HAMPTON - Robert E. Luther, 68, died Friday (Jan. 14, 2000) at his home in Hampton.

CLARION - Joy Davis, 57, formerly of Guthrie Center, died Tuesday (Jan. 18, 2000) at Richland Center Hospital, Richland Center, Wis.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, at Bowman Chapel in Guthrie Center. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Guthrie Center.

Friends may call after noon Friday at Beidelman Funeral Home, Guthrie Center. The family will be present to greet friends from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home Friday.

STANLEY A. WITZEL SR.

OCEANSIDE, Calif. - Stanley A. Witzel Sr., 95, passed away Monday (Dec. 20, 1999) at his residence.

Stanley was born Nov. 18, 1904, in Rudd, to Ed and Bertha (Muller) Witzel. He received his agricultural engineering degree at Iowa State University, Ames, and his masters degree in civil engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Stanley married Adalene Jahns of Spring Valley, Minn., on March 3, 1927. He taught agricultural engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for more than 40 years, specializing in farm structures and soils. During this time, Professor and Adalene Witzel lived in the Cooksville and Madison area.

He lived in Nigeria, Africa, for three years, where he established the Department of Agricultural Engineering at the University of IFE near Ibadan, Nigeria. Professor Witzel was a recipient of the 1972 Cyrus Hall McCormick Award from the American Society of Agricultural Engineering for achievement in agriculture. Stanley also received the Silver Plate Award. Professor Witzel was very dedicated to his career, devoting much of his time to various committees and honorable causes.

He retired in 1972, moving to Texas and starting a citrus farm. In 1991 he met and married Phoebe Borden and resided in Oceanside, Calif., writing and publishing two books on his full and successful life.

Stanley is survived by his wife, Phoebe (Borden) Witzel, of Oceanside, Calif.; sons, Dr. Stanley Jr. (Betty) Witzel, of North Caldwell, N.J., and Jahn (Janice) Witzel, of Stoughton, Wis.; sisters, Edna, Selma and Iola; grandchildren, Blair (Heidi), Erich (Melissa), David, Christi, Glenn (Sandy) and Laura; and great-grandchildren, Lauren, Andrew, Lily and Charles.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wives, Adalene (Jahns) and Freda (Martin); sons, Wilford and Theodore; and a brother, Homer.

He will be remembered as a very loving man who was devoted to God and supportive to those who were in need.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at Stoughton United Methodist Church, 525 Lincoln Ave., Stoughton, Wis.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the University of Wisconsin Foundation, in care of Professor Stanley Witzel Memorial Fund, 1848 University Ave., Madison, WI 53705.

LONE ROCK - Vernon C. Culbertson, 60, died Thursday (Jan. 20, 2000) at Kossuth Regional Health Center, Algona.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at United Presbyterian Church, Lone Rock. Burial will be in Burt Township Cemetery, Burt.

ALVINA MATSON

RAKE - Alvina Matson, 96, died Wednesday (Jan. 19, 2000) at the Timely Mission Nursing Home, Buffalo Center.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church in Rake, with Dr. Jennifer Edinger officiating. Burial will be at East Cemetery, Rake.

Visitation will be from 12:30 until the time of the service at church Saturday. Winter Funeral Home, Buffalo Center, is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Mabel Alvina Matson, daughter of Alfred and Julia (Quam) Kallestad, was born Dec. 8, 1903, near Frost, Minn.

She was baptized in the Lutheran faith and confirmed at the Lincoln Church on Feb. 2, 1919, by the Rev. O. M. Veride.

On March 17, 1926, Alvina was married to Nordahl Matson. They farmed around Rake all of their married life. Alvina was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Rake.

Alvina is survived by two daughters, Marian and her husband, Gene Johnson, of Alamo, Texas, and Carolyn and her husband, David Broers, of Rockland, Wis.; one son, Lyle and his wife, Roselyn, of Rake; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brothers, Melvin, Emil, Irvin, Lester and Maynard; one sister, Alice; and one granddaughter, Patricia.

