Glenn Werstein, 63

Glenn L. Werstein, 63, of Swaledale, died on Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at his home.

A memorial service was held on Friday, May 7, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Mark Young officiating. According to his wishes, following the visitation, his body was cremated.

Glenn was born on February 15, 1941 in Belmond, the son of Anton and Emma (Robb) Werstein. He attended the Ventura High School. Glenn served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Kitty Hawk. Following the service he worked construction in Clear Lake. He then worked for Secory's Plumbing and Heating from 1969 until 1974. Then he went to work at the Lehigh Portland Cement Co. until retiring in 2003.

Glenn was united in marriage to Patricia Drake on September 30, 1966, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. Glenn and Pat moved from Clear Lake to their current home in 1975, which they built. Glenn enjoyed camping, tinkering on machinery, building his house, boating on Clear Lake, grilling and his retirement. He loved taking his family on Sunday drives.

Glenn is survived by his wife, Pat Werstein of Swaledale; two children, Dan Werstein of Swaledale and Angie Mirecki and her husband, Louis of Los Angeles, California; two brothers, Donald Werstein and his wife, Joanne of Clear Lake and Richard Werstein and his wife, Phyllis of Lawton, Oklahoma; and several nieces and nephews.

Glenn was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Lyle.

Robert Hill, 83

Robert S. Hill, 83, died on Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at home.

Memorial services were held on Friday, May 7, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Forest City, with Pastor Doug Farrell officiating. Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson, with the Winter Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements. Casket bearers were Glen Swanson, Juern Akkermann, James Eden, Tedd Gassman, Job Akkermann and Tim Palmer.

Robert "Bob" Smith Hill, the son of Philip and Vera (Maynard) Hill, was born on August 4, 1920 in Saginaw, Michigan. Bob graduated in 1938 from high school in Davison, Michigan. He farmed with his brother, Paul for several years. After graduating from the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, he spent some time in Denver, Colorado, helping to build a Christian camp. He also helped build a camp in Michigan where he lost the ends of three fingers. The Lord impressed upon him that even though his hand was shortened, "the Lord's hand had not been shortened." For 6½ years he was the pastor at two small churches at Prescott and Wittemore, Michigan. He also built about 15 churches and camp buildings.

He was united in marriage to Shirley Sommer at Dowagiac, Michigan on August 17, 1963. To this union three daughters and a son were born. Together they served a small country church near East Jordan, Michigan. They moved to Thompson in 1973.

Bob was a carpenter. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Forest City, where he taught Sunday School, served as a deacon, sang in the choir and worked in AWANA. He also preached often at the Good Samaritan Center.

Bob is survived by his wife, Shirley of Thompson; daughters, Vera (Dennis) Swanson of Swea City, Faith (Paul) Paszkiewicz of Lake Mills and Hope (Roger) Smith of Whitewater, Wisconsin; son, John (Mary) Hill of Indianapolis, Indiana; a brother, Philip (Donna) of Davison, Michigan; sister-in-law, Shirley Hill of Davison, Michigan; 14 grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Paul; and an infant brother and sister.

Burton Mitchell, 86

Burton K. Mitchell, 86, died on Wednesday, May 5, 2004, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 10, at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Lake Mills, with Pastor Audrey Young officiating. Burial was in the Salem Memorial Cemetery in Lake Mills, with full military honors performed by the Otto Chose Post #235 of the American Legion. The Mittelstadt Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Burton Kenneth, the son of Charles and Ethel (Niles) Mitchell, was born on July 11, 1917 at Hawkeye. Burton attended and graduated from the Hawkeye High School. He went on to graduate from Upper Iowa University in Fayette. On July 15, 1941, Burton was drafted out of college to enter the United States Army. He served his country during WW II. Mr. Mitchell was honorably discharged as a 1st lieutenant on April 12, 1943.

He accepted his first teaching position at the Oran High School in Oran, following which, he took his first superintendent position with the Dinsdale Community School in Dinsdale. On July 15, 1949, Burton was united in marriage with June Hope Burnside at the Little Brown Church in the Vale at Nashua. The couple made their home in Allison, where Burton was the superintendent of schools at Allison-Bristow for nine years, before moving to Lake Mills. Mr. Mitchell was the superintendent at the Lake Mills Community School from 1964 until his retirement in 1985.

