Donald
L. Flugum, 76, of Lake Mills, died on Saturday, January 1, 2005, at the Lake
Mills Care Center in Lake Mills.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January
4, at the Winnebago Lutheran Church, rural Leland, with Rev. Bill Peters
officiating. Burial was in the Winnebago Lutheran Church Cemetery, with
military honors conducted by the Leland VFW Post #6161. The Mittelstadt Funeral
Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Donald L. Flugum, was born in Winnebago County, on August
15, 1928, the son of Charles and Myrtle (Brunsvold) Flugum. Don received his
education through the eighth grade in a country school house and attended
the Leland High School. He worked for the postal department in Des Moines for a
time following his schooling. Don entered the United States Army in May of
1946 and served in Korea before being honorably discharged in November of
1947. On July 9, 1950, Don was united in marriage with Majella Schnebly of
Thompson, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple farmed the family
farm for 47 years before moving to Lake Mills. Don continued to farm for
three more years, making a total of 50 crops before finally retiring.
In
addition to farming, a huge part of Don's life was his faith. He was
baptized and confirmed at the Winnebago Lutheran Church and was a life-long
member. He was also a life-long member of the Leland VFW Post #6161. Don had
also been employed by the Stamp Mill Co., Helgeson Motor Co. and he enjoyed
delivering Winnebago motor homes for a number of years. Don and Majella
enjoyed traveling and have been to all 50 states and most providences of
Canada. He enjoyed visiting with family and friends and never lost his sense
of humor.
Those surviving to cherish his memory are his wife of 54
years, Majella; a daughter, Linda Sharp and her husband, Clete of Cedar
Rapids; two sons, Alan Flugum and his wife, Deanna and Scott Flugum and his
wife, Joan, all of Lake Mills; grandchildren, Amber Smith and her husband,
Garrett of Cedar Rapids, Alison Flugum of Lake Mills, Brandon Flugum of
Britt, Michael Flugum of Lake Mills, Lucas Flugum of Lake Mills and Brad Koppen and Marisa Koppen of Lake Mills; and a great-grandson, Slade Sifuentes of Lake Mills.
Don was preceded in death by his parents and
grandparents.

Catherine (Cathy) Mary Delzer, 56, died on Saturday, January 8,
2005, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
A Funeral Mass was held on
Friday, January 14, at the St. James Catholic Church in Forest City, with Rev. Jerry
Blake officiating. Burial was in the St. James Catholic Cemetery in Forest City, with
the
Petersen Lund Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
Catherine "Cathy" Mary, the daughter of Orville and Mary (Mayhew) Marks, was
born in Mitchell, South Dakota, on May 4, 1948. Cathy received her education in
Mitchell and graduated from the Notre Dame High School in 1966. She continued her
education at Springfield State College and later worked in the office at General
Motors Equipment in Mitchell. On May 23, 1970, she was united in marriage with Darryl Delzer. The family moved to Forest City in 1972, when Darryl began working at
Winnebago Industries. Cathy worked for a couple of years at Bill's Red Owl.
She
was a member of the St. James Catholic Church and an active "prayer-chain" partner.
She was a dedicated Elvis fan and enjoyed camping trips and finding a bargain at
a garage sale. But her most treasured times were spent with her children and
grandchildren. Cathy is survived by her husband, Darryl Delzer
of Forest City; her parents, Orville and Mary Marks of Mitchell, South Dakota;
her children, Monica Solberg and husband, Darwin of Forest City, Melissa Delzer
and fiancée, Shawn Plymesser of Lake Mills, Michele Badker and husband, Curt of
Clear Lake and Mark Delzer of Forest City; grandchildren,
Michaela Delzer, Mitchell Solberg, Dylan Solberg and baby Badker, soon to be
born; her special friends; her dedicated prayer friends and her closest friends.

Dorothy Michaelson, 89

Dorothy M. Michaelson, age 89, of Olathe, Kansas, formerly of
Forest City, died on Sunday, January 9, 2005, at the Olathe Good Samaritan Center in
Olathe.
Graveside services were held on Thursday, January 13, in the Oakland Cemetery in
Forest City, with Rev. Lee Laaveg, Pastor of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest
City, officiating. The Petersen Lund Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Dorothy Marie Michaelson, was born in New Ulm, Minnesota, on April 20, 1915, the
daughter of Eugene and Elsie (Werdan) Nelson. As a young child, she moved with
her family to Forest City where she grew up and attended school, graduating from
the
Forest City High School. She continued her education and received her Nursing
Degree. She worked in hospitals in Belmond and Iowa City. On September 23, 1945,
she married Reuben Michaelson. The couple made their home in Forest City where
Dorothy cared for her home and family and raised their daughter.
She was an
active member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City. In 1994, she moved to
Olathe, Kansas, to be closer to her family. Failing health forced her to enter
the Olathe Good Samaritan Center where she spent her last years comfortably with
the best of care.
Dorothy loved to crochet and do needle-point. Her artistic
sensibilities led her to do some oil painting and she held a deep appreciation
for rocks and minerals and was an avid gem collector. She loved to garden and
always enjoyed an enthusiastic game of bingo with her friends.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Toni Ochs of Olathe, Kansas; two
granddaughters, Annie and Kelly Ochs, both of Olathe.
Dorothy was preceded in
death by her parents; her husband, Reuben; two sisters, Dolores Nelson and Ramona Rensink; and a daughter, Dolores.

