Mary Jo Wentz October 1921-March 25, 2001

Mary Josephine "Jo" Wentz, 79, of Stockton, California, died
on Sunday,
March 25, 2001, in a Stockton Hospital.
Memorial services were held
on
Wednesday, April 11, at the First Presbyterian Church in Stockton.
Mary Jo was born in 1921, to George and Regina Norby Rosenberg in
Iowa Falls. She graduated from the Iowa Falls High School in 1939,
attended Ellsworth College, Iowa State University, William and Mary
University and the University of Maryland. She was married to John
B. Wentz for 59 years. She was director of the Art Museum in
Riverside from 1967-70, tutored at the Beverly Hills High School and
was active in the Stockton Sister City Association.
She was a member
of the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary, Pixie Woods and PEO. She
and her husband had visited 46 countries with the most recent a tour
of Egypt this past January.
She is survived by her husband, John; three daughters, Anne Elise
Richert of Pleasanton, California, Barbara Johnson of Scottsdale, Arizona
and
Betty Lou Keehn of Phoenix, Arizona; and a son, John Wentz III of
Oakland, California; six grandchildren; a sister, Elise Beaver of
Cleveland, Ohio; and a nephew, Jim Crotty of Iowa Falls.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; a son, Richard; a sister, Anne Crotty; and a brother, Gordon Rosenberg.

Donald Dannen

Donald Dannen, 80, of Prescott Valley,
Arizona, formerly of Alden, died on Sunday, March 25, 2001, in Prescott.
Memorial
services were held on Thursday, March 29, at the Mingus View Presbyterian Church in
Prescott Valley, with inurnment on Saturday, June 9, at 1:00 p.m.,
in the
Alden Cemetery. Following the inurnment there will be a time of
fellowship and remembrances at the Alden Public Library.
Donald was born on October 25, 1920 at Melbourne, to Ralph and Meta Hartkopp Dannen. He served in the United States Navy during World
War II and worked as a building contractor in Prescott Valley for 25
years.
He enjoyed softball and enjoyed working with youth. He was
inducted into the Iowa Softball Hall of Fame in 1993. He was a
member of the American Legion Post No. 108 of Prescott Valley, the Mingus View Presbyterian Church, where he helped organize and build
the church. He had been married to his wife, Ethel, for 53 years.
He is survived by his wife, Ethel of Prescott Valley; two sons,
Scott and wife, Jean of Dewey, Arizona and Blake of Prescott Valley;
a sister, Eleanora Larson of New Hampton; and four grandchildren.

Alma Bell

Alma Leanna Bell, 68, of Iowa Falls, died on Tuesday,
March 27, 2001, at the Scenic Manor Care Facility, Iowa Falls.
Burial will be held at a later date.
The
Linn's Funeral Home of Iowa Falls was in charge of the arrangements.
Alma was born on November 5, 1933 at Kirksville, Missouri, to Arthur and Fracia
Pickett Robertson. She attended the Kirksville Community Schools. She
was employed by Boyt Manufacturing in Iowa Falls. Many people called
her "Ma Bell."
Alma is survived by two sons, Greg and Doug Bell, both of Iowa
Falls; a grandson, Dillion; a sister, Valee Claybrook of Kirksville,
Missouri; four brothers, Aurthur Robinson of Greentop, Missouri, Norman
Robinson of Unionville, Missouri, Gregg Robinson of Decorah and Larry
Robinson of Edina, Missouri.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and
her husband, Sidney Bell.

