** Frederick N. Larson
DOWS — Frederick N. Larson, 59, of Duncan, formerly of Dows, died Tuesday (Jan. 19, 1999) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Palestine Lutheran Church, rural Huxley, with the Rev. Lyle Peters officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Cataldo Funeral Chapel, Garner, with a prayer service beginning at 5:30 p.m. Visitation will resume one hour prior to services at the church Saturday.
Frederick Nelson Larson was born Feb. 14, 1939, in Des Moines.
He is survived by his brother, Ron Larson, Dows; and a sister, Linda Larson, Crystal, Minn.
** Susan M. Tyler
CLEAR LAKE — Susan M. Tyler, 61, of 1409 Seventh Ave. N., died Wednesday (Jan. 20, 1999) at Muse Norris Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at St. John's Episcopal Church, Mason City. The body will be cremated.
Arrangements are incomplete at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake.
** Eileen L. Trager
GARNER — Eileen L. Trager, 65, died Monday (Jan. 18, 1999) at her home.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kay Hooper officiating. Interment will be at Amsterdam Township Cemetery, Goodell.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, Garner.
Eileen Lorraine Trager, the daughter of Ira W. and Wava O. (Wilson) Langlitz, was born July 24, 1933, at Goodell. She attended school at Goodell and graduated from Goodell High School in 1951.
After graduating from Hamilton Business College, Mason City, she worked in Clarion for the Wright County Auditor. Her next bookkeeping position was with General Mills in Belmond.
On June 10, 1956, she was married to Myron Trager at the United Methodist Church, Goodell.
In 1961 she took a job in Goodell working with the very first We 3 Grocery Store. In 1965 the family moved to Minneapolis. In 1969 the family moved to Garner and Eileen went to work for ARCO Fertilizer in Goodell. On Feb. 2, 1972, she began working at the Farmer's Cooperative Society in Garner until retiring on June 30, 1995. Eileen enjoyed her family, bowling and singing.
She was an active member of the United Methodist Church, where she was treasurer, chairman of the Rebecca Circle and sang in the church choir. She was a charter member of the Wa-Tan-Ye and held every office since the club's formation in 1977. She also was a member of Sweet Adelines.
She is survived by her children, Becky Tvedt and her husband, Jan, and their children, Taylor and Tannyn, of Britt. and Stacey Trager and her son, Michael, of Britt; her parents, Ira and Wava Langlitz, of Goodell; three brothers, Larry Langlitz and his wife, Gail, of Goodell, Kenneth Langlitz of Goodell, and William Langlitz and his wife, Sherry, of Garner; an uncle, Forrest Langlitz, of Klemme; a sister-in-law, Karen Bach and her husband, Max, of Gilman; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and all of their families.
Eileen was preceded in death by her husband, Myron G. Trager, Jan. 21, 1990, and an infant son, John Ira Trager.
** Paul F. Meyer
ROCKWELL — Paul F. Meyer, 84, of 5756 Thrush Ave., died Tuesday (Jan. 19, 1999) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Rockwell, with the Rev. Ronald Bolinger officiating. Interment will be at the Rockwell Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. at Fullerton Funeral Home, Rockwell, with the family present to greet friends from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Visitation will resume after 9 a.m. Friday and one hour prior to services at the church.
Paul was born one of two sons to George and Lydia (Bokmeyer) Meyer in Sheffield. He was baptized on Oct. 4, 1914, and confirmed on Aug. 28, 1927, in Sheffield. He graduated from the Sheffield High School in 1932.
Paul was united in marriage to Marie Liekweg on Nov. 15, 1936, at St. John's Lutheran Church rural Sheffield. To this marriage were born three sons. They lived in Sheffield for one year and then moved to a farm near Rockwell in 1938, where he continued his grain and livestock operations.
Paul was very active at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, spending 40 years teaching Sunday School children until he was 80 years old. He also was the superintendent for many years. His love of teaching children was a replacement for being unable to attend college and being a public school teacher. Paul shared his life with others, serving on the church board, with the Brotherhood men's group, serving 10 years as the chairman of the Farmers Coop Society board of Rockwell, as a current member of the Farm Bureau, and on the nursing home board for 18 years.
Paul was an exceptional light bulb salesman, winning first in sales for several years at the Rockwell Lion's club, of which he was a charter member. He also served on the Cerro Gordo County School Board. He spent time with, and had a special place in his heart for, his grand and great-grandchildren, even taking the plunge at teaching them how to drive. His interest in reading leaned toward history and religious topics, and his hobby other than work was his notable 1972 green Buick. His twinkling eye as he shared stories with his friends and family will long be remembered. His presence was welcome at the many community social events and gatherings that he and Marie attended.
Those thankful to share Paul's life include his wife of 62 years, Marie; his three sons and daughters-in-law, David and Sharon Meyer, Mason City, Kenneth and Linda Meyer, Rockwell, and Donald and Sandi Meyer, Clive; nine grandchildren, Kim Platts, Susan, Philip and Penny Meyer, Wendy and her husband, Doug Jorgensen, Schelly Meyer, David Meyer and his fiancee, Julie Quam, Melissa and her husband, Dave Slocum, and James Meyer and his fiancee, Jodi Stouffer; five great-grandchildren, Kari Platts, the twins, Melissa and Michael Piper, Lisa and Anne Jorgensen; and one brother, Marvin Meyer and his wife, Anna Mae, Sheffield; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter, Lisa Meyer.

