HAMPTON - Lyle "Skinny" Patton, 92, of Hampton, died Sunday (Jan. 9, 2000) at Franklin General Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Hampton, with the Rev. Gerald Condon officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. today at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, with a 7 p.m. scripture service.

PAULINE MAY ESPINOSA

MASON CITY - Pauline May Espinosa, 74, of Mason City, died Sunday (Jan. 9, 2000) at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. Carl A. Ries, of St. Joseph Catholic Church, officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel and will continue prior to services on Wednesday.

Pauline May Espinosa was born May 24, 1925 in Chickasaw County, daughter of LeRoy and Florence (Rance) Linderman. She was married to John Hall. He preceded her in death in February of 1973. She then married John Espinosa.

Pauline grew up in the Charles City area. She loved spending time with her family, especially with her grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling, dancing and sewing.

Survivors include eight children, Francis McMan, of Mason City, Johnny Hall, of Elmwood, Dorothy Theilen, of Nora Springs, James Hall, of Clear Lake, Thomas Hall, of Rockford, Charlotte Espinosa-Lichman, of Nora Springs, Michael Espinosa, of Rockford and Toni Espinosa, of Kansas City, Mo.; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; eight brothers and sisters, LeRoy Linderman, of LeRoy, Minn., Dale Linderman, of Mason City, Bobby Linderman, of Mason City, Ronnie Linderman, of Charles City, Francis Rance, of Rudd, Darrell Rance, of Mason City, Alice Paulsen, of Mason City and Lucille Crumm, of Mason City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; three children, Shirley, Raymond and Bobby; two grandchildren, Mary Belle McMan and Annie Oakley Hall; one great-grandson, Dominic McMan; and one sister, Dorothy Linderman.

MARGARET HONKEN

BUFFALO CENTER - Margaret Honken, 92, of Buffalo Center, died Sunday (Jan. 9, 2000) at Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Congregational Church in Buffalo Center with Pastor David Langer officiating. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Buffalo Center.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Winter Funeral Home in Buffalo Center.

Margaret Helen Honken was born Dec. 5, 1907 near German Valley, to John and Grace (Dorenbush) Smith. She graduated from Buffalo Center High School and normal training to become a teacher in the rural schools.

Margaret was united in marriage to Harry Honken on May 23, 1928 at the Little Brown Church. They were married 67 years.

Margaret and Harry enjoyed sports, fishing and traveling. She was very active in the First Congregational Church and now at home with her Savior.

Margaret became a resident of the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center in 1998. She passed away there on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000 at the age of 92.

Margaret is survived by her son, Gary and his wife, Francile, of Lakeville, Minn.; two grandsons, Paul and his wife, Susan and Tom and his wife, Lenna; one granddaughter, Holly Honken; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bill Smith and his wife, Elsie, of Buffalo Center and John Smith and his wife, Hermina, of Mason City; one sister, Dorothy Heitland and her husband, Al, of Buffalo Center; and by many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and by her husband, Harry, in 1995.

DUANE R. FRANCIS

MASON CITY - Duane R. Francis, 42, of 30 1/2 Second St. N.E., formerly of Rockwell, died Sunday (Jan. 9, 2000) at his home.

Funeral services for Duane Francis will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 120 S. Third St., Rockwell, with Father Leo Riley, pastor, of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Rockwell, officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Visitation with the Family present will be from 4 p.m. until time of services on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Duane Richard Francis was born Oct. 20, 1957 in Mason City, the son of George Woodrow and Delores Lorraine (Kollasch) Francis. He attended school at Sacred Heart School in Rockwell and Newman Catholic High School in Mason City.

While in high school, Duane was a respected athlete participating in track, baseball, football and basketball.

On March 14, 1989, he was united in marriage to Doris Arlene Armstrong.

Duane expressed his artistic ability through his painting. He found great satisfaction in reading. Duane was admired for his good sense of humor, as he often had lots of stories to share.

Those thankful for sharing Duane's life are his wife, Doris, of Mason City; his mother, Delores Francis, of Rockwell; eight brothers and sisters, Dan Francis and his wife, Marcia, of Arvada, Colo., Susan True and her husband, Dick, of Mason City, Denise Luecht, of Garland, Texas, Patricia Francis, of Burlingame, Calif., Dennis Francis, of Mason City, Michael Francis and his wife, Sheryl, of Mason City, Karen Hogen and her husband, John, of Mason City and Matthew Francis and his wife, Chris, of Hudson, Wis.; 24 nieces and nephews, many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends, and especially his cat, Jack-Sam.

