** Vernon F. Weinberg

GREENE — Vernon F. Weinberg, 79, died Saturday (Dec. 5, 1998) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Church of Christ, Pleasant Valley, with the Rev. Dennis Eastin officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Clarksville Amvets.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, Greene, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Vernon Weinberg Memorial Fund in care of the family.

Vernon Frederick Weinberg was born June 9, 1919, in rural Butler County.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes of Greene; two daughters, Kathleen Morrissey of Eagle River, Alaska, and Cynthia Vallejo of Arvada, Colo.; one son, Michael Weinberg of Rudd; four grandchildren; two brothers, Bernard Weinberg and Reed Weinberg, both of Plainfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

** Edna M. Olson

MASON CITY — Edna M. Olson, 88, of 1037 19th St. S.W., died Friday (Dec. 4, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Major-Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Kathy Graves, Hospice Chaplain, officiating. Interment will be in the Park Cemetery, Nora Springs.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home, and until service time on Monday.

The family suggests memorials to the Edna M. Olson Memorial Fund.

Edna M. Olson was born Jan. 24, 1910, in rural Charles City, the daughter of Frank E. and Ella (Perrin) Seaver. As a child, Edna moved with her family to Minnesota and then to Nora Springs, where she attended and graduated from Nora Springs High School.

Edna was married to Warren M. Olson on June 19, 1930, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Edna lived in the Plymouth and Rudd areas and helped farm with her husband near Rudd for 42˝ years. Edna also worked for the Nora Springs Bank, at the State House in Des Moines, and she also was a seamstress for several locations.

Edna’s hobbies include crocheting and knitting. She has completed over 100 afghans of which includes one of each child and grandchild to have as a loving memento. She kept her mind sharp through many years of Parkinson’s Disease by doing word puzzles.

Family members cherishing her memory are her children, Jim Olson and his wife, Marilyn, of Webster City, June Klemas and her husband, Roger, of Mason City, Bonnie Scott of Marshalltown, Vern Olson and his wife, Margaret, of Wesley, Sharon Paulus and her husband, Paul, of Clear Lake, Larry Olson and his wife, Donna, of Satellite Beach, Fla., Joann Felton of Mason City, Darlene Norton of Mason City, Dale Olson and his wife, Karen, of Decorah, and Lois Long and her husband, Terry, of Thornton; a special niece, Judy Chamat and her husband, Nabil, and their children, Costa and Natalie; 28 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Mary Seaver of Des Moines, and Gladys Seaver of Cedar Falls; three nieces and one nephew.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Warren in 1970; one son-in-law, Leonard Scott; one grandchild, Cindy Manning; two brothers, Lloyd and Harold Seaver; and one nephew, David Seaver.

FOREST CITY — Joseph Budzialek, 47, died Friday (Dec. 4, 1998) at North Iowa Hospice, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home with the Rev. Craig Steimel of St. James Catholic Church, officiating. Burial will be in St. James Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorials to Hospice of North Iowa.

Joseph Budzialek was born March 9, 1951, in Munich, Germany.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Budzialek of Forest City; one daughter, Heather Hartigan of Forest City; two sons, Andrew and Eric Budzialek, both of Forest City; his mother, Lilly Budzialek of Bear, Del.; two sisters, Helen Cockerill of St. Georges, Del., and Gisela Cummings of Wilmington, Del.; two brothers, Walter Budzialek of Bear, Del., and Edward Budzialek of New Castle, Del.; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, and maternal and paternal grandparents.

** William F. ‘Bill’ Hewitt

MASON CITY — William F. "Bill" Hewitt, 73, of Scottsdale, Ariz., formerly of Mason City, died Friday (Dec. 4, 1998) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Major-Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Ron Stein of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, with a flag folding ceremony provided by the Mason City Memorial Association.

There will be no visitation.

The family suggests memorials to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, Ariz., 85014.

Bill was born June 25, 1925, in Ainsworth, Neb., the son of Elmer and Leslie Farner Hewitt. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1955, Bill founded Hewitt Wholesale, Inc., in Mason City. He was past-president of the Iowa Tobacco Association, past-president and a member of the Mason City Country Club, and McCormick Ranch Country Club of Scottsdale.

Bill is survived by his wife of 53 years, Chic, of Scottsdale; two sons, W. Brent Hewitt and his wife, Carolyn, of Scottsdale, and Guy Hewitt and his wife, Shauna, of Mason City; four grandchildren, Shannon, Trevor, Brandee and Troy; three great-grandchildren, Kolten, Whitnie and Nicolle Noel; two brothers, Vern Hewitt of Denver, and Jimmy Hewitt of Littleton, Colo.; and two half-brothers, Ray Munson of Winner, S.D., and James Munson of Salmouth, Mass.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Leslie Hewitt; and one brother, Floyd.

BRITT — Gilbert H. Guenther, 91, died Friday (Dec. 4, 1998) at the Kanawha Community Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Dodge, the Rev. Karen Dearchs, the Rev. Warren Paige, the Rev. Robert Bell, the Rev. Ronald Johnson, and the Rev. Arlyn Coalter officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Home.