Burton was a member of the United Methodist Church in Lake Mills and was active with the Shriners for a number of years. He was a member of the Lake Mills Otto/Chose Post #235 of the American Legion.

Survivors include his daughter, Kathy Vander Horst of Albert Lea, Minnesota; three grandchildren, Nathaniel Petersen and his wife, Jennifer of Owatonna, Minnesota, Kelsey Vander Horst and her fiancée, Travis Peters of Clarks Grove, Minnesota and Karlye Vander Horst of Albert Lea, Minnesota; one great-grandson, Ethan Peters; a sister, Edith Grahman and her husband, Doug of Sumner; a sister-in-law, Marie Mitchell of Hawkeye; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, June on September 27, 2000; a son, Craig Mitchell; sister, Bernice Morgan; and four brothers, Vern, Howard, Roy and Mervin Mitchell.

Gretchen L. Falb, 78

Gretchen L. Falb, 78, died on Thursday, May 6, 2004, fortified by the sacraments of the Holy Mother Church.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, May 10, at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, with the Rev. Fr. Ron Skufca officiating. Burial was in the Riverside Cemetery, Menominee.

Gretchen was born on December 7, 1925 in Forest City, to the late Rex and Claire (Schafer) Falb. She attended public schools and graduated from the Northwest Institute of Medical Technology in Minneapolis. She was employed in clinics in Minneapolis, Wayzeta and San Diego. Gretchen fostered two young boys and loved them as her own. Gretchen resided in Golden Valley, Minnesot, for many years before moving to Menominee in 1988. During that period she worked for the International Paper Company for 30 years, retiring as National Accounts Sales Coordinator.

She was active in the Befriender program. She also took part in Minnesota politics at the precinct and district levels, serving as delegate to Democratic State Conventions. Following her move to Menominee, she was active in her parish, Holy Redeemer, as a council member, RCIA facilitator, Reader, Eucharistic Minister and took communion to the homebound, becoming very attached to them. She was an officer of the GFWC Menominee Women's Club and served in other Menominee organizations: The Menominee Study Club, Democratic Club, Animal Shelter, volunteer for the Red Cross Bloodmobile, mentor at Lincoln School, and along with her friend, Frances Decker, was a Medicare/Medicaid volunteer counselor. They helped many people in the city and county.

Gretchen was fond of the out-of-doors and of wildlife, often holding conversations with the deer who gathered to be fed. She also spoke and listened to birds and chipmunks.

Gretchen is survived by her dearest friend, Frances A. Decker and all the Decker relatives who claimed her as family. Also by an extended family: John Wheeler and family of Rapid City, South Dakota, Dr. Michael Wheeler and family of Laurel, Montana and Mrs. Mary Jo (Michael) Genin of Indianapolis, Indiana; several cousins; three godchildren, Robert, Wendy and Collin.

She loved people of all ages and from all walks of life. She gave freely of her love and time and in return was dearly loved. She is further survived by friends, the Steve Ruleau family, Linda, Jackie, Margaret, Barb, Dawn, Rosanne, Suzanne and many more.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Eugene.

Rose Ann Sunde, 53, died on Saturday, May 8, 2004, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 11, at the United Methodist Church in Forest City, with Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery in Forest City.

Rose Ann Sunde, was born in Forest City on June 7, 1950, the daughter of Kenneth and Evangeline (Thompson) Nelson. Rose Ann received her education in the Forest City and Thompson Schools. In 1970, Rose Ann was married to Benny Connor. He passed away in 1982. She married James Sunde on December 24, 1985 at the United Methodist Church in Forest City. The couple made their home in Forest City.

Rose Ann enjoyed going fishing and taking care of her cats and dogs. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Forest City. She entered the Lake Mills Care Center in November of 2003.

She is survived by her husband, James Sunde of Lake Mills; a daughter, Evangeline Lillian Block of Algona and a granddaughter; and two aunts, Uva Hanson and Lois Verhoef and her husband, Herman, all of Forest City.

Rose Ann was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister.

