** Gertrude H. Hoots
WATERLOO - Gertrude H. Hoots, 85, of Waterloo, formerly of Mason City, died Saturday (Jan. 30, 1999) at Covenant Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. David Anderson officiating. Interment will be in the Rockwell Cemetery.
Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Major-Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to service time at the church.
Other funeral arrangements are incomplete at the funeral home.
** Alexander Gabel
HAMPTON - Alexander Gabel, 83, died Saturday (Jan. 30, 1999) at the Hampton Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton, with the Rev. Jon Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery, Belmond.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until service time on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Alexander Gabel was born March 9, 1915, in Mason City.
Survivors include four sisters, Elizabeth Lepper of Belmond, Mary Stienwandt of San Lorenzo, Calif., Esther Cooper of Hampton, and Ann Shepard of Pontiac, Mich.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and one brother.
** Maxine Monroe
CHARLES CITY - Maxine Monroe, 73, died Sunday (Jan. 31, 1999) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home with the Rev. John Smith of the Trinity United Presbyterian Church, Indianola, officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery.
Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Hauser Funeral Home, where the family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. until service time on Wednesday.
The family suggests memorials to the John Monroe Junior Golf Classic which Maxine and John Sr. founded in 1968 for the youth of Charles City and the surrounding area.
Maxine Dorothy Cline Monroe was born Feb. 3, 1925, at Rockford.
Survivors include her husband, John Sr. of Charles City; two sons, John Jr. of Indianola, and Chris of San Diego, Calif.; two daughters, Gerrie Prickett of Indianola, and Ginny Lehmkuhl of Columbus, Neb.; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Gary Cline of Charles City, and Dale Cline of Webster City; and two sisters, Carole Stayner of Osage, and Mary Benedict of Garner.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers.

HAMPTON - Aleene B. Thompson, 95, died Sunday (Jan. 31, 1999) at the Sheffield Care Center, Sheffield.

BUFFALO CENTER - Stephen J. Waite, 86, died Friday (Jan. 29, 1999) at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Buffalo Center, with the Rev. James Cherry and the Rev. William Peake officiating. Interment will be held at 1:30 p.m. at the North Prairie Cemetery, Scarville.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Winter Funeral Home, Buffalo Center.
Stephen J. Waite was born Oct. 8, 1912, at Fort Dodge.
Survivors include his wife, Inga, of Buffalo Center; two sons, Richard and Jon, both of Paulsbo, Wash.; one daughter, Patricia Betten of New Hampton; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one brother, John Waite of Woodburn, Ore.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and three sisters.

** Lloyd Ferch
HOPKINS, Minn. - Lloyd Ferch, 76, of Hopkins, Minn., died Saturday (Jan. 30, 1999) at Methodist Hospital, St. Louis Park, Minn.
Interment is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. today at the Grandview Cemetery in Hopkins.
He was a veteran of World War II. He was a devoted father and husband. He enjoyed time with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Elenor Ferch; daughters, Diana Bredenburg of Cedar Rapids and Linda Frich, of St. Paul, Minn.; sons, Gary of Nora Springs, and Duane, of Hopkins.
He will be sorely missed by all.
** Peggy Carre Jenks
ST. CHARLES, Minn. - Peggy Carre Jenks, 75, of 509 E. 12th St., St. Charles, died Sunday (Jan. 31, 1999) at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, after a lengthy illness.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Methodist Church, St. Charles.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Hoff Funeral Home, 806 St. Charles Ave., St. Charles, Minn.
Peggy was born in Iowa Falls, Iowa, on Jan. 27, 1924, the daughter of Jennie and Tom Carre. The family moved to Manly where Peggy finished high school.
She was united in marriage to Perry Jenks to whom one son was born, Gregory Jenks.
Peggy was very active in the community. She enjoyed rug hooking and spending time with her granddaughters, Melina and Tessa.
She is survived by three sisters, Izetta Ryan, of Manly, Corrina Mutersbaugh, of Minneapolis, and Opal Pedersen, of Rockwell, Iowa; and one brother, Lawrence, of Pleasant Hill, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her mother, husband, and one brother, Marion, of Des Moines.

