** Helen G. Scott
MASON CITY — Helen G. Scott, 85, of 417 N. Van Buren Ave., died Sunday (Jan. 24, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Calvary Alliance Church, 408 N. Delaware Ave., with the Rev. David Biddle officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.
Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa or Calvary Alliance Church.
Helen G. Scott was born Sept. 2, 1913, in Floyd, the daughter of Charles and Eliza (Bush) Sibert. Helen grew up in the Floyd and Rudd areas and attended county school there also.
She married Ivan D. Scott on June 29, 1931, in Allison. Helen and Ivan lived in Mason City where she took care of many children and enjoyed crocheting, knitting, quilting and ceramics.
She is survived by her daughter, Karen Reinke, and her husband, Lynn, Geneva; a son-in-law, Robert Knowles, Manly; seven grandchildren, Rebecca Real and her husband, Kevin, Roxanne Knowles, Justine Moore and her husband, Matt, Scott Reinke and his wife, Cindy, Shelly Reinke, Shannon Reinke and his wife, Jamie, and Ryan Reinke; nine great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Stephani and Nichole Real, Emily, Andrew, Nathan and Sammy Moore and Kristy and Kelly Reinke; one sister, Mildred O'Neill, Davenport; and several nieces and nephews.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ivan, in 1992; a daughter, Janelle Knowles in 1989; three brothers, Argyl, Keith and Verl Sibert; and three sisters, Ruth Crossman, Dorothy Scott and Ruby Hillertz.
** Peter M. Stumo
NORTHWOOD — Peter M. Stumo, 88, died Friday (Jan. 22, 1999) at the Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood.
Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett, with the Rev. Selmer Hernes and Rev. Allan Stoa officiating. Burial will be in the Elk Creek Cemetery.
Visitation was held Monday at Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 South, Northwood, and will resume one hour prior to the service today at the church.
Peter M. Stumo was born Feb. 16, 1910, in Brookfield Township, Worth County, the son of Nels and Carrie (Nelson) Stumo. He was baptized and confirmed in Elk Creek Lutheran Church, Kensett, where he was a life-long member.
Peter attended rural schools in Brookfield Township. He was united in marriage to Lillian Johnson on Sept. 16, 1936. They farmed in Brookfield Township, where Peter lived his entire life. Lillian preceded him in death in 1956. Peter entered the Lutheran Retirement Home in January 1996.
He is survived by his children and their spouses, Nelson and Elnora Stumo, Goodell, John and Joan Stumo, Northwood, Judy and Mike Lee, Northwood, Paul Stumo, Clear Lake, and Elizabeth and Stan Reichl, Albert Lea, Minn.; a daughter-in-law, Marie Stumo, Northwood; two sisters, Carma Brunsvold, Manly Care Center, and Therese Havens, Mason City; sister-in-law, Julia Stumo, Northwood; 16 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lillian, his son, Lowell; his brother, Gerhard Stumo; three sisters, Nettie Stumo, Mabel Johnson and Louise Pederson; and one daughter-in-law, Verna Stumo.
Memorials may be directed to the Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood; Northwood Rescue Squad; or the Elk Creek Lutheran Church.
** Philip D. Lunstrum
MASON CITY — Philip D. Lunstrum, 73, of Mason City, died Sunday (Jan. 24, 1999) at his son's home.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. Rick Eichenlaub of First Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with full military honors conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and will continue one hour prior to services on Wednesday.
Philip D. Lunstrum was born July 8, 1925, in Forest City, the son of Paul and Genevieve (Larson) Lunstrum. He graduated from Forest City High School in May of 1942.
Philip served in the Armed Guard in the United States Navy from July 7, 1943, until March of 1946.
On Sept. 27, 1946, he was united in marriage to Bonnie R. Buland in Forest City.
He loved hobbies and crafts, being out in nature, hiking, fishing and camping. He was a lapidarist; he enjoyed cutting rocks and making jewelry.
He thought the world of his grandkids.
Philip was the past commander of V.F.W. Post No. 733 and a Sean Squirrel for the Cooties.
Survivors include his mother, Genevieve Lunstrum of Mason City; his wife, Bonnie Lunstrum of Mason City; three children, Tsgt. Lynn A. Hopper of Oklahoma City, Okla., Lori L. Vande Wall and her husband, Kevin, of Altoona and Larry Lunstrum and his wife, Kathy, of Mason City; grandchildren, Jedediah D. and Jeremiah J. Davis of Oklahoma City, Okla., Katie L. and Jared P. Vande Wall of Altoona, Kody and Chance Lunstrum of Mason City, Faith Lunstrum of Bakersfield, Calif., Jordan Lunstrum of Mason City and April and Jasmin Moody of Bakersfield, Calif.; three brothers, Ralph Lunstrum and his wife, Bennie, of Homeland, Calif., Glen Lunstrum and his wife, Betty, of Batavia, Ill., and Stanford Lunstrum and his wife, Virginia, of Verona, Wis.; one sister, Linda Everding and her husband, Richard, of Mason City; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father.
** Dorothy L. Diebold
CHARLES CITY — Dorothy L. Diebold, 78, of the Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home, formerly of 1471 Highway 18, Rudd, died Friday (Jan. 22, 1999) at the nursing home following a lengthy illness.
At Dorothy's request, her body was cremated and memorial funeral services will take place at a later date. There will be no visitation. Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City, is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Diebold, the former Dorothy Lucille Froid, was born Feb. 4, 1920, in Lyons, Neb., the daughter of Gilbert and Edna (Baker) Froid. She married Joseph Samuel Mazzollo, who preceded her in death. She then married Harry Edward Diebold, who also preceded her in death. For several years, she was a close companion of Raymond Sawyer, who also preceded her in death.
