** Holda M. Olk

SHEFFIELD — Holda M. Olk, 96, of Sheffield, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, at the Sheffield Care Center, Sheffield.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Dec. 22, 1998, at the Immanual United Church of Christ, in Latimer, with the Rev. Jeff Long officiating. Burial was in the Hampton Cemetery, Hampton.

Holda was born Nov. 4, 1902, in rural Ackley, the daughter of Fred Eichmeier and Swanetta "Nettie" Alberts. She attended rural school near Dougherty and graduated from Sheffield High School and the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, after which she taught for three years in the Dougherty and Latimer areas.

On March 6, 1923 in Sheffield, she married Ernest Olk. They farmed near Allison for two years and in the Chapin area for 38 years before retiring and moving to Hampton in 1963.

Holda was a member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ and church's women's fellowship. She also served on the Chapin School board for a number of years.

Holda felt blessed to have her daughter, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren a part of her everyday life. She enjoyed cooking, baking and sewing.

She is survived by a daughter, Lucille Deam, of Sheffield; a sister, Hilda Stock and her husband, John, of Dumont; two grandchildren, Richard Deam and his wife, Connie, of Sheffield, and Nancy Adams and her husband, Larry, of Chapin; five great-grandchildren, Seth Deam, Maria Deam, Ira Deam, Andrea Adams and Michaela Adams.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, Fred; a daughter, Minnie; and three brothers, Fred, Herman and Albert Eichmeier; and also a son-in-law, Willis Deam.

** John E. Wood

WODEN — John E. Wood, 92, died Tuesday (Jan. 5, 1999) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Willis Nicholson officiating. Interment will be in the Bingham Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Cataldo Funeral Chapel.

Other funeral arrangements are incomplete at the funeral chapel.

** Louise M. Hermann

ROCKFORD — Louise M. Hermann, 107, of 105 Fifth St. N.W., Rockford, died Sunday morning (Jan. 3, 1999) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Holy Name Catholic Church, Rockford, with the Rev. Ron Friedell officiating. Interment will be at the Roseville Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the church, with a parish scripture service at 7 p.m., followed by a rosary.

Fullerton Schumburg Funeral Home, Rockford, is in charge of arrangements.

Louise was born on March 7, 1891 on a farm near Charles City, to Frank and Barbara (Hanah) Vala. She was one of six children. She attended the Oakwood School and then was united in marriage to John "Jack" P. Hermann on Oct. 4, 1916. To this union were born three children.

When she moved to Rockford, she started helping her sister, Anna Vala with her sewing and seamstress work.

Louise loved to dance and enjoyed the Lawrence Welk show as well as watching golf and baseball. She was a great gardener, raising flowers and canning her vegetables. She loved to spend time at her home and did so until this last November when she moved to the Nora Springs Care Center. Louise was an excellent cook and at Christmas time made her specialty, Kolache.

She was a long time member of Holy Name Catholic Church.

Those thankful for having shared Louise's life include her three children, Marcus and his wife, Anna Mae Hermann, of Marble Rock; Mary Louise and her husband, Leonard Greiner, of Iowa Falls; and Margaret Hermann, of Rochester, Minn.; one sister, Mrs. Lydia Hermann, of Yankton, S.D.; five grandchildren, Bill and Joe Hermann, Jim and Steve Greiner, and Joan Jennings; eight great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; two sisters, Mary Musil and Anna Vala; and two brothers, Charles and Frank Vala.

** Arthur Charles Rice

MASON CITY — Arthur Charles Rice Sr., 65, of 625 14th Ave. N., #111, died Friday (Jan. 1, 1999) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

His body was cremated. There will be no visitation. Private family graveside services will be held at Grinnell Cemetery.

Arthur Charles Rice Sr. was born Dec. 8, 1933, in Grinnell, the son of Merlin and Leona (Rinshaw) Rice. He owned Art's Body Shop in Grinnell and Marshalltown. He worked as a salesman at Price Motors in Mason City, until falling ill in 1996.

He was a great creator of many crafts and a fine artsman.

He is survived by his children, Arthur C. Rice Jr. "Ace", of Clear Lake, Mike Rice, Melody Rice and Rachell Rice, all of Los Angeles, Steve Griffith of Clear Lake, Gina McClun and her husband, Brent, of Lawrence, Kan., Kim Gjetley and her husband, Bruce, of Thornton; his grandchildren, Amber, Kendra, Kali and Bruce Gjetley, all of Thornton, Stephanie and Sammoth Griffith of Clear Lake, and Jason and Scott Rice of Marshalltown.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, is in charge of arrangements.

** Stanley Nash

MARBLE ROCK — Stanley Nash, 48, died Monday (Jan. 4, 1999) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Reid's Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dave Callison of Faith Baptist Church, Mason City, officiating. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, and from 10 a.m. to service time on Saturday at the funeral chapel.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Stanley Nash Memorial Fund in care of the family.

Stanley Nash was born July 29, 1950, in Charles City.