Angeline
DeVries

Angeline J. DeVries, 93, of Austinville, died on
Thursday, March 29, 2001, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.
Funeral services were held
on Monday, April 2, at the Christian Reformed Church,
with burial in the Memorial Park Cemetery, both at Austinville. Rev.
George McGuire officiated.
Angeline was born on November 18, 1907 at Kanawha, to Hensman and Anna
Johnson Smidt. She attended rural school and at age 13 moved with
her family to Austinville where she completed her education. On
March 25, 1931, she married Harm DeVries at the Christian Reformed
Church Parsonage in Aplington. They farmed at Aredale and Aplington
and in 1944 they moved into Austinville and purchased a livestock
buying and trucking company that they operated together. She sold
Avon products for 17 years and retired at the age of 89.
She was a
member of the Christian Reformed Society and was active in the
Ladies Society. Her hobbies were crocheting afghans and other
handiwork.
She is survived by two sons, Harold and wife, Carolyn of Austinville and Duane and wife, Marilyn of Osage; three daughters,
Anna Mae Smiens and husband, Epp, Freda Harms and husband, Orlynn
and Carol Luchtenburg and husband, Wendell, all of Aplington; 16
grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 6
great-step-grandchildren; a sister, Anna Hoffman of Ackley; and a
brother-in-law, Jake DeVries of Aplington.
She was preceded in
death by her parents; her husband in 1970; and seven brothers,
Henry, Ubbe, Gerhard, John, Ludwig, Hensman and Angus Smidt.
The
Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington was in charge of the arrangements.

Irene Hawthorne

Irene E. Hawthorne, 87, of Fort Dodge, formerly of
Alden, died on Thursday, March 29, 2001, at her home.
Memorial services were held
on
Sunday, April 1, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, with
minister Richard Miller officiating.
Irene was born on August 10, 1913 in Hardin County, to Leon and Luella
Warden Montandon. She attended country school near Alden and on October
10, 1931, she married Lawrence Beyer. After his death in 1970, she
married Batie Hawthorne in 1973 and moved to Fort Dodge.
She was a
member of the Jehovah's Witnesses. She was a great seamstress and
porcelain doll maker and enjoyed baking.
She is survived by two daughters, Betty Britt and husband, Melvin
of Ames and Marje Alstott and husband, Larry of Fort Fodge; four
grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; five sisters, Lucille
Scoles, Leona Hackman, Gladys Sarten, Shirley Drenth and Opal
McKinney; and a brother, Harold Montandon.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; two husbands; and a brother, Earl Montandon.

David Inks

David LeRoy Inks, 65, of Alden, died on Friday, March 30, 2001,
at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.
Funeral services were held
on
Tuesday, April 3, at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Alden, with Rev.
Jay Jaeger officiating. There will be no visitation. His body was
donated to the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health
Services in Des Moines.
David was born on October 31, 1935 in Alden, to LeRoy "Steve" and Birdie
Hoversten Inks. He graduated from the Alden High School in 1954. In
September 1960, he married Janice Weuve and they were later
divorced. He was a farmer and coached Little League Baseball for 22
years and helped organize the Little League trip to Canada.
David
was past president of Hilltop Village, active in the Alden Booster
Club, Cub Scouts, Webelos, Alden Days, Meals on Wheels and on the
chain gang for the football team. He was in the Greenbelt Bike Club
and rode on RAGBRAI over 10 years. He served in the United States
Army and was an avid sportsman and hunter. He was a member of the St.
Paul's Lutheran Church in Alden.
He is survived by two sons, Michael and his wife, Crystal of Alden
and Mark and his fiancée, Linda Rush of Buckeye; four grandchildren;
two sisters, Stella Clancy of Jewell and Betty Grimm of Ft. Wayne,
Indiaana.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The

Fern Lewis

Lillian Fern Lewis, 92, of Iowa Falls, died on Saturday,
March 31, 2001, at the Scenic Manor Care Facility in Iowa Falls.
Funeral services were held
on Tuesday, April 3, at the Linn's Funeral Home, Iowa
Falls, with burial in the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls.
Fern was born on August 15, 1908, in a sod house on her parents' farm
northwest of Brewster, Kansas, to George and Minnie McDaniel O'Neal.
She graduated from the Brewster High School and the Columbus, Nebraska,
business school. She married Homer Lewis in 1930 at Brewster. She
was a bookkeeper for the Lewis Implement Company of Iowa Falls, which
she and her husband ran from 1941-55.
Fern was a member of the
First United Methodist Church, Iowa Falls, Order of the Eastern Star
Ascension Lodge No. 158, Eldora; Gloria White Shrine; and a past
Worthy Matron of Eastern Star Chapter No. 348, Iowa Falls.
She is survived by two sons, Don and wife, Dolores of Phoenix,
Arizona and Dale and wife, Constance of Rio Verde, Arizona; five
grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in
death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Cora Rice and Laurane Osborn; and three brothers, Jay, Harley and Herman O'Neal.