Lyle Sheller, 91

Graveside services for Lyle M. Sheller, 91, of Northridge, California, formerly of Forest City, will be held on Saturday, May 22, at 10:30 a.m., in the Madison Township Cemetery, with Pastor Lee Laaveg officiating. He died on Sunday, February 1, 2004. Immediately following the service, a reception will be held at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City.

Lyle Minor Sheller, the son of Minor and Alma (Kurtz) Sheller, was born on July 5, 1912 in Stratford. Lyle spent his formative years in Belmond. When he was still in high school, he began barbering in his father's shop. He was united in marriage to Berdella Nerem on February 19, 1932. They settled in Rippey where their three children were born. Lyle barbered there for a time, then took a job working for Ferguson-Diehl Construction Company building the Al-Can Highway. During WW II, Lyle served in the Navy Seabees. He was first stationed at Farragut Naval Station in Idaho, then saw duty in the Philippines.

Following his discharge from the Navy, the family moved to Forest City where he continued barbering. In 1964, they purchased the Snelling Motel in Minneapolis, Minnesota and moved there to manage it. Their next move was to Decorah where they were partners in a movie theater. From there they moved to Glendale, California, where they owned and operated a Laundromat until retirement. Lyle was adventurous in his hobbies and piloted his own plane. During their retirement in Camarillo and Apple Valley, California, they enjoyed traveling around the U.S. and into Mexico in their motorhome. They moved to Northridge, California in 2000, to live with their daughter.

Lyle is survived by his wife of almost 72 years, Berdella; daughters, Karen Sheller of Northridge, California and Marna (Al) Erdahl of Hopkins, Minnesota; son, Gary (Marvel) Sheller of Tehachapi, California; granddaughter, Ann (Steve) Cortez of Tehachapi, California; granddaughter-in-law, Melinda Sheller of Camarillo, California; grandsons, Mark (Tia Karelson) Erdahl and Dean Erdahl of Minneapolis, Minnesota; five great-grandchildren; brother, Roy (Bunnie) Sheller of Fresno, California; sister, Dorothy (Bob) Bachman of Chico, California; sisters-in-law, Leola Sheller of Santa Maria, California and Jean Sheller of Port Orchard, Washington.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Harry, Robert, Earl and Donald Sheller; sister, Margery Howard; and great-granddaughter, Kelley Ann Fort.

She is survived by her daughters, Joyce Gillespie, Marjorie Kamrath, Martha Underhill, Judith Chambers, Linda Lister and Mary Pavon; sons, Michael Prescott, Ronald Christiansen and Douglas Christiansen; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Mildred; and her husband, Gordon Christiansen.

Walter "Honest Bud" Schaumberg, 79, died on Sunday, May 23, 2004, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 26, at the United Methodist Church in Garner, with the Rev. David Wagner officiating. Music was provided by organist, Mary Kopacek who accompanied soloist, Shelley Haugland and congregational hymns. Ushers were Marvin and Maynard Schoneman. Honorary bearers were Bud's grandchildren and great grandchildren. Casket bearers were Marty Karsjens, Philip Olson, Waylon Folkerts, Cody Lunning, Matthew Schaumberg and Jim Janessen. Burial was in the Graceland Cemetery in Buffalo Center, with military rites by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit. The Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner was in charge of the arrangements.

Walter William "Bud" Schaumberg, the son of August and Fannie (Boeckholt) Schaumberg, was born on September 30, 1924 at Titonka. He grew up in the Lakota and Ledyard areas, where he attended the rural schools and then farmed with his parents. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on December 7, 1944 and received his basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. He served his country during WW II in the Asiatic Pacific Theater and obtained the rank of technician fifth degree. Bud was honorably discharged on July 18, 1946.

On November 24, 1946, he married Violet "Dolly" Cassem at Lakota. They were blessed with seven children. They lived in Lakota until 1951, when they moved to the Buffalo Center area and farmed. In 1956, they moved to Rake and Bud began selling cars at Kastner's Chevrolet in Kiester, Minnesota and in 1963 at L & M Motors in Blue Earth, Minnesota. In July of 1969, the family moved to Garner where Bud and a partner started K & S Chevrolet which he operated until 1980. Violet passed away on August 17, 1986. On September 12, 1987, Bud married Mabel Lunning and the family was increased by three more children. Bud continued in the car business as a salesman at Schukei Chevrolet in Mason City and in 1987 at Ollenburg Motors in Garner. Bud had been in the car business for over 47 years.