Survivors include a son, Ben Nash of Rockwell; two daughters, Amy Fisher and Amber Nash, both of Nashua; two grandchildren; his mother, Lola Nash of Charles City; two brothers, Tom Nash of Rudd, and Daniel Nash of Charles City; and two sisters, Gloria Willer of Aloha, Ore., and Miriam Nash of Kansas City, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his father, and two brothers.

** Peter C. Goodnature

GARNER — Peter C. Goodnature, 80, died Tuesday (Jan. 5, 1999) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Boniface Catholic Church with the Rev. John W. Herman officiating.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday with a scriptural wake service at 4:30 p.m., at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel.

Other arrangements are incomplete at the funeral chapel.

** Stanley A. Collins

MASON CITY — Stanley A. Collins, 89, of 2002 S. Georgia Ave., died Monday (Jan. 4, 1999) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Shogren officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, with military honors conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Friends may call one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday. Major-Erickson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

The family suggests memorials to Wesley United Methodist Church or the organization of your choice.

Stan was born on Dec. 22, 1909, on the family farm near Albion. He graduated from Ames Public High School. At Iowa State College he lettered in wrestling and rode in the ROTC trick cavalry team. After graduating from Iowa State College he worked as an engineer for the Civilian Conservation Corp. He married Clarice Torkelson of Story City on June 22, 1935.

During World War II he served in the Army Engineer Corp. in Europe. As the Special Area Engineer he was responsible for construction of Air Force and Eisenhower's Supreme Headquarters in England, France and Germany. He remained in the Army Reserve and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel with 37 years of service.

He was a district engineer for the Soil Conservation Service in Eldora, from 1945 to 1953, and an area engineer in Mason City from 1953 to 1971. He was project engineer for the 31,500 acre Deer Creek Watershed in Worth County. From 1950 to 1995, Stan managed his farm as well as several farms in central Iowa for relatives who were in foreign service.

Stan was an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church. He was the local champion and district field officer for National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He served as the Iowa Civil Defense Radiological Officer for several years.

Stan was an avid reader throughout his life. He enjoyed traveling throughout the world, photography and fishing at the family cabin in Cass Lake, Minn.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Clarice, of Mason City; sons, Stanley B. Collins and his wife, Karla, of St. Paul, Minn., and Thomas E. Collins and his wife, Shirley, of St. Paul; five grandchildren, Christopher, Mary, Philip, Gregory and Douglas; four great-grandchildren, Jordan, Bayleigh, Margaret and Brogen; a brother, Edgar V. Collins Jr. of Ames; and a sister, Mary C. Johnson of Ames.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar V. and Amy W. Collins; his son, David W.; daughter-in-law, Ann; and two grandsons, Scott and Jeffrey.

** Max Ronald Schaefer

BUFFALO CENTER — Max Ronald Schaefer, 69, of Buffalo Center, died Sunday (Jan. 3, 1999) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center West, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, Buffalo Center, with the Rev. Lois Abel officiating. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery, Buffalo Center.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Winter Funeral Home, 414 First St. N.W., Buffalo Center and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

Max Ronald Schaefer was born July 15, 1929, in Buffalo Center.

Survivors include two sons, Morey Schaefer, of Mankato, Minn., and Marty Schaefer, of Buffalo Center; and one brother, Denis Schaefer, of Ames.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and two sisters.

HAMPTON — Marie F. Denning, 83, of Hampton, died Tuesday (Jan. 5, 1999) at Franklin General Hospital.

SHEFFIELD — Herbert A. Jensen, of Sheffield, died Monday (Jan. 4, 1999) in Sheffield.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Zion-St. John Lutheran Church, Sheffield, with the Rev. Kent Mechler officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Grarup Funeral Home, Sheffield.

Herbert Jensen was born in Seattle, Wash., to John and Nora Jensen. He received his education there, graduating from Lincoln High School and Wilson Business College.

He served in the Navy from 1941 to 1945. On June 26, 1943, he was married to Lezona Oelkers at the Luther Place Memorial Church, in Washington, D.C.

Before entering the Navy, he worked for Western Electric. After his discharge, while in Seattle, he was employed by the Seattle Police Force and Augsburg Publishing Company.

He moved to Sheffield in 1946 and owned and operated the Herb & Lee Cafe. He later worked for AMPI in Mason City from which he retired in 1981. He was a member of the Zion-St. John Lutheran Church of Sheffield, Iowa.

He is survived by his wife, Lezona; three nephews, Roger Crawford and his wife, Cynthia, of Parkville, Mo.; Jay Crawford and his wife, Jane, of Iowa City, and John Nesholm and his wife, Laurel, of Seattle; one niece, Marcia Etnier and her husband, Roger, of Sheffield; several great-nieces and a great-nephew; one brother, Earl Lethenstrom, of Seattle, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Lillian Nesholm.

Lois M. Vigdal

WHITTEMORE — Lois M. Vigdal, 77, of Whittemore, died Monday (Jan. 4, 1999) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Michael Catholic Church, Whittemore, with the Rev. Ed Murray officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Whittemore, with a 3 p.m. parish rosary and a 7:30 p.m. rosary.

Lois M. Vigdal was born March 20, 1921, in Oyens.

