Joseph Halfman

MANLY — Funeral services for Joseph Halfman, 93, a retired Manly area farmer, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Manly.

He died Sunday (May 19, 1985) at a Mason City hospital.

The Rev. Linus Rasing will officiate and burial will be at the church cemetery.

Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer Bride Colonial chapel, Manly, where a parish wake will be held at 7:30 tonight

Mr. Halfman was born Aug. 14, 1891, in Stacyville to Christopher and Rose Halfman. He came from a family of seven brothers and sisters and 14 half-brothers and half-sisters and attended schools In the Stacyville area.

Mr. Halfman was an Army veteran of World War I having served in France. On Feb 11, 1925, he married Lila M. May in Stacyville. They farmed near Osage until 1931 and moved to a farm north of Manly. In 1960 they retired and moved to Manly.

Mr. Halfman was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a 60-year member of the American Legion Edward Tosel Post 110, Manly.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Eldon (Mary Lou) Olson of Manly, and Mrs. Don (Carol) Longacre of Monroe, Wash.; one son, Gene of Manly; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one sister, Christine Simon of Stacyville, and two brothers, Paul of Campbellsport, Wis., and Hubert of Stacyville. 


 Ralph Davenport

MASON CITY — Ralph R. Davenport, 65, of 617 S. Grant, died Monday (May 20, 1985) at a Mason City hospital.

Mr. Davenport retired last August as consumer services coordinator for Interstate Power Co.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 209 2nd NE, Mason City.  


Vera Grau

GARNER – Mrs. Vera Grau, 83, of garner died Monday (May 20, 1985) at her home.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Cataldo Funeral Home at Garner.


Raymond Worden

CLEAR LAKE — Funeral services were held May 15 In Spirit Lake for Raymond Worden, 70, of Spirit Lake, formerly of Clear Lake, who died, May 13, 1985 in Spirit Lake.

Burial Was in Memorial Gardens, Spirit Lake.

Mr. Worden formerly operated a resort in Spirit Lake and was also in the refrigeration business there.

He was born Dec. 23, 1914, in Clear Lake to Roscoe and Nettie (Ebaugh) Worden. He attended Clear Lake schools.

Survivors include his wife, Clara of Spirit Lake, and three sons, Dennis and Curtis, both of Spirit Lake, and Ray Jr. of Oregon. 


John ‘Jack’ Soles

CHARLES CITY — John "Jack" Soles; 75, a retired employee of Salsbury Laboratories, Charles City, died Saturday (May, 18,1985) at a Charles City nursing home.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church on Chapel Lane, Charles City.

Dr. Jerry Springston will officiate and burial will be at Sunnyside, Memory Gardens, Charles City.

Visitation will be after 9 a.m. today until 9 tonight, from 9 - 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hauser Funeral Home; 1205 S. Main, Charles City, and after 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Mr. Soles was born Dec. 9, 1909, in Paris, Ontario, Canada, to John and Elizabeth (Midgeley) Soles. He was educated in Burford, Ontario, Canada schools and moved to Charles City in 1936 when he became associated with Dr. Salsbury's Laboratories

On June 12. 1937, he married Floris Molgard at Santa Ana, Calif. Mr. Soles retired from Salsbury Laboratories in 1975 after 39 years with the corporation.

He was a member of the Charles City Kiwanis Club, First Baptist Church where he was a trustee and First Baptist Church Brotherhood; he also repaired clocks as a hobby.

Survivors include his wife, Floris; one daughter, Mrs. Donald (Joan) Reser, of Dougherty; three grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Lillian Boman of Tillsonburg, Ontario, Canada. 


Miriam Love

GARNER – Former Garner resident Miriam Love of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Monday (May 20, 1985) in a Chattanooga hospital.

Arrangements are pending at Cataldo Funeral Home at Garner.

Margaret Donner

OSAGE — Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Church, Osage, for Margaret Donner, 92, of Osage, who died Tuesday (May 21, 1985) at an Osage nursing home.

The Rev. Leon Connelly will officiate and burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Osage.

Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Thursday at Champion Funeral Home, Osage.

Mrs. Donner was born Aug. 24, 1892 in Germany, and came to the United States with her parents at the age of 8 months. She attended New Haven schools and married Jess Donner in 1921 in New Haven. She later moved to Osage where she lived the rest of her life. Mr. Donner died in April 1981.

Survivors include one son, Robert, Osage; eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, and one sister. Mary Hughes, Long Beach. Calif.  


Miriam Love

garner — Miss Miriam Love, 70, of Chattanooga, Tenn., formerly of Garner, died Monday (May 20, 1985) at Chattanooga.

Funeral services will be held at 10.30 a.m. Thursday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel here, with the Rev Jerry Wolcott of the United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Concord Cemetery, Gamer.