WATERLOO - Gertrude H. Hoots, 85, of 155 E. Ridgeway Ave., Waterloo, formerly of Mason City, died Saturday (Jan. 30, 1999) at the Covenant Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., with the Rev. David Anderson officiating. Interment will be in the Rockwell Cemetery, Rockwell.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City.
Memorials may be given to the Gertrude H. Hoots Memorial Fund or St. James Lutheran Church in her memory.
Gertrude Heloise Hoots was born Jan. 27, 1914, in rural Otter Tail County, Minn. to Oscar and Edla T. (Matti) Piippo. Gertrude attended schools in Otter Tail County, near New York Mills, Minn.
She helped raise her seven brothers and sisters when her mother passed away at age 16 and her father passed away when she was 18.
Gertrude came to Mason City in the fall of 1938. She married Herman John Hoots on Jan. 4, 1939, in Albert Lea, Minn. She worked at Weber's in the Drapery Department for 14 years. Gertrude has lived most of her life in Mason City. In 1995, she moved to Waterloo to be closer to her daughter.
Gertrude was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Mason City, V.F.W. Auxiliary, and Rebekah Lodge. Gertrude enjoyed doing community service for the VFW and was a volunteer for St. James Lutheran Church, calling on church members in the care centers.
Survivors include four daughters, Rachael McMillan and husband, Donald, of Waxahachie, Texas; Donna Gobeli and her husband, Jerry, of Phoenix; Marlys Becker, of Waterloo; and Judy Dutcher and her husband, James, of Rochester, Minn.; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Marvin Piippo, of Mason City and Einar Piippo, of New York Mills, Minn.; and one sister, Agnes Haavig, of New York Mills, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Herman J. Hoots; one infant son, Arthur James Hoots; three brothers and one sister.
** Michael Hedegard
OMAHA, Neb.- Michael Hedegard, 34, formerly of Plymouth, died Tuesday (Jan. 26, 1999) in Omaha.
Michael was born March 12, 1964, in Mason City. He was the son of Mavis Beenen, Plymouth, and Rodney Hedegard, Manly. He grew up in Plymouth.
For many years, Michael has been living in Des Moines doing cement work. Last year, he was transferred to Omaha, where he lived and worked.
Survivors include his parents; his son, Michael of Des Moines, who was his pride and joy; his sisters, Shelby Shackleton and Ed of Manly and Jenna Price and Jason of Manly; his paternal grandfather, Henry Hedegard of Plymouth; and aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Michael is also survived by the love of his life, Laurie Friest of Omaha.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, maternal grandmother and grandfather, and his good-time buddy, Rich Westendorf.
** Jon E. Young
FAIRMONT, Minn. - Jon E. Young, 50, died Friday (Jan. 29, 1999) at his home in Fairmont.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Blue Earth, Minn.
Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Lakeview Funeral Home, Fairmont, and will be held one hour prior to the service at the church today. A parish prayer service was held at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Jon Edward Young was born on March 16, 1948, in Mason City, the son of Earl and Anna (Boschert) Young. They moved to Fairmont in 1950 and Jon attended St. John Vianney Parochial School and graduated from Fairmont High School in 1967. Jon then attended the Jackson Vocational Technical College for carpentry.
He worked for a short time for the Lumber Yard in Winnebago before moving back to Fairmont. In Fairmont, Jon worked with his parents jointly and they ran Young Awning Service.
He was active in the Fairmont Fire Department from 1977 until his retirement in 1997. Jon was also a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Eagle's Club, Chamber of Commerce, Single's Again. He is one of the founding members of the Sisseton Sioux Railroad Club and helped with the Children Tractor Pedal Pulls on the local and state level.
Jon is survived by his special friend, Becky Fischer, and her three children, Rhonda, Renae and Robin, all of Fairmont; two sisters, Mary Ellen Smith of Portland, Ore., and Suzanne Frost and her husband, Jack, of Wescosville, Pa.; one brother, Robert Young and his wife, Patty, of Madelia; nieces and nephews, Melanie and Brad Werner, Scott, Mark, and Holly Frost, and Julia Young; four great-nieces and nephews, Coty and Shelby Werner, and Kyle and Valarie Frost; one uncle, Vince Boschert of Fairmont; one aunt, Geneva Anderson of Pine City, Minn.; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Anna Young.
** Myrtle Larson
CRYSTAL LAKE - Myrtle Larson, 90, of Crystal Lake, died Monday (Feb. 1, 1999) at the Westview Care Center, Britt.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kenneth Suetterlin officiating. Interment will be in Crystal Township Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Cataldo Funeral Home, Britt.
Myrtle Annette Larson was born May 1, 1908, at Forest City.
Survivors include her children, Sharon Golbuff, of West Bend and Thomas Larson, of Forest City; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lois Verhoef, of Forest City, and Uva Hanson, of Santa Ana, Calif.; and one brother, Vernon Thompson, of Bend, Ore.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one infant granddaughter, four brothers and three sisters.
** Ralph Ivan Lennie
MASON CITY - Ralph Ivan Lennie, 72, of 659 12th St. N. E., died Sunday (Jan. 31, 1999) at Hospice of North Iowa after a long illness.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Episcopal Church, 120 First St. N. E., Mason City, with the Rev. Robert Towner officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City.
Ralph Lennie was born Nov. 17, 1926, in Melcher. He graduated valedictorian and president of his class from the Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs, in 1946.
In 1949, he married Betty Asleson. They raised four children.
Ralph was last employed by and retired from Armour Foods. He loved fishing, traveling, boating, cooking and eating at Congregate Meals. He was a past member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, No. 3416, Mason City.
Survivors include Boyd Lennie and his wife, Jeannie, Plymouth, David Lennie, Mason City, Susan Schmitz, Mason City; grandchildren, Ryan VanArkle, Dustin and Carrie Lennie, Amy Draeger, Steve and Kelly Mitchell, Frank Schmitz, Mary Ruth Angle, and Spencer Dietrich; two brothers, Arthur Lennie, Plymouth, and Harvey Lennie, Viliska; two sisters, Jessie Sellings, Ottumwa, and Rosellane White, Harvey; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Ralph was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Lennie; his son, Clifford Lennie; and several brothers and sisters.