Survivors include four sons, Roger Vigdal, of Spirit Lake, Carl Vigdal, of Keller, Texas, Larry Vigdal, of Embarrass, Minn. and John Vigdal, of Rolfe; two daughters, Mary Voigt, of Pickerington, Ohio, and Ann Hansen Vogt, of Big Lake, Minn.; 17 grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Briggs, of Charles City, and Rose Mary Chambers, of Marble Rock; three brothers, Ronald Hansen, of Algona, Wayne Hansen, of Galena, Ill., and Vic Hansen, of Schaumburg, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers, and two sisters.

CORWITH — Carl Long, 83, of Corwith, died Tuesday (Jan. 5, 1999) at Kanawha Community Home.

** Evelyn C. Kinion

MASON CITY — Evelyn C. Kinion, 84, died Monday (Jan. 4, 1999) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A funeral Mass will be held at noon Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Carl A. Ries officiating. Burial will be in the Grundy Center Cemetery, Grundy Center.

Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a Catholic Daughters of America Rosary at 5 p.m., and a Scriptural Wake Service following at 7 p.m.

The family requests that memorials be directed to Hospice of North Iowa in memory of Evelyn C. Kinion.

Evelyn Carol Kinion was born May 25, 1914, in Waterloo, the daughter of Frank and Kathrine (Burger) Manske.

She was united in marriage to Keith F. Kinion on Nov. 28, 1934, at St. John's Catholic Church in Waterloo.

Evelyn and Keith enjoyed spending their winters in Apache Junction, Ariz., and their summers camping in Decorah. She also was an avid reader of novels.

She was a wonderful mother, wife and friend and will be dearly missed.

Evelyn was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Anthony's Circle and the Catholic Daughters of America.

Those left to cherish her memory are three children, Kay Kinion and his wife, Lillian, of Springfield, Mo., Karen Neimants and her husband, Michael, of Omaha, Neb., and Karla Goethe and her husband, Allen, of Arlington, Va.; grandchildren, Kevin, Kurtis, Konnie, Kent, Keith, Katey, Kimberly, Jacob and James; 12 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Catherine Kelly and her husband, Richard, of Waterloo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Keith; a daughter, Kathleen; and one brother, Robert.

HAMPTON — Marie F. Denning, 83, of Hampton, died Tuesday (Jan. 5, 1999) at Franklin General Hospital, Hampton.

CORWITH — Carl Robinson Long, 83, of Corwith, died Tuesday (Jan. 5, 1999) at the Kanawha Community Home, Kanawha.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John Lutheran Church, Corwith, with the Rev. Caroline Engelbrecht officiating. Burial will be in the Corwith Cemetery.

Carl Robinson Long was born May 31, 1915, in Corwith.

Survivors include his wife, Emily, of Corwith; his children, Carl David Long, of Postville, and Sherrie Dobson, of Chaska, Minn.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Alice C. Lederer, of Sun City West, Ariz..

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, one son and one great-grandson.

** Stanley R. Nash

MARBLE ROCK — Funeral services for Stanley R. Nash, 48, of 525 S. Main, Marble Rock, will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Marble Rock, with the Rev. Dave Callison of Faith Baptist Church in Mason City officiating. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery, Marble Rock.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. until time of services on Saturday at the chapel.

Stanley Ray Nash was born July 29, 1950, at the Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City, a son of Merle and Lola (Lines) Nash, and died Monday (Jan. 4, 1999) at his home in Marble Rock.

He received his education in the Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock School District, graduating in 1968.

He was first employed as a truck driver for the Rockford Brick and Tile Company. He had worked for several companies in the North Iowa area as a truck driver, including his last employment with Allied Construction Company in Charles City.

On Feb. 23, 1974, he was united in marriage to Diania Pratt at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Nashua. To this union were born three children: Amy, Ben and Amber.

Stan's interests included doing garden tilling, shooting pool and being with his grandchildren. He loved his dogs, Buddy and Pedro.

Living family members include a son, Ben and his wife, Margaret Nash, of Rockwell; two daughters, Amy and her husband, Don Fisher, and Amber Nash; and their mother Diania Nash, all of Nashua; two grandchildren, Briley Fisher and Trevor Nash; his mother, Lola Nash, of Charles City; two brothers, Tom Nash, of Rudd, and Daniel and his wife, Sharon Nash, of Charles City; and two sisters, Gloria and her husband, Ray Willer, of Aloha, Ore., and Miriam Nash, of Kansas City, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1980; and two brothers, Steven Nash in 1974 and S. Lee Nash in 1989.

** Warren D. Thompson

BELMOND — Warren D. Thompson, 81, of Belmond, died Wednesday (Jan. 6, 1999) at the Rotary Ann Home, Eagle Grove.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. John Lutheran Church, Belmond, with the Rev. Lowell Halvorson officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Tenold Funeral Home, Belmond, and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Warren was born on Nov. 13, 1917, in Manilla.

Survivors include four daughters, Kristine Paladino, of Sterling, Ill., Susan Waxler, of Beloit, Wis., Lora Thompson, of Waterloo, and Leslie Thayer, of Clarion; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Harriet Eng, of Mason City.

