** Lawrence Truman Levorson

LAKE MILLS — Lawrence Truman Levorson, 69, died Wednesday (Jan. 13, 1999) at Muse Norris Hospice Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Lake Mills Evangelical Synod Church, with the Rev. Alf Merseth officiating. Interment will be in Lake Mills Evangelical Synod Cemetery. Military rites will be performed by Lake Mills Legion - Otto/Chose Post No. 235.

Visitation was held Friday at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills, and will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Lawrence Truman Levorson was born Nov. 3, 1929, in Lake Mills.

He is survived by his wife, Anita Levorson, and his daughter, Laura, of Lake Mills; two sisters, Virginia Levorson and Norma Peterson, both of Lake Mills; and a brother, Harlan Levorson, of Lake Mills.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents.

** Elmer Garrels

DUMONT — Elmer Garrels, 75, of rural Dumont, died Friday (Jan. 15, 1999) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Dumont United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Robert Connor and the Rev. Patricia Connor officiating. Burial will be in the Dumont Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Dumont.

Elmer Garrels was born July 22, 1923, in rural Butler County.

Survivors include his wife, Miriam Garrels, rural Dumont; two sons, Michael Garrels, of Laurel and Brian Garrels, of Emmetsburg; two daughters, Elgene Bazyn, of Henry, Ill., and Jennifer Garrels, of Altoona; one sister, Esther Busma, of Dumont; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

** Fern Louella Adams

CORWITH — Fern Louella Adams, 91, of Corwith, died Friday (Jan. 15, 1999) at the Westview Care Center, Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, Corwith, with the Rev. Linda Hansen Bibb officiating. Burial will be in Corwith Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Corwith.

Fern Louella Adams was born on June 18, 1907, at Albia.

Survivors include her children, John Adams Jr., Cathern Meyer and Betty Nall, all of Corwith; and Dorothy Gifford, of Carrollton, Texas; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one brother, Clifford Bettis, of Waterloo; and one sister, Lillian Franz, of Colfax.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two granddaughters, one great-granddaughter, six brothers and three sisters.

** Wayne L. Bigelow

MASON CITY — Wayne L. Bigelow, 90, formerly of 9 Quincy Terrace, died Wednesday (Dec. 23, 1998) at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Des Moines.

Funeral services are tentatively set for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday and will continue from 9 a.m. until time of services on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Other arrangements are incomplete at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City.

BANCROFT — Paul Menke, 31, of Tulsa, Okla., died Friday (Jan. 15, 1999) at Tulsa, as the result of a car accident.

** Orville Tweeten

FOREST CITY — Orville Tweeten, 78, of Forest City, died Friday (Jan. 15, 1999) at Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Forest City, with the Rev. David Samuelson officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Forest City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark, Forest City.

Orville Tweeten was born March 3, 1920 in Ellington Township, Hancock County.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda Tweeten, of Forest City; three daughters, Ann Gerdes, of Forest City, Linda Tweeten, of Goodell, and Janet Richards, of Des Moines; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Arlene Grimm, of Davenport, and Katherine Larson, of Tucson, Ariz.; and one brother, Lehman Tweeten, of Forest City.

He was proceeded in death by his parents and one brother.

** Richard Lee Carpenter

BOONEVILLE — Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, at the Fisher-Aldrich Funeral Home, Waukee, for Richard Lee Carpenter, 58, of Booneville. The Rev. Tim Johnson officiated and burial was in the Booneville Cemetery. He died of cancer on Dec. 31, 1998, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Visitation was held on Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999 at the Fisher-Aldrich Funeral Home.

He was born on Oct. 7, 1940, at Dows, to Elmer Wallace and Caroline Alice (Bennewitz) Carpenter. He attended school in Clarion.

Mr. Carpenter married Patricia Campbell on Dec. 14, 1968, in Adel. He had lived in Waukee before moving to Booneville 28 years ago. He was a metal fabricator for Mid-Iowa Solid Waste Equipment Co. in Johnston before his death.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War and went to school at the Great Lakes Naval Base from 1961 through June of 1968.

He was a member of George A. Aldinger Post 183 American Legion of Hampton.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia, of Booneville; a son, Kevin, of Booneville; two brothers, Wallace, of Dows, and Carl, of Dallas Center; three sisters, Karen (Lowell) Gaulke, of Mt. Pleasant, Kathy (Martin) Wearda, of Hampton, and Arlis (Jerry) Mapes, of Swan.

Other family members and friends came from Dallas, Texas, Cottage Grove, Minn., Apple Valley, Minn., Hannibal, Mo., Mitchellville, Madrid, Johnston, Swan, Dallas Center, Sturat, Grimes, Hampton, Des Moines, Van Meter, Booneville, Waukee, and Adel, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

** Mildred 'Polly' Wiltsie Livingston

MASON CITY — Mildred "Polly" Wiltsie Livingston, 83, of 317 8th St. S.E., died Friday (Jan. 15, 1999) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Arrangements are incomplete at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City.