BRAD D. ZUEHL

BRITT - Brad D. Zuehl, 21, passed away Wednesday (Jan. 19, 2000) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church, Britt, with Pastor Robert Dodge officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Britt.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ewing Funeral Home, Britt, and will resume one hour prior to services at the church Saturday.

Brad, the son of Doug and Kathy Schleuger Zuehl, was born Dec. 17, 1978, in Britt. Brad grew up in the Britt area and graduated from West Hancock High School in 1997.

While in high school Brad was employed at the Red Rooster Restaurant, Britt. Following graduation, Brad was employed at Kiefer Built in Kanawha and later at Winnebago Industries in Forest City.

Brad was a confirmed member of the United Methodist Church, Britt.

He enjoyed fishing, radio-controlled cars, movies, TV and Chevys.

Brad is survived by his parents, Doug and Kathy Zeuhl, of Britt; one brother, Jake Zuehl, of Wesley; his maternal grandparents, Glenn and Jackie Schleuger, of Britt; his paternal grandparents, Denny and June Zuehl, of Britt; his maternal great-grandmother, Marie Schleuger, of Britt; and his paternal great-grandmother, Helena Zuehl, Britt.

CHARLES CITY - Betty Davidson, 71, of 1403 Cleveland Ave., died Thursday (Jan. 20, 2000) at Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., Charles City. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

ALICE NAOMI KEELING

BELMOND - Alice Naomi Keeling, 90, died Tuesday (Jan. 18, 2000) at the Community Memorial Hospital in Clarion.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Church of Christ, Clarion, with Mark Young officiating. Burial of her ashes will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Clarion. Willim Funeral Home, Clarion, is in charge of the arrangements, (515) 523-2233.

Alice Naomi Dresher was born April 15, 1909, on a farm southwest of Kanawha in Hancock County. Her parents were William and Eva (Mortz) Dresher.

Alice became the bride of Orie Ned Keeling on Dec. 17, 1930, at Belmond in the Reformed Church parsonage.

Their first home was west of Goodell, where Orie started farming. They lived there for two years. They then moved to a farm west of Popejoy and Orie worked for Frank DeForest for three years. Later they moved to a farm near Clarion and Orie worked for Ralph Marshall for two years. They then moved into Clarion, where Orie worked for Cliff Evans and Dewey Simmons and hauled coal for Telford's.

In 1947 they moved to a farm five miles east of Clarion, where they farmed until they retired in 1980. After they retired, they made their home in Belmond.

Her husband Orie died in July of 1995.

In 1997, Alice entered the Leinbach Center at Belmond and resided there until she entered the hospital last March. Alice died Tuesday, Jan. 18, at Community Memorial Hospital, Clarion, at the age of 90.

Alice liked working in her garden and yard, sewing for her children, grand and great-grandchildren, doing needle work, fishing and entertaining her family of 34 at Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

She was a member of the marathon 500 Card Club and the Grandmothers Club in Belmond.

Alice is survived by her children, Lois and her husband, Raynard Southard, Clarion, Beverly and her husband, Robert Delger, Clarion, Shirley and her husband, Gerald Curran, Waterloo, Judy and her husband, Roger Wiemann, Alexander, and Verlyn Keeling and his wife, Joyce, Rowan; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and sisters, Effie and Ila Mae.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, Ed, Dutch and Charles; a sister, Margaret; and a great-grandson, Michael Alan Johnson.

DELORES M. JOHNSON

KANAWHA - Delores M. Johnson, 75, died Thursday (Jan. 20, 2000) at the Kanawha Community Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Lutheran Church in Kanawha, with the Rev. Keith Sievers officiating. Burial will be in Amsterdam Township Cemetery, Kanawha.

FERNE RICH

CLEAR LAKE - Ferne Rich, 83, of Clear Lake, died Thursday (Jan. 20, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date at Memorial Park Columbarium in Mason City.

Family will greet friends one hour prior to services on Monday at the Church.

Ferne was born Aug. 16, 1916 in Clinton, the daughter of Herbert and Bessie (Grafft) Frazier. She graduated from Lost Nation Iowa High School in 1934 and graduated from the University of Iowa with a bachelor of sciences degree in 1938.