Warren was preceded in death by his parents, wife and two brothers.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Marguarite L. Harmon, 79, formerly of Mason City, died Wednesday (Jan. 6, 1999) at the Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis.

KANAWHA — Ben Wilkinson, 83, of Kanawha, died Wednesday (Jan. 6, 1999) at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester.

** Gladys L. Chelsvig

KANAWHA — Gladys L. Chelsvig, 95, of Kanawha, died Wednesday (Jan. 6, 1999) at the Kanawha Community Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Kanawha Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Keith Sievers officiating. Burial will be in the Amsterdam Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel, Kanawha, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Gladys L. Chelsvig was born Feb. 16, 1903, in Kanawha.

Survivors include one daughter, Kae Dallman, of Kanawha; one son, Keith Chelsvig, of Lawrenceville, Ill.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Arlene Ziegler and Frances Anderson, both of Kanawha.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother and five sisters.

** Dorothy Mehus Johnson

NEWTON — Dorothy Mehus Johnson, 78, formerly of Britt and Belmond, died Sunday (Jan. 3, 1999) at the Nelson Manor Nursing Home in Newton.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Belmond, with the Rev. Lowell Halvorson officiating. Interment will be in the St. Olaf Cemetery, Belmond.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home in Kanawha, and one hour prior to services at the church in Belmond.

Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond, is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy, the daughter of Alfred and Grace Abbas Johnson was born Jan. 11, 1920, in Buffalo Center, Iowa. Dorothy grew up in the Belmond area, attending Belmond schools.

On Nov. 7, 1941, she was united in marriage to Granville Mehus. The couple made their home in the Belmond/Kanawha area, where Dorothy was a homemaker, but she also worked at various businesses, such as the Hughes Cafe, the Farmer's Produce and was a nurse's aide for a time at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital. Granville passed away on May 29, 1961.

She was then united in marriage to Howard Johnson on Oct. 22, 1966, in Britt, Iowa. The couple made their home in Britt, where Dorothy worked at the We-3 Grocery. Dorothy also cared for people in their homes. In 1990, Howard passed away.

She enjoyed doing needlework, collecting rocks, working in her garden and watching birds. Dorothy was a member of the St. Olaf Lutheran Church in rural Belmond.

She was a resident of the Westview Care Center for a short time before moving to the Nelson manor Nursing Home in 1994.

She is survived by a daughter, Marilyn Brown, of Newton; her son, Bruce Mehus and his wife, Helen, of Indiana, Pa.; a stepdaughter, Jody Treider, of Fairmont, Minn.; five grandchildren, Tammy, Scott, Chad, Brian and Melanie; five great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; three sisters, Alvera Phoenix, of Tucson, Ariz.; Josephine Shelburg, of Des Moines; and Kathleen Sazanovich and her husband, Donald, of Mason City; and two brothers, Marvin Johnson and his wife, Therese, of Stacyville; Kenneth Johnson and his wife, Dorothy, of Kansas City, Kan.; a sister-in-law, Adean Dorr and her husband, Leland, of Belmond; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Granville in 1961; her daughter, Sandra, in 1976; a grandson in 1986; her second husband, Howard, in 1990; two sisters, Marie Curtis and Jennie LaRue; and two brothers, Fred Johnson and Merriell Johnson.

** Peter C. Goodnature

GARNER — Peter C. Goodnature, 80, of Garner, died Tuesday (Jan. 5, 1999) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with the Rev. John W. Hemann officiating. Interment will be at a later date in St. Mary's Cemetery, Newry, Minn.

Peter Claire Goodnature, the son of David F. and Johanna (Keefe) Goodnature was born Oct. 5, 1918, on the family farm near Ellendale, Minn. He attended grade school at Ellendale and graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1937.

He worked at Thompson and Nelson General Store at Geneva until 1938. He then worked for the Bob Wallace Mercantile Company in Albert Lea from 1938 to 1942, where he was in charge of the downstairs store.

In 1942, he entered the United States Army at Fort Snelling, Minn. He saw active service in the American Theater of Operations and was discharged from the Army on Nov. 23, 1945. He returned to Wallace's in Albert Lea and then was transfered to manage the Fairmont store.

On Feb. 7, 1948, he was married to Phyllis Mart, of Armstrong, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Armstrong.

In 1950, he bought the Garner Federated Store from George Mooers. At one time he had owned a clothing store in Kanawha and also the Ben Franklin Variety Store in Garner.

In 49 years of business, The Goodnature Store grew from a double store front to 20,000 square feet of retail space serving customers from primarily Minnesota and Iowa as well as visitors from all over the world.

Community was important to Pete. He was recently recognized by the Garner Jaycees as an outstanding community leader for his dedicated service and contributions to the community. This is but one of many recognitions he has received for a lifetime of service.

He enjoyed his grandchildren, gardening, fishing, his pets and a good joke.