Willard Latham

Willard Chester Latham, 89, of Alexander, died on Sunday,
April 1, 2001, at the Hampton Care Center, after a lengthy illness.
Funeral services will be
held on Wednesday, April 4, at 1:30 p.m., at the Nazareth
Lutheran Church in Coulter, with burial in the Coulter Cemetery.
Pastor Mary Peterson will officiate.
Willard was born on February 18, 1912 at Alexander, to Jesse and Mamie
Meyer Latham. He graduated from the Alexander High School in 1929
during the Depression and he and his twin brother supported each other
through Iowa State College, where he graduated with a B.S. Degree in
Dairy Husbandry. On June 30, 1938, he married Evelyn Johansen of
Latimer. He joined his father in farming and in 1947 the dairy
business gave way to a seed business, producing seed oats for
retail. This business grew, changing from oats to soybeans, from a
retail to a dealer organization and from a local business to the
six-state regional company known as Latham Seeds. Three sons, Bill,
Don and Tom joined the family seed business.
Willard served as
president and finance chairman of his church during the building
project and on the Alexander School Board for 13 years. He was a
former Franklin County Farm Bureau president and secretary.
Willard was a director of the Iowa Crops and Soils Research Council and
served on the Iowa Committee for Agriculture Development and Iowa State
University Alumni Association. He served on many committees,
fund-raising and legislative efforts for the Iowa State Agronomy
Department and the College of Agriculture. He was a member of the
Order of the Knoll at ISU and an honorary member of both the Iowa
Crop Improvement Association and the Iowa Seed Association.
Willard was a member and promoter of the Iowa and
American Soybean Association and received many awards and honorary
memberships in other soybean associations and from Iowa State
University. He also received the Distinguished Service Award of the
Franklin County ISU Alumni
Association.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; five sons, Willard
"Bill" and
wife, Linda of Alexander, Robert and wife, Sue of Cedar Rapids,
James and wife, Marcia of Clear Lake, Donald and wife, Marilyn of
Alexander and Thomas and wife, Kathy of Alexander; 12
grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; a twin brother, Wilbur; and an infant daughter,
Carol Jean.
The

the arrangements.

Henry S. Harms, 70, of Iowa Falls, died on Monday, April
2, 2001, at the Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls.
Memorial
services will be held on Friday, April 6, at 10:00 a.m., at the Linn's Funeral
Chapel, Iowa Falls, with inurnment in the Friends Cemetery, Iowa Falls.
Military honors will be provided by the Walter Sayer American Legion
Post No. 182 and the Roll-Harless Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3974,
both in Eldora.
Henry was born on September 23, 1930 at Alexander, to Henry and Mary
Freeze Harms. He attended the Franklin Consolidated School at Alexander,
graduating in 1950. He served in the United States Army from 1951-54. On September 23, 1955, he married Donna Mae Stiefvater and they were
later divorced. On June 17, 1979, he married Edna Vaughn at Iowa
Falls. He had been employed by Welden Brothers Construction, Iowa
Falls, retiring in 1990.
He was a member of the Roll-Harless
American Legion Post No. 182, Eldora.
Henry is survived by four daughters, Lori Kay Harms of Iowa Falls,
Frances Maes and husband, Mike of Iowa Falls, Kathy Harms of Alden
and Tracy Palmer and husband, Sonny of Denver, Colorado; a son, Henry
Michael Harms and wife, Karen of Fort Collins, Colorado; and a
stepson, Gary Vaughn of Iowa Falls.
He was preceded in death by his
parents; his wife, Edna; two sisters, Grace Kula and Mary Clute; and
a brother, Ernie Harms.