He enjoyed his family, fishing and selling cars. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Garner, the Garner VFW and American Legion and was a past member of the Garner Lions Club.

He is survived by his wife, Mabel of Garner; his mother, Fannie Hofmann of Buffalo Center; children, JoAnn (Harold) Curley of Garner, Doreen (Philip) Olson of Garner, Donna Karsjens of Garner, Jim (Deb) Schaumberg of Forest City, Norman (Joyce) Lunning of Garner and Sue (Randy) Folkerts of Forest City; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Lunning and friend, Dave of Coulter; 22 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Tressie Thompson of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Carolyn Elwood of Buffalo Center and Deloris Thompson of Bancroft; and a sister-in-law, Ruby Knight of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dolly; his father; three children in infancy, Nancy, Peggy Sue and Rodney; a son, DeWayne Lunning; grandson, Matthew Folkerts; and five brothers-in-law.

Lana "Lannie" Hanson, 63

Lana Hanson, 63, died on Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at the Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 29, at the Fertile Lutheran Church in Fertile, with Rev. Clarence Baalson officiating. The Petersen Lund Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Lana "Lannie" K., the daughter of Lenus and Katherine (Buckley) Hanson, was born in Mason City on June 22, 1940. Lannie was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She received her education in Forest City, graduating from the Forest City High School in 1958 and continued her education at Waldorf College. She spent many years in the food and beverage industry. During the last 20 years she worked intensively raising funds for worthy causes, most often with fire departments and law enforcement. She was especially proud of a drug awareness program she developed called "Kids Talk To Kids."

She treasured time spent with her family and loved having everyone home and cooking wonderful meals for them. She was a very giving person whose home and dinner table were open to anyone who needed a hot meal or a helping hand. She loved to plant and care for flowers. She enjoyed watching old movies and was an avid John Wayne fan.

Lannie is survived by her husband, Earl Kilen of Fertile; her children, Jerry Abrahamson and wife, Julie and their children, Jessica Bennedict and Jennie, Jeremy and Jacob Abrahamson; Stephenie K. Abrahamson and her children, Sheyanne Oudekerk and Sara Jo O'Connell; Kenneth Kimes and wife, Sharon and their daughter, Grace Kimes; Timothy Kimes and wife, Shari and their children, Nicolle and Katie Kimes; and an adopted son, Rance. J. Amen; six great-grandchildren, Ethan Awe, Alexis, Autum and Arianne Bennedict, Sadrea Jo Dobbins and Sade Jo Ann Dobbins; a sister and brother-in-law, Sonya and Rev. Gerald Dyste; and her loyal Schnauzer, Muffin.

James Earl Haag, was born on November 2, 1942 at Buffalo Center. James graduated from the Thompson High School in 1960 and attended Iowa State University in Ames, majoring in construction engineering. He also served his country in the United States Army. His first job was with the Eagle-Western Construction Company in Loveland, Colorado. His current job was as purchasing project manager for the Arizona Central Water Project in Phoenix, Arizona.

James is survived by his wife, MaryAnn and a son, Nathan of Phoenix; two grandsons, Jason and Ryan; three brothers, Duane Haag of Morton, Illinois, John Haag of Garner and Dyrald Haag of Alpharetta, Georgia; and a sister, Cynthia (Mrs. Jeff Henning) of Johnston, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by a son, Jason; his parents; a brother, Jerome; and a sister, Debra.

Ernie K. Mannes, 88, of Lake Mills, died on Friday, May 28, 2004, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 1, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, with Rev. Kevin Mackey officiating. Burial was in the Salem Memorial Cemetery in Lake Mills, with the Mittelstadt Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Ernest Kenneth Mannes, was born on April 1, 1916, to Severt John and Anna Louise (Pahmeyer) Mannes, near Leland. Ernie was baptized at the West Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Leland and confirmed at the Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson. He was united in marriage to Ethel Elvera Senne at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Titonka, on March 9, 1947. He was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church, where he enjoyed playing on the Dart Ball Team and a member of the Brotherhood. Ernie was a longtime farmer in the Thompson, Lake Mills, Emmons, Britt, Garner and Joice areas. Ernie and Ethel moved to Lake Mills in 1972. He was employed at Deluxe Products/Fleetguard Inc. for over 17 years, retiring in 1983.