** E. G. 'Ben' Bailey

BELMOND — E. G. "Ben" Bailey, 89, of Belmond, died Friday (Jan. 15, 1999) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, Belmond, with Pastor Celestyne DeVance officiating. Interment will be in Lincoln Township Cemetery, Zearing.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Tenold Funeral Home in Belmond and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

E. G. "Ben" Bailey, the son of Clyde and Elsie (Moore) Bailey, was born June 13, 1909, in Zearing. Ben attended and graduated from Zearing High School.

He was united in marriage to Delilah Bucy at the home of Delilah's parents in Hubbard, Iowa, on Dec. 3, 1932. They first made their home in Des Moines, then Fort Dodge for 12 years, and Marathon for 12 years, before coming to Belmond 40 years ago.

He was an International Harvester parts manager employed by Helland & Long Implement.

Ben was an avid sports fan who enjoyed watching baseball, playing golf and, especially, watching girls softball.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, in Belmond, and was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Delilah, of Belmond; daughters, Diane Anderson and her husband, Gordon, of Belmond, and Marcia Holder and her husband, Wayne, of Leon; four grandsons, Scott Anderson and his wife, Carrie, of Cedar Rapids, Kevin Anderson and his wife, Debra, of Nampa, Idaho, Todd Anderson and his wife, Faith, of Cedar Rapids, Mark Dorr and his wife, Tonia, of Leon; three stepgrandsons, Steve Holder, of Greenfield, Scott Holder, of Altoona, and Spencer Holder, of Greenfield; and seven great-grandchildren, Christopher and Chloe Door, Nolan, Rosalyn, Spencer, Riley and Izaac Anderson.

Preceding him in death were his parents; brother, Carroll; and sister, Cleo.

** Florence M. Maxson

GREENE — Florence M. Maxson, 94, of Greene, died Friday (Jan. 15, 1999) at the Liebe Care Center, Greene.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Greene, with Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday at Reid's Funeral Chapel, in Greene, with a scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m. followed by a rosary service conducted by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

Florence Madalene Nettleton was born Oct. 29, 1904, in rural Coldwater Township, Butler County.

Survivors include one daughter, Jeri McMahon, of Fort Gibson, Okla.; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; and one sister, Ceil Maxson, of Greene.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two sons, parents, two sisters and three brothers.

GREENE — Lavon L. Steere, 79, of Greene, died Friday (Jan. 15, 1999) at the Liebe Care Center, in Greene.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Greene, with the Rev. Lance Kittleson officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Reid's Funeral Chapel, Greene, with the family receiving friends from 5 to 9 p.m. There will be a public scripture service at 7:30 p.m. at the chapel. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Lavon Lucille Reed was born Aug. 11, 1919, in rural Chapin, Franklin County.

Survivors include her husband, Leo "Curly" Steere, of Greene; one daughter, Nancy Hadley, of Slater; two sons, Jim and Les, both of Greene; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mabel Christensen, of Klemme, Vera Puhl, of Charles City, Arlene Puhl and Ruby Hobert, both of Greene.

She was preceded in death by two sons, her parents, two sisters and four brothers.

** Florence M. Maxson

GREENE —Florence M. Maxson, 94, died Friday (Jan. 15, 1999) at the Liebe Care Center, Greene.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene with Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Greene.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, Greene, where there will e a scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m. followed by a rosary service conducted by the Catholic Daughters of America.

Florence Madalene Nettleton was born Oct. 29, 1904, in rural Coldwater Township, Butler County, a daughter of Frank Joseph and Hannah Ita (McDermott) Nettleton, and died Friday (Jan. 15, 1999) at the Liebe Care Center, Greene.

She attended rural schools until 1914 when the Sacred Heart Academy was built. She graduated from the Academy in 1922. During this time she studied and became an accomplished violinist. She worked for Claude Rex as a telephone operator. Later she was bookkeeper for Bert Clark Mfg. Co. and later at the Frudden Lumber Company both in Greene.

On May 6, 1933, she was united in marriage to Lyle Leo Maxson at St. Joseph Rectory in Mason City. To this union were born three children: Jeri, Richard and Ronald. They made their home in Greene until her husband’s death on Feb. 18, 1996, when she entered the Liebe Care Center.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, St. Lucy’s Circle, Catholic Daughters of America and was a former Grand Regent of the Catholic Daughters. Her interests were knitting, crocheting, crewel and needle point. She also enjoyed playing cards.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jeri and Jim McMahon, of Fort Gibson, Okla.; three grandchildren, Sean and his wife, Valerie McMahon, of Eugene Ore., Donald James III and his wife, Kelly McMahon, of West Linn, Ore., and Shannon and Dr. Mark Andregg, of Tulsa, Okla.; one great-grandson, Donald James McMahon IV; one sister, Ceil Maxson of Greene; and many nieces and nephews.

Florence was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, Richard and Ronald in infancy; her parents; two sisters, Mayme Steinberg and Monica Mark; and three brothers, Louis, Robert, and Dr. Thomas Nettleton.