MASON CITY - Marjorie M. Billiet, 83, a former Mason City resident, died Monday, (Feb. 1, 1999) at her home in Tempe, Ariz.

** Mabel Kester
FOREST CITY - Mabel Kester, 86, of Forest City, died Tuesday (Feb. 2, 1999) at the Good Samaritan Center, Forest City.

** Agnes Pauline Amundson
KENSETT - Agnes Pauline Amundson, 92, of 985 380th St., died Monday (Feb. 1, 1999) at the Lutheran Retirement Home at Northwood.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett, with the Rev. Sam Hernes officiating.
Family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Conner Colonial Chapel, Northwood.
Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake.
Memorials may be given in memory of Agnes P. Amundson to Elk Creek Lutheran Church, Hospice of North Iowa, or the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.
Agnes was born Dec. 28, 1906, at Radcliffe, in Hardin County, the daughter of Christen and Martha (Osmundson) Sampson. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, rural Garden City.
Agnes married Leroy Amundson on July 5, 1927, in Mason City. On July 5, 1998, they celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary. They farmed in the Hanlontown and Kensett area for 62 years. She was a member of the Elk Creek Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid circle. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, crocheting, playing cards, visiting with neighbors, and her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed the fishing trips with her husband and family.
Agnes is survived by her husband, Leroy Amundson, Kensett; one daughter, Hazel Russel, Fort Myers Beach, Fla.; three sons, Leonard Amundson and his wife, Mary Lou, St. Ansgar, Chester Amundson and his wife, Wilma, Fertile, and Howard Amundson, Kensett; 11 grandchildren, Robert Sjostrom, Steven Russel, Michael Amundson, Lewis Amundson, James Amundson, Donna Mueller, Rhonda Nowell, Susan Amundson, Jan VanHorn, Sara Amundson and Eric Amundson; and 12 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Mae Wegner, Fort Myers, Fla., and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, eight brothers, two sisters and several nieces and nephews.

EAGLE GROVE - Doris I. Godfrey, 86, of Eagle Grove, died Tuesday (Feb. 2, 1999) at the Rotary Ann Home, Eagle Grove.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, with the Rev. William E. Ballard officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove.
Visitation with the family present will be held from 4 to 6:30 p.m. today at the Willim Funeral Home, Eagle Grove.
Doris Irene Godfrey was born on Oct. 24, 1912, in Eagle Grove.
Survivors include four daughters, Connie Jorgensen, of Eagle Grove, Bonnie Sunner, of Clear Lake; Cynthia Metcalf, of Boone, and Mary Hogenson, of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Madeline Fromm, of Eagle Grove.