He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus in Albert Lea, American Legion and the Chamber of Commerce. He also served on the Retail Chamber of Commerce Board, Crown Jewel, Garner Library Board and the Midwest Stores where he had served as president. He also recently joined World Wide Distributors.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Phyllis, of Garner; his children, Don J. Goodnature, of Sunnyvale, Calif.; Neil F. Goodnature, of Garner; Bryce A. Goodnature and his wife, Yvanne Berryer, of Miami, Fla.; Mary M. Goodnature and fiance, Bob Kardash, of San Francisco, Calif.; and Marie G. Frederick and husband, Jim, of Clear Lake; nine grandchildren, Taisa Goodnature, of Sunnyvale, Calif.; Melissa Nicnick, of Ames; Michael, Mia and Marie Goodnature, of Miami, Fla.; and Ben, Zach, Shayna and Miranda Frederick, of Clear Lake; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Octave, Daniel, David, Mike and John Goodnature; and three sisters, Marie, Pauline and an infant sister.

WODEN — John E. Wood, 92, of Woden died Tuesday (Jan. 5, 1999) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Willis Nicholson officiating. Interment will be in Bingham Township Cemetery, Woden.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, Woden and one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

John Edward Wood, the son of Ed and Catherine (Barth) Wood, was born March 29, 1906, near Woden. He attended the rural schools of Bingham Township and also Crystal Lake High School.

On April 22, 1937, he was married to Katherine A. Kreitlow, of Forest City, at the Crystal Lake United Methodist Church parsonage.

He farmed all of his life in Bingham and Crystal townships and was active in mechanical work.

John loved to play the organ, work on daily crossword puzzles and go to the Woden Senior Citizens. He enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Katherine, of Woden; his children, Kathleen Rasmuson and her husband, Richard, of Mason City and Roger Wood and his wife, Patricia, of Woden; six grandchildren, Mark Rasmuson and his wife, Brenda, of Swaledale; Susan Baldwin and her husband, Keith, of Rockwell; Sarah Craft, of Flint, Texas; Michael Rasmuson and his wife, Chrystal, of Fort Dodge; Penny Kirschbaum and her husband, Dave, of Wilton; and Jon Wood, of Woden; 11 great-grandchildren, Matthew and Lori Rasmuson, Katie, Megan and Jenna Baldwin, Jessica and Calli Craft; Tyler and Jordan Rasmuson; and Chelsie and Rachel Kirschbaum; two sisters, Ruby Holt, of Mason City and Claribel DeVries and her husband, Jack, of Buffalo Center; one brother, Melvin Wood and his wife, Mary, of Zephyrhills, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Kreitlow, of Clarion; and many nieces and nephews.

BELMOND — Clara Mae Steenblock, 82, of Belmond, died Tuesday (Jan. 5, 1999) at the Belmond Health Care Center, Belmond.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Belmond, with the Rev. Celestyne DeVance officiating. Interment will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

Clara Mae, the daughter of Simon C. and Cathryn Patterson Mosiman, was born May 23, 1916, at Stillson, Iowa. She attended country schools near Stillson, riding a horse-drawn school bus. In the early 1930's Clara Mae moved to Belmond.

On April 3, 1937, she was united in marriage to Paul Steenblock, in Webster City, Iowa. The couple made their home in Belmond, where Clara Mae was a homemaker, but also worked at the "K" Motel and the nursing home. In 1988, the couple moved to the Belmond Retirement Center.

Clara Mae enjoyed crocheting and making miscellaneous things for her family. She also enjoyed sewing and canning. Clara Mae was known for her homemade goodies and tea that she shared with her family and friends.

She was an active member of the United Methodist Church where she was involved in the Ladies Circle. She was also a Brownie Leader and a member of the GEM Card Club. Her entire family was the most important part of her life and she will be sorely missed.

Clara Mae was survived by two daughters, JoAnn Roehre and her husband, Tom, of Plymouth, Wis.; Cathryn Ibeling and her husband, Scott, of Aplington, Iowa; two sons, Len Steenblock and his wife, LuAnn, of Belmond; and Leslie Steenblock and his wife, Susan, of Mason City; five grandchildren, Brenda Roehre, of Plymouth, Wis., Paul Steenblock and his wife, Sue, of Las Vegas, Nev., Sara Van de Pas and her husband, Hubert, of Plymouth, Wis.; John Steenblock, of Belmond; and Andrew Steenblock, of Mason City; four great-grandchildren Melissa, Marike, Luciene, and Michaela; two sisters, Esther Daniels and her husband, Pete, of Garner, and Beverly Faaborg and her husband, Lloyd, of Rockwell; three brothers, Archie Mosiman and his wife, Elinor, of Clear Lake; Robert Mosiman and his wife, Irene, of Meservey; and Cecil Mosiman and his wife, June, of Belmond; and numerous nieces and nephews.

** Robert D. Caffrey

MONARCH BEACH, Calif. — Robert D. Caffrey, 70, of Monarch Beach, Calif., and formerly of the Clear Lake area, died Dec. 30, 1998, in California of complications from cancer and pneumonia.

He was born Aug. 23, 1928, in Swaledale, to Mr. and Mrs. Guy Caffrey. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and served in Europe with the Allied Occupation Force immediately following World War II.

