** Annette "Ann" E. Miller

MASON CITY — Annette "Ann" E. Miller, 71, of 671 Third St. N.E., died Monday (Feb. 15, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home and visitation will continue until service time Wednesday. The Ladies of the Moose will have a prayer service at 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to the Annette E. Miller Memorial Fund.

Annette "Ann" E. Miller was born Dec. 20, 1927, in Northwood, Iowa, the daughter of Palmer and Georgina (Knudson) Butler. Annette attended Northwood schools and country school in rural Northwood. Ann worked for the Northwood Bakery. She then cleaned for various businesses in Mason City such as Kabrick Distributing for 30 years and Gamble Robinson for 31 years.

Ann married Donald Miller on May 7, 1966, in Northwood, living in Mason City for 33 years.

Ann enjoyed bingo, playing cards, flowers, dancing and baking goodies. She also had a great sense of humor and loved playing tricks.

Ann was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Moose Lodge, and VFW Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband, Donald Miller, Mason City; a daughter, Pam Shannon and her husband, Harry, Mason City; three grandchildren, Marc Shannon, Heather Shannon and Jodi Shannon, all of Mason City; three sisters, Genevieve Methus and her husband, Jay, Northwood, Margaret Weingart and her husband, Johnny, Manly, and Shirley Olson and her husband, Norman, Northwood; one brother, Melbourne Butler and his wife, Carmen, Northwood; several nieces and nephews; and very special neighbors, Pete and Joan Gribben, Mason City.

Ann was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Earl Butler.

MASON CITY — Rosanne Arp, 59, of 35 Concord Lane, died Sunday (Feb. 14, 1999) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services for family and close friends will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Pam Flanigan of Grace United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Mason City.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and until the time of the service on Friday.

** Hilda M. Jensen

MASON CITY — Hilda M. Jensen, 98, of 501 S. Kentucky Ave., died Saturday (Feb. 13, 1999) at Heritage Care Center.

Graveside services and interment will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Elmwood Cemetery, Mason City, with the Rev. Miles Grismore of the Faith Baptist Church officiating.

Friends may call from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City.

Hilda was born July 25, 1900, in Thornton, Iowa, the daughter of Nels and Augnita (Rungstad) Christensen. She attended school at Thornton.

As a young adult Hilda moved with her family to Milltown, Wis. She married Alvin Jensen in 1920. A few years later she returned to the Mason City area where she lived until her death.

Hilda is survived by her daughter, Evelyn Davis of Wellesley, Mass.; one grandson, Warren Davis; one granddaughter, Carol Hirsch and her husband, Robert; three great-grandchildren, Neil, Jamie and Ashley Hirsch; a nephew, Dale Christensen of Mille Lacs, Minn., and two nieces, Joyce Losee and Lamae Holmen of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother and two sisters.

CHARLES CITY — W. Gene Robertson, 76, died Sunday (Feb. 14, 1999) at his home in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Sunny Side Chapel and Funeral Home, Highway 18 S., Charles City. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Garden in rural Charles City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Sunny Side Chapel and Funeral Home, and resume at 9 a.m. until the time of the service.

OSAGE — Gene H. Perrin, 66, died Monday (Feb. 15, 1999) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage.

** Everett H. Peters

CLEAR LAKE — Everett H. Peters, 81, of 18374 Grouse Ave., died Saturday (Feb. 13, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. The Rev. Dean Hess and the Rev. Kermit Roisen will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City. Military honors will be provided by the Clear Lake V.F.W.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution are invited to do so in his name.

Everett was born May 12, 1917, in Mason City, the son of Henry and Vesta (McElroy) Peters. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1935. He was employed at the Pfaff Baking Company in Mason City until leaving for California in 1942 to work in the ship yards. In 1943 he joined the Merchant Marines and served the country during World War II. In 1945 he returned to Iowa and farmed with his brother-in-law in the West Bend area.

In 1947 he moved to Lake Park, Iowa, to farm. It was there that he met his wife. On Dec. 3, 1949, he was united in marriage to Leah Banning at the Presbyterian Church in Spirit Lake. He continued farming in the area until moving to Clear Lake in 1958. In addition to farming in Clear Lake, he was employed at the State Brand Creamery. For several years in the 1970s the couple owned and operated the Lake Crest Cafe. After his retirement, Everett worked part time in the building trade industry. He worked on tractors as a hobby; he also enjoyed working with wood, gardening and traveling.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the American Legion.