Bessie B. Laughlin

Bessie B. Laughlin, was born on April 29, 1910 at Jefferson, Iowa, the
daughter of Emmett and Nellie Luella "Bishop" Laughlin. She
attended the Winchester Country School in Van Buren County, Iowa. On
December 28, 1940, she was united in marriage to John E. "Jack" Reed
at Mason City, Iowa. Bessie had been employed as a waitress, egg
worker and packer for Farmers Exchange and house caretaker, being
last employed by Dr. Francis Pisney's office, Iowa Falls.
She was a
member of Royal Neighbors and a former member of the Iowa Falls
Ladies of the Moose.
Bessie B. Reed is survived by two sisters, Mazie Niece of Antioch,
California and Margie Staggs of San Jose, California; one brother, William H. Laughlin and wife, Ruth of Hayward, California;
and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her
parents, Emmett and Nellie Laughlin; her husband, John "Jack"
Reed; two sisters, Hillis McWhirter and Irene Woebke; and three
brothers, Leroy Laughlin, Ernist Laughlin and Wayland "Dub"
Laughlin.

Jason Abbas

Jason Mell Abbas, 26, of Belmond, died on Tuesday, April 3,
2001, at his home.
Funeral services and burial were at
the St. Peter's United
Church of Christ, rural Geneva.
Jason was born on October 15, 1974 at Hampton, to Fred and Mary Harris
Abbas of Geneva. He graduated from the Ackley-Geneva High School in
1994, Ellsworth College in 1996 and received a Bachelor of Science
Degree in Agronomy in 1998 from Iowa State University. Jason was an
intern for Pioneer Hybrid in corn research, worked as a research
assistant for the ISU Agronomy Weed Science Department and was a
research and development intern for Dupont, while in college. From
September 1998 until the present he has been production agronomist
for the J.C. Robinson Seed Company at Belmond.
He enjoyed being
involved in community activities and fishing in the boundary waters.
He is survived by his parents, Fred and Mary Abbas of Geneva; and
three brothers, Scott and James of Geneva and Mark of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Carl W. Davis

Carl W. Davis, 87, of Marshalltown, formerly of
Webster City, died on Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at the Marshalltown Medical and
Surgical Center.
Funeral services were held
on Saturday, April 7, at the Foster
Funeral Home, with burial in the Graceland Cemetery, both in Webster
City. Rev. Russell Surls officiated. Graveside military rites were
conducted by the American Legion Post No. 191, Webster City.
Carl was born on August 7, 1913 at Davis City, to Homer and Elsie Graham
Davis. He graduated from the Davis City High School and attended
Graceland College at Lamoni. He served in the United States Army in
the Pacific Theatre during World War II. On March 25, 1931, he
married Dorothy Richardson at Davis City where they lived until
moving to Webster City in 1950. He worked at Naden's as an
electrician. The couple were divorced and in December 1967 he married Reckstra Ubben at Kamrar and they lived in Webster City. He retired
from Naden's in 1983 and had lived the past 5 years at the Veteran's
Home in Marshalltown.
He was a former member of the Trinity Lutheran
Church and the American Legion Post #191, both in Webster City.
He is survived by his wife, Reckstra; a daughter, Carla Nohrenberg
and husband, Keith of Iowa Falls; two sons, Ron and wife, Nancy of
Clarion and Jerry and wife, Marcia of Boone; seven grandchildren;
five great-grandchildren; a sister, Opal Roudybush of Plymouth; and
a brother, Charles Davis of Council Bluffs.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; and a granddaughter, Dawn Stotts.