CHARLES CITY — Mary (Mrs. Dick) Hinman, 71, of Centerville, formerly of Charles City, died Wednesday (Jan. 20, 1999) at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City.
** John S. Rothamel
MASON CITY — John S. Rothamel, 76, of 2005 S. Monroe Ave., died Wednesday (Jan. 20, 1999) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.
A funeral Mass will be held at noon Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Michael Schueller officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, with flag folding ceremony conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.
Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with a scriptural prayer service beginning at 7 p.m.
John Samuel Rothamel was born April 30, 1922, in Wesley, son of Nicholas and Rose (Hargenrater) Rothamel.
He married Fern M. Nodtvedt on Aug. 17, 1944, in Mason City.
John graduated from Kensett High School in 1941. He served in the Army-Air Corps during World War II and then served in the Air Force Reserves, retiring as a major. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1951 and then taught at the Mason City and Charles City High Schools for seven years. John then taught in the Business Department at Mason City Junior College and North Iowa Area Community College. He also served as Administrator of North Iowa Area Community College for 10 years before retiring in 1986.
John enjoyed spending time with his friends and retirees at NIACC and following the stock market. He loved being with his grandchildren.
John was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the VFW, and the Mason City High School Junior Achievement Club.
John is survived by two sons, John A. Rothamel and his wife, Mary Ann, Superior, Wis., and Thomas D. Rothamel, Mason City; two grandchildren, Jeffrey J. Rothamel and Jennifer A. Rothamel, both of Superior, Wis.; two sisters, Rose Sallee, Mason City, and Gerry Lansing and her husband, Leonard, Mason City; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Fern; his son, Anthony; three brothers, Nicholas, Peter, and Alex Rothamel; and four sisters, Barbara Burtis, Mary Boyle, Katherine Van Hooser, and Ann Moss. |