John Liska, 81

John J. Liska, 81, of Hayfield, died on Wednesday, January 12,
2005, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
Funeral services were
held on Saturday, January 15, at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan, with Fr.
Michael Schueller officiating. Lectors were Mike Liska and Tom Lucke. Music was
provided by organist, Mary Kopacek who accompanied the church choir. Ushers were
Marv Ricke and Melvin Wellik. Casket bearers were Travis Jorgensen, Kelly Bohl,
Cody Liska, Cory Lucke, Jay Olson, Missy Liska and Emily Lucke. Inurnment will
be at a later date in the St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Duncan. The Cataldo Funeral Home
in Garner was in charge of the arrangements.
John Junior, the son
of John Anton and Mary Eleanore (Chizek) Liska, was born on April 29, 1923, on a
farm north of Duncan. John attended the Hayfield Consolidated School. On January 23,
1946, he was united in marriage with Agnes Brcka at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic
Church. The couple lived in Duncan where John was employed at the Brcka General
Store. They later moved to a farm near Crystal Lake where he farmed and did
custom work in the area. In 1967, they moved to their home in Hayfield. John
also had a trucking business, which he operated until 1984.
He enjoyed his
family, fishing, gardening, playing cards, old time music and dancing. John was
a member of the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church.
He is survived by
his wife, Agnes of Hayfield; seven children, Dan Liska of Ft. Dodge and his two
children, Jamie and Missy; Linda (Tom) Lucke of Lancaster, Wisconsin and their three
children, Ryan, Emily and Cory; Mary (Rick) Bohl of Cedaredge, Colorado and their
two children, Kelly and Teri; Beverly (John) Olson of Forest City and their
three children, Angie, Jay, Rhonda; Jim (Jackie) Liska of Kingman, Arizona and
their son, Travis; Mike (Carla) Liska of Britt and their two sons, Cody and
Andy; and Larry (Rose) Liska of Wimberley, Texas and their son, Noah; four great-grandchildren, Remington, Austin, Natalie and Trevor; two brothers, Walter Liska
of Sun City, California and Cletus (Marjorie) Liska of Clear
Lake; two sisters, Rosemary Schroeder of Anaheim, California and Barbara (Lewis) Nedved of Garner; a
sister-in-law, Marian Liska of Albert Lea, Minnespta; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Leo and Donald Liska;
sisters, Veronica Thada and Doris Fosdick; and other relatives.

