MASON CITY - Dorothy A. Tenney, 89, of Mason City, died Thursday (Dec. 30, 1999) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Christian Church, 318 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. Rick Eichenlaub officiating. Burial will be at Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 3 until 7 p.m. Sunday at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City.

BELMOND - Duane Austin McCurry, 82, of Belmond, died Friday (Dec. 31, 1999) at the Belmond Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 3, at the United Methodist Church in Belmond, with Pastor Celestyne DeVance officiating. Burial will take place in the United Methodist Swiss Cemetery near Renwick.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick Lane S., Belmond, with a 7 p.m. Masonic service. There will be visitation one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

ROBERT COUNSELL
LITTLE CEDAR - Robert Counsell, 66, of Little Cedar, died Thursday (Dec. 30, 1999) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City of natural causes.
Bob was born March 2, 1933, near New Haven, the son of Lloyd Sr. and Harriett (Strong) Counsell. He attended Little Cedar schools and graduated from Little Cedar High School, where he participated in baseball and basketball.
Bob was united in marriage to Alta Julius on July 27, 1952, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Osage. Bob hauled milk for the Little Cedar Creamery for several years. He then was employed at the Little Cedar Grain Elevator, where he became manager until his retirement.
He enjoyed fishing, gardening and his family and friends.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 3, at the Little Cedar United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ted Stowers officiating. Interment will be in the Liberty Cemetery, Little Cedar.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Champion Funeral Home, 702 State St., Osage, and one hour prior to services on Monday at the Church.
Those that survive him include his wife, Alta Counsell, of Little Cedar; three daughters, Debra Conrad and her husband, Dennis, of Little Cedar, Darla Kelly and her husband, Darrell, of Belmond and Donna Hanson and her husband, Raymond, of Little Cedar; five grandchildren, Lonnie Conrad and his wife, Leslie, Christina Noah and her husband, Jeremy, Crystal Jacobs, Michael Hanson and Jason Hanson; one great-granddaughter, MaKayla Noah; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Nicholas and Natasha Duryee; and two brothers, Lloyd Counsell Jr. and Owen Counsell, both of Osage.
Preceding him in death were his parents, a sister, a brother and a son-in-law.

NORTHWOOD - Joyce J. Willand, 60, died Thursday (Dec. 30, 1999) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 3, at First Lutheran Church, Northwood, with the Rev. Al Stoa and the Rev. Paul Holmer officiating. Burial will be at State Line Cemetery, Northwood.

Joyce was born on March 27, 1939, in Worth County, to Orble and Margaret (Neilandt) Godfrey. She was baptized and confirmed at Northwood United Methodist Church.
Joyce married Wayne Willand on Sept. 26, 1959, at the Northwood United Methodist Church.
Joyce was a Sunday school teacher, choir member and on the church council. She was also a 4-H leader, served on the extension council and was a cook at the Northwood Senior Center. Joyce loved going to her grandchildren's sporting events and concerts. She also loved cooking, biking, crafts and collecting beanies.
Joyce is survived by her husband, Wayne, of Northwood; three daughters, Wendy Weisert and her husband, Mike, and children, Brandon, Ryan and Jason, of Northwood, Wynnette Tews and children, Heather, Tyler and Brittany, of Albert Lea, Minn., and Wanda Christensen and her husband, Jim, of Mason City; two sons, Wayde Willand and his wife, Jill, of Owatonna, Minn., and Wendell Willand and special friend, Penny Portis, and children, Alyssa and Erika, of Mason City; mother, Margaret Godfrey, of Northwood; mother-in-law, Ellnora Willand, of Northwood; sister, Arlene Salz and her husband, Jack, of Mason City; brothers-in-law, Warren Willand and his wife, Harriet, of Northwood; and Ward Willand and his wife, Emilie, of Kensett.
Joyce was preceded in death by her father, Orble Godfrey; a brother, Norman; and father-in-law, Walter Willand.