Miriam Love, the daughter of Mathew and Mabel (Christie) Love was born May 31, 1914 on a farm south of Garner. After graduating from Garner High School, she attended Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls, where she obtained her teaching certificate. She worked for the Hastings Law Firm, Garner, for several years and then attended the American Institute of Business in Des Moines.

In April 1942, she moved to Chattanooga where she worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority until retiring in June 1979. She was a member of the Christian Church In Chattanooga.

Visitation will be after 1 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, Garner.

Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Robert (Opal) Klepac, Rockford, Ill; Eloise Love, Santa Monica, Calif.; two brothers, John Love of Algona, and Quentin Love, Mesa, Ariz. 


Vera E. Grau

GARNER — Mrs. Vera E. Grau, 83, of Garner, died Monday (May 20. 1985) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church here, with the Rev. Jerry Wolcott, as officiant. Burial will be in Concord Cemetery, Garner.

Mrs. Grau, the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth (Hager) Vaughn, was born Nov. 4, 1901 at Cedar Falls. After graduating from high school, she attended Ellsworth College at Iowa Falls and received her teaching certificate.

In the 1920’s, she taught business education at Garner High School. After her marriage to Verne Grau, they moved to Chicago for several years and then returned to Garner where they farmed north of town. In 1957 they retired and moved into Garner.

Mrs. Grau was social welfare director for Hancock County for many years and had also worked with Mary McMahon at the Blossom Shop.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and Ruth Circle. She had been a member of Relief Chapter 391 Order of Eastern Star for more than 50 years, had belonged to Homemakers, Hancock County Hospital Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary; was past president of We Sixty’s and was former chairwomen of the Hancock County Farm Bureau Women.

Visitation will be after 1 p.m. today at Cataldo Funeral Chapel, Garner.

Survivors include her husband. Verne; two sons, Gerald of LaSuer, Minn., and Gregory, Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska; Three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.


James Henry Jacobs

ROCKWELL – Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Patterson-James-Murphy Chapel in Rockwell for James Henry Jacobs, 60, of Rockwell, who died Tuesday (May 21, 1985) at a Mason City hospital. 


Ralph R. Davenport

MASON CITY — Ralph R. Davenport, 65, 617 S. Grant, died Monday (May 20, 1985) at a Mason City hospital.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St John's Episcopal Church, 120 1st NE, Mason City, with the Rev. James F. Norton, rector of St. John's Episcopal Church officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, with Masonic Graveside Services at 1 p.m. by Harding Lodge 649 AF & AM.

Mr. Davenport was born July 21, 1919 at Geneva to Frank E and Frances L. (Thayer) Davenport. He graduated from Geneva High School in 1937 and attended aeronautical school in Trenton, NJ. He was employed by E.R.C.O. Corp. where he installed and tested gun turrets on the Liberator Bomber for the Navy during World War II.

He married Judy Mursick on July 21,1943 at Davidsonville, Md. In 1947, they moved to Mason City, where he worked for Interstate power Co. He served as Consumer Service coordinator until his retirement in August 1984.

He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church and former Senior Warden, was a member of the Mason City Noon Lions Club, member and past master Harding Lodge 649 AF & AM, 32 degree Mason, member of the Cedar Rapids Consistory.

Cremation was held. The family requests that memorials be given to St John's Episcopal Church or the Salvation Army. Major Erickson Funeral Home 209 2nd NE, is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Judy; one daughter, Mrs. Hilbert (Donna L.) Smith. Clarksville; one son, Petty Officer Richard W. Davenport, U.S. Coast Guard stationed to New Orleans; one brother, Frank T. (Bud) Davenport; one granddaughter, Holley E. Smith, Clarksville.


Kenneth Warrington

ST. ANSGAR — Kenneth Warrington, 68, of St. Ansgar, died Tuesday (May 21, 1985) at an Osage hospital.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar.

Visitation will be from 7 - 9 tonight at Champion Funeral Home, Osage, where further arrangements are incomplete.

James H. Jacobs

ROCKWELL — Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church, Rockwell, for James Henry Jacobs, 68, of Rockwell, who died Tuesday, (May 21, 1985) at a Mason City hospital.

The Rev. Mark Clem will officiate and burial will be in Rockwell Cemetery.

Visitation will be after 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. Friday at Patterson James Murphy Funeral Chapel, Rockwell.

Mr. Jacobs had worked for the Rock Island Railroad for 35 years. He was born Oct. 11, 1915 in Trenton, Mo., to Charles and Mildred (Fertig) Jacobs. He married Evelyn Menter in January 1939. She died in November 1961.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Don (Alice) Zweck. Dougherty; one son, James Frank Jacobs, Waterloo; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; one sister, Elsie Schwartz, Chico, Calif, and one brother, Frank Jacobs. Mason City. 


