Jay W. Benson, age 76, of Forest City, died on Monday, March 1, 2004, at the Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Friday, March 5, at the United Methodist Church in Crystal Lake. Burial was in the Crystal Lake Cemetery, with the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Jay William Benson, was born on September 6, 1927, to Raymond S. Benson and Marie (Rinker) Benson. He attended School #7 in Linden Township through the eighth grade and ninth grade at Forest City. He served stateside in the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean War. Jay was born and lived on the home farm his entire life except during his military service. In April 1963, he married Lila Schnell. The couple later divorced.

Jay was a member of the United Methodist Church in Crystal Lake and held memberships in the VFW Post 6161 in Leland and the American Legion Post 409 in Crystal Lake.

Jay is survived by his daughters, Verla Nolte of Ackley and Lanette Benson of Greene; sons, Brian Benson of Aplington and David Benson of Allison; his sister, Opal Seeberger of Mason City; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Virgil Benson; and a sister, Viola Moen.

Milo D. Hauan, 75

Milo D. Hauan, 75, of Texas, died on Thursday, March 4, 2004, at the Harlingen Medical Center in Harlingen, Texas.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 2, at 2:00 p.m., at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson.

He was the oldest son of Herman and Minnie (Sunde) Hauan of Thompson. Milo was employed at Winnebago Industries for 10 years and then moved to Illinois and later to Texas, where he managed an 82-unit condominium complex for 15 years.

He is survived by his daughter, Yvonne (Larry) Lawson of Thompson; two brothers, Gary Hauan of Camdenton, Missouri and Lowell Hauan of Albert Lea, Minnesota; two granddaughters, Stacy Smith of Des Moines and Melinda (Kevin) Pederson of Forest City; three great-grandchildren, Layne, Kurds and Sydney Pederson; three step-daughters; one step-son; 13 step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise; and his parents.

Gretchen Jeanette Boehm, 81

Gretchen Jeanette Boehm, 81, died on Saturday, March 6, 2004, at the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 10, at the First Baptist Church in Buffalo Center, with Rev. Paul Haugen officiating. Organist, Vera Bronleewe accompanied George Dobrovolny and congregational hymns. Interment was in the Graceland Cemetery, Buffalo Center, with the Winter Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements. Honorary bearers were Sara Murphy and Jamie Boehm. Casket bearers were Larry Boehm, Matthew Murphy, Joshua Boehm, Jeremy Boehm, Randy Swalve and Duane Boehm.

Gretchen Jeanette Boehm, the daughter of John and Grace (Ennenga) Wessels, Jr., was born on January 10, 1923 near Buffalo Center. On April 3, 1947, Gretchen was united in marriage to Carl W. Boehm in Blue Earth, Minnesota. Together they farmed near Lakota for 21 years. They then moved to an acreage in Stevens, where they made their home until June 2002, when Gretchen became a resident at the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center.

Gretchen was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Gretchen helped Carl with the day-to-day chores and tended to their home and family. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Buffalo Center and a member of the Timely Mission Nursing Home staff for 25 years, where she formed many wonderful friendships with her co-workers.

Gretchen is survived by her husband of 56 years, Carl Boehm; three children, Patricia Boehm of Urbandale, Sandra Murphy of La Porte City and Larry and his wife, Mary of Black River Falls, Wisconsin; five grandchildren, Matthew and Sara Murphy of La Porte City, Joshua, Jeremy and Jamie Boehm of Black River Falls; a sister, Jean Swalve of Swea City; a sister-in-law, Geraldine Wessels of Buffalo Center; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Gretchen was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Jake Wessels; and brother-in-law, Arnold Swalve.

Irene Tinderholt, 81, of Redwood City, California, died on Tuesday, March 9, 2004.

A memorial service was held at the Menlo Park Presbyterian Church in Menlo Park, California, on Saturday, March 20. A memorial service is planned to be held in Thompson, with burial in the West Prairie Cemetery, rural Thompson.

Irene was born on April 22, 1922, to Orville and Cora Killand of Lake Mills. She was baptized and confirmed at the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills and graduated from the Lake Mills High School in 1940. Irene taught school at King #7 southeast of Thompson for three years. While teaching there, she met and married Waldo Tinderholt in 1942. Two sons were born to this union. She was an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Thompson.

Irene is survived by her sons, Paul (Marilyn) of Redwood City, California and Mark (Linda) of Spring Valley, California; grandchildren, Kristin Tinderholt and Jeffrey Tinderholt, both of San Diego, California; sister, Doris (Gerald) Stippich of Kennewick, Washington; brother, Wayne (Joanne) Killand of Richland, Washington; sister-in-law, Dorothy (Robert) Ambroson; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; sisters, Arlette (Albert) Grady, Overa (Glenn) Cameron and Lorraine; and brothers, Elwood and Gary Killand.

