** Patrick A. Janssen
MASON CITY Funeral services for Patrick A. Janssen, 47, of 617 11th St. N.E., Mason City, formerly of Winterset, will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998, at the First Presbyterian Church, in Greene, with the Rev. Galen E. Smith and the Rev. John Schaull officiating. Burial will be in the Allison Cemetery.
There will be no visitation. Reids Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First, Greene, is in charge of arrangements.
Patrick A. Janssen was born Sept. 21, 1951, at the Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City, a son of Bert and Ila Lorraine (Anderson) Janssen; and died Thursday (Dec. 10, 1998) at his sisters home in Mason City.
He was baptized on March 16, 1955, and confirmed a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greene on March 22, 1964.
He received his education at the Plainfield Public Schools, graduating in 1969. He received a bachelors degree from Westmar College at LeMars in 1973 and masters degree from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls in 1980. He continued to further his education at Iowa State University in Ames.
His first teaching position was at Twin Rivers School District at Bode, and he later taught at Benton Community Schools in Van Horn. Since 1986, he has been the industrial technology instructor at Winterset Community Schools. During his time he was junior high football and wrestling coach
Due to his health, he was forced to leave his teaching position on April 9, 1998.
Throughout his teaching career he received many recognitions and awards as an educator which includes: Program of the Year Award by the Iowa Industrial Technology Association, of which he was president of that organization in 1994-1995. He was also named Winterset Coach of the Year.
He was a member of the Iowa State Teachers Association, Local Teachers Association, and Des Moines Woodworkers Club. Pats interests including woodworking, pheasant and deer hunting, and caring for his German Shepherd named Max..
He will be greatly missed by his two sisters, Mary Jane Baldwin, of Denver and Jean Janssen, of Mason City; his brother, Dan and his wife, Mary Janssen, of Chariton; seven nieces and nephews; Theresa Gobel, Bradley Baldwin, Nicolle Baldwin, Rebecca Baldwin, Bill Anderson, Stacey Janssen, and Megan Janssen.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Dennis, who died in infancy.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Patrick A. Janssen Memorial Fund in care of the family.
** Magdalena H. Guldberg
HAMPTON Magdalena Hulda Guldberg, 88, of Hampton, died Thursday (Dec. 10, 1998) at the Franklin General Hospital, Hampton.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Immanuel United Christ of Christ, in Latimer, with the Rev. Jeff Long officiating. Burial will be in the Marion Center Cemetery, rural Latimer.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton.
Magdalena Guldberg was born July 7, 1910, at Primrose.
Survivors include one sister, Dorothy Schmidt, of Jasper, Minn.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, one stepdaughter, and one stepgrandson.
** Merrill E. Albers
BUFFALO CENTER Merrill E. Albers, 69, of Buffalo Center, died Thursday (Dec. 10, 1998) at the Titonka Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Buffalo Center, with the Rev. Jim Cherry officiating. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery, Buffalo Center.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. Saturday at the Winter Funeral Home, Buffalo Center.
Merrill E. Albers was born March 3, 1929, at Buffalo Center.
Survivors include his daughters, Lorie Bierle, of Buffalo Center; and LeAnn Wempen, of LuVerne; four grandchildren; four brothers, Edwin, of Marshalltown, Gerald, of Janesville, Wis., Donald, of Broomfield, Colo.; and Dennis, of Albia; and two sisters, Arlene Field, of Ankeny and Gladys Sheldon, of Clear Lake.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one sister, and one granddaughter.
