Bert Solsaa, 85

Bert D. Solsaa, 85, of Mason City, died
on Monday,
February 2, 2004, at the Mercy Medical Center, Mason City.
Funeral services were held on
Thursday, February 5, with Pastor Paul C. Nelson, St. of the St. James Lutheran Church,
officiating at the Major Erickson Funeral Home in Mason City. Burial will be in
the
Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City. Military rites will be conducted by the
Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.
Bert D., the son of Carl O. and Helena
(Halverson) Solsaa, was born on May 3, 1918 in Lincoln Township, Iowa, on the family
farm. He was baptized and later confirmed at the Pilot Knob Lutheran Church in
rural Forest City. Bert attended rural schools and helped his mother on the
family farm, working at different jobs in the area. He married Madeline P. Hoveland on October 4, 1943. Bert was drafted into the Navy in 1944 and served
in WW II. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and remained in California for two
years and then returned to run the family farm. He later worked at IMC,
Lifetime Motor Homes and retired from Lane Brothers Tire and Alignment. Bert
was united in marriage to Sandra Ringis-Lundahl on June 15, 1983.
They enjoyed
fishing, traveling and camping across the U.S. and Canada in their motor home,
most recently in Rock Falls. Bert was an avid trap shooter, winning several
state and national championships. He also played pool in various leagues. Bert
was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church, a lifetime member of the VFW, a
charter member of the Lifetime Good Sam's Camping Club and was a member of the
Moose Lodge.
Bert is survived and lovingly remembered by his
wife, Sandra Solsaa of Mason City; five children, Ron (Mary) Solsaa of Needville,
Texas, Linda (Jim) Sweeney of Mason City, Karen Solsaa of Lake Jackson, Texas,
Randy (Susan) Solsaa of Mason City and Patti (Mike) Heinold of Charleston,
Illinois; his step-daughter, Jean (Brad) Heagel of Kensett; 17 grandchildren;
nine great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; his mother-in-law, Hulda
Ringis; his sister, Fern Renn of Glendale, California; three brothers-in-law; two
sisters-in-law; a special niece and 2 special nephews and their families.
Bert was preceded in death by his parents; his
first wife; his sister, Ada Johnson; two brothers, Oswald and Orville (in
infancy); and seven brothers-in-law.

A Funeral Mass was held on
Monday, February 9, at the St. Dominic Warren Chapel, with Rev. James J. Madden,
celebrant. Interment was in the Houston National Cemetery, with the Earthman Fannin
Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
DeWayne, the son of Lewis and Hattie Barth, was
born on August 3, 1916, in Ellington Township. Bath, a
Navy veteran and Pearl Harbor survivor of the USS Arizona, served in the Navy
from 1936 until 1958. He achieved the rank of Chief Warrant Officer, Grade 4
and was awarded numerous service medals including the Bronze Star and Purple
Heart.
An avid hunter and fisherman, Barth was a lifetime member of Pearl Harbor
Survivors Association, VFW Post 5515, American Legion Post 256 and the Hancock
County Conservation Board.
He is survived by his wife, Maggie; daughters,
Margaret (Tom) Ambroson and Deborah (Jim) Arns; granddaughter, Christine Ambroson;
sister, Margie (Don) Skogerboe; and numerous relatives and friends.
Barth was preceded in death by his parents;
brother, Leigh; niece, Pamela Smith; and grandson, Bradley Ambroson.

Marie Teresa Henley, 41, of Miller, died
on
Friday, February 6, 2004, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.
Her
funeral was held on Monday, February 9, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garner, with the
Rev. Robert Bronson officiating. Music was provided by organist, Beverly Cataldo
who accompanied soloist, Doug Hayes and congregational hymns. Ushers were Alvin
"Pete" Hansen and Earl Jaspersen. Casket bearers were Jeff Henley, Brian Henley,
Ken George, David George, Scott Quastad and Gene Anhalt. The Cataldo Funeral Home in
Garner was in charge of the arrangements.
Marie Teresa Henley, the daughter of Neal and
Helen (Johnston) George, was born on May 28, 1962 at Albuquerque, New Mexico. She
attended school at the Janesville Consolidated School in Iowa, where she graduated
from high school in 1980. On May 28, 1993, she was married to Gregory J. Henley
at the Methodist Church in Clear Lake. They lived in the Garner area where they
raised their two sons, Terence age 11 and Patrick age 5. Her life was devoted to
her boys. Marie was employed as a pharmacy technician at the Corner Drug Store
in Clear Lake.
She enjoyed camping, horseback riding, gardening, cats, riding
motorcycles with her husband, Greg and, especially, spending time with her
family.
Marie is survived by her husband, Greg
of Miller; two sons, Terence and Patrick Henley; her parents, Neal and Helen
George of Janesville; a sister, Carol and husband, Gene Anhalt of Jesup; two brothers,
Ken George and wife, Christy of Kansas City, Missouri and David George and
wife, Mary of Cass Lake, Minnesota; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives
and friends.