He was preceded in death by his father, his grandparents, a brother in infancy and a niece in infancy.

SIENNA BERNIECE GISH

MASON CITY - A precious and loving sweet lady has passed from us, but left us with rich memories that will endure.

Sienna Berniece (Mantz) Gish, 89, died Sunday (Jan. 9, 2000) at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center in Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Father Cahill officiating. A private burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Rockwell.

Memorials may be directed to the Sienna Gish Memorial Fund.

Sienna Gish was born at Swaledale in 1910, the daughter of George and Anna (Martin) Mantz. She graduated from Swaledale High School in 1928. She attended business college in Des Moines and graduated from Sioux City Nursing School.

She was married to John Gish in 1939. She worked at Champlin Refining Company in Mason City before working as a nurse at Park Hospital. She was a Pediatric Head Nurse at Mercy Hospital until she retired in 1975.

Following her retirement, she resided in Mason City. She enjoyed traveling, reading, bingo and reunions with her family. She was a faithful member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

Those who will miss Sienna and cherish her memory include her two sisters, Anna "Marie" Mantz, of Mason City and Margaret "Irene" Tracy, of Janesville, Wis.; five children, George Gish, of Las Vegas, Nev., Dorothy Nisbet, of Houston, Texas, Marcy Nicastro, of Tunkhannock, Pa., David Gish, of Medford, Ore. and Catherine Turnbull, of Mason City; eight grandchildren, Jeff and Matt Nicastro, Jennifer Nisbet, John and Panje Gish, Jamie Sinclair, (formerly of Mason City) and Tim and Windy Gish; and one great-grandchild, Jackson Nicastro; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two sisters, Catherine Robertson and Helen Meyer.

IOWA FALLS - Verle A. Thompson, 85, of Iowa Falls, died Saturday (Jan. 8, 2000) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Immanual Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls, with the Rev. Kenneth Krueger officiating. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery in Iowa Falls.

Verle A. Thompson was born Nov. 25, 1914 in Blue Earth, Minn., to Samuel and Ida (Olson) Thompson.

He was united in marriage to Gladys Hufmann on Oct. 7, 1939 in Iowa Falls.

He owned his own farm 6 miles west of Ackley.

He was a member of the Mason City Senior Citizens. He helped all of the neighboring farmers.

Verle is survived by three sisters, Ione (Mrs. Lawrence) Eide, of Alden, Ruby (Mrs. Charles) Price, of Iowa Falls and Fern (Mrs. Morton) Cross, of Iowa Falls.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife and one brother, Archie.

STEVEN CHARLES ALLEN

O'FALLON, Mo. - Steven Charles Allen, 42, of O'Fallon, died Friday (Jan. 7, 2000) at his home.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Jan. 10, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Dardenne, Mo. Interment was in Our Lady Cemetery at Freymeth and Orf Roads in Dardenne, Mo.

Visitation was held on Sunday, Jan. 9, at the Baue Funeral Home, 311 Wood St. in O'Fallon, Mo.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of Baue Funeral Home.

Steven Charles Allen was born Sept. 2, 1957 in Mason City, Iowa to Lloyd A. and LaVonne C. Allen. He was united in marriage to Kimberly Saathoff on Sept. 25, 1982.

Steven was a loan officer at the Norwest Mortgage Company for the last year in St. Peters, Mo.

He is survived by his wife, Kimberly Allen, of O'Fallon, Mo.; his mother, LaVonne C. Allen, of Clarion; two daughters, Ashley and Amber Allen; a brother, Bill Allen, of Bremerton, Wash.; and a grandmother, Carol Springer, of Charles City.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd A. Allen.

GARY G. EPPENS

MASON CITY - Gary G. Eppens, 60, of 109 S. Ohio Ave., died Sunday (Jan. 9, 2000) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the Church.

Memorials may be given to the Gary G. Eppens Memorial Fund.

Gary was born May 10, 1939 in Mason City, the son of Gerald J. and Beulah M. (Bailey) Eppens. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1958.

Gary worked for Piggly Wiggly for 10 years working at all three of their locations in Mason City. He was married to Karen Edgar on June 5, 1960 at the EUBE Church in Manly.

Gary worked for Consolidated Foods also for 10 years, and for the Mason City School system for 27 years. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing and hunting as well as spending time with his family and grandchildren.