She entered nursing school at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md., in September of 1941. She was in Student Nursing Cadet Corps. She graduated in September of 1944 and was assigned to the Navy. She stayed at John Hopkins Hospital as a supervisor and surgical nursing instructor until December of 1946.

She married William C. Rich on Dec. 27, 1946, and moved to Clear Lake in 1949. She became involved in activities of the Methodist Church (Supt. of Sunday school, Altar guild and life member of the United Methodist Women). She also was chairman of delivery services of Meals On Wheels, served on the Opportunity Village Store board and worked in the Opportunity Village Store for 20 years. She was treasurer of the Friends of the Library board.

She taught nursing at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City from 1960 to 1963. She was an active member of the PEO Sisterhood, DAR, Delta Gamma Sorority, Friendly Garden Club, Questors and the Civil Air Patrol.

Survivors include her husband, William C. Rich, of Clear Lake; a son, Bruce and his wife, Diane, of Sacramento, Calif., and their son, Benjamin Rich and daughter, Katie Rich; a daughter, Vicki Rich Stark and her husband, Jeff, of Tampa, Fla.; and one sister, Jane Frazier Crawford, of Jackson, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Anne Frazier Trowbridge.

M. BLANCHE PFLIEGER

PLYMOUTH - M. Blanche Pflieger, 95, of Manly and formerly of Plymouth and Osage, died Thursday (Jan. 20, 2000) at the Manly Care Center.

Mildred was born on April 4, 1904, in Hamilton County near Webster City, the daughter of Albert and Rosa (Albright) Adams. She moved to Mitchell County with her family.

She married Frank Pflieger on Sept. 6, 1926, in Osage. They farmed in the Mitchell, Osage and Little Cedar areas. In 1937 they moved near Riceville and farmed there until Frank's death in 1958. Blanche moved to Osage, and in 1978 she moved to Plymouth.

When she lived in Osage, she was an active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. When she lived in Plymouth, she was an active member of the Plymouth United Methodist Church.

She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Plymouth, with the Rev. Debra Stowers and the Rev. Richard Pippert officiating. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Liberty Cemetery in Little Cedar.

Visitation will be held from 2:30 to 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Champion Funeral Home, Osage, and one hour prior to services on Monday at the Church.

She is survived by one son, Robert Pflieger and his wife, Doris, of Plymouth; three sisters, Christina Thurnau of Osage, Mary Gerbig of Osage, and Phyllis Bruggeman of St. Ansgar; 10 grandchildren, John Warburton and his wife, Mel, of Janesville, Terry Sprung and her husband, Stan, of Plymouth, Ann Arndorfer and her husband, Jerry, of Britt, Martin Warburton, of Mason City, Kathy Thoms and her husband, Bill, of Waverly, DeLaine Warburton, of Britt, Sandy Rezab and her husband, Jim, of Ankeny, Donna Holloway, of Plymouth, Cindy Dahl and her husband, David, of Mason City, and Lori Pflieger, of Mason City; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank, in 1958; a son, Roger Pflieger; a daughter, Rosa Warburton; a son-in-law, Harry Warburton; a sister, Hazel McFarland; and three brothers, Charlie, Vernie and Leo Adams.

DELORES M. JOHNSON

KANAWHA - Delores M. Johnson, 75, of Kanawha, passed away Thursday (Jan. 20, 2000) at the Kanawha Community Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Lutheran Church in Kanawha, with Pastor Keith Sievers officiating. Burial will be in the Amsterdam Township Cemetery in Kanawha.

Delores was born on Oct. 19, 1924, in Dows, the daughter of Elmer and Florence Trowbridge Sturgeon. She graduated from Belmond High School in 1942. Delores was united in marriage to Gaylen D. Johnson on Nov. 6, 1943, in Belmond. They resided in Belmond until 1954, when they moved to Kanawha to farm.

Delores worked at Winnebago Industries and then at Farmers State Bank until she retired in June of 1987. Her favorite hobbies were cooking and baking, along with bowling, playing cards and dancing. She also was an active member of the Kanawha Lutheran Church.

