** Evelyn Smolik
OSAGE — Evelyn Smolik, 83, died Sunday (Nov. 29, 1998) at the Faith Home, Osage.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p..m. Wednesday at United Church of Christ, Osage, with the Rev. Robert Melhorn officiating. Burial will be in Osage Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Champion Funeral Home, Osage, with a prayer service beginning at 7 p.m.
Evelyn Smolik was born April 10, 1915, at Rosemont, Neb., the daughter of the Rev. Henry and Charlotte (Proett) Ahrens. She attended school at Lawrence, Neb., and graduated from Lawrence High School. She came to Osage with her parents in 1945.
Evelyn married Edward Smolik on Oct. 28, 1947, at Eden Presbyterian Church. The couple made their home on a farm near Osage.
She has resided at Faith Lutheran Home in Osage the past two years.
Evelyn is survived by her husband, Edward Smolik, Osage; a brother, Edward Ahrens and his wife, Lena, Osage; a twin brother, the Rev. Milton Ahrens and his wife, Zorka, Duluth, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Erma Ahrens, Osage; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, the Rev. Chester Ahrens; and a sister, Esther Ahrens; and an infant sister, Anna.
** Theodore Brinkman
GREENE — Theordore Brinkman, 92, of 23175 150th St., died Monday (Nov. 30, 1998) at the Clarksville Community Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Vilmar, with the Rev. Norman Omodt officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, Greene, with a scripture service beginning at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.
Theodore Brinkman was born Aug. 29, 1906, in Dayton Township, Butler County.
He is survived by his daughter, Vae Gindt, of Omaha, Neb.; two sons, Galen Brinkman and Dean Brinkman, both of Greene; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, two grandsons, his parents, and three brothers.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Theodore Brinkman Memorial Fund in care of the family.
** Norman L. McCutchen
ST. CHARLES, Mo. — Norman L. McCutchen, 75, died Friday (Nov. 27, 1998) at Brookview Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel, St. Louis. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, 10180 Gravois, St. Louis.
There will be no visitation. Baue Funeral Home, 620 Jefferson Street, St. Charles, Mo., is in charge of all arrangements.
Norman L. McCutchen was born Sept. 17, 1923, in East St. Louis, Ill.
He was an engineer and worked for the aerospace manufacturer, Rockwell International, Mason City, until his retirement.
Norman is survived by his wife, Marian McCutchen, St. Charles, Mo.; a son, Robert L. McCutchen, St. Peters, Mo.; a daughter, Linda K. Podorski and her husband, Richard, Atlanta; a daughter-in-law, April McCutchen Kochan, Raleigh, N.C.; a brother, Franklin L. McCutchen and his wife, Pat, West Virginia; two granddaughters, Deena M. Fischer and her husband, Kevin, and Katherine McCutchen; and four grandsons, Christopher McCutchen, Kelly McCutchen, Jeffrey McCutchen, and Jonathan McCutchen.
He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Leroy McCutchen; his mother, Elsie Marie McCutchen; and his son, James N. McCutchen.
Memorials may be directed to Washington University Memory & Aging Research or St. Louis Alzheimer Association through the Baue Funeral Home, St. Charles.
** Kate L. Harrison
CLEAR LAKE — Kate L. Harrison, 47, 706 10th Ave., died Sunday (Nov. 29, 1998) at the Sunrise Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Mason City.
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 102 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, was in charge of the cremation. There are no services planned.
Kate was born Dec. 11, 1950, in Mason City.
She is survived by her daughter, Melonie Allyn-Schwerin, Lauderdale, Minn.; one granddaughter; and her mother, Lorraine Buck, Clear Lake.
She was preceded in death by her father and one brother.
** Donald Francis Barr
MASON CITY — Donald Francis Barr, 76, died Saturday (Nov. 28, 1998) at his home in rural Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 412 N. Broadway St., Manly, with the Rev. Thomas F. McAndrew officiating. Interment will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City. A scripture wake service will begin at 7 p.m. today at the Funeral Home.
Memorials may be directed to the Donald F. Barr Memorial Fund.
Donald Francis Barr was born on Jan. 13, 1922, to Charles and Mary Ellen (Broderick) Barr in Ossian. He attended the local Catholic school until the eleventh grade when his father died and he had to work to help support his family.
He was drafted into the Army in November 1942, seeing combat in France and Germany with the 102nd Infantry Ozark Division, earning the Bronze Battle Star among other decorations and attaining the rank of staff sergeant.
After World War II, he re-enlisted and served under General MacArthur during the occupation of Japan. When he came home in 1949, he went to work for the railroad and retired from the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad in 1982.
He was married to Bertha Martin Venz at the Little Brown Church on June 20, 1966. They spent the next 22 years raising their family of seven children until Bertha’s death on March 16, 1988.
Until his age caught up to him, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, canning vegetables and reading. He had a great sense of humor and he had a soft spot for small children. His family will remember him taking his grandsons for drives in his pickup along the river roads, looking for pheasants and telling them tall stories.
He will be sadly missed by his sons, Gary Venz and Debbie Venz, Guy Venz and his wife, Becky, Glen Venz and his wife, Kim, and daughters, Georgienna Butler and her husband, Dale, Gerri Winter and her husband, Tim, Glori Davis and her husband, Joe, and Francine Nuehring and her husband, Don, all of Calmar; 16 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha; his parents; three brothers; four sisters; and two granddaughters.
** Clara "Rena" Tyler
OSAGE — Clara "Rena" Tyler, 87, died Monday (Nov. 30, 1998) at Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, Osage.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Champion Funeral Home, Osage, with the Rev. Jerry Newland officiating. Burial will take place in Osage Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Champion Funeral Home.
Clara was born May 14, 1911, on the family farm near Osage.
She is survived by two daughters, Dorothy Counsell, Osage, and Marian Rust, St. Ansgar; one son, William Tyler, Janesville, Wis.; one sister, Martha Haehn, Grand Meadow, Minn.; one brother, Ralph Cummings, Osage; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Clara was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one great-grandson, five brothers, and four sisters.
** Dale G. Keifer
CHARLES CITY — Dale G. Keifer, 83, of 10 Cedar Terrace S., died Sunday (Nov. 29, 1998) at the Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Grace United Methodist Church, Floyd, with the Rev. Blair Rohde-Frank officiating. Burial will take place in the Oakwood Cemetery, Floyd.
Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. today at the Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service will begin at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.
Dale George Keifer was born Nov. 21, 1915, at Nora Springs.
He is survived by his wife, Florence, Charles City; a son, Curtis Keifer, Charles City; a daughter, Patty Palmersheim, Charles City; two sisters, Beulah deBuhr, Rockford, and Audrey Norman, Long Beach, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, a brother, and a sister.