Martha Oelmann, 76, of Iowa Falls, died
on Thursday, April
5, 2001, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.
Funeral services
were held on Monday, April 9, at the Faith Presbyterian Church in
Ackley, with burial in the East Friesland Cemetery, Ackley. Rev. Tim
Diehl officiated.
Martha was born on December 26, 1924 in Grundy County, to Luppe and Theda
Wubbena Feikes. She was married on October 6, 1945, to George M. Oelmann in Ackley. She had been employed by the Ackley
Canning
Factory and had done housecleaning.
Martha was a member of the Faith
Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Judy Rush and husband, Jim Meyer of
Ackley; a son, Ronald Oelmann of Nevada; seven grandchildren; six
great-grandchildren; four brothers, Meint Feikes and wife, Anna,
Henry Feikes and wife, Darlene, Fred Feikes and wife, Ramona and
Louie Feikes and wife, Carol, all of Ackley; and one sister, Annie
Oelmann and husband, Else of Iowa Falls.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; her husband; and two granddaughters, Jennifer and
Amanda Oelmann.

Merna Hansen

Merna Carlene Hansen, 90, of Iowa Falls, died
on
Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Nora Springs.
Funeral services were held
on
Saturday, April 7, at the Linn's Funeral Chapel in Iowa Falls, with
burial in the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls. Rev. Galen Smith of the First
Presbyterian Church in Greene, officiated.
Merna was born on October 26, 1910 at Iowa Falls, to Tillman and Julia
Thompson Whitman. She attended the Iowa Falls Community Schools and on
June 20, 1936, she married Harry "Pete" Hansen. She farmed with her
husband, northwest of Iowa Falls. She had been a telephone operator
for Northwestern Bell Telephone and a nurses aide at the Heritage Care
Center and Ellsworth Municipal Hospital.
Merna was a member of the
First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls, the Averine Rebecca
Lodge and Women of the Moose, both in Iowa Falls.
She is survived by two daughters, Karen Smith and husband, Marvin
of Nora Springs and Joan Geil and husband, William of Knoxville; a
son Thomas Hansen and friend, Pat Awe of Ackley; 11 grandchildren;
17 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Eleanor Russell of Iowa Falls.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a grandson; a
great-grandson; two sisters, Theo Behling and Pauline Jensen; and
four brothers, Earl, Bud, John and George Whitman.

Catharine Hobson, 79, of Eldora, died
on Friday, April 6,
2001, at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
Funeral services were held
on Tuesday, April 10, at the United Methodist Church in Eldora, with
burial in the Eldora City Cemetery. Rev. Ann Lippencott officiated.
Catharine was born on October 4, 1921 at Waterloo, to Curtis and Ella Mae
Lane Corlett. She graduated from the Osage High School in 1939 and
attended Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls for one year.
She taught in several country schools and at Union during World War
II. On November 15, 1942, she married Carroll J. Hobson at the First
United Methodist Church at Eldora.
She was a member of the First
United Methodist Church in Eldora and the Rachel Circle.
She is survived by her husband, Carroll; three sons, Brian and wife,
Wanda of Eldora, Mark and wife, Janey of Eldora and Maurice and
wife, Leslie of Whitten; a daughter, Maureen Allan and husband,
John of Hampton; 10 grandchildren; and a sister, Charlene Carlisle
and husband, Darrel of Phoenix, Arizona.
She was preceded in death by
her parents.

Bonita Koch

Bonita Margaret Koch, 70, of Hampton, died of cancer at
her home on Saturday, April 7, 2001.
Funeral services were held
on Tuesday,
April 10, at the First United Methodist Church in Hampton, with
burial in the Hampton Cemetery. Rev. Eilbert Trusheim officiated.
Memorials may be directed to the Terrace Hill Foundation in Des
Moines.
Bonnie was born on March 22, 1931 in Hampton, to John and Mabel Mickley
Menefee. She graduated from the Hampton High School and attended
Hamilton Business College in Mason City. She worked as a legal
secretary before marrying Ed Koch and worked with him helping
manage their farm for over 30 years. She had a lifelong interest in
education, travel and community service. At age 45, she received her
degree from the North Iowa Area Community College.
Bonnie had traveled
to Venezuela, China, Europe and traveled the Trans-Siberian
Railroad from Vladovostok to Moscow. Her local service activities
were the Iowa Pork Producers, Daughters of the American Revolution,
American Legion Auxiliary, local and state 4-H, Franklin County's
History and Heritage Club, Terrace Hill docent work and her church.
She is survived by her husband, Ed; two sons, Gary of New Ulm,
Minnesota and Jeff of Hampton; one daughter, Patricia Koch Sofia who
is presently living in Bulgaria; and six grandchildren.