Delores is survived by her husband, Gaylen, of Kanawha; two daughters, Angela Strege and her husband, Kevin, of Bakersfield, Calif. and Andrea Mallen, of Mason City and her special friend, Denny Honsey, of Minneapolis, Minn.; one son, Todd Johnson, of Buffalo Center; one daugher-in-law, Sherry Johnson, of Kanawha; five grandchildren, Travis and his wife, Sue, of Grimes, Chad, of West Des Moines and his fiancee, Steph, of Belmond, Jade, of Clinton, Mitchell, of Buffalo Center and Jacey, of Britt; and one great-grandson, Drew; two sisters, Henrietta Jenison, of Belmond and June Deiser and her husband, George, of Owatonna, Minn.; one sister-in-law, Mabel Sturgeon, of Clarion; and many nieces and nephews.

Delores was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Tony Johnson; and one greatgrandson, Jordan Chase Johnson; two brothers, Dale Sturgeon and Gene Sturgeon; three sisters, Elizabeth Langland, Lucille White and Marjorie Regal.

FOREST CITY - Chester "Chet" McColloch, 80, of Forest City, died Thursday (Jan. 20, 2000) at his home in Forest City.

WILMA 'BILLIE' FRIEDRICHSEN

MASON CITY - Wilma "Billie" Friedrichsen, 82, of Mason City, and formerly of Olin, died Friday (Jan. 21, 2000) at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics at Iowa City from congestive heart failure.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the St. John Lutheran Church in Olin, with Pastor Jennifer Henry officiating. Interment will be in the Olin Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Hayden Funeral Home in Olin.

She was born on July 6, 1917, at Preston, the daughter of Fred and Dora (Gehlsen) Stamp, and received her education in Preston and in Chicago, Ill. Billie's mother died when she was 10 years old, and when she was 16, she moved to live with an aunt near Miles. It was there that she met the young man she would marry.

On March 2, 1935, Billie married LeRoy "Pike" Friedrichsen at Miles. The couple began their married lives in Miles, where they lived until moving to a farm north of Stanwood in 1938. They farmed there until moving into Olin in the early 1970s. Pike died in 1990, and in 1994 Billie moved to Mason City. Billie spent her winters in Zapata, Texas, for many years and was there when her last illness became severe.

Billie was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Olin, the Happy Homemakers Card Club and the Olin Garden Club. She loved to work outside tending her flowers or helping with the farm work. She also loved animals and sewing.

Billie is survived by two daughters, Janet Friis and her husband, Paul, of West Branch and Sandra "Sandy" Wiskus-Paulson and her husband, Larry Paulson, of Clear Lake; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and one brother, Erwin "Dick" Stamp, of Bellevue.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers and one sister.

NORINE M. WICKLUND

CHARLES CITY - Norine M. Wicklund, 81, a resident of 1106 Ellis Drive, died peacefully at home on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 22, 2000.

A funeral Mass for Norine Wicklund will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City, with the Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery at Evergreen Park, Ill.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 South Main St., Charles City, from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday, where the family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. There will be a vigil scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Visitation will continue Tuesday from 9 a.m. until noon at the funeral home and Tuesday afternoon at the church one hour prior to the Mass.

Norine M. Shinnick Wicklund was born Oct. 30, 1918, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of John J. and Mary V. Shinnick. She attended St. Gabriels Catholic Grammar School and Laretto High School in Chicago. Before marriage she worked as a bookkeeper.

On June 2, 1945, she married Arvid John Wicklund in Miami, Fla. After the war, they made their home in Chicago, where she concentrated on being a wife and a mother. Later she returned to various bookkeeping positions until retiring from McDonald's Corporation in 1981 to move to Charles City to help with raising her grandchildren. She was active in the Charles City Senior Citizens, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Lay Carmelites, St. Anthony's Circle and the Charles City Women's Club. She loved sports, talking and visiting with friends, and participating in the lives of her grandchildren.

Living family members include two daughters, Barbara (Mrs. Sam) Soifer of Charles City, and Jo Ann (Mrs. Dave) Robinson of Fonthill, Ont., Canada; two sons, John Wicklund of Romeoville, Ill., and Bill and his wife, Pat Wicklund, of Naperville, Ill.; six grandchildren, Scott, Shawn and Regina Soifer and Matt, Jessica and Eric Wicklund.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1975; a son, James Raymond; a daughter, Mary Beth; three unnamed children; two brothers, Bernie and Jack; and a sister, Mary.