** Grace E. Hammel
GREENE — Funeral services for Grace E. Hammel, 86, of 214 S. First, Greene, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene, with the Rev. A.C. Wegner, of the Faith Bible Chapel, officiating. Burial will be in the Lowell Cemetery in Clarksville.
Visitation will be held 4 to 8 p.m. today and one hour before services at the Chapel.
Grace Ellen Wilcox was born Aug. 12, 1912, in rural Butler County, a daughter of David and Elizabeth (Cadam) Wilcox; and died Thursday (Jan. 21, 1999) at the Liebe Care Center, in Greene.
She received her education at the Union School near Clarksville and graduated from the Clarksville High School in 1929. As a young lady, she kept house for her father until her marriage to Theodore R. Hammel on Sept. 5, 1937 at the Methodist Church in Waverly.
Following their marriage, they moved to Greene and to this union was born one daughter. Grace worked for several businesses in the Greene area until her retirement.
She was a member of the Faith Bible Chapel in Charles City.
Her interests included gardening, and cooking for family and friends. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye Basketball Fan and enjoyed the company of her cat, Muffin.
Living family members include her daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Rich Lynch, of St. Libory, Neb.; and three grandchildren, Jeff, Jenna and Michael Lynch.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Mattie Stopplemoor and Mary Whiteside; and three brothers, King, Pat, and Shorty Wilcox.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Grace E. Hammel Memorial Fund in care of her family.
** Mike M. Dosen
MASON CITY — Mike M. Dosen, 86, of 648 S. Polk Place, died Thursday (Jan. 21, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Frederick J. Wood of Bethlehem Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery, with Military honors (flag presentation and taps) by the Mason City Memorial Association.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today and until time of services on Saturday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.
Memorials may be given to the Mike Dosen Memorial Fund.
Mike M. Dosen was born July 12, 1912, in Omaha, Neb., to George and Sophie (Schorak) Dosen. At a young age, his family relocated to Mason City and he attended Mason City Schools. Mike served in the U.S. Army from 1942 through 1945.
He returned to Mason City after the service and began working as a Mason City Fire Fighter, a position he held for 27 years until retirement. He then worked for the Mason City Police Department until his final retirement at the age of 65.
Mike was a member of the Disabled Veterans Association.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and doing yard work, as well as growing his flowers and working with his hands. He will be remembered as a great story teller, he enjoyed telling true stories of his life.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys Dosen; daughter, Kristine Van Wert; son, Michael Dosen; and daughter, Kathy Clapper; granddaughter, Michele; great grandson, Hunter; and sister, Anne Pudin.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Nick; and sister, Dorothy.
** Susan Malinda Tyler
CLEAR LAKE — Susan Malinda Tyler, 61, of 1409 Seventh Ave. N., Clear Lake, died Wednesday (Jan. 20, 1999) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit of North Iowa, Mason City.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. John's Episcopal Church, 120 First St. N.E., Mason City, with Father Robert Towner officiating. The body has been cremated. Following the Memorial service, the family will meet in the Parish Hall to greet friends and share memories.
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Susan Tyler Memorial Fund.
Susan was born Oct. 4, 1937, in Belmond, Iowa, the daughter of Galen and Kathryn (Shannon) Hauge.
She attended school in Hayfield and graduated in 1955 and then attended Hamilton Business College in 1956.
She worked at Allied Mills as executive secretary to the general manager for two years.
Susan married John Tyler in 1958, and to this marriage, three sons were born. Susan attended and graduated from I.A.C.C.C. in Fort Dodge as a registered nurse. She traveled for 10 years as a traveling nurse. In 1991, she became a staff nurse at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in the prison ward and PVS unit. She returned to Iowa in 1993 due to poor health and has enjoyed her family, friends, church and many hobbies since that time.
Susan is a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Mason City, Iowa.
"Susan has gone to her Heavenly Home."
Susan is survived by her three sons, William G. Tyler, Tim Tyler and his wife, Christi, and Rod Tyler and his wife, Veronica, all of Clear Lake; her mother, Kathryn Koch, of Clear Lake; her brothers, Gary Hauge and his wife, Merilouise, of Ocala, Fla.; and Anthony Hauge, of Clear Lake; and her sister, Cynthia Wolfram and her husband, Robert, of Ventura.
She was preceded in death by her father.
** James Warn Hickle
MANLY — James Warn Hickle, 81, of 3694 Orchid Avenue, Manly, died Wednesday (Jan. 20, 1999) at the Manly Care and Rehabilitation Center.
His body was cremated. There will be no visitation. Private family graveside services will be held at a later date at Manly Cemetery.
James Warn Hickle was born Jan. 23, 1917, in Granite Falls, Minn., son of Alvin and Gertrude (Arts) Hickle. He married LeAngell "Mary" Buttolph on Dec. 28, 1942, in Osage.
Jim enjoyed fishing and riding horses. He and his wife farmed and he worked at Jacob E. Deckers Meat Plant for 27 years, retiring in 1975. He spent most of his life in the Mason City, Portland and Manly areas.
Survivors include three sons, Gary Hickle and his wife, Judy, of Floyd, Terry Hickle and his wife, Rochell, of Council Bluffs, and Berry Hickle and his wife, Connie, of Manly; five grandchildren, Curtis Hickle and his wife, Tracy, of Spokane, Wash., Nathan, of Denison, Tamara Hickle, of Fort Madison, Lindsay Hickle, student at ISU of Ames, and Cody Hickle, of Manly; and one brother, Robert Hickle, of Phoenix, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Dora Putman and Grace Williams; and one brother, Oscar Hickle.
Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, is in charge of arrangements.
** Valerie Ann Hrubes
MESA, Ariz. — Valerie Ann Hrubes, 29, of Mesa, Ariz., died Jan. 2, 1999 from injuries as a result of an accident.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 8, 1999, at the Falconer Funeral Home, Gilbert, Ariz., with Pastor Tom Anderson officiating. Burial was in the City of Mesa Cemetery, Mesa, Ariz.
Valerie was born April 5, 1969 in Troy, N.Y.
She is survived by her husband, Christopher; son, Avery; and her parents, brother and his wife, from New York. Chris' parents are Richard 'Dick' and Jane Hrubes and brother, Jeremy, of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Mason City. Chris' grandparents are Dean and Doris Goll and the late Raymond and Darlene Hrubes, of Garner.
Three-year-old Avery, who was also injured in the accident, is in stable condition at the Phoenix Children's Hospital. Memorials for Valerie may be sent to the Phoenix Children's Hospital, 1111 E. McDowell, Phoenix, Ariz. 85015.
** Susan McBurney
FOREST CITY — Susan McBurney, 87, of Forest City, died Thursday (Jan. 21, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the South Oak Grove Cemetery in Stuart.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, Forest City.
Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa in her memory.
Susan McBurney was born March 6, 1911, in Victor.
Survivors include her husband, John Kenneth McBurney, of Forest City; two daughters, Beth Oleson, of Forest City and Mary Thornton McNally, of Board Camp, Ark.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Ernst, of Grinnell; and one brother, Jean Hempstead, of Ames.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