He was a member of the Teamsters Union.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Eppens, of Mason City; daughters, Amy J. Laudner, of Rockford and Deborah Cappello and her husband, Tom, of Framingham, Mass.; one son, Michael Eppens and his wife, CarolAnn, of Mason City; grandchildren, Zachary and Alexander Laudner, of Rockford and Allison and Angela Eppens, of Mason City; his mother, Beulah M. Eppens, of Mason City; brothers, Richard Eppens and his wife, Barbara, of Mason City and Danny Eppens, of Mason City; a sister, Glenda Johnson and her husband, James, of Britt; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gerald in 1990; and two sons, Scott and Douglas in 1965.

MASON CITY - Evette E. Paulson, 77, of 947 15th St. N.E., Mason City, died Jan. 2, 2000, at the Rockwell Community Care Center in Rockwell.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. David Anderson of the St. James Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will be in the Elmwood Columbarium.

Evette was born May 17, 1922, in Fairmont, Minn., the daughter of Ray and Mathilda (Ninz) Cottew. Evette moved to Mason City in the 1940s.

She married Orville Paulson on Dec. 31, 1971, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Evette owned and operated a ceramics shop from her home, Touch of Eve, for several years, where she won numerous awards for her ceramics.

Evette is survived by a sister and sister-in-law and special friend and her family, Juanita and Ron Ohotto and their two children, Ron Jr. and Mike.

Evette was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Clarence.

IVA ALICE FINCH GORDON

BELLE PLAINE - Iva Alice Finch Gordon, 80, of Belle Plaine and formerly of Carpenter, died Monday (Jan. 10, 2000) at the Belle Plaine Nursing & Rehab Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Deer Creek Lutheran Church in Carpenter with Pastor Kathy Larson officiating. Burial will be in the Deer Creek Lutheran Cemetery in Carpenter.

Visitation will begin after 4 p.m. today at the Hrabak Funeral Home in Belle Plaine and after noon on Thursday at the Church in Carpenter.

A memorial fund has been established.

Iva Alice Finch was born Oct. 16, 1914, in Worth County to Frank Melvin and Alice (Pike) Finch. She received her education from the Otranto High School in Otranto.

She was united in marriage to Archie S. Gordon on Sept. 24, 1932. He preceded her in death on March 25, 1967. She was a homemaker and a childcare worker at Bremwood Children's home in Waverly. She had moved to Belle Plaine in 1991.

She was very active in church and school organizations. She was a Lutheran League advisor and a 4-H leader.

She is survived by her children, Charles Gordon of Belle Plaine, Janice Walter of Ames and Shirley Shetka of Schaumburg, Ill.; a brother, Earl Finch of Cambridge, Minn.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Elna DeMaris and Florence Shoemaker; one brother, Russell Finch; and a granddaughter, Teri Shetka Koestner.

INEZ K. BROWNELL

HOUSTON, Texas - Inez K. Brownell, 102, passed away Sunday (Jan. 9, 2000) in Houston.

Memorial services will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, at the Bellaire United Methodist Church in Bellaire, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sanctuary Choir at Bellaire United Methodist Church.

She married John Raymond Brownell in June 1931 in Nashua, Iowa, at The Little Brown Church in the Vail, and was a teacher for 32 years, most of it in Mason City where she taught kindergarten. She moved to Houston in 1987 where she lived out the rest of her life.

She is survived by her daughters, Vesta Brownell and Karen Brownell Wills; grandchildren, David McCullough and his wife, Jana, and Paul McCullough and his wife, Anna, and other loving relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Raymond Brownell; sons-in-law, Richard McCullough and William "Bill" Wills; granddaughter, Elizabeth Wills; and grandson, John Wills.

LEROY WILSON

MASON CITY - LeRoy Wilson, 58, of 1712 So. Virginia Ave., died Monday (Jan. 10, 2000) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N. E., with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon until time of services on Thursday at the Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel.

LeRoy was born Aug. 27, 1941, in Charles City, the son of Jasper LeRoy and Linnie Mae (Gallup) Wilson. He was united in marriage to Connie Samson on July 24, 1967, in Council Bluffs. They lived in Mason City until moving to Chandler, Ariz., in 1973. They returned to Mason City in March 1998. LeRoy worked as a custodian at the Mason City High School since returning to the area. He enjoyed watching sports and woodworking.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Connie, of Mason City; his daughter, Constance Hall, of Mesa, Ariz.; his son, Tim Wilson, stationed in Italy with the United States Navy; eight grandchildren, Michael, David, Brandy, Nicholas, Alicia, Katie, Nathan and Alyssa; one great-grandson, Alex; four brothers, Chuck Wilson and his wife, Betty, of Nora Springs, Larry Wilson and his wife, Mary, of Grain Valley, Mo. and Paul Wilson and his wife, Sharon, of Crescent; two sisters, Marilyn Ingersoll of Mason City and Janice Sheldon of Clear Lake; his father-in-law, Fred Samson of Mason City; his mother-in-law, Audrey Hart and her husband, Charles, of Swaledale; his brother-in-law, John Samson and his wife, Jean, of Monroe; two sisters-in-law, Nancy Schippers and her husband, Larry, of Pella and Phyllis King and her husband, Tom, of Dows; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.