Arnold E. Blau

KLEMME - Funeral services for Arnold E. Blau, 65, of Klemme, who died Tuesday (May 21, 1985) from injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Britt, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church at Klemme.

The Rev. Herbert Shafer of United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Ell Township Cemetery at Klemme, preceded by graveside military rites.

Visitation will be after 10 a.m. today until time of service Friday at Tenold Funeral Home in Klemme.

He was born July 30, 1919 at Alexander, son of John J. and Sophie Stoffer Blau. On June 26, 1941, he married Viola Schwichtenberg.

He worked for 37 years as service manager for Pontiac dealers in the Garner area. A veteran of World War II, he served in the-Sixth Army, 414 Combat Engineers. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 5519 in Garner.

He is survived by his wife, Viola, of Klemme; three daughters, Mrs. Ted (Sharon) Ludwig, of Perry; Mrs. Lyle (Nancy) Waddingham of Klemme, and Mrs. Glen (Peggy) Van Blaricom of Howe, Texas; one sister, Mrs. Ann Armstrong, of Ames; two brothers, Walter Blau of Alexander, and Virgil Blau of Ames, and eight grandsons.


Kenneth Warrington

ST. ANSGAR -- Funeral services for Kenneth Warrington, 68, a retired farmer of St Ansgar, will be 1:30 p.m. today at Immanuel Lutheran Church, St Ansgar. He died Tuesday (May 21, l985) at an Osage hospital.

The Rev. Norman Betke will officiate and burial will be in Rock Creek Lutheran Cemetery, rural Osage.

Visitation will be prior to services at the church.

Champion Funeral Home, Osage, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Warrington was the son of Laverne and Mabel (Basford) Warrington, born July 19, 1916 near St Ansgar. He attended Union Township country school and Osage High School. On March 9, 1937 he married Virginia Benson in rural Osage. He had farmed for 37 years until retiring to St Ansgar in 1974.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia; one son, Robert, St Ansgar; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one sister, Mrs. Joe. (Margaret) Ebeling, Mason City, and three brothers, Gerald, Charles City; Clifford, Asheville, N.C., and Orville, Cincinnati.

Russell O'Connell

FLOYD — Russell Virgil 0’Connell, 75, of Floyd, and a retired employee of White Farm Equipment Co., Charles City, died Thursday (May 23, 1985) at home.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Floyd, with the Rev. Charlotte Mallott officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, Charles City.

Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at Sunnyside Chapel and Funeral Home, rural Charles City, and after 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Mr. O'Connell retired from White Farm in 1972 after 33 years with the company.

He was born Feb. 18, 1910 in New Hampton to Henry and Ida (Tonn) O'Connell. On Oct. 12, 1947, he married Lilith M. Miller at Nashua. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the 634 Tank Destroyers.

Mr. O'Connell was a member of the UIW, American Legion, UAW Retirees of Charles City and the Sixty Plus Club of Floyd.

Survivors include his wife, Lilith; two sons, Bradley D., Kasson, Minn.; and Trevis K., Floyd; one granddaughter; two sisters. Regina Erickson, Nora Springs, and Janet Pugliese, Brevard, N.C., and one brother, Merle, Charles City. 


Robert Thurston

FOREST CITY -- Forest City native Robert Thurston, 68, of Des Moines, died Wednesday (May 22, 1985) at the Des Moines Veterans Hospital.

Funeral services will be at noon Saturday at the Highland Park Funeral Home, Des Moines, with the Rev. Frank Palmer, All Saints Catholic Church, Des Moines, officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Algona.

Robert Thurston was born May 21, 1917 at Forest City to Alvin and Lila (Moffitt) Thurston. He married Marguerite Carney, also of Forest City. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the VFW.

The Highland Park Funeral Home, Des Moines, is in charge of arrangements.

Surviving is his wife. Marguerite. 


Rena Kallestad

RAKE — Rena Kallestad, 82, of Rake, died Tuesday (May 21, 1985) at an Albert Lea, Minn., hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at Zion Lutheran Church, Rake, with the Rev. Arlyn Norris officiating. Burial will be in South Blue Earth Cemetery, rural Blue Earth, Minn.

Mrs. Kallestad was born Sept. 14. 1902 in Faribault County, Minn., to Nels and Mary (Sandum) Sabin She married Lester Kallestad on Jan. 8, 1929 at Rake. He died in 1931.

The Winter Funeral Home, Buffalo Center, is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include four sisters, Mrs. Melvin (Mabel) Olson and Emma DeBoer, both of Rake, Arvilla Olson, Elmore, Minn., and Mrs. Arthur (Opal) Story, Lewistown, Mont.; five brothers, Arthur, Edwin and Harlan Sabin, both of Blue Earth, Minn.; Clifford, Bricelyn, Minn., and Rudolph of Navoto, Calif. 