OTTOSEN - Olianna Vinaas, 96, formerly of Ottosen, died Wednesday (Dec. 29, 1999) at the Trinity Regional Hospital, Fort Dodge.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Trinity Lutheran Church at Ottosen, with Pastor Robert Molldrem officiating. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery in Ottosen.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home, Humboldt.
Olianna Lee, the daughter of Osmond and Anna Lee, was born Sept. 18, 1903, in Norway. She was raised and educated there and emigrated to America in 1930, making her home in the Thor area.
She was united in marriage to John Vinaas and they farmed near Ottosen for many years until retiring. They lived in Ottosen. After the death of Mr. Vinaas she continued to maintain her home and live in Mason City near her daughter during the winter months. Mrs. Vinaas was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church at Ottosen. She had recently resided at Friendship Haven, Fort Dodge.
Mrs. Vinaas is survived by her son, Alf Lee, of Fort Dodge; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Inger Rogness, of Humboldt.
She was preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers and sisters, husband, John and daughter, Janice Smeby.

LENORA F. TIENKEN
RICEVILLE - Lenora F. Tienken, 91, of Riceville, died Friday (Dec. 31, 1999) at the Colonial Manor in Elma.
Lenora was born Jan. 28, 1908, in McIntire, to Frank and Pearl (Hockens) Robbins. She attended school in McIntire and was united in marriage to Robert M. Tienken on July 3, 1924, in Cresco. Robert died in 1968.
Together they farmed in the Riceville area for the majority of their life together. Lenora moved to Riceville in 1974 and remained there until she entered the care center in Elma on July 6, 1999.
She is survived by a granddaughter, Karen Tienken, of Elma, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 3, at the Wayne Baptist Church in McIntire, with Gary Gilbert officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Riceville.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Janet Mary Novak, 49, of Fort Collins, Colo., died Tuesday (Dec. 28, 1999) at her home in Fort Collins. Services were held in Fort Collins.
Cremation will take place in Fort Collins, Colo.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society to be used for Breast Cancer Research.
Janet was born Dec. 6, 1950, in Milwaukee, Wis., the daughter of Edward Howell Griffiths and Theresa Mary Gorichanaz. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a bachelor's degree in English. She was a member of Sigma Tau Delta honor society.
She married Gerald F. Novak on Feb. 1, 1975, in West Allis, Wis. She was a former resident of Mason City, St. Louis, Mo., and Milwaukee. She had been a resident of Fort Collins since June of 1997.
She was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, a real estate title examiner, mother and homemaker. Her interests included the Breast Cancer Support Group (on the Internet). She had a strong love for her family and friends and her strong spirit and determination will be sadly missed.
Her survivors include her father, Gerald H. Griffiths, of Minoqua, Wis.; husband, Gerald F. Novak, of Fort Collins, Colo.; daughter, Allison E. Novak, of Fort Collins, Colo.; three brothers, James E. Griffiths, Edward H. Griffiths III, and Jon E. Griffiths, all of Milwaukee; and one sister, Judith Ann Bernhagen, of Cary, N.C.
She was preceded in death by her mother.