Faye L. Williamson, 87, of Hampton, formerly of Eldora,
died on Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Impatient
Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services will be
held on Friday, April 13, at
10:30 a.m., at the Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora. Burial will follow
in the Hampton Cemetery. There will be a visitation at the funeral
home on Friday, April 13, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the
service.
Faye was born on April 2, 1914, daughter of George E. and Rose (Rowsen)
Miller in rural Hampton, where she attended the Hansell Schools. She
was united in marriage to Carl Williamson on April 22, 1955, at the
Little Brown Church in Nashua. They made their home in Eldora where
they lived for their entire married lives and in January of 2001 she
moved to Hampton.
She was a member of the First United Methodist
Church in Eldora, was an avid seamstress and quilter and enjoyed
camping and fishing with her husband. She enjoyed her vegetable and
flower gardens.
She is survived by several cousins and friends and was preceded in
death by her parents and husband.

Annabelle J. Winters, 64, of rural Stratford, died
on
Easter Sunday, April 15, 2001, after a lengthy illness at the U.S.
Health Care in Fort Dodge.
Funeral services were held at
the St. Paul's Lutheran
Church in State Center, with burial in the Hillside Cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, Millard Winters of Stratford; a son,
Glen Winters and wife, Connie of Nevada; two daughters, Lori
Richardson and husband, Doyle of Webster City and Charlene Olson
and husband, Todd of Story City; three grandchildren; her mother,
Kathryn Henze; and a brother, Ron Henze, both of State Center.
She
was preceded in death by her father, Albert Henze.

Wendell Anders

Wendell D. Anders, 83, of Aplington, died
on Monday, April
16, 2001, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.
Funeral services were held
on
Thursday, April 19, at the First Reformed Church in Aplington, with
burial in the Wellsburg Reformed Cemetery. Military rites were
conducted by the Aplington AMVETS Post No. 102. Rev. Gerald Osland
officiated.
Wendell was born on January 25, 1918 near Hubbard, to Daniel and Martha Brinkmeyer Anders. He graduated from
the Radcliffe High School in 1936
and served in the United States Air Force in World War II for five
years as a mechanic. On January 25, 1947, he married Ivis Schmidt at
the Little Brown Church at Nashua. He worked for the Waterloo
Airport and John Deere Co. and later farmed south of Aplington. He
was also employed as a rural mail carrier, retiring in 1982.
He was
an active member of the First Reformed Church, a member of the
Aplington AMVETS and the Aplington Golf Club, where he worked as a
volunteer. He enjoyed playing softball, golfing and fishing in
Minnesota.
He is survived by a son, Charles Anders and wife, Teah of Arroyo
Grande, California; a daughter, Connie Huntrod and husband, Dale of
Altoona; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters,
Elaine Eller and husband, Homer and Shirley Ziebell, all of
Hubbard; and a brother, Henry Anders and wife, Wilma of Hubbard.
He
was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 1999; a nine-year
old son; two sisters; and two brothers.
The Schwartz Funeral Home of Aplington, was in charge of
the arrangements.