FOREST CITY — Cindy Stalzer, 39, died Saturday (Nov. 29, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Care Center East, Mason City.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Leland, with the Rev. Dan Christensen officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery, Leland.
Visitation will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, Forest City.
Cindy Stalzer was born April 3, 1959, in Forest City.
She is survived y her parents, Donna and Richard Olson, Forest City, and two sisters, Dian Olson, Sommerville, Mass.; and Susan Tegtmeyer, Englewood, Colo.
She was preceded in death by her paternal and maternal grandparents.

CHARLES CITY — Albert F. "Al" Hood, 76, of 906 Seventh Ave., died Sunday (Nov. 29, 1998) at the Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, US Highway 18 and Clark Street, Charles City; Monsignor Stanley J. Hayek will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City, with graveside military honors conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.
Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City. A scriptural wake service will begin at 7 p.m. followed by a rosary led by the Knights of Columbus Charles City Council No. 1409 Thursday at the funeral home. MANLY — Margaret M. Reindl, 92, of Manly, died Tuesday (Dec. 1, 1998) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

MASON CITY — Beatrice S. Dyre, 89, of 501 S. Kentucky Ave., died Tuesday (Dec. 1, 1998) at the Heritage Care Center.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City.
** Edna Esther Hansing
LAKE MILLS — Edna Esther Hansing, 82, of Lake Mills, died Saturday (Nov. 28, 1998) at the Lake Mills Care Center.
Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Sion Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills, with the Rev. Gary Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Sion Lutheran Cemetery, rural Lake Mills.
There will be no visitation. Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be given to the Sion Lutheran Church, in her memory.
Edna Esther Hansing was born Jan. 30, 1916, in Freeborn County, near Alden, Minn.
Edna is survived by her husband, Harold, of Lake Mills; two sons, Adrian Hansing, of Hampstead, N.C. and Curtis Hansing, of Marietta, Ga.; three grandsons; two sisters, Gertrude Erickson, of Lake Mills and Wauneita Brindel, of Albert Lea, Minn.
She was preceded in death by one son, parents, three sisters and one brother.

