MASON CITY - George W. Thompson, 70, died Friday (Jan. 18, 2002) at Mercy Medical Center- North Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City. Interment will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday at Fullerton Funeral Home.
George was born on Feb. 23, 1931, the son of Jacob P. and Stella Margaret (Brown) Thompson in Mason City. He received his education in the Mason City Community School District. He worked at the Bandbox and the Strand Theater before he was married.
On August 13, 1965, he was united in marriage to Mary Lou Schmidt at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Burlington, Wis. George's work ethic was driven for the well being of his family. He devoted 321/2 years to J.P. Decker's/Armour's packing plant. He was a good father and friend that enjoyed camping, traveling, and watching Western movies and soaps.
George loved spending time with his family and friends and will be greatly missed by his wife of 46 years, Mary Lou, six children; George E. Thompson and his wife, Suzie, of Milwaukee, Wis, Robert Thompson and his wife, Cheryl, of Mason City, Brenda L. Gustafson of Mason City, Russell D. Thompson and his wife, Joanne, of Port Orchard, Wash., Pamela S. Smith and her husband, Michael, of Acworth, Ga., Timothy A. Thompson of Mason City, three sisters; Anna Meyers of Mason City, Virginia Kliven, Mason City, Cora Miller of Ralston, Neb., 13 grandchildren; Andrew, Keith, Jacob, Alysha, Maurice, Brionne, Chenoa, Chad, David, Timothy, Nicole, Jimmy and Cody; three great- grandchildren; Alyssa, Jordon and Christina.
George is preceeded in death by his parents, nine brothers, three sisters and one great grandson, Jeremy Dean.

JOICE - Jarrett Wayne Roberts, 23, of 306 Lake St., Joice, died Friday (Jan. 18, 2002) in Joice.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Fullerton Family of Funeral Homes, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City. Officiating will be the Rev. Steve Smith of Silver Lake Lutheran Church.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral chapel with family greeting friends from 4 to7 p.m. Cremation will follow at Cremation Services of North Iowa in Mason City.
Jarrett was born on May 31, 1978, at Forest City, the son of Jerry and Bridget (Gossman) Roberts. He attended Lake Mills High School, where he received several medals for wrestling. He then lived in the Lake Mills area most of his life.
He worked for Universal Circuits, Inc. and then for Fleetguard. He was currently employed at Top of Iowa Co-op in the grain division at Joice. He was on the bowling league for Fleetguard where he received an award for being best-improved bowler. He spent his spare time socializing with his numerous friends in the North Iowa and Southern Minnesota area. He also bow hunted deer, hunted pheasants and fished at area lakes and streams. Jarrett honed his skills by target and trap shooting and playing golf.
Those thankful in sharing Jarrett's life include his mother, Bridget Neilon, of Northwood; his father, Jerry Roberts, of Lake Mills; his step-father, Alan Neilon, of Albert Lea; Jarrett's special friend, JoAnna Pehrson; two brothers Michael I. Larson, of Fort Worth, Texas, and Wade Roberts, of Cedar Falls, and his special friend, Jennifer Heyer; his maternal grandparents, Lila Gossman, of Buffalo Center, and Duane Gossman, of Thompson; his paternal grandparents, Wayne and Emma Jane Roberts, of Lake Mills; his paternal great-grandparent, Ethel Browning, of Ogalala, Neb.; and several cousins, aunt, uncles and friends.
His family and friends will forever miss Jarrett's free spirit and unconditional love.

GENEVA M. HENDRIKSON
MASON CITY - Geneva M. Hendrikson, 69, of 1225 N. Virginia Ave., died Friday (Jan. 18, 2002) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. James M. Magelssen officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania, Mason City.