OATIS BAILEY JR.
MASON CITY - Oatis Bailey Jr., 73, of 15186 300th St., died Thursday (Dec. 30, 1999) at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.
The family requests memorials be directed to the Oatis Bailey Jr. Memorial Fund.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to service time at the church.
Oatis was born July 17, 1926, in Gary, Ind., the son of Oat Bailey and Hazel Turner. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theatre. He served on the NTS Farragut Idaho and the USS President Hayes.
He married LeVound Quam on May 6, 1947, in Mason City. He worked 43 years at Northwestern States Portland Cement, retiring in 1989. Following his retirement he volunteered and drove the DAV van to various veterans facilities in the state. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, VFW Moose Lodge, and enjoyed fishing, hunting and the outdoors.
Survivors include his wife, LeVound, Mason City; children, Patricia Martin and husband, Robert, of Rockwell, Dennis Bailey and special friend, Donna, of Mason City, and Wallace Bailey and wife, Doreta, of Mason City; two grandchildren, Pamela and Todd Martin; three step grandchildren, Kathy Adams and husband, John, Shelly Brass and Lisa Julsen and husband, David; seven step great grandchildren, Calvin and Benjamin Adams, Jessica Brass, Keisha Hardy, Michael Kennedy, Amanda Kennedy and Zachery Meyers; brothers, Eugene Bailey of North Hollywood, Calif., Roger Bailey and wife, Roberta, of Des Moines, Larry Bailey and wife, Sharon, of Plymouth, Harvey Bailey and special friend, Michelle, Tempe, Ariz., John Bailey and wife, Pat, of Clear Lake, and Spencer Weaver and wife, Sandy, of Mason City; sisters, Margaret Quam and husband, Lyle, of Mason City, Claudia Pederson of Missouri; and many nieces and nephews.

Gerald Best was born Aug. 21, 1949, in Mason City, the son of Laurence and Marilee (Pigman) Best. He attended school in Mason City and would later attend Hawkeye Tech in Waterloo. He served with the 173rd Airborne, U.S. Army, during the Vietnam War. There he received two purple hearts. He enjoyed working with his hands and building things.
Survivors include four children, Jerod Best and wife, Lisa, of Fallon, Nev., Rachel Best of Lake Jackson, Texas, and Philip and Timothy Best, both of Mason City; three grandchildren, Jimmy Dean, Lindy and Magnus; his mother, Marilee Strasser of Mason City; three brothers, Larry Best and his wife, Dawn, of Waterloo, Phil Best and his wife, Kathy, of Mason City, and Robert Best of Burchinal; three sisters, Marcia Best of Mason City, Darlene King and her husband, Mitch, of Mason City, and Cindy Best of Kenai, Ala.

Dorothy was born July 15, 1910, in Mason City, the daughter of Louis and Ellen (Piel) Crepow. She attended school in Mason City, graduating from Mason City High School in 1928. She worked as a telephone operator n Mason City for several years after graduation.
She was first united in marriage to Noel Neely and they were later divorced. She then united in marriage to Francis Tenney on Oct. 6, 1935, in Charles City. She worked at Merkel's Department Store in Mason City for several years and later worked for many years in the kitchen at Mercy Hospital. She loved going out to eat with friends in her spare time. She was a lifelong member of First Christian Church and also a member of the Milwaukee Women's Club.
Survivors include her son, Eugene Neely and his wife, Joanne, of Fresno, Calif.; three stepchildren, Bill Tenney and his wife, Idelle, Mason City, Shirley Donahue of Albert Lea, Minn., and Barbara Graves and her friend, John Haller, Mason City; one step-son-in-law, Carol Severtson of Glenville, Minn.; 26 grandchildren; 63 great grandchildren; eight great great grandchildren; one sister, Evelyn Kephart of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Francis; one stepdaughter, Patricia Severtson; two grandchildren, Donna Hanig and Dan Severtson; one great grandson, Adam Hanig; three sisters and one brother.

MASON CITY -Frank Lewis, 88, of Mason City, died Thursday (Dec. 30, 1999) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.
A funeral Mass will be held at noon on Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael Schueller officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6:30 p.m. today at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., where a rosary will be said at 6:45 p.m. followed by a scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m.
Frank Lewis was born March 1, 1911, in Longview, Ill., the son of Grover and Agnes (Callahan) Lewis.
He was united in marriage to Mary Barragy on May 28, 1935, in Rockwell. He lived and worked on the same farm for more than 60 years near Mason City. He was also a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Betty Vader, of Minneapolis, Minn.; one son, Terrence Lewis and his wife, Lynette, Mason City; five grandchildren, Steven Vader and his wife, Jessica, Minneapolis, Mary Ellen Balwierczak and her husband, Joe, of New Jersey, Shari Rottinghaus and her husband, Joe, of Mason City, Jill Rowe and her husband, Paul, of Sheffield and Randy Lewis of Mason City; 10 great grandchildren; six sisters, Anne Kaplan of Rogers, Texas, Nora McKee of San Francisco, Calif., Marie Raney and Agnes Lewis, both of Mason City, Elizabeth Washburn and her husband, Bob, of Peoria, Ill., and Gertrude Stoltenberg and her husband, Richard, Mason City; one brother, John Lewis and his wife, Sally, of Dubuque; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Lewis of Mason City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