CHARLES CITY — Albert F. "Al" Hood, 76, of 906 Seventh Ave., and formerly of Fort Dodge, died Sunday (Nov. 29, 1998) at the Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City, following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John Catholic Church, Bancroft, with the Rev. Eugene Schumacher and the Rev. John Thomas officiating. Interment will be in the St. John Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 2:30 to 8 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Bancroft, with a 3 p.m. rosary and a 7:30 p.m. parish prayer service.
Tom was born on Sept. 14, 1906, in rural Seneca.
Survivors include a sister, Florence McGuire, of Bancroft.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one sister and two brothers.

GREENE — Funeral services for Theodore Brinkman, 92, of 23175 150th St., Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, at Wilmar, rural Greene, with the Rev. Norman Omodt officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, in Greene. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.
Theodore Brinkman was born July 29, 1906, in Dayton Township, Butler County, the son of Henry and Caroline (Koenig) Brinkman and died Monday (Nov. 30, 1998) at the Clarksville Community Nursing Home.
He was baptized on Sept. 23, 1906, and confirmed a member of St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church at Vilmar on April 3, 1921. He received his education in the rural Dayton Township Schools and started farming on the family farm as a young man.
He was united in marriage to Velma V. Tack on June 10, 1936, at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church at Vilmar. Theodore and Velma farmed their entire married life in Dayton Township until entering the nursing home in September of 1994.
Ted served as Dayton Township trustee for many years and was a member of the Creamery Board and Vilmar Church Council. His interests included playing cards and dominos, making latch hook rugs, and being a very good cook, but most of all, farming was his greatest love.
Living members include his daughter and son-in-law, Vae and Dan Gindt, of Omaha, Neb.; two sons and their wives, Galen and Jerrylyn Brinkman, and Dean and Kay Brinkman, all of Greene; nine grandchildren, Aaron and his wife, Beth Gindt, of Ames, Susan Gindt, of Omaha, Jill and her husband, Jeff Haugen, of Forest City; Ron Brinkman, of Waukon; Sara Brinkman, of Des Moines; Randy and his wife, Juliet Brinkman; Todd and his wife, Barb Brinkman, all of Greene; Angie and her husband, Jayme Sieren, of Keota; and Amy and her husband, Pat Williams, of Marshalltown; five great-grandchildren, Jacob Haugen, Jenna Rose Haugen, Peyton Williams, Tyler Brinkman and Alexander Theodore Gindt.
He was preceded in death by his wife on Jan. 21, 1996; two grandsons, Danny Jo Brinkman and Timothy Gindt; his parents; and three brothers, Henry, Fred and Harry Brinkman.

** Fergus E. Bohen
TUCSON, Ariz. — Fergus E. Bohen, who was born on Feb. 27, 1928, in Mason City, Iowa, died Friday (Nov. 27, 1998) in Tucson.
Fergus will be buried at a later date in Memorial Park Cemetery, next to his late wife, June.
Wolfery Peace Chappel, Tucson, is in charge of arrangements.
Fergus traveled the world with the U.S. Army and took pride in serving his country for more than 25 years. He moved to Tucson two years ago to be closer to his family, but always considered Mason City home.
Survived by daughters, Sara Richey (Larry Wren), Roberta Bohen and Elizabeth Rogers; grandchildren, Gary and Jeff Richey, Jennifer Corrales and Chris and Russell Rogers; great-grandaughter, Ashley Richey (all of Tucson); and brother, Earl Bohen, of Mason City; and nieces and nephews. |

** Beatrice Dyre
MASON CITY — Mrs. Viva (Beatrice) Dyre, 89, of 1615 Eighth St. S.W., died Tuesday (Dec. 1, 1998) at the Heritage Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 4, 1998, at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Sharon Betsworth officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 18, Mason City.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City.