Mrs. Diebold owned and operated several restaurants during her lifetime. She had previously lived in the Chicago area before moving to the Rudd and Charles City areas.
Living family members include two daughters, Laura Gandy of Grand View, Wis., and Diana Giambelluca of Mitchellville; a brother, Franklin Froid of Cleveland, Ohio; a sister, Marian Haag, of Cleveland, Ohio; a special niece whom her parents raised, Pat Froid Wood, of Chicago, Ill.; and several grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, husbands and special friend, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Ervin and Milo Froid.
** Harley D. Throne
MASON CITY — Harley D. Throne, 71, of 2310 26th St. S. W., died Sunday (Jan. 24, 1999) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Nils C. "Chris" Hellevik officiating. Interment will be in the Kensett Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with a Moose Lodge service beginning at 7 p.m. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church Wednesday.
Memorials may be directed to the Life Care Center through the Moose Lodge.
Harley was born Dec. 5, 1927, in Worth County, the son of Ove E. and Elise (Olson) Throne. He was baptized at Deer Creek Lutheran Church and confirmed at Elk Creek Lutheran Church.
He attended rural schools in Hanlontown and graduated from Kensett High School in 1946. He spent most of his early years in the northern Iowa and southern Minnesota area.
Harley served in the U. S. Army from 1946 to 1948, stationed at Fort Ord, Calif.
He married Doris Sallee June 11, 1949, in Albert Lea, Minn. They lived on a farm near Kensett, then moved to Albert Lea where Harley worked on a turkey farm. Later they moved to Mason City where Harley worked at Jacob E. Decker and Sons and the Mason City Post Office. Harley retired from the post office in 1985 after 30 years.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he ushered for 11 years. He and Doris faithfully helped the church with the church bulletins. He was a member of the Rockwell American Legion, Albert Lea Eagles Lodge and Mason City Moose Lodge No. 1328, which he served as administrator for many years. He held the offices of Junior Governor and treasurer and was serving as state chairman for Lifecare, where they were well on their way to making the goal they had set, at the time of his death. Harley went through all the chairs of the Legion and of the Moose. He earned his fellowship and received his 100-member pin and was well on his way to signing up 150 members. Harley also enjoyed Taco Days at the Moose Lodge.
Harley is survived by his wife, Doris, of Mason City; a daughter, Terry Throne Riggan, of Marble Rock, and her special friend, Jim Holt; his grandchildren, Stacy Usher and her special friend, Dan Tree, Sheri Hillegas and husband, Ron, Lonnie Rasmus and his wife, Jasmine, Brian Westendorf and his wife, Kelly, Angela Freese and her husband, Ryan, Bob Riggan, and Todd Usher; great-grandchildren, Brandon, Preston, Kendra, Joshua, Trinity, Josh, Holden, Dakota, MaKenzii, Nick, Zach, Caitlyn and one on the way; brothers, LuVerne Throne and his wife, Edith, Raymond Throne and Lloyd Throne and friend, Vi; sisters, Arlene Johnson, Loretta Hertzog and her husband, Bob, and Talora Grosland; sisters-in-law, Anne Throne and Donna Throne; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Vicky Jean Throne; three brothers, Talford, Orville and Rolland in infancy; and a sister, Rosetta.
** Robert D. 'Buck' Suby
FERTILE — Robert D. "Buck" Suby, 74, of Fertile, died Saturday (Jan. 23, 1999) at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Fertile Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Roger G. Kampstra officiating. Interment will be in Brush Point Cemetery, Hanlontown, with military rites by Clear Lake American Legion Post No. 4868.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills, and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the Church.
Robert D. "Buck" Suby was born Oct. 28, 1924, in Worth County, the son of Henry and Iva (Kirk) Suby. He attended Fertile School and served in the Army from December of 1948 to February of 1950 in Japan. He was a lifelong member of V.F.W. Post No. 4868, Clear Lake.
He was married to Betty Jean Johnson on Sept. 29, 1951, in Mason City. He owned and operated Robert Suby Lime Spreading for many years. He retired from Worth County Road Maintenance in 1987.
He also enjoyed camping, fishing, playing cards, backgammon and having coffee at Pronto. He also enjoyed being outdoors and being with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Betty, of Fertile; and five children: two sons, Steve and his wife, Joyce Suby, of Marion, and Brad and his wife, Nancy Suby, of Fertile, and three daughters, Sheila and her husband, Mark Enderson, of Lake Mills, Brenda and her husband, Bob Jones, of Fertile, and Lisa and her husband, Mike Lacey, of Clear Lake. He also will be missed by his 11 grandchildren, Eric and Mike Suby of Clear Lake, Bob and Travis Enderson of Lake Mills, Stacy and Emily Suby of Fertile, Jessica and Vanessa Jones of Fertile and Tanner, Bryar and Jacob Lacey of Clear Lake; four brothers, Leon, Boyd and Roger, all of Mason City, and Allen, of Ankeny; three sisters, Helen Sparby, of Iowa City, Phyllis Clausen of Mason City and Linda O'Neil of Phoenix, Ariz.; along with many nieces and nephews and four aunts.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents.
** Maxine Nolte
SHEFFIELD — Maxine Nolte, 81, of Sheffield, died Thursday (Jan. 21, 1999) at the Good Samaritan Village, Sioux Falls, S.D.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Peace Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls, S.D.
Funeral services also will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 8 a.m. until time of services Wednesday at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton.
Maxine Nolte was born June 19, 1917 in Hampton.
Survivors include one son, Evan, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one brother, Jerry Lukensmeyer of Hampton.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