Rev. Emil Martinson, 84

Rev.
Emil Caroll Martinson, age 84, of Appleton, Wisconsin, formerly of Decorah, died on
Wednesday, January 12, 2005, at the St. Elizabeth Hospital, in Appleton,
following a short illness.
Funeral services were held on Monday, January 17, at the Decorah
Lutheran Church in Decorah, with Rev. James Glesne, Rev. Bryan Robertson and
Rev. R. David Berg officiating. Organist, Kathy Murray accompanied congregational
hymns. The Luren Singers and Dave Judisch also provided musical selections.
Burial was on Wednesday, January 19, in the Sarpsborg Cemetery in Dalton,
Minnesota, with Rev. George Grage. Casket bearers were Patsy Martinson, Sonja
Juffer, Lisa Martinson and Tim Martinson. The
Schluter-Balik Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
He was born on May 13, 1920, to Tollef and Ingeborg
Martinson in rural Dalton, Minnesota. After graduating from Augsburg College in 1943,
he served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945. After release from
military service, he attended Augsburg Seminary and was ordained into the
Lutheran ministry in 1949. He married Jeanette Solvei Jacobson on August 28,
1948.
During his career in the ministry, he served as
pastor at St. Olaf and Pukwana Lutheran churches, Pukwana, South Dakota (1949-1953);
Trinity, First and Napoleon Lutheran Churches, Kintyre, North Dakota (1953-1957);
Argyle and Adams Lutheran churches, Argyle, Wisconsin (1957-1964); Big Canoe and
Highland Lutheran Churches in rural Decorah (1964-1974), St. Paul's Lutheran in
Irwin (1974-1981) and Beaver Creek and Faith Lutheran Churches near Forest City (1981-1987).
Following retirement in 1987, Emil and
Jeannette Martinson lived and worked at Holder Village, a church retreat center
in the Cascade Mountain region of Washington State, for a year before returning
to Decorah in 1988, where they lived until moving to Appleton, Wisconsin in 2004.
Emil’s parish ministry was guided by his faith and marked by his abiding
interest in people and music. Visitation was a favorite part of his ministry.
Following retirement, this interest motivated him to serve as visitation pastor
with the St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon and Decorah Lutheran Church through
the late 90s. His interest in music resulted in continuing involvement in two
family singing groups, the Martinson Family Singers and "His Gang", who both
performed in area churches and toured throughout the Midwest. Emil was a
lifetime member of the Luren Singing Society and accompanied them on several
trips to Norway. Emil and Jeanette are members of the Decorah Lutheran Church.
Emil’s survivors include his wife, Jeanette
Martinson of Appleton, Wisconsin; a son, Timothy Martinson and wife, Joanna Lynch
of
Ithaca, New York; daughters, Patsy Martinson of Decorah, Sonja Juffer and husband,
Kirk of Shorewood, Wisconsin and Lisa Martinson and husband, Grant Nelson of Appleton,
Wisconsin; a daughter-in-law, Kate Ruane Martinson of Decorah; seven grandchildren,
James Kristoffer Martinson, Gustaf Herman Juffer, Robin Ann Martinson, Gudrun
Juffer, Helen Juffer, Emily Laurel Nelson and Wren Lynch Martinson;
sisters-in-law, Helen Irene (Clarence) Martinson of Fergus Falls, Minnesota and
Helen Harriett (Milton) Martinson of Ashby, Minnesota.
Emil was preceded in death by his son,
Stephen Charles Martinson of Decorah in 2001; his parents; a sister, Ida T. Haukos and her husband, Orton;
and brothers, Milton and Clarence Martinson.

Reuben Sandell, 89

Reuben Eric Sandell, 89, of Thompson, died
on Thursday, January 13,
2005, at the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center.
Funeral services were
held on Monday, January 17, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Thompson, with Rev. Ted Gullixson officiating. Organist, Cyndy Johnson accompanied congregational hymns.
Special music was by the Zion Lutheran Choir. Casket bearers were Roger Stenberg,
Roger Olsen, Irvin Olsen, David Sandell, Ron Sandell and Roger Sandell.
Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson, with the Winter Funeral Home in
charge of the arrangements. Reuben Eric Sandell, the son of John &
Johanna (Nelson) Sandell, was born on March 15, 1915 near Boone. In 1917, at the
age of two, he moved with his family to the family farm near Thompson. Reuben
graduated from the Thompson High School and worked on the family farm until his
retirement and when his health declined in June 2003. On December 16, 1967, he
was united in marriage to Lulu B. DeVries Torgeson at Garner.
Reuben was a
member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Thompson. He enjoyed golfing, fishing,
baseball and watching all sports on television.
Reuben is
survived by a step-daughter, Patricia Dahlen of Forest City; four step-grandchildren; a step-grandson-in-law; nine step-great-grandchildren; two
sisters-in-law, Ellen Sandell of Forest City and Eleanor Miller of Lake Mills;
and 12 nieces and nephews. Reuben was preceded in death by his
parents; his wife; his brothers, Lawrence, Leonard and Clarence; and his sisters,
Esther McCoy, Mildred Lehman, Elna Ealy, Olga Stiffler and Nina Svela.

Velma
A. Jefson, 86, died on Tuesday, January 18, 2005, at the Good Samaritan Center in
Forest City.
Funeral services were held on Friday, January 21, at the Calvary Baptist
Church in Forest City, with Rev. Doug Farrell officiating. Burial was in the Madison
Township Cemetery in Forest City, with the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in charge of
the arrangements.
Velma was born on a farm south of Forest
City, on August 11, 1918, the daughter of Seth B. and Edith (Rowland) Durant. She
attended rural school near her home and graduated from the Forest City High School.
She continued her education at Northwestern College in St. Paul, Minnesota, where
she received her Certificate of Business. On May 17, 1939, she was united in
marriage with Lyle Jefson at the Calvary Baptist Church in Forest City. The couple
made their home in Parkersburg for several years before returning to the family
farm in Forest City. They spent their remaining married lives here until
entering the Good Samaritan Center together in January of 1994.
Velma was an
active member of the Calvary Baptist Church. She was a life-long nursery worker
there and loved to care for young children. She was an avid reader, enjoyed
solving jigsaw puzzles and the newspaper Jumbles and loved to just putter
around. Velma was devoted to her family — they were her life. An eternal
optimist, she saw the best in everyone and always had a smile for you. Her
children remember the steadfast enduring faith that carried her through all of
life's challenges with a quiet certainty.
Velma is survived by her children, Lynn Jefson and wife, Mary Ann, James Jefson and wife, Clarene, Lots Kraakevik and
husband, Keith, Sylvia Freeby and husband, Ken, Paul Jefson and wife, Karen, Floyd Jefson and wife, Vicki, Joyce Jefson, Judy Kuns and husband, Stuart, Elaine Meyer
and husband, Stan, Bonnie Knapper and husband, Jerry, Kirk Jefson and wife, Julie,
Kyle Jefson, Kathy Prolow and husband, Val; 36
grandchildren; and 42 great-grandchildren.
Velma was preceded in death by her husband,
Lyle; her parents; her brothers, Don and Duane Durant; her daughter and
son-in-law, Ellen and Don Lehto; and a grandson and granddaughter, Kris and
Heather.