MASON CITY - Violet M. Bernemann, 90, of Mason City, died Friday (Dec. 31, 1999) at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center.
A funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday at noon at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with the Rev. Carl A. Ries officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., where a rosary prayer service will be held at 7 p.m.

Violet Bernemann was born Aug. 16, 1909, in Mason City, the daughter of Joseph and Jennie (Brown) Balek. She grew up in Mason City, attending St. Joseph School.
She was united in marriage to Delbert Bernemann in 1935 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. She worked at a neighborhood grocery store, Woolworths, as a sales associate for 33 years and in the office at JC Penny, retiring in 1969. She was active in her family and enjoyed traveling to visit them. She resided at Shalom Tower II for 11 years before entering Good Shepherd Center in April 1993. She was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Survivors include her son, Richard Bernemann and his wife, Myrna, of Mason City; two grandchildren, Cynthia Rieke and her husband, Mark, and their two children, Amy and Peter, all of Fairfax, Minn., and David Bernemann and his wife, Laura, and their three children, Amanda, Alex and Carolyn, all of Mason City; one sister, Betty Wellington of Marina Valley, Calif.; four brothers, Joseph Balek of Mason City, Walter Balek and his wife, Cathryn, of Edina, Minn., James Balek and his wife, Vivian, and Robert Balek, all of Mason City; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Delbert in 1939; one brother, Leonard Balek; four sisters, Anna Hoselton, Carrie Riley, Lillian Wade-Wellington and Helen Buffington.

NORA SPRINGS - Mary Emma Waters, 100, of Nora Springs, died Friday (Dec. 31, 1999) at the Nora Springs Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Christian Church in Nora Springs, with the Rev. Paul Boostrom officiating. Burial will be in Rock Grove Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 12:30 Monday until service time at the church. Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye, Nora Springs, is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Waters was born Feb. 13, 1899, in Pine Island, Minn., the daughter of Herman and Lena (Bratzke) Stiller.
She was united in marriage to Frank Waters on Aug. 5, 1915, in Luck, Wis. They moved to the Nora Springs area shortly thereafter to farm, which they did until retirement in 1966. She was a lifelong homemaker who enjoyed her family and babysitting her grandchildren. She took care of a large garden of flowers and plants and canned her own fruits and vegetables. She was especially known for her baking skills, including donuts, bread and noodles. She was a member of the Christian Church in Nora Springs for more than 75 years, one of their oldest members. She has lived the past several years at the Nora Springs Care Center, where she always looked forward to her birthday parties with family and friends.
She is survived by two sons, Junior Waters and his wife, Lorrie, of Plymouth, and Charlie Waters and his wife, Ruth, of Nora Springs; one daughter, Cora Hibner and her husband, Jim, of Ames; one daughter-in-law, Gladys Waters of Rockford; one sister-in-law, Esther Stiller of Nora Springs; 16 grandchildren; and many great grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, Clayton and Richard Waters; one brother, August (Bob) Stiller; two sisters, Myrtle Hanson and Elma McNeir; two daughter-in-law, Donna Waters and Mary Elizabeth Waters; one granddaughter, Shari Hibner; and two great grandsons, Travis Waters and an infant boy.