DARLENE KLINE

MASON CITY - Darlene Kline, 57, of Mason City, passed into Heaven on Jan. 10, 2000, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit after losing her battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Kermit Roisen officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel.

Memorials may be made to the Darlene Kline Memorial Fund.

Darlene was born on March 18, 1942, the daughter of Willis and Lila (Harrington) Nichols Sr.

Darlene received her education in the Clear Lake School systems. She married Lyle Kline Sr. on Jan. 14, 1984, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Darlene enjoyed going fishing with her family. She loved watching deer and wildlife. She enjoyed her grandchildren and spent a lot of time reading about angels. She was the manager of the Swan Motel in Clear Lake in the late '80s, also the Village Chateau in Forest City and the Ashley Inn in Mason City.

Darlene is survived by her husband, Lyle Sr.; two sons, Scott and Jaime Hakes, of Clear Lake; one daughter, Jennifer Anderson Allen, of Rockford; three stepsons, Lyle Jr., Richard and Dennis Kline; eight grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Gordon Nichols and his wife, Ruth, of Clear Lake and John Nichols and his wife, Karen, of Clear Lake; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Nichols, of Clear Lake; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; one sister, Doris Nichols; two brothers, Charles and Willis "Bill" Nichols Jr.; one sister-in-law, Shirley; and an infant son, Steven Hakes.

MASON CITY - LeRoy Wilson, 58, of 1712 S. Virginia Ave., died Monday (Jan. 10, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N. E., with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from noon until time of services today at the funeral home.

LeRoy was born Aug. 27, 1941, in Charles City, the son of Jasper LeRoy and Linnie Mae (Gallup) Wilson. He was united in marriage to Connie Samson on July 24, 1967, in Council Bluffs. They lived in Mason City until moving to Chandler, Ariz., in 1973. They returned to Mason City in March of 1998. LeRoy had worked as a custodian at Mason City High School since returning to the area. He enjoyed watching sports and woodworking.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Connie, of Mason City; his daughter, Constance Hall, of Mesa, Ariz.; his son, Tim Wilson, stationed in Italy with the U.S. Navy; eight grandchildren, Michael, David, Brandy, Nicholas, Alicia, Katie, Nathan and Alyssa; one great-grandson, Alex; four brothers, Chuck Wilson and his wife, Betty, of Nora Springs, Larry Wilson and his wife, Norma, of Jerome, Idaho, Don Wilson and his wife, Mary, of Grain Valley, Mo., and Paul Wilson and his wife, Sharon, of Crescent; two sisters, Marilyn Ingersoll of Mason City and Janice Sheldon of Clear Lake; his father-in-law, Fred Samson, of Mason City; his mother-in-law, Audrey Hart and her husband, Charles, of Swaledale; his brother-in-law, , John Samson and his wife, Jean, of Monroe; two sisters-in-law, Nancy Schippers and her husband, Larry, of Pella, and Phyllis King and her husband, Tom, of Dows; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.

ROCKFORD - Hazel E. Graper, 84, of the Nora Springs Care Center, formerly of Rockford, died Tuesday (Jan. 11, 2000) at the care center.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church of Rockford with the Rev. John Albrecht officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery in Rockford.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, and will continue for one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Hazel was born Dec. 31, 1915, in Madison, S.D., the daughter of Frank and Etta (Peck) Holt. She graduated from Clear Lake High School and La James College of Beauty. Hazel owned and operated Modernette Beauty Shop in Rockford before she was married.

She was married to Clarence W. Graper on Dec. 18, 1938, in Rockford.

Hazel was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Rockford where she was involved in various activities. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and enjoyed writing poetry, having a book of poetry published.

Hazel enjoyed being with her family and surrounding them with her love.

She is survived by two daughters, Kareen Clifton and her husband, M.L. "Duke," of Missouri, Valley, and Julie Eisentrager and her husband, Gene, of Hampton; a son, Ronal Graper and his wife, Ruth, of Barksdale Air Force Base, La..; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Donald Holt of Manly; and one sister, Frankie Bowcock and her husband, Lewis, of Mason City.