8, 2004, at the Country Neighbors Home in New Richland, Minnesota.
Funeral

at 11:00 a.m., at the Emmons Lutheran Church in Emmons, with Rev. Julie Fiske
officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m., until the time of the services at the
church. Burial will be in the Oak Lawn Cemetery near Emmons.

Frederick W. Markham, 77,
of Belmond, died on Sunday, February 8, 2004, at the Belmond Medical Center.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, February 11, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Belmond, with
Rev. Louis Miller officiating. Burial was in the Belmond Cemetery, with the Ewing
Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
Frederick, the son of Ellis and Lizzie Markham,
was born in Franklin County southeast of Meservey. He was united in marriage to Jean Rae Wharton
on
February 14, 1948. Three daughters were born to this union. Fred was a devoted
husband and father. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior in 1954 and was a
member of the Calvary Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Jean; daughters,
Peggy (Gary) Wolters of Forest City, Diane (Ronald) Kallal of Fieldon, Illinois and
Suzanne Kocurek of Stacy, Minnesota; grandchildren, Lynn (Shereen) Wolters, Robert
Wolters, Heidi Wolters, Joan, Fred and Russel Kallal and Woodrow and Amanda Kocurek; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Eleanor Larrick of Osage and Gladys
Leist of Rochester, Minnesota; a brother, Donald (Joyce) Markham of Belmond; and many
nieces and nephews.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents; and
a sister, Maurine Peters.

Elnora Josephine Elwood,
88, died on Tuesday, February 10, 2004.
Funeral services were
held on Friday, February 13, at the United Methodist Church in Thompson, with Pastor Wayne Squier officiating. Interment was
in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Thompson, with the Winter
Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements. Organist, Eleanor Roper accompanied
congregational hymns. Casket bearers were Brice Pierce, Donald K. Johnson,
Rodger Neuman, Gregory Elwood, John Elwood, Duane Elwood.
Elnora Josephine Elwood, daughter of Theodore
and Gunda (Erickson) Johnson, was born on June 15, 1915 at Thompson. Elnora was baptized and confirmed at
the Bethel Lutheran Church
at Vinje. She was united in marriage to Neil C. Elwood on November 29, 1934 at
the Thompson Methodist Church Parsonage by Rev. Skarpness. They lived their
entire married life in the Thompson area where she held several jobs, the last
was at Walker Deluxe in Lake Mills. Elnora retired in 1977 to care for her
husband.
Elnora was a member of the United Methodist Church, the United
Methodist Women and the Priscilla Circle. She had held the office of President
in the WSCS and received her life membership pin while acting as president. She
enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and bowling, playing cards, fishing
and baking bread. In 1993, she sold her home and moved to Algona. She became a
resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Algona in October of 2000.
She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Leigh
and her husband, Dennis of Algona; four grandchildren, Amy Leigh of Algona, John
Leigh and his wife, April of Sioux City, Darin Leigh of Cedar Falls and Jenny
Leigh of Council Bluffs; three sisters-in-law, Pearl Johnson of Rochester,
Minnesota, Gulaine Elwood of Amery, Wisconsin and Carolyn Elwood of Buffalo Center; and
by several nieces and nephews.
Elnora was preceded in death by her parents;
her husband, Neil in 1978; four brothers, Gilman, Ingvald, George and Johnny; and
by five sisters, Laura Pierce, Ella Sill, Amanda Johnson, Tilda Weseman and
Edith Neuman.