Geneva was born Oct. 2, 1932, in Winnebago County, the daughter of Alfred G. and Ida (Bartleson) Brones. She graduated from Northwood High School in 1950 and Waldorf College, where she received her teachers certificate, in 1952.
Geneva married Merle E. Hendrikson on June 19, 1953, in Forest City. She worked as a paraprofessional at Washington and Hoover Elementary Schools for 28 years, retiring in 1998. She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, sang in the church choir and was a member of church circle.
Geneva is survived by her husband, Merle E. Hendrikson, of Mason City; five children, Dr. Ronald Hendrikson and wife, Nancy, of Oberlin, Ohio, Brian Hendrikson and wife, Joan, of Clear Lake, Kevin Hendrikson and wife, Susan, of Ventura, Beth Haack and husband, Tony, of Mason City, and Mark Hendrikson and wife, Niki, of Mason City; 10 grandchildren, Teresa Willard and husband, Jason, Wyatt Reicherts, Will Hendrikson, Brooke Hendrikson, Brianna Hendrikson, Kira Hendrikson, Kristina Hendrikson, Sara Haack and Kastin Hendrikson; brothers, George "Al" Brones and wife, Norma, of Littleton, Colo., Donald Brones and wife, Laura, of Denver, Colo., sister, Charlotte Oulman and husband, Dick, of Scarville; John N. BELMOND - Frances A. Vestweber, 98, of Belmond, passed away Sunday (Jan. 20, 2002) at the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond.
Funeral services for Frances A. Vestweber will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at St. John Lutheran Church in Belmond with Pastor Lowell Halvorson officiating. Burial will take place in the Alexander Cemetery.
Visitation for Frances A. Vestweber will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick's Lane S. in Belmond and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
Frances Alberta Baker Vestweber, the daughter of John D. and Otilla (Farman) Baker, was born Sept. 23, 1903, in Belmond. She was raised in the Belmond area where she attended and graduated from Belmond High School. Frances received her teaching certificate for "normal training" at Cedar Falls. She then taught in the Thornton school system.
Frances was united in marriage to William Conrad Vestweber Jr. on June 4, 1929, in Duluth, Minn. The couple made their home in Belmond and later farmed in the Alexander area. Frances was a homemaker and a loving mother. They retired and moved into Belmond in the 1960s.
Frances was raised in the St. John Lutheran Church and was an active member of the women's circle. Frances loved gardening and canning. She also enjoyed baking pies and bread. Sunday dinner was always a special event.
Frances was a loving mother and grandmother. She always attended and participated in school activities.
Frances is survived by one daughter, Joye Ostendorf, of Meservey; one son, Wayne Vestweber and his wife, Marianne, of McAllen, Texas; 10 grandchildren, Rob Ostendorf and his wife, Diane, of Thornton, Jerry Ostendorf and his wife, Ragina, of Beaverdale, Deb McVicker, of Hampton, Carl Vestweber, of McAllen, Texas, Mark Vestweber, of McAllen, Texas, Sue Oxley and her husband, Eric Paige, of Charlotte, N.C., Nancy Bauer and her husband, Jeff, of Belmond, Betty Zeman and her husband, Lenny, of Cedar Falls, Jeffrey Oxley and his special friend, Ann Young, of Plant City, Fla., and Timothy Oxley and his wife, Rhonda, of Fort Myers, Fla.; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two special sisters-in-law: Mildred Vestweber, of Belmond, and Mabel Vestweber, of Kansas City, Kan., and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Frances was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1991; daughter, Phyllis Oxley, in 2000; son-in-law, Bob, in 1988; five brothers, Glenn, Guy, Ralph, Max, and John; and two sisters, Blanche and Mabel.