Zada Lula Beatrice Sears was born July 5, 1909, the daughter of Clement and Emma (Stokes) Sears in a sod house in Hardesty, Okla. At the age of 4, her family moved to the Mason City area where Beatrice attended school
On Jan. 29, 1930, Beatrice was united in marriage to Viva Dyre in Mason City. The couple farmed for 58 years with 50 of those spent in the Cartersville area. In 1990 the couple moved to Mason City. In January of 1998, the couple celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary.
As a young adult, Beatrice joined the Methodist Church in Burchinal and later taught Sunday school there. She enjoyed spending her time baking, gardening and canning as many things as she could. Beatrice always liked to nurture her flowers, especially pink roses. She liked to quilt and sew and was a member of the Owen Township Sewing Circle. Beatrice was always ready to visit with friends and family. She loved to spend time being the family genealogist.
Beatrice was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Those thankful for having shared Beatrice's life include her husband, Viva, of Mason City; three daughters, Audrey and her husband, Duane Huff, of Mason City; Gloria and her husband, Gary George, of Northwood; and Janice Rippen, of Nora Springs; one son, James and his wife, Colleen Dyre, of Clear Lake; two brothers, Tilman and his wife, Lucille Sears, of Clear Lake; and Guymon Sears, of Mason City; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson; and several cousins.
Beatrice was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Roger; two sisters, Lovelle Huber and Opal Sears; two brothers, T.L. Sears and Gurney Sears; two granddaughters; and two great-grandsons.
** Terri J. (Tessman) Duncan
GARNER — Terri Jean (Tessman) Duncan, 39, of Albuquerque, N.M., formerly of Garner, died Sunday (Nov. 1, 1998) at Presbyterian Pickard Convalescent Center in Albuquerque, from complications of multiple sclerosis.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998, at the United Methodist Church, Garner, with the Rev. Kay Hooper officiating.
Cataldo Funeral Home, 760 Center Ave., Garner, is in charge of arrangements.
Terri was born Aug. 28, 1959, at Cedar Rapids, the daughter of John and Jean (Turner) Tessman. She attended school at Ventura where she graduated from high school in 1977.
She enlisted in the U.S. Navy and received her training in Florida, Tennessee and San Diego. She was stationed at several bases as an air traffic controller with her last assignment being at Midway Island.
On Oct. 27, 1984, she was married to Kevin L. Duncan at the United Methodist Church in Garner. She enjoyed life at its fullest for as long as she could. She lived in Alaska, the Seattle, Wash., area, Iowa and New Mexico. She liked to be outside doing outdoors activities such as camping, fishing, swimming, playing with her pets and helping her dad.
She was active in 4-H and music groups in school. She could play any instrument she picked up. She played the accordion and was in a band in Bellingham, Wash., where she played the base guitar.

MANLY — Margaret Mary Reindl, 92, of Manly, died Tuesday (Dec. 1, 1998) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.
A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly, with the Rev. Thomas McAndrew officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Manly.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, with a public Scripture/rosary service at 7 p.m.
Margaret Mary Reindl was born on Sept. 23, 1906, in Manly, in Worth County, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Hortense (O'Connor) Hovell. She attended and received her education in the Bethlehem Academy. After completing her schooling, she helped her family on the family farm.
She was united in marriage to Leonard Reindl on Oct. 15, 1928, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly. He preceded her in death on Oct. 12, 1985.
After their marriage, they lived in Manly where she helped her husband at the Husky Western Oil Station which they owned and operated for several years.
She enjoyed cooking, playing cards, gardening, knitting, ceramics, and doing seamstress work, but her great love and enjoyment was taking care of her family and friends.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly, ACCW at the church, ladies card club in Manly and was a former member of the Manly Garden Club.
Left to cherish her memory is a daughter, Mary Ellen Karlan and her husband, Ralph, of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Juanita Richman and her husband, Lynn, of Iowa City; Charley Karlan and his wife, Nadine, of Cedar Rapids; Kevin Karlan and his wife, Diane, of Central City; Dennis Karlan and his wife, Julie, of Cedar Rapids; and Steve Karlan and his wife, Jodi, of Tucson, Ariz.; 10 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews as well as other relatives and friends.
Besides her husband, Leonard Reindl, who died on Oct. 12, 1985, she was also preceded in death by an infant son, Charles Reindl; a sister who died in infancy and two brothers, Maurice and Joe Hovell.