Clifford Olson, 87, of
Lake Mills, died on Thursday, February 12, 2004, at the Lake Mills Care Center.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 14, at the
Center Evangelical Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills, with Rev. Thomas Rank officiating. Burial was
in the Center Evangelical
Church Cemetery, with the Mittelstadt Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
Clifford Alvin Olson, was born
on March 18, 1916, in
rural Winnebago County, Iowa, the son of Palmer C. and Nora (Langfald) Olson. On September 28,
1940, he was united in marriage to Irene A. Wigern in Scarville. Together, they
farmed on the home place near Leland. Irene passed away on September 15, 1977.
Clifford farmed all of his life.
He loved his family and was very proud of all
his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Clifford was a man of great faith and
served his church in many capacities over the years. He loved fishing, drinking
coffee and visiting with his many family and friends.
Clifford is survived by his loving children,
Bonnie and her husband, Francis Bruhns of Buffalo Center, Wayne and his wife,
Becky Olson of Thompson and Dale and his wife, Kris Olson of Ames; seven
grandchildren, Doug and his wife, Shannon Bruhns, Julie and her husband, Doug
Goodman, Jodi and her husband, Les Wubben, Bob and his wife, Marcy Olson, Susan
and her husband, John Bray, Chad Olson and Cory Olson; twelve
great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; Mildred Thompson of Forest City
who grew up with Clifford as a sister; along with several nieces, nephews,
cousins, other relatives and friends.
Clifford was preceded in death by his parents;
and his wife, Irene.

Donald Narveson, 80

Donald D. Narveson, 80, of
Waterloo, died on Thursday, February 12, 2004, at the Covenant Medical Center.
Memorial
services were held on Monday, at the Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel in Waterloo.
Donald D., the son of Andrew and Vera (Aamoth)
Narveson, was born on January 24, 1924 in Forest City. He was united in marriage to Beverly J. Hill
on August 27, 1948 in Forest City. Narveson served during WW II in the U.S. Army. He
taught Biology and Science in the Waterloo School System from 1950-1983.
He was
a PGA Professional at the Irv Warren Golf Course from 1950-2002. Donald was National
Golf Coach of the year in 1978 and was inducted into the Iowa PGA Golf Hall of
Fame in 1991, the Waterloo Golf Hall of Fame in 1996 and the Iowa High School
Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2003. Narveson was named State of Iowa
Biology Teach of the Year in 1970.
He is survived by his wife; sons, David (Debra)
Narveson of Princeton, New Jersey and Dann (Ruthann) Narveson of Houston, Texas;
daughter, Donna (Kent) Gerdes of Santa Clarita, California; a brother, James
(Marian) Narveson of Santa Clara, California; a sister, Dorothy Melvin of Plymouth,
North Carolina; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Anne Agnesta; and a brother, John Narveson.

Evelyne L. Fox, 91 of Forest City, died
on
Saturday, February 14, 2004, at the Concord Care Center in Garner.
Funeral services
will be held on Wednesday, February 18, at 10:30 a.m., at the United Methodist Church in Forest
City, with Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery in
Forest City. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, February 17, at the funeral
home and one hour prior to the services at the church. The Petersen Lund Funeral Home,
Forest City, is in charge of the arrangements.
Evelyne L., the daughter of John and Lulu
(Boyd) Reed, was born on August 19, 1912 in Richland. She grew up in Richland
and attended school there, graduating from the Richland High School in 1930.
After graduating, she moved to Hampton to work for her aunt in a boarding house
where she met Merle Fox. She was united in marriage to Merle on March 14, 1931
in Blue Earth, Minnesota. She and Merle lived their entire married lives in
Forest City. Evelyne worked many years at the Anderson Bakery and later as a
cook at Waldorf College.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in
Forest City for over 50 years.
Evelyne is survived by her daughter and
son-in-law, Melba and Galen Borchardt of Forest City; grandson, Mark Fox
and wife, Linda of Sapulpu, Oklahoma; four great-grandchildren; and a special
great-great grandson, Joseph Fox; and several nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Merle
in 1976; her parents John and Lulu Reed; three brothers, Alonzo, Wilford and
Dewey Reed; one sister, Harriet Reed; and a step-son and his wife, Delbert and
Marge Fox.