PHYLIDA K. GORMAN
GARNER - Phylida K. Gorman, 71, of Garner, died Monday (Jan. 21, 2002) at her home following a strong fight with cancer.
Her memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner with Monsignor Joseph J. Slepicka officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Crystal Township Cemetery in Crystal Lake.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Home, in Garner with a Rosary Society rosary at 7 p.m.
Phylida Kathryn Gorman, the daughter of Melvern and Emma (Nissen) Scanlan, was born March 15, 1930, at Forest City. She grew up in the Crystal Lake area and graduated from Crystal Lake High School in 1947. She then attended La James Beauty School in Mason City.
On Oct. 16, 1949, she was united in marriage to Walter Gorman. They made their home in Algona, Ventura and Garner for the past 42 years. Phylida was employed at Happy ARC as a bus driver, E.F. Johnson in Garner and Rockwell International in Mason City where she retired from in 1993.
She loved being a mother, and especially, a grandmother and great-grandmother. She also loved playing cards with family and her special friends, her dog Chloe, quilting, knitting, sporting events and her yearly trips to San Antonio to visit her daughter, Toni.
Her quick wit and unique sense of humor will be missed by all. She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church.
Phylida is survived by her husband, Walter; three children, Gena Greiman and her husband, Fred, of Garner, Pat Gorman and his wife, Sharon, of Garner and Toni Gorman, of San Antonio, Texas; eight grandchildren, Andrea Greiman, of Garner, Brook Stokes and her husband, Charlie, of Austin, Texas, Melissa Gorman, of Garner, Gail Gouge and her husband, Jeremy, of Garner, Jamie Greiman, of Ames, Luke Greiman, of Garner, Nicole Gorman, of Klemme, and Kate Gorman, of Garner; three great-grandchildren, Taylor Hubbard, Kaden Greiman, and Mykenzie Darg, all of Garner; a great-grandchild, baby Gouge, due in July; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Thilges and Kathryn Gorman, both of California; two nieces, Mary Burton of Arizona and Kathy Cashman of Wisconsin; a nephew, Mick Scanlan, of Washington; and several great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Ivan and Pat Scanlan; a sister-in-law, Rosie Scanlan; a brother-in-law, Bill Thilges; and a niece, Darcy Scanlan.

BELMOND - Funeral services for Aleta E. Waterhouse, 90, will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at Bethany Evangelical and Reformed Church in Ledyard, with the Rev. Victor Vriesen officiating. Interment will be in Highland Home Cemetery in Ledyard.

Aleta E. Waterhouse, the daughter of William and Charlotte (Krueger) Green, was born June 10, 1911, at Ledyard, Iowa. She attended school at Ledyard and graduated from Ledyard High School in 1929.
Aleta was united in marriage to Aubrey Waterhouse on Sept. 5, 1936, in Estherville. They lived in Ledyard where Aubrey was a carpenter contractor, owning his own business, until his death in 1970. Aleta worked at the Ledyard Schools as a hot lunch cook for 19 years until the school closed.
Aleta always enjoyed walking, reading, and being with her family. She was always ready to go on a "road trip" no matter where the car was going.
She was a member of the Evangelical and Reformed Church and the Grace Circle in Ledyard. Aleta belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary and served on the Ledyard Library Board.
She sold her home in August 1995, and moved to Belmond where she lived in the Reddar-McLaughlin Apartments until February of 2001, when she broke her hip. At that time she moved to the Belmond Health Care Center where she lived until her death on Monday (Jan. 21, 2002).
Aleta leaves to mourn her one daughter, Dianne McLaughlin and her husband, Michael, of Belmond; a daughter-in-law, Julie Waterhouse, of Novato, Calif.; a granddaughter, Lori Anderson and her husband, James, of Rohnert Park, Calif.; a grandson, Doug Waterhouse Jr., of Novato, Calif.; five great-grandchildren, Steven, Kevin, and Andrew Anderson, and Sierra and Ric Waterhouse.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Douglas Leon Waterhouse; three brothers, Theodore, Reuben, and Elwood Green; and two sisters, Edna Collins and Esther Green.

CHARLES SCOTT REYNOLDS
PLYMOUTH - Charles Scott Reynolds, 40, of Plymouth, died Sunday (Jan. 20, 2002) at his residence in Plymouth of natural causes.
Charles was born on May 20, 1961, in Mason City, the son of Lester Duane and Judith (Chehock) Reynolds. He was raised in Plymouth on their family farm.
He graduated from North Central High School in Manly in 1980. He then attended North Iowa Area Community College and studied everything from mechanics to accounting and then graduated from NIACC.
Anyone who knew him would know his love for Corvettes and his Fat Boy Harley. When he wasn't cruising on his bike, you would find him on the Web talking with all his friends. He will be greatly and forever missed.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, with Father Ron Friedell officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date.
Visitation will be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Thursday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home.
He is survived by his mother, Judith Reynolds, of Plymouth; one brother, Dave Reynolds and his wife, Tina, of Plymouth; and one niece, Vanessa; and one nephew, Adam, of Plymouth.

RYAN PATRICK STEFFANNI
NORTHWOOD - Ryan Patrick Steffanni, 19, of 107 10th St. South, Northwood, died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001 at his home.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Northwood, with the Rev. Richard Jensen officiating.
Friends may call one hour prior to service time on Saturday at the church.

