In 1950 her family came to America. She attended St. Mary's
Catholic Elementary School in Roseville, and Charles City High
School, graduating in 1967.

nursing for one year, and then moved to Forest Lake, where Mary
continued her career for a year.
Shortly thereafter, Steve and Mary moved to Charles City, where
they raised pigs, corn, soybeans and four daughters.

Most of all, Mom loved her family and friends.
Mary was a loving wife to Steve of Charles City; mom to four
beautiful daughters, Michelle (26), Sue (22), Heidi (20) and

for finding something positive in everything, even when it was
difficult, and for teaching everyone around her the importance
of love and friendship. Mary touched us all in her own special
way and she will never be forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Mary A. Exline
Scholarship Fund, in care of First Citizens National Bank, 300

Silence D. Levang
FERGUS FALLS, Minn.
Silence D. Levang, 84, of Fergus Falls, passed away Monday (Jan.
13, 1997) at Lake Region Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Bethel Lutheran
Church, with the Rev. William Colbeck, the Rev. Everald Strom
and the Rev. Omar Gjerness officiating.
Visitation was held Wednesday at the Glende-Johnson-Nelson &
Nilson Funeral Home. Visitation will resume one hour before services
today at the church.
There will also be a service at 11 a.m. Friday at the Bethel
Lutheran Brethren Church, Joice, Iowa, with the Rev. Elwin Walvatne
and the Rev. Everald Strom officiating, with visitation one hour
before services.
Burial will be in Elim Lutheran Cemetery, Fertile, Iowa.
Silence DeEtta (Seglem) Levang, daughter of John W. and June
(Ouverson) Seglem, was born June 13, 1912, in Fertile Township,
Worth County, Iowa, the youngest of four children.
She took her elementary education in the rural school and graduated
from Fertile High School in 1930. That summer, she attended Iowa
State Teachers College. For the next several years, she taught
rural schools. In 1935, Silence enrolled at Northwestern Bible
School, Minneapolis, graduating in 1938 and Lutheran Bible School
in 1939.
Silence and Joseph Levang were united in marriage in the Seglem
home on June 9, 1940, with the Rev. S.L. Klyve officiating. They
lived in several places where Joe served churches, with Silence,
including Aitkin, Minn.; Brooklyn, N.Y.; Huxley, Iowa; Chicago,
Ill.; West Union, Iowa; and Pasadena, Calif. In the fall of 1957
Joe, Silence and family moved to Fergus Falls where they have
made their home since.
Silence came to a personal knowledge of salvation in April of
1931 in the revival at Fertile, Iowa, and she loved and served
her Lord faithfully throughout her life. In all of the churches
they served, Silence was active in the Women's Missionary Fellowship,
Sunday School and in the earlier years was also active in the
youth ministries of the church.
She was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church and was active
in many capacities including the Library Board, the Women's
Missionary Fellowship, Synodical Missions and Lutheran Brethren
School activities.
She was a charter member of the Bethel Stitch-a-Quilters, having
also helped organize a quilters' group in Pasadena. Silence also
served as a substitute elementary teacher for 25 years.
An ardent and exacting quilter, she worked at cross-stitching
and needlepoint, striving for perfection in everything. Her children
and grandchildren were very precious to her and she loved them
dearly.
Silence and Joe were always a ``team'' in virtually all that
they did. Where you saw the one, you saw the other. This was
their wish to serve the Lord as a team and God granted them 56
years together.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph H. Levang; her son, Mark
(Marie) Levang and her daughter, Linda (James) Bjork, all of
Fergus Falls; six grandchildren; a sister, Helen (John) Humphrey;
several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
To paraphrase what Paul said in II Timothy 4:7-8, it can be
said of Silence at the close of her long life that ``she has
fought the good fight, she has finished the race, she has kept
the faith. Now there is in store for her the crown of righteousness,
which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to her on that
day and not only to her, but also to all who have longed for
his appearing.''
Silence will be laid to rest in Elim Lutheran Cemetery, rural
Fertile, Iowa, resting in a lot next to her brother, Enos.