** Ruth L. Smith
LA CROSSE, Wis. Ruth L. Smith, 76, of La Crosse, formerly of Meservey, Iowa, died Wednesday (Dec. 9, 1998) at the Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. today at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home, La Crosse, with the Rev. Roger Hjelle officiating.
Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. until time of services.
Funeral services will also be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998, at the First Reformed Church, in Meservey, with the Rev. Rodney Meester officiating. Burial will be in the Meservey Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 1:30 p.m. Saturday until time of services on Saturday at the church.
She was born on the family farm in Alexander, Iowa, to Dan R. and Tena (Groen) Schmidt. Ruth grew up on a farm between Meservey and Alexander.
She married Onno J. Suntken in June of 1940 and they had four children. Ruth moved to La Crosse in 1966.
She married Harold Smith in September of 1967. She lived in La Crosse until the time of her death.
She enjoyed gardening, sewing and family gatherings.
Ruth is survived by her husband, Harold; a daughter, Marlys Pruisman and her husband, Dean, of Mason City, Iowa; a son, Dennis L. Suntken and his wife, Sharon, of La Crosse; a son, Delbert Suntken and his wife, Kay, of Taylorsville, Ky.; and a daughter, Audrey Oreskovich and her husband, Randy, of La Crosse; eight grandchildren, Marilyn Pruisman, Lyle Pruisman, Dan Pruisman, Sara Bonam, Michael Bonam, Lynda Gayle Shelburne, Sherry Taylor and Brandon Oreskovich; and 16 great-grandchildren.
In addition, she is survived by three stepdaughters, Carol Jean (Gary) Albrecht, of Rushford, Minn., Sharon (John) Evanhoff, of Reno, Nev., Kathy (Leonard) Larson, of Houston, Minn.; nine stepgrandchildren; three sisters, Phyllis (Herman) Statlander, of Meservey, Iowa, Wilma (Roman) Johnson, of Alexander and Shirley (Jack) Faaborg, of Meservey; two sisters-in-law, Caroline Schmidt and Elaine Schmidt, both of Belmond; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Onno; two brothers, Leonard and Clarence; and an infant sister, Bernice; and a stepson and his wife, Gary and Sharon Smith.
** Earl D. Hearity
MASON CITY Earl D. Hearity, 82, of 712 13th St. S.E., Mason City, died Wednesday (Dec. 8, 1998) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
His body was cremated. There will be no visitation.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Michael Schueller, of St. Joseph Catholic Church officiating.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of North Iowa, in memory of Earl D. Hearity.
Earl D. Hearity was born Nov. 21, 1916, in Emmetsburg, son of Peter J. and Catherine (Walsh) Hearity. He married Buena M. Niewald on June 2, 1944, in Jamica, N.Y.
Earl grew up in Emmetsburg and graduated from St. Joseph High School, Mason City, in 1936. He served in the Navy during World War II and was stationed in the Pacific. He worked for the federal government as a USDA meat inspector for 30 years until retiring in 1977. He enjoyed to hunt and fish.
Earl was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Disabled American Veterans, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NAFRE).
Survivors include his wife, Buena Hearity, Mason City; one son, Joseph Hearity, of Ottumwa, Iowa; one grandson, Brian Hearity, of Ottumwa; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Melvin and Joseph Hearity; and two sisters, Peterine Hodak and Edna Ladwig.
** Lewis E. Koepke
FOREST CITY Lewis E. Koepke, 59, of 235 A East C Street, died Wednesday (Dec. 9, 1998) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
His body was cremated. There will be no visitation.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. John Ayers, chaplain of Hospice of North Iowa, officiating. Lewis remains will be taken to his mountain in Arkansas the first week of July, 1999.
Lewis E. Koepke was born on Aug. 13, 1939, in Texarkana, Ark., the son of Louis Clark and Zella Arti (Burnett) Koepke.
Lewis loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved to go camping.
For the last three months, he resided at the Good Samaritan Health Care Center, Forest City.
