** Mureen Roath
MASON CITY — Mureen Roath, 73, of 1215 Sixth St. S.E., died Tuesday (Dec. 22, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the First Covenant Church, Highway 18 East at Ohio Avenue, with the Rev. Rich Murray officiating. Interment will be in the Bethel Lutheran Brethren Cemetery, Joice.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.
Memorials may be given to the Mureen Roath Memorial Fund.
Mureen was born April 20, 1920 in rural Emmons, Minn., the daughter of Henry and Luella (Brua) Rogness.
Mureen married Dewane Roath on Nov. 19, 1944 at the Bethel Lutheran Brethren Church, in Joice.
Mureen was a cook in the Mason City Public School system for 21 years.
She attended First Covenant Church. She enjoyed crocheting and music.
Mureen is survived by two daughters, Marlys Aus and her husband, Duane, of Detroit Lakes, Minn., and Connie Wilcox and her husband, Robert, of Mason City; son, Verlyn Roath, of Mason City; five grandchildren, Donald Aus, of Moorhead, Minn., Lonnie Hansen and his wife, Vonnie, of Detroit Lakes, Lori Mueller and her husband, Rolie, of Detroit Lakes, Robbie Wilcox, of Mason City, Christine Posekany and her husband, Greg, of Mason City; five great-grandchildren, Sara and Jessica Hansen, Ariel, Bethani and Taylor Mueller; six brothers, LaVern Rogness and his wife, Eileen, of Fergus Falls, Minn.; Richard Rogness and his wife, Agnes, of Fergus Falls; Rollin Rogness and his wife, Mary Lou, of Minot, N.D.; Glenn Rogness and his wife, Vonnie, of Fergus Falls; Burdean Rogness and his wife, Kay, of Edina, Minn.; and Kennis Rogness and his wife, Dixie, of Des Moines; two brothers-in-law, Gary Roath and his wife, Alice, of Mason City; and Boyd Roath and his wife, Grace, of Mason City; one sister-in-law, Iris DeWall, of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.
Mureen is preceded in death by her parents, husband and one infant brother.

MASON CITY — Ralph Cox, 84, formerly of 300 Parkridge Dr., died Friday (Dec. 25, 1998) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City.

CHARLES CITY — Josephine (Mrs. Bill) Allen, 87, of 303 Blunt St., died Thursday (Dec. 24, 1998) at the Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City.
Memorial services will be held at a later date. Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., Charles City, is in charge of arrangements.
Josephine Eugenie Cutler Allen was born March 12, 1911, at Osage.
Survivors include her husband, Bill, of Charles City; two daughters, Jill Cunion, of Indianapolis, and Merideth Clelberg, of White Bear Lake, Minn.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Beth Walker, of Emily, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa, Charles City.
** Komer A. Johnson
JOICE — Komer A. Johnson Sr., 81, of Nevada, died of cancer Thursday (Dec. 24, 1998) at Story County Long Term Care where he had been a resident for the past 12 days.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 28, 1998 at the Bethany Lutheran Church, Joice, with Pastor Gary Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Concordia Cemetery in rural Joice.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 27, at the Chet Ryan Mortuary, in Nevada, with the family present and a 4 p.m. prayer service officiated by Pastor Tom Poppe.
A memorial fund has been established.
Komer was born on Jan. 6, 1917, in Outlook, Saskatchewan, Canada to Oscar and Mae (Dahlby) Johnson. He attended Waldorf College.
Komer married Marian Edgington on April 23, 1939, in Mason City. He was a farmer and operated a small-engine repair service.
Komer was a member of the Moose Lodge in Marshalltown and Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice.
He had been a resident of Nevada for the past 16 years, living in LeGrand and the Joice area prior.
Komer was interested in antique tractors, cars and half scale John Deere tractors.
Komer is survived by a son, Komer Johnson Jr., of Nevada; three daughters, Kay Whitman, of Cedar Rapids; Sharyl Jorth, of Webster City and Terry Seedorf, of Lake Mills; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; five brothers, Alvin Tweeten, of Forest City, James Tweeten, of Lake Mills, Stanley Tweeten, of Manly, Luther Tweeten, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Maynard Tweeten, of Lake Mills; two sisters, Olive Gilbertson, of Forest City and Ruth Holtan, of Forest City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marian on Feb. 7, 1973; and his stepfather, Gilbert Tweeten.
** Joyce White
AREDALE — Joyce White, 77, of Aredale, died Wednesday (Dec. 23, 1998) at the Iowa Methodist Hospital, Des Moines.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Aredale United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mr. and Mrs. Connor officiating. Burial will be in the Harlan Cemetery, rural Dumont.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Dumont.
Joyce White was born Feb. 15, 1921, in Buckeye.
Survivors include her husband, Dalton White, of Aredale; two sons, Larry White, of Council Bluffs, and David White, of Des Moines; three daughters, Cheryl Peters, of Madera, Calif., Georgia Hasan, of Des Moines, and Debra Wilschutz, of Stow, Ohio; two sisters, Lela Hoffman, of Cambridge, Minn., and Eunice Simons, of Nixa, Mo.; one brother, Everett Underwood, of Calander; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, and one brother.
** William R. Sieling
RUDD — William R. Sieling, 73, of 502 Swartwood St., died Thursday (Dec. 24, 1998) at his home.
At his wish, there will be no funeral services. The Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., Charles City, is in charge of arrangements.
William Richard Sieling was born March 21, 1925, at Avon, S.D.
Survivors include his wife, Ardamae, of Rudd; a stepson, Dennis Kleen, of California; a stepdaughter, Darla Billings, of California; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.