GARNER — Edith Pollock, 88, of Garner, died Wednesday (Dec. 2, 1998) at Prairie View Apartments.
Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the United Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Daniel Bloesch officiating. Private graveside services will be held Saturday morning at Concord Township Cemetery.

Edith Ruth Pollock was born May 14, 1910, at Syracuse, Ind., the daughter of Conrad J. and Jennie (Carlson) Quackenbush. The family settled in Creston, Iowa, where she graduated from Creston High School and Junior College.
She graduated from Parsons College at Fairfield and did graduate work at the University of Iowa, Iowa State Teacher's College at Cedar Falls and at Fort Collins, Colo. She taught high school English in Cincinnati, Iowa, Hayfield and at Garner. Later she was the school librarian at Garner High School.
She was united in marriage to Clarke Pollock at the United Presbyterian Church in Garner on June 1, 1938. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 1998 with a family dinner.
She and Clarke traveled often, visiting Africa, the Holy Land and Greece and many places in America. She spent three weeks traveling in Europe. Her hobbies included reading, crossword puzzles and traveling.
She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School and held several offices in the U.P.W. Association. She also belonged to the Elzevir Sorority at Parsons College, was a charter member of the Garner chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, a long time member of the Garner Recital Club and Homemakers Hobby Club and was a Rotary Ann for many years.
She is survived by her husband, Clarke, of Garner; two children, Carolyn Weinheimer and her husband, William, of Hollister, Calif. and Scott Pollock and his wife, Carol, of Tampa, Fla.; four grandchildren, Lara Weinheimer-Munro, Amy Weinheimer, Michael Pollock and Susan Pollock; a sister, Betty Stough, of Carol Stream, Ill.; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Quackenbush, of Walden, N.Y. and Ethel Quackenbush, of Jonesboro, Ark.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Charles and Robert Quackenbush.

LAKE MILLS — Lloyd Earl Mowers, 75, a former resident of Mason City, Iowa, died Wednesday morning (Nov. 25, 1998) at his home in San Antonio, Texas, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Salem Lutheran Church, Lake Mills. Interment will be in Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.

Lloyd Earl Mowers was born in Northwood, Iowa, on Jan. 7, 1923, to Lloyd and Anna Mowers. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War.
In 1949, he graduated from Drake University College of Pharmacy. He worked in Mason City at the Medical Arts Pharmacy for many years before becoming manager and pharmacist at Key Rexall Drug.
Later he and his wife Helen settled in Lake Mills, Iowa, where he owned and operated Earl's Drug for 25 years until retiring and moving to San Antonio, Texas. There he enjoyed golfing, woodworking and tooling around town in his truck.
He touched many lives wherever he has lived with his generous spirit and willingness to help anyone who asked. He was known to many children as "Grandpa Toys" because of all the wonderful wooden toys he made.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Helen; son, Gregory and daughter-in-law, Darlene, of Mesa, Ariz.; daughter, Kathy and son-in-law, Dr. Bernard T. Swift Jr., of San Antonio, Texas; grandchildren, Nicholas Mowers; Brandon and Nicole Swift; brother, Dale Mowers, of Albert Lea, Minn.; and sister, Evelyn Cox, of Wabasha, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Anna Mowers; and a sister, Ruth Mowers.