** Lavon L. Steere

GREENE — Funeral services for Lavon L. Steere will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Greene, with Pastor Lance Kittleson officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene.

Lavon Lucille Reed was born Aug. 11, 1919, in rural Chapin, Franklin County, a daughter of James Garfield and Anna (Helt) Reed, and died Friday (Jan. 15, 1999) at the Liebe Care Center, Greene.

She received her education at the Old Yellow School House near their home and as a young lady attended the Hitesville Gospel Hall and was baptized in the West Fork.

On Feb. 12, 1939, she was united in marriage to Leo August Steere at the Lutheran Parsonage in Greene. They have farmed in the rural Greene area their entire married life where she took an active part in its operation as well as raising her five children. Lavon was a good cook, always making fresh bread every day, tending to her garden and preparing its produce for canning or freezing. As a pastime she enjoyed braiding rugs and had a great love for flowers.

She was confirmed a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene on March 24, 1940.

Living family members include her loving husband of 60 years, Leo "Curly" Steere, of Greene; one daughter, Nancy Hadley, of Slater; two sons, Jim of Greene and Les and his wife, Deb, of Greene; two daughters-in-law, LaVon Steere and Jolene Steere, both of Greene; eight grandchildren, Tracy Elizabeth Steere, Tammy and her husband, Todd Pugh, Jodie and her husband, Frank Pelletier, Jan and her husband, Jim Konig, Laurie Steere, Angela and her husband, John Ayers, Christopher Hadley and Regina Hadley; six great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mabel Christensen, of Klemme, Vera Puhl, of Charles City, Arlene Puhl, of Greene, and Ruby and her husband, Lowell Hobert, of Greene; four sisters-in-law, Eleanor Reed and Irene Reed, both of Greene, Avis Reed, of Charles City, and Beulah Reed, of Clarion; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her two sons, Leon in 1990 and Jerry in 1997; her parents; two sisters, Velma McSpaden and Bernadine Johnson; four brothers, John, Donald, Orville, and Merlin Reed.

OSAGE — Viola Ahrens, 78, died Saturday (Jan. 16, 1999) at St. Mary Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Champion Funeral Home, Osage.

** Michael Thomas Kellogg

WEST DES MOINES — Michael Thomas Kellogg, 60, of 4724 E. P. True Parkway, died Friday (Jan. 15, 1999) at Mercy Hospital Medical Center.

A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, West Des Moines. There will be no burial.

Family will greet friends one hour prior to the Mass time at the church. Funeral arrangements have been completed by Brooks Funeral Care, 7975 University Blvd., Clive.

Michael was born in Des Moines and had been living in West Des Moines for the past year. He has also lived in Glendale, Ariz., and Gendale, Calif. He was employed by Danielski Farm Transport as a dispatcher.

He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife, Cathy Kellogg, West Des Moines; a daughter, Ann Marie Kellogg, West Des Moines; three sisters, Lark Roberts, West Des Moines, Cherie Lee Oehlert, Clear Lake, and Bonnie Millard, West Des Moines; and three children from a previous marriage, Peter Kellogg, Sara Kellogg and Joseph Kellogg.

DUMONT — Jennie A. Buseman, 89, died Saturday (Jan. 16, 1999) at the Dumont Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Dumont Reformed Church with the Rev. Carl Gearhart officiating. Burial will be in Dumont Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Dumont.

Jennie A. Buseman was born Feb. 5, 1909, in Cogswell, N. D.

She is survived by three daughters, Kathleen Pralle, Latimer, Alvina Voss, Fern, and Jeanne (Jan) Reysack, Dumont; a son, Lenis Buseman, Charles City; a sister, Anna Kramer, Shell Rock; a brother, Reiner Fecht, Allison; 18 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a daughter, a son, four brothers, and two great-grandson.

MASON CITY — Mildred "Polly" Wiltsie Livingston, 83, of 317 Eighth St. S.E., died Friday (Jan. 15, 1999) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania, Mason City.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home. Further arrangements are incomplete at the funeral home.

** Wayne L. Bigelow

MASON CITY — Wayne L. Bigelow, 90, formerly of 9 Quincy Terrace, died Wednesday (Dec. 23, 1998) at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday , Jan. 19, at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S. E., with the Rev. Ken Hatland of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph’s Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Mason City Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday and will resume Tuesday from 9 a.m. until the time of services.

Wayne was born March 6, 1908, in Mason City, the son of Lincoln H. and Ella L. (Watson) Bigelow.

He was inducted into the United States Army on Feb. 25, 1944, and served as a military police officer. At the point of separation on Dec. 15, 1945, Wayne had earned the American Theater Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Victory Medal. After returning to Mason City, Wayne had a few jobs including being employed at American Crystal Sugar Co.

`Wayne was a "handyman" who spent countless hours working with wood crafts, such as squirrel feeders, and also creating different types of wind chimes. He enjoyed taking things apart and putting them back together while attempting to fix anything that was broken. He treasured the time when he was able to fish and spend time with his family and friends.

Wayne was a life-time member of the Disabled American Veterans and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City.