WHITTEMORE - Isabelle "Tim" Kain Loebach, 85, of Whittemore, died Monday (Feb. 1, 1999) at the Heritage Nursing Home, Bancroft.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Michael's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Paul Eisele officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery, Whittemore.
Visitation will be held from 2:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, with a Catholic Daughters of the Americas rosary at 3 p.m. and a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m.
Isabelle Loebach was born May 5, 1913, in Algona.
Survivors include four sons, Joe Loebach, of Burt, John Loebach, of Minneapolis, Minn., David Loebach, of Nampa, Idaho, and Leonard Loebach, of Whittemore; and two daughters, Mary Timmers, of Indianapolis, Ind. and Ann Schwetye, of Clayton, Mo.; 19 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

CLEAR LAKE - Mary Hazel Clute, 64, of Clear Lake, died Tuesday (Feb. 2, 1999) at her home.

** Jack R. Hepp
CLEAR LAKE - Jack R. Hepp, 86, of 1706 W. 7th Ave. N., died Thursday (Jan. 28, 1999) at the Heritage Care Center, Mason City.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church. Military honors will be held by the Clear Lake V.F.W. Inurnment will be held at a later date in the Clear Lake Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials in memory of Jack R. Hepp to the University of Iowa Hawkeye Fund, P.O. Box 4550, Iowa City, Iowa 52244, or United Methodist Church, Clear Lake. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
Jack was born Sept. 13, 1912, in Estherville, the son of Jacob and Rebecca Ann (Imler) Hepp. He attended school in Estherville. Jack served in the Navy during World War II as a chief petty officer.
Jack married Margery Jacobson on Nov. 15, 1941, in Blair, Neb. They made their home in Iowa City, until moving to their present home in Clear Lake in 1955.
Jack worked for Duesenberg Construction, Clear Lake, for over 27 years as Superintendent of Highway Crews until 1974, when he retired.
Jack was well known for his avid support of the Iowa Hawkeyes and attended all football and basketball games and traveled all over the country to attend them.
Jack was a member of the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake; XYZ Club and Clear Lake V.F.W.
Jack is survived by his wife, Margery Hepp, of Clear Lake; two sisters, Jenny Warrington of Mesa, Ariz., and Verna (Tamer) Logue of Long Beach, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Bessie Graff, Jessie Hackett and Ivy Blair.

** Eleanor Flora Stark
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Eleanor Flora Stark (Peters) was born Oct. 8, 1925 in Wailuku, Maui, and went out with our Lord on Jan. 14, 1999, at University Medical Center, Las Vegas, Nev.
Eleanor was the ultimate caretaker and provider to her family, a caring and compassionate wife and mother. She lived solely to care for her family, friends and church.
She was married in the St. Anthony Church on Oct. 8, 1941. She worked a short time for the VFW Maui, Liberty House, Honolulu, and The Landing and F.W. Woolworth in Kahului.
She lived with her husband at Kaneohe Naval Air Station; Faribault, Minn.; Itazuke Air Base, Japan; Chanute A.F.B., Ill.; Recruiting Service, Mason City, Iowa from 1958 to October of 1963, where he received a medical discharge after more than 25 years of service.
She moved to Council Bluffs (while her husband worked for the U.S. Postal Terminal), then back to the Mason City Post Office when that terminal was closed.
In 1967, she moved to Walnut, Calif. and Glendora, Calif., as her father, John Peters passed away and she cared for her mother, Pauline Peters. She then moved back to Kahului with her mother.
She later moved to Altus, Okla., from 1990-1991. From 1991 to 1992, she resided in Mason City. With advice from her doctor, she moved to Nevada.
In October of 1993, she had her first heart failure and had been in and out of many medical facilities until her death on Jan. 14, 1999.
Visitation was held on Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, at St. Anthony Chapel, Wailuku, Maui, with a Mass. Burial services were held at Makawao Veterans Cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, Ronald E. Stark, of 8405 Eddy Stone Ave., Las Vegas, Nev. 89117-1227, formerly of Faribault, a former cook and chief commissary steward VJ3, Puunene air base, Maui, June 1940; daughter, Jeanette Mae (Hansen), an R.N. of Middletown, Calif.; daughter, Cheryl Jean (Steele) of Gaithersburg, Md.; a son, James Richard (B.S.U.H.) of Oahu, Hawaii; daughter, Paulette Louis (Reyes) of Kihei, Hawaii; a sister, Thelma Freitas, of Chino Hills; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. |