Bess F. Martinson was born March 18, 1915, at Ada, Minn., the daughter of Frank and Sarah Conzemius. She graduated from high school in Kensett.
On Nov. 18, 1938, she was united in marriage to Carl Eldon Martinson in Lake Mills.
Bess was employed as a nurse for several years at the Americana Nursing Home, Mason City.
She loved spending time with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed growing flowers in her garden, playing cards with friends and in later years, playing bingo at the senior center.
Those left to cherish her memory are her two children, Linda Selig and her husband, Macolm, of Silver Thorn, Colo. and Jim Martinson and his wife, Cheryl, of Mason City; four grandchildren, Jeff Selig, of Chicago, Ill. and Jerry Selig, of Fort Collins, Colo.; and Ryan and Corey Martinson, both of Mason City.

Ruth Edith Ella Johnson was born Aug. 5, 1910, near Otranto, in Mitchell County, the daughter of John and Bertha (Stangohr) Von Bergan. She was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church, in St. Ansgar. Ruth graduated from Otranto High School in 1928.
Ruth married Alvin Johnson on Oct. 14, 1930, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They farmed for 50 years on a farm north of Orchard. After the death of her husband, Alvin, in 1983, she moved to Osage.
She is survived by one daughter, Doris Condon and her husband, Richard, of Chandler, Ariz.; two granddaughters, Doreen Wagner and her husband, Bill, and their children, Megan, Katie, Andie and Julie, of Valley Center, Calif.; and Annette Miller and children, Travis and Beth, of Olympia, Wash.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alvin; two brothers; and two sisters.

WHITEFISH, Mont. — Cindy White Cameron, 38, died in a tragic vehicle accident near Clearwater Junction on Sunday (Nov. 29, 1998) .
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Christ Lutheran Church, Whitefish, Mont. A celebration of her life will follow.

Cindy was born April 28, 1960 in Butte, Mont. She attended grade school in Butte and Miles City, Mont., and graduated from Custer County High School in Miles City in 1978.
She graduated from St. Benedict College in St. Joseph, Minn. She earned a degree in elementary education.
She worked as a ski instructor at the Big Mountain and Big Sky resorts, as a Glacier National Park crew worker from 1986-1991 and had taught at Ruder Elementary School in Columbia Falls from 1991 until the time of her death.
She moved to Whitefish in 1983. She married Chuck Cameron, of Whitefish, on Aug. 20, 1994. They have a son, Daniel, who is 22 months old.
She is survived by her husband and son; her parents, Myles and Regina White, of Miles City; brothers, Charles, of Great Falls, Mont., Jim of Eugene, Ore.; Mark, of Helena; sisters, Mary Karen Marek, of Billings, Mont.; Joyce Tierney, of Eugene, Ore.; two nieces, Nicole Marek and Lisa Tierney; four nephews, Rob and Matt Tierney; and Aaron and Jon White; her brother-in-law, Bob Cameron; and her mother-in-law, Anne Cameron, both of Mason City, Iowa and many, many friends.

J. was born March 19, 1934, in Dougherty, the son of Donald Ross "Buck" and Mary (Ryan) Pedelty. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1952 and continued his education at Iowa State University, in Ames. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1955-57.
J. worked throughout his life as a partner in farming, cattle feeding and livestock marketing with the Pedelty Brothers. They operated the Clear Lake Auction Co., Farmers Auction Market in Eldora and in later years, the North Iowa Livestock Exchange in Garner.
J. is survived by his wife, Jo Pedelty, of Clear Lake; three children, Kelley Stumme and her husband, Alan; Adam Pedelty and Tanya; and H.J. Pedelty; three grandchildren, Bailey J. CRESTON — Lee W. "Bill" Huff, 68, of 310 N. Vine St., died Nov. 23, 1998, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines.
Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home, 809 W. Montgomery St., Creston. The Rev. Elliott Butler III officiated with burial in Evergreen Cemetery at Jerusalem Church, with military rites conducted by the VFW Post No. 1797.
Visitation was held on Friday, Nov. 27 at the Coen-Beaty Funeral Home.