LAKE MILLS — Kathleen Ann Peterson, 47, of Lake Mills, died Sunday (Jan. 24, 1999) at home.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Asbury United Methodist Church, Lake Mills, with the Rev. Jeanne Martin officiating. Interment will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, Lake Mills.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills, and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.
Kathleen Ann Peterson was born July 1, 1951, in Riceville.
Survivors include her sons, John Bodenham of Mount Pleasant and Curt Bodenham of Vermillion, S.D.; and one grandson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter and her husband.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, Forest City, with the Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating. Burial will be in Madison Township Cemetery, Forest City.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home.
William A. Johnson was born July 4, 1909, in Winnebago County.
Survivors include his wife, Marie Johnson of Forest City; two sons, Robert Johnson of Forest City and Gary Johnson of Kissimmee, Fla.; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and three sisters.

CLEAR LAKE — Patrick Duane Stork, 73, of 711 12th Ave. N., Clear Lake, died Sunday (Jan. 24, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic with Monsignor Joseph J. Slepicka officiating.
Visitation will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday At Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., with a 7 p.m. scriptural wake service and a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:30 p.m.

** Dorothy M. Stephens
CLEAR LAKE — Dorothy M. Stephens, 87, of 715 N. Third St., died Friday (Jan. 22, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., with Genevieve McGowan officiating. The body was cremated and inurnment will take place in Lincoln Township Cemetery, rural Hanlontown.
Dorothy was born Oct. 27, 1911, in Fertile, the daughter of Elmer and Rena (Fankel) White. She attended school in Fertile to the fourth grade, when the family moved to Clear Lake. After receiving her high school diploma, she took a course in dressmaking, designing and tailoring through correspondence. She opened a shop in her home which she operated for many years.
On Oct. 12, 1942, she married Raymond Stephens in Clear Lake. The couple made their home with Dorothy's mother and cared for her until she died. Raymond Stephens passed away Aug. 27, 1972. No children were born.
Dorothy learned to play piano from her mother at an early age and also studied with teachers.
She is survived by six nieces and nephews, Wyn Clark of Springfield, Va., Sharon O'Neill of Goshen, Ind., Michael Rossiter of Dubuque, Renee' Kapp of Crescent, Ore., Rochell Hanhart of Bath, S.D., and Verde D. O'Neill of Lakeville, Ind.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband; and three sisters, Iris Gail White Fessenden, Floy Rachel White O'Neill and Frances Verone White Rossiter.
** Gerald Stoltz
CLEAR LAKE — Gerald Stoltz, 67, of Columbus Ohio, formerly of Clear Lake, Iowa, died Friday (Jan. 22, 1999) at the Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center in Columbus.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Kermit Roisen of Zion Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery with military honors by the Clear Lake V.F.W.
A service was held Monday at Evans Funeral Home, Columbus, Ohio.
Gerald was a retired major and navigator, a United States Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War, member of Bexley Post No. 430 American Legion, former quartermaster of V.F.W. Whitehall Post No. 8794 and a member of Whitehall Moose Lodge No. 1245.
He is survived by daughters, Janet Ponthieux of Gilbert, Ariz., and Karen Powell of Wright Wood, Calif.; grandsons, Nicholas Ponthieux and Christopher Powell; and a sister, Verlyn Tiggemann of Cass Lake, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Agnes Stoltz; and a sister, Jeanne Crossan. |

CHARLES CITY - Clarice L. Dunn, 91, a former resident of 23 Cedar Terrace S., died Tuesday (Jan. 26, 1999) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

CLEAR LAKE - Kyle Arnold Mennenga, 62, of 10 S. 15th St., Clear Lake, died Monday (Jan. 25, 1999) at home.

SHEFFIELD - Walter Boehlje, 84, of Sheffield, died Monday (Jan. 18, 1999) in a car accident at Osage Beach, Mo.
Mr. Boehlje farmed his entire life in the Sheffield area. He was an active member of the Grace Baptist Church and known for his interest in and commitment to farming, flying and education. He served on numerous boards and organizations during his lifetime.
Survivors include his wife, Delphine; three sons, Boyd Boehlje, of Pella, Michael Boehlje, of West Lafayette, Ind., and Dennis Boehlje, of Carmel Valley, Calif.; and six grandchildren, Jill Boehlje, of Glendale, Ariz., Chad Boehlje, of Pella, Todd Boehlje and Darren Boehlje, of St. Louis, Mo., and Sean Boehlje and B.J. Boehlje, of Carmel Valley, Calif.

NORA SPRINGS - George J. "Jimmy" Wilson, 51, of Nora Springs, died Monday (Jan. 25, 1999) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

George "Jimmy" Wilson was born Aug. 4, 1947, in Nora Springs, son of George Alvin and Ruby Irene (Gallup) Wilson. Jimmy made many friends while attending school in Mason City and Floyd.
Jimmy enjoyed fishing with his father, listening to music and playing ball. He loved his dog, Payless.
Survivors include his mother, Ruby Wilson, of Nora Springs; two sisters, Shirley Sandy, of Mason City, and Margery Leake, of Nora Springs; his nieces and nephews, Jocee Kelly and her husband, Oscar, of Mason City, Jay Sandy and his wife, Shelly, of Sioux City, Joni Bachman and her husband, John, of Boone, Lori Botts and her husband, Eric, of Macomb, Ill., Kathy Mahlstedt, and her husband, Ed, of Rockford, David Leake and his wife, Kim, of Nora Springs, and Amy Vosburg and her husband, Ryan, of Des Moines; and 20 great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father; one brother, Kenneth; one sister, Anne; a nephew; and a great-niece.