Lorraine Penney

LITTLE CEDAR — Lorraine Penney, 61, of Forest City, former Little Cedar resident, died Thursday (May 23, 1985) at her home in Forest City.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Little Cedar Methodist Church, with the Rev. Loyd Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Little Cedar Cemetery.

Mrs. Penney was born Jan. 28, 1924 at Little Cedar, the daughter of Albert and Hazel (Vosklander) Hultman. She attended Little Cedar schools and married Vinus (Bill) Penney in February 1941.

They farmed in Mitchell County south of Little Cedar for many years. Mr. Penney died May 18, 1979.

For the past 13 years she has delivered Winnebago Motor Homes and for the past four years has lived in Forest City.

Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today at the Champion Funeral Home, Osage.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Matt (Karmen) Hermann, Stacyville; one son, Michael of Little Cedar; one brother, Lawrence Hultman, Osage, and two grandchildren.


Ingvald Horvei

LAKE MILLS — Ingvald Horvei, 78, a retired Lake Mills area fanner, died Wednesday (May 22, 1985) at an Albert Lea, Minn., hospital

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday at Salem Lutheran Church, Lake Mills, with the Rev. DuWayne Dalen officiating. Burial will be in Salem Lutheran Cemetery, Lake Mills.

Visitation will be today at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills.

Mr. Horvei was born May 3, 1907 in Worth County to Lewis and Anna Horvei He farmed in the Lake Mills area and married Myrtle Peterson in November 1927 in Lake Mills. She died in 1967. He married Elnore Lysne Ostby on Aug. 22, 1970 at Sun Prairie, Wis.

Survivors include his wife, Elnore; one daughter, Mrs. Joe (Marion) Florence Creighton, Monmouth, Ill.; one son, Lyle, Jonesboro, Ark.; a stepdaughter, Mrs. James (Ellen) Bauman, Scottsdale, Ariz., and two stepsons, Roger Ostby Jr., Elk River, Minn., and John Ostby, Roseville, Minn.; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Luella and Agnes Horvei, both of Minneapolis, and Mrs. William' (Evelyn) Bell, Seattle, and two brothers, Joe, Fairmont, Minn., and Andrew, Charles City.


Martha D. Petersen

MASON CITY — Martha Dorothea Petersen, 91, of 1712 N. Delaware, died Thursday (May 23, 1985) at a Mason City nursing home.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Patterson James Funeral Chapel, 123 2nd SE, Mason City. 


Arnold E. Blau

KLEMME — Funeral services will be 10 a.m. today at the United Methodist Church, Klemme, for Arnold E. Blau, 65, of Klemme, who died Tuesday (May 21. 1985) from injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Britt.

Missing from a list of survivors to a previous obituary was a son, Arnold J. Blau of Mason City.

Martha D. Petersen

MASON CITY — Memorial-services will be 1:30 p.m. today at Patterson James Funeral Chapel, 123 2nd SE, Mason City, for Martha Dorothea Petersen, 91,who died Thursday (May 23. 1985) at a Mason City nursing home.

She lived at 1712 N. Delaware.

The Rev. Landis Olson will officiate. The body was cremated.

The family requests memorials be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City.

The former Martha Paulsen was born May 25, 1893 in Fehmarn, Germany, to Frederick and Dorothy (Jappe) Paulsen. She came to the United States with her family in 1907,settling in southeastern Iowa.

In 1912, she married Martin S. Petersen in Grand Mound. They settled in North Iowa were they farmed in Worth County. In 1941 they moved to Mason City.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include two daughters. Mrs. George (Ruth) Hansen, Bolan, and Mrs. Don (Phyllis) Pearson, Adel; a son, Martin E. Petersen, San Diego, one brother, Frederick Paulsen, Kensett; 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.


Clara E. Flugum

EMMONS, Minn.-—-Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Emmons Lutheran Church, Emmons, for Mrs. Jewell (Clara E.) Flugum, 79, of Emmons. She died Friday (May 24, 1995) at a Lake Mills, Iowa, nursing home.

The Rev. Clarence Baalson will officiate and burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery, Albert Lea.

Visitation will be Sunday afternoon and evening at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills.

Mrs. Flugum was born Sept. 25, 1905 in Winnebago County to T. K. and Julia Anderson. She married Jewell Flugum on Jan. 23,1936.

Survivors include her husband, Jewell; two daughters, Mrs. Arlo (Janice) Jacobson, Lake Mills; and Mrs. Owen (Lenore) Westman, Des Monies, Iowa; one foster son, John Duff, Alva, Fla.; five grandchildren, two foster grandchildren and two foster great-grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Leonard (Bertha) Jacobs, Mason City, Iowa.