MASON CITY - Marjorie M. Billiet, 83, a former Mason City resident, died Monday (Feb. 1, 1999) at her home in Tempe, Ariz.
Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Rockwell Cemetery. Officiating will be the Rev. Stephen Meyer of Sacred Hearth Catholic Church.
There will be no visitation. Fullerton Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
Marjorie was born on May 12, 1915, in Mason City, the daughter of Chester Arthur and Elizabeth "Casey" Gunderson. She graduated from Holy Family School.
She was united in marriage to Gordon F. Billiet on June 14, 1938, in Mason City, and to this union were born two children. They spent several years in Mason City, then moved to Memphis, Tenn., for 20 years and has spent the last 30 years in Tempe, Ariz.
In her earlier years she spent a great deal of time playing golf and bowling, maintaining her health until just recently. She loved being with her family and grandchildren and was a member of St. Edwards Catholic Church in Phoenix.
Those thankful for sharing her life were her daughter, Judi B. and her husband, John MacGregor, of Brea, Calif.; her son, Robert and his wife, Zinnie Billiet, of Port Orchard, Wash.; and her four grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Gordon, on Aug. 18, 1987.

Agnes was born Dec. 28, 1906, at Radcliffe, in Hardin County, the daughter of Christen and Martha (Osmundson) Sampson. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, rural Garden City.
Agnes married Leroy Amundson on July 5, 1927, in Mason City. On July 5, 1998, they celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary. They farmed in the Hanlontown and Kensett area for 62 years.
She was a member of the Elk Creek Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid circle.
She enjoyed gardening, flowers, crocheting, playing cards, visiting with neighbors, and her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed the fishing trips with her husband and family.
Agnes is survived by her husband, Leroy Amundson, Kensett; one daughter, Hazel Russel, Fort Myers Beach, Fla.; three sons, Leonard Amundson and his wife, Mary Lou, St. Ansgar, Chester Amundson and his wife, Wilma, Fertile, and Howard Amundson, Kensett; 11 grandchildren, Roberta Sjostrom, Stephen Russel, Michael Amundson, Lewis Amundson, James Amundson, Donna Mueller, Rhonda Nowell, Susan Amundson, Jane VanHorn, Sara Amundson and Eric Amundson; and 12 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Mae Wegner, Fort Myers, Fla., and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, eight brothers, two sisters and several nieces and nephews.

Nellie loved baking for her grandkids, especially doughnuts and oatmeal cookies; she also enjoyed crocheting and making baby quilts. She liked to dance and was always a happy person.

Mary worked 14 years as a residential aide at Opportunity Village and Oakwood Care Center. She enjoyed country music, watching soap operas and the Green Bay Packers. She loved spending time with her granddaughter.
Survivors include her son, Robert Clute and his special friend, Chassidy Martin, Clear Lake; one granddaughter, Brianna Skye Clute, Clear Lake; one brother, Henry Harms, Iowa Falls; one sister, Dorothy Moore, Clear Lake; a special friend, Jack Burgess, Mason City; and several nieces and nephews.