** Orel Grace Caster
CLARION — Orel Grace Mechem Caster, 96, of Clarion, died Wednesday (Dec. 23, 1998) at the Clarion Health Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Willim Funeral Home, Clarion, with Mark Young officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Willim Funeral Home, Clarion.
Orel Mechem Caster was born Sept. 19, 1902, at Clarion.
Survivors include her children, Patricia Lee Phillips, of Phoenix; and James E. Caster, of Tinley Park, Ill.; five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Lynn Mechem, of Clarion.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother.
** Esther Hein
FOREST CITY — Esther Hein, 97, of Forest City, died Wednesday (Dec. 23, 1998) at home.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Faith Lutheran Church, in Miller, with the Rev. Owen Gaasedelen officiating. Burial will be in Madison Township Cemetery, Forest City.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to services. Cataldo Funeral Home, Garner, is in charge of arrangements.
Esther Sophia Hein was born Jan. 31, 1901, on a farm near Forest City.
Survivors include her daughter, Ruby Jante, of Garner; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mildred Strachan and Lilian Persons, both of Collinsville, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one grandson, her parents, three sisters, and three brothers.
** Oafae Lamfers
CLARION — Oafae Lamfers, 82, of Clarion died Thursday (Dec. 24, 1998) at the Community Memorial Hospital, Clarion.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, at the Chapel of Willim Funeral Home, Clarion, with Mark Young, of the Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Willim Funeral Home, Clarion.
Oafae Lamfers was born July 28, 1916, on a farm south of Kanawha, in Wright County.
Survivors include four sisters, Carrie Buseman, of Rockford, Frieda Mehus, of Austin, Minn., Gertie Paulson, of Garner, and Alice Lamfers, of Clarion.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and four sisters.
** Winifred Tjaden
CHARLES CITY — Winifred (Mrs. "Jake") Tjaden, 83, of 1002 Cedar St., died Wednesday (Dec. 23, 1998) at the Salsbury Baptist Home, Charles City.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Charles City, with the Rev. Dennis D. Niezwaag officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., with the family greeting friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. to noon on Monday at the funeral home and one hour prior to services at the church.
Winifred Margaret Guderian Tjaden was born Aug. 1, 1915, in Floyd County.
Survivors include one son, Craig Tjaden, of Charles City; one daughter, Janeane Christy, of Ottumwa; five grandchildren; four great-grandsons; and three step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters and one brother.
Memorials may be directed to the Hospice of North Iowa, Charles City Center, or the St. John Lutheran Church, of Charles City.

MASON CITY — Wayne L. Bigelow, 90, formerly of 9 Quincy Terrace, died Wednesday (Dec. 23, 1998) at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Des Moines.
Funeral services are tentatively set for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City, where other arrangements are incomplete.

ROCKFORD — Glenn M. Hall, 86, of 111 First Ave. S.E., Rockford, died Wednesday (Dec. 23, 1998) at home.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Fullerton Schumburg Funeral Home, 302 W. Main, Rockford.
The family will greet friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home where other arrangements are incomplete.

FOREST CITY — Pauline Hamm, 85, of Forest City, died Friday (Dec. 25, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

** Betty J. Shane
GARNER — Betty J. Shane, 63, of Garner, died Friday (Dec. 25, 1998) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, after a four year struggle with cancer.
There will be no visitation. Her body will be cremated.
Memorial services are pending at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. Mason City.

CLEAR LAKE — Vincent "V.A." Welsh, 95, of 15310 Pascal St., Clear Lake, died Wednesday (Dec. 23, 1998) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland, of Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating. There will be an Odd Fellows Service prior to going to the cemetery. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Major Erickson Funeral Home and until time of services on Monday.
Other arrangements are incomplete at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.
** Albert Sleper Jr.
BUFFALO CENTER — Albert Sleper Jr., 96, of Buffalo Center, died Wednesday (Dec. 23, 1998) at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the First Reformed Church, Buffalo Center, with the Rev. Bill Peake officiating. Burial will be in Olena Mound Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Winter Funeral Home, Buffalo Center, and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.
Albert Sleper Jr. was born March 19, 1902, in Buffalo Center.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby, of Buffalo Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers and six sisters.