FOREST CITY — Marian J. Hauge, 73, of Forest City, died Thursday (Jan. 21, 1999) at the Good Samaritan Center, Forest City.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the West Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Leland, with the Rev. Dan Christensen officiating. Burial will be in West Prairie Lutheran Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, Forest City.
Memorials may be given to Good Samaritan Center in Forest City; West Prairie Lutheran Building Fund, and Alzheimers Association in her memory.
Marian J. Hauge was born Dec. 28, 1925 in Fenton.
Survivors include her husband, Byron Hauge, of Forest City; one son, Terry Hauge, of Forest City; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one brother, James Widdel, of Chester, Va.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

LAKOTA — Marion Dontje, 76, of Lakota, died Thursday (Jan. 21, 1999) at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester.

HAMPTON — Leonard A. Miller, 85, of Hampton, died Wednesday (Jan. 20, 1999) at Franklin General Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hampton, with the Rev. Jon Anderson officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Decorah Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton.
Leonard A. Miller was born March 12, 1913, in Jasper, Minn.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Miller, of Hampton; two sons, Edward Miller, of Janesville, Wis. and Lee Miller, of Garner; three daughters, Jane Grundmeier, of Hinckley, Minn., Mary Kramer, of Des Moines, and Anne Paullus, of Marshalltown; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Aurelia Mains, of Pipestone, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son and two brothers.

** Roger L. Best
CLEAR LAKE — Roger L. Best, 62, of 10153 Grouse Ave., Clear Lake, died Thursday (Jan. 21, 1999) at his home after losing his battle with cancer over the past year.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Kermit Roisen officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., and begins at 9 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. on Monday and one hour before services on Tuesday at the church.
The family suggests memorials to the Roger L. Best Memorial Fund.
Roger LeRoy Best was born June 25, 1936 at the family's rural Belmond home. He was the youngest of four children of Ray C. and Ella (Kurtz) Best. When he was nine-years-old, the family moved to the farm near Burchinal. He attended rural school and Clear Lake High School, graduating in 1954.
On Jan. 20, 1956, he married JoAnn Lenning at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, Iowa. They have one daughter, Kathy Ann. They farmed all their married life together, raising grain and livestock. Roger also worked at several "second jobs" including Allied Mills, Sinclair Chemicals and American Crystal Sugar.
His hobbies were playing "500" and also enjoyed going to auctions and visiting with his many friends.
He was a member of the Cerro Gordo County Farm Bureau and Mt. Vernon Township DD Trustee.
He is survived by his wife, Jo Best, of Clear Lake; daughter, Kathy Sinnwell and her husband, Dave, of Mason City; his brother, Don Best and his wife, Mary, of Rockwell; sister, Dorothy Scheffel and her husband, Ed, of Mason City; nephews Bob and Dennis Dawson; nieces Diane Cornick and Lori Beatty; great-nephews, Kiefer and Kaleb Cornick.
He was preceded in death by his parents; nephew, Dale Best; sister, Velma Dawson and her husband, Earl Dawson.