Lester
E. Burtness, 95, of Fertile, died on Friday, January 21, 2005, at the Muse-Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 25, at the
Fertile Lutheran Church, with Rev. Clarence Baalson officiating. Burial was in
the
Brush Point Cemetery in rural Fertile, with the Petersen Lund Funeral Home of Forest
City in charge of the arrangements.
Lester was born on the ancestral family
farm in Fertile Township, Worth County, Iowa, on December 14, 1909, the son of
Gerhard and Isabell (Holmen) Burtness. He received his education in a rural school
and in Northwood. After graduating from high school in Hanlontown, he moved to
the Fertile area to work. He worked for a farmer south of Fertile for a time
before working on a gas pipeline crew. They started laying pipe in the Winnebago
River and Lester worked with the company across most of Worth County. Wherever
there was water to cross, Lester was there digging. He also worked with the
Chicago Northwestern Railroad, replacing ties and leveling tracks. On November
7, 1931, he married Doris Zobel. In 1937, Lester went to work for the Fertile
Lumber Company. In 1968, he began working for Winnebago Industries and
semi-retired seven years later in 1975. For three more years he worked part-time
in the Winnebago Drafting Department until finally retiring.
Lester was always active in the community
of Fertile. In 1950, he became a member of the town council and later served four
years as Mayor of Fertile. He was a member of the volunteer fire department for
many years, serving as assistant fire chief and in 1974 was voted in as
Secretary, a position he held until retirement. In 1952, the Fertile Lions Club
was started and Lester was a charter member. The numerous projects and
city-betterment activities this club was involved with made Lester very proud.
He was an active member of the Fertile Lutheran Church and loved spending time with
his family.
Lester is survived by his children, Janice
(Spence) Abrams of Clear Lake, JoAnn Bailey of Clear Lake, Lance (Diane)
Burtness of Fertile and Larry (Janet) Burtness of Clear Lake; 15 grandchildren; 31
great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and sister, IvaNell May
of California.
Lester was preceded in death by his wife,
Doris in January 2000; his parents; two sisters, Dorothy and Gladys; and one
brother, Gerald.

Edwards, 83

Marian L. Edwards, 83, died
on Saturday, January
22, 2005, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston.
Funeral services were held
on Tuesday, January
25, at the Resurrection Lutheran Church in Ankeny, with interment in the West Bend
Cemetery.
Marian graduated from the Mallard High School
in 1940. She attended AIB in Des Moines on a scholarship. She was united in
marriage to Leslie Edwards in 1942 and lived in Emmetsburg and Forest City. She
worked at Winnebago Industries for 25 years and was the first woman foreman.
Marian loved life and was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She loved
gardening, her grandchildren and spending time with her family. Marian had a
great sense of humor and will always be remembered for her quick wit.
She is survived by daughters, Gloria (Tom)
Craft of Phoenix, Arizona, Rebecca (Tim) Heidenwirth of Greene and Tammy (Jerry) Den Hartog of Clear Lake; sons, David (Carol) Edwards of Denver, Colorado
and Robert (Kris)
Edwards of Ankeny; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; brothers, Jim Frohling, Jack Frohling, Merlyn Frohling
and Lon Frohling; and sisters, Florence Warnke
and Jeanie Jorgensen.
She was preceded in death by her husband;
her parents, Henry and Gladys Frohling; and brothers, Robert and Mike Frohling.

