CHARLES CITY — Mary K. Kramer, 103, died Saturday (Jan. 9, 1999) at the Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home.
Graveside memorial funeral services will be held at the Appleton Cemetery, Appleton, Minn., in the spring. There will be no visitation. The Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mary Kaye Kramer was born May 5, 1895, in Metcalf, Ill.
Survivors include a daughter, Alta Mae Kasel of Charles City; a son, Leroy Kramer of Farmington, Minn.; seven grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; nine stepgreat-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons and six brothers and sisters.

TITONKA — Dorothy Elizabeth "Betty" Schutjer, 84, died Sunday (Jan. 10, 1999) at the Titonka Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Timm Wilkin officiating. Burial will be in the Buffalo Township Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home.
She was born March 25, 1914, in Minneapolis.
Survivors include her children, Millie Yates of Clear Lake and Jerald D. Schutjer of Palm Harbor, Fla.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and one sister.
** Inez Holmes
RICEVILLE — Inez Holmes, 81, passed away Sunday (Jan. 10, 1999) at Howard County Memorial Hospital in Cresco.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at First Congregational United Church of Christ, Riceville, with the Rev. Dr. Thomas Mowbray officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery at Plymouth.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Lindstrom Funeral Home, Riceville.
Inez Janet Holmes was born Nov. 26, 1917, in rural Mason City, to John and Helena (Wempken) Alitz. She attended local schools and Mason City High School. On Oct. 5, 1939, she was united in marriage to Thomas (Murray) Holmes at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. To this union two children were born. For more than 30 years, Inez owned and operated the Wedding and Parties Specialties business in Riceville.
Survivors include her husband, Murray, of Riceville; one son, Greg, and his wife, Jan Holmes, of Detroit Lakes, Minn.; one daughter, Marilyn, and her husband, Joe Hartogh, of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren and their spouses, Colleen and Pierce Eckhoff of Minburn, Steven and Susanna Hartogh of St. Paul, Minn., Michael Hartogh of St. Paul, Janelle and Matt Bowman of League City, Texas, and Nicole Hartogh of Minneapolis; three great-grandchildren, Ethan Eckhoff, Collin Hartogh and Jane Bowman; three brothers, Bill Alitz of Des Moines, LeRoy Alitz of Poughkeepskie, N.Y., and Harley Alitz of Mason City; and three sisters, Lucille Houck of Keystone, Loree Kulhavy of Mason City and Marjorie Hansen of Sumner, Wash.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Milton Alitz.

NASHUA — Clarence Marvin Sr., 79, died Saturday (Jan. 9, 1999) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Nashua, with the Rev. Robert Spaight officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City.
Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City, where the St. Francis Circle will recite the Rosary at 3 p.m., and a scriptural wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Clarence Lawrence Marvin Sr. was born Jan. 20, 1919, at Alta Vista.
Survivors include his wife, Anna, of Nashua; three sons, Clarence Jr. and Larry, both of Nashua, and John of Charles City; eight grandchildren; two brothers, LaVerne and Virgil, both of Alta Vista; and four sisters, Marcella Simmons of Marion, Myrtle Ronsonke of New Hampton, Delores Welch of Hammond, Ind., and Mary Knutson of Charles City.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.

** Gaylord Truman Gordon
NORTHWOOD — Gaylord Truman Gordon, 89, of Kensett, died Sunday (Jan. 10, 1999) at the Lutheran Retirement Home, in Northwood.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Kensett, with the Rev. Selmer G. "Sam" Hernes officiating. Burial will be in the Kensett Cemetery.
Friends may call from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.
Gaylord Truman Gordon was bon on Dec. 31, 1909, in rural Kensett, the son of Teman and Randina (Trustem) Gordon. He attended and received his education in the rural Kensett School System, graduating from Kensett High School in 1927. After completing his schooling, he helped his family on the family farm in rural Kensett.
He was united in marriage to Marie Tietz on Sept. 2, 1937, in Mitchell, S.D. She preceded him in death on Aug. 12, 1988. After their marriage together they farmed three miles east of Kensett, farming all of his life until he became a resident of the Lutheran Retirement Home in 1995.
He enjoyed listening to music, hunting, fishing, trapping, visiting with his family and friends on the telephone, children and also visiting with his friends at Bang's Hardware Store in Kensett, but his great love and enjoyment was his family and grandchildren.
He was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Kensett.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Gail Gordon and his wife, Sharon, of Kensett, Donald Gordon and his wife, Karen, of Kensett, Marion Helgeson and her husband, Ronald, and Joyce Diedrich, all of Mason City; 14 grandchildren, Shelli Diedrich, of Davenport, Kimberly Ott and her husband, James, of Mt. Vernon, Brandon Diedrich, of Grafton, Matthew Helgeson, of Omaha, Neb., Andrew Helgeson, of Kensett, Jeffrey Helgeson and his wife, Kim, of Plano, Texas, David Gordon and his wife, Amy, of Shakopee, Minn., Daniel Gordon and his wife, Charlotte, of Grafton, Brian Gordon, of Kensett, Jared Gordon, of Kensett, Nicholas Gordon, of Kensett, Laurene Kruger and her husband, Neil, of Grafton, Holly Gordon, of Urbandale and her fiancee, Eric Lewis, of Des Moines, and Gaye Gordon, of Tucson, Ariz.; nine great-grandchildren, Travis and Shea Kruger, Madeline, Martha, Melanie, Codie and Connor Gordon, and Kari and Jake Helgeson; as well as other relatives and friends.
Besides his wife, he was also preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Norman, Ernest and Lawrence Gordon.