Kevin Kluver, 42

Kevin M. Kluver, 42, of Lake St. Louis, Missouri,
formerly of Crystal Lake, died on Saturday, February 14, 2004, at the Mercy Medical
Center-North Iowa in Mason City, as a result of a snowmobile accident east of
Scarville.
His funeral was held on Tuesday, February 17, at the United Methodist Church
in Crystal Lake, with the Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating. Music was provided by
pianist, Kristi Kirschbaum who accompanied soloist, Rev. Gary Marzolf and
congregational hymns. Ushers were Kent Kluver and Dale Bird. Honorary bearers
were Mike Isebrand, Rick Schmidt and Bob Anderson. Casket bearers were Jeff
Holland, John Joseph, Terry Derby, Dale Benson, Mike Hauan, Lynn Kluver, Brett
Kluver and Perry Kirschbaum. Burial was in the Crystal Township Cemetery in Crystal
Lake. The Cataldo Funeral Home in Britt was in charge of the arrangements.
Kevin Merle Kluver, the son of Merle Orren and
Karen Irene (Brown) Kluver, was born on April 22, 1961 at Forest City. He graduated
from the Woden-Crystal Lake High School in 1979 and UNI in Cedar Falls in 1983, with
a Degree in Business Administration. Following his graduation, he moved to
Dallas, Texas, where he worked at a bank. Kevin then continued his education in
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where he graduated from the FAA Academy. He moved to St.
Louis, Missouri, where he was employed as an air traffic controller at the Spirit of
St. Louis Airport. On August 12, 1988, he married Victoria A. Piskos at St.
Louis. They lived in Des Moines for a while where he worked as an air traffic
controller at the Des Moines International Airport. They then returned to St.
Louis where he was employed at the St. Louis Lambert International Airport.
Kevin enjoyed spending much of his time with his wife, children and being
active with his neighbors. He liked to landscape, play basketball, snowmobile
and help friends with numerous projects. He enjoyed spending his off duty time
with his family and friends in the Crystal Lake area, especially helping his
brother, Bruce, on the farm in the fall and getting together with his father,
Merle and his siblings as often as possible. Kevin had a strong sense of family
and even though he lived many miles away, he took the time to travel to the
people that were close to his heart. He was a member of the Crystal Lake United
Methodist Church, Lake Mills Snowmobile Club and the National Air Controllers
Association.
He is survived by his wife, Victoria Kluver and
their daughters, Ashley and Amber of Lake St. Louis, Missouri; father, Merle Kluver
of Garner; mother, Karen Kerr and husband, Bill of Waterloo; two brothers,
Bruce Kluver and wife, Marcia and their two children, Brett and Amber, all of
Crystal Lake and Tracy Kluver of Bettendorf; a sister, Toni Williams and
husband, Bryan and their two sons, Logan and Carson, all of Clear Lake; and many
other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his step-son, Jason
Schulte in 2002.

Snowmobile Crash Kills Missouri Man

SCARVILLE—A Missouri man
who formerly lived in Crystal Lake, died following a snowmobile accident late
Saturday night.
Kevin M. Kluver, 43, of Lake St. Louis, Missouri, was pronounced
dead at the scene of the accident by the Winnebago County medical examiner.
The accident occurred around 11:45 p.m. along County Road A16
about 1.5 miles east of Scarville.

Milton
Syse, 82

Milton D. Syse, age 82, of
Emmons, died on Monday, February 16, 2004, at the Lake Mills Care Center.
Funeral services were held on Friday, February 20, at the Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home. Mike Ellis
officiated. Interment was in the St. James Catholic Cemetery, Twin Lakes.
Milton Duwayne Syse, was born on March 17, 1921, to
Oscar and Carrie (Bell) Syse in Forest City. He attended schools in Forest City,
graduating from the Forest City High School in 1939. On May 15, 1971, Milton was
united in marriage to Joan McGuire at the St. James Catholic Church in Twin Lakes.
He had been a farmer and worked at Winnebago Industries. Milton was then
employed at Fleetguard in Lake Mills before retiring.
Survivors include his wife, Joan of Emmons;
sister, Alice Syse of Forest City; and nieces and nephews.
Milton was preceded in death by his parents;
his brother, Arne Syse; and his sister, Gertrude.