** Marian Elaine Dontje
LAKOTA — Marian Elaine Dontje, 76, of Lakota, died Thursday (Jan. 21, 1999) at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the School Gym, Lakota, with Lyle Schobel, Bruce VanStelto and Bryan Hansen reading.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Winter Funeral Home, 414 First St. N.W., Buffalo Center.
Marian Elaine Dontje was born Sept. 27, 1922 near Buffalo Center.

MASON CITY — Karen Marie Berding Contois, 48, of Mason City, died Friday (Jan. 22, 1999) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Covenant Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Richard Murray officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., and one hour prior to services on Tuesday at the church.
Karen M. Berding Contois was born March 18, 1950, in Mason City, the daughter of Alvin H. and Irene J. (Grekoff) Berding. Karen was confirmed at the First Covenant Church, Mason City. She attended college in Iowa Falls and in Decorah for 3½ years.
Karen was employed as a salesperson and a buyer at several clothing stores in Minneapolis. She also enjoyed working as a radio announcer for KRIB on a Saturday morning radio show.
Karen enjoyed playing the piano. She loved to shop, visit with friends and travel. She wrote poetry and placed in an international contest for poetry in New York City. She was a very active person and will be dearly missed by all.
Those left to cherish her memory are her parents, Alvin and Irene Berding, of Mason City; four brothers, Ken Berding and his wife, Pam, of Mason City, Jerry Berding and his wife, Linda, of Zumbrota, Minn., Gary Berding, of Des Moines, and Ron Berding and his wife, Wanda, of Manly; her son, Everett Contois, of Minnesota; and one granddaughter, Devonna Contois, of Minnesota; seven nieces and nephews, Kenny James Berding, Eric Berding, Jason Berding, Rob Berding, Karri Berding, Rachel Berding, and David Berding; and two great-nephews, Alex and Seth Berding.
She was preceded in death by her aunt, Bertha "Betty" Rippen.

FREDERICKSBURG — Hubert C. Ellison, 76, of Fredericksburg, died Thursday (Jan. 21, 1999) at St. Joseph's Community Hospital, New Hampton.

Hubert C. Ellison was born Sept. 3, 1922, on the family farm east of Fredericksburg.

** Ivy Gunsolus
STOUGHTON, Wis. — Ivy Gunsolus, 102, died Thursday (Jan. 21, 1999) at the Skaalen Sunset Home in Stoughton.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Calvary Evangelical Free Church, 2200 Lincoln Ave., Stoughton, with the Rev. Jerry E. Cellan officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Stoughton.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the service today at the church.
Memorials may be directed to Calvary Evangelical Free Church in memory of Ivy Gunsolus.
Ivy Gunsolus, the former Ivy McKee, was born Feb. 18, 1896, in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of the late Agnes (Holub) and Sam McKee. She attended schools in Mason City and teachers college at Iowa Normal (now the University of Northern Iowa). She taught kindergarten and special education in Mason City.
Ivy was married to E. McKee Gunsolus of Stoughton on July 6, 1920. They resided in the Stoughton area.
She is survived by her son, Elton (Luella) Gunsolus, Stoughton; two grandsons, Steven Gunsolus, Stoughton, and Dr. Jeffrey (Karla) Gunsolus, Maplewood, Minn.; a great-granddaughter, Alyssa Ivy Gunsolus; a great-grandson, Ian Gunsolus; and great-nieces, nephews and many friends and neighbors.
Ivy was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Jim McKee; a sister, Vera Maynard; and her husband, E. McKee Gunsolus, who passed away in 1955.