Memorials may be directed to the Britt United Methodist Church Organ Fund.

Gilbert Henry Guenther was born on Jan. 4, 1907, in Page County, near Shambaugh, to George Isaac and Harriet Sarah (Cox) Guenther. He attended country school and graduated from Clarinda High School in 1925.

He attended junior college in Clarinda where he played football. He 1928, he traveled with a threshing crew into North Dakota and Canada. On his return home, he stopped in Ida County, where he found work on a local farm.

On Aug. 14, 1934, he was united in marriage to Sarah Eleanor Coalter at the Silver Creek Methodist Church near Galva. To this union were born five children, Virginia, George, Jeanette, Margaret and Eugene. They made their home and farmed in Ida County until 1946, when the Guenther family moved to a farm in Erin Township near Britt.

Gilbert developed the farm, fed cattle and hogs, and later put his efforts into grain farming. His wife, Eleanor, passed away suddenly in 1961.

He entered into a second marriage with Katherine Ruggles of Mason City. In 1967, Katherine succumbed to cancer.

In the fall of 1968, he was united in marriage to Helen Bell of Charles City. Gilbert continued to farm with his son, Gene, but gradually retired. He and Helen were able to travel to every state in the country. In July of this year, poor health prompted their move into the Kanawha Community Home, where he died on Dec. 4, 1998, at the age of 91.

Gilbert was a 52-year member of the Britt United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday school culminating 62 straight years of teaching. He was chairman of the Building Committee for the present church, and served in many capacities. He was a Farm Bureau Director and President, a Britt Farmer’s Co-op Director and President, one of the founders and past chairman of the Hancock County Cattlemen’s Association, a member of the Hancock County Pork Producers and was active in the Republican Party. He was on the Hancock County Appraisal Board for several years and was a charter member of the Britt Country Club.

He was well known as an avid supporter of Britt High School athletics and other community endeavors.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; two sons, George Guenther and his wife, Janice, of Corwith, and Eugene Guenther and his wife, Julie, of Britt; two daughters, Jeanette Gault and her husband, Jerry, of Spicer, Minn., and Margaret Bell and her husband, Robert, of Washington; a son-in-law, Bernard Theulen and his wife, Helen, of Blakesburg; 23 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; a sister, Ethel Guenther of Hemet, Calif.; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Eleanor and Katherine; a daughter, Virginia Theulen; three sisters; and three brothers.

** Claude R. Simkins

MASON CITY — Claude R. Simkins, 81, of 217 19th St. S.E., died Saturday (Dec. 5, 1998) at the I.O.O.F. Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Major-Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. James B. Norem of St. Paul Lutheran Church, officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home, and until time of services on Tuesday.

The family suggests memorials to the Claude R. Simkins Memorial Fund.

Claude R. Simkins was born Oct. 12, 1917, the son of George Henderson and Grace Doretta (Lehman) Simkins in Mason City. Claude attended and graduated from Mason City High School in 1937. Claude worked with his father on the milk route for Hermanson Diary and then Carnation Dairy for 35 years. After his retirement he worked for 10 years doing maintenance for Younkers. Claude was married to Margaret Neumann on June 17, 1951, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

He was a member of the Christian Science Church.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Simkins of Mason City; four daughters, Barbara Pals and her husband, Douglas, of Mason City, Claudia Schultz and her husband, Ted, of Mason City, Cheryl Spencer and her husband, Gary, of Rockwell, and Pam Cheville and her husband, Steven, of Rockford; nine grandchildren, Seth and Jeremy Schultz, Joshua, Jesse, Joel and Jonah Pals, Kayla and Erin Spence, and Ethan Cheville; one great-granddaughter, Alexis Schultz; two sisters, Dorothy Searl of Las Vegas, Nev., and Mildred White of Mason City; and one brother, George Simkins Jr. and his wife, Pearl, of Clear Lake.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

MASON CITY — Richard E. "Dick" Dow, 80, of Loveland, Colo., and formerly of Mason City, died Saturday (Dec. 5, 1998) at the McKee Medical Center in Loveland.

ST. ANSGAR — Dorothy June Navratil, 49, died Saturday (Dec. 5, 1998) at Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage, ending her courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Grafton, with the Rev. Rose Marie Nack officiating. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, St. Ansgar.

Family will receive friends from 5:30 to 8 p.m. today at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar.

Dorothy was born on April 3, 1949, in Osage, the daughter of Kenneth and Leona (Erdman) Horgen. She grew up in rural St. Ansgar, where she graduated from St. Ansgar Community High School.

She attended the Rochester School of Practical Nursing, Rochester, Minn., and earned her degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

Dorothy was baptized a child of God, and confirmed her faith at Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, where she married Jerry Dean Navratil on March 22, 1969.

They farmed near Grafton for many years and raised their three children. She joined the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton and maintained her membership there, even after moving to St. Ansgar several years ago.

Dorothy was a longtime employee of Hormel Food Inc., Austin, Minn., where she continued to work as long as she was able.