Those thankful for having shared in Wayne’s life include three daughters, Dorothy and her husband, Erik Justesen, of Albert Lea, Minn., Marlys and her husband, LeRoy Kelly, of Big Fork, Mont., and Lynn and her husband, Thomas Dwan, of Cedar Rapids; two sons, Wayne and his wife, Margie Bigelow, of Dayton, Minn., and Kenneth and his wife, Judy, Bigelow, of Long Lake, Minn.; 12 grandchildren, Greg Bigelow, Carolyn Bigelow, Daniel Bigelow, Jean and her husband, Joel Quinn, Mark and his wife, Michele Justesen, Kimberly and her husband, Michael Williams, Jennifer and her husband, Clayton Woll, Michael Dwan, Sharri Dwan, Debra Dwan, Dan Lancaster and his special friend, Kristine Nicklay, and Sherri and her husband, Steve Jaworski; four great-grandchildren, Tiffany and Stephanie Williams, Colton Woll, and Leah Jaworski; and nieces and nephews.

Those who preceded Wayne in death include his parents; one sister, Gladys Elkins; two half-sisters, Anna Vance and Mildred Shinnow, and a special friend, Lillian Mostrom.

** Vincent A. Lauer

MASON CITY — Vicent A. Lauer, 78, died Friday (Jan. 15, 1999) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Inurnment will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Family members will greet friends at the church one hour prior to the service Tuesday. Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., is in charge of arrangements.

Vincent Lauer was born May 15, 1920, in Mason City, the son of Peter and Laura (Himber) Lauer. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1938.

He served in the United States Army during World War II from February 1941 until May 1945, honorably discharged as a sergeant. He participated in the Italian and African campaigns.

On March 24, 1945, he was united in marriage to Nadene Able at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City.

Vincent was a firefighter for the Mason City Fire Department for 30 years, retiring as a captain in May 1975. He also worked at the Blackmore Nursery for 30 years.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, VFW Post No. 733, and Holy Family Catholic Church.

He is survived by his son, R. Lauer and his wife, Phyllis, Mason City; two grandsons, Russell and Darrell Lauer, Mason City; two sisters, Margaret Jeffrey, Mason City, and Marie Thomas, Mason City; one brother, Donald Lauer and his wife, Phyllis, Libertyville, Ill.; two brothers-in-law, Keith Able and his wife, Bernice, Escondido, Calif., and Jerry Able and his wife, Carol, San Jose, Calif.; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Zeiman and her husband, Bob, Ocala, Fla., and Virginia Baker, Clear Lake; many nieces and nephews; and special friends Bernard and Edythe Naumann.

Vincent was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one sister and three brothers.

** Rodney A. (Napaqtuq) Benson

FOREST CITY — Rodney A. (Napaqtuq) Benson, 51, died Saturday (Jan. 1, 1999) at his home in rural Forest City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at United Methodist Church, Forest City, with the Rev. Albert Snyder of First Congregational Church, Forest City, officiating. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark, Forest City.

Rodney A. (Napaqtuq) Benson was born Aug. 2, 1947, in Waterloo.

OSAGE —Viola Ahrens, 78, died Saturday (Jan. 16, 1999) at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Osage , with the Rev. Chris F. Gugel officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, rural Osage.

Viola Ahrens was born Feb. 25, 1920, in Cedar Township near Osage, the daughter of Herman and Martha (Kroneman) Schuttler. She attended rural schools and graduated from Osage High School in 1938.

Viola was united in marriage with Louis Ahrens Feb. 22 1941, at St. John's Lutheran Church in rural Osage. This marriage was blessed with two sons.

Louis and Viola farmed in the Osage area until 1980 when they retired and moved into Osage. Viola's hobbies included gardening, cooking and her family.

She is survived by her husband, Louis, of Osage; two sons, Merrill Ahrens and his wife, Linda, of Hampton, and Don Ahrens and his wife, Marylou, of Osage; and five grandchildren, Shelley Ahrens of Rochester, Minn., Cindy Ahrens of Iowa City, Renee Ahrens of Shenandoah, Brad Ahrens of College Station, Texas, and Lisa Ahrens of Indianapolis, Ind.

Viola was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Fred Schuttler; and a sister, Mrs. Ortwin (Esther) Hollatz.

MASON CITY — Mildred "Polly" Wiltsie Livingston, 83, of 317 Eighth St. S.E., died Friday (Jan. 15, 1999) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Wayne Ryan of Free Methodist Church and the Rev. Fay Johnson, a retired Methodist minister, officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Polly was born May 22, 1915, in Homer, the daughter of William and Ella (Ford) Bryant. She married Edward Wiltsie in October of 1933. They moved to Mason City in 1944. She worked for a number of years at Piggly-Wiggly in the meat department.

Polly married Ralph W. Livingston on March 20, 1964, in Mason City.

She enjoyed traveling, spending 18 winters in Weslaco, Texas, and summers in Wisconsin. She was a member of Free Methodist Church where she enjoyed singing. She was a member of Queen Rebekah Lodge. She also enjoyed cooking and crocheting.