Everett is survived by his wife, Leah Peters, of rural Clear Lake; four children, David Scott Peters of Atlanta, Ga., Coralene Hall and her husband, Brian, of Clear Lake, Michael Peters and his wife, Robin, of Iowa City, and Steven Peters of Waverly, Iowa; 10 grandchildren, Seth Peters, Lane Peters, Kyle Peters, Zach Hall, Ashley Hall, Alexis Hall, Jordan Peters, Aaron Peters, Stephan Peters and Nathan Peters. Another grandchild, Hannah Peters, is due in May. He is also survived by two sisters, Marian Smed of Sacramento, Calif., and Lucille Cooper and her husband, Bill, of Boise, Idaho; three brothers, Lloyd Peters and his wife, Irene, of Marshalltown, Iowa, Merlyn Peters and his wife, Shirley, of Macomb, Ill., and Richard Peters of Boise, Idaho; two sisters-in-law, Donna Richardson of Cambridge, Iowa, and Millie Peters of Rogers, Ark.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Don and Walter Peters; and an infant daughter, Maxine.

** Harold "Jim" Raymond Higdon

BRITT — Harold "Jim" Raymond Higdon, 97, passed away Saturday (Feb. 13, 1999) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, Britt, with the Rev. Dave Higdon and the Rev. Robert Dodge officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Britt.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Ewing Funeral Chapel, Britt, and will resume one hour prior to services at the church Wednesday.

Harold, the son of Shotwell and Malinda Salstrom Higdon, was born Sept. 6, 1901, on a farm near Stilson, Iowa, in Hancock County. He attended Boone Township Country School, Britt Community High School and Iowa State University in Ames.

Harold was united in marriage with Minnie Fox on March 22, 1924. Following their marriage the couple made their home in Britt where Harold was a carpenter for many years. Harold took great pride in making fine cabinets and enjoyed flying his own airplane. In the early 1900s, he erected windmills on area farms; many of these windmills are still standing. He was a very knowledgeable, self-educated man.

Harold joined the Odd Fellows in 1922 and served as president of the Britt Community School Board from 1948 until 1952.

Harold is survived by four daughters, Marian Dingman and her husband, George, of Eden Prairie, Minn., LaVon Larson and her husband, Arvin, of Wesley, Iowa, Carmen Mower and her husband, Gene, of Chippewa Falls, Wis., and Shirley Nussbaum and her husband, Joe, of Corsicana, Texas; two sons, James and his wife Esther, of Britt, and Charles and his wife, Mavis, of Redding, Calif.; 17 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Paul and his wife, Daisy, of Granger, Ind.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Minnie, on April 16, 1995; one infant son; and two brothers.

** Bernald L. "Murph" Venz

CHARLES CITY — Bernald L. "Murph" Venz, 67, of 300 Fifth St., died Sunday (Feb. 14, 1999) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City, with the Rev. Dennis D. Niezwaag, pastor of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Charles City, officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. today at the Hauser Funeral Home where the family will greet friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Visitation will resume at 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday.

WINSTED, Conn. — Nels Nader Stumo, 2, died Wednesday (Feb. 10, 1999) at his home in Winsted.

** Leta Joan Bohl

LAKE MILLS — Leta Joan Bohl was born on July 14, 1930, at Viola, Iowa, the daughter of Darrell and Ruby (Rummens) James. The James family moved to a farm near Buffalo Center in 1931. She graduated from Buffalo Center High School in 1948.

She was baptized in Buffalo Center in October 1950. On July 2, 1948, she was united in marriage to Dick Bohl at the Methodist Church in Blue Earth, Minn. They lived in Buffalo Center until July 2, 1966, when they moved to Lake Mills.

She joined Asbury United Methodist Church in Lake Mills and enjoyed attending church and the many activities until 1990 when complications from cancer left her unable to continue attending on an ordinary basis.

Her hobbies included collecting antiques, sewing and spending time in one of her beautiful flower gardens.

Joan passed away Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, in route to North Iowa Mercy Hospital. She was 68 years, 7 months, 12 days old.

Joan is survived by her husband of 50 years, Dick Bohl, of Lake Mills; two sons, Rick and his wife, Mary Bohl, of Cedaredge, Colo., and Tim and his wife, Kathy Bohl, of Minocqua, Wis.; four grandchildren, Kelly Bohl of Grandjunction, Colo., Teri Bohl of Denver, Mandy Bohl, whom Dick and Joan raised, of Sioux City, Iowa, and Mollie Bohl of Mason City; five brothers, Jim and his wife, Shirley James, Dean and his wife, Joan James, Ron and his wife, Barb James, all of Buffalo Center, Ernie and his wife, Bonnie James, of Alta, Iowa, Don and his wife, Linda James, of Forest City; two sisters, Lois Graft of West Branch, and Carol and her husband, Don Griffiths, of Lake Mills; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Darrell and Ruby James; one grandson, Michael Bohl; one brother and sister-in-law, Ed and Jan James; and a brother-in-law, LeRoy Graft.