Hilma I. Van Riper, daughter of Ole and Annie (Ingebritson) Hermanson, was born Dec. 17, 1912, in rural Lake Mills. She was baptized and confirmed at Winnebago Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills.

She was united in marriage to Raymond Van Riper on Dec. 27, 1930, in Mason City. She was a homemaker and a lifetime resident of the Lake Mills area. She was a member of the Altar Guild.

Hilma passed away Tuesday (Jan. 11, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Survivors include two daughter and their husbands, Joanne and Ronald Jurasek of Nora Springs and Verlaine and Delbert Spurgeon of Truth or Consequences, N.M.; three granddaughters, Pamela and Tom Wingfield of Boone, Lori Spurgeon of Lake Mills and Joan and Robert Prevete of Plainview, N.Y.; three great-grandsons, Jacob Wingfield and Joshua Wingfield, both of Boone, and Christopher Durand of Lake Mills; and Robert Paul Prevete, to be born in March; two sisters, Ruth Holtan of Forest City and Leila Kloster of Lake Mills; and two sisters-in-law, Olga Hermanson of Lake Mills and Edna Uker of Mason City.

MISSION, Texas - John G. Brown, 67, of Mission, Texas, formerly of Mason City, died Sunday (Jan. 9, 2000) at the Mission Hospital in Mission.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City with the Rev. David Anderson of St. James Lutheran Church officiating. Full military rites will be conducted by members of the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

John G. Brown was born Jan. 26, 1932, in Mason City, the son of John G. and Vera (Curtis) Brown. He attended Mason City High School and in 1949 enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served in the Korean War, Vietnam War and was stationed in Japan. After 20 years of service he was discharged.

In 1978 he married Betty Schulte (Tanner) in Manly. In 1980, he moved to Topeka, Kans., and was employed at St. Francis Hospital as a security guard. Retiring in 1987 to become "winter Texans," the Browns moved to Mission fulltime in 1996. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mission, a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign War Post 733 in Mason City and a member of the Fleet Reserve Association.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Brown of Mission; two sons, Fred Brown and his wife, Bonnie, of Coralville, and Steve Brown and his wife, Terry, of Irvine, Calif.; a daughter, Linda Sommers and husband, Wayne, of Riverton, Utah; two stepdaughters, Pam Stockton and husband, Bill, of Louisville, Ky., and Lori Scott and husband, Jeff, of Victoria, Texas; one stepson, David Schulte and wife, Cheryl, of La Crescent, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; one great granddaughter; as well as a host of friends and neighbors. He will be sadly missed by all.

Rollin W. "Rolly" Brooks passed away Friday morning (Jan. 7, 2000) at Provena-Mercy Medical Center in Aurora after a valiant struggle with pneumonia and Parkinson's Disease. He was 85 and just 6 days short of his 60th wedding anniversary with his wife Margaret "Jane."

Rolly was born in Britt, Iowa, to Herbert Ray Brooks and Margaret Anna Hanson. He and Jane were married Jan. 14, 1940, in Omaha, Neb. He graduated from Iowa State University in the aftermath of the Depression in 1937 and began working for Layne Western Co. Water Supply Contractors in Omaha, Neb., where business conditions were tough and well and pump jobs few and far between. From Omaha, he was transferred to Ames, Iowa, where he established a district office, and then moved to Aurora to take over the office there. In Aurora he led the development of that office into the largest and most profitable company office.

During his career, he built the company from seven offices into a nationwide company, the largest water well drilling company in the world. He became president of the company in 1963 and chairman of the board in 1977. He also served as director of the Marley Company (the parent company of Layne-Western) from 1968 to 1981, retiring in 1983. He was revered by employees and business associates for his integrity and fair treatment of all.

During his life he was active in the Aurora Rotary Club, and a member of the Aurora Country Club, where he was an avid golfer. He was a most friendly and outgoing person with a marvelous sense of humor, and had a wide circle of dear and valued friends. He enjoyed numerous fishing trip with his sons to Canada, hunting and horseback riding with his wife and family. He was a man of many talents and enjoyed home remodeling projects and working around the house and barn where they kept their horses. He always had time for his family. His sons remember what an extraordinary example he was of how to live a life with integrity. His children and grandchildren have many treasured memories of time spent with him.

In addition to his widow, Jane, Rolly is survived by his brother, Lowell Brooks, Stephens, Pa., his children; grandchildren Susie (Dan) Konicek, their children Maggie, Ryan, Nicholas and Kelly, all in Geneva, Ill, Laura (John) Oyler, Ft. Myers, Fla., Katie Brooks, Seattle, Wash., also stepgrandchildren Johnny (Teri) Bolton, their three children, Walden, Colo.; Gina (Richard) Carney, their four children, Twin Falls, Idaho; Jacque (Jared) Pedersen, their daughter, Memphis, Tenn., and David Buck, Provo, Utah, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.