The companionship of her children, family and many friends was a source of great joy for Dorothy. Having grown up and lived most of her life on a farm, she loved being outdoors and found peace working the soil of her flower and vegetable gardens. She also enjoyed quilting and sewing, fashioning many hand-made gifts for her loved ones. Her strength and spirit will be sadly missed.

Dorothy is survived by her sons, Jon Navratil of Northwood, and Jeremy Navratil of St. Ansgar; her daughter, Jennifer Navratil of Iowa City; her mother, Leona Horgen of St. Ansgar; three sisters, Karen Jaspers and her husband, Keith, of Springfield, Mo., Janice Vervaecke and her husband, Edward, of St. Ansgar, Sheryln Horgen of St. Ansgar; three brothers, Russell Horgen and special friend, Janice Ask, of Grafton, Darwin Horgen and special friend, Julie Weide, of Grafton, and Keith Horgen and his wife, Jan, of St. Ansgar; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth; a sister, Norma; and her maternal and paternal grandparents.

HAMPTON — Folmer M. Jorgensen, 89, died Saturday (Dec. 5, 1998) at the Hampton Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Louise Stromberg officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery.

Folmer M. Jorgensen was born Jan. 9, 1909, in Hampton.

Survivors include a son, Lloyd Jorgensen of Mesa, Ariz.; two daughters, Jane Vandre of Hilliard, Ohio, and Kaye Peters of Hampton; a brother, Frode Jorgensen of San Mateo, Calif.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one brother and two sisters.

** Vernon F. Weinberg

GREENE — Funeral services for Vernon F. Weinberg, 79, of 24845 110th St., will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Church of Christ, Pleasant Valley, rural Clarksville, with the Rev. Dennis Eastin officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Clarksville Amvets.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel, and will continue on Tuesday at the church one hour before services.

Vernon Frederick Weinberg was born June 9, 1919, in rural Butler County, a son of George and Hilda (Wedeking) Weinberg, and died Saturday (Dec. 5, 1998) at his home in rural Greene.

He received his education in the rural Butler County Schools and graduated from the Plainfield High School. As a young man he moved to California where he worked for an airplane factory in San Diego. He later returned to Iowa and was inducted into the United States Army on Jan. 22, 1943. He served with the 446th Bomb Group 705th Squadron in the battles of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Air Offensive Europe. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 7, 1945.

Vernon became employed by John Deere Tractor Works in Waterloo and later started farming near Clarksville. He was united in marriage to Agnes Victoria Murray at St. John's Church in Waterloo. They began farming four miles north of Clarksville where they remained until 1956, when they moved onto their present farm east of Greene.

Following Vernon's retirement in 1987, he enjoyed doing woodcarving and woodworking projects, fishing and going on bus trips.

He was baptized on July 20, 1919, and confirmed a member of the First United Church of Christ, Pleasant Valley, on Aug. 26, 1934. He was a member of the Clarksville Amvets.

Living family members include his loving wife, Agnes, of Greene; two daughters, Kathleen and her husband, Stephen Morrissey, of Eagle River, Alaska, and Cynthia Vallejo of Arvada, Colo.; one son, Michael Weinberg of Rudd; four grandchildren, Lisa, Jennifer, Michael and Rebecca; two brothers, Bernard Weinberg, and Reed and his wife, Wanda Weinberg, all of Plainfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

ROCKFORD — Beulah Evelyn White, 81, died Saturday (Dec. 5, 1998) at her home.

Beulah Evelyn White was born Aug. 31, 1917, in Rockford.

Claude R. Simkins was born Oct. 12, 1917, the son of George Henderson and Grace Doretta (Lehman) Simkins in Mason City. Claude attended and graduated from Mason City High School in 1937. Claude worked with his father on the milk route for Hermanson Diary and then Carnation Dairy for 35 years. After his retirement he worked for 10 years doing maintenance for Younkers. Claude was married to Margaret Neumann on June 17, 1951, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

He was a member of the Christian Science Church.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Simkins of Mason City; four daughters, Barbara Pals and her husband, Douglas, of Mason City, Claudia Schultz and her husband, Ted, of Mason City, Cheryl Spencer and her husband, Gary, of Rockwell, and Pam Cheville and her husband, Steven, of Rockford; nine grandchildren, Seth and Jeremy Schultz, Joshua, Jesse, Joel and Jonah Pals, Kayla and Erin Spence, and Ethan Cheville; one great-granddaughter, Alexis Schultz; two sisters, Dorothy Searl of Las Vegas, Nev., and Mildred White of Mason City; and one brother, George Simkins Jr. and his wife, Pearl, of Clear Lake.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

ST. ANSGAR — Dorothy June Navratil, 49, died Saturday (Dec. 5, 1998) at Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage, ending her courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Grafton, with the Rev. Rose Marie Nack officiating. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, St. Ansgar.

Family will receive friends from 5:30 to 8 p.m. today at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar.

Dorothy was born on April 3, 1949, in Osage, the daughter of Kenneth and Leona (Erdman) Horgen. She grew up in rural St. Ansgar, where she graduated from St. Ansgar Community High School.