Heitland, 85

Ruth Heitland, 85,
died on Tuesday, February 17, 2004, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in
Mason City.
Funeral services were held on
Saturday, February 21, at the First Congregational Church in Buffalo Center, with Pastor
Bill Peake and Pastor Paul Haugen officiating. Interment was in the Graceland
Cemetery, with the Winter Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements. Special music was
provided by Phyllis Shortenhaus, Kathi Nelson and Emily Silber and
congregational hymns accompanied by Jan Missman, organist. Casket bearers were
Travis Dontje, Tim Heidecker, Larry Mountain, Carey Melz, Scott Heitland, Cdr.
Rick Mountain, Brandon Melz, Randy Melz.
Ruth Elaine, the daughter of Forest and Emma (Schauf)
Fisher, was born on September 11, 1918 at Forest City. Ruth grew up in the
Thompson area and graduated from the Thompson High School. On October 30, 1934, she
was united in marriage to George "Joe" Heitland Jr. at Mason City. Together they
made Buffalo Center their home, where they raised their family and lived in the
same house for 50 years. Ruth worked as a bookkeeper for the Buffalo Hotel, the
Buffalo Center Creamery, Allis Chalmers and later for the Larry Sapp Auction
Company.
She also was active in the VFW Auxiliary, the First Congregational
Church, Ladies Aid and the Ladies Literary Circle. Ruth also found joy in
sewing, gardening and cooking for her family. She looked forward to traveling to
California to visit her brothers and sisters and she loved to golf with Joe.
She is survived by her husband, George "Joe" Heitland of Buffalo Center; her children, Janell (Ivan) Heidecker of Lakota,
Diane (Bill) Mountain of Vernon Center, Minnesota, Connie (Harlan) Melzof Lakota,
Terry Heitland of Long Lake, Minnesota and Patricia (Gary) Dontje of Garner;
daughter-in-law, Adelia Heitland of Des Moines; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter; three
sisters, Doris Murphy of Vancouver, Washington, Faye Timms of Norwalk and Geraldine Goumas of Niacc, New York; sister-in-law, Ruth Fisher of Lake Mills; three brothers,
Marlin (Dell) Fisher of Thompson, Richard (Margaret) Fisher of Layfayette, Colorado
and Ramon (Joyce) Fisher of Humboldt; and by many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two
sons, Dennis and Greg; grandson, Troy Heidecker; three brothers, Maurice, Robert
and Carroll; and by two sisters, Gloria Winter and Dorothy Truman.

84, died on Tuesday, February 17, 2004, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa
in Mason City.
Funeral services were
held on Saturday, February 21, at the Fertile Lutheran Church in Fertile, with Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating. Burial was
in the Pilot Knob Lutheran Cemetery in rural Forest
City, with the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
Reva, the daughter of Chris and Laura (Hansen)
Jacobsen, was born on December 29, 1919, on a farm north of Clear Lake. She was
baptized and confirmed at the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. She graduated from
the
Clear Lake High School, Class of 1937 and then worked for four years at the Snow
White Market and one year for Mather's Grocery. On August 1, 1942, she married
Grant Anderson at the Ellington Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Garner. Upon
Grant's return from the service they farmed their entire married lives north of
Ventura.
Born to this union were four children, who
along with their spouses, survive, Gary (Ramona) Anderson of Fertile, Linda
(Craig) Ackarman of Ventura, Shirley (Beryl) Wubbena of Bristow and Bruce (Dianne)
of Forest City; ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two
sisters-in-law, Ardith (Edwin) Furness of Garner and Beverly (Roy)
Anderson of Ventura.
Reva was preceded in death by her husband, Grant
in 1987; her parents, Chris and Laura Jacobsen; a brother, Lyle who died in
infancy; a brother-in-law, Roy Anderson; and a brother and sister-in-law, Nordahl
and Irene Anderson; and a niece and three nephews.

Ronald
Yegge Sr., 75

Ronald Yegge Sr., 75, died on
Tuesday, February 17, 2004, at his home in Forest City.
A Funeral
Mass was held on Saturday, February 21, at the St. James Catholic Church in Forest City, with Fr. Jerry
Blake officiating. Burial will be in the spring in Buffalo Center, with the Petersen
Lund Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
Ronald Yegge Sr., was born on September 3, 1928
in Wesley, the son of Albert and Viola (Miller) Yegge. He was the second of nine
children. Ronald
served in the U.S. Army. On October 31, 1959, he was united in marriage to
Delores Rippentrop at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church. The couple made their home
in Buffalo Center, where Ron farmed for many years. Ron later began working at
Winnebago Industries where he remained for 15 years until retiring.
He enjoyed
spending time with his family, his grandchildren and being outdoors. He enjoyed
watching his favorite sports teams on television.
Ron is survived by his wife, Delores of Forest
City; sons, Ron Jr. of St. Charles, Minnesota and Jerry of San Antonio, Texas;