William "Bill" T. Holmund, 94, passed away on Saturday, March 13, at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, March 17, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, with Rev. Kevin Mackey officiating. Following cremation, the burial will take place at a later date in the Elmwood Cemetery in Mason City. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 16, from 5-7:00 p.m., at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills and will continue one hour prior to the services at the church on Wednesday.

Gladys T. Dillon Erickson, 98, died on Saturday, March 13, 2004, at the Banner Hospice House in Mesa, Arizona.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, April 3, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson, with Rev. Mark Decker officiating. Inurnment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Thompson.

Gladys T. Dillon Erickson, was born on January 24, 1906 near Thompson. She attended high school in Thompson and college at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. Gladys was united in marriage with Paul Dillon on January 7, 1929. Following his death, she married W.H. "Bill" Erickson, a long time friend, in 1972. Gladys, beloved by her large family and many friends, made her permanent home in Overland Park, Kansas, for the past 10 years after spending most of her life in Mason City and Thompson.

Gladys was a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Overland Park, Kansas, where a memorial service was held in addition to a service in Mesa, Arizona.

She is survived by five children, Ron (Marjorie) Dillon of Lenexa, Kansas, Marlis (Vie) Hadeed of Highland Beach, Florida, Dale (Jan) Dillon of Thief River Falls, Minnesota, Larry Dillon of Roseville, California and Neil (Jackie) Dillon of Chandler, Arizona; step-daughter, Florence (Harold) de Buhr of Ottumwa; 22 grandchildren; and 42 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Paul and Bill; and an infant brother, Ray.

Anna H. Meyer, 88, of Mason City, died on Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at the Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City.

Funeral services were on Friday, March 19, at the West Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Leland, with Rev. Jackie Swanson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery, with the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Anna H. Meyer, was born in Pleasanton, on January 15, 1916. She received her education at the Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs, graduating in 1939. After graduation she began housekeeping for the Meyer family in rural Forest City. Here she met and fell in love with David Meyer. The couple married on January 18, 1940 and began farming west of Leland. Anna helped with the farming operation and worked at Bertha's Truckstop Cafe in Leland for several years. She enjoyed playing cards with friends and family. The couple retired in 1981 and moved into Leland. In 1994, they moved to Mason City.

Anna was an active member of the Mascia Club for over 60 years, a social club for the deaf and hard of hearing. She was recognized recently for her years of service to the club. She was also involved with the Iowa Deaf Camping Association and attended the Church for the Deaf at Bethlehem Lutheran in Mason City.

Anna is survived by her children, David Meyer Jr. of Manly, Ella McNeely of Mason City, Phyllis Hohenfield of Clinton, Donna Herndon and husband, Robert "Bob" of Des Moines; an "adopted" daughter, Luella Graupmann and husband, Roland of Mason City; 19 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Sara Foster of Ankeny; and a brother, Billy Graves of Des Moines.

Anna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, David Meyer in 1999; a daughter, Shirley Daggett; a brother, Roe Graves; a sister, Hazel George; a sister who died in infancy; and a granddaughter, Shirley Murphy.

Ellen R. (Jefson) Lehto, 60, died surrounded by her family on Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at the Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 22, at the Word of Peace Lutheran Church in Rogers, Minnesota. Interment was in the Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.

A retired second grade teacher at Wilson Elementary School in Anoka, Minnesota, Ellen was also a beloved mom, sister, aunt and friend. Her vibrant personality and generous spirit will be greatly missed by all.

Ellen is survived by her sons, Jonathan and Daniel; her mother, Velma Jefson; seven sisters; six brothers; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; and father, Lyle Jefson.

Caryl H. Peterson, 89

Caryl H. Peterson, 89, of Lake Mills, died surrounded by her family on Sunday, March 21, 2004, at the Signet Health and Rehabilitation Center in Prescott, Wisconsin.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 25, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, with Rev Roger Dykstra officiating. Burial was in the Sunnyside Cemetery in Lake Mills, with the Mittelstadt Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Caryl, the first child of Alfred and Clara (Thompson) Larson, was born near Sharp's Corner on December 17, 1914. In between these dates was a life lived to the fullest, with chapters focusing on family, friends and work. Following graduation from the Lake Mills High School in 1934, she served for five years as the bookkeeper for the Lake Mills Farmers Elevator where her father was the manager. She often shared how much she enjoyed working those five years by his side.