LAKE WALES, Fla. - Leslie T. Bisgrove, 71, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday (Jan. 24, 1999) at the Lake Wales Medical Center.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Appleton, Wis., with the Rev. David Belongea, OFM Cap., officiating. Entombment will take place at Highland Memorial Park.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Brettschneider-Trettin-Lederer Funeral Chapel, Appleton, Wis., and at the church from 10 a.m. until service time on Saturday.
Leslie T. Bisgrove was born Jan. 22, 1928, in Chicago, Ill., the son of Leslie Bisgrove and the late Verlynne (Andrews) Bisgrove. He married Carole Akstulewicz on Feb. 14, 1978, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 7, 1998, having shared 20 years together. Leslie was employed by Packaging Corp of America for 40 years, and retired in 1990. He served in the Army during World War II in Japan.
Survivors include his father, Leslie Bisgrove of Lake Wales; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Les J. and Mary Ann Bisgrove of Kenosha, Ken and Chris Bisgrove of Wausau, Brian and Beth Bisgrove of Wausau, and Neil Bisgrove of Chicago; a brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Jane Bisgrove of Palm Harbor, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Jennifer, Jessie and Samantha Bisgrove, Nicholas and Cassie Bisgrove, Allison, Amanda and Bradley Bisgrove; father-in-law and mother-in-law, William and Irene Akstulewicz of Menasha.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carole; mother, Verlynne; and a brother, Ronald.

Alice T. Meyer was born Oct. 28, 1910, in Grundy County.
Survivors include his daughters, Ruth Ammerman of Story City, and Mildred Kloetzer of Iowa Falls; a son, Raymond Meyer of Hampton; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, one brother, an infant daughter and two grandsons.

Marvin L. Shill was born July 15, 1931, in Marshall County.

MASON CITY - Marian "Babe" Andersen, 78, of 710 S. Pierce Ave., died Monday (Jan. 25, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland and the Rev. Kathy Graves, Chaplain of Hospice of North Iowa, officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. Kathy Graves conducting a 7 p.m. prayer service. There will be additional visitation one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.
Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa in her memory.
Babe was born Sept. 19, 1920, in Blue Earth, Minn., the daughter of Maurice H. and Anna (Hoveland) Andersen. They moved to Mason City when she was two weeks old. She was baptized by the Rev. Oliver Wigdahl at Trinity Lutheran Church in 1920.
They then moved to Chicago, where she received most of her formal education. She attended Moos Elementary and Tully High School in Chicago.
On April 1, 1939, she married Harry T. Andersen in Waterloo. They lived together in Mason City since their marriage. Babe worked for Jacob E. Decker and Sons Plant and then Armour, until it closed in 1975. She also worked for several retail stores in Mason City.
She was a past member of many clubs and organizations, including the V.F.W. Post No. 733, Mason City, and also of Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City, for 78 years.
She enjoyed spending time with her family and the many trips to the Mississippi river, where her son has a cabin.
She will be sadly missed by one son, Tomyas D. Andersen and his wife, Carol, of Fort Madison; three daughters, Sandy Sharp, of Mason City, Marsha Balek and her husband, Pat, of Sheffield, and Melode Balek, of Nora Springs and her special friend, Howard Lock, Mason City; 10 grandchildren, Dawn Merrick and her husband, Jim, of Owatonna, Minn., Lisa Pattschull and her husband, Ted, of Mason City, Bradley Andersen, of Denver, Colo., Todd Andersen, of Orange City, Calif., Jason Andersen and his wife, Carrie, of Thornton, Brenda Balek, and special friend, Eric Abundis, of Mason City, Christopher Balek and his wife, Abbie, of Mason City, Mike Balek, of Sheffield, Jamie and Amy Balek, of Nora Springs; four great-grandchildren, Tyler Ray Smith, Parker Pattschull, Meagan Merrick, Keelie Balek; and many nieces and nephews; one special nephew, Robert (Tyke) Imlay, of Clear Lake; and one sister-in-law, Shirley Andersen, of Mason City.

CLEAR LAKE - Patrick Duane Stork, 73, of 711 12th Ave. N., died Sunday (Jan. 24, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice In-Patient Unit, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Clear Lake, with Msgr. Joseph J. Slepicka officiating. Following the service, the body will be cremated and inurnment will take place at the Osage Cemetery at a later date.
Visitation will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. A scriptural wake service will be held at 7 p.m., followed by a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7:30 p.m.
The family suggests memorials may be given in his name.
Patrick was born July 2, 1925, in Clear Lake, the son of Michael Leo and Norma Marie (Patterson) Stork. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1943.
He served in the United States Army during World War II as a member of the 179th Infantry, 45th Division. He spent 15 months overseas in the European Theater in Italy, Germany and France. He also was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal for his service.
Following the service he returned to Clear Lake and was employed by Williams Pipeline. He worked as a pipeliner for 40 years, retiring in 1987.
On Aug. 28, 1948, Patrick married Jeannine Henderson at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Clear Lake. The couple lived in Clear Lake until retirement, when they moved to Cherokee Village, Ark. He served as a lay minister at St. Michael's Catholic Church while living in that community.
Due to Patrick's ill health, they moved back to Clear Lake in 1998 to be closer to their family.
Patrick was a 26-year member of the Clear Lake Volunteer Fire Department, serving as its fire chief for eight years. He also enjoyed membership in the Clear Lake V.F.W., Moose Lodge and Elks. He was an avid bowler.
He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Clear Lake, and a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jeannine, of Clear Lake; four children, Jay Stork and his wife, Melody, of Haywood, Calif., Jon Stork and his wife, Judy, of St. James, Minn., Kevin Stork and his wife, Janet, of St. Augustine, Fla., and Shannon Nelson of St. Paul, Minn.; eight grandchildren, Jason Stork, Ryan Stork, Shane Stork, Max Stork, Michael Stork, Sandi Stork, Wes Nelson and Sadie Nelson; and three step-grandchildren, Tricia Escobar, Liz Escobar and Natalie Escobar.