Ryan was born June 17, 1982, in Norwalk, Ohio, the son of Patrick and Kristie (Jellinger) Steffanni. He attended school at Western Reserve High School in Norwalk, where he was active in show choir, track, basketball, wrestling, football, and baseball.
Ryan was currently a student at Northwood Kensett High School where he was also active in football and baseball.
He loved all kinds of sports and enjoyed camping and going to concerts with his brother. Ryan was a very loving boy who will be missed greatly by all his family and friends.
Ryan is survived by his parents, of Northwood; three siblings, Michael Petersen and his wife, Andrea, of Norwalk, Ohio, Megan Steffanni, of Norwalk, Ohio, and Dane Steffanni, of Northwood; his maternal grandmother, Glorian Kennedy, of Albert Lea, Minn.; his paternal grandmother, Jeanne Steffanni, of Wakeman, Ohio; eight aunts and uncles, Jim Steffanni and his wife, Penny, of Norwalk, Charlie Steffanni and his wife, Pat, of Sandusky, Ohio, Nancy Schuster and her husband, Paul, of Elyria, Ohio, Kevin Steffanni, of Cleveland, Ohio, Mary Ann Steffanni (Ryan's godmother) of Elyria, Ohio, Wesley Jellinger (Ryan's godfather) of Norwalk, Ohio, Jeannie Grubbe of Kensett, and Loreen Pfeifer of Austin, Minn.; three nieces, Keily, Makenzie, and Delaney; one nepeew, Malik; Kyle's fiancée, Heather Wright, of Wakeman, Ohio; and many cousins.

LAKE MILLS - Clara O. Hipp, 82, of Lake Mills, died Monday (Jan. 21, 2002) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday at Salem Lutheran Church with the Rev. Kevin Mackey and the Rev. Roger Dystra officiating. Burial will be at Beaver Creek Cemetery in rural Joice.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 209 N. Washington in Lake Mills and one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.
Clara Orvella Hipp, daughter of Olai and Clara (Rasmusson) Arthur, was born on Nov. 7, 1919, in Williams, Iowa.
She graduated from Forest City High School. She then attended one year at Lutheran Brethren Bible School in Fergus Falls, Minn.
Clara stayed with her grandmother Rasmusson in Williams, Iowa. There she met Fredrick Hipp. Clara and Fredrick were married in March of 1942.
Fred and Clara lived on Fred's home farm near Williams. They moved to Florida where they lived for 28 years. After Fred passed away in 1992, Clara decided to move to Lake Mills. She bought a house in Lake Mills and made it her new home.
She is survived by her brother, Harold Arthur, of Lake Mills; her brother-in-law, James Foss, of Richmond, Wash.; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and many special friends.
Clara was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fred in 1992; one brother, Kermit; and four sisters, Carmen, Addie, Mildred, and Ruth.

RENTON, Wash. - Julie Ann Williams, 43, wife of John T. Palmer, died at 3 p.m. on Sunday (Jan. 13, 2002) at Valley Medical Center in Renton, Wash. It was her request to be cremated.
Memorial services were held on Sunday, Jan. 20, in Renton, Wash.
Julie was born on March 10, 1958, in Mason City, the daughter of Jackie and Judy (Findling) Williams. Raised in Mason City, Julie graduated from Mason City High School, North Iowa Area Community College and went on to get her A.A. degree, majoring in psychology.
After moving to Seattle, Julie attended both North Seattle Community College and Seattle Central Community College, receiving her certification as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Julie continued her education, becoming specialized in Hospice and care for the elderly. She had lived in Washington for more than 20 years.
Julie was very serious about her nursing, becoming charge nurse, shift supervisor, and medical records officer for several retirement communities and nursing homes in the Seattle area.
Julie also became politically active, attending rallies and supporting nursing-related issues.
Julie was a respected member of the Society for Creative Anachronism for more than 15 years, lending her nursing skills to injured fighters and others. She was honored for her skills as a seamstress, especially for her beautiful embroidery. Yet she was best known for her wisdom, her strength of character, and confidence.
Julie maintained the highest of standards for herself and her friends, and earned the respect of all who knew her.
She will be missed by her beloved cats, Gandalf, Mach 5, and Blizzard; and her beloved German Shepard, Thor.
Julie is survived by her husband, Jay Palmer, of Renton, Wash.; her mother, Judith Williams, of Mason City; her father, Jackie H. Williams, of Clear Lake; one sister, Joyce Lansaw and her husband, Mark, of Mason City; two stepsisters, Shelli and Jacki; three brothers, Jerry, of Michigan, John, of Mackinaw, Ill., and Chad, of Mason City.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Jodi; paternal and maternal grandparents.