** Vincent "V.A." Welsh
MASON CITY — Vincent "V.A" Welsh, 95, of 15310 Pascal St., Clear Lake, died Wednesday (Dec. 23, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. An Odd Fellows service will take place at the funeral home prior to going to the cemetery. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Mason City.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today and prior to the time of service Monday.
Memorials may be directed to the V. A. Welsh Memorial Fund.
Vincent Welsh was born Feb. 11, 1903, in rural Mason City to Frank and Martha (Schiff) Welsh. He graduated from Mason City High School and attended Mason City Junior College.
He married Olive Enabnit on July 22, 1923, at Evangelical Church, Mason City.
They farmed at Monona and Britt and owned a filling station at Marble Rock. Then they farmed at Rock Falls for a short time before returning to the family dairy farm at Mason City until retiring in 1965.
Vincent was a lifetime member of the Odd Fellows. He enjoyed spending time boating, fishing, hunting, camping. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends, attending baseball games, and with his grandchildren.
He will be missed by his wife, Olive Welsh, Clear Lake; his daughter, Avonne Gradin and her fiance, Hilton Willcox, Mason City; his grandson, Marlin Gradin and his special friend, Kathy Grimsley, Clear Lake; two great-grandchildren, Tracy Gradin, Hayfield, and Tara Gradin, Mason City; and two great-great-grandchildren, Chase and Mika.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Vera; a brother, Verle; one grandson, Timothy; and one great-great-grandson, Zaid.
** Ralph Cox
MASON CITY — Ralph Cox, 84, formerly of 300 Parkridge Dr. N.W., died Friday (Dec. 25, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church, 201 Willowbrook Dr. S.W., with the Rev. Terry Hamilton-Poore officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, and one hour prior to services at the church Wednesday.
Further funeral arrangements will be completed at Major Erickson Funeral Home.
** Louise Hawley
MASON CITY — Louise Hawley, 90, of 501 S. Tennessee Place, died Saturday (Dec. 12, 1998) at Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Mason City.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wayside Chapel, First United Methodist Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Sharon Betsworth officiating. Interment will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.
There will be no visitation. Funeral arrangements were completed by Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa or First United Methodist Church.
Louise Hawley was born Nov. 7, 1908, at Shenandoah, the daughter of Glenn L. and Janette C. (Jarmon) Howard. She graduated from what is now the University of Northern Iowa in 1928.
Before she was married, she taught school in Harvey and Marshalltown. Louise was married to William P. Hawley on Aug. 28, 1930, in Des Moines. They lived in various places — Des Moines, Vinton, Cedar Rap[ids and Milwaukee — and returned to Mason City in 1940.
Bill was employed with Armour and Co. from 1945 to 1961. Bill was a local auto dealer for several years. They left Mason City in 1967 when they moved to Madison, Wis., returning to Mason City in 1974 when they retired and spent the rest of their lives here.
Louise wanted to be remembered for her love of flowers. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, DAR, OES, Women's Club, and Universal Study Club.
Louise is survived by her son, Robert W. Hawley and his wife, Alice, Clear Lake; one grandson, Douglas A. Hawley and his wife, Jody, Des Moines; a granddaughter Leslie Hawley, Boston, Mass.; a great-grandson, Joshua Hawley, Des Moines; a sister, Virginia Adamson, Osage Beach, Mo.; two brothers, Lewis Howard and his wife, Mary, Loganville, Ga., and Bill Howard and his wife, Marge, Locus Grove, Va.; a sister-in-law, Ada Howard, Saginaw, Mich.; and many nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill; her son David; a daughter-in-law, Julie Hawley Morris; a grandson, Greg Hawley; a granddaughter, Christine Hawley; and a brother, Ted Howard.
** Esther LaMoyne Knowler
ALTOONA — Esther LaMoyne Knowler, 66, formerly of New Sharon and Mason City, died Wednesday (Dec. 23, 1998) at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 26, at the New Sharon Methodist Church with the Rev. Mark Tuttle, of the Altoona United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment took place in Friends Cemetery, New Sharon.
Visitation was held Saturday at the New Sharon Methodist Church where the family greeted friends.
A memorial fund has been established in her name.
Harden Funeral Home of New Sharon was in charge of arrangements.
Esther Knowler was born on Nov. 9, 1932, in Mahaska County, the daughter of Chanley and Lucile Sheesley Fleming. She was raised and educated in Mahaska County and graduated from New Sharon High School in 1950.
On Sept. 30, 1951, she was united in marriage to Ken Knowler at the Methodist Church in New Sharon. After living in Oskaloosa for a short time, they moved to New Sharon in 1954 where they stayed for 10 years. She and her family had lived in Muscatine, Mason City, and Algona before settling in Altoona in 1980.
Esther and her husband owned and operated fast-food drive-in restaurants. While in Mason City, they managed Henry's Drive-In. She began working as a legal secretary, a profession from which she retired in 1996. She was active in the PTA, was a Cub Scout Den Mother and was involved in many different organizations as her children grew up. She was a past Worthy Matron of the New Sharon Eastern Star and also a member of the Altoona United Methodist Church.
A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Esther is survived by her husband, Ken, of Altoona; her four sons, Scott and his wife, Dawn, of Carroll, Brad and his fiancee, Judy Le Clere, of Rockford, Ill., Dana and his wife, Jill, of Altoona, and Kelly and his wife, Joelle, of Altoona; eight grandchildren; her brother James Fleming, of Oskaloosa; and five sisters, Katherine Craver, Ruth Phillips, and Gayle Ferguson, all of New Sharon, May Klinzman, of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Arlene Cassens, of Conyers, Ga.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

ALGONA — Mae Hardgrove, 84, died Saturday (Dec. 26, 1998) at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Algona.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Algona.
** Carol V. Brager
BELMOND — Carol V. Brager, 77, died Friday (Dec. 25, 1998) at his residence in Belmond.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Belmond, with the Rev. James Carpenter officiating. Burial will be in Belmond Cemetery. Military rites will be performed by the Belmond Honor Guard.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Dugger-Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond.
Carol V. Brager was born Dec. 17, 1921, at Ventura.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred; two daughters, Meridee Swart, Belmond, and Marilyn Aarons, St. Peter, Minn.; a son, Daryl, Eagle Grove; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter and two brothers.
** Evelyn Luella Bjelland
LAKE MILLS — Evelyn Luella Bjelland, 93, died Friday (Dec. 25, 1998) at the Lake Mills Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Salem Lutheran Church, Lake Mills, with the Rev. Sara Beth Akre officiating. Interment will take place in Salem Memorial Cemetery, Lake Mills.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Mittlestadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills, and will resume one hour prior to the service at the church Tuesday.
Evelyn Luella Bjelland was born on a farm in Winnebago County near Emmons, Minn., Aug. 8, 1905.
She is survived by her daughter, Marlene Dawson, LaCrescent, Minn.; four grandsons; three great-grandsons; and one brother, Lawrence Stene, Aitkin, Minn.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, five sisters and two brothers.
** Esther Marie Suntken
MESERVEY — Esther Marie Suntken, 84, died Saturday (Dec. 26, 1998) at the Belmond Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Reformed Church, Meservey, with the Rev. Rodney Meester officiating. Interment will be in Immanuel Reformed Cemetery, Belmond.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Tenold Funeral Home, Belmond, and will resume one hour prior to services at the church Tuesday.
Esther Marie (Pals) Suntken, the daughter of John and Grace (Frey) Pals, was born on Nov. 27, 1914, in Wisner Township, Franklin County. She attended country schools.
On Jan. 22, 1937, Esther was united in marriage to Jesse Suntken at the First Reformed Church Parsonage in Meservey. To this union four children were born. The couple farmed near Alexander, Meservey and Belmond until 1982 when they retired and moved into Meservey.
Esther was a member of the First Reformed Church of Meservey. was a member of the RCW and taught Sunday School. She loved music, flowers and gardening. Esther truly loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them.