Opal Juliet Fisher, 96, died on Wednesday, December 22, 2004, at the
Charter House.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 5, at
the Zumbro Lutheran
Church in Rochester, Minnesota, with Rev. Gary E. Benson officiating. Burial will be
in the Oakland Cemetery in Forest City, at 3:00 p.m., with the Ranfranz and Vine Funeral
Homes in charge of the arrangements.
Opal Juliet (Rusley) Fisher, daughter of Olaf and Anna (Ellestad)
Rusley, was born on June 15, 1908 in Scarville. She moved from the farm in
Scarville to Lake Mills and Buckingham, where Opal's father operated a store
together with the post office. Moving to Forest City, Opal graduated from high
school in 1927. After graduating, she attended Waldorf College where she sang in
the choir. On July 9, 1930, Opal married Donald W. Fisher at the Little Brown
Church. The couple later resided in Mason City, St. Paul, Minnesota and Rochester,
Minnesota, where they owned and operated Fisher Oil Company and Fisher Auto Parts for
many years.
Opal was a member of the Zumbro Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday
School and was involved in the church circle. She was the President of WELCA and
volunteered at Samaritan Bethany. She loved gardening, traveling and spending
time at their lake home in Nisswa.
Opal is survived by two sons, Delmar (Beverly) Fisher of
Nisswa, Minnesota and Rev. Wilbur (Jean) Fisher of Fargo, North Dakota; a daughter, Karen
(Robert) White of Rochester, Minnesota; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an
infant daughter, Donna; two sisters, Evelyn Underwood and Sylvia Simonson; and a
brother, Kenneth Rusley.

Thelma Bannon, 82, died
on Saturday, January 22, 2005.
Funeral services were held
at the St. John Lutheran Church, Ellisville, Missouri on Tuesday, January 25. Burial was
at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri.
Thelma Theresa Rusley Bannon, was
born on September 27, 1922 in Winnebago County, to Tom and Tilda Rusley. She was
baptized and confirmed at the Winnebago Lutheran Church of rural Lake
Mills. She was educated in the rural schools of Winnebago County and graduated
in 1940 from the Lake Mills High School. Subsequent to that she was a nursing
student at the Lutheran Deaconess Hospital in Chicago for three years and worked in
military hospitals in Illinois and Montana. In 1948, she married John "Jack" Bannon in Chicago. The Brannon’s lived in the Chicago area for over 30 years and
raised three children there, Tom, Patti and Debbie. When all three children
ended up living in Missouri, the Brannon’s moved from Illinois to Missouri to
the area west of St. Louis.
Thelma is
survived by her daughters, Patti and Dave Neil, Debbie and Mark Weingarth; son,
Tom and Marquitta Bannon; grandchildren, Steven Neil, Matt Neil, Ryan Brown and
Lisa Weingarth; two brothers, Kermit Rusley of Leland and Stanley Rusley of Lake
Mills; a sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Jess Chase of Mason City; and
numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her
husband, Jack who died on November 4, 1999; her parents; three sisters; and one
brother.

Pearl Esther (Wirtjes) Hertzke, 89, died
on Tuesday, January 25,
2005, at the Lutz Wing Nursing Home in Fairmont, Minnesota.
Funeral services were held on
Friday, January 28, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lakota, with Rev. Marino Melstead
officiating. Burial was in the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Lakota, with the Winter
Funeral Home of Buffalo Center in charge of the arrangements.
Pearl Esther (Wirtjes) Hertzke, the daughter of John and
Laura (Scott) Wirtjes, was born on August 15, 1915 in Kossuth County. She grew up
on a farm and attended and graduated from the Ledyard High School. Following
training at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, she began teaching in a small
rural school. On August 12, 1936, Pearl married Raymond Hertzke. In 1941, they
established Hertzke's Grocery and despite time and child care restraints, Pearl
spent many days and nights working side by side with Ray for 25 years. Upon
retirement, they enjoyed traveling and gardening and always offered and helped
their children with business and home projects. Pearl and Ray had six children.
A devoted mother, Pearl cared for her family and others with calm dignity and
graciousness. Her children and grandchildren benefited from her loving support
and encouragement, knowing that she would help with school projects and be there
for special events. Preparing for the holidays, birthdays and family gatherings
brought her much pleasure and there were always baked goods and fresh garden
vegetables to share. Even the birds and little animals benefited from her
concern and care. Her devotion to family and community resulted in on-going
service activities at church and community functions.
An avid reader, Pearl
served on the Lakota Library Board. She loved nature, flowers and trees, and as
an officer and member of the Lakota Garden Club, Pearl enjoyed pursuing
community beautification efforts.
Left to cherish her memory are five of her children and their
families, Keith and Karen Hertzke of Fairmont, Minnesota, Shelda Beener of
Coralville, Illona and David Boekelman of Lakota, Nyla and Paul Vanourny of
Marion and Bruce and Jan Hertzke of Forest City; 15 grandchildren; 28
great-grandchildren; and a sister, Irene Petersen of Granada, Minnesota.
Pearl was preceded in death by her parents; her loving
husband, Raymond; and infant son, Neil; an infant grandson, Brian; two sisters,
Mabel and Clara; and her brother, Jack.

