack was an active member of Galilean Lutheran Church. He served as president of the Waterloo Chamber of Commerce and was on the City Council of Forest City. He was the president of the American Aluminum Extruders Council, a supporter of Industrial Education and the Boy Scouts of America, and was an active member of Kiwanis and Rotary.

He loved raising, riding and showing Arabian horses. He also loved golfing , traveling, being with his family and making new friends.

Jack is survived by his wife Dee Canady, Clear Lake; three daughters, Jackie Weinzetl and her husband, Jim, Plymouth, Minn., Sandy McHugh and her husband, Jim, Ft. Collins, Colo., and Sally Peyton and her husband, Bob, Elkhorn, Neb.; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was loved and cherished by all as a giving and loving man who was an example of a wonderful husband, father and friend.

FOREST CITY - Maynard Eames, 92, died Sunday (Jan. 27, 2002) at his home in Forest City.

Maynard L. Eames was born on a farm in Linden Township, Winnebago County, Iowa, on June 20, 1909, the son of Martin and Anna (Nelson) Eames. At age three his parents quit farming and moved to Forest City. He received his education in Forest City schools and graduated from Forest City High School in 1926.

In 1927, Maynard and his father formed a partnership, Eames Construction Company. They worked together building schools, businesses and homes in the Forest City area until Martin's retirement in 1963.

In the spring of 1923, God's true servants came to Forest City with the gospel. In the fall of 1925, Maynard accepted the gospel invitation. He has remained faithful to his convictions.

On July 22, 1936, Maynard was united in marriage to Emma Anna Jensen of Greene. To this union were born a son, Robert, and a daughter, Lois.

Maynard began working for Winnebago Industries as an engineer in the housing project in 1963. He retired from Winnebago in 1971 and since then he has spent his time enjoying his family and building grandfather clocks. He just completed his 57th clock in November of 2001.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, Robert and Sharon Eames of Forest City and Lois Turner and husband, Darrell, of Iola, Kan. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Carmen Schaben and husband, Thad, of Urbandale, Jenny Scott and husband, Abe, of Lexington, Ky., Wade Eames and friend April Sowder of Ames, Elaine Turner of Iola, Kan., and Darin Turner and wife, Jessica, of Tyler, Texas; a sister, Vivalore Gantt of Lyon, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

THE REV. DICK LEE WATKINS

IOWA CITY - The Rev. Dick Lee Watkins, 71, of 2017 Rochester Ave., Iowa City died Tuesday (Jan. 29, 2002) at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following lengthy illnesses.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa City with the Rev. Paul Akin and the Rev. Bob Dean officiating.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. on Friday at Gay & Ciha Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City.

Memorial fund has been established with the First United Methodist Church in Iowa City and Voices of Experience (Senior Citizens Chorus).

The Rev. Watkins was born on Sept. 4, 1930, in Cherokee, the son of Lew S. and Edith Marple Lee Watkins. He graduated from Storm Lake High School in Storm Lake in 1948, attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake and he received his Bachelor's of Arts Degree from Cornell University in Mount Vernon.

Dick received his master's degree in theology from the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary in 1961.

Dick married Marilyn Joy Wells on March 9, 1952. He served his country as a paratrooper in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

The Rev. Watkins served as pastor at Hopkinton, Fort Dodge, Belmond, West Liberty, Marion, Amish Circuit and retired from the First United Methodist Church in Iowa City.

Marilyn Joy Watkins died June 27, 1994.

Dick married Linda L. Peters on May 27, 1995, at First United Methodist Church in Iowa City.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Men, and Voices of Experience and also was a volunteer at Mercy Hospital. He was a volunteer fireman with the Belmond Fire and Rescue, and also, while living in West Liberty, he volunteered with the ambulance service.

He has taken care of many lives in the Lord's service and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Dick's family includes his wife, Linda Watkins, of Iowa City; daughters, Susan Dirks and her husband, Tim, of Marion, and Katherine Anderson and her husband, Roger, of Fairfield; son, Lewis Watkins, of Iowa City, stepsons, Terry Peters and his wife, Judy, of Tampa, Fla., Timothy Peters and his wife, Julie, of Seattle, Wash., Troy Peters, of Tipton; stepdaughter, Tammy Negrete and her husband, Robert, of Washington; four grandchildren, Benjamin Passmore, Heather Dirks, Spencer Dirks and Angela Watkins; and his eight stepgrandchildren, Eliece Peters, Jesse Peters, Carly Peters, Cody Negrete, Adam Negrete, Christian Peters, Casey Negrete and Anthony Peters; two brothers, John Watkins and his wife, Fern, of Minot, N. JERRY H. FOLKERS

OSAGE - Jerry H. Folkers, 63, of Osage, died Monday (Jan. 28, 2002) at his home.

Jerry was born on Oct. 16, 1938, in Allison, the son of Erwin and Lucille (Ellerman) Folkers. He attended school in Allison and graduated from Allison High School in 1956. He attended Wartburg College at Waverly, where he received his bachelor's degree and then attended law school at The University of Iowa in Iowa City and graduated in 1962.