FOREST CITY — Pauline Hamm, 85, died Friday (Dec. 25, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Care Center East, Mason City.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Forest City, with the Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Clarion.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Peterson Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark, Forest City.
Pauline Hamm was born Feb. 27, 1913, the youngest of 13 children born to William and Teresa Zemke Piotraschke in rural Osceola County, near Sibley. Early in her youth, the family moved to a farm near Windom, Minn., where Pauline graduated from high school. She completed beauty school in Denver, Colo., in 1932.
In 1934 Pauline was united in marriage to Ralph "Hap" Eugene Hamm, and in 1937 they moved to Clarion where they raised two children. Their daughter, Teresa Mary Elizabeth Hamm Loux, attended Macalester College, was employed by WOW-TV in Omaha, undertook top secret work for the U.S. Government in Europe, and for many years was a partner with her husband in an auto parts business in Storm Lake. She died in 1993. Their son, Dr. William E. Hamm, is president of Waldorf College in Forest City.
After the death of her husband in 1973, Pauline became a librarian for the Clarion Public Library, which was a labor of love for the next 22 years. She retired from the library at age 82 and moved to Forest City to be closer to her son.
During her years in Clarion, she was always active in the life of First Lutheran Church. She headed the women's group and served as superintendent of the Sunday School. She also taught Sunday School for pre-schoolers for many years. Since moving to Forest City, she has been an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her son, Dr. William E. Hamm, of Forest City; many relatives and friends; and a beloved Yorkshire terrier, KoKo.
She was preceded in death by her husband, daughter, parents and all 12 of her siblings.

ROCKFORD — Glenn M. Hall, 86, of 111 First Avenue S.E., died Wednesday (Dec. 23, 1998) at his home.

Glenn was born on Nov. 19, 1912, at Oster Township in Floyd County, the son of John Elmer and Matilda Mae (Warren) Hall. He graduated from Rockford High School and then drove his truck on long-haul routes until his retirement in November of 1977. He meticulously maintained his trucks and was very proud that he never had an accident in all his years of driving.
Glenn was united in marriage to Lorraine L. Griggs on Oct. 9, 1933, at Ottumwa, Minn., and to this marriage was born one daughter.
In his off time, Glenn enjoyed traveling and staying in Florida, Arizona and Texas. He also loved fishing with his family at Hayward, Minn. He enjoyed the challenges of doing bookwork and taxes accurately and playing games with his grandchildren. He was a member of the Rockford United Methodist Church and a former member of the Mason City Moose Lodge.
Glenn leaves his wife of 65 years, Lorraine, of Rockford; his daughter, Deloris and her husband, Orlando Lindley, of Nora Springs; three grandchildren, Tami Lindley of Altoona, David and his wife, Deb Lindley, of Rockford, Scot and Joanna Lindley of Nora Springs; three great-grandchildren; and his sister, Myrtle Kuhlemeier, Clear Lake.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Roger, Earl and an infant brother, Gilbert; and one sister, Iola Greenswag.

Clifford R. Mott was born May 9, 1909, in Mason City at the address where he had lived all his life, 686 Eighth St. S.E., the son of Leonard W. and Anna (Iler) Mott. He attended Mason City Public Schools and began work at the People's Gas and Electric Company (later Interstate Power) in 1929. He was employed there until 1974, working a total of 45 years in the gas and service department.
He was married to Cecelia Krapp on June 20, 1935, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mason City.
Clifford was a charter member of the local International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union, No. 432. He also belonged to the Mason City Senior Center, the Hawkeye Camera Club, the American Association of Retired People, the Interstate Power Quarter Century Club, the Retired Breakfast Club, the North Iowa Golden Wedding Club and was also a long-time member of the North Iowa Men's Garden Club and the Chamber of Commerce Senior Men's Club. He was the Boy Scout leader of the Explorer Post for many years.
Clifford was also well known for raising vegetables, especially sweet corn, for many years, and his hobbies included fishing, traveling, taking pictures and playing cards.
He is survived by his wife Cecelia Mott, Mason City; one daughter, Marcele Kaduce and her husband, Carroll, Mason City; four sons, Kenneth R. Mott, Dubuque, Douglas C. Mott, Dubuque, Roger E. Evert was born Sept. 13, 1925, in Carrville, the son of Eldon and Hattie Bartlett High. He worked for the Illinois Central Railroad and Mayflower Moving and Storage. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II.

Hazel was born Sept. 12, 1918, in Mason City, the daughter of William E. and Myrtle (Tuthill) Gardinier. She attended school in Mason City.
She married John R. McCaulley April 1, 1941, in Albert Lea, Minn. Hazel worked for Risto for several years, was a Girl Scout leader and enjoyed traveling to Alaska, Phoenix and Boston to see children and grandchildren.
Mrs. McCaulley was known as "Grandma" by many people because of her gentle, caring way and love of people. She also enjoyed flower gardening, nature, bird watching, feeding squirrels and caring for her dog and cat. Hazel was a avid tennis and hockey fan and could be seen at many Mohawk hockey games.
Hazel is survived by one daughter, Linda Gilmore, Mason City; a son, Robert McCalley, and his wife, Kay, of Phoenix, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four sisters, Ruth Miller, Gladys McDougle, Marion Gardinier and Bonnie Gardinier, all of Mason City; a brother, Clinton Gardinier, Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John McCaulley; one brother; one sister; and two grandchildren.

Rose Myrtle Lien was born on Feb. 14, 1908, in Northwood, the daughter of Gilbert H. and Elise (Myhre) Hanson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the Northwood Lutheran Church.
She received her elementary education in the public schools in Northwood, and following graduation from high school in 1926, she entered Fairview Hospital School of Nursing and continued in the nursing profession at Fairview after graduating.
Rose was united in marriage to Palmer A. Lien on April 15, 1931, in Kensett and over the years they made their home in Kensett, Minden, Neola, Somers and Royal. After retirement they moved to Northwood in 1973.
They were the parents of a son, David Lien, and a daughter, Sonja (Mrs. Scott Vincent), both of whom survive. She is also survived by five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one sister, Edith Hanson.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one brother, Gilman Hanson; and a grandson, Scott Vincent.