Following an honorable military service, Bob commenced a career in heavy construction in Alaska, where he advanced to project manager. He supervised major private and public projects, including several Alaskan military bases.

In 1992, he retired with his wife to their winter home in California.

His wishes were to be cremated with no service.

Bob is survived by Draga, his loving wife of 35 years, his daughter, Mrs. Tom (Candace) Smith and two grandsons, all of Cyprus, Calif., his mother, Marjorie Caffrey of Clear Lake, and his brother, Roger Caffrey of Thornton.

BANCROFT — Frances M. Antoine, 84, died Thursday (Jan. 7, 1999) at the Heritage Nursing Home.

MASON CITY — Marguerite L. Harmon, 79, formerly of Mason City, died Wednesday (Jan. 6, 1999) at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. She had been living at 3245 Vera Cruz Ave. N., Crystal, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Doug Anderson of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral chapel.

Marguerite was born on April 22, 1919, in Mason City, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. DiMork. She was then adopted by the Joseph Scoville family, who raised her. She attended school through the eighth grade in Sioux City and then graduated from Mason City High School.

She worked for awhile at a convent in Sioux City and then spent most of the rest of her life in Mason City, until moving to Crystal in 1991.

She was united in marriage to George Wesley Harmon on May 7, 1941, in Mason City, and to this marriage were born two sons.

Marguerite was a great storyteller, spending many hours reminiscing about her years growing up and her family. She also enjoyed visiting with her friends, reading all types of novels, fishing at Clear Lake and area rivers and streams, especially for catfish in the Cedar and Shell Rock rivers. She knitted many items which included a "truckload" of baby booties that she would sell so she could purchase candy bars and other goodies that she loved.

Those thankful for sharing in Marguerite's life include her two sons, Charles and his wife, June Harmon, of Brooklyn Center, Minn.; David W. and his wife, Shirley Harmon, of Swaledale; two grandchildren, Brad and his wife, Julie Harmon, of Oak Grove, Minn., and Shelly and her husband, Jim Ward, of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; and four great-grandchildren, Jennie, Jessica, and Jamie Ward and Reed Harmon.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George on Dec. 23, 1959, and one grandson, David Wesley Harmon Jr.

NORTHWOOD — Caroline Senne, 93, of Northwood, who made her home the past seven years at the Knutson Apartments in Albert Lea, Minn., died Wednesday (Jan. 6, 1999) at Naeve Hospital in Albert Lea.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Lutheran Church, Northwood, with the Rev. David Wall officiating. Burial will be in the South Shell Rock Cemetery, Northwood.

Friends may call from 4:30 to 6 p.m. today at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 99 11th St. S., Northwood, and one hour prior to service time on Saturday at the church.

Caroline Senne was born on July 2, 1905, in Woden, the daughter of Eggo and Etta (Eden) Stohr. She was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation in the Lutheran faith at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Titonka.

She attended and received her education in the Woden School System. She was united in marriage to Dick Senne on Feb. 22, 1932, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, and to this union were born six children. He preceded her in death on April 15, 1979.

After their marriage together, they farmed near Woden for several years before moving to their farm west of Northwood. Caroline took great pride in her role as a farmer's wife and mother and dedicated her life to this end.

Due to failing eyesight and hearing, her activities during her last years were limited, but she spent many enjoyable times calling her children and singing her favorite hymns in English and German and many familiar tunes from her school days from memory.

She will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by her family, many nieces and nephews and friends.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood and the church circle.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Alvina Greenwood and her husband, John, of Minneapolis, Irene Holthaus and her husband, Edward, of Ames, Arthur Senne and his wife, Renata, of Northwood, Ardella Mostrom and her husband, Duane, of Story City, and Joann Dole of Lawton, Okla.; 19 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Etta Bruns of Britt, Lydia Hillenga of Woden, and Lora Redenius of Britt; one sister-in-law, Gertie Stohr of Britt; and a daughter-in-law, Helen Senne of Northwood; as well as other relatives and friends.

Gertrude Marie Roppe was born on Aug. 17, 1930, in Meservey, the daughter of Henry and Alvina (Sandersfeld) Linne Sr.

She attended and received her education in the Clear Lake School System and attended Clear Lake High School. At the age of 15, she began working at a grocery store in Clear Lake before starting to work for Fareway Grocery Store in Mason City, where she worked for several years.

She was united in marriage to Kenneth Roppe on Aug. 5, 1956, at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood. After their marriage, they lived on a farm in rural Northwood, where she began working as a home-health aide in Worth County. She also worked for Chuck Reeder in the Northwood Locker, for the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood and was the custodian at the Northwood State Bank until she retired due to ill health.

She enjoyed playing cards and puzzles and working with flowers, but her great love and enjoyment was her family and going to their homes and helping them.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church and the church circle.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Kenneth Roppe of Northwood; three children, Sherrie Winter and her husband, Bryan, of Rochester, Minn., Karen Emanuel and her husband, Tony, of Lyle, Minn., and Bonnie Roppe of Rochester, Minn.; six grandchildren, Brandon, Chad, Heather and Jared Emanuel and Devin and Brittany Winter; one sister, Trinia Mestad and her husband, Orval, of Clear Lake; one brother, Henry Linne Jr. and his wife, Donna, of Coralville; as well as other relatives and friends.