She attended the Rochester School of Practical Nursing, Rochester, Minn., and earned her degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

Dorothy was baptized a child of God, and confirmed her faith at Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, where she married Jerry Dean Navratil on March 22, 1969.

They farmed near Grafton for many years and raised their three children. She joined the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton and maintained her membership there, even after moving to St. Ansgar several years ago.

Dorothy was a longtime employee of Hormel Food Inc., Austin, Minn., where she continued to work as long as she was able.

The companionship of her children, family and many friends was a source of great joy for Dorothy. Having grown up and lived most of her life on a farm, she loved being outdoors and found peace working the soil of her flower and vegetable gardens. She also enjoyed quilting and sewing, fashioning many hand-made gifts for her loved ones. Her strength and spirit will be sadly missed.

Dorothy is survived by her sons, Jon Navratil of Northwood, and Jeremy Navratil of St. Ansgar; her daughter, Jennifer Navratil of Iowa City; her mother, Leona Horgen of St. Ansgar; three sisters, Karen Jaspers and her husband, Keith, of Springfield, Mo., Janice Vervaecke and her husband, Edward, of St. Ansgar, Sheryln Horgen of St. Ansgar; three brothers, Russell Horgen and special friend, Janice Ask, of Grafton, Darwin Horgen and special friend, Julie Weide, of Grafton, and Keith Horgen and his wife, Jan, of St. Ansgar; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth; a sister, Norma; and her maternal and paternal grandparents.

Folmer M. Jorgensen was born Jan. 9, 1909, in Hampton.

** Vernon F. Weinberg

GREENE — Funeral services for Vernon F. Weinberg, 79, of 24845 110th St., will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Church of Christ, Pleasant Valley, rural Clarksville, with the Rev. Dennis Eastin officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Clarksville Amvets.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel, and will continue on Tuesday at the church one hour before services.

Vernon Frederick Weinberg was born June 9, 1919, in rural Butler County, a son of George and Hilda (Wedeking) Weinberg, and died Saturday (Dec. 5, 1998) at his home in rural Greene.

He received his education in the rural Butler County Schools and graduated from the Plainfield High School. As a young man he moved to California where he worked for an airplane factory in San Diego. He later returned to Iowa and was inducted into the United States Army on Jan. 22, 1943. He served with the 446th Bomb Group 705th Squadron in the battles of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Air Offensive Europe. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 7, 1945.

Vernon became employed by John Deere Tractor Works in Waterloo and later started farming near Clarksville. He was united in marriage to Agnes Victoria Murray at St. John's Church in Waterloo. They began farming four miles north of Clarksville where they remained until 1956, when they moved onto their present farm east of Greene.

Following Vernon's retirement in 1987, he enjoyed doing woodcarving and woodworking projects, fishing and going on bus trips.

He was baptized on July 20, 1919, and confirmed a member of the First United Church of Christ, Pleasant Valley, on Aug. 26, 1934. He was a member of the Clarksville Amvets.

Living family members include his loving wife, Agnes, of Greene; two daughters, Kathleen and her husband, Stephen Morrissey, of Eagle River, Alaska, and Cynthia Vallejo of Arvada, Colo.; one son, Michael Weinberg of Rudd; four grandchildren, Lisa, Jennifer, Michael and Rebecca; two brothers, Bernard Weinberg, and Reed and his wife, Wanda Weinberg, all of Plainfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Bill was born June 25, 1925, in Ainsworth, Neb., the son of Elmer and Leslie Farner Hewett. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1955, Bill founded Hewett Wholesale Inc., here in Mason City. He was past-president of the Iowa Tobacco Association, past-president and a member of the Mason City Country Club, and McCormick Ranch Country Club of Scottsdale.

Bill is survived by his wife of 53 years, Chic, of Scottsdale; two sons, W. Brent Hewett and his wife, Carolyn, of Scottsdale, and Guy Hewett and his wife, Shauna, of Mason City; four grandchildren, Shannon, Trevor, Brandee and Troy; three great-grandchildren, Kolten, Whitnie and Nicolle Noel; two brothers, Vern Hewett of Denver, Colo., and Jimmy Hewett of Littleton, Colo.; and two half-brothers, Ray Munson of Winner, S.D., and James Munson of Salmouth, Mass.

Brad Arlen Wismer was born June 24, 1952, in Mason City, son of Charles and Dorothy (Olson) Wismer. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1971. After high school, he enjoyed traveling through Europe.

Brad attended the University of Northern Iowa and then worked at Hampton Tool & Dye and Andrews Concrete. He had a U.S. Patent on a Lottery Selection Wheel.

Brad loved drawing, painting, and collecting old books and especially loved spending time in East Park. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Survivors include his children, Scott and Amy Wismer, both of Waterloo; his mother, Dorothy Wismer, of Mason City; his father, Charles Wismer, of Fort Madison; one brother, Charles Wismer, of England; three sisters, Kay Stone, Brandon, Fla.; Christie Carlsen, of Manly; and Sheila Austin, Mason City; four nieces; four nephews; and one great-niece.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents. He was especially close to his grandmother, Viv.