Those left to cherish his memory are four children, James Koepke and his wife, Claudine, of Forest City; Rusty Koepke, of Houston; Cyndi Helton, of Texarkana, Ark.; and Kimberly Lopez and her husband, Rob, of Houston; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ruth Parks and her husband, Walter N., of Little Rock, Ark., Martha Dean and her husband, Gay, of Texarkana, Texas; one brother, Lee Koepke and his wife, of Queen City, Texas; and one brother-in-law, Louis Davis, of Houston; several nieces, nephews and friends; and one special friend, Cathy King.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father and one sister, Mary Davis.
** Melville William 'Bud' Hughes
CLEAR LAKE Melville William "Bud" Hughes, 84, a lifetime resident of Clear Lake, died of natural causes Wednesday (Dec. 9, 1998).
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the First Congregational Church, 205 W. 10th Ave. North, with the Rev. Thomas Healey officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St.
Memorials may be made to the First Congregational Church Endowment Fund.
Bud was born in Clear Lake on April 7, 1914, son of Melville P. and Celia "Clack" Hughes, and dedicated his life to family and service to the community and church. Bud's grandparents settled in Clear Lake in the mid-1800s.
Bud was active in the Boy Scouts. He earned Eagle Scout in 1930; the Silver Beaver Scouter's Key, and the Explorer Silver Award in 1958; and the Order of the Arrow Vigil Honor in 1961. Bud served as first scoutmaster for Troop 199 at Opportunity Village in 1981. His oldest scout was 70.
Bud attended the First Congregational Church founded by his great-grandfather, Elder Wood, was a member of the boards of trustees and deacons for many years. He gave the keynote address at the third annual meeting of the National Association of Congregational-Christian Churches in Hartford, Conn.
Bud was an active business man and supporter of Clear Lake his entire life.
He served on the School Board from 1947 to 1953, was honored as Clear Lake's Man of the Year in 1951 for serving as general chairman of the Clear Lake Centennial, and was a long-time member of the Clear Lake Noon Lions Club, where he received the Melvin Jones Award, the highest award given in the Lions organization.
In 1984, Bud was honored with the Iowa Governor's Volunteer Award.
Bud married Lois Padelford in 1939.
Survivors include four sons, Melville P. "Duke" Hughes and his wife, RoseMarie, of Novato, Calif., Justin R. Hughes and his wife, Joyce, of Fredricksburg, Va., Alan D. Hughes and his wife, Salimah Majeed, of Minneapolis, and Craig B. Hughes and his wife, Barbara, of San Diego; one brother, Dick Hughes and his wife, Joan, of Clear Lake; four sisters, Mary Ann Hughes of Clear Lake, Elizabeth Morrissey of Edina, Minn., Margaret Doudna of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Katherine Short of Clear Lake; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and countless children of all ages touched by his tireless devotion to service.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Lois in 1989.
Bud has made the world kinder through example and compassion.
** Wayne W. Gazaway Sr.
CLEAR LAKE Wayne W. Gazaway Sr., 75, of 5851 South Shore Drive, died Sunday (Dec. 6, 1998) at his home.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Faith Assembly of God, Marshalltown, with the Rev. Bruce Klapp officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens, Marshalltown.
Visitation was held Tuesday at the Estel Perrin Avey Funeral Home, 212 East State St., Marshalltown.
Wayne W. Gazaway Sr. was born in Marshalltown on June 26, 1923.
He is survived by his wife, Bonita; seven children, the Rev. Wayne "Bill" Gazaway Jr., Maitland, Mo., Calvin Gazaway, Farmington, Mo., Daniel L. Gazaway, Wapello, Mark Gazaway, Overland Park, Kan., Carrie Gazaway, Roeland Park, Kan., David Gazaway, Port Arthur, Texas, and Philip Gazaway, Silsbee, Texas; 18 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Dorothy Chatham, Pleasant Hill.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three children, two brothers and one sister. |