Betty JoAnn Shane was born Dec. 9, 1935, in Rockford, the daughter of William and Marie (Frenz) Carrott. She graduated from Clear Lake High School.
On Aug. 30, 1967, she married Neal Shane in Canton, S. D.
Betty was an open-minded, outgoing, trusting, caring person, who loved helping people. She was "Mom" to many, many "adopted" kids. She loved to fish and collect teddy bears, of which she had close to 250. She also enjoyed good country music and working crossword puzzles.
Betty commanded respect without asking for it. She will be dearly missed for she was one of a kind and the world was a brighter and more cheerful place for her being in it.

Louise Hawley was born Nov. 7, 1908, at Shenandoah, the daughter of Glenn L. and Janette C. (Jarmon) Howard. She graduated from what is now the University of Northern Iowa in 1928.
Before she was married, she taught school in Harvey and Marshalltown. Louise was married to William P. Hawley on Aug. 28, 1930, in Des Moines. They lived in various places — Des Moines, Vinton, Cedar Rapids and Milwaukee — and returned to Mason City in the early 1940s. Bill was employed at Armour and Co. for a short time and then as a local auto dealer from 1945 to 1961. They left Mason City in 1967 when they moved to Madison, Wis., returning to Mason City in 1974 when they retired and spent the rest of their lives here.
Louise wanted to be remembered for her love of flowers. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, DAR, OES, Women's Club, and Universal Study Club.
Louise is survived by her son, Robert W. Hawley, and his wife, Alice, Clear Lake; one grandson, Douglas A. MASON CITY — Wayne L. Bigelow, 90, formerly of 9 Quincy Terrace, died Wednesday (Dec. 23, 1998) at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Des Moines.

GARNER — Betty J. Shane, 63, died Friday (Dec. 25, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, after a four-year struggle with cancer.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N. E., Mason City, with the Rev. John Ayers, chaplain of Hospice of North Iowa, officiating.
There will be no visitation. Her body was cremated.
Betty JoAnn Shane was born Dec. 9, 1935, in Rockford, the daughter of William and Marie (Frenz) Carrott. She graduated from Clear Lake High School.
On Aug. 30, 1967, she married Neal Shane in Canton, S. D.
Betty was an open-minded, outgoing, trusting, caring person, who loved helping people. She was "Mom" to many, many "adopted" kids. She loved to fish and collect Teddy bears, of which she had close to 250. She also enjoyed good country music and working crossword puzzles.
Betty commanded respect without asking for it. She will be dearly missed for she was one of a kind and the world was a brighter and more cheerful place for her being in it.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Neal Shane, Garner; five children, Marcy Ackley and her husband, Neil, Garner, Lori Avise and her husband, Jerry, Rockwell, Jean Felts and her husband, Lonnie, Lexington, N. C., Michelle Shane, Mason City, and Tracy Molnar and her husband, Jim, Abilene, Texas; grandchildren, Chris Avise, Marie Felts, Billy Felts and Rebecca Molnar; one sister, Sharon Bailey and her husband, Larry, Plymouth; two brothers, Michael Carrott and his wife, Virginia, Clear Lake, and Jeff Carrott and his wife, Pame, Mason City; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and her cats, Puff and Mitten Kitten.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Michael Shane.
** Hazel M. McCaulley
MASON CITY — Hazel M. McCaulley, 80, of 815 N. Pennsylvania Ave., died Saturday (Dec. 26, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.
Funeral services were held Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Barbara McCaulley, Mrs. McCaulley's niece, officiating. Interment was in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to the Hazel M. McCaulley Memorial Fund.
Hazel was born Sept. 12, 1918, in Mason City, the daughter of William E. and Myrtle (Tuthill) Gardinier. She attended school in Mason City.
She married John R. McCaulley April 1, 1941, in Albert Lea, Minn. Hazel worked for Risto for several years, was a Girl Scout leader and enjoyed traveling to Alaska, Phoenix and Boston to see children and grandchildren.
Mrs. McCaulley was known as "Grandma" by many people because of her gentle, caring way and love of people. She also enjoyed flower gardening, nature, bird watching, feeding squirrels and caring for her dog and cat. Hazel was an avid tennis and hockey fan and could be seen at many Mohawk hockey games.
Hazel is survived by one daughter, Linda Gilmore, Mason City; a son, Robert McCaulley, and his wife, Kay, of Phoenix, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four sisters, Ruth Miller, Gladys McDougle, Marion Gardinier and Bonnie Gardinier, all of Mason City; a brother, Clinton Gardinier, Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John McCaulley; one brother; one sister; and two grandchildren.

KENSETT — Ruth A. Grosland, 73, of 212 Walnut, died Sunday afternoon (Dec. 27, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Ruth was born on May 22, 1925, on a farm northeast of Mason City, to William G. and Mary (Tyler) Platts. She was one of seven children. She attended school in Mason City and then was united in marriage to Alvar Olson. To this marriage were born two children, Barbara Query of Clear Lake and Gerald A. "Gary" and his wife, Charlene Olson, of Janesville, Wis.
Later she married Forrest Shropshire and to this marriage were born three children, Sandi Singleton of Savannah, Ga., Becky from Omaha, Neb., and William (Bill) Babb of Sioux City. She also has two stepchildren, Forrest J. Shropshire Jr. of Montibello, Calif., and Daryle Shropshire. Later she took the name of her third husband, Selmer Grosland.
She lived in Mason City most of her life and raised beautiful story-book roses. She also enjoyed word and crossword puzzles and loved dancing and crocheting. She moved to Kensett in about 1979.
Along with her children, Ruth is also survived by her 13 grandchildren, Steven, Scott, Susan, Cyndi and Michael Olson, Gary, Kari, Brad and Tara Winters, Thaddeus, Caleb, Sarah Babb and Sheila Singleton; 21 great-grandchildren; one sister, Marjorie and her husband, Vern Larson, Clear Lake; her sister-in-law, Dorothy Platts, Mason City; two stepdaughters, Darlene and her husband, Nick Fountas, Newton, and Mrs. R.E.Hennick, Des Moines; two stepsons, Ron and his wife, Ada Grosland, Austin, Minn., and Darrell Grosland, Palm Springs, Calif.; her special friend, Curt Reyerson; and many, many nieces and nephews.