Joan loved life and fought so hard for so long. She will be missed by everyone she touched!

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, at Asbury United Methodist Church, Lake Mills, with the Rev. Jeanne Martin officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Memorials may be directed to Asbury United Methodist Church and cancer research.

** G. "Bud" Phipps

KANSAS CITY, Mo.— H. G. "Bud" Phipps, 79, of Kansas City, Mo., formerly of Mason City, died Sunday (Feb. 14, 1999) at the Life Care Center of Overland Park, Kan.

To celebrate Mr. Phipps' life, a gathering will be held at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara Phipps and Robert Strom. The family suggests contributions to the Alzheimer's Association, St. James Lutheran Church or the Salvation Army Adult Day Care Program.

Mr. Phipps was born in Cherokee, Iowa. He owned Hale-Phipps Motors in Mason City for 25 years before retiring. He was an active member of St. James Lutheran Church; an Army veteran of World War II; a member of the Mason City Chamber of Commerce, the Elks Club, and the Masonic Lodge; and was an avid golfer. Most importantly, he was a gentle and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.

He married Martha Bruchner Dec. 16, 1944, in Glendale, Calif. She preceded him in death on Sept. 22, 1997.

Survivors include a son, Mark Phipps, Raleigh, N. C.; a daughter, Barbara Phipps and her husband, Robert Strom, Kansas City, Mo; four grandchildren, Bradley and Joseph Buell and Mason and Lauren Phipps; a brother, William Phipps, Redding, Calif.; two sisters, Martha Lorenzen, Long Beach, Calif. and Alice English, Glendale, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

The family thanks his many friends and family for their friendship and support over the years of his illness. (Arrangements completed by the Amos Family Chapel, Shawnee, Kan.)

STRATFORD — Lorene Helgevold, 94, died Sunday (Feb. 14, 1999) at the Stratford Care Center.

LAWLER — Leonard William Hoey, 86, of Lawler formerly of Waucoma, died Sunday (Feb. 14, 1999) at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Lawler, with the Rev. Marvin Salz celebrating the Mass.

Visitation was Monday, Feb.15, at Larkin-Martin-Hugeback Funeral Home, Lawler.

OSAGE — Gene H. Perrin, 66, died Monday (Feb. 15, 1999) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, Osage, with the Rev. Jerry Newland officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery with military rites performed by the Osage American Legion Post No. 278.

GARNER — Abbie Kral, 89, died Tuesday (Feb. 16, 1999) at the Concord Care Center, Garner.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Boniface Catholic Church with the Rev. John W. Hemann officiating. Interment will be at St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Duncan.

Visitation will be held from 3:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St. A Rosary Society rosary will begin at 4:30 p.m. and a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Abbie Rose Kral, the daughter of Fred and Emma (Wellik) Jakoubek, was born Sept. 10, 1909, on a farm in Garfield Township northwest of Garner. After attending school at Hayfield, she worked at home and for various neighbors as a housekeeper.

On Oct. 9, 1934, she was married to Joseph Kral at St. Boniface Catholic Church. They lived in Duncan and then farmed northwest of Garner. In December of 1949, they moved into Garner. Abbie worked at Garner-Hayfield Community Schools as a cook for several years.

After her husband, Joe, passed away, she continued to live in her home. Due to ill health, she moved to Concord Care Center in March of 1997. Abbie enjoyed baking, gardening, knitting, crocheting and raising flowers especially her African violets.

She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Rosary Society, International Affairs Circle and a charter member of W. S. Homemakers Club where she had been a member for almost 50 years.

She is survived by her son, Robert Kral and his wife, Marilyn, of Garner; four grandchildren, Stephen Kral of Garner and his special friend, Ronda Brozik, Thomas Kral of Garner and his special friend, Debra Juhl, Judy Webb and her husband, Mike, of Warner Robins, Ga., and Linda Kral of Ames; a great-grandson, Shane Webber; three sisters, Helen Osheim of Omaha, Neb., Dorothy Nedved of Mason City and Eleanor Nelson and her husband, LaVerne, of Clear Lake; a brother William Jakoubek and his wife, Emma, of Garner; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dec. 11, 1983; an infant daughter, Evelyn Margaret Kral; and her parents.

NORTHWOOD — James L. Taylor, 100, died Monday (Feb. 15, 1999) at Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood.