BELMOND - Duane Austin McCurry, 82, of Belmond, died Friday (Dec. 31, 1999) at the Belmond Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church, Belmond, with the Rev. Celestyne DeVance officiating. Burial will be in United Methodist Swiss Cemetery, Renwick.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond, and one hour prior to services at the church. Masonic services will be held at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Duane McCurry was born Dec. 5, 1917, on a farm homesteaded by his grandfather in Liberty Township in Goldfield, the son of James Howard and Grace Geraldine Packard McCurry. He was baptized in the Evangelical Church in Renwick, where he was an active member for many years. He attended Liberty Township country school and Renwick High School, graduating in 1936.
He was united in marriage to Ruth A. Figi on May 4, 1940, in Renwick. The couple made their home on a farm south of Renwick. He farmed his entire life. After retiring in 1980, the couple moved to Belmond, where they have since resided. He was a member of the Belmond United Methodist Church, a 50-year member and past master of the Viona Masonic Lodge 538. He was a good husband and father, enjoyed his home, his family and camping with his grandchildren. The couple spent several winters in Texas and enjoyed "trailering."
Survivors include his wife, Ruth; three children, Dennis Duane and his wife, Elaine of Renwick, David Paul and his wife, Mary Jo, of Marshalltown and Mary Ellen Eekhoff and her husband, Ronald, of Renwick; nine grandchildren, Angela and her husband, Randy Loomis, Blaine McCurry and his wife, Lori, Jill and her husband, Brad Reichter, Jennifer and her husband, Tom Hilton, Kristen McCurry, Theresa and her husband, Jack Blong, Paula and her husband, Tony Kubly, Crystal and her husband, Corey Nelson and Sue Ann Eekhoff; 11 great grandchildren; two sisters and one brother, Miriam Mahood of Vinton, William McCurry and his wife, Bea, of Humboldt, and Wilma Tatone of Bloomington, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; great granddaughter, Megan Marie Loomis; and brother, Don McCurry.

THELMA DUESENBERG
CLEAR LAKE - Thelma M. (Bump) Duesenberg, 94, a former Clear Lake resident, died Nov. 9 (1999) in Mesa, Ariz., following a brief illness.
Thelma was born in Grinnell in 1905. She attended Drake University where she was a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority and several honorary fraternities. After graduation in 1930, she taught and served as high school principal in Truro, Iowa.
In 1934, she married Warren Henry Duesenberg and they made their home in Clear Lake for many years. Warren died in 1996. Thelma was active in the Parent Teachers Association and Girl Scouts leadership, was an Iowa delegate to the Republican National Convention and served as national parliamentarian during her four-decade involvement with T.T.T.
Thelma and Warren retired to Arizona in 1968, spending winters in Mesa and summers at Pine Top and Show Low. In retirement, she enjoyed bridge, golf, bowling and painting.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Shyrl Duesenberg; a daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Bruce Long; five grandchildren, Darcy Duesenberg, Troy Duesenberg, Nancy (Long) Spivey, Brian Long and Cindy Long; and four great grandchildren.