He was united in marriage to Betty Bruns on Sept. 8, 1962, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Rockwell and to this marriage were born two children, Eric on June 17, 1964, and Anna on Sept. 28, 1967.

After graduating from the College of Law, Jerry entered the Marine Corps where he attained the rank of captain, and was honorably discharged in 1966.

They moved to Osage in 1966, where Jerry started to practice law. He served as Mitchell County attorney from 1968 to 1996. He was a member of the law firm, McKinley, Folkers, Walk, and Murphy in Osage.

He was treasurer of the Osage American Legion Post 278. For a time he also served as superintendent at Our Savior's Lutheran Church where he was a member.

He was an avid fisherman, cribbage player, chess player, and gardener.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott, officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery with military rites by the Osage American Legion Post 278.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with the family receiving friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Leota C. Ludwig, 98, died Wednesday (Jan. 23, 2002) after a brief illness. Born April 4, 1903, in Cedar Falls, she resided in Florida after moving from Clear Lake four years ago.

Leota was preceded in death by two husbands, Glenn Orth and Emory Ludwig.

Leota is survived by three children, Matt Orth and spouse, James Orth and spouse, and Mary Jac Bacon; grandchildren; great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and loving members of the Ludwig family.

Her service was held Jan. 26, 2002 in Jacksonville, Fla.

WANETA G. LENZ KESSLER

CHINO HILLS, Calif. - Waneta G. Lenz Kessler, 67, died Dec. 20, 2002 due to complications from chemotherapy following colon cancer surgery.

Born in Hopkinton, Iowa, on Oct. 14, 1934, she was a daughter of Ronald and Gladys Wagner Lenz, who preceded her in death. She grew up on farms at Floyd and Rudd, Iowa.

She was a 1952 graduate of Rudd High School and a 1956 graduate of Coe College in Cedar Rapids, majoring in religion.

She moved to California in 1957 to begin a 38-year teaching career for the Garden Grove Unified School District, teaching first and second grades.

As a youth she was active in the Girls' and Boys' 4-H clubs, many school activities, and the choir and youth groups of the First Methodist Church.

She and her husband, Robert, lived in Anaheim for many years. They owned and managed the Palm Motor Lodge. After moving to Chino Hills in 1988, she became an active member of the Loving Savior of the Hills Lutheran Church. She was a 10 year member of the Chino Hills Lions Club.

She donated untold hours at the annual pumpkin lot and Christmas tree lot, among other activities. She was honored as a Melvin Jones Fellow. She worked as a volunteer aide at her grandchildren's school, following her retirement in 1995.

She is survived by her husband, Robert D.; daughter, Kathy Brown; son-in-law, Bill Brown; son, Ronald R.; grandsons, Robert, Ryan, David, Redmond, Jessie, Ronald; and granddaughters, Ali, Kimberly, Kristin; brothers, Gayle Lenz, Riverside, Calif., John Lenz, Fort Worth, Texas; sister, Judy Settle, Irvine, Calif.; and many other family members and friends.

She will be greatly missed by all.

Funeral services have been held, with inurnment at Fairhaven Memorial Park Cemetery in Santa Ana, Calif.

ANAMOSA - Funeral services for Elizabeth Michels Barnes Higgins will be 2 p.m. on Friday at the Goettsch Funeral Home in Anamosa, with the Rev. Carl Manternach, officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Anamosa.

Friends may call two hours before services at Goettsch's in Anamosa.

Elizabeth Michels Barnes Higgins, 98, a resident of the Mechanicsville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center since Dec. 4, 1995, died Monday (Jan. 28, 2002) following complications from a stroke.

Elizabeth was born on June 30, 1903, in Amber, Iowa the daughter of William and Anna Otten Michels. She was a graduate of Anamosa High School in 1921 and taught Country School for two years before marriage to Carl E. Barnes on September 19, 1923. They lived in Anamosa where Carl was a rural mail carrier for many years. Carl died in July of 1945.

After Carl's death, Elizabeth moved to Oelwein where she married Bernard M. Higgins in June 1947. They then moved to Mason City where Bernard was a federal meat inspector at the Decker meat packing plant. He passed away in December 1989.

She moved back to Anamosa in September 1990 to the senior housing complex.

In Mason City she belonged to the Navy Mothers, American Legion Auxiliary, Women's Relief Corps and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

Survivors include two daughters, Carlyn Barnes (Arden) Achenbach, of Anamosa, and Mildred Barnes Behrens, of Mount Vernon; a daughter-in-law, Theona Barnes Barkley, of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; nine grandchildren, Gary (Jean) Achenbach, of Boone and their children, Brent, Sara and Brian; Carl (Mary) Achenbach, of Anamosa and their children, Christi and Daniel; Randy (Rhonda) Achenbach, of Garner and their children. Rochelle and Reed; Larry (Candy) Barnes of Waterloo and their children, Steven and Jason; Fred Barnes of Aurora, Colo.; David Barnes of Davenport and his son, Thomas; Beth (Richard) Smith, of Lisbon and their children, Ricky, David and Laurie; Ron (Linda) Behrens of Fort Collins, Colo.; Mark (Vanessa) Behrens, of Lisbon and their children, Camden, Blake and Marissa and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Carl E. Barnes, Bernard M. Higgins; her son, Merlin E. Barnes, in June 1986; her son-in-law, Delmar L. Behrens, in July 1978; her grandson, Steven L. Barnes, in January 1996; four sisters, Catherine Meade, Berniece Drumbarger, Ruth Osterkamp and Dorothy Tuel; and five brothers, Henry Michels, Carl Michels, Paul Michels, Julius Michels and Harry Michels in infancy.