Mattie Mildred Riemer, the daughter of Fred and Cecelia (Nesbit) Gates, was born Oct. 1, 1900, in Ell Township. She attended the rural schools of Hancock County and Klemme High School. She taught at Liberty No. 2 rural school.

On Feb. 10, 1921, she was married to Ben Riemer at her parent's home in Ingram, Wis. The couple farmed the Riemer family farm where Ben had lived all his life. In 1946, they moved to Garner. Mattie was a cook at the Grill and Nesbit cafes in Garner, and worked at the R Motel for 10 years. She enjoyed her family, baking, sewing, friends and gardening.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, U.M.W., and Ruth's Circle.

She is survived by her grandchildren, Mary Kay Janusik of Milwaukee, and her children, Troy Janusik and his wife, Kelly, and his sons, Benjamin and Alexander, Steven Janusik and his wife, Holly, and their sons, Aaron and Kyle, Kristi Janusik and her sons, Jacob and Jason Janusik, Patricia Ann Kern of Des Plaines, Ill., Robert Kern of Garner, and Bonnie Lynne Kern of Mason City, and her daughter, Jessica Kern; a sister, Margaret Reis of Waterloo; and a sister-in-law, Helen Gates of Halsy, Ore.

DUBUQUE — Roy C. Berrie, 87, of 417 S. Grandview Ave., Dubuque, died Wednesday (Jan. 6, 1999) at his home.

Roy C. Berrie was born April 6, 1911 in Burlington, Kan., a son of Lewis Charles and Rose Belle (Hansen) Berrie.

He was united in marriage to Betty Barry in 1936, in St. Cecelia Church, Algona.

He was employed as a printer at Advanced Publishing Company, Algona; and Stoyles Press, in Mason City. He then owned and operated the Elk Boat Line Marina, in MacGregor. He then moved to Dubuque and worked as a printer at the Telegraph Herald and at Union Hoermann Press until retirement.

He was a member of St. Raphael Cathedral; the Elk's Club; Knights of Columbus, Elkader Council; Kiwanis in Mason City; and Lions Club, in MacGregor.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Berrie, of Dubuque; two sons, David Berrie and his wife, Shirley, of Newhall, Calif., and Phillip Berrie and his wife, Patricia, of Urbandale; and one daughter, Rosanne Wolverton, and her husband, Arvon, of Chino, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Edwin Berrie and his wife, Arlene, of Mason City; Raymond Berrie and his wife, Marie, of Kearns, Utah; and William Berrie, of Ephrata, Wash.; and one sister, Iris Scribner, of Camdenton, Mo.

EAGLE GROVE — Fern Robinson, 84, of Eagle Grove, died Thursday (Jan. 7, 1999) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the United Presbyterian Church, in Goldfield, with the Rev. Ellen G. Brantley officiating. Burial will be in the Glenwood Cemetery, in Goldfield.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, with the family present, at the Willim Funeral Home in Eagle Grove.

Fern was born on May 15, 1914, in the Evergreen Neighborhood of Wright County, Iowa, to Oliver and Dora (Young) Pletcher. She was educated in the rural schools of Wright County and then graduated from Goldfield High School in 1932.

Fern was united in marriage with Farrell E. Robinson on June 17, 1935, in Fairbault, Minn. They lived in National City, Calif., during World War II and then moved back to Eagle Grove in 1946. They purchased an acreage west of Eagle Grove (Thor, Iowa) where they farmed for several years.

Farrell preceded her in death in July of 1979. Fern moved to Rotary Ann South in 1983 and then to the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City, in July of 1997.

Fern was a life-long member of the United Presbyterian Church in Goldfield. She enjoyed woodworking, knitting and, most of all, a love for horses, riding and collecting.

Fern is survived by one son, Lee and his wife, Fern, of Mason City; two granddaughters, Janna Robinson and her husband, James Fortier, of Alexandria, N.H. and Jennifer Schaeffer and her husband, Ray, of Clear Lake; one sister, Francis Kelling, of Eagle Grove; and one brother, William Pletcher, of Scottsdale, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Farrell E.; one son, Rex; and three sisters, Hazel, Lydia and Evelyn.

BELMOND — Kenlee Sue Uhlenhopp, one-week-old infant daughter of Kirk and Renee Uhlenhopp, of Belmond, died Thursday (Jan. 7, 1999) at Children's Hospital, Minneapolis, Minn.

** Genevieve Mary Melhus

CLARION — Genevieve Mary Melhus, 95, died Friday (Jan. 8, 1999) at the Rotary Ann Home, Eagle Grove.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Catholic Church with the Rev. Wayne Droessler officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Monday at Willim Funeral Home, Clarion, with a vigil service at 7 p.m.

Genevieve Mary Melhus was born Sept. 4, 1903, in Clarion.