Camilla R. Sampson was born on Aug. 10, 1913, in Mikkelson, Mich., the daughter of Glenn and Agnes C. (Sorenson) Robinson. She received her education in Michigan.
She was united in marriage to Robert Jacks. She was then united in marriage to Doyle Sampson. He preceded her in death. During her life she resided in the Franklin and Sleepy Eye, Minn., area for over 40 years where she was a cook for various restaurants until her retirement before moving to Northwood. She enjoyed gardening, canning, crocheting and quilting.
Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Margaret Coe, and her husband, Dick, of Mason City; a son, Larry Lee Jacks and his wife, Jeanette, of Eaton, Colo.; six grandchildren, James and Dale Coe and Mike, Doug, Becky and Brad Jacks; nine great-grandchildren, Kris, Kortnie, Don, Josh, Amanda, Jeremy, Megan and Janelle Jacks and Amber Coe; one brother, Glenn Robinson Jr. and his wife, Ellie, of Wyoming, Mich.; two sisters, Barbara Archie and her husband, Carl, of Mt. Edna L. (Tudy) Saunders was born July 29, 1920, in Round Lake, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Carrie Slocum. She married Bill Rease in 1938. They owned and operated the Country House Restaurant in Mason City. Bill died on June 24, 1965.
She then married Herb Saunders on Aug. 19, 1968. She enjoyed playing cards, golfing and traveling. She loved spending time with her family and friends. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband, Herb Saunders, Mason City; three daughters, Donna Ransom and her husband, Bob, of Mason City, Betty Thornblade and her husband, Ron, Des Moines, and Barb Saunders and her husband, Rob, of Perth, Australia; six grandchildren, Tammy Davies and her husband, Scott, Mason City, Todd Ransom and his wife, Sharon, Mason City, Laurie Holck, Des Moines, Missy Cortesio and her husband, Gene, Davenport, and John and Jeremy Rogers, of Arkansas; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mae Oswald, Clear Lake, and Alyce Jenkins, Sacramento, Calif.; a twin brother, Bud Slocum, Sacramento, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

MASON CITY - Gordon Noble, 74, of 812 12th St. S.E., died Monday (Jan. 3, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with Lt. Jon Augestein of the Salvation Army officiating. Military honors will be conducted at the funeral home by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.
Following the services, his body will be cremated. A family burial service will be held later at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and will continue until service time on Thursday.
Gordon Noble was born March 12, 1925, in Wisconsin, the son of Rodney and Viola (Elger) Noble. He served in World War II. Following the war, he returned to graduate from high school. He then worked for Ruan Trucking, where he met his wife of 52 and a half years. On May 23, 1947, he married Evelyn Marson.
He attended refrigeration school in Omaha, Neb., where his daughter, Linda (Noble) Warden, was born. He worked for James Equipment for more than 25 years, retiring in 1990. He worked after retirement for Dealer Motors. He was a member of the Salvation Army, Men's Club, the River City CB Club, the Eagles Lodge, the American Legion, MIW and Cedar Rock CB Clubs.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Noble, Mason City; his daughter, Linda Warden and her husband, Dennis, of Mason City; two grandchildren, John Brass and his wife, Kathy, Mason City, and Tracy Hoveland and her husband, Bob, of Mason City; five great-grandchildren, Jessica, Ashley and Nathan Brass and Jordan and Emily Hoveland; two stepgrandchildren, Kyle Warden of Tama, and Jennifer Warden of Union; five stepgrandchildren; 10 stepgreat grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Harper of Midway, Ark., a sister-in-law, Alice Funte, of Charles City, two brothers-in-law, Lyle Marson and his wife, Charlene, and Don Marson and his wife, Betty; and several nieces and nephews.

OSAGE - Jayne Heise, 54, of Osage, died Monday (Jan. 3, 2000) at her home.
Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Osage, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Burial will be in the Keystone Cemetery, Keystone.

Jayne Heise was born Aug. 29, 1945, in Vinton, the daughter of Wayne and Evelyn (Kirkman) Ohde. She graduated from Van Horne High School in 1963, and was a member of its state championship basketball team. In 1967, she graduated from Upper Iowa University of Fayette.
She married out of college and started her teaching career in Omaha, Neb. She raised her children while living in Seattle, Wash., and Iowa City, moving to Osage in 1977.
She returned to elementary teaching in 1987. She helped develop the Talented and Gifted Program at Osage Community Schools, and had taught kindergarten since 1994. She was active in the development of three women's adult softball leagues and the children's T-ball leagues of Osage. She also dedicated a lot of her time to attending her children's athletic events. She was an active member of the Osage Booster Club and was statistician for the Osage High School girls volleyball team. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa teachers sorority.
She will be remembered as the most nurturing and cohesive element of her family. She will be greatly missed, and remembered often. Comfort lies in her memory, and her spirit, which will be with us always.