SHEFFIELD - Cecil Darrell Peter, 63, of Sheffield, died Wednesday (Jan. 12, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, of complications from Pick's Disease.

Cecil Darrell Peter was born Nov. 30, 1936, in Sheffield, the son of Lavine and Doris (Thomas) Peter. He attended Hollingsworth country school until fourth grade, then attended Sheffield Public School, graduating in 1954. After graduation he began farming with his father.

On Dec. 4, 1955, he married Mary Anderegg at Sheffield. They made their home in rural Sheffield, moving to the home farm in June of 1996. Farming was his occupation of choice. In July 1985, he became a feed sales representative for Pioneer Hi-Bred International, continuing until 1994 when his illness forced his retirement. In June 1998, he entered the Hampton Health Care Center where he resided until his death.

He was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Sheffield, serving on many boards and committees. He served on the Sheffield-Chapin school board and Sheffield Farmers Cooperative board of directors and was active in the Sheffield Lions Club. He enjoyed sports of all kinds, not only playing them himself but also watching his children and grandchildren participate through the years. Slo-pitch softball, bowling, horseshores, Saturday afternoon basketball, golf and tennis were just a few of the things he enjoyed.

Leaving to cherish his memory are his wife of 44 years, Mary, of Sheffield; four children, Doug and his wife, Karla, of Sheffield, Julie and her husband, Chuck Wiemann, of Des Moines, Gary and his wife, Suzanne, of Marion, and Mary Jo and her husband, Brad Koenigsberg, of Sheffield; one sister, Marlys, and her husband, Nate Pals, of Meservey; 14 grandchildren, Angie, Stacie, Haylie, Brittney, Tanner, Nicole, Chris, Jillian, Chelsea, Whitney, Bob, Mickenzie, Rachael and Peter; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

FOREST CITY - Gladys Lewis, 82, died Thursday (Jan. 13, 2000) at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, Minn.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Forest City. Burial will be in First Baptist Cemetery, Forest City.

Gladys E. Lewis was born at Arthur, Iowa, on May 5, 1917, the daughter of Ernest and Judith (Waldemer) Moline. She received her education and graduated from the Arthur community school district. She continued her education at the University of Northern Iowa Teachers College where she received her teacher's certificate.

She taught for several years before meeting her future husband. Gladys married Forest Lewis on Sept. 7, 1938, in Arthur. The couple made their home on a farm northeast of Forest City for many years.

Gladys was a wonderful homemaker and the consummate hostess. She did beautiful needlework and enjoyed sewing.

As a member of First Baptist Church in Forest City, she was active in Bible studies and was a Prayer Warrior. She enjoyed poetry and was an avid reader. Her family remembers her as a positive, resourceful person who could graciously handle any situation that life brought her.

Gladys is survived by her husband, Forest Lewis, of Forest City; two sons, Vern Lewis and his wife, Kathy, of Austin, Minn., and Joel Lewis and his wife, Kathy, of Hovland, Minn.; two daughters, Judy Carlsen and her husband, Bob, of New Brighton, Minn., and Cherry Dewey and her husband, Don, of Chanhassen, Minn.; a sister, Crystal Kroese, of Lincoln, Neb.; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

LITTLE CEDAR - Helen Culbertson, 88, died Tuesday (Jan. 11, 2000) at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church, 4255 Patent Ave., Little Cedar, with the Rev. Ted Stowers officiating. Burial will be in First Lutheran Cemetery at St. Ansgar.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Champion Funeral Home, 702 State St., Osage, and will continue one hour prior to the time of services at the church Saturday.

Helen was born Aug. 27, 1911, at Little Cedar, the daughter of August Sr. and Carrie (Seversen) Hultman. She attended Little Cedar schools and graduated from Little Cedar High School. She attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and received her bachelor's of arts in education from Upper Iowa University in Fayette.

Helen was a teacher for 46 years in Little Cedar and Osage. She also served as girls basketball coach while teaching at Little Cedar.

Helen married Claude Culbertson Aug. 14, 1945, at Seattle Washington. They made their home in Little Cedar. Helen enjoyed gardening and flowers. She always mowed her own lawn. She also enjoyed all sports and fishing.

She is survived by her sister, Viola Peterson, of Waterloo, and nieces and nephews.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Claude; five brothers; and three sisters.