CEDAR RAPIDS — Caroline B. Thoresen, 80, formerly of Iowa City, died Monday (Dec. 28, 1998) at Manor Care Health Services in Cedar Rapids, following a lengthy illness.

Caroline B. Thoresen was born Aug. 21, 1918, in Clear Lake, Iowa, the daughter of Benjamin and Margaret (Nielsen) Fredricks. Caroline graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1937.
She was married to Carlyn Thoresen on Dec. 23, 1939, in Mason City, Iowa. In 1968, she moved with her family to Iowa City. She has lived in Cedar Rapids the past five years.
Caroline is survived by a son, Carlyn "Carl" Thoresen and his wife Jane, of Cedar Rapids; and a brother, Andrew G. Fredericks and his wife Rosalynne, of Hiawatha.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1994; and a sister, June Peterson.

OSAGE — George Kroneman, 82, died on Sunday (Dec. 27, 1998) at his residence in Osage.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Rock Township, Mitchell County, with the Rev. Rose Marie Nack officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Rock Township. Military honors will be performed by the Walter T. Enneberg Post No. 358 of the American Legion, St. Ansgar.

George was born on Feb. 27, 1916, in Rock Township, Mitchell County, to Emil Kroneman and Mary Newman Kroneman. He was baptized on May 9, 1916, and confirmed on Aug. 13, 1930, at St. John's Lutheran Church.
He grew up and attended school in Rock Township where he enjoyed ice skating and baseball.
George worked for area farmers until joining the armed services. He spent four and a half years in the service during World War II as a sergeant in the Army.
After being discharged from the service, he started farming. He married Twila Cooper in 1952 in Manly. He enjoyed farming and took pride in his work. They enjoyed dancing, walking and traveling.
In 1995 they moved to Osage where he enjoyed taking care of his yard and decorating for the holidays. George took great pleasure in seeing his grandchildren and playing different games with them. He was a faithful member of St. John's Lutheran Church, serving on the church board.
George is survived by his wife, Twila, Osage; four daughters, Carla and her husband, Tom Benson, Eagan, Minn., Chloe Ann and her husband, Scott Stumo, Northwood, Cheryl and her husband, Jerry Ginder, Mason City, and Caren and her husband, Curtis, Grafton; five grandchildren, Jessica Beyer, Northwood, Brian and Kevin Ginder, Mason City, and Courtney and Caylee, Grafton; three brothers, Lloyd Kroneman, Grafton, Rueben Kroneman, St. Ansgar, and Glenn Kroneman, Carpenter; and one sister, Clara Ones, Osage.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Laura, Grace and Myrtle; and one brother, Alvin.

NORA SPRINGS — Alta Mae Sutton, 92, of 316 Gaylord St., died Sunday (Dec. 27, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Alta Mae Sutton was born June 25, 1906, in Plymouth, daughter of Charles and Lora Obrecht Molsberry. She graduated from Plymouth schools in 1925 and then worked for Frank Peshak Grocery Store prior to her marriage to Ervin Earl Sutton on Dec. 25, 1927.
They farmed near Plymouth nearly 15 years then moved north of Nora Springs and farmed until Ervin's death in 1964. Alta moved to her current home in February of 1965.
She was a lifelong member of Plymouth United Methodist Church. She was active in the WCTU, Farmers Wives and Daughters, Gray Ladies, Sunshine Circle, the Red Cross, and was an Avon Rep for seven years.
Survivors include six children, Earl Sutton and his wife, Carol, of Rudd; William Clayton Sutton, of Nora Springs; Janet Peterson, of Nora Springs; Lora Tourtellott and her husband, Jerald, of Osage; Clinton Sutton and his wife, Karen, of Hastings, Minn.; and Linda Kohler and her husband, Mike, of Mason City; 19 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Eva Harmon, of Plymouth; two sisters-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant daughter, Bonnie Crystal Sutton; a daughter, Carrol Bernice; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two sons-in-law.

Ralph Eugene Cox was born Sept. 2, 1914, in Bismark, N.D., to William E. and Bertha Ellen (Rouse) Cox. Ralph graduated from high school in Holton, Kan.
Ralph moved to Mason City in 1938 and started a small appliance repair shop in the basement of the old Globe-Gazette building on East State Street. Later he moved, enlarging his business, into Ralph's Bicycle Shop on South Delaware. As his business grew he owned and operated Ralph's Bicycle and Hobby Shop on Sixth Street S.W. before retiring.
Ralph married Ruth Harding on July 22, 1947, in Mason City. Through their married life they lived on South Jefferson and then moved to an acreage in Manly, Iowa, and then finally to Parkridge Drive, before entering the Good Shepherd Nursing Home in June of this year.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Mason City.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ruth Cox, Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Mason City; one daughter, Jean (Cox) Morgan and her husband, Michael Morgan, of Virginia Beach, Va.; one son, Alan A. Cox, of Forest City, Iowa; six grandchildren, Sarah, Stephen, Robert, Glenn, Grace Morgan and Elizabeth (Morgan) Craft, all of Virginia Beach, Va.; one sister, Florence Felker and her husband, Henry, of Garner, Iowa; nieces and nephews, and special friends, Gerald and Jean O'Brien, of Mason City, Iowa.