John Mathahs, 64, died
on Wednesday, January 26, 2005, at the Rochester
Methodist Hospital.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 29, at the First Baptist
Church in Forest City, with Pastor Larry Kidwell officiating. Interment was in
the
Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson, with the Winter Funeral Home in charge of
the arrangements. Organist, Carol Tweeten and pianist accompanied congregational
hymns and selections by three Jims and a Tim. Casket bearers were Dennis
Mattison, Alfred Mayland, Vic Matthias, Raymond Hagen, Gary Shropshire and Brent
Winter. Honorary bearers were his grandchildren and great-grandson.
John Mathahs, son of Harry and Bertha (Furst) Mathahs, was
born on April 13, 1940 at Wesley. He attended school at Wesley, Ledyard, Lakota,
Rake and graduated from the Thompson High School in 1958. On April 23, 1960,
John was united in marriage to Carol Graff at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.
The couple first lived on an acreage east of Thompson and John drove a cement
truck for Thompson Ready Mix before moving to Forest City. There he worked in
the bakery and at a chicken processing plant. John then worked as a farm hand
near Klemme and Britt. In 1964, the young family moved back to Thompson and they
began to farm. They moved to their home place in 1968.
John was at home on
the farm and enjoyed life the most there. He enjoyed the many day trips with the
family since the chores weren't far away. During the mid 70s, he and Carol
enjoyed snowmobiling with their friends. John also enjoyed cooking, and the
family enjoyed his chili the most. Most of all, he supported his children and
dearly loved his grandchildren.
His memory will be cherished by his wife, Carol of Thompson;
his five children, Julie Olson and husband, Tim of Thompson, Jeff and wife, Laurie
of Garner, James and special friend, Lisa of Ellsworth, Jay and wife, Gwen of
Thompson and Joe and special friend, Sarah Koch of Thompson; eight
grandchildren; one great-grandson; two step-grandchildren; his sister, Dorothy
and husband, Clarence Heitland of Mason City; a brother, Keith and wife, Virginia
of Las Vegas; sister-in-law, Sue Mathahs of Thompson; many nieces and nephews; and
by his loyal friend, Duke.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother,
Dale Mathahs.

Muriel
Strand, 94, died on Friday, January 28, 2005, at the Good Samaritan Center in
Forest City.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 1, at the Immanuel Lutheran
Church in Forest City, with Rev. Barb Spaulding officiating. Burial was in
the
Oakland Cemetery in Forest City, with the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in charge of
the arrangements.
Muriel P. Strand, was born on
July 12, 1910, in Swan Lake Township near Morris, Minnesota, the daughter of
Andrew and Alice (Larson) Strand. She was baptized and confirmed at the Scandia
Lutheran Free Church in Cyrus, Minnesota. Muriel attended rural school and
graduated from the Morris High School in 1927. She continued her education at
Business College in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Muriel began working as a secretary for
the St. Cloud School District, where she met her future husband, Arthur W.
Strand, who was from Harmony, Minnesota. The couple were married at Muriel's home
on August 17, 1935. They moved to Canton, South Dakota, where Arthur was the
Principal
of Augustana Academy. In 1946, the family moved to Forest City and Arthur
began working as a Professor and Business Manager at Waldorf
College.
Muriel was an active member of
the Immanuel Lutheran Church,
participating in Do Day, circle and Ladies Aid. She sang in the senior choir
at Immanuel, taught Sunday School and worked in the alumni office at
Waldorf College. Muriel loved to do handwork and crochet. She wove over
4,000 rugs, made soap and quilts for missions and knitted winter hats for
children for RSVP. She was a member of the Art Club, the Kum-Along Club and
has served as a den mother for the Cub Scouts. Muriel loved to play games
and Scrabble was a favorite.
Muriel is survived by her
children, Alien Strand of Forest City, Corrine Mix of Chisago City, Minnesota,
Howard Strand of Milltown, Wisconsin and James Strand and his wife, Carol of
Chatfield, Minnesota; grandchildren, Heidi Mix, Sarah Weber and
husband, Chris, Amy Mix, Emma Strand and Carrie Strand; two
great-grandchildren, Luke and Mason Weber; four sisters-in-law, Helen
Strand and Marion Carlson, both of Cedar, Minnesota, Cecelia Strand of Morris,
Minnesota and Elizabeth Reishus residing in Florida; and nieces and nephews.
Muriel was preceded in death by
her parents; her husband, Arthur; son-in-law, David Mix; sisters, Gyda, Inez,
Mildred and Olga; and brothers, Arnold and Ernest.