CARPENTER - Galen Naber, 57, of Carpenter, died Tuesday (Jan. 26, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter, with the Rev. Kathy Larson officiating. Burial will be in the Newberg Cemetery, Carpenter.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar.
Galen was born on Sept. 8, 1941, in Osage, to Marion and Hattie Smith Naber. He attended school in Carpenter and St. Ansgar, graduating in 1960.
He married Sheryl Tett in 1962 at the Little Brown Church, Nashua.
Galen worked all of his life in the auto and oil related businesses. He had been with Cen-Pe-Co since 1985. Galen served on the Carpenter City Council for a number of years serving most recently as mayor.
Galen loved his four grandsons, enjoying the time he spent with them. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed visiting with neighbors and friends. Galen was proud of maintaining his sobriety.
He enjoyed the outdoors with canoeing and biking. Galen liked playing cards and was devoted to the Minnesota Vikings.
Galen is survived by his wife, Sheryl, of Carpenter; one son, Kevin Naber, of Normal, Ill.; one daughter, Julie Wilson, of Mondovi, Wis.; four grandsons, Christopher, Adam and Nickolas Wilson and William Naber; one brother, Kenneth Naber, of Chickasaw, Ala.; and one sister, Janice Racel, of Roanoke, Va.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Donald.

STACYVILLE - Wilfred Jacob Gilles, 82, of Waterloo, formerly of Stacyville, died Tuesday (Jan. 26, 1999) at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Iowa City.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Visitation Catholic Church with the Rev. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial will be in Visitation Church Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Stacyville American Legion Post 569.
Visitation will begin at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Visitation Catholic Church Hall, with a rosary at 3 p.m. and a wake service at 7:30 p.m. Champion Funeral Home, Osage, is in charge of arrangements.
Wilfred Jacob Gilles was born May 5, 1916, at New Haven, the son of Roy and Theresa (Seibert) Gilles. He attended Visitation Academy and Visitation High School in Stacyville, graduating in 1935.
He became a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1938. In September 1940, he joined the National Guard, and in February 1941, was put on active duty. In 1942, Wilfred was sent to the European Theater of Operations. He saw active duty in Ireland, England, Italy, France and North Africa. He served as a cook and security guard and was honorably discharged in June 1945.
Wilfred and his twin brother, Wilmer Gilles, went into partnership operating Gilles Billiards in Garner. During his lifetime, Wilfred held positions as a chef in Clear Lake and Waterloo. In 1974, he became a security guard at the John Deere Plant in Waterloo, and he also worked for the Air National Guard at the Waterloo Airport.
Wilfred married Chrystal Burgett June 16, 1963, and they made their home in Cedar Falls. Chrystal died in June 1976.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Waterloo, and a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters.
Survivors include three brothers, Reuben Gilles and his wife, Ardella, of Austin, Minn., Dan Gilles and his wife, Gloria, of Adams, Minn., and Paul Gilles and his wife, Gertrude, of Waterloo; four sisters, Marian Johnson of Austin, Theresa Langenfeld and her husband, Greg, of Dunlap, Elizabeth Hemann, of Stacyville, and Adeline Krebsbach and her husband, Marvin, of Stacyville; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Theresa Gilles; his stepmother, Anna Gilles; his twin brother, Wilmer; and a brother, Vernon Gilles.

CLEAR LAKE - Kyle Arnold Mennenga, 62, of 10 S. 15th St., Clear Lake, died Monday (Jan. 25, 1999) at his home.

Kyle Arnold Mennenga was born July 29, 1936, in Belmond, the son of Arnold and Beryl (Hake) Mennenga. He married Virginia "Ginny" Hughes, on July 23, 1960, in Belmond.
Kyle grew up in Belmond and graduated from Belmond High School in 1955. He served in the Navy and was stationed on the East Coast.
Kyle farmed for many years in the Steamboat Rock area. He and his wife moved to California in 1984, where he did lawn maintenance. In 1991, his family returned to Iowa. Kyle enjoyed hunting, fishing and bird watching. He loved music and watching movies.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Mennenga, of Clear Lake; two children, Eva Burns and her husband, Robert, of El Centro, Calif., and Robert Mennenga and his wife, Wanda, of Radcliffe; seven grandchildren, Shannon Reinhart and her husband, Grant, of El Centro, Calif., Shaun Burns, of Clear Lake, Sharon Burns, of El Centro, Calif., Chet and Tyler Mennenga, both of Radcliffe, James Mennenga, of Steamboat Rock, and Cody Mennenga, of Radcliffe; three great-grandchildren, Lorainne and Grace Reinhart, both of El Centro, Calif., and Jason, of Clear Lake; two sisters, Verda Rothstein, of Miami, and Cheryl Aldrich, of Clarion; and many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was born July 17, 1917, in Plymouth, the daughter of Robert and Teona (Straka) Willford. She attended schools in Plymouth.
Dorothy married Ernest L. Buss on July 23, 1939, in Austin, Minn. She operated a beauty shop for 15 years out of her home.
She was a member of the Moose Lodge, enjoyed bowling in the Moose Mixed League and Wednesday Afternoon Bowling League. She also enjoyed gardening and playing cards.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Galbreath and her husband, Gentry, of Mason City; two sons, Terry L. Buss and his wife, Betty, of Mason City, and Lowell E. Buss and his wife, Dianne, of Victoria, Minn.; four grandchildren, Jeffrey and Jason Buss, and Stephanie and Christopher Galbreath.