Marjorie
B. Clark, died on Tuesday, February 17,
2004, in Monroe, Washington, on her 71st birthday at the home of her son, Larry.
A
private funeral service will be held at a later date.
Marjorie, the daughter of James E. and Marie (Freerksen)
Shelton, was born on February 17, 1933 in Kanawha. Marjorie attended schools in the
Kanawha area and graduated from the Kanawha High School. She was united in marriage
to Leo Clark in Biloxi, Mississippi on June 22, 1951. They made their home in Seattle,
Washington.
She returned to Iowa in June 1990. Marjorie worked in the Stitchcraft
Department of Winnebago Industries. Marjorie was diagnosed with breast cancer in
1994 and moved to The Manor in Mason City. In February 2002, she returned to
Washington state.
Marjorie is survived by her son, Larry (Louise)
Clark of Monroe, Washington; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother,
James R. Shelton of Cedar Falls; a sister, Helen (Stanton) Brunes of Goodell; a
brother-in-law, Dayton Adreon of Britt; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two
sons, Lee and David; and three sisters, Dorothy, Lois and Carole.

Wallace A. Larson, age 76,
of Forest City, died on Friday, February 20, 2004, at the Muse Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 24, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest
City, with Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating. Inurnment will be in the spring in the
Oakland Cemetery in Forest City, with the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in charge of
the
arrangements.
Wallace Arthur, the son of Lauritz and Anna (Storre)
Larson, was born on April 28, 1927, on the family farm near Joice. Arthur
was baptized and confirmed at the Concordia Lutheran Church in Joice. He attended
elementary country school and graduated from the Joice High School. On November 9,
1952, he was united in marriage with Beverly Potter at the United Methodist
Church in Forest City. Wally lived and farmed with his family in Joice and then
worked for Winnebago Industries until his retirement. The couple moved to Forest
City in 1971.
Wally enjoyed music and dancing but loved working with his hands.
He made toys for all his grandchildren, from horses to doll houses. Wally never
met a stranger. He always had a kind word and a smile and loved helping people.
Wally is survived by his wife, Beverly Larson
of Forest City; a son, Stephen Larson of DeKalb, Illinois and his children, Dylan
and Anna of DeKalb and Nick of Altus AFB in Oklahoma; daughter, Kay and her
husband, Roger Lee of Leland and her children, Jennifer Hansen of Mosinee,
Wisconsin
and Lisa Hansen of Forest City; daughter, Barbara and her husband, Mark Wilson of
Battlefield, Missouri and their boys, Matt and Mike; a
sister, Maynis Aamodt and her husband, Carroll of Northwood; and two
sisters-in-law, Marilyn Larson of Clear Lake and Dorothy Larson of Mason City.
Wally was preceded in death by his parents; a
sister, Ivanell McKissick; three brothers, Leroy, Royden and Norman Larson; and a
daughter-in-law, Kristi Larson.

Walter
Gorman, 81

Walter Gorman, of Garner,
81, died on Sunday, February 22, 2004, at his home, following a battle with
cancer.
Memorial
service, were held on Tuesday, at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan, with Fr. Jerry
Blake officiating. Music was provided by organist, Carolyn Kumsher who
accompanied the church choir. Usher was Robert Kral. Casket bearers were
Walter's grandchildren and their spouses. Inurnment was in the Crystal Township
Cemetery, Crystal Lake, with military rites by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial
Unit. The Cataldo Funeral Home of Garner was in charge of the arrangements.
Walter Joseph, the son of Walter James and Ida (Ingalls)
Gorman, was born on October 24, 1922 at Haywarden. He grew up in Algona and graduated from
the
Algona High School in 1940. He continued his education at George Washington
University in Washington, D.C. and then worked for the FBI. Walter served his
country during WW II in the Merchant Marines for four years. Following his
honorable discharge, he returned home to Algona. On October 16, 1949, he was
united in marriage to Phylida Scanlan at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They
made their home in Algona, Ventura and in 1960, moved to Garner. Walter was
employed at Northern Natural Gas in Ventura for 35 years, before retiring in
1986.
He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed sitting on the front porch with his dog,
Chloe and visiting with friends and neighbors. His unbelievable "silly" stories
and unique sense of humor will be missed by all. He was a member of the St. Boniface
Catholic Church.
Walt is survived by his three children, Gena
(Fred) Greiman of Garner, Pat (Sharon) Gorman of Garner and Toni Gorman and
friend, Toni Castillo, both of San Antonio, Texas; eight grandchildren, Andrea Greiman and
fiancée, Todd Young of Garner, Brook (Charlie) Stokes of Austin,
Texas, Melissa Gorman and special friend, Bob Darg of Garner, Gail (Jeremy)
Gouge of Garner, Jamie Greiman and fiancée, Nick Christensen of Ankeny, Luke Greiman of Garner, Nicole (Brandon) Bruggeman of Klemme and Kate Gorman and
fiancée, Travis Nolte of Klemme; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Kathryn
Gorman of Burbank, California; and a niece, Kathy of California and her four
children.
He was preceded in death by wife, Phylida
on
January 21, 2002; his parents; a brother, Paul Gorman; a sister, Ruth Thilges;
and brothers-in-law, Bill Thilges and Ivan and Pat Scanlan.