On September 12, 1940, Caryl married Milton A. Peterson at the Salem Lutheran Church Parsonage. The following five years were spent farming west of Lake Mills on the farm where Milton grew up. Milton then decided to go back into teaching, first in Belle Plaine, Iowa and later in Greene, Iowa. These years brought many new friendships to their lives. In 1955, a move was made home to Lake Mills where Caryl and Milton began Peterson Furniture in partnership with Milton's brother, Ray Peterson. Following Milton's death in 1982, Caryl spent fourteen winters in Arizona where the family loved to visit and share time with grandma.

Caryl is lovingly remembered by her children, Marcia (Rod) Van Vleet and Jerry (Carmen) Peterson, all of Hastings, Minnesota; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, Amy and Brianna Van Vleet, Andy (Anisa), Zack, Cora and Rome Van Vleet, Rachael Peterson, Dan (Chris), Brandon, Melanie, Kali and Abby Peterson and Peter Van Vleet.

Caryl was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Milton; brother, Gerald Alfred Larson; sister, Ilene A. Krueger and her husband, Ralph; and step-father, Martin Westrum.

It is difficult at best to say good-bye to a loving mother and grandmother. We are going to miss her warm smile, infectious laugh, her kind and loving ways. It is truly a life to celebrate!

Eldon Finer, 87, of Clear Lake, died on Sunday, March 21, 2004, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 25, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel in Clear Lake, with Evangelist Robert Orr officiating. Interment was in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City. The Ward-Van Slyke Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Eldon, the son of Emil and Grace (Holland) Finer, was born on July 8, 1916, at Thompson. Eldon graduated from the Mason City High School in 1935. Following his graduation he worked in the office of Decker's. Eldon served in the U.S. Army during WW II and after his discharge returned to Mason City and worked with his father at Finer Foods in Clear Lake. After the family business was sold he returned to Decker's and continued in sales. He later was a meat cutter at Ames and Mason City. He also worked in the insurance business prior to his retirement. Eldon was united in marriage to Harriet Van Alien on November 26, 1955, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake.

Eldon loved spending time with his family, he loved music and was in the Mason City High School Band. He loved the Lord, reading the Bible, hosting gospel meetings and hymn sings in their home. Eldon enjoyed history and books about WW II and activities on the lake. He was a member of Mason City Christian Assembly.

Eldon is survived by his wife, Harriet Finer of Clear Lake; five children, Robin Peters and her husband, Michael of North Liberty, Cheryl Finer-Toppin and her husband, Jack of Garner, Jeffrey Finer and his wife, Linda of Clear Lake, Jacquelyn Dillon and her husband, Neil of Chandler, Arizona and Don Finer and his wife, Leslie of Aliso Viejo, California; and ten grandchildren, Jordan, Aaron, Stephan, Nathan and Hannah Peters, Nicole Toppin, Riley, Nickolas, Whitney Finer and David Dillon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two grandchildren, Kimm Finer and Steven Dillon.

Gustaf B. Gustafson, 96

Gustaf B. Gustafson, 96, died on Monday, March 22, 2004, at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Funeral services were held on Friday, March 26, at the Winnebago Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills, with Rev. Bill Peters officiating. Burial was in the Winnebago Lutheran Cemetery, with the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Gustaf B. Gustafson, the son of Carl and Sarah (Tweeten) Gustafson, was born on January 25, 1908, in Mt. Valley Township, Winnebago County, Iowa. He was the oldest of nine children. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, attended country school and the Waldorf Academy. On May 11, 1929, he married Agnes Larson at her parents' home in Ellington Township. The couple lived and farmed eight miles south of Lake Mills. He raised cattle and hogs along with his farming operation and retired in 1984. He moved into a condo in Forest City in 1999. In July of 2002, he moved to the Forest Plaza Assisted Living. Failing health forced him to enter the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City on March 2, 2004.

Gust was very interested in co-ops and served for 38 years on the Winnebago REC Board, 14 years on the Dairyland Power Board and retired in 1987 as Director of the Winnebago RTA. He also served on the Forest City School Board, the Forest City Bank and Trust Board of Directors, the Forest City Rotary Club and held many offices at the Winnebago Lutheran Church where he was a member. Gust and Agnes loved to travel and did extensively until her death in a car accident in 1975. Family gatherings were always an important part of his life.