Durby, 68, of Lake Mills, died on Saturday, January 29, 2005, at the Lake Mills
Care Center in Lake Mills.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, February 3, at the
Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, with Rev. Roger Dykstra officiating.
Burial was in the Salem Memorial Cemetery in Lake Mills, with the Mittelstadt Funeral
Home in charge of the arrangements.
Marlo Archie
Durby, was born on October 6, 1936 in rural Forest City, the son of Palmer and
Nettie (Rognehaugh) Durby. Marlo graduated from the Thompson High School class
of 1954. He was united in marriage to Donna Vermedal on October 10, 1954
in Scarville. To this union, three children were born, Tony, Cindy and
Trisha. On March 15, 1979, Marlo was united in marriage to Bethel (Lashbrook)
Staff in Mason City. Marlo was employed 43 years in the telephone business.
This included the RTA in Thompson, the Lake Mills Telephone Company as
Manager for 18 years and WCTA in Lake Mills as staff assistant for 17 years.
Marlo retired in 2000.
Marlo was very active in the Lake Mills community
including 31 years on the Lake Mills Fire Department, six years as Fire
Marshall and two years as Fire Chief. He served on the City Council for 24
years, as Mayor Pro-tern for 10 of those years. He was active in the Salem
Lutheran Church as a member, church council and past president. He was
sports announcer for the Lake Mills Bulldogs football and basketball games. Marlo loved spending time on the golf course and also worked in the Pro Shop
at the Rice Lake Golf and Country Club after he retired.
Marlo is
survived by his wife, Bethel Durby of Lake Mills; three children, Tony and
his wife, Leontine Durby of St. Eustatius, Cindy and her husband, Craig Haugsdal of Lake Mills
and Trisha and her husband, Jerry Dahl of Albert Lea,
Minnesota; three step-children, Linda and her husband, Dick Smith of Cedar Falls,
Marty and his wife, Karen Staff of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, Mary and her husband,
Rick Lehman of Waterloo; 13 grandchildren, Danielle and Pascal Durby;
Michael and Kari Haugsdal; Spencer, Emma and Carter Dahl; Lisa Schumacher;
Shelley Lauritson; Sheri and Matt Staff; Sara Comer; and Chass Lehman; three
great-grandchildren, Vaneesha, Jayla and Mya; one brother, Merle and his
wife, Blanche Durby of Thompson; two sisters, Dorothy Guhl of Jewell and Ruby
and her husband, Dean Farland of Thompson; along with several nieces, nephews,
other relatives and friends.
Marlo was preceded in death by
his parents; one brother, John; one sister-in-law, DeLores; one
brother-in-law, Al Guhl; and two granddaughters, Dana Haugsdal and Hailey
Dahl.

Mark Willis, 49, of Clear Lake, died
on
Sunday, January 30, 2005, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.
Funeral
services were held on Thursday, February 3, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake,
with Rev. Derik Yarian and Lay Assistant Richard Scott officiating. Burial was
in the Madison Township Cemetery, Forest City, with the Ward-Van Slyke Funeral Home
in charge of the arrangements.
Mark Dweldon Willis, was born
on March 30,
1955 in Forest City, the son of Eldon J. and Olina (Maakestead) Willis. Mark
graduated from the Forest City High School in 1973 and attended two years of
technical school in Ankeny. He excelled in high school sports, making the 1971
All Conference Team in football and made the All Conference teams in basketball.
Mark was united in marriage with Vicki Cooper on April 3, 1974, at the Forest City
Lutheran Church and to this union three children were born, Chad, Stephanie and
Brent. Mark worked for Sears for eight years in customer service; owned his own
ceiling cleaning business for four years; and worked for Opportunity Village as
a job coach and supervisor.
Mark has been a visible and valuable citizen to the
Clear Lake community. His involvement in many organizations has contributed a
lot. He was a member of the Clear Lake Noon Lions, the Easter Seals Society, NIACOG (North Iowa Area Council of Governments) and several Opportunity Village
Committees. Mark was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake.
Mark is survived by his children, Chad
Willis of Chicago, Illinois, Stephanie Willis of Ames and Brent Willis of Clear
Lake; his father, Eldon J. Willis and his wife, Carole of Forest City; brother,
David Willis and his children, Jacob and Logan of Forest City; sister, Joan
Klein and her husband, Steve and their children, Lindsay and Jamie of Victoria,
Texas; sister, Carol Willis of Victoria, Texas; aunt, Opal Browning of Minnesota;
and
ex-wife, Vicki Anderson of Clear Lake.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Olina
Willis.