On Dec. 31, 1940, he married Ana Mae Sheridan in Emmetsburg.

Marvin was a farmer for 10 years and then he worked at Decker’s Plant for 24˝ years.

Marvin loved camping and dancing. He also loved his garden, where he grew roses and gladiolas.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City.

Mabel G. Sondergaard was born April 21, 1903, at Green Leaf, Kan., the daughter of the Rev. John M. and Luella (Middleton) Life. She attended elementary and high school at Erie, Pa. She also attended the Cincinnati Training School of Social Work and graduated in 1925.

She was employed by the American Red Cross from 1925 to 1943 and was the executive director of the Cerro Gordo County Chapter of the American Red Cross from 1935 to 1943. Mabel was a longtime resident of Mason City and involved with many social clubs including the Monday Study Club and Chapter XX of the PEO. She was a very active member of the First United Methodist Church, Mason City. She was involved in the KB Circle and Bible classes.

In 1928, she was united in marriage to Gillette Quintard in Tama. After his death, she was married to Harry Sondergaard on July 5, 1941, at Spencer.

Those left to cherish her memory are one son, John Sondergaard and his wife, Sheila, of Baton Rouge, La.; one daughter, Karen Miles and her husband, Harlan, of Cold Camp, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Gregory S. Miles, of Cold Camp, Mo.; Scott Miles, of Houston; Pamela Dailey, of Olathe, Kan.; Rebecca Rozet, of San Francisco; Tracy Wacker, of Jacksonville, Fla.; Mike Sondergaard, of Houston; and Ericka Sondergaard, of Baton Rouge, La.; nine great-grandchildren, Christina Dailey, Rebecca Dailey, Jessica Miles, James Miles, Colbie Wacker, Jessica Wacker, Reese Wacker, Alex Sondergaard, and Jake Sondergaard; one great-great-grandchild, Alexandria; and nieces and nephews.

Harry H. Horstman was born Jan. 21, 1913, in Britt, son of Herman August and Ada Bell (O’Brian) Horstman.

Harry attended school in Britt and worked on a farm for many years near Britt. He came to Mason City in 1962 and worked at the Sugar Beet Factory.

He also was a maintenance man for many places including Morrell Jewelers, Mason City County Club, Mason City Parks Department and the Corner Tap.

He is survived by one sister, Elva June Horstman, of Mason City; and will be sadly missed by his good friend, Virginia Reublin, of Mason City; and all of his other many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; two sisters; two nieces and two nephews.

** Shirley Jean Bernemann

OTTUMWA — Shirley Jean Gerard Bernemann, 74, of 1308 N. Van Buren, Ottumwa, died at 6:50 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 5, 1998) at her home.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary of the Visitation Church, with the Rev. Robert Striegel officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Alex and Zachary Barr, Matthew, Adam and Ryan Bernemann and Bill Barr.

Visitation will begin after 10 a.m. today at the Reece Funeral Home, 607 E. Second St., Ottumwa, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m. with an 8 p.m. Christian wake service.

A Memorial has been established to Hospice Inc., 312 E. Alta Vista, Ottumwa, Crest Home, or St. Mary of the Visitation Church.

She was born May 5, 1924, in Mason City, to Alfred and Veronica O’Donnell Gerard. She married Edward Bernemann on Aug. 7, 1948. He preceded her in death on Feb. 16, 1998.

A graduate of Holy Family High School in Mason City, she worked for Alcoa Aluminum in Minneapolis for a short period of time as well as being a housewife. She also worked for the Union Bus Station in Ottumwa as a ticket agent.

She was a member of St. Mary of the Visitation Church and the Altar and Rosary Society.

Surviving are two daughters, Judy Barr, of Ottumwa; and Jeanne Bernemann, of Ottumwa; four sons, Thomas Bernemann, of Council Bluffs; Steve Bernemann, of Grinnell; Kevin Bernemann, of Ottumwa and Tim Bernemann, of West Branch; nine grandchildren; mother, Veronica Gerard, of Mason City; sister, Mary McMullin, of Mason City; and two brothers, John Gerard, of Two Rivers, Wis., and Pat Gerard, of San Diego.

She was preceded in death by her father, and her husband.

** Harold Tabbert

ST. ANSGAR — Harold Tabbert, 93, died Sunday ( Dec. 6, 1998) at the Good Samaritan Center, St. Ansgar.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Robert Porisch officiating. Burial will be in First Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be after 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Shroeder and Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar, is in charge of arrangements.

Harold Reinold Tabbert was born Aug. 27, 1905, in Rock Township, Mitchell County to Henry Tabbert and Elsa Koehler Tabbert. He was baptized in St. John’s Lutheran Church, Rock Township, and confirmed in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grafton.

He married Grace Kroneman on May 8, 1937. Two children were born to them: Russell and Loretta.

Harold Tabbert worked in elevators in Grafton, Plymouth and Rockford. In 1950, he moved to a farm near Otranto, where he resided until moving to St. Ansgar in 1987.