Memorial services will be at a later date. Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Northwood, is in charge of all arrangements.

** Peggy Ann Axdahl

NORA SPRINGS — Peggy Ann Axdahl, 39, formerly of Nora Springs, died Friday (Feb. 12, 1999) in New Hampton.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. today at Faith Lutheran Church, Sioux Rapids, with the Rev. LeRoy Riemer officiating. Burial will be in Scandinavian Cemetery, Alta, Iowa. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Nora Springs, with Pastor Ruth Hansen and the Rev. Richard Pippert officiating.

Visitation was from 6 to 8 Tuesday, Feb. 16, at Sliefert Funeral Home, Sioux Rapids, which handled all arrangements.

Peggy Ann Axdahl was born on March 6, 1959, in Sioux Falls, S. D., to Morris and Joan Johnson. She was baptized at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, Iowa. She spent the first four years of her life in Larchwood, Iowa, before moving to Sioux Rapids in 1963. She was confirmed at Faith Lutheran Church in 1973.

Following graduation from Sioux Rapids High School in 1977, she entered Iowa State University where she received her bachelor's degree in elementary education in 1981.

For a short time she lived in Bondorant and Altoona and then moved to Nora Springs, where she was a substitute teacher and worked in the Head Start program. In 1996 she became the Media Specialist for the North Winnesheik School and was currently working to complete her master's degree.

Peggy was an avid reader, enjoyed playing the piano and was a devoted mother to her children.

Peggy is survived by her son, Bradley of Nora Springs; a daughter, Ashley of Decorah; her mother, Joan Johnson of Sioux Rapids; two brothers, Tom Johnson of West Des Moines and Ted Johnson and his wife, Sharon, of Urbandale; one sister, Pamela McKeever and her husband, Tom, of Mukwonage, Wis.; and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, Morris Johnson.

WOOLSTOCK — Mildred M. Williams, 89, died Monday (Feb. 15, 1999) at the Crestview Manor Nursing Home in Webster City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Willim Funeral Home, Eagle Grove, with Oscar Davis, CLS, officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove.

FOREST CITY — Clarence Hawkes, 97, died Monday (Feb. 15, 1999) at Good Samaritan Center, Forest City.

Clarence A. Hawkes was born in Forest City on July 27, 1901, the son of Alfred and Mary (Woodiswiss) Hawkes. He graduated from Forest City High School in 1920.

He was united in marriage to Esther Henn. After Esther's death Clarence married Blanche Schleusner on Oct. 13, 1956.

Clarence worked in the hotel and restaurant business. He owned and operated a pool hall for over 35 years, retiring in 1955. He was a member for 50 year of the AFAM Masonic Lodge and the Za-Ga-Zip Shrine Temple in Des Moines.

Clarence enjoyed playing cards with his family and friends. He died at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City on Feb. 15, 1999, at the age of 97 years.

Clarence is remembered by a special friend, Ovila Metzger of Forest City; dear friends John and Deb Haugen of Klemme; three brothers-in-law and their spouses, L.E. "Bud" and Marge Schleusner of Garner, Bernard and Jane Schleusner of North Branch, Minn., Dennis and Myrtle Schleusner of Austin, Minn.; three great nephews, Doug and Greg Smith of Indiana and Tom Smith of Maine.

Clarence was preceded in death by his parents; wives, Esther and Blanche; two brothers, Lloyd and Fletcher; and a sister, Ardyth.

WINSTED, CT. — Nels Nader Stumo, 2, of 60 Hillside Ave., Winsted, Ct., died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999, at his home. He was born in New Britian, Ct., on Dec. 5, 1996, son of Nadia Milleron and Michael Stumo.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Adnaan Stumo and Torleif Stumo, of Winsted; and one sister, Samya Stumo, of Winsted.

Paternal grandparents are Charles and Mary Stumo, of Northwood, Iowa. Maternal grandparents are Laura Nader and Norman Milleron, of Berkeley, Calif. Paternal great-grandparents are William and Gladys Holmlund, of Lake Mills, Iowa; maternal great-grandmother is Julia Stumo, of Northwood, Iowa.

Nels was preceded in death by his great-grandfather, Gerhard Stumo.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at Elk Creek Lutheran Church, Kensett, Iowa. The Rev. Sam Hernes will be officiating. Burial will take place prior to the services in Elk Creek Lutheran Cemetery.

MASON CITY — Rosanne Arp, 59, of 35 Concord Lane, died Sunday (Feb. 14, 1999) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center, East Campus.

Funeral services will be held for family and friends at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Pam Flanigan of Grace United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home and until time of services on Friday.