ALBERT LEA, MINN. - Funeral services for Margaret LaVon Benner, 79, of Albert Lea, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Church of St. Theodore, Albert Lea, with the Rev. Louis Cook officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Newry.

LaVon died Friday (Jan. 21, 2000) at the Albert Lea Medical Center.

Margaret LaVon Benner was born July 14, 1920, in Britt, the daughter of Tom and Margaret (Horstman) O'Rourke. She grew up and attended school in Britt.

On March 26, 1940, she married Lester G. Benner in Britt. They moved to Mason City after their marriage and to Hollandale in 1954, where they farmed. In 1974, they moved into Albert Lea. She was a former member of St. Mary's Church, Newry, a member of the Church of St. Theodore, Albert Lea, a member of the Eagles Auxiliary, and a member of Solo Parents. She loved to play bingo and traveled on cruises and many trips to Europe. She loved dancing and joke-telling. She was famous for her baked beans. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and her great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her children, Georgia Alt and her special friend, Virgil Grosland, Kay and her husband, Tom Sawyer, all of Albert Lea, Charles and his wife, Joyce Benner, of Austin, Minn., William Benner, of Albert Lea, Sheila and her husband, Dan McNallan, of Viola, John Benner, of Minneapolis, Minn., Marie Schaub and her husband, Terry Hockert, of Lino Lakes, Minn., and Brian Benner, of Albert Lea; 15 grandchildren, Roger Alt, Lisa Deyo, Cindy Fosenburg, Debbie Grausam, Diane Moore, Todd Benner, Troy Benner, Char Skogheim, Brad Benner, Chad Benner, Sheena Meyers, Matt McNallan, Shelly Rahman, Jenny McNallan and Damien Schaub; 17 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and her very special friends, Thelma Hall and Blanche Wogen.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lester in 1966; granddaughter, Tammy Benner, in 1992; son-in-law, Jake Alt, in 1995; and her brothers, Cecil, Leon, Jack and Warren O'Rourke.

She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Blessed be her memory.

BRITT - Mary E. (Betty) Boothroyd, 78, of Britt, passed away Friday (Jan. 21, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Mary, the daughter of Frederick H. and Mary (Mc Namara) Paranteau, was born May 15, 1921, in Dudley, Mass. In 1942 she graduated from St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing in Worcester, Mass. She accepted a commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force Corp of Nurses and was stationed in Gulfport at Gulfport Air Field, Miss., where she met and married Edwin L. Boothroyd on July 21, 1944. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Britt.

Survivors include her husband, Edwin; two sons, Edwin R. and his wife, Mary Lou, of Britt and James and his wife, Maria, of Mason City; three grandsons, Todd and his wife, Kara, of Clive, Tony and his wife, Mina, of West Des Moines and Toby of Britt; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Virginia and her husband, Edwin Devlin; and one nephew and his wife, all of Dudley, Mass.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, one sister and her twin brother.

GRAFTON - Clyde Allen Glassel, 64, passed away Saturday (Jan. 22, 2000) at his home in rural Grafton.

Clyde Allen Glassel, the son of Louis and Wilma Trettin Glassel, was born March 25, 1935, in rural Plymouth. He moved to Grafton in Dec. 1944 and continued his schooling there. He graduated from high school in 1955 and from Wartburg College in 1959 with a bachelor of arts degree in economics.

He was a full-time farmer in the Grafton/Plymouth area.

On Jan. 22, 1961, he married Lenore Ellen Amelung.

Cherishing his memory is his wife, Lenore, of Grafton; his daughter, Ruth Cole and her husband, Don, of Lake Mills; his son, Fred and his wife, Tina, of Plymouth; his daughter, Kate Oelberg and her husband, Dan, of Maple Grove, Minn.; five grandchildren, Ray and Justin Cole and Heather, Justin and Bobbi Jo Brady; two aunts, Dorothy and Orpha Trettin; and many cousins.

Clyde was preceded in death by his parents.