CLARION - Bernard Eugene Mattingly, 76, of Clarion passed away on Tuesday (Jan. 22, 2002) at the Wright Medical Center Hospice Room.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at St. John's Catholic Church with Monsignor Joseph Slepicka officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Willim Funeral Home in Clarion, with a 7 p.m. Scripture service, followed by a rosary service.
Bernard was born on Dec. 17, 1925, in rural Clarion, the son of Daniel Owen and Nellie Mae (Kastler) Mattingly. He was baptized at St. John's Catholic Church. He was raised and educated in Clarion and graduated from Clarion High School in 1943. He entered the U.S. Navy after graduation and served on a U.S. Navy carrier.
Bernard married Bethene Faulkner at St. John's Catholic Church on June 28, 1947. They made their home in Clarion where they raised their family.
Bernard worked for McNeal Grain, Cyanimid, Farm Service and Hagie Manufacturing. After his retirement he enjoyed working visitations and driving the funeral coach for Willim Funeral Home.
Bernard was a member of St. John's Catholic Church. He also belonged to the Knights of Columbus, Clarmond Country Club, American legion and the Lions Club for many years. He served on the hospital board for 28 years and was a member of the Jaycees.
Bernard is survived by his wife, Bethene; and two children, Kathryn (Gary) Bessman, of Alden, and Kelley (Tim) O'Keefe, of Manly; one sister, Emily Harris, of Lake Cornelia; three grandchildren, Megan, Molly and Kathleen O'Keefe; and many nieces and nephews.

OSAGE - C. Dale Johnson, 77, of 825 N. Nursery Ave. in Osage, died Tuesday (Jan. 22, 2002) at the Waverly Municipal Hospital in Waverly.
Dale was born on June 20, 1924, near Carpenter, the son of Clarence and Ruth (Parker) Johnson. He attended Carpenter School until his junior year and then graduated from Orchard Consolidated School in 1942.
He became a member of the Meroa Rock Creek Lutheran Church in 1947. On March 19, 1950, he was united in marriage to Marjorie Kittleson at First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar. They then resided in Otranto for five years where Dale farmed, later moving west of Osage where he farmed for 29 years, until 1985 when he retired and they moved to Osage.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage and continue one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.
Dale was a good father and friend who enjoyed watching his family grow up and going to all the sporting events of his grandchildren.

CRYSTAL LAKE - Arlene "Babe" Jamtgaard, 81, formerly of Crystal Lake, passed away Monday (Jan. 21, 2002) at the Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs.

Arlene Younie Jamtgaard, the daughter of William and Mabel (Hedden) Younie, was born Dec. 21, 1920, at Hawarden. She was baptized in the Baptist Church at Hawarden. She attended school and graduated from the Hawarden school system.
Babe was united in marriage with Orval Jamtgaard on Oct. 8, 1939, in Sioux City and moved to Sioux City in December of 1939.
In February of 1946, the couple moved to Crystal Lake where Orval was a blacksmith while Babe took care of the home and family.
Following Orval's retirement, the couple wintered in Arizona. Arlene enjoyed bowling and golfing. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for many years.
She is survived by two sons, Orval Gene Jamtgaard Jr. and his wife, Jan, of Nora Springs, and John Duane Jamtgaard and his friend, Teresia, of Mason City; two grandsons, Michael and Mark; one great-grandson, Joseph; two great-granddaughters, Katherine Arlene and Samantha Kay; five nephews and one niece.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Orval, in 2000, one brother and two sisters.