Zilpha Leota Steffensen, daughter of Frank and Emily Durant Oleson, was born Aug. 13, 1904, on the Olesen farm in Madison Township, south of Forest City, Iowa. She was baptized at a young age in the Methodist Church in Forest City, Iowa, and in 1919, she formally joined that congregation.
Zilpha was united in marriage to Arthur C. Steffensen at the Methodist parsonage in Clear Lake, Iowa. Arthur and Zilpha started farming near Miller, Iowa. They lived on the Steffensen homestead near Forest City until 1936 and from there moved to Joice, Iowa, where they completed their family of 11 children. In 1942, the family moved to the Buffalo Center community. In 1955, Zilpha purchased a home in Buffalo Center where she lived until 1991.
After moving to town, Zilpha began serving ice cream at the Roller Skating Rink and then was employed at the local Center Cafe, where she worked for many years. Zilpha was a friend of many and always had a pleasing smile to those around her.
Long after she retired, Zilpha enjoyed entertaining her many friends at coffee parties in her home. It was not unusual for her to be honored by family and friends with three or four birthday parties every August.
For the past 50 years, Zilpha had been a faithful member of the United Methodist Church, of Buffalo Center, where she was also a valued member of the United Methodist Women and Mary Circle until her health started to fail and she entered the Timely Mission Nursing Home. Zilpha's love of flowers prompted her family to always have flowers in her room.
Zilpha is survived by four sons, DeVere and wife, Clarine, of Leland, Cecil and wife, Iola, of Buffalo Center, Don and wife, Barb, of Des Moines, and Marvin and wife, Shelda, of West Des Moines; five daughters, Elayne Yates, of Brooklyn Park, Minn., Betty Mitchell, of Mankato, Minn., Mae and husband, Duane Legg, of Gabbs, Nev., Jeanette and husband, Markley Ennen, of Buffalo Center, and JoAnn and husband, Tom Costigan, of Litchfield, Minn. Also surviving are two daughters-in-law, Susan Steffensen, of Wilmington, N.C., and Delores Steffensen, of Buffalo Center; as well as 51 grandchildren; 85 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. Zilpha is also survived by sisters-in-law, Wilna Oleson, of Belvedere, S.C., and Florence Oleson, of the Hubbard Care Center; nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Zilpha was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur, in 1950; sons, Garth in 1990 and Clyde in 1997; and sons-in-law, Robert Mitchell, Oscar Anderson, and Gerald Yates; as well as three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; her parents; two sisters; and six brothers.

Dorothy Krafka was born July 28, 1923, in Chelsea, Iowa, the daughter of William and Caroline (Kasal) Zeman. She graduated from Belle Plaine High School.
Dorothy married Warren V. Krafka on Sept. 12, 1942, in Rossville, Ga. The Krafka's moved to Mason City in 1956, where they have lived ever since.
Dorothy was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ. Dorothy enjoyed sewing, reading and spending time in Canada during the Summer.
Dorothy is survived by her husband, Warren V. She was united in marriage to Oscar M. Russ and they had three children. Oscar passed away May 8, 1954.
On March 1, 1958, Lillian married Odin Johnson at Zion Lutheran Church, in Rake.
Lillian enjoyed gardening, reading and traveling with her husband. Her greatest enjoyment, however, was spending time with her family.

