ESTHER IRENE LAUTERBACH STRICKLAND
MASON CITY - Esther Irene Lauterbach Strickland died peacefully on Saturday evening, 13 January 2001, at the Good Shepherd Home in Mason City.
She was 103, born 20 May 1897 in Colby, Kansas. Her long life, which touched on three centuries, was celebrated in 1997 by a gathering in Mason City of all her loving family on the occasion of her 100th birthday.
Esther was the fourth child of German immigrant/banker August Lauterbach and his wife, Sophie. She was educated in Colby public schools and then Washburn College in Topeka, Kansas, where she was a member of Alpha Phi sorority and graduated with a degree in public school music. She was teaching music in Colby when she met Charles E. Strickland, a young banker from Junction City, Kansas. The couple married on 27 December 1919, following Charles' return from service in World War I.
Her husband's business career brought moves to Denver, Colorado, Cleveland, Ohio, and Chicago, Illinois. But in 1937, when Charles became President of the People's Gas and Electric Company in Mason City, they found their lasting home. Together in Mason City and Clear Lake, they created a fine life and raised their three daughters.
Both believed in service to one's community. Charles was an active Mason City booster through the Rotary Club, the Chamber of Commerce, and myriad other organizations and interests to which he gave his loyal support. He is memorialized by the auditorium named for him at Lime Creek Nature Center in honor of his service as an original and longtime member of the County Conservation Board.
Esther's interests, outside of the warm and loving home she maintained for her children, other family members, and everyone's friends, centered around her church and other service entities. She was a leading member of the Altar Guild of St. John's Episcopal Church, an activity that she loved and to which for many years she devoted many hours each week. She was a founding member of the CE chapter of PEO in Colby, Kansas, in the 1920s and participated loyally in the work of local PEO chapters wherever she lived, most recently the DZ Chapter in Mason City. She gave time and service to such organizations as the Red Cross, the Republican Party, the YWCA, and the Girl Scouts. But Esther also recognized the value of living a full life -she traveled extensively - friends all remember her as a "fantastic bridge player," her creative cooking was legendary.
Esther Strickland believed strongly in sharing the important advantages of life with others. To that end, her charitable gifts have included, in addition to the auditorium at Lime Creek Center, a special endowment for music and worship at St. John's Episcopal Church, an endowment for two music scholarships annually at NIACC, annual support and two fine prints for the MacNider Museum, and recently a major gift to the Mason City Foundation for a recording studio at Music Man Square and continuing work on the Park Inn. In 1992 she was honored as Philanthropist of the Year by the North Iowa Fund Raising Professionals. Underlying all this, and even more important, was Esther Strickland's extraordinary generosity of spirit, the love and support she gave selflessly to these many concerns, personal and institutional.
Two of Esther's daughters, Anne Strickland Cameron and Jean Strickland Savage, live in Mason City, and the third daughter, Mary Strickland Kimball, lives in Piedmont, California. Other survivors include Anne's two sons, Robert Marsh Cameron of Mason City and Charles William Cameron and his son, Daniel Myles Cameron, Whitefish, Montana. Jean's children are Anne Selman of Boston, Massachusetts, and her two sons, Matthew and Jesse; Susan Pearce of Brookmont, Maryland; William Strickland Pearce of West Glover, Vermont, and his two daughters, Jean Marie and Hannah; John Kenet Pearce of Gregory, Michigan, and his daughter Emily. Daughter Mary has one child, Elisabeth Margaret Kimball, Minneapolis, Minnesota. In all, three daughters, seven grandchildren, and six great grandchildren -they will all miss Esther Lauterbach Strickland very much.
A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 11:00 A.M., Saturday, 17 February 2001. Memorials can be directed to the St. John's Episcopal Church, Lime Creek Nature Center or an organization of choice.