Robert F. Hubbard was born July 16, 1915, in Waterloo, the son of Andrew L. and Margaret (Hickey) Hubbard. He married Inez M. Kloke on Oct. 11, 1939, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City.
Bob grew up in Mason City and graduated from St. Joseph Catholic School in 1933. He served in the Air Force during World War II. He started his career as a roofer and contractor and then worked in commercial construction as a millwright until retiring.
Bob loved woodworking, fishing, hunting and being outdoors. He enjoyed having morning coffee with his friends.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ducks Unlimited and the Carpenters Local 1313.
Survivors include his wife, Inez Hubbard, of Mason City; one son, Robert A. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established by her family to benefit elementary school libraries.
Born on a farm near Greene, Esther was the daughter of John William and Margaret (Montgomery) Boggs. She graduated from Ventura High School.
Esther married W. Gerald Chute at St. Joseph's Catholic Church on July 17, 1930. Together they were partners in the Thompson-O'Neil Grocery, Inc., formerly at 121 N. Federal, Mason City, until 1958. She then was employed at Dick's TV Center prior to her retirement; Esther also enjoyed knitting and needlework.
After her husband's death on April 5, 1981, Esther moved to Cedar Rapids where she did educational/civic volunteer work, until she moved to Hallmar in 1991.
Survivors include one son, Richard G. and his wife, Orrine, Cedar Rapids; one granddaughter, Lisa Anne Zweerink and her husband, Jeffrey, Morreno Valley, Calif.; one grandson, Thomas Richard and his fiancee, Amy Rikkels, Iowa City; one great-grandson, Daniel Gerald Zweerink, and one great-granddaughter, Sara Grace Zweerink, both of Morreno Valley, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one brother and one sister.

Clarice L. Campbell Parker Dunn was born Jan. 27, 1907, at Charles City.
Survivors include two sons, Melvin Parker, of Sun City, Calif., and Gerald Parker, of Charles City; and a brother, Wendle Campbell; and 11 grandchildren.

A Mass was held at 10:45 a.m. on Jan. 7, 1999, at Brophy Chapel, 4701 N. Central, Phoenix. A reception followed at the Phoenix Country Club.

She was born in Titonka, Iowa, to Dr. and Mrs. Pierre Sartor and practiced podiatry in Chicago and Charles City, Iowa.
In 1966, she became the state reference librarian upon relocating to Phoenix. Later, she joined the Department of Economic Security and retired in 1977.
Traveling the world was her greatest pleasure the past 35 years.

Melvin "Butch" Wright was born Aug. 29, 1939, in Osage, the son of Hollis and Harriet (Penney) Wright. He attended Osage schools and graduated from Osage High School in 1957.
Butch enjoyed participating in and watching sports, especially basketball, baseball, bowling and golf. He was a softball umpire for many years.
Butch was a member of the Methodist Church and AA.
He is survived by his sister, Muriel Crossley, Osage; a niece, Barbara Wright and her husband, Herb, Osage; five nephews, Douglas Olson and his wife, Linda, Waterloo, Richard Olson and his wife, Carol, Waterloo, Jeffrey Olson and his wife, Lory, Hutchinson, Minn., William Olson, Hutchinson, Minn., and James Olson, Arlington, Va.; four great nieces; and three great nephews.

PARK RIDGE, Ill. - Shirley Barker Nordskog, 71, died Thursday (Dec. 31, 1998) following a stroke on Dec. 26.
Funeral services were held Jan. 4, 1999, at Park Ridge Presbyterian Church with burial in Town of Maine Cemetery in Park Ridge.
Shirley was born Jan. 20, 1927, to Melbern and Irma (Sanborn) Barker in Little Cedar, Iowa.
In 1937 she moved with her family to Manly, where she graduated from Manly High School in 1944. She attended Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) and graduated in 1948 with a bachelor of arts degree in music education
On Jan. 4, 1948, she was united in marriage to Paul Nordskog at the Bethel Evangelical Church in Manly. While raising their family, she gave private music lessons and then taught grade school music in Park Ridge and Northbrook, Ill.
She is survived by her husband, Paul; one son, Mark and his wife, Pat, of Lakeville, Conn.; two daughters, Kayleen and her husband, Robert Scott, of East Grand Rapids, Mich., and Carol and her husband, Michael Fischer, of Lancaster, Pa.; seven grandchildren; one sister, Zola (Arnold) Garnass, of Manly; her stepmother, Virginia Barker, of Slater; and two half-sisters, Annette (Adrian) Hull, of Slater, and Betty (Carl) Foster, of Incline Village, Nev.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

MANLY - Sue Ellen Jones, 38, of Triangle Trailer Court, died Wednesday (Jan. 27, 1999) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City, after suffering an apparent heart attack at her residence.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Fullerton Patterson-James Funeral Chapel, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City. The Rev. David Anderson, pastor of St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Fullerton Patterson-James Funeral Home and one hour prior to services on Saturday.
Mrs. Jones, the former Sue Ellen Baker, was born June 15, 1960, in Iowa City, the daughter of Billy Eugene and Shirley JoAnne (LeDuc) Baker Sr. Sue attended school in Clear Lake. On July 2, 1978, she was united in marriage to Randy Joe Jones at St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mason City.
She was formerly a cook at the Manly Care Center, where she received her certification as a dietitian. She then moved to John Adams Middle School, Mason City, where she was a cook. From there she became a sprayer for Fieldstone Cabinetry in Northwood. At the time of her death, Sue was employed as an interior finisher for Winnebago Industries in Forest City. Sue was an avid fan of camping and enjoyed collecting dolls.
Those thankful for sharing Sue's life are her husband, Randy, of Manly; two daughters, Julie Jones and her fiance, Ryan Gambell, and Jennifer "Muttey" Jones, all of Manly; her mother, Shirley J. Baker, of Mason City; six brothers and sisters, Terry LeDuc and his wife, Barb, of Burchinal, Linda Crawford and her husband, John, of Plymouth, Claudine "Flip" Korpke and her husband, Jim, of Forest City, Dustie Baker of Mason City, Jeff Baker and his wife, Roxanne, of Mason City, and Billy Gene Baker Jr. and his wife, Debra, of Mason City; a grandson, Masen Gambell, of Manly; a special godchild, Jonathan Keltner; and many nieces and nephews.