MELBOURNE, Fla. - John L. Springer, 75, passed away on Friday (Jan. 11, 2002) at his home in Melbourne, Fla.
He was born in Delavan, Minn., and grew up in Mason City, Iowa.
Mr. Springer joined the Marine Corps serving 20 years of active service and 10 as a reservist.
After the corps he resided in Clear Lake and Mason City until moving to Melbourne 61/2 years ago.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, two sisters, three nephews, one niece, and by his special little kitty, Max.
He is survived by his wife, Janet (Hedges); son, David; sister and husband, Dorothy and Charles Stark, of Mason City; brother-in-law, Paul Osby, of Council Bluffs; nieces and nephews.
Services and interment were in Florida National Cemetery with full military honors.

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - Barbara Bergdale Stuart, 63, passed away of natural causes peacefully in her sleep on Sunday (Jan. 20, 2002) in her home in Rancho Cordova.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at East Lawn Mortuary, 5757 Greenback Lane, Sacramento, Calif. Interment will follow at East Lawn Sierra Hill Memorial Park.
Barbara was born Sept. 24, 1938, in Forest City, Iowa, to Alfred and Ethel (Myli) Bergdale of Hanlontown. She was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church. She graduated from Hanlontown High School in 1956.
After graduation, Barbara joined the WACs where she played clarinet in the U.S. Army Band. She married Jack Y. Stuart and during their marriage lived in Germany and Okinawa where he was serving in the Army, before settling in Sacramento.
Barbara was employed for 25 years at Mercury Insurance and at the time of her death was an administrative underwriter.
She is survived by her three loving sons, Jack Stuart, Robert Stuart and his wife, Karen, and Scott Stuart, all of Rancho Cordova; one brother, Mark and Julie Bergdale, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and four sisters, Carol and LeRoy Navratil, of Plymouth, Dagna and Michael Simmons, of Austin, Minn., Faith and Dave Bartels, of Hanlontown, and Lindsey Van de Kirk and her husband, Jim Roller, of San Antonio, Texas; also many nieces, nephews, cousins and her best friend, Jill.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Y. Stuart, in November of 1993; her parents, Alfred and Ethel Bergdale; and two brothers, Alan and Dwight Bergdale.
Barbara will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Norbert, the son of Steve and Katie (Huemann) Mullenbach, was born Nov. 29, 1925, in rural Stacyville.
He attended Visitation Catholic School in Stacyville. Norbert was united in marriage to Irene Johanns on April 11, 1953, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in New Haven. They farmed south of Stacyville until their retirement when they moved to Osage.
Norbert always enjoyed a good card game, cribbage, bowling or just visiting with his family and friends. He truly loved farming, gardening and enjoyed raising and working with his Percheron draft horses.
Norbert was very active in the community, serving on boards at Visitation Catholic Church, the Stacyville Coop Elevator, and the ASCS. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage, the Catholic Order of Foresters and the Knights of Columbus. Because of Norbert's love for young people, the family asks that memorials be given to a scholarship fund at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage.

Dorothy Marie Parker Merfeld was born Feb. 11, 1918, near Marble Rock, the daughter of Arthur and Daisy Alice (Brown) Parker. She graduated from the Marble Rock High School in 1936.
On Feb. 13, 1939, Dorothy was united in marriage to Harry Merfeld at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene. Following their marriage they farmed southwest of Marble Rock near Dougherty until 1953, when they moved to LeRoy, Minn. They moved to Greene in 1957. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Dorothy enjoyed doing embroidery work, refinishing furniture, jigsaw puzzles, word search puzzles, cooking and baking.
Living family members include four daughters and their husbands, Sharon and Marlyn "Jack" Wunsch, Rose and Richard Klunder, Bonnie and Jim Knapp, and Annette and Ron Ascher, all of Greene; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two sisters and their husbands, Gail and Bob Kammeyer, of Greene, and Wilma "Billie" and Leroy Kingery, of Marble Rock; and two brothers, Kenneth "Mike" and his wife, Ranee Parker, and Russell "Barney" Parker, both of Marble Rock.

CHARLES CITY - Roger Lee Field, 65, a resident of 1907 Owen Street, Charles City, died Thursday, (Jan. 24, 2002) at his home after a short battle with cancer.