FAIRFIELD, Calif. — Clyde Buffington, 76, died suddenly Wednesday (Nov. 18, 1998) at his home in Fairfield.

Funeral services were held Wed., Nov. 25, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Fairfield, Calif.

Clyde Buffington was born on Aug. 7, 1922, in Mason City to Chit and Nettie (Chamberlin) Buffington. He attended Mason City schools, but joined the U. S. Navy before graduation.

He served in World War II, stationed aboard the U.S.S. New Mexico as a gunners mate. He was awarded the Purple Heart. He also served in the Korean War.

He was a journeyman carpenter, belonging to Local 1313 in Mason City and later to Local 180 in Vallyo, Calif. He was a member of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Fairfield Lodge No. 1976, for 34 years, serving as exalted ruler from 1969-70. He also belonged to Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Devita (McCaulley) of 1843 Virginia, Fairfield, Calif.; three sons, Steve, Mike and Mark; three daughters, Coleen Parks, Maureen Padilla and Diane Kraak, all of California; 13 grandshildren and two great-grandchildren; a brother, Stanley, of Martinez, Calif.; and two sisters, Myrna Mondt, of Dent, Minn., and Kathryn Lindsay, of Clear Lake.

Clyde was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and three sisters.

Clarence Percey Oswald was born on Sept. 9, 1914, in Plaza, N.D., the son of Martin and Louise (Morotz) Oswald. He attended and received his education in the Hanlontown School System, graduating from Hanlontown High School.

He was united in marriage to Helen Lydia Strombom on Jan. 22, 1939, in Hanlontown. She preceded him in death on Aug. 16, 1987. After their marriage, they farmed in the Hanlontown area for several years until his retirement from farming. He also worked for the Hanlontown Elevator.

He enjoyed fishing, flowers, gardening, and helping people.

He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Hanlontown and held several offices within the church and was also on the Brush Point Cemetery Board.

James Everett Sweeney was born on May 4, 1968, at Osage Memorial Hospital in Osage, the son of Patrick and Judy (Keeton) Sweeney. He attended school in Riceville, graduating from the Riceville High School in 1986. He then attended two years at Iowa Lakes Community College and one year at Winona State University, Winona, Minn. He lived in the Riceville and LeRoy, Minn., communities.

On Oct. 4, 1997, he was united in marriage to Jessica Purkapile at the Immaculate Conception Church in Riceville.

Jim worked for Midstates Retreading-Bandag in Rochester, Minn., and DJ of "Shock Wave." He was a member of the Jaycees. Jim liked hunting and fishing, football, snowmobiling and music. He would do anything for anyone. He loved his wife and all his family.

He is survived by his wife, Jessica; his mother, Judy Portis and her husband, Kenneth, of Riceville; his paternal grandmother, Viola Sweeney, of McIntire; his maternal grandmother, Pat Keeton, of Russell; one sister, Tara Krukow and her husband, Jamie, of Riceville; a nephew, Joshua Krukow; his in-laws, Ron and Mary Purkapile, of LeRoy, Minn.; his grandmother-in-law, Irene Purkapile, of LeRoy, Minn.; two brothers-in-law, Clint and Lucas Purkapile; and a sister-in-law, Michelle Campbell.

Eleanor was born Aug. 3, 1908, in Ledyard, the daughter of Henry and Ruby Braun. She married Helmer Helmers in 1928 in Algona.

She loved being with her family and also enjoyed sewing and gardening.

Eleanor had lived with her daughter (Marjorie Djuren) 777 South Eisenhower, until the last seven months.

She is survived by her two daughters, Majorie Djuren, Mason City; Marilou Thompson and her husband, Gordon, Omaha, Neb.; four grandchildren, John Djuren and his wife, Kathy, Denver, Iowa; Ann Denholm and her husband, Robert, Fort Calhoun, Neb.; Cherie Maxson and her husband, William, Phoenix, Ariz.; and Susan Thompson-McHugh and her husband, Max, Phoenix, Ariz.; a great-granddaughter, Sonja Denholm, Fort Calhoun, Neb.; two sisters, Agnes Braun, Milford, and Wilma Anderson and her husband, Charles, Waterford, Mich.; one brother, Raymond Braun and his wife, Mittee, Deadwood, Ore.; and many nieces and nephews.

Marvin O. Weydert was born Oct. 4, 1917, at Algona, the son of Peter and Justine B. (Weber) Weydert. He graduated from high school at Whittemore in the Class of 1936.

On Dec. 31, 1940, he married Anna Mae Sheridan in Emmetsburg.

Marvin was a farmer for 10 years and then he worked at Decker's Plant for 24˝ years.

Marvin loved camping and dancing. He also loved his garden, where he grew roses and gladiolas.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City.

MASON CITY — Darrell O. Robertson, 69, died Wednesday (Dec. 9, 1998) Good Shepherd Health Center.

His body was cremated. There will be no visitation. Inurnment will take place in the Columbarium at Memorial Park Cemetery. Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., is in charge of arrangements.

Darrell O. Robertson was born Nov. 25, 1925, in Mason City, the son of Isaac and Rose (Christianson) Robertson. Darrell served in the Army during World War II. He loved to travel.