** Beverly Alderman
CHARLES CITY Beverly Alderman, 53, of 85 Cedar Terrace N., died Friday (Dec. 11, 1998) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with Monsignor Stanley J. Hayek officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., with the St. Bernadette Circle reciting the rosary at 3 p.m. and a vigil Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue an hour prior to services on Tuesday at the church.
Beverly Ann Alderman was born March 7, 1945, at South Hampton, Long Island, N.Y.
Survivors include her husband, Douglas, of Charles City; and one sister, Georgianna Lutz, of Charles City.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

GREENE Dorothy Ross, 78, of 602 N. Bluff, Greene, died Friday (Dec. 11, 1998) at the Dumont Care Center, Dumont.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Greene, with Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Greene.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Reid's Funeral Chapel, Greene, with a 7:30 p.m. Scriptural wake service followed by a Rosary service.

Merle Kubicek was born on Sept. 13, 1911, in Riceville.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda Harvey, of Champaign, Ill., and Carol Erickson, of Indianapolis; and four grandchildren.

OSAGE Harold H. Joyal, 93, of Osage, died Friday (Dec. 11, 1998) at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Harold H. Joyal was born April 19, 1905, in Bloomer, Wis.
Survivors include a daughter, Norma Kuykendall, of Floyd; one son, Leonard Joyal, of Osage; one sister, Alice Rysted, of Ozark, Mo.; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, and two sisters.
** Elsie Dieterich
OSAGE Elsie Dieterich, 95, of Osage, died Friday (Dec. 11, 1998) at the Faith Lutheran Home, Osage.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, at St. Johns Lutheran Church, south of Osage in East Cedar Township, with the Rev. Chris F. Gugel officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Champion Funeral Home, 702 State St., Osage, and one hour before services on Monday at the church.
Elsie Dieterich was born Oct. 5, 1903, in St. Ansgar, the daughter of Albert and Helena (Erdmann) Hollatz.
Elsie was baptized Nov. 8, 1903, at St. Johns Lutheran Church, in Rock Township, Mitchell County and confirmed on May 25, 1919, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar.
Elsie married Alvin Dieterich on June 3, 1925, at St. Johns Lutheran Church in East Cedar Township, Mitchell County. Two children were born to this union, a daughter, Dorothy Troge, who passed away in 1977, and a daughter, Bernice Muller, who passed away in 1986. Elsie and Alvin farmed near Rudd. Alvin passed away in 1957.
Those surviving Elsie include, two granddaughters, Kristine Muller Cassel, of Mason City and Janet Muller Boll and her husband, Joe, of Toledo; a brother, Ortwin Hollatz, of Osage; and two sons-in-law, Loren Muller, of Osage and Gene Troge, of Osage.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Alvin in 1957; two daughters, Dorothy and Bernice; four brothers, Laurence Hollatz, Arthur Hollatz, Oscar Hollatz and Earl Hollatz; and four sisters, Esther Haupt, Leona Thorson, Edna Muller, and Laura Muller. |

MASON CITY G. Louise Hawley, 90, formerly of 501 S. Tennessee Place, died Saturday (Dec. 12, 1998) at Good Shepherd Care Center, Mason City.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City.
** Dorothy Louise Hoit
CLEAR LAKE Dorothy Louise Hoit, 89, formerly of Columbus, Neb., died Saturday (Dec. 12, 1998) at the Manly Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Clear Lake Cemetery with the Rev. Fred Lewis of the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, officiating.
All arranges were completed at Ward Van Slyke Colonial Funeral Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake.
The family of Dorothy Louise Hoit has requested that memorial contributions be directed to the Alzheimer's Foundation in her memory.
Dorothy Louise Hoit was born on Sept. 23, 1909, in southern Iowa and was raised in Clear Lake. Dorothy was adopted at an early age by Jesse Cooper and Anna (Lottie) Davenport and was blessed with a large number of brothers and sisters.
She was united in marriage to Roy Vernon Hoit on Jan. 4, 1930, in Clear Lake. He preceded her in death on April 26, 1978.
Dorothy was raised a Methodist and was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake.
Left to cherish her memory is a daughter, Anna Craig and her husband, Rikk, of Dunnellon, Fla.; a son, Ronald Hoit and his wife, Doris, of Mason City; seven grandchildren, Susan, Linda, Ellen, David, JoAnn, Tom, and Robert; a number of great-grandchildren and a couple of great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Virginia Sanford, of Aurora, Colo.; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and brothers and sisters.