Michael Dean Mehmen was born March 20, 1957, at the Cedar Valley Hospital, in Charles City, a son of Frank C. and Irene M. (Eliasen) Mehmen and died Wednesday (Feb. 3, 1999) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.
He received his education in the Greene Public Schools, graduating in 1975. He was first employed at Key Wholesale and later worked in the construction business. For the past 15 years, he has been self employed in the construction trade.
Music has played an important part in his life, as a drummer in high school and later as a member of the Ray Holtz Combo and also playing with Star Cross, a local rock band. He was an avid Green Bay Packers fan.
Mike was baptized April 21, 1967, at the First Presbyterian Church, in Greene.
Living family members include his wife, Peggy, and daughter, Sarah, both of Mason City; his son, Matthew, of Blaine, Minn.; his mother and stepfather, Irene and Andy Etzen, of Greene; his maternal grandfather, Harry, and his wife, Ina Eliasen, of Charles City; one sister, Paula Hess Engels and her husband, Kenny Engels, of Nora Springs; a stepsister, Linda and her husband, Jeff Bohl, of Dougherty; a stepbrother, Jerry and his wife, Debra Etzen, of Parker, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Greene.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Reid's Funeral Chapel, Greene, with a Scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m., followed by a rosary service.
Mildred Susan Kaiser was born Aug. 24, 1910, in Lexington, Ill.
Living family members include her husband, C.S. "Mac" Kaiser, of Greene; two daughters, Nancy Joan Bellomy, of Deer River, Minn., and Vikki Sterling, of Bremerton, Wash.; two sons, Dale, of Champaign, Ill., and Terry, of Black Diamond, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother, Roy Henline, of Greene; two sisters, Jessie Crabb, of Lakewood, Calif., and Dorothy Richardson, of Cincinnati, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and four half brothers.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Mildred Susan Kaiser Memorial Fund in care of the family.
** Donald Ellis Burk
BELMOND — Donald Ellis Burk, 79, passed away Thursday (Feb. 4, 1999) at his home in Belmond.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Goodell, with the Rev. Curtis DeVance officiating. Interment will be in Amsterdam Cemetery, Goodell.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond, and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.
Donald, the son of Wilmer Ellis and Elizabeth Catherine Brannan Burk, was born June 10, 1919, at the Ruby Hill Farm near Goodell, Iowa. He grew up in the Goodell area. He attended school in Goodell, graduating from the Goodell High School in 1937.
On June 14, 1939, he was united in marriage to Doris Davis at the United Methodist Church, in Kanawha. Don farmed for 50 years on the family Century Farm near Goodell. He also managed a 10,000-chicken house for 25 years and milked cows for 30 years. Don was a 4-H leader for 15 years and a Pioneer Sales Representative for 25 years.
Donald loved farming, especially working around animals. He liked to look for deer and other wildlife. He also enjoyed baseball, playing in his youth, watching sports on TV and watching his children and grandchildren play sports. The many fishing trips in Canada with his family were special times for him. In 1989, the couple moved into Belmond and Donald continued to farm.
He was a member of the Rainbow Swingers Square Dancing Club. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Goodell, serving many offices, most notably being Steward for 30 years. He was also a member of the Men's Brotherhood at the church, in which he helped with many soup suppers and church breakfasts.
Donald is survived by his wife, Doris; his daughter, Patty Kuhlers, of Clear Lake; two sons, Bob and his wife, Karen, of Story City, and Tom and his wife, Jackie, of Goodell; six grandchildren, Krista Pals, Kent Kuhlers, Kari Mennenga, Phil Burk, Ryan Paulsen and Nathan Burk; six great-grandchildren, Julia, Alyssa, and Brianne Pals, Shelby Mennenga, Colton and Olivia Kuhlers; a brother, Gerald and his wife, Nellie, of Goodell; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a son-in-law, Marlyn Kuhlers.
** Henry O. Gjellefald
FOREST CITY — Henry O. Gjellefald, 103, of Forest City, died Wednesday (Feb. 3, 1999) at the Good Samaritan Center, Forest City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Forest City, with the Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating. Burial will be in the West Prairie Lutheran Cemetery, near Thompson.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, Forest City.
Henry Orlando Gjellefald was born on a farm four miles south of Thompson, Iowa, on Dec. 18, 1895, the son of Nels O. and Minnie (Halverson) Gjellefald. He started grade school at the Indvik School in Linden Township and moved with his parents to a 20-acre tract on the west edge of Forest City. He graduated from Forest City High School and attended Waldorf Academy. He received a Business Degree from Luther Academy in Albert Lea, Minn.
Henry started in the banking business in 1915 at the age of 20. He was on the staff of the Forest City National Bank, the predecessor to the Forest City Bank & Trust. In 1917, Henry was drafted by the United States Army and served in World War I. He trained at Camp Dodge near Des Moines and was stationed near Little Rock, Ark., before being shipped overseas. He spent 12 or 13 days aboard a troop transport which dodged submarines on its way across the Atlantic Ocean. Henry arrived in England in August, crossed the English Channel and served four months in France.
Upon his return to Forest City, he purchased his first car, a Model T Ford, and again joined the Forest City National Bank staff. In addition to serving as assistant cashier, he waited on customers at the windows and occasionally granted loans. He also clerked farm sales, often in sub-zero-degree weather. The bank hours when he started were from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. six days a week.
Henry loved to travel, visiting Norway several times, and every country in Europe, except Russia. He also traveled extensively in the United States.
He loved to fish and once caught an 11 ½ pound Northern in the Winnebago River.
He retired from the Forest City Bank & Trust in February of 1972 after 55 years of service. He continued to work part-time until 1988, for a total of over 71 years.
He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and the American Legion Post No. 121 in Forest City.
He is survived by a niece, Vivian Schurfray, of Evanston, Ill., and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Arthur Reuben; and a sister and brother-in-law, Alma and M.F. Zack.
** Catherine Anne Woodruff
MARBLE ROCK — Catherine Anne Woodruff, 73, formerly of Marble Rock, died Thursday (Feb. 4, 1999) at the O'Hare Regional Rehabilitation Center, in Denver, Colo.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Reid's Funeral Chapel, Greene, with Pastor Miles Grismore, of Faith Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Westside Cemetery, in Marble Rock.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of services on Wednesday at Reid's Funeral Chapel, where other arrangements are incomplete.