BELMOND - Alfred C. Stadtlander, 83, of Belmond, entered the Kingdom of Heaven, when he died Friday (Jan. 29, 1999) at the Belmond Community Hospital, Belmond.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the United Church of Christ Congregational, Belmond, with Pastor Lynne Spencer-Smith officiating. Interment will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

Alfred C. Stadtlander, the son of Ernst and Ethel (Meyers) Stadtlander, was born on April 1, 1915, at Belmond, Iowa. He attended schools in the Belmond area and was a member of the United Church of Christ Congregational Church, in Belmond.
At a young age, he spent time doing a number of jobs that included working as a farmhand for area farmers, working with his brother, Ernie, on Highway 69 construction, and doing carpentry work for A.R. Dorr & Sons in Belmond.
On Oct. 2, 1937, he was united in marriage to LaVonne Mason, of Clarion. Unto this union, five boys and two girls were born.
After his marriage, Al held various occupations, including work as a drayman and a farmer. He made deliveries for the Fullerton Lumberyard and the Farmers Grain Elevator. Later, he was employed by the City of Belmond and the Wright County Road Maintenance until his disability in 1960.
In retirement, Al spent his time gardening and playing cards and cribbage. He also attended many school events for his children and grandchildren who were very special to him.
For the past 3 ½ years, Al had made his home at the Belmond Health Care Center, in Belmond.
Survivors include his seven children, Tom Stadtlander and his wife, Karen, of Belmond; Larry Stadtlander and his wife, Pat, of Oak Harbor, Wash.; Robert Stadtlander and his wife, Judie, of Iowa City; Janet Hennigar and her husband, Dennis, of Clarion; Richard Stadtlander, of Belmond; Jerry Stadtlander and his wife, Phyllis, of Waukee; and Marilyn TerHark and her husband, John, of New Hampton; 14 grandchildren; and five and 8/9 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, LaVonne in 1993; two brothers, Ernest and William; and a sister, Mary.

Robert W. "Bob" Hackbart was born Feb. 4, 1923, at Grafton, in Worth County, the son of Emil J. and Alvona (Wilke) Hackbart. He was baptized and confirmed April 10, 1938, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Grafton and was a lifetime member.
He attended the public school at Grafton and graduated from Grafton High School in 1942. He farmed with his father until he entered the service. He served in the United States Army from 1944 to Aug. 14, 1946. His time was spent in the South Pacific area in the Occupational Forces.
He married Loretta M. Glassel on Oct. 31, 1948 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Grafton. They lived on the Hackbart Century Farm all of their 50 years of married life. On Nov. 8, 1998, they celebrated their 50 years of wedded life. Robert retired from farming in 1988, but kept busy helping his son, Neil, farm.
Bob and Loretta were very active in the church and community, where he was a member of the Hollatz-Tabbert Legion Post No. 616, Grafton, Community Action, president of the church council and served on the Grafton school board. For many years, there has been a reunion with his three Army buddies. He was very active in high school sports, basketball and baseball and continued as an avid sports fan.
Cherishing his memory for over 50 years is his wife, Loretta, of Grafton; two sons, Lee, of Grafton, and Neil and his wife, Donna, of Grafton; two grandchildren, Jason and his fiancee, Jody Kalvig; and Amy Hackbart and her fiance, Derrick Powers; a brother, Roger Hackbart and his wife, Lucille, of Golden Valley, Minn.; a sister, Lorraine Julseth and her husband, Truman, of Northwood; a nephew, Mark Hackbart and his wife, Monica, of Roanoke, Va.; two nieces, Susan Hackbart, of Akron, Ohio, and Constance Meyer and her husband, Terry, of Urbandale; four great-nieces and nephews, Benjamin, Alex, Brittany and Alexandra; and a special pet, Spike.

MASON CITY - Wallace Clifford Allen, 89, of 1000 N. Eisenhower Ave., died Friday (Jan. 29, 1999) at the Heritage Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at First Christian Church, 318 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. Rick Eichenlaub officiating. A flag folding ceremony will be performed and "Taps" will be played at the church by members of the Mason City Memorial Association. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major-Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Wallace Clifford Allen was born on Aug. 24, 1909, to Thomas B. and Bessie (Tlam) Allen in Grinnell, and graduated from Mason City High School in 1927. Wallace lived most of his life in Mason City, and was married to Dorothy Mildred Hicks on June 23, 1931.
The family lived in Fort Dodge from 1935 to 1944, where he was employed by the H.J. Heinz Company. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1944. The family then moved to Creston where he was employed by the J.I. Case Company as an agent. In 1950, they returned to Mason City where he was employed as a territory supervisor for L.H. Schultz Co.
Wallace was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) where he was an elder, sang in the chancel choir and played in the bell choir. He served as treasurer of Claussen Warden Post 101 of the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Allen, of Mason City; two daughters, Sandra S. Ridenour and husband, Joe, of Indianapolis, Ind., and Julie C. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Linda L. Richer; a son, Jay T. Allen; a sister, Wilma; and two brothers, Ellis and Virgil.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

** Robert D. Murphy
CHARLES CITY - Robert D. Murphy, 83, died Friday (Jan. 29, 1999) at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Sunnyside Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Kelly of Maple Heights Assembly of God Church, rural Charles City, officiating. Burial, with military rites provided by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit, will be in Sunnyside Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from noon until service time on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be given to the family.
Robert D. Murphy was born Jan. 13, 1916, in Panora.
Survivors include his wife, Velma, of Charles City; two sisters, Ruth Moore of Nevada and Marjorie Steele of Oregon; and one brother, Jerold, of California.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

WATERLOO - Gertrude H. Hoots, 85, of Waterloo, formerly of Mason City, died Saturday (Jan. 30, 1999) at the Covenant Medical Center.