Dorothy Margaret Esser was born April 13, 1920, in rural Cartersville, Cerro Gordo County.
Living family members include her husband, Clifford, of Greene; two daughters, Nancy Boehmer, Waterloo, and Susan Rath, Tyler, Texas; four sons, Gene Ross, Greene, Gary Ross, Denver, Iowa, Bob Ross, Greene, and Dennis Ross, Greene; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Leone Coonradt, Fairfield Bay, Ark., Rose Wihlm, Rockford, Arlene Kirchoff, Rockwell, and Betty Larson, Dougherty.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, one brother and three half-brothers.
** Keith Coe
NORA SPRINGS Keith Coe, 79, of 20076 250th St. died Saturday (Dec. 12, 1998) at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, Minn.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home.
** Lawrence J. Proulx
LAKE MILLS Lawrence J. Proulx, 88, of 313 N. Lake Street, died Saturday (Dec. 12, 1998) at Naeve Hospital, Albert Lea, Minn.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Salem Lutheran Church Chapel, Lake Mills.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 209 N. Washington, Lake Mills, and will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.
** Ruth Allo
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. Ruth Allo, 75, died Wednesday (Dec. 9, 1998).
Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 11, 1998, at St. Bernadine's Catholic Church. Burial was in the Military Cemetery in Riverside, Calif.
Memorials may be directed to the local Cancer Society in memory of Ruth Allo. Acknowledgments and cards may be sent to 25593 17th St., San Bernardino, CA 92404.
Ruth was married to Joseph Allo. Many will remember Joe as a principal at Harding School for 10 years and McKinley School for one year.
Ruth served in the Navy during World War II and was a licensed LPN for 20 years.
She returned to California with her family in 1960.
The Allos referred to Iowa as "God's Country" and returned every year except for one to spend time with family and friends.
Ruth will be sadly missed by her husband, Joe; two sons, Jim and Rich; two daughters, Kathy and Teresa and their families in addition to a host of relatives and friends.
** Barbara K. Wood
DONNA, Texas Barbara K. Wood, 50, formerly of Clear Lake, died Wednesday (Dec. 9, 1998) at home in Donna, Texas, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Her body was donated to the University of Texas for medical research.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at The Evangelical Free Church, Britt, with the Rev. William Culbertson officiating.
Barbara was born April 29, 1948, in Melrose City, Minn., to Delbert and Emilie (Bosshardt) Gamradt. She graduated salutatorian of her class from Sauk Centre schools in 1966. She received her bachelor of arts degree and graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Minnesota in Morris in 1970.
She was united in marriage to Ralph Pohlmann Sept. 1, 1970. They had two children, Lori and Michael. They lived in the Klemme area for 10 years; during this time Barbara was a substitute teacher and also a hostess at the Prairie View Apartments in Garner.
Barbara was an active member of the Klemme American Legion Auxilliary and also taught Sunday school and was a member of The United Methodist Church of Klemme.
On Nov. 28, 1985, she was united in ;marriage to Stephen Wood. While Stephen was in the Navy, they were stationed in Charleston, S. C. and Newport, R. I.
Barbara worked as office manager of The Sakonnet Times newspaper in Portsmouth, R.I. They retired in 1992 and traveled in their recreational vehicle to Montana and down to Louisiana and south Texas in the winters. They spent summers in Clear Lake and Sheffield.
Her hobbies were reading, writing poetry, gardening, cooking, stamp collecting, crocheting and cross-stitching. Her favorite things to do were watch birds and NASCAR races (Dale Earnhardt's No. 1 fan). She enjoyed fishing and being around nature, picking shells up off the beach and listening to the birds sing.
She will be sadly missed by her husband, Stephen, of Donna, Texas; her daughter, Lori and her husband, Dennis Ostercamp, of Britt; her son, Michael, of Tiverton, Mass.; stepchildren, Doug and Debbie Wood; her parents, Delbert and Emilie Gamradt, of Sauk Centre, Minn.; her mother -in-law and father-in-law, Leo and Mary Wood, of Garner; her sister, Cheryl and her husband, Vic Blasing, of Motley, Minn.; her brother, Larry Gamradt, his wife, Jeanne, and their children,Kevin,Karen, Kimberly and Karla; her brother, Richard Gamradt, of Sioux Falls, S. D.; and many friends and her two cats.
Barbara was preceded in death by her grandparents.

Donald Clifford Abrams was born on March 2, 1913, in Renville, Minn., the son of Otto and Mattie (Bruns) Abrams. He received his education in the Climax, Minn., school system. After completing his schooling, he helped his mother on the farm in Climax, Minn., moving to Fertile in 1936.
He was united in marriage to Marie Berberich on May 10, 1938, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mason City. After their marriage they moved to rural Northwood in 1940, where he farmed until retiring from farming in 1962.
In 1954 he started Abrams Drainage in Northwood and was in business until retiring in 1974.
He loved the outdoors, gardening, flowers, and traveling, but his great love and enjoyment was his family and friends.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly since 1940.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Marie Abrams , Northwood; one son, Kenneth Abrams, Northwood; two daughters, Judy Davis and her husband, Steve, Apple Valley, Minn., and Jane Schroeder and her husband, Jim, Dubuque; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Spence Abrams and his wife, Vera, Clear Lake, Frank Abrams and his wife, Delma, Yakima, Wash., and Melvin Abrams and his wife, Ruth, Mason City; two sisters, Margaret Pendzich, Ixonia, Wis., and Arlene Noyes, Erskine, Minn.;a daughter-in-law, Barb Abrams, of Northwood; and other relatives and friends.