EMMONS, Minn. — Funeral service for Joann Grund, 65, of Emmons, was held Monday, Dec. 28, at St. Theodore's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Donald Zenk officiating. Interment was in St. Theodore's Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation was held Sunday, Dec. 27, at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home.
Joann died Wednesday (Dec. 23, 1998) at Methodist Hospital, Rochester, after a long, quiet and courageous battle with cancer. She was a devoted wife, mother and loving grandmother. Joann will be greatly missed by her family and many good friends.
Joann was born Dec. 1, 1933, in rural Britt, Iowa, the daughter of Harold and Gertrude (Kelly) McCormick. Joann grew up in the Garner and Ventura, Iowa areas, graduating from Ventura High School in 1951.
On Sept. 23, 1952, she was united in marriage with John Grund at Garner, Iowa. The couple lived for a few months near Joice, Iowa, moving to a farm west of Emmons in 1953.
Joann worked at home for 20 years, raising her six sons before deciding to work outside the home. She worked for Iowa Printed Circuits, Larson Manufacturing and most recently Fleetguard Inc. for 17 years.
She was a member of St. James Catholic Church, Twin Lakes, where she was active in the church organizations. She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary in Albert Lea and the American Legion Auxiliary in Emmons.
Joann enjoyed dancing, traveling, shopping and spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, John, of Emmons; children, Raymond and wife, Jane, of Albert Lea and their children, Michael and Laura; Ronald, of Aurora, Colo.; Randy, of Rochester; James, of Albert Lea and his fiancee, Diana Wangen, and his children, Marie, Jeremy and Bryan; Jerry and wife, Janet, of Lee's Summit, Mo., and their children, Nicole, Danielle and Jesse; and Jeffrey and wife, Marsha, of Woodbury, Minn., and their children, Apryl and Adam; sister, Audrey and husband, Joseph Lenz, of Pleasant Hill, Mo.; aunt, Charlotte and husband, Stan Ziesmer, of Garner, Iowa; aunt, Nadine McCormick, of Spencer, Iowa; aunt, Barbara Kelly, of Austin; and many nieces and nephews.

She received her education in rural schools near Dougherty. On Oct. 30, 1917, she was united in marriage to John H. Skillen in Greene, Iowa. To this union two children were born, Bernard M. and Juanita I. The family made their home in Greene. On Feb. 14, 1946, she was united in marriage to Kenneth C. Henline in Greene. Kenneth passed away Oct. 28, 1982.
Ida was employed with area restaurants in the Greene area and also worked at the Allen Hospital in Waterloo. Some of her special interests were gardening and working with flowers. She loved birds and animals of all kinds and had several pets, all of whom she named Cookie. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greene, where she belonged to the U.P.W.
Living family members include a daughter-in-law, Lavonne E. Skillen, of Waterloo; a stepdaughter, Marilyn Scholle, of Charles City; two grandchildren, Kandace Lee Good and Deva Rae Good, both of Waterloo; two stepgrandchildren, Steve Hoeft, of Charles City, and Barbi Carpenter, of Skiatook, Okla.; seven stepgreat-grandchildren, Benjamin Hoeft, Adam, Molly, Mae, Emily, Katy, and Ethan Carpenter; and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a special friend, Mildred Stout, of the Liebe Care Center, in Greene.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth; two children, Bernard M. Skillen and Juanita I. Bean; two sisters, Lillie Bruns and Emma Morey; and two brothers, Enno Cirks and Ben Cirks.

MASON CITY — Jay "J" V. Richey, 74, of 336 24th St. S.W., died Monday (Dec. 28, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, 2502 S. Jefferson Ave., with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today with a Moose Memorial Service at 7 p.m. at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E.

Jay was born Sept. 1, 1924, the son of John and Nellie (Vanosdol) Richey in Ventura. After attending school Jay began working on a local farm. At the age of 17 he was drafted into the United States Army to serve his country in World War II. At the time of separation he had received the following decorations and citations: two Overseas Service Bars, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three Bronze Battle Stars, Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. Jay was very proud of his military service.
Jay was very involved in the VFW where he had been past commander and was currently active in the Honor Guard. He was an excellent cook who enjoyed making his chicken fried steak specialty for his family. His five grandchildren were the apple of his eye and he enjoyed spending time with them whenever possible. In his younger days Jay enjoyed fishing and later making trips to the casinos with his friends. He played cards, enjoyed dancing, and doing counted cross stitch. He was an active cribbage player and had just competed in a tournament on Saturday. Jay could always be found as the life of the party with a story to tell. Jay was especially proud when he and his wife celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. He was a former board member of the Lehigh Credit Union, member of the Moose Lodge #1328, and the San Juan-Marne VFW Post 733.
Those thankful for having shared Jay's life include his wife, Gladys; three sons, Jay W. and his wife, Marilyn Richey, of Mason City, Terry J. Richey of Clear Lake, and Perry T. and his wife, Darla Richey, of Kensett; two sisters, Gladyce Gasaway of Mason City, and Birdye VanHyfte of Hemphill, Texas; five grandchildren, Amy and her husband, Chris Oelkers, Cindy, Bryan, Eric and Adam Richey; and many nieces and nephews.