Polly is survived by her husband, Ralph Livingston, Mason City; two daughters, Beverly Hudson and her husband, Leslie, Fort Worth, Texas, and Sue Hasfjord and her husband, Soren, Dallas, Texas; a son, Kenneth Wiltsie and his wife, Carol, Mason City; two stepdaughters, Sally Livingston, Fairfield, Calif., and Carol Livingston, Detroit; two stepsons, David Livingston and his wife, Leona, Rochester, Minn., and Paul Livingston, Minneapolis; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Clarice Christensen and her husband, Jack, Weslaco, Texas; five brothers, William Bryant and his wife, Donna, Branson, Mo., John D. ** Richard C. Austin

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — Word has been received of the death Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999, of Richard C. Austin of Huntington Beach, Calif.

Richard was born April 19, 1946, the son of Cecil and Florence (Ward) Austin. He had lived the past several years in California.

The body has been cremated, and a family service will be held at a later date.

He is survived by three brothers, Harvey and wife Dorothy of Cartersville, Doug and wife LaDonna of Kellerton, and James and wife Joyce of Klemme; and four sisters, Hazel Raprager of Rockford, Ill., Laverna Colombo of Mason City, Delores Rinnels of Wayland, Mich., and Thelma and husband Rick Beighton of Plymouth.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Tom.

** Fred W. Pals Sr.

RUSH CITY, Minn. — Fred William Pals Sr., the son of Peter H. and Gesena (Wolters) Pals, was born July 2, 1904, at Meservey.

He grew up there, attended the local schools and, with his family, attended the German Reformed Church in Meservey.

Following his graduation from high school, Fred enrolled in classes at the Telegraphy & Business College in Minneapolis. He completed the required courses and graduated as a telegrapher in November 1925. He was then employed as a telegrapher in the St. Paul, Minn., area.

Fred met the former Helen Lundin, and they were married at Pine City, Minn., on June 2, 1927.

Fred and Helen returned to Iowa and farmed for a time in the area near Meservey and also in northern Iowa. During the spring of 1945, Fred and Helen moved to their present home, a farm near Rush City, Minn.

Although he farmed full time, Fred always worked at a job off the farm also. He worked on the railroad section crew and power line at Finland, Minn., and at the time Minneapolis Moline closed, Fred was a 15-year employee.

Following his retirement, Fred and Helen stayed on the farm. He then had time to indulge in his favorite pastimes of deer hunting and fishing.

Helen died in 1985, and Fred continued to live alone at the farm until recent health problems caused him to become a resident of the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Rush City. He died there on Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, having reached the age of 94 years.

He is survived by their six children, Robert E. (Lois) Pals, James (Marian) Pals, and Margie (Darwin) Nelson, all of Clear Lake, Carol Clark, of Ponca City, Okla., Gene (Janet) Pals, of Pine City, Minn., and Fred (Martha) Pals Jr., of Stanchfield, Minn.; 21 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; sisters, Lena Lock, of Mason City, Marie (Bernard) Vierkant, of Jacksonville, Texas, and Lydia Hemmes, of Hampton; brothers, Henry Pals, of Mason City, and Andrew (Lucille) Pals, of Meservey, and many nieces, nephews, cousins; and other relatives and friends.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents; Peter and Gesena Pals; wife, Helen; grandchildren, Cindy Pals, Danny Nelson, and Steven Pals; great-grandson, Brandon Lindig; and son-in-law, Ronald Clark.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, at First Lutheran Church, in Rush City, with the Rev. Laurie O'Shea officiating. Organist was Ms. Doris Swanson and soloist was Ms. Kaye Lindig. Honorary casket bearers were Butch Behrendt, Duane Anderson, Aldo Lindstrom, Art Swenson, Wendell Johnson and Vern Dahl. Hazel was born July 9, 1908, the daughter of Ora and Gladys (Harley) McElwain, Woodbine.

Hazel was a very generous and compassionate person who volunteered numerous hours to her community and church. She was past president of the Rockford Women's Club; and had also held various offices in the local and county Historical Society.

Hazel was extremely involved in the church, including holding several offices, depicting the history of the church and the history of the United Methodist Women. Hazel also donated the display case at the church and kept it up while she was still capable.

To the neighborhood children, she was known as the "Cookie Lady." Hazel was very in-tuned to keeping the family genealogy.

Hazel was employed by the Rockford Farmers Coop Exchange for 21 years as a bookkeeper until retiring in 1972.

Hazel was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Rockford, and the Bookkeepers Association.

Those thankful for having shared Hazel's life include one daughter, Dorothy and her husband, James North, of Rockford; one son, James and his wife, Margot Nelson, of Des Moines; two brothers, Gordon McElwain, of Blair, Neb., and Merril and his wife, Loie McElwain, of Woodbine; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Martin; and one brother, Russell McElwain.

** LeRoy D. 'Giz-Mo' Gaebel

CLEAR LAKE — LeRoy D. "Giz-Mo" Gaebel, 75, of 5851 S. Shore Dr., Clear Lake, died Sunday (Jan. 17, 1999) at his home, in Clear Lake. He was cremated at his request.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jim Norem, of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Mason City, officiating. Military honors will be by the Clear Lake V.F.W.