WODEN — Freddie Gerdes, 83, of Garner, formerly of Woden, died Sunday (Jan. 10, 1999) at the Concord Care Center, Garner.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Woden, with the Rev. Arlen Lloyd officiating. Interment will be in Bingham Township Cemetery, Woden, with military rites conducted by the Woden Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Freddie Gerdes, the son of Fritz Theilan and Elizabeth (Rolfe) Gerdes was born Jan. 1, 1916, at Woden. He graduated from Woden High School in 1933 and worked with his father as a carpenter.
On Aug. 30, 1939, he was married to Leota Marie Smith in Mason City. They made their home in Woden until August 1996, when they moved to Prairie View Apartments in Garner.
Freddie was a carpenter in the Woden area and worked at Marting Manufacturing in Britt. During World War II, he served his country in the U.S. Army.
He enjoyed his family, reading, playing cards, hunting, fishing and sports, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Woden and the Woden American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Leota, of Garner; three children, Duane H. Gerdes and his wife, Sue, of Kingman, Ariz., Janelle F. Thompson and her husband, Duane, of Northwood, and Denise K. Thein and her husband, Gerry, of Okoboji; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty May and her husband, Don, of Corwith, and Barbara Shipman, of Rudd; three sisters-in-law, Alice Gerdes, of Forest City, Evelyn Gerdes, of Britt, and Rose Gerdes, of Garner; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter-in-law, Lois Gerdes; two sisters, Mary Bode and Helen McGurk; four brothers, John F. Gerdes, Hans Gerdes, Henry Gerdes and Ernest Gerdes; and three brothers-in-law, David Shipman, Joe McGurk and Ted Bode.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Visitation will begin after 2:30 p.m. today at the Champion Funeral Home, Osage, with a 3 p.m. rosary and a scripture service at 7:30 p.m.
Lola Kramer was born Jan. 24, 1930, in Osage.
Survivors include two foster sons, Matt Miller, of Osage, and Rick Miller, of Austin, Texas; four foster grandchildren; two sisters, Doris Sonberg, of Osage, and Mary Rosensweig, of Riceville; and two brothers, Howard Weiland and Fred Wieland, both of Osage.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one brother.

NORTHWOOD — John Henry Lippstock, 66, of Northwood, died Friday (Jan. 8, 1999) at the Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City.

John Henry Lippstock was born April 20, 1932, in Guttenberg.

TITONKA — Sharon K. Gray, 61, of Machesney Park, Ill., formerly of Buffalo Center, died at 11:36 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 9, 1999) at Rockford Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Ramsey Reformed Church, rural Titonka, with Pastor Dennis Redecker officiating. Burial will be in the Ramsey Reformed Cemetery.

Sharon was born Nov. 19, 1937, in Buffalo Center, daughter of Jake and Mary Betels Winter. She lived 25 years in Machesney Park, Ill, coming from Iowa.
She married Lloyd Gray in Buffalo Center on June 1, 1956. She operated a child care service in her home for several years. She was a member of Hope Reformed Church. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Survivors include her husband, Lloyd; three daughters, Mary Bolie and her husband, Doug, of Burt; Cheryl Vaher and her husband, Jeff, of Machesney Park; Sally Goltzman and her husband, Pete, of Melbourne Beach, Fla.; two sons, Timothy Gray and his wife, Sally, of Loves Park; and Mark Gray and his wife, Kimberly, of Rockford; nine grandchildren, Jerry Bolie and his wife, Sara; Rachel and Emily Vaher, Cody and Kaitlin Gray, Alyssa and Alek Goltzman, Austin and Brandon Gray; two brothers, Alvin Winter and his wife, Gladys, of Parachute, Colo., and Jake Winter and his wife, Arlene, of Buffalo Center; a sister, Ann "Tootie" Patterson and her husband, Lyle, of Buffalo Center.