Margaret was born Oct. 6, 1898, on the family farm in Howard County, near Elma, the daughter of Nicholas and Margaret (Buckley) Riley. Her early education was in the community schools.
She then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls where she graduated from a special rural teachers course. She began her teaching career at the Mt. Pleasant rural school in East Lincoln Township, Mitchell County. Later she returned to school and received her bachelor of arts degree from Upper Iowa University, Fayette.
In 1923 she was united in marriage to Clarence A. Ramsay of Otranto. They were married in St. Patrick's Catholic Church at St. Cecelia, near Elma. To this union were born three children, Marie, who died in infancy, and Paul and Joseph, who also preceded her in death.
She returned to teaching and taught in Carpenter, St. Ansgar and Riceville. She held life memberships in the Iowa State Education Association and in the American Legion Auxiliary. She was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Sacred Heart Guild, and helped organize The Volunteer Group.
Margaret is survived by two sisters-in-law, Florence Ramsay Smith, West Branch, and Deola Ramsay Wryn, Glendale, Calif., and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence; an infant daughter, Marie; and two sons, Paul and Joseph.

Dorothy Margaret Esser was born April 13, 1920, in rural Cartersville, Cerro Gordo County, a daughter of William and Lena (Backer) Esser. She received her education in the rural schools near Cartersville.
As a young lady she began working at a restaurant in Iowa Falls. This is where she met Clifford Eugene Ross, and they were united in marriage on Aug. 3, 1942, at the Catholic church in Cartersville.
Shortly thereafter Cliff entered the United States Armed Forces and Dorothy accompanied him stateside. When Cliff was shipped overseas, she returned to Rockford to live with her parents. Following Cliff's discharge in 1947, they lived in Rockford for a short time and then moved to Greene.
After Dorothy raised her six children, she helped Cliff at their business, Ross Plumbing and Heating, in Greene.
Dorothy's interests included dancing, gambling at Tama, crocheting and making quilts and afghans for the grandchildren. She was considered a good cook, always preparing meals for large family dinners and making rolls and pies.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Greene.
Living family members include her loving husband of 50 years, Clifford, of Greene; two daughters, Nancy and her husband, David Boehmer, Waterloo, and Susan Rath, of Tyler, Texas; four sons and their spouses, Gene and Sandy Ross, Greene, Gary and Sally Ross, Denver, Iowa, Bob Ross, Greene, and Dennis and Mary Jane Ross, Greene; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; four sisters and their spouses, Leone and Rowland Coonradt, Fairfield Bay, Ark., Rose and Alphonse Wihlm, Rockford, Arlene and Clarence Kirchoff, Rockwell, and Betty and Wayne Larson, Dougherty.

Mildred Marie Stoudek was born March 27, 1914, in Chicago, the daughter of Frank and Marie (Malkus) Stoudek and died Saturday (Dec. 12, 1998) at the Eleventh Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.
She received her first Holy Communion on May 30, 1926, at SS. Cyril and Methodius Church in Chicago and received her education at St. Procopius Commercial High School in Chicago, graduating in 1935. She then became employed for Kleckers Plumbing Company in Chicago as a bookkeeper.
On Nov. 27, 1937, she was united in marriage to Emil Carl Ruzicka at SS. Cyril and Methodius Church by Monsignor Thomas Bobal, Monsigner Martin Krizka and the Rev. Charles Zabilka. Three days later, they moved to Greene where they farmed for 29 years before retiring in 1966 when they moved to their home in town.
She was a faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Greene and a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She taught C.C.D. classes for 20 years to over 300 students and was director of religious education for 10 years. She attended the 41st International Eucharistic Congress in Philadelphia.
Millie will be remembered as the "Madonna Lady of Greene," having collected over 200 statues of the Virgin Mary from shrines throughout the world and over 10,000 pictures of the Madonna. During her life, she became an authority on this subject and gave lectures before Catholic and Protestant groups and appeared on several television shows.
Living family members include her son and daughter-in-law, Paul Francis and Teresa Ann Ruzicka, of Dubuque; five grandchildren and their spouses, Capt. Anthony John and Michele Ruzicka, of Honolulu; Capt. Matthew Paul and Annette Ruzicka, of Fort Leavenworth, Kan., Dr. David Lawrence and Jennifer Ruzicka, of Janesville, Wis., Anastacia Marie Ruzicka-Foht and Anthony Michael Foht, of Point Mugu, Calif., and Thomas Mark Ruzicka, of Dubuque; two great grandchildren, Elizabeth Faye Ruzicka and Emilia Marie Ruzicka; a sister-in-law, Jean Stoudek, of Midlothian, Ill.; a niece, Marie Sarver, of Virginia, and a nephew, Frank Stoudek, of California. She is also survived by a brother-in-law, Anthony Ruzicka; and a sister-in-law, Alvina Ruzicka, both of Marble Rock.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Emil Ruzicka on May 21, 1993; three children who died in infancy, Marie Kathleen in 1939, Richard Emil in 1941, and David James in 1946; her parents; and one brother, Frank Stoudek.