OSEA P. KINGERY

GREENE - Osea P. Kingery, 97, of 420 E. Eleventh St., Cedar Falls, formerly of Greene, died Wednesday (Jan. 12, 2000) at Western Home in Cedar Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, Greene, with Pastor Galen E. Smith officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene where there will be a public scripture service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before the services at the church Saturday.

Osea P. Kingery was born Sept. 20, 1902, in Coldwater Township, Butler County, a daughter of Lewis and Sarah Elizabeth (Pringle) Hesalroad, and died Wednesday at the Western Home in Cedar Falls.

She received her education in the rural Coldwater Township schools and the Greene High School.

Osea was united in marriage to Darrell Kingery on May 5, 1920, at the Christian Church Parsonage in Charles City. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Windom, Minn., where they farmed until 1925 when they returned to Iowa where they farmed northwest of Greene in Union Township, Floyd County. In 1949 they moved to the Waterloo and Cedar Falls area where she has lived since.

Osea was baptized in the Christian Church in Greene and became a member of First Presbyterian Church in Greene where she taught Sunday school for many years. She later became a member of First Presbyterian Church in Cedar Falls.

She was a member of the Elm Springs Rebekkah Lodge, American Legion Auxiliary and the Halls Grove Ladies Aid. Her interests included collecting antiques, crocheting and knitting.

Living family members include her daughter, Ethel and Richard "Mac" McNutt of Roanoke, Va.; two sons, Keith and his wife Donna, of Green Valley, Ariz., and Darrell "Dutch" and his wife, Maxine Kingery, of Nashua; eight grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband on Oct. 2, 1979; one grandson, Richard Kingery, in 1982; her parents; three sisters, Adah Gates, Amy Shook and Leah White Quick; and one brother, Paul Hesalroad.

GREENE - Funeral services of Henry Arthur Lau of 323 E. Winnebago St., Appleton, Wis., will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 17, at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene with Pastor Lance Kittleson of St. Peter Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene with military rites conducted by the Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene.

Henry Arthur Lau was born April 1, 1930, in Fredericka, Bremer County, a son of Arthur and Ada (Whitman) Lau and died Wednesday (Jan. 12, 2000) at Appleton Medical Center.

He received his education in the Fredricka public schools graduating in 1948 and continued his training at a trade school. On Aug. 9, 1951, he was inducted into the United States Army where he served overseas during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged on April 28, 1953.

On Sept. 2, 1961, Henry was united in marriage to Judy Miller at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Greene. They made their home in Appleton, Wis., where he was employed for Hoersch Home Appliance Company and later Albany International. He retired from Appleton Structural Steel in March of 1983.

Living family members include his wife, Judy, of Appleton, Wis.; his mother, Ada Lau, of Fredericka; one sister, June Ives, of Oelwein; and his father-in-law, Dan Miller, of Greene.

He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Lau; and two sisters, Melva Welsch and Wilma Wydeven.

MASON CITY - Sara M. Helm, 73, of 337 20th Place S.W., died Thursday (Jan. 13, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Sara was born Nov. 12, 1926, in Butler County, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Lydia (Gabelmann) Rath. Sara married Rueben William "Bill" Perau on June 17, 1946, in Rochester, Minn. He died in 1959.

Sara then married Harold "Bud" Helm on Dec. 9, 1961, in Canton, S.D. The Helms lived in Charles City and Mason City before moving to Worthington, Minn., in 1980. They returned to Mason City in 1992.

While living in the North Iowa area, Sara worked for several businesses. She also volunteered at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa. She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and the V.F.W. Auxiliary.

She enjoyed sewing, cooking and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband, Harold "Bud" Helm Jr. of Mason City; daughters, Dawn Best and her husband, Larry, of Waterloo, Andrea Mujica and her husband, David, of Mason City, Teresa Helm of Burnsville, Minn., and Lori Benson and her husband, Scott, of Crystal, Minn.; sons, Monte Perau and his wife, Carolyn, of Suffolk, Va., and Randy Perau of Peoria, Ill.; grandchildren, Cory Best and his wife, Sarah Jo, Sara Carter and her husband, John, Quinton, Melanie, Erin and Jeffrey Perau, Emily and Natalie Mujica and Alex Benson; one great-granddaughter, Sydney Carter; a brother, Adolph "Bud" Rath, of Flint, Texas; and two sisters, Hannah Wood of Charles City and Leah Wilson of Waterloo.

Sara was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Bill; one sister, Martha; and one brother, Fred.