Arlyn Rauk, 74, of Leland, died
on Sunday, January 30, 2005, at the Lake Mills
Care Center in Lake Mills.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, February 2, at the
Winnebago Lutheran Church in rural Lake Mills, with Rev. Bill Peters
officiating. Burial was in the Winnebago Lutheran Cemetery, with the Petersen
Lund Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
Arlyn Ordean
Rauk, was born on his grandparents' farm in Mt. Valley Township, Winnebago
County, on August 10, 1930, the son of Alien and Olga (Rusley) Rauk. Arlyn
was baptized at home and confirmed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest
City. He received his education in rural school in Mt. Valley Township and
graduated from the Forest City High School in 1948. He worked with his father on
the family farm until being inducted into the U.S. Marine Corps in 1952. He
was stationed in Japan with the Peacekeeping Forces following the Korean
Conflict. He was honorably discharged from the service in 1954 and returned
home to work with his dad. On June 23, 1978, he was united in marriage with
Lila (Askeland) Egesdal at the Winnebago Lutheran Church in
rural Lake Mills and the couple made their home in rural Leland.
Arlyn loved
caring for animals and in his early years raised horses and milked cows. In
later years, he discovered a passion for raising beef cattle and also
enjoyed grain farming. Arlyn was an avid sports fan. As a young man he
bowled and was an excellent softball player. Over the years he attended as
many games as he could to watch his children and grandchildren participate.
He treasured time spent with his family and loved to have coffee and visit
with his friends. He was a member of the Winnebago Lutheran Church, the VFW and
the American Legion.
Arlyn is survived by his wife,
Lila Rauk of Leland; his children and their spouses, Kathy and Joe Skeens of
Clive, Daria and Tim Tarmann of Cambridge, Minnesota and Mark and Tammy Egesdal
of Forest City; 11 grandchildren, Vanessa, Brittany, Katelyn and
Courtney Skeens; Jennith and Dane Tarmann; Amber, Ashley, Annette, Zachary
and Zarren Egesdal; a brother and sister-in-law, Carlyle and Dixie Rauk of
Forest City; an uncle, Carlton Rauk and wife, Ruby of Forest City; nephews, Kerby Rauk, Scott Rauk, Jeff Rauk and Kelly Rauk; and numerous cousins.
Arlyn was preceded in death
by his parents.

Elmer Flugum,
83, of Long Beach, California,
formerly of Leland, died on Sunday, January 30, 2005, of cancer, at the Alamitos Belmont Rehab
Hospital in Long Beach, California.
Memorial services were held on Monday, January 31, at the
Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Los Alamitos, California. Pastor Thomas L. Lange and
associate officiated. According to Elmer's wishes, his body was cremated and his
ashes scattered at sea.
Elmer, the son of Edward and Andrina (Holstad)
Flugum, was born on August 4, 1921 at Leland. Elmer grew up in the Leland area
after spending his early years in Texas. After serving in the Merchant Marines,
he made his home in California. He was an accomplished cabinet maker and wood
craftsman. With an ever inquisitive mind, he enjoyed all aspects of flying,
boating and golfing, having played with Tiger Woods when Woods was a young
child. He took note of the youngster's extreme talent for the game.
Elmer also
enjoyed square dancing and volunteering his time to numerous charities. He
handcrafted over 3,000 treasure boxes of various styles and wood, giving all
away to family, friends, shelters and the handicapped, keeping none for himself.
He will be remembered for his humor and master story telling.
He is survived by a brother, Marvin Flugum
of Emmons, Minnesota; sisters, Myrtle (Robert) Witham of Lake Mills, Agnes (John) Furiosi of San Francisco, California,
Lenore (Ira) Wilson of San Francisco, California
and Arlene (Roger) Roberts of Mason City; aunts,
Nora (Elton) Peterson of Northwood, Agnes Jenson of Grand Meadow, Minnesota and
Martha Peterson of Lake Mills; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and
twin brothers, Wayne and Duane.

Virginia L. Helvick, 82,

Virginia L. Helvick, was born
on a farm in Mt. Valley Township, Winnebago County, on February 28, 1922,
the daughter of Frank and Emma (Hellickson) Helvick. Virginia received her
education at the Landreu Country School near her home. She made her home with her
parents on the farm for many years. For the last 20 years she lived at the Town
Square Apartments in Forest City.
She enjoyed babysitting and caring for
children. Virginia liked to play cards with friends and go to the movies.
She is survived by her sisters,
Janice Graham and husband, Richard of Forest City, Kathryn Lansing and husband,
Eugene of Westland, Michigan, Bonnie Kelly of Des Moines and Shirley Johnson and
husband, Wallace of Aurora, Colorado; two sisters-in-law, Ardis Helvick and Alvada
Helvick, both of Forest City; and many nieces and nephews.
Virginia was preceded in death by
her parents, Frank and Emma Helvick; brothers, Garmon and Donovon; sisters,
Frances and Mavis; and a brother, Franklin who died in infancy.