Survivors include nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Mavis Madole of Mason City.

TITONKA — Emily Roberts, 81, formerly of Madison, S.D., died Wednesday (Dec. 8, 1998) at the Titonka Care Center.

DUBUQUE — David W. Eliason, 56, of 2201 St. Celia St., died Monday (Dec. 7, 1998) at the Mercy Health Center, St. Joseph Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Lord of Life Lutheran Church, Dubuque. Interment services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Tenold Funeral Home, Belmond, with military graveside rites to follow at the Belmond Cemetery by the Belmond American Legion.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St., Dubuque, and after 9:30 a.m. Friday until time of services at the church. Visitation will also be held after 10 a.m. Saturday at the Tenold Funeral Home in Belmond.

The family suggests memorials to the Colts Drum and Bugle Corp or the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra.

David W. Eliason was born Nov. 14, 1942, in Belmond, to Harold and Berneice (Lein) Eliason. He graduated from Kanawha High School, and received his bachelor degree from Iowa State University in Ames.

He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corp. from 1966 to 1969. He began his radio career at KMRI at Iowa State University in Ames while a student. He also worked at KASI, Ames, and KWBG, Boone, and at WOI-TV station in Ames.

Upon returning from military service he worked in Mason City for KSMN Radio. He came to Dubuque to work at KDTH radio in the early 1970s as a newscaster. He later established Mobile Music Machines Company and Depa Sound Systems. He was currently the assignment editor for KDFX, channel 40, in Dubuque. He was a member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church, the National Association of Audio Engineers, and American Legion Post No. 6, Dubuque.

Survivors include a sister, Arlene Eliason of Minot, N.D., and many cousins.

** Lewis E. Koepke

FOREST CITY — Lewis E. Koepke, 59, died Wednesday (Dec. 9, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A memorial service is tentatively scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City. Lewis’ remains will be taken to his mountain in Arkansas the first week of July, 1999.

George was born Oct. 23, 1902, in Sugar Grove, Ill., the son of Calvin and Cora Miller. In 1915, his family moved to Iowa to farm south of Mason City. He attended Mason City schools until the 11th grade, at which time he was needed to work on the family farm. In 1919, they moved to Thornton where he worked in an auto garage. In 1921, he bought a truck line in Sheffield.

He married Berniece Peter on May 24, 1924, and in 1926, moved to Mason City where he continued his trucking business until 1928, after which he started a radio shop and also worked for Vance Music Co.

In 1938, George and Herb Kuhlmeier formed Herb & George Radio. In 1940, George bought out his partner Herb and continued this business until 1968, when his son Daryl took over.

George is survived by two sons, Daryl and his wife, Shirley, of Mason City, and Gary and his wife, Dara, of Des Moines; seven grandchildren, Dennis Miller of Anaheim, Calif., Michael Miller of St. Petersburg, Fla., Kenneth Miller and his wife, Stephenie, of Houston, Jay Miller and his wife, Mary, of Mason City, Dean Miller of Des Moines, Lynne Miller of Sac City, and Gina Miller of Minneapolis; five great-grandchildren, Casey, Marie, Ashley, Alex and Paige.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and two sisters.

** Melville William 'Bud' Hughes

CLEAR LAKE — Melville William "Bud" Hughes, 84, a lifetime resident of Clear Lake, died of natural causes Wednesday (Dec. 9, 1998).

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the First Congregational Church, 205 W. 10th Ave. North, with the Rev. Thomas Healey officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Bud was born in Clear Lake on April 7, 1914, son of Melvin P. and Celia "Clack" Hughes, and dedicated his life to family and service to the community and church. Bud's grandparents settled in Clear Lake in the mid-1800's.

Bud was active in the Boy Scouts. He earned Eagle Scout in 1930; the Silver Beaver Scouter's Key, and the Explorer Silver Award in 1958; and the Order of the Arrow Vigil Honor in 1961. Bud served as first scoutmaster for Troop 199 at Opportunity Village in 1981. His oldest scout was 70.

Bud attended the First Congregational Church founded by his great-grandfather, Elder Wood, was a member of the boards of trustees and deacons for many years. He gave the keynote address at the third annual meeting of the National Association of Congregational-Christian Churches in Hartford, Conn.

Bud was an active business man and supporter of Clear Lake his entire life.

He served on the School Board from 1947 to 1953, was honored as Clear Lake's Man of the Year in 1951 for serving as general chairman of the Clear Lake Centennial, and was a long-time member of the Clear Lake Noon Lion's Club, where he received the Melvin Jones Award, the highest award given in the Lion's organization.

In 1984, Bud was honored with the Iowa Governor's Volunteer Award.

Bud married Lois Padelford in 1939.