The family will greet friends from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel and one hour prior to services on Thursday.

LeRoy was born May 21, 1923, in Chicago, the son of John and Molly Gaebel. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was honorably discharged on July 9, 1948.

LeRoy worked for the Clear Lake Bakery for 36 years as a cake decorator. He took great pride in his work and willingly shared his homemade "goodies" with his family and friends.

After retirement, he served as a general "handyman" and caretaker for many neighbors and friends at the Longbeach Trailer Park, where he resided. He was the first person snow blowing after a snowfall and mowing in the summer months. He was rather a private person but will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and faithful friend. His friends remember his great sense of humor, his never having a harsh word for anyone and particularly his willingness to help anyone at any time.

Those thankful for having shared in his life include two daughters, Diana "Dee" Greenan and her husband, Mike, of Mason City, and Sandra K. Minert, of Clear Lake; one son, David E. She married Robert E. Sorensen in 1949, and he preceded her in death in 1970.

BEMIDJI, Minn. — Betty M. Hert, 77, of Bemidji, died Monday (Jan. 4, 1999) at the Beltrami County Nursing Home, in Bemidji, where she had been a resident since 1989.

Her body was cremated and will be set to rest at Greenwood Cemetery, in Bemidji, Minn. A memorial service was held Jan. 7, 1999, in Bemidji.

She was born Betty M. Johnson on Jan. 15, 1921, to Julius and Blanche (Lane) Johnson, in Bemidji. She moved to Mason City as a teenager. She was married on Dec. 14, 1941, to Henry Hart, in Mason City. They made their home in Mason City until retiring to the Bemidji area in 1977.

Betty worked as a seamstress, bookkeeper and a secretary. As the mother of two, she also took her turn as both a Boy Scout and a Girl Scout leader. She had many hobbies with craft work being her favorite. She also loved fishing and camping.

Betty is survived by one son, Bill Hert, of Minneapolis; one daughter, Marcia Foss, of Belmond; five grandchildren, Angie Andres, Karen Hert, and Ryan Hert, all of Minneapolis, and Mark Foss and Lisa Foss, both of Belmond; two great-grandchildren, Megan and Gabrielle Andres, of Minneapolis; one sister-in-law, Millie Hert, of Mesa, Ariz.; one brother-in-law, A.J. Erickson, of Mason City; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one infant daughter, and three brothers.

** Jessie Morphew

CLEAR LAKE — Jessie Morphew, 98, of Clear Lake, formerly of Mason City, died Monday (Jan. 18, 1999) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

The body was cremated. Graveside services will be in the spring at the Rockwell Cemetery. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, Mason City, or to Hospice of North Iowa in her name.

Jessie was born July 26, 1900, in Alexander, the daughter of Fred and Ida (Holman) Dull. She married Vern Morphew in 1923. She had lived in Mason City since the age of seven. In the summer of 1986, she moved to Clear Lake to live by her sister, Beth.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Mason City, and was an Eastern Star. She enjoyed many hobbies and crafting.

Jessie is survived by four grandchildren, Michael Morphew, of Upland, Calif., Charles Morphew, of Whittier, Calif., Mary Engelsen, of San Dimas, Calif., and Carol Garrity, of Goose Creek, S.C.; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Beth Hanson, of Clear Lake.

Jessie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Vern; her son, Clinton Morphew; seven brothers, Ross, Rollo, Harry, Herbert, Ralph, George and Stillman Dull; one sister, Stella Magoon; and one niece, Viola Moen.

ROCKWELL — Paul F. Meyer, 84, of 5756 Thrush Ave., died Tuesday morning (Jan. 19, 1999) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services are tentatively planned for 1:30 p.m. Friday, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Rockwell.

Visitation will begin after 4 p.m. Thursday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, Rockwell, where other arrangements are incomplete.

** Bernice Davis

AREDALE — Bernice Davis, 82, died Monday (Jan. 18, 1999) at Western Home, Cedar Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home, Dumont, with the Rev. Carl Gearhart officiating. Burial will take place at Hampton Cemetery.

Bernice Davis was born Nov. 20, 1916, in White Water, Mont.

She is survived by two daughters, Joanne Rutter, Waterloo, and LaDonna Frost, Gilbertville; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers and four grandchildren.

BANCROFT — Laura Kahler, 82, died Monday (Jan. 18, 1999) at The Heritage Nursing Home, Bancroft.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John Catholic Church, Bancroft, with the Rev. John Thomas officiating. Burial will be in St. John Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Bancroft. A rosary service will begin at 3 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Laura was born on Aug. 28, 1916, in Maple River, the daughter of Anthony and Josephine (Lampe) Lappe. She moved to the Bancroft area as a young child with her family. Laura attended rural school and helped on the family farm.

Laura was married to Herman Kahler on Nov. 12, 1935, at Bancroft. They farmed east of Bancroft all their married life. Herman died in 1996.