Rosanne Arp was born Oct. 18, 1939, in Ladysmith, Wisconsin, the daughter of Chester and Gladys (Mautner) Crotteau. At a young age, the family moved to West Allis, Wis., where she graduated from high school. It was there that she met Wayne Arp and was married to him Aug. 8, 1964. In 1979 they moved to Mason City with their three children.

Rosanne kept busy caring for and loving her family as well as making many quilts and other craft items. She worked in the Mason City High School Cafeteria for 15 years.

Rosanne is survived by her husband, Wayne Arp, of Mason City, Iowa; sons, David Arp, of Mason City, Iowa; Darren Arp, of Canton, Missouri; daughter, Dawn Arp, of Denver, Colorado; mother, Gladys Crotteau, of West Allis, Wisconsin; sister, Carole Schnelke and husband, Alex, of Brookfield, Wisconsin; and brother, Richard Crotteau and his wife, Pat, of Coal City, Illinois.

She was preceded in death by her father.

LAKE MILLS — Florence H. Tweed, 97, passed away Tuesday, February 16, 1999, at the Lake Mills Care Center, Lake Mills, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Salem Lutheran Church, in Lake Mills, with the Rev. Roger Dykstra and the Rev. Sara Beth Akre officiating.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, in Lake Mills and will continue one hour before the service at the church. Interment will be at Beaver Creek Cemetery, rural Joice, Iowa.

Florence Harriet Tweed was born Feb. 16, 1902, in Winnebago County, Lake Mills, Iowa, to William and Amelia (Hanson) Nelson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith at Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, Joice, Iowa. She attended rural schools in Winnebago County.

On July 13, 1919, she married Otis Tweed at the Andrew Tvedt farm near Joice. She was quite talented in a variety of areas including homemaking, playing the piano and organ, and writing poetry and songs. For the last several years, Florence was an active member of Salem Lutheran Church, Lake Mills.

She is survived by three daughters, Phyllis and her husband, Richard Arneson, of Chippewa Falls, Wis.; Lois and her husband, Orland Reinsmoen, of Joice; Dianne and her husband, James Coburn; three sons, James and his wife, Doris Tweed, of Lake Mills; Herschel and his wife, Jean Tweed, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; Dennis and his wife, Dee Tweed, of Rochester, Minn. She also leaves to mourn one son-in-law, Richard Slattum, of Joice; 18 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Vernon and his wife, Marie Nelson, of San Clemente, Calif.; and one sister, Ruby Brakke, of Lake Mills.

Florence was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Otis, in 1964; a daughter, Janell Slattum; two grandsons, Marshall Arneson and Jeffrey Slattum; one granddaughter, Laura Reinsmoen; a brother, Victor Nelson; and two sisters, Ada Bang and Wilma Ramsey.

She will be sadly missed by her family.

** Pearl Eiffler

OSAGE — Pearl Eiffler, age 90, died Tuesday, February 16, 1999 at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center, in Osage, Iowa.

Pearl Myrtle Eiffler was born on September 24, 1908, at Kendall, Kansas, the daughter of Albert and Harriet (Phillips) Wells. She started school in Kansas and the family moved to Iowa in 1914 on a train, thereby finishing her formal education in Iowa.

On March 15, 1928, she was united in marriage to Richard Nicholson. Later, on July 21, 1950, she married William Eiffler at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Riceville and they had only a few years together, for he died on Feb. 3, 1959.

Pearl was baptized and confirmed at St. Peters Lutheran Church on April 16, 1950. She belonged to the LWML of St. Peters Church and Royal Neighbors of America. She enjoyed making scrapbooks and collecting stuffed animals.

Pearl is survived by her stepchildren, Viola Frahm, of Riceville, Iowa; Melvin Eiffler, of Cresco, Iowa; Herbert and Wilfred Eiffler, both of Reinbeck, Iowa; 13 stepgrandchildren; several stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; one stepdaughter, Myrtle Schwake; one stepgranddaughter; five brothers, George, William (Ray), Earl, Calvin, and John Wells; six sisters: Mary and Anna Wells, Viola McNamara; Sarah Dent, Mabel Volkart; and Nellie Betts.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, February 19, 1999 at the Conway Funeral Home, in Riceville, with burial in Riverside Cemetery, with the Rev. Matthew Verseman officiating. ** Harold 'Uncle Bill' McAuley

