Dorothy L. Marty, 1901-2001

November 14, 2001

Dorothy L. Marty, of LeMars, formerly of LuVerne, passed away on Thursday, November 1, 2001, at the Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in LeMars, at the age of 100.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, November 7, at 10:30 a.m., at the LuVerne United Methodist Church in LuVerne. Interment followed in the LuVerne Cemetery.

There will be a memorial service at 10:45 a.m., on Friday, November 16, at the Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in LeMars.

Dorothy (Dora) Lena Merkle, was born on July 25, 1901 at Van Cleve, to George and Ann Marie (Seitz) Merkle. The family lived in Oskaloosa and Mingo before moving to a farm near LuVerne in 1910. Dora finished her education in the LuVerne area and assisted her family with farming.

On February 17, 1927, Dora and Henry A. Marty were united in marriage at LuVerne. The couple made their home on a farm near LuVerne. Henry and Dora retired from farming in 1959 and moved to LuVerne.

Dora was an active members of the LuVerne United Methodist Church and participated in many of LuVerne's Community Clubs and activities. Henry passed away in 1983, and Dora remained in LuVerne until 1991 when she moved to LeMars to be closer to her sons, Howard and Wayne. She moved to the Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in LeMars in 1996.

Survivors include five children, Vera Link and her husband, Howard Marty and wife, Wayne Marty and wife, Carroll Marty and wife and Marie Hargrove and husband. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; a sister, Wilma Paulson; and two sisters-in-law.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Henry; seven brothers, Herman, Earnest, Louis, Carl, Walter, Fred and Elmer; three sisters, Katherine Merkle, Esther Merkle and Carolyn Hefty; two infant grandchildren; and an infant great-granddaughter.

The family wishes memorials be directed to the LuVerne Methodist Church, American Heart Association or the donor's favorite charity.

Marie Wright, 1909-2001

November 14, 2001

Marie Wright, 92, of Britt, died on Monday, November 5, 2001, at the Westview Care Center in Britt.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, November 8, at the Ewing Funeral Home in Britt. Pastor Susan Detwiler officiated. Music was provided by organist, Tammy Johnson. Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery. 

Honorary casket bearers were Tony Wright, Paul Christenson, Cord Christenson, Todd Christenson, Bill Christenson, Carey Christenson and Tad Christenson. Casket bearers were Jesse Berhow, James Berhow, Christopher Kabrick, Chad Tue, Jason Christenson and Travis Christenson.

Marie, the daughter of Rasme and Nancy Veldhouse Christensen, was born on June 7, 1909 in Kanawha. She attended country school near the family farm home, and graduated from the Kanawha High School. 

She was united in marriage with Carl Christenson in 1928. The couple made their home in Des Moines before moving back to Kanawha. She was united in marriage with Leslie Wright on July 21, 1945 in Britt. They made their home in Britt, where Marie was employed by the Britt Schools in the hot lunch program. She later worked for Winnebago Industries until her retirement in 1975.

Survivors include her children, Carl V. Christenson of Moline, Illinois, Randy Wright and his wife, Ramona of Britt, Rhonda Berhow and her husband, Eugene of Stanhope and Ramona Kabrick and her husband, David of Britt; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.    

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leslie on June 26, 1979; two grandsons, Casey Wright and Scott Christenson.

Ann Hinders, 1912-2001

November 14, 2001

Ann Hinders, 89, of Britt, died on Thursday, November 8, 2001, at the Westview Care Center, in Britt.

Funeral services were held on Monday, November 12, at the United Methodist Church in Britt. The Rev. Robert Dodge officiated. Music was provided by Tammy Johnson who accompanied soloist, Donna Smidt. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery. Casket bearers were Mike Noble, Dave Brower, Dan Smith, Clarence Seebeck, Jim Smith, Jr. and Charles Ward. The Ewing Funeral Home of Britt was in charge of the arrangements.

Ann, the daughter of David and Druscila Wise Noble was born on January 20, 1912 in Clear Creek, Illinois. The family moved to the Titonka area where Ann attended school, graduating in 1927.

She was united in marriage to Martin Hinders on December 22, 1928 in Fairmont, Minnesota. To this union, three children were born, twin girls, Doris and Deloris in 1929 and son, Tom in 1931. The couple made their home and farmed in the Woden/Wesley area for a number of years before moving to Erin Township where they farmed until their retirement in 1964. Debbie was adopted by her grandparents in 1971 after living with them since birth.

Mrs. Hinders was a member of the United Methodist Church in Britt, Eastern Star, Lioness, American Legion Auxiliary, and VFW Auxiliary. She liked to travel, paint pillowcases and enjoyed going to trap shooting with her husband.

Survivors include one son, Tom Hinders and family of Ames; one daughter, Debbie Dirksen and her husband, Rick of Britt; numerous grand-children, great grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and special niece, Mickey Noble of Britt.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Martin on August 19, 1975; daughter, Deloris on February 5, 1978; daughter, Doris on September 11, 2001; and Charles (June) Noble on December 29, 1972.