ALMA V. HANSEN

FOREST CITY - Alma V. Hansen, 90, of Forest City, died Tuesday (Jan. 29, 2002) at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with the Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating. Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. on Monday at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in St. Paul, Minn.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St., Forest City.

Alma V. Hansen was born in Barnes County, N.D. on Nov. 24, 1911. She was baptized at Nebo Lutheran Church, attended Green Consolidated Schools and graduated from Valley City High School. She continued her education at Abbot Hospital in Minneapolis, Minn., where she received her registered nursing degree.

From April 1943 until June of 1945, Alma was a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army, serving in the South Pacific during World War II.

On July 5, 1947, she was married to Franklin Hansen in Omaha, Neb. The couple had lived in Forest City their entire married lives. Alma worked at Mercy Hospital in Mason City for 10 years before retiring in 1976.

She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and active in Leah Circle. She was past president of the American Legion Auxiliary and was involved in Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts.

She enjoyed traveling, gardening and entertaining friends in her home.

She is survived by her husband, Franklin, of Forest City; a son, Robert Hansen, of Portland, Ore.; a daughter, Ellen Stoneburner, and husband, Daniel, of Athens, Ga.; and three grandchildren, Tara, Erin and Emily.

Alma was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Carl, Berger, William, Henry and Elmer; and four sisters, Eda Jahren, Emma Faust, Agda Kuether and Louise Murphy.

CONRAD H. BARTLESON

FOREST CITY- Conrad H. Bartleson, 85, of Forest City, died Monday (Jan. 28, 2002) at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with the Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Forest City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N Clark St., Forest City.

Conrad H. Bartleson was born Aug. 4, 1916, in Forest City, the son of Gustov and Caroline (Olson) Bartleson. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church and graduated from Forest City High School in 1935.

On June 18, 1941, he was united in marriage to Carrie Amundson at the Lutheran parsonage in New Richland, Minn. They lived in Forest City their entire married lives and spent winters on South Padre Island, Texas, for 16 years.

Conrad worked as a bricklayer with his brothers and father as Bartleson & Sons, with Gjellefald and Associates, with the Forest City Improvement Company and later was in business with his son, Jim. He retired in 1980.

Carrie and Connie loved to travel and went all over the United States and to Mexico, Canada, Norway and Sweden. He was an avid fisherman and gardener. Family was always very important and for many years he and Carrie hosted the Bartleson family reunion.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Bricklayers Union and Ducks Unlimited.

Survivors include his wife, Carrie, of Forest City; his children and their spouses, Karen Gustafson and husband, Carroll, of Forest City, Jim Bartleson and wife, Judy, of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Elaine Kingland and husband, Joel, of Forest City. He also is survived by seven grandchildren, Kristen Rafferty and husband, Brian, of Darien, Ill., Eric Gustafson of Rochester, Minn., Kyle Bartleson and wife, Cindy, of Redondo Beach, Calif., Kim Bartleson of Oklahoma City, Okla., Wendy Kingland of Clive, Laurie Heidebrink and husband, Greg, of Charles City and Lindsay Kingland of Forest City. Great-grandchildren include Jason, Luke, Matthew and Grace Rafferty, Emma Heidebrink, Brendon Edwards and Nickolas Courrier. Also surviving are two sisters, Clara Verbeckmoes of Forest City and Olga Sevold of St. Paul, Minn.

Conrad was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Tony, George, Harold and Paul; and three sisters, Ida Brones, Helga Taylor and Ethel Ellickson.

DONALD B. 'D.B.' MEYER

LELAND, N.C. - Donald B. "D.B." Meyer, 66, of Highland Hills Drive, Leland, N.C., died last Wednesday (Jan. 15, 2002) at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Born in Mason City, Iowa, on Dec. 2, 1935, he was a son of the late Harold and Erma Awe Meyer.

Mr. Meyer was a security officer with Burns Security, had worked for Pine State in Shallotte for many years and was a U.S. Navy veteran.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Dennis Meyer.

Survivors include two sons, Brian Meyer and his wife, Patricia, of Shallotte, N.C., and Ed Meyer of Lake Island, N.C.; two daughters, Kay Todd and her husband, John, and Laura Meyer, both of Leland, N.C.; a brother, Richard H. Meyer of Glendale, Ariz.; two sisters, Carol Meyer and Betty June Lichman, both of Mason City; six grandchildren, Melissa Todd, Hope Meyer, Alyssa Meyer, Charity Meyer, Brittany Meyer and Kyle Meyer; and a great-grandchild, Skyler Todd.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Jan. 20, at Shallotte First Baptist Church. Burial was in Brunswick Memorial Gardens in Shallotte, N.C.