Wilma A. Lumley was born March 17, 1923 in Butler County.
Survivors include one daughter, Peggy Varrelman, of Hampton; two sons, Lynn Lumley, of Hampton and Gary Lumley, of St. Ansgar; nine grandchildren; three sisters, Edna Peil, of Alexander, Lois Koester, of Allison, and Edith Kolthoff, of Nashua; and one brother, Clifford Wiebke, of Nashua.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two grandsons, one brother, and one brother and one sister, in infancy.

CHARLES CITY — Lorrayne (Mrs. Lamont) Johnson, 78, a former resident of 113 Oliver St., died Tuesday (Jan. 12, 1999) at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., with the Rev. Blair Rohde-Frank, pastor of West St. Charles United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Sunnyside Memory Gardens, south of Charles City.
Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m. today at the Hauser Funeral Home, with the family greeting friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. until time of services on Friday at the funeral home.
Lorrayne E. Johnson was born July 11, 1920, at Colwell.
Survivors include one stepdaughter, Karen Forsyth, of Charles City; one sister, Neoma Thompson, of Charles City; three stepgrandchildren; and nine stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one sister.

EDMOND, Okla. — Delbert Robert Mayo, 77, of 14201 Scott St., Edmund, Okla., died Thursday (Jan. 7, 1999) at his home.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with the Rev. David Shogren, of Wesley United Methodist Church, officiating. Military rites will be performed by Mason City Veteran's Memorial Association.
There will be no visitation. Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, is in charge of arrangements.
Delbert R. Mayo was born Aug. 24, 1921 in Mason City to Mariano and Lucinda (Picket) Mayo. He attended Mason City Schools.
He served as a Staff Sergeant in the 6th Engineer Combat Battalion in the South Pacific and Korea.
After the service, he owned and operated a hotel in Oklahoma until retirement.
Delbert was a member of the V.F.W. and the Moose Lodge.
Survivors include two brothers, Lloyd Mayo, of Urbandale, and Louis Mayo, of Huxley; one sister, Ramona Edwards, of Mason City; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marlene; sister, Delores Ward; and brother, Charles Mayo.

Lawrence Truman Levorson was born Nov. 3, 1929, in Lake Mills.
He is survived by his wife, Anita Levorson, and his daughter, Laura, of Lake Mills; two sisters, Virginia Levorson and Norma Peterson, both of Lake Mills; and a brother, Harlan Levorson, of Lake Mills.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents.
** John Wesley Jernegan
HAMPTON — John Wesley Jernegan, 78, died Wednesday (Jan. 13, 1999) at Hampton Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton, with the Rev. Gregory Smith officiating. Burial will be in Hampton Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. today at Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton.
John Wesley Jernegan was born Nov. 7, 1920, in Hampton.
He is survived by nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
** Ruth Milligan
CHARLES CITY — Ruth (Mrs. Kenneth) Milligan, 86, a former resident of 1715 Owen St., died Wednesday (Jan. 13, 1999) at the Liebe Care Center, Greene.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., Charles City, with Monsignor Stanley J. Hayek, pastor of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Charles City, officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens south of Charles City.
Friends may call from 12:30 to 9 p.m. today at Hauser Funeral Home. The family will greet friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 until the service Saturday at the church.
Ruth Pauline (Jensen) Milligan was born Nov. 27, 1912, in Chickasaw County.
She is survived by two sons, Leroy Milligan and Wendell "Mike" Milligan, both of Charles City; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and five brothers.
** Lodema E. Green
GREENE — Funeral services for Lodema E. Green, 95, of Jacksonville, Fla., formerly of Greene, will be at 2 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel, in Greene, with Pastor Lance Kittleson of St. Peter Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, in Greene.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services today at the Funeral Chapel.
Lodema Eileen Green was born Feb. 19, 1903, in rural Scott Township, Floyd County, a daughter of Emil A. and Minnie (Foltz) Uker and died Sunday (Jan. 10, 1999) at Palemon-Gaskin Nursing Home in Ocilla, Ga.
She received her education in the rural schools and graduated from the Greene High School. As a young lady she worked in Mason City, and following her marriage to Thomas C. Green, they moved to Burlington, where she was employed at the Ordinance Plant there.
Mr. and Mrs. Greene moved to Arlington Park, Jacksonville, Fla., in 1965. Mr. Green died in April of 1978. In later years, she lived near her family in Fitzgerald, Ga.
Living family members include a daughter-in-law, Dorothy Green-Tison, of Fitzgerald, Ga.; four grandchildren, Kevin C. and his wife, Doreen Green, Jessica and her husband, Michael Sulatycki, Alan Green and Cathi Hull; three great-grandchildren; three nieces, Caroline Schafer, of Dougherty, Elaine Miller, of Cherokee, Ark., and Elsie Schafer, of Waterloo; and one nephew, Robert and his wife, Kay Schafer, of Dougherty.
She was preceded in death by her husband; son, Thomas C. Green Jr. in 1982; her parents; two sisters, Goldie Schafer and Sylvia Emry; and two nephews, Merlyn Schafer and Roger Schafer.