Robert L. Coon, 88

Robert
L. Coon, 88, passed from this life on Sunday, February 22, 2004, at the home of his
beloved daughter, Carol, in West Des Moines.
A memorial service was held on Wedmesdau.
February 25, 2004, at the Soderstrum-Riis Funeral Home in Slater, a home that
Robert's grandparents owned at one time and Robert lived in as a child. Pastor
Gary Marzolf of the United Methodist Church of Forest City, read scriptures,
poems and sang. Burial was next to his wife, Doris, at the Sheldahl Cemetery.
The United Methodist Women's Society of Sheldahl served a luncheon at the United
Methodist Church of Sheldahl, which Robert attended as a child. He was loved by
many and will be missed.
Robert was born on June 28, 1915, in a
farmhouse south of Sheldahl to his parents, Ralph and Hazel (Sargent) Coon.
Originally from Sheldahl and Slater, Robert spent the last sixty years of his
life in Forest City. He married Doris Patterson in Des Moines, in June 1942.
Robert received a BA from Simpson College in 1941, a Master's Degree from
Colorado State, Greeley in 1945 and took 30 more hours of graduate work from
the University of Iowa and Iowa State, Ames.
His 39-year teaching career
included coaching at Blockton, teaching and coaching at Kellogg and 36 years at
Forest City teaching industrial arts, history, psychology, coaching and serving
as the high school's guidance counselor. He also started the first organized
summer youth recreation program. A career highlight was being selected to serve
on a committee of five by the State Department of Public Instruction during
1948-1950 to write the official industrial arts handbook for Iowa Schools. He
loved teaching and believed that education and learning never ends.
Robert was
past president of the Forest City Lions Club, Chairman of the Forest City
Board of Adjustment, president of Iowa Personnel and Guidance Association, Phi
Delta Kappa, Epsilon Pi Tau, Lambda Chi Alpha, president of Forest City
Education Association and co-coordinator of the Forest City chapter of American
Field Service (AFS).
He was a member of the United
Methodist Church of Forest City. He was always a nature enthusiast and loved
walking with his wife, Doris, at Pilot Knob State Park. He also had a special
kindness toward animals, caring for many birds and abandoned cats.
His daughter, Carol of West Des Moines;
his son, Robert Jr. of Australia; five grandchildren; two nephews; and a niece
survive Robert.
His wife, Doris; a brother, Richard Coon;
and a sister, Marilyn Ragan; preceded him in death.