FERTILE — Harold Vern "Uncle Bill" McAuley, 86, of 103 First St. S., Fertile, died Feb. 16, 1999, at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East Campus, Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, at the Church of Christ, Fertile, Iowa. The Rev. Dennis Ganz will officiate. Harold (Uncle Bill) as he was better known was born on Sept. 27, 1912, the son of Otto and Lucy (Murray) McAuley in Kent, Iowa. From there the family moved to a farm around Polk City, Iowa and in the Spring of 1918, the family moved to Weyburn, Sask., Canada. They lived there until the fall of 1928, moving back to Iowa around Madrid, on the farm of his Grandma Murray. Harold worked for a farmer and then the coal mines in Fort Dodge. When his father, Otto died, he returned home to farm the family farm; and later doing construction work. Harold never married. In 1980 he came up to Fertile to live with his sister and her husband, Bert and Arlene Lee.

Over the years, Uncle Bill loved to hunt and fish. He also had a great love for children and playing cards. He was especially close to his great niece, Arlene Lee. Uncle Bill was a very special person to all of us and especially so the last 10 years, when he walked with two artificial legs, he lived alone and got out everyday, weather permitting, never complaining.

** Elizabeth Kuhn

OSAGE — Elizabeth Kuhn, age 99, formerly of Osage, died Tuesday, February 16, 1999, at Windsor Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Cedar Falls. She was born on June 26, 1899, in Riceville, Iowa, the daughter of Michael and Rose (Erwin) Sullivan. She moved with her family to Osage as a young child, where she attended school and graduated from Osage High School in 1917. Elizabeth learned to drive an overland car at the age of 14, the first to drive in her family and probably one of the few women in the county to do so. She then attended Iowa State College in Ames. While there, she played in the orchestra and was a member of the Newman Club and the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. She taught at the Pleasant Valley country school and at Washington Elementary school in Osage.

Elizabeth married Sylvester L. Kuhn on June 15, 1921, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Osage. They began married life on the Kuhn family farm, and later farmed in Rock Township, before moving to their own farm northeast of Osage, in Burr Oak Township. In 1972, they moved to a home on Maple Lane, in Osage. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 1981. Sylvester passed away on Nov. 19, 1981.

Elizabeth was a life long member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Over the years she served as president of the Sacred Heart Guild, St. Theresa and Mt. Carmel Circles. She also sang in the church choir and played the organ. She belonged to the American Legion Women's Auxiliary as a Gold Star Mother, and the Mutual Improvement Club of Burr Oak Township. Her interests included playing the piano and organ, sewing, painting and gardening; however, her greatest pleasure came from doing things for her family and others. She spent the last years of her life in the Starr Home in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, February 19, 1999, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Osage, with the Rev. Richard Kuhn, the Rev. Christopher Kuhn, Vicar Msgr. Dean Walz, as Concelebrants; along with other Priests of the Archdiocese. The Rev. Leon Connolly will be the Homilist. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Osage.

** Norman C. Stilwell

MASON CITY — Norman C. Stilwell, 84, of 600 N. Kentucky Ave., died Thursday (Feb. 18, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Episcopal Church, 120 First St. N.E., with the Rev. Robert Towner officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with full Military rites conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Masonic services at 7 p.m. conducted by the Benevolence Lodge #145 A.F. & A.M.

Norman was born July 7, 1914, in Blissfield, Michigan, the son of Clyde and Ivadell Delia (Faxon) Stilwell. His family moved to Mason City in 1917. A graduate of Mason City, he married his high school classmate, Dorothy James, on July 7, 1935. He worked at Pauley Sheet Metal before buying Norm's Cut-Rate Grocery on First St. S.W., in Mason City. He did defense work prior to World War II working in Sparta, Wisconsin, Ipava, Illinois and Kearney, Nebraska.

He entered the Army during the war and was promoted to rank of Tech Sergeant in the 1346th Engineer Combat Battalion. His crews built landing strips and roadways of the Islands of Eniweiok, Okinawa and in occupied Japan.

After the sale of his grocery store, he was the maintenance supervisor at North Iowa Area Community College for 21 years retiring in 1979.

He and his wife of 60 years enjoyed visiting family, friends and traveling. They wintered in Fort Myers Beach, Florida for 11 years during retirement.

He also enjoyed attending city council meetings. Norman was a member of the Elks, I.O.O.F. and V.F.W. He was a 35 year member of the American Legion, Benevolence Masonic Lodge and St. John's Episcopal Church.