She was a long-time member of the St. John Catholic parish and was a member of the St. John Altar Society. Laura became a resident of The Heritage Home in November 1998.

Laura is survived by three daughters, Donna Hellman and her husband, Dennis, of Burt, Barbara Ruzicka and her husband, Richard, of Belleville, Ill., and Betty Hansen and her husband, Carl, of Blue Earth, Minn.; six sons, Albert Kahler and his wife, Mary, of Titonka, Tony Kahler and his wife, Lael, of Bancroft, Richard Kahler and his wife, Delores, of Britt, Allen Kahler and his wife, Debra, of Swea City, Kenneth Kahler, and his wife, Elaine, of Burt, John Kahler and his wife, Pam, of Bancroft; 21 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Loretta Kramer of Algona, Florence Kramer of Muscatine, Marie Clapsaddle of Olympia, Wash., and Irene May and her husband, Richard, of Engelwood, Colo.; and one brother, Joe Lappe and his wife, Mary Lou, of Wesley.

Laura was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four brothers, Lawrence, Louis, Francis and Alious Lappe; and a sister, Louise Goche.

CHARLES CITY — Margaret (Mrs. Harland) Ransom, 76, of 306 Fifth Ave., died Monday (Jan. 18, 1999) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City, with the Rev. Darwin Miller, pastor of the Temple Baptist Church, Charles City, officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens south of Charles City.

Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Hauser Funeral Home. The family will greet friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday.

Margaret Elizabeth Ransom was born March 10, 1922, in Nashua.

She is survived by two sons, John Ransom, Oelwein, and Richard Ransom, Waldron, Ark.; two daughters, Dixie Steele, Ham Lake, Minn., and Kathleen Jensen, Waukesha, Wis.; and four sisters, Susie Monroe, Charles City, Christine Hvitved, Marian Hannermann and Garland Jensen, all of Nashua; 13 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, a sister and a grandson.

** Voula A. Papantonis

MASON CITY — Voula A. Papantonis, 92, of Mason City, died Monday (Jan. 18, 1999) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Greek Orthodox Church of Transfiguration, 1311 Second St. S.W., Mason City, with the Rev. Joseph Mirowski officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with a Trasagion service beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Daughters of Penelope Scholarship Fund or Charlie Brown Daycare Center, in memory of Voula A. Papantonis.

Voula A. Papantonis was born Dec. 25, 1906, in Sparta, Greece, daughter of Konstandinos and Ourania (Theofanopoulou) Rogakos. She married Paul Papantonis on Feb. 27, 1930, in Megalopolis, Greece.

Voula arrived in Mason City from Greece as a new bride. She eagerly pursued learning the English Language and received her naturalization papers, of which she was proud. She was a devoted wife and mother, enjoyed owning and operating the Green Mill Restaurant with her husband, Paul, and delighted in supporting her children in their school and extra-curricular activities.

She was a room mother, PTA member and volunteered her talents and time to her children's activities. Her service to the community included serving on the YWCA board, Grandmother's Club, Red Cross Gray Ladies and Mason City Woman's Club.

She was a charter member of the Daughters of Penelope and served in many capacities. She was a member of the White Shrine, PEO, Eastern Star, MacNider Museum, United Church Women and Philoptochos. She was an untiring worker for her church.

Voula loved to entertain at home and was a gracious hostess and excellent cook. In the last few years, she had the time to pursue her interest in painting and ceramics.

She loved Mason City. Voula touched many lives and left her mark on the hearts of those who knew and loved her. She will be remembered for her genuine and sincere love and concern for people, especially her family.

Survivors include one daughter, Kalliope Jolas, of Mason City; one son, Anthony Papantonis and his wife, Judy, of Westcliffe, Colo.; five grandchildren, Van Jolas and his wife, Leigh, of Dallas, Texas, Stephanie Durkin and her husband, Michael, of Sterling, Va., Paul Jolas and his wife, Apryl, of Dallas, Texas, Christie Chase and her husband, Chris, of Dallas, Texas, and Jodie Rasicot and her husband, Jim, of Minnetrista, Minn.; three stepgrandchildren, Debbie Anderson and her husband, Dan, of Sturges, S.D., Dave Page and Sharon Kjellberg, of St. Paul, Minn., and Patrick Page and his wife, Cindy, of Galena, Ill.; five great-grandchildren, Mark and Grace Jolas, both of Dallas, Texas, Austin and Kendall Chase, both of Dallas, Texas, and Jamie Rasicot, of Minnetrista, Minn.; four stepgreat-grandchildren, Nathaniel and Sena Anderson, both of Sturges, S.D., and John and Sarah Page, both of Galena, Ill.; one sister, Maria Giannopoulou, of Athens, Greece; and a niece and nephews in Greece, Anthony Papantonis, Kallie Passadeos, and Theodore Giannopoulos.

OSAGE — Mrs. Donald G. (Winifred) Clark, 86, died Monday (Jan. 18, 1999) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, Osage, with the Rev. Arthur L. Hill officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Champion Funeral Home, Osage. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. and from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church Friday. Champion Funeral Home, Osage, is in charge of the arrangements.