Judith Ann Tremmel, 52, of Eldora, died
on Tuesday, April 17,
2001, at the Grundy Center Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be
held on
Saturday, April 21, at 1:00 p.m., at the Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora,
with Pastor Steve Howe officiating.
Judith was born on November 1, 1948 in Geneseo, Illinois, to Harold and Avis Schmoll Rogers. On September 21, 1968, she married Larry Tremmel at the
Methodist Church in Denison. She attended Hawkeye Tech for nursing
until her illness forced her to stay at home.
She was a former Cub
Scout Leader and a member of the Order of Eastern Star.
She is survived by four children, Todd Louis of Clarinda, Heather
Kate of Eldora, Joshua Ian of Iowa Falls and Kate Leslie of Eldora;
five granddaughters; two brothers, Bruce Rogers and Kevin Bobbitt of
Fairfax, Virginia; and two sisters, Nancy Mahoney of Chicago and Janet Sidenstucker of Vail.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and
grandparents.
The Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora, is in charge of

Joseph Fraser

Joseph P. "Doc" Fraser, 77, of Lewistown, Montana,
died on Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at the Central Montana Medical Center in
Lewistown.
Memorial services were held on Friday, April 20, with inurnment in
the Lewistown City Cemetery.
Joe was born on November 11, 1923 at Hampton, to Dr. Leonard and Rebecca
Atkinson Fraser. He attended schools in Iowa Falls and moved to
California his junior year and graduated from the Pasadena High School
in 1941. He attended Pasadena Junior College, Colorado State College
and graduated from LSU Medical School in 1948. He served in the
United States Navy from 1943-48 during World War II and served in
the U.S. Air Force as acting flight surgeon and SAC survival and
rescue during the Korean War. On November 18, 1950, he married Carol
Birdwell. He was a family practitioner for 37 years and was a
50-year member of the Masonic Lodge and member of the Eagles Lodge.
He raised quarter horses and coached the Central Montana Wrestling
Club for many years.
He is survived by his wife; four children, Mike and Donna
Fraser, Steve and Judy Fraser, Karen and Mitch Marx and Kevin
Fraser, all of Lewistown; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded
in death by his parents.

Mary M. Smith, 89, of Mason City, died
on Wednesday, April
18, 2001, at the Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City.
A Funeral
Mass will be held on Saturday, April 21, at 10:30 a.m., at the Holy
Family Catholic Church in Mason City, with burial in the Elmwood St.
Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.
Mary was born on February 20, 1912 in Mason City, to James and Rose
Gallagher Martin. She grew up in Mason City and attended the St. Joseph
Academy. In September 1936, she married Leonard Smith and they were
later divorced. She was a lifelong resident of Mason City and a
member of the Holy Family Catholic Church and St. Gregory Circle.
She has resided at the Good Shepherd Care Center for two years.
She is survived by three daughters, Mary Martin, Pat Smith and
Barbara Kline, all of Mason City; a son, Patrick and his wife,
Carol of Ames; eight grandchildren, some from Iowa Falls; and
several great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; and a son, Austin.

St. John's United Methodist Church in Radcliffe, with burial in the
Radcliffe Cemetery. Friends may call at the Boeke Funeral Home in
Radcliffe, on Sunday, April 22, where the family will be present from 6-8:00 p.m.

Tillie Pearce, 94, of Iowa
Falls, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, April 26, 2001, at the
Lutheran Nursing Home, Mendota, Illinois.
Funeral services will be
held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, at the Linn's Funeral Home,
Iowa Falls, with burial in the Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the services on
Saturday at the funeral home.
Tillie Mein, was born on May 6, 1906 at her parents home, rural Ackley,
Iowa. She attended rural county schools. She was married to George
Clifford Pearce at Iowa Falls, Iowa. She was a homemaker.
Tillie Pearce is survived by one son, Robert Pearce of Iowa Falls;
one daughter, Doris Aldinger of Ackley; eight grandchildren;
eleven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two
sisters, Hielda Perkins of Eldora and Zena Everette of Cabot,
Arkansas; and one brother, Jake Mein of Ottumwa.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jasper and Gertrude Mein;
her husband, George Pearce; one daughter, Lillian Mitterer; four
sisters; and four brothers.