** Marie C. Ashland
MASON CITY — Marie C. Ashland, 79, died Wednesday (Jan. 13, 1999) at the Heritage Care Center, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. John "Jack" Gannett officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Mason City.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, and will resume an hour prior to the service at the church.
Memorials may be directed to the Marie C. Ashland Memorial Fund.
Marie C. Ashland was born July 13, 1919, in Mason City, the daughter of Mads Peter and Kristine (Pedersen) Madsen. Marie was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City.
Marie attended elementary and high school in Mason City and graduated in the class of 1937. Marie was employed at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company from 1938 until she retired in 1981.
She was married to Merton E. Benham on Jan. 13, 1943, at Trinity Lutheran Church by the Rev. Rogness. Merton died in 1949 from polio while they were living on a farm near Hampton. In 1950 Marie returned to Mason City with her three children.
Marie married Ole Ashland Jr. from Clear Lake on Sept. 12, 1956, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake by the Rev. Mostrom.
Marie resided the rest of her life in Mason City, where she enjoyed golfing, fishing, crocheting and quilting. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Telephone Pioneer Group, Moose Women and the VFW Auxiliary.
She is survived by two daughters, Madilyn Norton, of Woodland, Calif., and Marilyn Laage and her husband, Linn, of Eagan, Minn.; a son, Richard Benham and his wife, Barbara, of New Hope, Minn.; two stepdaughters, Jeannette Caspers and her husband, Dale, of Swaledale, and Elaine Olson and her husband, Jim, of Garner; a stepson, Robert Ashland and his wife, Betty, of Sequim, Wash.; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Bernice Von Der Linde and her husband, Elmer, of Mason City, and several nieces and nephews.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Merton Benham in 1949; her second husband, Ole Ashland in 1983; and three brothers, Christian, Carl and Harvey Madsen.
** Russell Knuepfer
BRADENTON, Fla. — Russell Knuepfer, 78, of Bradenton, Fla., died Jan. 5, 1999 at Blake Medical Center, Bradenton, Fla.
A Memorial service will be held at a later date in Mason City, Iowa. Griffith-Cline Funeral Home, Cortez Road Chapel, Bradenton, Fla., was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial donations may be made to a favorite charity in memory of Russell Knuepfer.
Russell Knuepfer was born Feb. 2, 1920 in Chicago, Ill.
He served in World War II in the American Field Service and later joined the British Army serving in Africa, Burma and India.
He was vice president and branch manager of A.C. Nielsen in Mason City. He moved to Manatee County from Mason City in 1984.
He was a member of the Rotary, Mason City County Club, and Chamber of Commerce. He was an avid Golfer.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Knuepfer, of Bradenton, Fla.; one daughter, Patricia Pettinger, of Adair, Iowa; two sons, Gary Knuepfer, of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Bruce Knuepfer, of Green Bay, Wis.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
** Russell LeRoy Evans
NORTHWOOD — Russell LeRoy Evans, 66, of Northwood, died Tuesday (Jan. 12, 1999) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Lutheran Church, Northwood, with the Rev. David Wall officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 99 11th St. S., Northwood and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.
Russell LeRoy Evans was born March 31, 1932, at Mason City, the son of Clay and Luella (Donahoo) Evans.
In 1950, he was united in marriage to Anna Olson, in Kensett.
Russ operated his own plumbing service in Northwood, specializing in heating and cooling. He enjoyed his work and just enjoyed working with and helping people in general.
He adored his children and grandchildren and his wife, who was also his best friend. He was a longtime member of First Lutheran Church, Northwood, and was very involved with many church activities, especially the Men in Mission group.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Anna Evans, of Northwood; three children, Kirk Evans and his wife, Ann, of Winsted, Minn., Jill Mellem and her husband, Dennis, of Northwood, and Mike Evans and his wife, Kim, of Woodsfield, Ohio; nine grandchildren, Brandon, Sarah, Ryan and Christopher Evans, Lisa Mellem Scholl, Betsey Mellem Ingersoll and Emily Mellem, Samuel Evans and Kelsey Evans; three great-grandchildren, Blake Russell Evans, Mitchell David Scholl and Issiah Oscar Evans; one brother, Thomas Evans; and his dog, Jigs.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers. |