Survivors include a son, James C. Stilwell and wife, Laurie, of Des Moines; daughter, Susan J. Joynt and husband, Jim, of Clear Lake; six grandchildren, Todd J. Stilwell and wife, Jill, of Des Moines; Tori J. Shahidi and husband, Robert, of Ames, Iowa; Nickole R. Stilwell and fiance, Edward Modglin, of Des Moines; Michael J. Joynt and wife, Ranae, of Ventura; Marci J. Joynt, of Clear Lake; and Mindy S. Kaiser and husband, Jesse, of Clear Lake; five great-grandchildren, Emily Joynt, Josey and Tyler Kaiser, and Toran and Tavan Shahidi; one brother, Vernon P. Stilwell, of Red Oak, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

** Robert 'Bob' McCready Sherrard

Bob was born July 30, 1916, at Lohrville, Iowa, the son of Robert and Blanche (McCready) Sherrard. The family moved to the Bolan area in 1918 from Lohrville. He was a lifetime member of the Bolan Church, being baptized and confirmed in that church. He graduated from Kensett High School in 1934.

He married Dorothy Opkis in 1941, in Northwood, Iowa, making their home on a farm in the Bolan area until purchasing a farm in the Carpenter, Iowa area.

Bob pursued an auctioneering career, graduating from the Reisch College of Auctioneering in 1957, becoming an instructor there until the school was sold. Bob auctioned for many years, enjoying each sale.

Bob was a lifetime farmer and greatly enjoyed raising and exhibiting registered shorthorn cattle, sheep and quarter horses. He was the 4-H Beef Superintendent at the Worth County Fair for 42 years receiving an award in 1990 for his dedicated service to 4-H youth.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, of St. Ansgar; daughter, Sharon Schaub and her husband, Lynn, of Northwood; son, Robert and his wife, Jane, of Grafton; four grandsons, Eric and Brent Schaub, Rob and Ross Sherrard; brother, Arlie and wife, Avis, of Bolivar, Missouri; brother-in-law, Claude West, of Northwood; two sisters-in-law, Ann Litts, of Tucson, Arizona and Catherine Opkis, of St. Ansgar, Iowa; as well as nieces, nephews and many friends.

CAMBRIA, Wis. — Dorothy Mae Colby, 73, of Cambria, died Sunday, February 14, 1999, at the Lake Mills Care Center, Lake Mills, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 20, 1999 from the First Presbyterian Church in Cambria, with Pastor C. Keith Epps officiating. Burial will follow in the Cambria Cemetery.

Dorothy was born on Nov. 9, 1925 in Centerville, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Ida (Klemmenson) Pavek.

On July 20, 1947, she was married to Maurice Stanford Colby in the "Little Brown Church in the Vale" in Nashua, Iowa.

They farmed for 20 years in the Lake Mills area and in 1967 they purchased the Cambria State Bank in Cambria, Wisconsin. After their retirement in 1986, she and Maurice loved to travel and spent their winters in Texas.

LAKE MILLS — Megan Gabrielle Charlson was born December 7, 1986, in Dallas, Texas, the daughter of David and Deanna Marie (Aasland) Charlson.

Megan was in the 6th grade at Lake Mills Middle School. She was a lover of animals of all kinds. She was a big collector of Beanie Babies. She loved the outdoors, swimming and dressing up. She loved having her picture taken, she loved music and her family and friends meant the world to her.

Megan died Wednesday, February 17, 1999, at her home in rural Northwood, Iowa, at the age of 12 years, 2 months, 10 days.

She is survived by her loving parents, David and Deanna Marie Charlson, of Lake Mills, Iowa; two brothers, Brandon and Kristopher Charlson, of Lake Mills, Iowa; maternal grandparents, Arlene and Wayne Sprecher, of Lake Mills, Iowa; Dennis and Laurel Aasland, of Scarville, Iowa; paternal grandparents, Esther and Willard Charlson, of Warsaw, Mo.; maternal great-grandparents, Carma and Walter Flugum, of Lake Mills, Iowa; Jennie Aasland, of Mason City, Iowa.

Megan was preceded in death by maternal great-grandfathers, Hamlet Moe and Burton Aasland and paternal great-grandparents, Lloyd and Ruth Stickfort and George and Gladys Charlson.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 21, 1999 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 4060 Fourth St. S.W., in Mason City, Iowa. Interment will be at Salem Memorial Cemetery, in Lake Mills, Iowa.

** Norman C. Stilwell

MASON CITY — Norman C. Stilwell, 84, of 600 N. Kentucky Ave., died Thursday (Feb. 18, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today at St. John's Episcopal Church, 120 First St. N.E., with the Rev. Robert Towner officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with full Military rites conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation was held Friday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Masonic services at 7 p.m. conducted by the Benevolence Lodge #145 A.F. & A.M.

Memorials may be given to the St. John's Episcopal Church or Hospice of North Iowa in memory of Norman C. Stilwell.