Gordon Stapleton, 62, of Hampton, died
on Thursday, April 26,
2001, at his home.
Funeral services will be held at a later date.
Gordon was born on September 10, 1938 at Ottumwa, to Gladys Halting. He
was raised in Devil Lake, North Dakota and attended school there. He served
in the Korean conflict and on July 8, 1988, he married Karen Nargang
at Dysart. They lived in Waterloo where he was employed at
Chamberlins before moving to Hampton.
He is survived by his wife, Karen of Hampton; four daughters, Donna Bogunovich of Big Horn, Montana, Peggy Stapleton of Montana, Sue
Stapleton and Kathy Schildwachter, both of Dysart; two stepdaughters,
Lori Flood of Denver and Tammy Cole of Waterloo; two stepsons, Ed
Hansen of Des Moines and Scott Hansen of Hampton; and 21
grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home of Hampton, was in charge of
the arrangements.

Waldo, 67, of Iowa Falls, died of heart failure on Friday,
April 27, 2001, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa
Falls.
Funeral services were held
on Monday, April 30, at the Linn's
Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be held following the
services.
Darlene Morgan, was born on July 25, 1933, to Everett and Mary Walton Morgan,
in Houston, Texas. She graduated from the Iowa Falls High School. She
was employed as a tax preparer, bookkeeper and legal assistant with
the Whitesell Law Firm, Iowa Falls.
Darlene was a member of the
Business and Professional Women of Iowa Falls and several bowling
leagues.
She is survived by two sons, David Kruger and wife, Carol
of Clearwater, Florida and Dwight Kruger and wife, Patty of Berrian
Center, Michigan; two daughters, Tracy Brannick and husband, Billy of
Iowa Falls and Tonya Bennett and husband, Jimmie Jr. of Bondurant;
12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a sister, Derita Jones
of Seattle, Washington.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and one
son, Troy Waldo in 1987.

Jennie De Vries

Jennie De Vries, 97, of Aplington, formerly of Ackley,
died on Friday, April 27, 2001, at the Maple Manor Care Center, Aplington.
Funeral services were held
on Tuesday, May 1, at the West Friesland Church,
rural Ackley, with burial in the church cemetery. Pastor Randy Crane
officiated.
Jennie was born on June 29, 1903 near Wellsburg, to John and Johanna Riebkes Kurtzleben Van Loh. She attended
the German Township No. 8
country school. In March 1921, she moved with her parents to
Wellsburg and on December 22, 1925, married Jake De Vries in Kesley.
They farmed in Hardin and Butler Counties and in 1938 they moved to
a farm in Grundy County. After the death of her husband in 1986, she
moved to Aplington.
She was a member of the West Friesland
Presbyterian Church, rural Ackley and the Ladies Aide, later called
WIC. She enjoyed sewing and embroidering until her eyesight failed.
She is survived by two daughters, Dorothy Stubbe and her husband,
Christie of Aplington and Louella Condie and husband, Donald of
El Centro, California; two sons, Louis De Vries and wife, Janet of
Linn Creek, Missouri and Richard De Vries and wife, Linda of Wiscasset,
Maine; a daughter-in-law, Laura De Vries of Ackley; 15
grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; her husband, Jake; a son, Arnold; six brothers; and
a sister.
The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home of Wellsburg, was in charge of
the arrangements.

Amy Lynn Jass, 20, of Van Wert, died on Monday, April 30,
2001, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, of
complications of injuries suffered in an automobile accident on
April 25 near Osceola.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 5, at the Kale
Funeral Home in Osceola, with burial in the Maple Hill Cemetery there.
Pastor J.R. Wheeler officiated.
Amy was born in Corydon on March 24, 1981, to John and Pam Jass and
had lived in Clarke County most of her life, graduating in 2000 from
Clark Schools. She worked in telemarketing for Komodo Communications
in Des Moines.
She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in
Osceola and she enjoyed music.
She is survived by her parents, John and Pam Jass; and a sister,
Carrie, all of Van Wert; a brother, William of Murray; and her
grandparents, William and Doris Jass of Alden.