Winifred was born Sept. 30, 1912, in Riceville, the daughter of Willard and Bertha (Smalling) Tyrrell. She attended Riceville schools and graduated from Riceville High School in 1929. She took two years of business classes in Osage and completed her bachelor's degree at Upper Iowa University.

Winifred was a teacher in different rural schools in Mitchell County and later taught in Mitchell and Osage.

She was united in marriage to Donald G. Clark on May 5, 1934, at Ames.

Winifred was a member of D.A.R., 50-year member of the Eastern Star and a past Worthy Matron. She was also a member of A.D.K. Sorority and the First United Methodist Church, Osage.

She is survived by her husband, Donald G. Clark, Osage; two daughters, Marijane Bowman, Rock Island, Ill., and Shari Moulder and her husband, Robert, Eden Prairie, Minn.; one sister, Harriet Oster, Torrance, Calif.; a brother, Scott Tyrrell and his wife, Olive, Tucson, Ariz.; a sister-in-law, Violet Tyrrell, Spencer; and four grandchildren, Charles Moulder, Jack Moulder, Tara Moulder and Meghan Moulder.

Winifred was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Gary; an infant brother, Wesley; an infant sister, Marjorie; a brother, Donald Tyrrell; and a sister Mrs. Merrill (Helene) Kelley.

** Eugene "Ben" Burney

CHARLES CITY — Eugene "Ben" Burney, 73, of 911 Eleventh St., died Monday (Jan. 18, 1999) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Charles City, with Monsignor Walter Brunkan, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Greene, officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery with a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. today at the Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City. A vigil scriptural wake service will begin at 7 p.m. followed by a rosary recited by the Knights of Columbus. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the Mass Thursday at the church.

Eugene "Ben" Burney was born Nov. 6, 1925, in Charles City.

He is survived by two sons, Tom Burney, Shoreview, Minn., and Bill Burney, Charles City; a daughter, Jane Jans, Stanhope; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a daughter, a brother and three sisters.

** Newell Brown

BRITT — Newell Brown, 81, died Monday (Jan. 18, 1999) at Westview Care Center, Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at United Methodist Church, Britt, with the Rev. Robert Dodge officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Britt.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. at Ewing Funeral Chapel, Britt, and will resume one hour prior to services at the church Friday.

Newell Brown was born Oct. 7, 1917, in West Bend.

He is survived by his wife, Verna Brown, Britt; five sons, Don Brown, Mason City, Shirley Brown, Wichita, Kan., Alan Brown, Britt, Vennis Brown, Aurelia, and Ralph Brown, Clear Lake; two brothers, Myron Brown, Mount Pleasant, Texas, and Merle Brown, Garner; 18 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Newell was preceded in death by his parents, one son, one grandson and four brothers.

** Eileen L. Trager

GARNER — Eileen L. Trager, 65, of Garner, died Monday (Jan. 18, 1999) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at United Methodist Church, Garner, with the Rev. Kay Hooper officiating. Interment will be at Amsterdam Township Cemetery, Goodell.

Eileen L. Trager was born July 24, 1933, at Goodell.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one infant son.

** Elizabeth Kroc

MASON CITY — Elizabeth Kroc, 96, died Monday (Jan. 18, 1999) at the Heritage Care Center, Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill of Holy Family Catholic Church officiating. Burial will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in the Calvary Cemetery, Austin, Minn.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel and will continue one hour prior to the Mass Thursday.

Elizabeth Kroc was born Nov. 22, 1903, in the New Hampton/Lawler area, the daughter of Daniel and Mary (Dokendorf) Nugent.

On June 4, 1938, she was united in marriage to Louis J. Kroc at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mason City. He preceded her in death on Aug. 8 1962.

Elizabeth resided in Austin, Minn., until the late 1970s, when she moved to Mason City. In Austin she was a charter member of the Queen of Angels Catholic Church. She participated in the Rosary Society and was a member of the St. Zita Unit of the church and the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW No. 4903, Austin, Minn.

Elizabeth was a great lady who easily made friends and will be dearly missed.

She is survived by one sister, Agnes Louise deBuhr, Mason City, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and all of her other brothers and sisters.

DOWS — Fred Larson, 59, of Duncan, formerly of Dows, died Tuesday (Jan. 19, 1999) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt.

** Louise K. Hanson

BUFFALO CENTER — Louise Katheryn Hanson, 86, died Monday (Jan. 18, 1999) at the Titonka Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Buffalo Center, with the Rev. Gerald Dyste officiating. Interment will be in Olena Mound Cemetery, Buffalo Center.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Winter Funeral Home, Buffalo Center, and will resume one hour before the service at the church.

Louise Katheryn Hanson was born on a farm outside of Lakota on Sept. 5, 1912.

She is survived by one son, Douglas Hanson, Buffalo Center; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; and a brother, Julius Stroebel, Appleton, Minn.

Louise was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son and several brothers and sisters.