** Vernon E. "Zip" Hull
MASON CITY Vernon E. "Zip" Hull, 75, of 1000 S. Illinois Ave., Apt. 602, died Monday (Dec. 14, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Temple Baptist Church, 1211 S. Kentucky Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Mike Ronan officiating. Interment will take place at a later date at Elmwood Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City.
Memorials may be directed to the Vernon "Zip" Hull Memorial Fund.
Vernon "Zip" Hull was born April 3, 1923, in Rockford to John Leonard and Delia Belle (Cook) Hull. He graduated from Rockford High School and entered the Army, serving during World War II.
Vernon drove truck for Plagge Truck Lines and retired in 1972. He umpired fast pitch softball for many years and was due to be inducted into the River City Softball Hall of Fame in 1999. Vernon enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and taking them fishing.
Vernon is survived by one son, Jack Hull and Connie Garza, of Mason City; three grandchildren, Tige Willsher, of Calmar, Chad Hull and Amy Hull, both of Manly; one daughter-in-law, June Black, of Manly; a sister, Eva Cantrell, of Modesto, Calif.; and two brothers, Robert Hull and his wife, Bea, of Jefferson City, Mo., and Donald Hull and his wife, Jean, Rockford.
He was preceded in death by his sons, Willie James Hull and Larry Gene Hull; his daughter, Barbara Gayle Willsher and her husband, Michael; his parents; two brothers Jack Hull and Charles Hull, and three sisters, Marjorie Gabel, Shirley Weaverling and Joyce Shaver.
** Helen Hanawalt
MASON CITY Helen Hanawalt, 94, of 315 N. Carolina Ave., died Sunday (Dec. 13, 1998) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. John L. "Jack" Gannett officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. and one hour prior to services at the church.
Memorials may be given to the Helen Hanawalt Memorial Fund.
Helen was born July 5, 1904, in Ossian, the daughter of John and Amalia "Molly" Nelson Westwick.
She grew up in Sioux Falls, S.D., where she attended and graduated from high school. She later graduated from teachers college in Madison, S.D.
She taught in a rural school for a short time.
Helen married Clyde Hanawalt on Jan. 28, 1926 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City.
She was employed at Baron's and Raizes' Department Store in Mason City for many years.
Helen was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for 72 years, a member of the Elizabeth Circle, a volunteer at the food bank, N.I.V.I.C. center and a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Helen is survived by two daughters, Lila Hanawalt, of Mason City; and Audrey Johnson and her husband, Harlan, of Garner; three grandchildren, Janet Johnson, of Clear Lake, Nancy Stump and her husband, Tom, of Clear Lake; and Scott Johnson and his wife, Susan, of Thornton, Colo.; six great-grandchildren, Jennifer Thompson and her husband, Kevin, of Clear Lake; Erin Schoenberger and her husband, Joe, of LaPorte City; Lindsay Stump, of Olathe, Kan.; Leah Johnson, of Denver, Colo.; Benjamin Johnson, of Thornton, Colo.; and Brian Thompson and his wife, Jamie, of Thompson; and one great-great-grandson, Gage, of LaPorte City.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Norris, Edward and Laurence; her husband, Clyde; and one grandson, David Johnson.

MASON CITY Lanny H. McNamara, 58, 11078 Owl Ave., died Sunday (Dec. 13, 1998) in Oklahoma City.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, and will resume one hour prior to services at the church Thursday.