BRITT - Dorothy Catharine Matern, 85, of Britt, died Sunday (Jan. 2, 2000) at her home.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Britt, with the Rev. Marvin Bries officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Wesley.

Dorothy Catharine Matern was born March 18, 1914, in Williamsburg, the daughter of Thomas and Regina (Gallaghar) Shannahan. She attended school in Ottumwa and graduated from Ottumwa Heights at the age of 16. She then went on to college at the University of Iowa, graduating in 1934. She taught school in the Wesley and LeMars area until World War II. During the war, she was employed with the Civil Service in Niagara Falls and later in Ohio.
Following the war, she moved to Cheyenne, Wyo., where she was united in marriage to Frank H. Matern on April 24, 1946, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. The couple made their home in Cheyenne and later moved to Aberdeen, S.D.
The family moved to the Britt area in 1954, where they were engaged in farming. She obtained her library science degree in 1968 and was the librarian at Britt High School until 1978. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Britt, and the Rosary Society, and served on various committees at the church. She was the first director of St. Patrick's Religion Program. She also enjoyed her work with the Hancock County Little Theater.
Survivors include her five children, Melinda West of Ventura, Michael of Britt, Marcia and her husband, Darrel Courrier, of Minneapolis, Mark and his wife, Joyce, of Britt, and Mary and her husband, Forrest Klippenstein, of Oral, S.D.; 10 grandchildren; one brother, Joe Shannahan and his wife, Katie, of Williamsburg; and two sisters-in-law, Ruth Shannahan of Williamsburg and Dorothy Jean Shannanhan of Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Frank, two brothers and two sisters.

MANLY - Judy Ann Hackbart, 53, of 220 West Spring St., Manly, died Saturday (January 1, 2000) at St. Mary s Hospital, Rochester, Minn., as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Dec. 19.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Bethel United Methodist Church, 503 East South St., Manly, with the Rev. Robert M. Cumings officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Judy Ann was born July 5, 1946, in Mason City, the daughter of Louis J. and Isabella E. (Seifert) Duda. She attended Mason City schools, graduating from Mason City High School in 1964. In 1971, she graduated from the nursing program at NIACC as a registered nurse.
On May 6, 1972, at Grace Baptist Church in Mason City, she was united in marriage to Frederick James Hackbart. The couple made their home briefly in Mason City before moving to Manly, where they had lived for the past 26 years. Judy Ann will be sadly missed by their many friends and neighbors of the Manly area.
Judy Ann worked as a nurses aide and surgical technician at St. Josephs Mercy Hospital in Mason City. She then became a nurse in the office of the Independent Medical Surgical Group. In 1984, she took the position of director of nursing at the Manly Care Center. In 1987, she began working as a Worth County public health nurse. The people whose lives she touched throughout her professional life will not forget her. Her service, kindness and love will be remembered forever.
Judy Ann was an avid golfer and bowler. She loved to play bingo, visit Branson, Mo., travel and go on fishing trips with her family and friends. She was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly, the Highland Park Golf Club and the Monday Night Women's Classic at the Rose Bowl in Mason City. To assist the victims of Hurricane Andrew, she spent two months in Florida as a volunteer with a doctors group. Most of All, she loved spending time with family and friends. Every weekend and every holiday, every ball game and hockey game was a reason to celebrate the life and love of her family and friends.

MASON CITY - Julia (Nyhus) Jensen, 89, San Diego, Calif., formerly of Mason City, died Wednesday (Dec. 22, 1999) in San Diego.