** Cecil L. Carberry
MASON CITY — Cecil L. Carberry, 78, of 915 N. Pierce Ave., died Tuesday (Dec. 29, 1998) at the Manly Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. David Shogren officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with full military rites by members of the Mason City Memorial Association.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.
Cecil LeRoy Carberry was born June 9, 1920, the son of Abner and Lucy (Freeman) Carberry, in Meltonville, Iowa. Cecil was educated in Worth and Mitchell counties and graduated from Otranto High School in 1938.
Cecil enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from December of 1941 to December of 1947. He served in the American area and the Asiatic Pacific. Cecil also served during the Korean conflict in the Atlantic area from December of 1950 to December of 1952.
Cecil began work for People's Gas and Electric in 1948, which later became Interstate Power Company. He worked there for 36 years, retiring in 1984.
He married Barbara C. Shamber on Sept. 5, 1953, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.
Cecil enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and archery. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, V.F.W. and the Mason City Archery Club. He also was a former member of the Moose Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Carberry, of the Manly Care Center; son, Jerry Carberry and his wife, Mara, of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Matthew, Jacob, Tyler and Shannon; seven brothers, Marion Carberry of Aredale, Arthur Carberry and his wife, Vivian, of Mason City, Merle Carberry and his wife, Marilyn, of Lake Villa, Ill., Raymond Carberry of Albert Lea, Minn., Wayne Carberry and his wife, Carol, of Prescott Valley, Ariz., Paul Carberry and his wife, Sue, of Prescott Valley, Ariz., and Howard Carberry and his wife, Sharon, of Lorena, Texas; two sisters, Edith Coy and her husband, Lloyd, of Shellsburg, and Esther Carberry of Hyden, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Lois Carberry.
** Elma L. Zieman
MASON CITY — Elma L. Zieman, 64, of 777 S. Eisenhower Ave., No. 164, died Tuesday (Dec. 29, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit after a lengthy, courageous battle with cancer.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. Joe Dahlen of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.
Elma L. Zieman was born Aug. 30, 1934, in rural Lakeview, daughter of Frank and Gladys (Davis) Hawks. She married Willard Huse in 1953 and was later married to Theodore "Ted" Zieman.
Elma grew up in Wall Lake and graduated from Wall Lake High School. She worked at State Brand Creamery, Black Plumbing and Heating, Alco, Alexander Manufacturing and most recently at Target.
She enjoyed going to garage sales and playing bingo and was an avid race car fan.
Survivors include her husband, Ted Zieman of Mason City; one daughter, Pam Hildebrand and her husband, Skip, of Mason City; two sons, Dean Huse and his wife, Carol, of Houston, Texas, and Terry Zieman and Carla, of Mason City; one stepdaughter, Zandra Griffiths and her husband, Sam, of Kissimmee, Fla.; two sisters, Marvel Burchell of Lake View and Janice Scott of Wall Lake; two brothers, William Hawks of Sac City and James Hawks of Akron; five grandchildren, Jacob Zieman, Joshua Zieman and Jeremy Hildebrand, all of Mason City, Jamie Dean Huse of Houston, Texas, and Zane Griffiths of Jacksonville, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Karen Olsen; and one brother, Melvin Hawks.

** Robert Henry Slining
BELMOND — Robert Henry Slining, 76, of Belmond, died Tuesday (Dec. 29, 1998) at the Concord Care Center in Garner.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Church of Christ Congregational, Belmond, with the Rev. Lynne Spencer-Smith officiating. Interment will be in the Belmond Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Tenold Funeral Home, Belmond, and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.
Robert Henry Slining, the son of Harry and Eunice (Reed) Slining, was born on June 26, 1922, in Belmond. Bob grew up in a family of eight children on his parents' farm. He graduated from Belmond High School. He began work as a hired farm hand in the local community and eventually began farming for himself.
On Sept. 30, 1944, Bob was united in marriage to Donna Benson. She passed away on Jan. 7, 1970.
Bob was united in marriage to Martha Klinge on Dec. 1, 1970, at the United Church of Christ Congregational in Belmond.
Bob was a member of the United Church of Christ Congregational in Belmond, where he served on the Board of Trustees for several years.
In retirement, he enjoyed woodworking, garden tilling and lawn work. He also had an interest in antique cars, one of which he refinished himself.
Survivors include his wife, Martha, of Belmond; daughter, Roxanne Patterson of St. Louis, Mo.; son, Lynn Slining of Des Moines; stepdaughter, Delorys Lonnevik and her husband, Marvin, of Britt; stepsons, Lyle Klinge of Seneca, S.C., and Kendall Klinge and his wife, Susan, of Belmond; son-in-law, Dennis Didio of Belmond; four sisters, Mildred Macri and her husband, Michael, of Des Moines, Arlene Davis and her husband, Donald, of Harlan, Joann Kuester and her husband, Irv, of Belmond, and Janet Thornton and her husband, Richard, of Huxley; two brothers, Glen Slining of Silverton, Colo., and Harry Slining Jr. and his wife, Marlene, of Babbitt, Minn.; sister-in-law, Marjorie Slining of Belmond; five grandchildren, Stacey, Michelle, Gina, Diena and Ryan; four stepgrandchildren, Amber, Ashley, Tanner and Shaina; and three great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Lucas and Tristan.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his first wife, Donna, in 1970; daughter, Kathy Didio; brother, Duane; and a sister in infancy.

ALGONA — John C. Love, 90, of Algona, died Sunday (Dec. 27, 1998) at the Good Samaritan Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at First Lutheran Church with the Rev. Daniel Mangler officiating. Burial will be in the Central Freeborn Lutheran Cemetery, Albert Lea, Minn.
John C. Love was born Nov. 22, 1908, in Garner.
Survivors include his wife, Ella, of Algona; one brother, Quentin Love, of Mesa, Ariz.; and sister, Opal Klepec, of Edmonds, Wash.

AREDALE — Milton R. Dye, 93, of Aredale, died Wednesday (Dec. 30, 1998) at Franklin General Hospital, Hampton.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Aredale United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Connor officiating. Burial will be in the Dumont Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Dumont.

Milton R. Dye was born May 2, 1905, in Aredale.
Survivors include one daughter, Marilyn Flege of Waverly; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Maxine Ayers of Aredale.

CLEAR LAKE — Sandra K. Bateman, 52, of 626 18th St. W., died Tuesday (Dec. 29, 1998) at home.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later time in Longmont, Colo.
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, is in charge of arrangements.
Sandra was born Feb. 5, 1946, in Mason City.
Survivors include two sons, Mark Alan Bateman of Erie, Colo., and Daniel Bateman of Clear Lake; and one grandson.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

MANLY — Roland Carter, 87, of Manly, died Tuesday (Dec. 29, 1998) at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn.
According to his wishes, his body was cremated and memorial services will be held at a later date.
Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, is in charge of arrangements.
Roland Carter was born on Oct. 21, 1911, in Washington County.
Survivors include his wife, A. Lucille Carter, of the Manly Nursing & Rehabilitation Center; a daughter, Marilyn Dorsey of Kensett; a son, Roger Carter of Joice; two stepdaughters, Barb Havill of Thornton and Betty Jensen of California; one stepson, Garrell Liblin of California; two brothers, Gaylord Carter of Waterloo and Orville Carter of Iowa City; one sister, Creta Thirtyacres of Iowa City; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.