BELVA LORRAINE BRUNES

CANOGA PARK, Calif. - Belva Lorraine Brunes, 79, of Canoga Park, Calif., formerly of Mason City and Belmond, passed away Jan. 7 (2000) at the Topanga Terrace Convalescent Home in Canoga Park, Calif.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond, with Pastor Celestyne DeVance officiating. Inurnment will take place in the Amsterdam Cemetery at Goodell.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Belva, the daughter of Herman G. and Anna E. (Rust) Brunes, was born on Oct. 12, 1920, on the family farm northwest of Goodell. She grew up in the Goodell area where she attended country school. She graduated from Belmond High School in 1937. Following graduation from high school, she attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City.

Belva worked in insurance in the Clear Lake/Mason City area for many years. In 1954, Belva moved to Canoga Park, Calif., where she lived until the time of her death.

She was baptized and confirmed at the United Brethern Church in Goodell.

Belva is survived by one sister, Ethel Brunes, of Belmond; one brother, Stanton Brunes and his wife, Helen, of Goodell; three nephews, Steven Brunes and his wife, Luann, of Belmond, Don Brunes and his wife, Christine, of Groton, S.D., and Kevin Brunes and his wife, Suzan, of Klemme; and five great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Annalee, who died in 1990.

ALMA E. SPARGUR

FALLS CITY, Neb. - Alma E. Spargur, 84, of 518 W. 18th St., died Friday night, Jan. 7 (2000), at the Community Medical Center.

She was born Aug. 8, 1915, at Mason City, the daughter of Sigurd Johnson and Hattie (Breitweiser) Johnson. She was raised in Mason City and graduated from Mason City High School in 1933.

She was married to Hearld Spargur on Jan. 30, 1938, in Mason City. He passed away Nov. 30, 1989.

Mrs. Spargur worked for F.W. Woolworth Co. in Mason City before her marriage. They established their home in Mason City when married and moved to Falls City in 1944. She worked for Earl May, JC Penney and Ashley's Discount Store, all of Falls City.

She was a member of the First Christian Church and the B.P.O. Does Drove No. 56.

Mrs. Spargur is survived by two daughters, Donna (Mrs. Dan) Fernbacher of Springboro, Ohio, and Carol (Mrs. Robert) Bailey of Louisburg, Kan.; a sister, Jeanette Anderson, of Mason City, and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two brothers.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 11, at the Door Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Paul Weinert officiating. Burial was in Steele Cemetery.

Doug Bailey and Derek Bailey, both of Louisburg, Kan., Travis Bailey, of Kansas City, Mo., and Todd Harmon, Troy Harmon and Melvin Harmon, all of Falls City, served as pallbearers.

CECIL D. PETER

SHEFFIELD - Cecil Darrell Peter, 63, of Sheffield, died Wednesday (Jan. 12, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, from complications of Pick's Disease.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church, Sheffield, with the Rev. Remigio Panlaqui officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield.

Visitation was held from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Grarup Funeral Home, Sheffield.

Cecil Darrell Peter was born Nov. 30, 1936, in Sheffield, the son of Lavine and Doris (Thomas) Peter. He attended Hollingsworth country school until fourth grade and then attended Sheffield Public School, graduating in 1954. After graduation, he began farming with his father.

On Dec. 4, 1955, he married Mary Anderegg at Sheffield. They made their home in rural Sheffield, moving to the home farm in June of 1966.

Farming was his occupation of choice. In July 1985, he became a seed sales representative for Pioneer Hi-Bred International, continuing until 1994 when his illness forced his retirement. In June 1998, he entered the Hampton Health Care Center where he resided until his death.

He was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Sheffield, serving on many boards and committees. He served on the Sheffield-Chapin School Board and Sheffield Farmers Cooperative Board of Directors and was active in the Sheffield Lions Club. He enjoyed sports of all kinds, not only playing them himself, but also watching his children and grandchildren participate through the years. Slo-pitch softball, bowling, horseshoes, Saturday afternoon basketball, golf and tennis were just a few of the things he enjoyed.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 44 years, Mary, of Sheffield; four children, Doug and his wife, Karla, of Sheffield, Julie and her husband, Chuck Wiemann, of Des Moines, Gary and his wife, Suzanne, of Marion, and Mary Jo and her husband, Brad Koenigsberg, of Sheffield; one sister, Marlys and her husband, Nate Pals, of Meservey; 14 grandchildren, Angie, Stacie, Haylie, Brittney, Tanner, Nicole, Chris, Jillian, Chelsea, Whitney, Bob, Mickenzie, Rachael and Peter; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