WILLIE F. BARTIK
BRITT - Willie F. Bartik, 87, of Britt, died Monday (Jan. 3, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Britt, with the Rev. Marvin Bries officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Britt, with graveside military rites conducted by the Britt Veterans Ceremonial Unit.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Cataldo Funeral Home, 178 First Ave. S.W., Britt, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.
Willie Frank Bartik was born Oct. 12, 1912, in Britt, the son of Antonin and Vozena (Kaiser) Bartik. He graduated from Britt High School in 1932 and Britt Junior College in 1934. He was a part of the Civilian Conservation Corps for a short time.
On Aug. 1, 1934, he married Leona Fern Arnaman of Centerville at Unionville, Mo. They made their home in Britt. He served his country during World War II as a sergeant in the Fourth Marine Air Wing Division and was stationed in the Marshall Islands and Guam. After the service, he continued his business as a building contractor in Britt until 1955. He then became a construction superintendent until his retirement in 1977. His hobbies included making clocks, gardening and caring for his three cats. He enjoyed his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of the International Bricklayers Union.
Survivors include his wife, Fern Bartik, of Britt; two daughters, Janice Sharp and her husband, Larry, of West Des Moines, and Francine Ryerson and her husband, Jerome, of Forest City; four grandchildren, Brad Sharp, Stan Sharp, Jay Ryerson and Aaron Ryerson; two great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons; a brother, Ernest Bartik and his wife, Marge, of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Bartik of Britt and Minnie Loo Bartik of Collins; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a twin brother, Arthur Bartik, a brother, Anthony Bartik, and his stepmother, Anna Bartik.

AUSTIN, Minn. - Dr. A. Jefferson Lee, 76, of Austin, Minn., died Tuesday (Jan. 4, 2000) in Austin.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Austin with the Rev. Paul Nelson officiating.
There will be a scriptural wake service at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Mayer Funeral Home, 600 Second St. N.W., Austin. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday and from 9 until 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
A. Jefferson Lee was born Nov. 26, 1923, in Albert Lea, the son of Jefferson O. and Marie (Meyer) Lee.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Kay, of Austin; two sons, Dr. Kevin Lee of Oregon and Dr. Terrance Lee of Ashville and Chapel Hill, N.C.; two daughters, Maureen Lee of Austin and Dr. Sharon Sheriden, of Minneapolis; three sisters, Mrs. R. Lyle Bergo, Mason City, Mrs. Richard Murphy of Austin, Minn., and Mrs. Ed Hill of Locust Grove, Va.; and one brother, Dr. Douglas D. Lee, of North Carolina.

MILDRED OLIVE (GINTHER) GROSS
ROCKFORD - Mildred Olive (Ginther) Gross, 97, died Tuesday (Jan. 4, 2000) at the Nora Springs Care Center.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Fullerton Schumburg Funeral Home, 302 West Main St., Rockford, with the Rev. Rosemary Rohde-Frank officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

NICOLE JILL JEPSEN
AMES - Nicole Jill Jepsen, 23, of 1400 Coconino Road, Ames, died Monday (Jan. 3, 2000) in Dallas Center of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Andrews Lutheran Church, Ames. Burial will be in Salem Lutheran Church Cemetery, Spragueville.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stevens Memorial Chapel, 607 28th St., Ames.
Nicole Jill Jepsen was born April 1, 1976, in Story City, the daughter of Thomas and Jill (Schroeder) Jepsen. She was a member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church, where she taught fourth-grade Sunday school, served on the parish council and was co-chairperson of Christian education. She also was chairperson of Iowa State College Republicans, a member of Story County Republicans, a Big Sister at the "Y" in Ames and was the clerk for state Rep. Joseph Kremer.
She had lived in Mason City until four years ago, at which time she moved to Ames. She taught fourth grade at Dallas Center, Grimes Schools.
Survivors include her parents, Thomas and Jill Jepsen, Oskaloosa; one sister, Tricia (Doug) Chervek of Mason City; a niece, Emma Chervek of Mason City; a special friend, Mark Alberico of West Des Moines; paternal grandparents, Erwin and Jane Jepsen of Preston; maternal grandparents, Hobart and Joan Schroeder of Preston; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her great-grandparents and one uncle.