Peter M. Stumo was born Feb. 16, 1910, in Brookfield Township, Worth County, the son of Nels and Carrie (Nelson) Stumo. He was baptized and confirmed at Elk Creek Lutheran Church, Kensett, of which he was a life-long member.
Peter attended rural schools in Brookfield Township. He was united in marriage to Lillian Johnson on Sept. 16, 1936. They farmed in Brookfield Township where Peter lived his entire life. Lillian preceded him in death in 1956. Peter entered the Lutheran Retirement Home in January 1996.
He is survived by his children and their spouses, Nelson and Elnora Stumo, Goodell, John and Joan Stumo, Northwood, Judy and Mike Lee, Northwood, Paul Stumo, Clear Lake, and Elizabeth and Stan Reichl, Albert Lea, Minn.; a daughter-in-law, Marie Stumo, Northwood; two sisters, Carma Brunsvold, Manly Care Center, and Therese Havens, Mason City; sister-in-law, Julia Stumo, Northwood; 16 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lillian, his son, Lowell; his brother, Gerhard Stumo; three sisters, Nettie Stumo, Mabel Johnson and Louise Pederson; and one daughter-in-law, Verna Stumo.
Memorials may be directed to the Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood, Northwood Rescue Squad or Elk Creek Lutheran Church.
** Lyle L. Nerlien
CURLEW — Lyle Leonard Nerlien, 77, died Saturday (Jan. 23, 1999) at the Parc Hall Nursing Home, Emmetsburg.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mallard with the Rev. Ed Brandt officiating. Burial will be in Rush Lake Cemetery with military graveside honors by members of Mallard American Legion Post No. 345.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Schellhammer Harris Funeral Home, 101 S. Fourth St., Mallard, and one hour prior to the time of the service Wednesday at the church.
The family has requested that memorial contributions be made in his menory.
Lyle was born on May 8, 1921, the son of Edmund and Olga (Lehaven) Nerlien, in Tuttle, N. D. He was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mallard on May 10, 1953.
Lyle was inducted into the United States Army on Sept. 2, 1942, serving overseas during World War II until his honorable discharge on Nov. 9, 1945.
He was united in marriage to Judy Tweten on July 2, 1946, in Moorhead, Minn.
For 31 years, he worked for the M & St. L and the Chicago Northwestern Railroad as a depot agent. His time was spent mostly in Curlew until his retirement. He also was the sheriff in Curlew for several years and worked for the Iowa Power Company.
He enjoyed helping his neighbors and woodworking, but his great love and enjoyment was his family and grandchildren. Lyle also had a great sense of humor.
Lyle was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mallard and served as Sunday school treasurer at the church for many years. He was a City Council member for several years in Curlew, a member of the American Legion and also a Curlew volunteer fireman for seven years.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 52 years, Judy Nerlien, Curlew; three sons, Lanny Nerlien, Champaign, Ill., Michael Nerlien, Burnsville, Minn., and Gary Nerlien and his wife, June, Northwood; seven grandchildren, Kari Lamb and her husband, Jared, Jacksonville, Ill., Matthew Nerlien, Champaign, Ill., Daniel Nerlien, Minneapolis, Christopher Nerlien, Burnsville, Minn., Jennifer Wahl and her husband, Rusty, Northwood, and Adam and Justin Nerlien, both of Northwood; two great-granddaughters, Nicole and Abigail Wahl, Northwood; three sisters, Edna Pforr, Hamberg, N. D., Eva Alsaker, Coon Rapids, Minn., and Venoie Bergrud and her husband, Dennis, Sheyenne, N. D.; several nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and nine brothers and sisters, Arthur, Norman, Donald, LeRoy, Vernon, Marvin and Lester Nerlien and Bonnie Proefrock and Shirley Mithune.
Blessed be his memory as he will be sadly missed and fondly remembered.

WODEN — Calvin Kurtzleben, 74, died Saturday (Jan. 23, 1999) at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Woden, with the Rev. Arlen Lloyd officiating. Interment will be in Bingham Township Cemetery, south of Woden. Military rites will be conducted by members of the Woden Veterans Ceremonial Unit.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, Woden, with a prayer service beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Calvin Jacob Kurtzleben, the son of Jacob and Katherine (Korte) Kurtzleben, was born Dec. 14, 1924, on a farm east of Woden. He attended school at Woden where he graduated from high school in 1942.
He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. On Oct. 16, 1951, he married Harriet Boeckholt at Ramsey Reformed Church near Titonka. They farmed east of Woden all of their married life. Calvin enjoyed gardening, farming and his grandchildren.
Calvin was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where he was past president of the congregation, an elder and a deacon. He served on the Woden-Crystal Lake School Board and numerous county boards. He also was a member of the Woden American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Harriet, of Woden; seven children, Lynnora Jetter and her husband, John, of Bozeman, Mont., Ruth Buns and her husband, Bradley, of Woden, Rita Compton and her husband, Mike, of Jefferson, John Kurtzleben and his wife, Emogene, of Titonka, Paul Kurtzleben and his wife, Donna, of Orange City, Bryon Kurtzleben and his wife, Kathy, of Forest City, and James Kurtzleben and his wife, Jeri, of Cedar Rapids; 14 grandchildren; three sisters, Frances Bruns and her husband, Bruno, of Britt, Katherine Kurtzleben of Titonka and JoAnn Hobbs of Hampton; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Johanna Kurtzleben; and a brother, Harm Kurtzleben. |