Roger Lee Field was born March 15, 1936, in Floyd, the son of Harry "Doc" and Eunice (Stewart) Field. He graduated from Rudd High School. Following graduation he married Helen Christiansen and to this union four children were born. In 1978, he married Loretta Gourley. He farmed and worked at White Farm Corporation for many years. On July 16, 1993, Roger was united in marriage to Nancy (Wolske) Gruben in Charles City. Following their marriage they spent precious years together fishing, playing cards and enjoying laughter at the many stories Roger enjoyed telling his many friends and family. He could always be seen with a cheerful smile. Roger was a member of the Rock Creek Lutheran Church. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy Reserve from July 2, 1954, until his honorable discharge on July 1, 1962.
Living family members include his mother, Eunice Field, of Charles City; wife, Nancy; four children and their spouses, Dr. Rebecca Tate of North Carolina, Loren and Lenore Field of Hinton, Robin and Steven Fox of Lakeville, Minn. and Ward and Shannon Field of Pine Island, Minn.; three stepchildren of Nancy's, Lynn Morse, Mark Gruben and Michael Gruben; five stepchildren of Loretta Gourley's, Kirk Gourley, Rick Gourley, Mick Gourley, Dave Gourley and Jodi Greve; six grandchildren; many stepgrandchildren; two brothers, Eddie Field of Floyd, Kenneth Field and wife, Kathy, of Clear Lake; three sisters, Pat Swedberg and husband, Deryl, of Lancaster, Mo., Judy Schilling and husband, Robert, of Cedar Falls and Ginger Schipman of Nora Springs; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

CAROLE KAYE TAYLOR
MASON CITY - Carole Kaye Shelton Taylor was born Dec. 3, 1938, in Kanawha, to James Elvin Shelton and Marie Elizabeth Freerksen Shelton. She was raised in Kanawha and graduated from Britt High School in 1957.
Carole married Kent Taylor in 1958. They raised their family and made their home in Mason City. Carole dedicated her life to helping others. She sponsored a self help group for teenagers for many years, provided child care in her home, worked as an instructor at NIVC, and for the last 10 years contributed her skills at Prairie Ridge Treatment Center in Mason City.
Carole loved bird watching, gardening, reading, crafts, traveling and weekly reunions with her sisters, brother and brothers-in-law. Family was a top priority for Carole always. She adored her children and grandchildren.
She enriched the lives of many long-time friends, offered a quick and ready smile, a warm word of encouragement, a keen ear and strong shoulder.
Carole is survived by her best friend and companion, Kenny Cline, of Mason City; three daughters, Kelly Kruggel and husband, Kurt, of Rockwell, Shelly Doescher and husband, Doug, of Mankato, Minn., and Mindy Boyd and husband, Mike, of Mason City; beloved grandchildren, Kyle Taylor, of Iowa City, Pierson Taylor, of Rockwell, Casey Boyd, of Owatonna, Minn., Tess, Taylor, and Mykl Boyd, of Mason City, and Randi Kay and Derek Doescher, of Mankato, Minn.; great-grandson, Davin Parent, of Mason City; sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Stanton Brunes, of Goodell; sister, Marjorie Clark, of Mason City; brother, Jim Shelton, of Cedar Falls; and brother-in-law, Dayton Adreon, of Britt.
Carole was preceded in death by her parents; great-grandson, Baby Shad; sister, Dorothy Westin; and brother-in-law, Carl Westin; and sister, Lois Adreon.
Carole crossed over on Tuesday (Jan. 22, 2002) in her home surrounded by friends and family. Carole courageously fought cancer for the last several months of her life.
Memorial and celebration of Carole's life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at Ewing Funeral Home in Britt, with Rosie Schlueter, Mercy Hospital Chaplain, officiating. Inurnment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