BUFFALO CENTER - Eddie Brass, 83, died Saturday (Jan. 22, 2000) at his home.

Eddie Brass, son of Amos and Jennie (Fischer) Brass, was born Aug. 5, 1916, at Buffalo Center.

On Jan. 30, 1947, he was united in marriage to Henrietta Meinders at the First Reformed Church, Buffalo Center. This marriage was blessed with two children, Gene and Janet.

At a young age Eddie was baptized and became a member of First Baptist Church in Buffalo Center. He joined the First Reformed Church, Buffalo Center, in 1947 and was an active member until the time of his death. He taught Sunday school for many years and also served terms on the consistory as both an elder and deacon.

Eddie is survived by his wife, Henrietta, of Lakota; his son, Gene and his wife, Marilyn Brass, of Buffalo Center; his daughter, Janet and her husband, James Churchill, of St. Paul, Minn.; six grandchildren, Tara and her husband, Chad Ortman, of Bancroft, Travis Brass of Buffalo Center and Colby, Caleb, Casey and Celsy Churchill of St. Paul, Minn.; two great-grandchildren, Braden and Kaitlin Ortman, of Bancroft; one sister, Jennie Frerichs of Buffalo Center; two sisters-in-law, Clara Brass of Buffalo Center and Lillian Brass of Garner; one brother-in-law, Albert and his wife, Johanna Frerichs, of Titonka; and by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Aeilt, William and Weird; his twin sister, Alice Frerichs; a sister, Minnie Steen; and one brother-in-law, Nanne Frerichs.

Mildred was born Aug. 8, 1907, in Cedar Township, Mitchell County, the daughter of Oliver and Alma (Teslow) Haugen. She attended Osage schools.

Mildred was united in marriage to Dan Hummel on Nov. 18, 1937, in Osage. They lived their entire married life in Osage. Dan died in March 1962.

Mildred was employed at Mitchell County Memorial Hospital for 22 years as a dietary aide.

She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church.

Mildred is survived by a sister-in-law, Lois Haugen, Osage; three nieces, Meri Jo Lonergan and her husband, Bill Jr., Austin, Minn., Coralie Normann and her husband, Arnold, Veroqua, Wis., and Ann Nelson and her husband, Alan, Veroqua, Wis.; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dan; two infant sons; a brother, Gordon Haugen; a sister, Iva Tordoff; and a special friend, Leonard Baldwin.

FERTILE - Doris C. Burtness, 88, of Fertile, died Sunday (Jan. 23, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Doris C. Burtness was born on a farm west of Fertile on March 15, 1911, the daughter of John and Janet (Halverson) Zobel. She received her education in the Ventura and Fertile schools. She married Lester Burtness on Nov. 7, 1931 in Mason City.

Doris was involved in a variety of efforts over the years. She finished driving Lester's school bus route in 1944 when he joined the service, she chandled eggs, hung wallpaper for many people and was a wonderful baker.

She owned and operated two restaurants in Fertile and worked in the lunchroom at the Fertile School.

She was a gifted seamstress and enjoyed knitting, crocheting and doing hand-work, often sharing many mittens, booties and afghans with her family and friends.

She liked to fish and go camping. She loved spending time with her family and was always there for them, a supportive and caring wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Lester Burtness, of Fertile; two daughters, Janice Abrahms and her husband, Spence Jr., of Clear Lake and JoAnn Bailey, of Fertile; two sons and their spouses, Larry and Janet Burtness, of Fertile and Lance and Diane Burtness, of Fertile; a sister, Corrine Miller, of Clear Lake; a sister-in-law, Pat Zobel, of Fertile; 15 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

George A. Lambaere, 89, of St. Ansgar, passed away Sunday (Jan. 23, 2000) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

George was born on April 20, 1910 in Omaha, Neb. to John and Emerence Lambaere. He attended school in Omaha and moved to St. Ansgar to pursue a career in farming.

George married Julia Duponcheele on July 24, 1934. He was very active in his Church, county committees and Spring Valley School Board. George and Julia retired to St. Ansgar in 1985.