He enjoyed golfing, lawn mowing and working around the yard, moving snow with his snow blower and especially reading books to all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ernie is survived by his loving wife, Ethel Mannes of Lake Mills; his sons, Kenneth (Nylene) Mannes, Robert (Beverly) Mannes, Wayne (Sue) Mannes, all of Lake Mills; grandchildren, LeAnn (Robert) Storby, Kyle (LuAnn) Mannes, Krystal Mannes and Adam Barker, Chris (Mary) Mannes, Vera Mannes, Allen Mannes, Aaron Mannes, Mike (Heather) Mannes, Ben Mannes; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ruth (Jim) Fosnaugh and Jean Pearson, both of Klemme, Doris Johnson of Jefferson; along with many nieces and nephews.

Adene V. Hagen, 83, of Garner, died on Saturday, May 29, 2004, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, June 2, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garner, with the Rev. Henry Friedrich officiating. Music will be provided by organist, Beverly Cataldo who will accompany soloist, Doug Hayes and a congregational hymn. Usher will be Alvin "Pete" Hansen. Honorary bearers will be Kelly Jo Hagen, Floyd Gilbertson, Russell Latch and Gary Anderson. Casket bearers will be Vance Hagen, Travis Hagen, Jeramie Hagen, Jamie Hagen, Russell Leitz and Gary Maben. Burial will be in the Beaver Creek Cemetery near Joice. The Cataldo Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Adene Viola Hagen, the daughter of Knudt J. and Marie (Bang) Tweed, was born on July 3, 1920 near Joice. She graduated the youngest in her class in 1936 from the Joice High School. On October 11, 1941, she was married to Earl LeRoy Hagen at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice. They farmed near Joice until 1953, when they moved to Garner. Adene was employed at Winnebago Industries in Forest City and sold Tupperware. For the past 40 years she had also been selling Avon. She was recently honored by Avon for 30 consecutive years of service, by being presented with the Alby Award and service award.

Adene enjoyed visiting with friends and neighbors. She also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and stayed sharp as a tack. She loved family gatherings with all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church, LWML and the Avon Honor Society.

Adene is survived by her two sons, Larry (Ann) Hagen of Britt and Lon (Lynn) Hagen of Forest City; five grandchildren, Vance (Cindy) Hagen of Britt, Travis (Jamie) Hagen of Britt, Kelly Jo (Russell) Leitz of Leland, Jeramie (Annette) Hagen of Forest City and Jamie Hagen of Forest City; twelve great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Myrtle Hagen of Mason City; many nieces and nephews; and special friends, Pat and Gary Maben of Garner.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl; parents; sisters, Evelyn Latch, Henrietta Almelien and Hulda Gilbertson; and brothers, Joseph, Martin and Melville Tweed.

Selma I. Okland, 92, lifelong resident of Lake Mills, died on Monday, May 31, 2004, at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 3, at the Center Evangelical Lutheran Church, rural Leland, with Rev. Thomas Rank officiating. Burial was in the Synod Lutheran Cemetery, Lake Mills.

Bonnie Sadie Burchett, 51, died on Monday, May 31, 2004.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, June 12, at the Hopewell Community Church in Hopewell, Oregon. Private inurnment will be in the Hopewell Cemetery, with arrangements by the Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.

Bonnie was born on February 11, 1953 in Forest City. She spent her childhood in Iowa and married John Burchett who died in 1993. They owned and operated Commercial Sweeping.

Bonnie loved gardening and yard work. She believed education and traveling with her children were important. She was a devout mother and her children were her pride and joy. She had a great sense of humor and was an all-around beautiful person. Bonnie loved the ocean and it was "her place" and a retreat. She was able to make a trip to the beach with her family just prior to her death.

Survivors include her daughter, Jessica Burchett of Salem, Oregon; sisters, Sharon Lance of Cedar Falls, LaRae Hamilton of Escondido, California, Kathy Hebel of Mason City and Vickie Charlson of Joice; brother, Steven Charlson of Mission, Texas; her mother, Sadie Charlson of Joice; and several nieces and nephews.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her husband; and her son, Jared.