Norman was born July 7, 1914, in Blissfield, Michigan, the son of Clyde and Ivadell Delia (Faxon) Stilwell. His family moved to Mason City in 1917. A graduate of Mason City, he married his high school classmate, Dorothy James, on July 7, 1935. He worked at Pauley Sheet Metal before buying Norm's Cut-Rate Grocery on First St. S.W., in Mason City. He did defense work prior to World War II working in Sparta, Wisconsin, Ipava, Illinois and Kearney, Nebraska.

He entered the Army during the war and was promoted to rank of Tech Sergeant in the 1346th Engineer Combat Battalion. His crews built landing strips and roadways of the Islands of Eniweiok, Okinawa and in occupied Japan.

After the sale of his grocery store, he was the maintenance supervisor at North Iowa Area Community College for 21 years retiring in 1979.

He and his wife of 60 years enjoyed visiting family, friends and traveling. They wintered in Fort Myers Beach, Florida for 11 years during retirement.

He also enjoyed attending city council meetings. Norman was a member of the Elks, I.O.O.F. and V.F.W. He was a 35 year member of the American Legion, Benevolence Masonic Lodge and St. John's Episcopal Church.

Survivors include a son, James C. Stilwell and wife, Laurie, of Des Moines; daughter, Susan J. Joynt and husband, Jim, of Clear Lake; six grandchildren, Todd J. Stilwell and wife, Jill, of Des Moines; Tori J. Shahidi and husband, Robert, of Ames, Iowa; Nickole R. Stilwell and fiance, Edward Modglin, of Des Moines; Michael J. Joynt and wife, Ranae, of Ventura; Marci J. Joynt, of Clear Lake; and Mindy S. Kaiser and husband, Jesse, of Clear Lake; five great-grandchildren, Emily Joynt, Josey and Tyler Kaiser, and Toran and Tavan Shahidi; one brother, Vernon P. Stilwell, of Red Oak, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and one sister, Ruth (Stilwell) Stevenson.

BRITT — Robert J. Paulson, 87, died Friday (February 19, 1999) at the Westview Care Center, Britt.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Evangelical Free Church, with the Rev. Bill Culbertson officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Britt Veterans Ceremonial Unit. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery, Britt.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Cataldo Funeral Home, Britt and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Robert John Paulson, the son of Paul Merritt and Cora Evalena (Peterson) Paulson, was born June 17, 1911, at Clear Lake. In 1913, he moved with his parents to Dike where he graduated from high school in 1928. He then moved with his parents to Clear Lake and, in 1929, to Garner where he worked for Garner Produce. In 1934, he moved to Austin, Minn. where he worked for Austin Poultry and Egg.

On Feb. 3, 1934, he was married to Hazel Marie Halverson at Austin. They moved to Mason City in 1936, where he worked for Swift and Company.

In 1940, they moved to Britt where he attended an electrical school and a gyro compass school before serving aboard a mine sweeper in the Pacific Theatre. After his discharge, he returned to Britt and worked for the Iowa Light and Power Company for 29 years, retiring in 1976.

For many years, he lovingly cared for his ill wife until her death on October 7, 1993.

On February 1, 1997, he was married to Lettie Petersen at the Evangelical Free Church in Britt. They made their home in Britt. Due to ill health, Bob moved to the Westview Care Center in September of 1998. He was well known and respected in the Britt community.

He was a member of the Evangelical Free Church, V.F.W. and the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Lettie M. Paulson, of Britt; a daughter, Wanda L. Michelson, of Manchester; a stepdaughter, Linda Diel and husband, Herb; a stepson, Robert Lange and wife, Diane; five grandchildren, Robert B. Michelson, of Littleton, Colo.; Scot B. Michelson and wife, Karen, of Fayette; Paul A. Michelson and wife, Lisa, of Cedar Rapids; Corrine L. Ball and husband, Tim, of Britt and Kurt L. Michelson, of Iowa City; stepgrandchildren, Patty and Christy Diel and Julie, Tanya and Kristy Lange; great-grandchildren, Pam Michelson, Craig Michelson, Julie Michelson, Kaylee Michelson, Ellen Michelson, Andrew Ball, Lucas Ball and Ethan Ball; stepgreat-grandchildren, Megan and Haley; a brother, Charles K. Paulson, of Ft. Myers, Florida; a sister-in-law, Wanita Paulson, of Leavenworth, Kan.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Hazel; two sisters, Lucille Pinkerton and Annabelle Paulson; and three brothers, Donald, Wayne and Raymond Paulson.