** Jerry Allen Burgess
MASON CITY Jerry Allen Burgess, 60, of Mason City, died Saturday (Dec. 12, 1998) at the Iowa Veterans Home, Marshalltown.
A Moose service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, immediately followed by a funeral service at the Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 123 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with Brigadier Ellis Bollwhan, of the Salvation Army, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with a flag folding ceremony conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.
Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, until service time.
Jerry Allen Burgess was born Nov. 29, 1938, in Mason City, son of Roscoe and Elsie Burgess. He was married to Marcella Turbitt.
Jerry grew up in Mason City and he served in the Marines during the Korean War. He was a driver for Price and Skarlis Motors.
He enjoyed playing cards and was an active member of the Moose Lodge.
Survivors include two brothers, Lerenzo Burgess, of Marshalltown; and Jack Burgess, of Swaledale; three sisters, Lola Boomgarden and Betty Steece, both of Mason City and JoAnn Anderson, of Arizona; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one sister, Junella Eden; and two brothers, Bob and Dale Burgess.
** Martha Heykants
BELMOND Martha Heykants, 89, of Belmond, died Monday (Dec. 14, 1998) at the Belmond Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Immanuel Reformed Church, rural Belmond, with the Rev. Robert Ford officiating. Burial will be in the Immanuel Reformed Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Tenold Funeral Home, Belmond, and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

ALGONA Bernard J. Meister, 84, of Algona, died Sunday (Dec. 13, 1998) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Cecelia Catholic Church, Algona, with the Rev. Steve Brodersen officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation will be held after 2:30 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Algona, with a 3 p.m. rosary and a 7:30 p.m. parish prayer service.
Bernard J. Meister was born Nov. 20, 1914, at Wall Lake.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma, of Algona; two sons, William, of Wall Lake, and Eugene, of Burt; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Francis Meister and William Meister, both of Wall Lake.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, one brother and one sister.
** Elmer W. Youngworth
LUVERNE Elmer William Youngworth, 78, of LuVerne, died Saturday (Dec. 12, 1998) at the Humboldt Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Benedict Catholic Church, St. Benedict, Iowa, with the Rev. Lynn Bruch officiating. Burial will be in St. Benedict Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will begin after 2:30 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, LuVerne, with a 3 p.m. parish rosary and a 7 p.m. parish prayer service.
Elmer William Youngworth was born Aug. 31, 1920, at LuVerne.
Survivors include his wife, Emily, of LuVerne; his children, Gary Youngworth, of Skyesville, Md., and Kay Simons, of Iowa City; three grandchildren; and his brother, Darwin Youngwirth, of Riverside, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother, one infant daughter, and three brothers.
** Richard Dick Savidge
GENEVA Richard Dick Savidge, 84, died Monday (Dec. 14, 1998) at the Dumont Care Center.
A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Ingham Township Cemetery in Hansell with the Rev. Gerald Condon officiating. Burial will be in Ingham Township Cemetery, Hansell.
There will be no visitation. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Dumont, is in charge of all arrangements.
Memorials may be directed to the Heart or Cancer Funds in the local area.
Richard Dick Savidge was born Feb. 22, 1914, in Franklin County.
Richard is survived by his wife, Maria Savidge, Geneva.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

DUMONT Vivian Creeden, 86, died Saturday (Dec. 12, 1998) at Franklin General Hospital, Hampton.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Dumont United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Connor officiating. Burial will be in Dumont Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Dumont.
Vivian Creeden was born June 2, 1912, in Springfield, S. D.
She is survived by a son, Michael Creeden, Dumont; a brother, Jack Monfore, Brownfield, Texas; three granddaughters; one grandson; and one great-grandson.
Vivian was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one daughter and one brother.
** Evelyn C. Hankner
MAQUEKOTA Evelyn C. Hankner, 86, of Maquoketa, formerly of Waverly, died Friday (Dec. 11, 1998) at the Maquoketa Care Center.
Her family has honored her request to donate her body to the University of Iowa. There will be no public service or visitation.
The Haylock-O'Hara & Lahey Funeral Home, 105 West Maple, Maquoketa, is in charge of arrangements.
Burial will be held at a later date in the Plymouth Cemetery, Plymouth.
Evelyn Sorensen was born on Oct. 4, 1912 in Plymouth, to her parents, Martinas and Emma Otzen-Sorensen.
She married Ed Hankner on July 3, 1943, in Plymouth. He died on Oct. 30, 1986.
She was a graduate of Iowa State Teachers College. She was a homemaker and in earlier years, she taught school in Waverly, until she married.
She was a member of the United Church of Christ, in Waverly.
She is survived by one son, Barney (Melissa) Hankner, of Maquoketa; two grandchildren; and two sisters, Lenore Clifford, of Mason City, and Royce (Mrs. John) Ellis, Shelby, N.C.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister and a brother.