Mr. Huff was born Aug. 3, 1930, in Dodge City, Neb., to Lee Ollie and Lillian Edith (Stewart) Huff.
On April 21, 1962, he married Phyllis Ann Parkins at the Jerusalem Church. He owned and operated Huff Bakery from 1959 to 1989 and was employed by Hy-Vee Bakery.
He was raised in the Mason City area and moved to Creston in 1959. He was a member of the Jerusalem Church and a lifetime member of the VFW. He served in the U.S. Army from 1949-52.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Huff, of Creston; a son, Mark Huff and his wife, Brenda, of Creston; a daughter, Teresa Maeder and her husband, Roy, of Creston; five brothers, Calvin Huff, Norman Huff, and John Huff and his wife, Judy, all of Mason City; Clifford Huff and his wife, June, of Hampton, and David Huff and his wife, Cecilia, of Fallon, Nev.; two sisters, Vivian Groom, of Joplin, Mo., and Eileen Jackson; a sister-in-law, Edna Huff, of Sheffield; and four grandchildren.

** Walter A. Wagner
GRAFTON — Walter A. Wagner, 97, of Grafton, died Thursday (Dec. 3, 1998) at the Good Samaritan Center, in St. Ansgar.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton, with the Rev. Rose Marie Nack officiating. Burial will be in the Grafton Cemetery, Grafton.
He was born on Jan. 18, 1901, on his family’s farm, east of Grafton, and was a life long member of that community until he entered the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center a year ago. He was the seventh of eight children born to German immigrant parents, August and Ernstine (Deunow) Wagner.
Walter was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Grafton. He was educated in the Grafton Public School system and attended Mankato Business College in Minnesota.
He was a journeyman carpenter employed by Herman Diedrich of the St. Ansgar area. In 1927, he purchased the Grafton Meat Market.
Walter married Verna Hasse on Aug. 12, 1928. The couple operated the meat market until selling it in 1948. During World War II, Walter also became employed by the Standard Oil Company as the regional representative for their bulk delivery service. He retired in 1966.
He was a busy man throughout his life, even during his retirement years. At various times, he served on the local school board, held the position of secretary and treasurer of the Grafton Telephone Co., worked on the Heritage Depot restoration and the 1978 Grafton Centennial Celebration, assisted for many years during Turkey Day activities and was in general, a productive and interested member of the community. In retirement, he enjoyed a long association with the North Iowa Area Agency on Aging. He was proud of his German heritage and was fluent in the language.
He was an avid sportsman with an abiding concern for conservation. His favorite sports were hunting pheasants and fishing for small mouth bass. He was good at both.
He is survived by his two sons, Jim, of Montana and Tom, of Grafton; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Dora Christians, of St. Ansgar.
Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Vera; his parents; three brothers; three sisters; a daughter-in-law, and a great-granddaughter.

She married Nels O. Ouverson on Sept. 14, 1931, in Minnesota. He died in January 1955.
Nellie was married to Ben A. Loats on Feb. 14, 1959, in Mason City. He died in January 1989.
She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and former circle member. She was a member of the Universal Study Club.
Survivors include daughters, Ardis Bromley, of Mason City, and Donna Heivilin, of Arlington, Va.; son, Mark Ouverson and his wife, Bonnie, of Palm Harbor, Fla.; stepdaughter, Marion Riggins and her husband, James, of Eldora; stepsons, Fred Loats, of Belmond; Ken Loats, and wife, Martha, of Granville, Ohio; and Luverne "Bill" Ouverson, of Mason City; stepson-in-law, Edward Anderson, of Rio Verde, Ariz.; brother, John Humphrey and his wife, Helen, of Garner; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; and 11 stepgreat-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by parents, two husbands, one brother, two sisters, and one stepgrandson.

BELMOND — Kathleen Mae Draper, 47, of Goleta, Calif., formerly of Belmond and born in Belmond on March 17, 1951, to Valva and Gerald Draper, was killed by a train on Nov. 22, 1998, in Goleta, Calif.
Kathy is survived by a son, Troy, of Goleta, Calif.; mother, Valva, of Las Vegas; father, Gerald, of Mason City; brother, Larry Draper, of Salt Lake City; sisters, Linda Whipple, of Salt Lake City; and Judy Evangelisti, of Woodland Hills, Calif.; and cousins, aunts, and uncles.
She was preceded in death by brother, Timothy; and sister, Nancy.
Services were held in Goleta, Calif., and graveside services were held at 1 p.m. on Dec. 2, 1998, in Belmond. |