ELMER L. HEWITT JR.
MASON CITY - Elmer L. Hewitt Jr., 51 of 919 N. Jefferson Ave., died Wednesday morning (Jan. 23, 2002) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.
His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. David Kucera officiating. Interment will be at Park Cemetery, Nora Springs.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Fullerton Family of Funeral Homes, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City, with a parish wake service at 7 p.m. Further visitation will continue one hour before services at the church.
Elmer was born on Sept. 22, 1950, to Elmer LeRoy Sr. and Betty Jane (Lewis) Hewitt at Nora Springs. He attended high school and then took business classes at North Iowa Area Community College.
He owned and operated Hewitt Hauling for many years until he was disabled.
Elmer was united in marriage to Rita Colleen Mitchell on June 24, 1968, at Sioux Falls, S. D. To this union was born two sons. He gave of his time as a Scoutmaster for Troop 401 and then later as a Cub Scout Leader for Pack 153.
He thoroughly enjoyed being a Civil War re-enactor and spending his time educating and entertaining people at nursing homes and schools with his knowledge of the Civil War. He served as a captain of the 8th Texas Dismounted Calvary. During the off-season he enjoyed using the Internet and entertaining his grandchildren.
Elmer was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, the Hampton VFW and was a former member of the American Legion. His family and many friends will miss Elmer's sense of humor.
Those thankful in sharing Elmer's life include his wife of 33 years, Rita Hewitt, of Mason City; his two sons, Jerry and his wife, DeAnna Hewitt, and their four children, Allison, Brandon, Lois and Jeremiah, and Tom and his wife, Christy Hewitt, and their child, Jesse, all of Mason City; three sisters, Joyce and her husband, Harley Shaw, of Orchard, Connie and her husband, Gary Graham, of Rockford, and Lola and her husband, John Mills, of Rosemont, Minn.; and two brothers, Gene Lewis, of Marion, and William Burgess, of Northwood; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents and parents; one brother, Jerry Hewitt; and one nephew, Scott Hewitt.

ALICE M. DONOHUE
FOREST CITY - Alice M. Donohue, 84, formerly of Forest City, died Monday, (Jan. 21, 2002) at Manor Care in Westerville, Ohio.
Her funeral will be 10:30 a..m. today at Forest Evangelical Lutheran Church in Forest City, with the Rev. Theodore Gullixson officiating. Burial will be at Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City.
Alice M. Donohue was born in Algona on Aug. 23, 1917, the daughter of Carl and Martha (Dreyer) Geilenfeld. She married Marion J. Donohue on March 30, 1941.
Alice was a long-time Forest City resident and business woman who was owner or part-owner in a beauty shop, The Casual Shop, Forest Fashions and Donohue Sporting Goods. An avid bridge player, bowler and member of Forest Evangelical Lutheran Church, she will be missed by many.
Alice is survived by two sons, James Donohue and wife, Janice Collette, of Gahanna, Ohio and David Donohue and wife, Linda, of Roland; also surviving are four grandchildren, Trent and his wife Jenny, and Kevin, Jason and Jenni; a great-grandchild, Marin; brother, Henry Geilenfeld and wife, Maybelle; sisters-in-law, Marie Stokesbary, Cora Donohue and Marie Donohue; brother-in-law, Richard Donohue and wife, Betty; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Martha Geilenfeld; her husband, Marion, granddaughter, Krista Donohue, and a sister, Esther Brunsvold.

BARBARA BERGDALE STUART
RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - Barbara Bergdale Stuart, 63, passed away of natural causes peacefully in her sleep on Sunday (Jan. 20, 2002) in her home in Rancho Cordova.
Her funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at East Lawn Mortuary, 5757 Greenback Lane, Sacramento, Calif. Interment will follow at East Lawn Sierra Hill Memorial Park.
Barbara was born Sept. 24, 1938, in Forest City, to Alfred and Ethel (Myli) Bergdale of Hanlontown. She was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church. She graduated from Hanlontown High School in 1956.
After graduation, Barbara joined the WACs, where she played clarinet in the U.S. Army Band. She married Jack Y. Stuart and during their marriage lived in Germany and Okinawa, where he was serving in the Army, before settling in Sacramento.
Barbara was employed for 25 years at Mercury Insurance and at the time of her death was an administrative underwriter.
She is survived by her three loving sons, Jack Stuart, Robert Stuart and his wife, Karen, and Scott Stuart, all of Rancho Cordova; one brother, Mark and Julie Bergdale, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and four sisters, Carol and LeRoy Navratil, of Plymouth, Dagna and Michael Simmons, of Austin, Minn., Faith and Dave Bartels, of Hanlontown, and Lindsey Van de Kirk and her husband, Jan Roller, of San Antonio, Texas; also many nieces, nephews, cousins and her best friend, Jill.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Y. Stuart, in November of 1993; her parents, Alfred and Ethel Bergdale; and two brothers, Alan and Dwight Bergdale.