He spent many enjoyable hours listening to his favorite ball teams, vacationing with family in Alexandria, Minn., playing cards with his buddies at Chuck's Sportsman's Lounge, talking to his family and friends and fishing for Trout. George will always be remembered as a gentle, good friend.

George will be missed by his wife, Julia; daughters, Mary Lou Kennedy, of Osage, Kathy (Russ) McNitt, of Wyoming, Minn and Joanne (Tom) Wilder, of Mason City; and a son, George (Terri) Lambaere, of Owatonna, Minn. His grandchildren are Steve, John and David Kennedy, Jeff, Mark and Craig McNitt, John, Emily and Matt Lambaere and Chris and Matt Wilder. He has three great-grandchildren, Phillip, Christine and Taylor McNitt.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Emerence; and a brother, Jerome; and a sister, Martha.

DUANE A. BRAMSEN

GAINESVILLE, Mo. - A memorial service for 67-year-old Duane Bramsen, of Gainesville, Mo. was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at Baxter County Funeral Home in Mountain Home, Ark., with Dr. James Hoffpauir officiating. Mr. Bramsen died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at Baxter Regional Medical Center.

He was born Sept. 19, 1932 in Swaledale, Iowa to Clarence and Mable Peters Bramsen. He married Joellen Clabaugh Groves on May 23, 1979 at Mankato, Minn.

He was retired from the U.S. Air Force and was a retired business owner. He operated Bramsen Upholstery in Mason City for many years.

Mr. Bramsen was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and AARP. He was a Protestant.

He is survived by his wife, Joellen Bramsen, of Gainesville; four sons, Butch Bramsen and his wife, Vicki and Bill Bramsen and his wife, Laurie, all of Mason City; Perry Groves and his wife, Kelly, of Tucson, Ariz. and Danny Groves, of Mason City; two daughters, Linda Ellman, of Mason City and Dr. Patricia Newman and her husband, Jeff, of Omaha, Neb.; two sisters, Phylis Lee and her husband, Glenn, of Shelby and Linda Haven and her husband, Byron, of Avon Park, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. Interment was private.

He married Lorraine "Lorrie" Manguson on July 27, 1957 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City.

E.J. graduated from Eagle Grove High School and attended State Junior College in Eagle Grove. He lived in Iowa Falls for five years where he and his brother operated Firestone Tire and Appliance Store. He then moved to Mason City and managed J & L Tire which is now Bauer Built retiring in 1999.

E.J. enjoyed gardening, camping, fishing, golfing and drawing. He loved traveling with his wife and spending winters in Texas and Alabama.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council 1006 of Mason City.

E.J. will be remembered for his Irish wit and humor and his love for people.

Survivors include his wife, Lorrie Hart, of Mason City; three children, Emmett L. Hart and his wife, Susan, of Garner, J. Tim Hart and his wife, Miros, of Spring, Texas and Kathy Brinn and her husband, Mark, of West Chester, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Danielle, John, Andrew, Jared, John, Sabrina and Haley; one sister, Sister Theresa Hart, O.P., of Sinsinawa, Wis.; two brothers, Thomas Hart and his wife, Muriel, of Eagle Grove and Patrick Hart and his wife, Paula, of Adel; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, John, Eugene, Hubert, Joseph and Larry Hart; and one sister, Kay Broadhurst.

EAGLE GROVE - Virgil Gerald Wilson, 75, of Eagle Grove, died Sunday (Jan. 23, 2000) in Eagle Grove.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Willim Funeral Home in Eagle Grove, with a 7 p.m. Masonic service.

LONE ROCK - Tressie Brace, 96, of Lone Rock, formerly of Hayfield, Minn., died Sunday (Jan. 23, 2000) at the Algona Manor.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Presbyterian Church in Lone Rock, with the Rev. Willis Nicholson officiating. Burial will be in the Burt Township Cemetery in Burt.

CHARLES CITY - Jess E. Waddell, 88, of 901 Court St., Charles City and formerly of Floyd, died Saturday (Jan. 22, 2000) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Main and Gilbert Streets, with the Rev. Dennis D. Niezwaag officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, Garner, with a combined rosary by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and Rosary Society at 7 p.m. and a scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m.