Survivors include her children, Kenneth of Eagle Grove, Yvonne Slevin of Rancho Cordova, Calif., Robert of Peculiar, Mo., Lee of Clear Lake, and Jean Ann Johnston of Iowa City; 17 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a brother, Russell Rohrer of Seattle, Wash.; and a sister, Catherine Jerde of Webster City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, six brothers and sisters, and a grandson.

RICEVILLE — Bertha Grimm, 91, died Friday (Jan. 8, 1999) at the Riceville Community Rest Home.

A funeral Mass of Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. John Moser officiating. Spring burial will be held in the Calvary Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Lindstrom Funeral Home, with a rosary at 5 p.m., and a scripture service at 7 p.m.

Bertha Grimm was born March 19, 1907, in Olney, Ill.

Survivors include seven sons, Donald of Waterloo, Ray of Hudson, Fred of Rochester, Minn., Gene of Riceville, Roy of Rochester, Ronnie of Riceville, and Dennis of Waterloo; four daughters, Adeline (Addie) Ameling of Waterloo, Rosella (Rosie) Thompson of Waterloo, Bernita (Babe) Bottema of Waterloo, and Karen Peik of Rochester; 47 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Wilbur Weber of La Porte City, and Charles Weber of Austin, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two children, six brothers, and two sisters.

CHARLES CITY — Mary K. Kramer, 103, died Saturday (Jan. 9, 1999) at the Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home.

** Delbert Robert Mayo

EDMOND, Okla. — Delbert Robert Mayo, 77, died Thursday (Jan. 7, 1999) at his home in Edmond.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with the Rev. David Shogren of Wesley United Methodist Church, officiating. Military rites will be provided by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

There will be no visitation. Major-Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, is in charge of arrangements.

NASHUA — Clarence Marvin Sr., 79, died Saturday (Jan. 9, 1999) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Hauser Funeral Home.

** Helen Solberg

FOREST CITY — Helen Solberg, 85, died Saturday (Jan. 9, 1999) at the Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson, with the Rev. Perry Fruhling officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Forest City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

Helen Esther (Brones) Solberg was born on a farm west of Forest City on May 30, 1913, the daughter of Ellsworth and Ida (Halverson) Brones. She was baptized and confirmed in the Scandinavian Methodist Church in Forest City. The early part of her life was spent on farms in the rural Leland and Forest City area. She attended rural schools in Leland, Higgenbottom and Butney Township, and graduated from Forest City High School. On Sept. 13, 1933, she married Porter J. Solberg at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple farmed together in the Forest City area until 1942, when they purchased their farm northwest of Thompson. They continued to live on the farm until Porter's death on June 7, 1983. At that time, Helen purchased a house and moved to Thompson.

She was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church, enjoyed her career at the A.J. Jensen Company (Mabel's), and was an assistant 4-H leader of the Eden Farmerettes. She enjoyed her several birthday clubs and church circles, as well as being a member of the Thompson Senior Center. She enjoyed working on the farm, gardening, growing flowers, winter trips to Arizona and her family. Due to her health, she moved to Forest Haven in Forest City, and later to the Good Samaritan Center, where she died on Jan. 9, 1999, at the age of 85 years.

Helen is survived by her three children, Lowell Solberg and his wife, Marjory, of Forest City, Patricia Wightman-Fisk and her husband, Jonathan of St. Joseph, Mich., and Dianne Robinson and her husband, Dallas, of Mason City. Also surviving are nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Eleanor McConkey of Des Moines; a brother and his wife, James and Violet Brones of Forest City; three sisters-in-law, Clarice Rollefson of Forest City, Esther Brones of Palmdale, Calif., and Doris Solberg of Clear Lake.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Porter J. Solberg; infant son, David; infant daughter, Barbara; an infant grandchild; a sister, Stella Carlson Irish; and two brothers, Lloyd and Richard Brones.

** Kenlee Sue Uhlenhopp

BELMOND — Kenlee Sue Uhlenhopp, infant daughter of Kirk and Renee Uhlenhopp of Belmond, passed away Thursday (Jan. 7, 1999) at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Immanuel Reformed Church with Pastor Rob Ford officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home.

Kenlee was born on Dec. 31, 1998, at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City. Her seven days with her family brought them much love and joy. Her brief time with them will never be forgotten.

Kenlee is survived by her parents, Kirk and Renee Halfpop Uhlenhopp; two brothers, Kyle and Karter; maternal grandparents, Leland and Susan Halfpop of Belmond; paternal grandparents, Ken and Carryl Uhlenhopp of Hampton; maternal great-grandmother, Evelyn Watne of Belmond; paternal great-grandmother, Marjorie Uhlenhopp of Dumont; paternal great-grandfather, Fred Jurgena of Hampton; aunts and uncles, Rachelle Halfpop of Goodell, Kelly Johnson and her husband, Kent, of Cedar Falls; four uncles, Robert Halfpop and his wife, Debra, of Belmond, Rodney Halfpop of Garner, Ryan Halfpop and his wife, Tammy, of Rockwell, and Randy Halfpop of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and 11 cousins and numerous other relatives and a community of friends.