Survivors include four sons, Melville P. "Duke" Hughes and his wife, RoseMarie, of Novato, Calif., Justin R. Hughes and his wife, Joyce, of Fredricksburg, Va., Alan D. Hughes and his wife, Salimah Majeed, of Minneapolis, and Craig B. Hughes and his wife, Barbara, of San Diego; one brother, Dick Hughes and his wife, Joan, of Clear Lake; four sisters, Mary Ann Hughes of Clear Lake, Elizabeth Morrissey of Edina, Minn., Margaret Doudna of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Katherine Short of Clear Lake; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and countless children of all ages touched by his tireless devotion to service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Lois in 1989.

Bud has made the world kinder through example and compassion.

Paul was born Nov. 10, 1924, in Titonka, the son of Henry Albert and Clara Mary (Sherman) Bruns. He attended grade school and began high school in Titonka. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1943. While at Mason City High, he received many awards in football, basketball and baseball. He played on the undefeated football and basketball teams in 1943. After his graduation he served his country overseas with the 105th Artillery Unit during World War II.

Following the service, he graduated from Wartburg College, Waverly, with a bachelor of science degree in physical education and social studies. He married Arleen M. Garrison on July 28, 1945, in Mason City. To this union their three children were born.

From 1950-1953, he taught social studies and physical education programs as well as coaching boys and girls basketball. Then in 1953, he moved to Carroll, where he was the high school history teacher, plus head basketball coach, golf coach and also assistant football coach.

Paul moved to Clear Lake in 1967, where he owned and operated J & N Trailer Sales until 1974, when he opened the Jack of Diamonds Restaurant in Clear Lake until 1977. In 1978, he returned to coaching at Charles City until 1980.

Paul married Geneva H. Daugard on May 13, 1978, in Las Vegas. They later worked together in the Los Angeles and the San Diego area until they moved back to Humboldt. After his wife's death in 1996, he moved to Clear Lake to be closer to his family.

Throughout Paul's life he was highly regarded as a fierce competitor and an outstanding coach. He had a keen interest in basketball and had a zealous attraction to golf. He always had a loving fondness for his family.

He was a member of Clear Lake United Methodist Church, and the Clear Lake V.F.W.

Paul is survived by his son, Paul G. Bruns of Clear Lake; one daughter, Tamara A. Bruns of Longbeach, Calif.; two grandchildren, Paul Robert Bruns of North Sioux City, S.D., and Robyn R. Davidson and her husband, David, of Clear Lake; one brother, Dennis Lawrence Bruns and his wife, Diane, of Lake Forest, Ill.; and one sister, Shirley Reeff and her husband, Nick, of Everett, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Geneva; one son, David Allen Bruns; one brother, Lee V. Bruns; and two sisters, Joanne G. Bruns and Mary Uhl.

** Tyrus O. Klinger

GOLDFIELD — Tyrus O. Klinger, 80, died Tuesday (Dec. 8, 1998) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Ellen G. Brantley officiating. Burial will be in the Glenwood Cemetery.

Visitation with the family present will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Willim Funeral Home, Eagle Grove.

Tyrus O. Klinger was born July 25, 1918, in Burnside.

Survivors include three daughters, Kathryn Dorr of Iowa Falls, Loralee Torkelson of Waterloo, and Linda Bellmore of Tecumseh, Mich.; one grandson; and two sisters, Frances Evans of Eagle Grove, and Majel Boring of Novinger, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and one sister.

** Verna M. Meyer

BRITT — Verna M. Meyer, 72, died Tuesday (Dec. 8, 1998) at the Methodist Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Corwith, with the Rev. Caroline Engelbrecht officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Britt.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Ewing Funeral Chapel, Britt, and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

Verna M. Meyer was born Oct. 30, 1926, in Wessington Springs, S.D.

Survivors include her husband, Frank Meyer of Britt; four daughters, Cindy VanDusseldorp of Britt, Melinda Wickert of Granada, Minn., Dawn Gray of Ames, and Sandy Smidt of Kanawha; one son, Dave Meyer of Britt; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, and one brother.

** Eleanor W. Helmers

MASON CITY — Eleanor W. Helmers, 90, died Monday (Dec. 7, 1998) at the Sunrise Health Care and Rehabilitation Center.

Eleanor donated her body to the University of Iowa and arrangements for a memorial service is pending at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E.

Eleanor was born Aug. 3, 1908, in Ledyard, the daughter of Henry and Ruby Braun. She married Helmer Helmers in 1928 in Algona.

She loved being with her family and also enjoyed sewing and gardening.

Eleanor had lived with her daughter (Marjorie Djuren) 777 S. Eisenhower, until the last seven months.

She is survived by her two daughters, Marjorie Djuren, Mason City, and Marilou Thompson and her husband, Gordon, Omaha, Neb.; four grandchildren, John Djuren and his wife, Kathy, Denver, Iowa, Ann Denholm and her husband, Robert, Fort Calhoun, Neb., Cherie Maxson and her husband, William, Phoenix, and Susan Thompson-McHugh and her husband, Max, Phoenix; a great-granddaughter, Sonja Denholm, Fort Calhoun, Neb.; two sisters, Agnes Braun, Milford, and Wilma Anderson and her husband, Charles, Waterford, Mich.; one brother, Raymond Braun and his wife, Mittee, Deadwood, Ore.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and three sisters.