** Norma Stonebrook
HAMPTON - Norma Stonebrook, 83, died Saturday (Jan. 30, 1999) at Franklin General Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Grarup Funeral Home, Sheffield.
Norma Stonebrook was born April 25, 1915, in Hampton.
Survivors include three sisters, Nellie Larsen of Lakewood, Calif., Vera Hyde of Palm Beach, Fla., and Shirley Marts of Lakewood, Calif.; and one brother, Orval Marts of Hampton.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.
** Paul W. Baack
KLEMME - Paul William Baack, 81, died Friday (Jan. 29, 1999) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ with the Rev. Georgia White-Kisslring officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Tenold Funeral Home, and will continue one hour prior to service time at the church on Tuesday.
Paul William Baack was born on May 29, 1917, to Herman and Lillian (Blumer) Baack, near Klemme. He attended schools in rural Klemme, and he was baptized and confirmed at the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in Klemme.
On May 28, 1946, Paul married Darlene Wilkinson at Troy, Mo. The couple made their home near Klemme and engaged in farming.
Paul enjoyed farming, woodworking and working on cars. He had a love for nature, both the animals and plants, and he particularly liked flowers. He found great joy in his children and his grandchildren.
Those people left to cherish time spent with him are his wife, Darlene, of Klemme; daughter, Lora Carpenter and her husband, Ronald, of Mason City; son, Larry Baack of Klemme; two granddaughters, Amy Morris and her husband, Jeff, of Jacksonville, Fla., and Angela Carpenter of Mason City; two great-grandchildren, Ronnie and Jorden Morris of Jacksonville; two sisters, Ethel Kropp of Garner and Dorothy Howie and her husband, Jim, of Garner; and three brothers, Roy Baack and his wife, Berneice, of Thornton, Robert Baack and his wife, Ruth, of Britt, and Richard Baack and his wife, Jean, of Klemme.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Norma.
** Luella F. (Burkholder) Lessor
FT. MYERS, Fla. - Luella F. (Burkholder) Lessor, 85, of Fort Myers, Fla., formerly of Mason City, Iowa, died Wednesday (Jan. 27, 1999) at a hospital in Fort Myers following a stroke and heart attack.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Carl A. Ries officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Monday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a Women of the Moose memorial service beginning at 6:30 p.m., followed by a scriptural prayer service at 7 p.m.
Luella Fern Lessor was born on Sept. 1, 1913, in Oakland, Calif., the youngest daughter of Lucky Burkholder and Mabel McCaslin Burkholder. She moved to Mason City with her mother and graduated from Mason City High School in 1931, and later ran the Stanton Hotel with her mother. She married Theron I. Lessor on Nov. 2, 1940, and lived in Mason City until early 1994, when illness required that she move to Florida to be near one of her daughters.
Luella was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Women of the Moose.
She is survived by three daughters, Joan Marie Lessor of Des Moines, Karen Ann Bell of Fort Myers, Fla., and Mary Ellen Embrey of Alexandria, Va. She also has four grandchildren, Daryl Snow of Phoenix, Ariz., Tammy Jacky of northern Minnesota, Robert Stack of Fort Myers and Regina Mishkel of Alexandria, Va.; and four great-grandchildren, Branden Lee Jones of northern Minnesota, Marissa Marie Stack and Skyler Damien Stack of Fort Myers and Marcus Anthony Mishkel of Alexandria, Va. Other living relatives include three nephews, Veryl and Larry McLaughlin of Mason City and Ronald Burkholder; and three nieces, MaryLou Engitler of Britt, Cookie Bornstein of Charles City and Raejean Mundhenke of Watertown, S.D.
Luella was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Robert William Lessor in 1969; her husband, Theron I. Lessor in 1996; her brother, Ray Burkholder; and her sister, Eunice McLaughlin.
** Doris E. Diegel
NORA SPRINGS - Doris E. Diegel, 84, of 27 N. Iowa Ave., died Thursday (Jan. 28, 1999) at her home.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Pippert and the Rev. Deborah Stowers officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye, and one hour prior to the services at the church on Tuesday.
Doris E. Diegel was born at Ventura on May 8, 1914, to Charles E. and Emma (Festl) Kluver, where her father operated a general store.
In 1925, she moved to her mother's hometown, Nora Springs, where her father continued his business. She attended Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., and received her undergraduate degree from Cornell College in Mount Vernon. She attended graduate school at the University of Iowa, and received her master's degree from New York University.
She taught at the Elkader Junior College and High School. From 1940 to 1943, she taught distributive education at Lincoln Senior High School in Lincoln, Neb.
On Oct. 24, 1943, she married Calvin R. Diegel at First United Methodist Church, Nora Springs. The young couple made their home at Phoenix, Ariz., where her husband was employed as a buyer for a wholesale hardware company. In 1945, they returned to their paternal hometown and entered into business with Doris's father. In 1988, she and her husband retired from the grocery business that her father had begun in 1893.
She is survived by her son, Charles, of Nora Springs.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