Survivors include his daughter, Shirley Schutter and husband, Vernon; son, Carroll Gustafson and wife, Karen; daughter-in-law, Harriet Gustafson, wife of Gerald; seven grandchildren, Beth Eilers and husband, Dan, Bill Schutter and wife, Rita, Jeff Gustafson and wife, Cindy, Carl Gustafson and wife, Kim, Gregg Gustafson and wife, Susan, Kristen Rafferty and husband, Brian and Eric Gustafson; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; many nieces and nephews; two sisters, Charlotte Nelson and Ruth Olson of Forest City; a brother, Clemmit Gustafson and wife, Elaine of Walcott; and two sisters-in-law, Orva Gustafson of Lake Mills and Marge Gustafson of Taylors Falls, Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes; son, Gerald; grandson, Jon Gustafson; brothers, Cleo, James and Victor; his sister, Margaret Nyhus; and an infant brother, James William.

Carl Knudtson, 86, died on Saturday, March 27, 2004, at the United Hospital in Blue Earth, Minnesota.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 30, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Rake, with Rev. Larry Rehlander officiating. Organist, Julie Davids accompanied soloist, Marlys Andersen and congregational hymns. Military honors were by the American Legion Post #539 of Rake. Interment was in the West Cemetery in Rake, with the Winter Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements. Casket bearers were Haley Knudtson, Hanna Knudtson, Bob Brooks, Bill Brooks, Erik Knudtson, Jason Knudtson, Tom Rygh and Ron Rygh. Honorary bearers were Tom Carr, Chuck Johnson, Dave La Tourell Ron Oswald, Howard Smith and Jerry Winter.

Carl Gerald Knudtson, the son of Carl and Gertrude (Olson) Knudtson, was born on June 10, 1917 in Rake. Carl graduated from the Rake High School and shortly thereafter began his employment at the State Savings Bank in Rake. He was employed there for 42 years. He served in the Navy during World War II. He was united in marriage to Phyllis Kamatz on December 10, 1949, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Carl was active in his community and the Zion Lutheran Church for many years. Carl was an avid sports fan. He played baseball, bowled and golfed. He was fortunate to have bowled a 299 game and made a hole-in-one at the Minniowa Golf Tournament. He was also a loyal Iowa Hawkeye fan.

Carl is survived by his wife, Phyllis of Rake; one daughter, Connie Brooks of Buffalo Center; two sons, Phil Knudtson and his wife, Peggy of Belmond and Paul Knudtson and his wife, Colleen of Blue Earth, Minnesota; and seven grandchildren, Bob and Bill Brooks, Erik, Jason and Alex Knudtson, Haley and Hanna Knudtson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Lillian Quam; and two brothers, Earl Knudtson and Archie Knudtson.

Violet Levang, 87, of Clear Lake, died on Monday, March 29, 2004, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 2, at the Open Bible Church in Clear Lake, with Pastor Will Hunsaker officiating. The Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel of Clear Lake, was in charge of the arrangements.

Violet Viola, was born on December 26, 1917 in Melrose, Minnesota, the daughter of Arthur and Flossie (Coe) Cheney. Violet graduated from the Melrose High School and the University of Minnesota. She worked at the Palmer House in the Twin Cities, where she met her former husband at a Rival Meeting in the Twin Cities. Violet married Eli Levang in June of 1946. They lived on a farm west of Fertile. He died in 1982 and she continued to live on the farm until 1986. She then moved to Clear Lake. Violet worked for Ritter Nursing Home in Clear Lake from 1946 until 1968. She then cooked for the Fertile School until 1976. She was known as a grandmother to many children she babysat in her home.

She always put others before herself and was a very caring person. One of her goals in life was to read through the Bible every year. She was an active member of the Open Bible Church in Clear Lake.

Violet is survived by her son, Nathan Levang and his fiancée, Kim Anderson of Clear Lake; grandchildren, Marie Levang of Fertile, Laura Swingen of Fertile, Stephanie Daugard and her husband, Neil of Britt and Kara Swingen of Fertile; and her sister, Lilah Ruehmann of Little Rock, Arkansas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and one brother, Arthur Cheney.

Lillian Margaret Peterson, was born on February 22, 1916, in Hanlontown, the daughter of Arthur and Gertrude (Cameron) Peterson. She was united in marriage to Earl L. McMullin on September 4, 1937, at the Trinity Lutheran Church Parsonage in Mason City.

Lillian is survived by one daughter, Linda of Hanlontown; one son, Layton and his wife, Margaret of Mason City; two sisters, Phyllis Knudtson of Rake and Ruth Ann (Jack) Peterson of Forest City; as well as other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two sisters; and two brothers.

Arthur H. Vermedahl, 87, of Emmons, Minnesota, died on Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at his home in Emmons.

Funeral services were held on Monday, April 5, at the Emmons Lutheran Church in Emmons, with Rev. Julie Fiske officiating. Burial was in the Lime Creek Cemetery, Emmons.