Alvin Strand, 97

Alvin G. Strand, age 97, of Mesa, Arizona,
formerly of Forest City, died on Wednesday, February 25, 2004, at the Odyssey Hospice in
Mesa, Arizona.
Funeral services were held on Monday, March 1, at the Immanuel Lutheran
Church in Forest City, with Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating. Burial was in the Oakland
Cemetery in Forest City, with the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in charge of
the arrangements.
Alvin Gerhard Strand, the son of Ole and
Ingeborg (Aakre) Strand, was born on December 9, 1906 in Nordness (Decorah), Iowa.
He was baptized and confirmed (in Norwegian) at the Washington Prairie Lutheran
Church. Alvin attended rural school in Nordness and Washington Prairie Parochial
Schools. As a young man Alvin attended SDSU in Brookings, South Dakota, where he
learned the butter making trade and then found a job as butter maker first in
Kensett and later in Hanlontown. During WW II, Alvin served as an Army Air Force
Primary Flight Instructor at Jones Field in Bonham, Texas. Alvin married Eunice Erdal on May 23, 1943 in Rake. Alvin and Eunice made their home in Bonham, Texas,
until the end of the war and then moved to Forest City, where Alvin worked at the
Forest City Creamery until opening his own business called "Strand Dairy" which
he operated from 1946 to 1958. After selling his business he bought a farm. He
also did cabinet making at Forester Industries. After a few years of "snow
birding" they settled permanently in Mesa, Arizona.
Alvin faithfully sang in the
Victory Lutheran Church Choir for 17 years. In retirement, his big hobby was
helping neighbors and friends. He also enjoyed fixing bikes and leading an
exercise class. His longtime love of airplanes and flying never faded. Al
enjoyed looking at the WW II airplanes at Falcon Field in Mesa. He could identify
the plane by the sound of its engine.
Alvin is survived by his loving
wife of 60 years, Eunice; sons, Kenneth of Forest City and Mesa, John (Angie) of Kent, Washington,
Mark (Dorothy) of Tacoma, Washington and Tim (Sukey) of Juneau, Alaska; three
grandchildren, Jen (Frank) Kochenash of Bainbridge Island, Washington, Jonathan
(Ahna) Strand of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Theanne Strand of Tacoma, Washington.
He was preceded in death by his parents;
sisters, Ida, Hannah, Christine and Lettie; and brothers, Carl, Orlando
and Arnold.

Donald A. Bredeson, age 71, of Forest City, died
on
Wednesday, February 25, 2004, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
Funeral services were on Saturday, February 28, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest
City, with Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating.
Donald A. Bredeson, was born in Lake Mills
on June
4, 1932, the son of Arthur and Gladys (Howard) Bredeson. He received his
education in Forest City and entered the U.S. Army on September 7, 1949. He served
tours of duty in Korea, Okinawa and Germany. He taught ROTC at the Valley Forge
Military Academy for three years and did two tours of duty in Vietnam. He
retired from active military duty on May 31, 1971. He worked for 12 years at
Armor Swift-Eckrich in Britt. On August 13, 1965, he married Wanda Jensen in
Tacoma, Washington.
Don was a loving husband, father, grandfather and
great-grandfather who treasured time spent with his family. He was an avid
reader, loved to bowl with his friends and go fishing. He had an extensive pen
collection from all over the world, enjoyed music and dancing and spent many
hours bird-watching and building birdhouses. He was a member of the United
Methodist Church, the American Legion, the VFW, the VVA and the DAV.
Don is survived by his wife, Wanda Bredeson of
Forest City; children and their spouses, Lorry Jo (John) Zasada of Green
Bay, Wisconsin, Jeffery (Denise) Bredeson of Fertile and Dawn (Doug) Day of Forest
City; a foster-daughter, Jackie (Tracy) Levendusky of Osage; 10 grandchildren,
Jason, Jeremy and Jonathan Zasada, Logan and Jon Bredeson, Tonya and Corey
Phelps and Lindsi, Emili and Dustin Day; seven great-grandchildren, Cody,
Nathan, Lucas, Dakota and Gage Zasada, Kaleb Wasick and Benjamin Cook; and three
foster-grandchildren, Tate, Wade and Joy Levendusky; two brothers,
Marshall (Sherry) Bredeson of Leland and Dale Bredeson of Estherville; two
brothers-in-law, Dean (Bev) Jensen of Burnsville, Minnesota and Jerry (Stella)
Jensen of Abiline, Texas; sister-in-law, Iola (Ray) Sunie of Hamilton,
Ala.; and many nieces and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; his
mother and father-in-law, Logan and Lucille Jensen; sister-in-law, Donna Bredeson; and several uncles and aunts.

Dorothy V. Krominga,
died on Thursday, February 26, 2004, in Titonka.
Funeral services were
held at the United Methodist Church in Titonka, on Monday, March 1, with Rev. Robin
L. Thomas officiating. Interment was in the Buffalo Township Cemetery, with the
Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements. Organist,
Edith Tieman accompanied soloist, Pastor Thomas and congregational hymns. Casket
bearers were Tom Prentice, Dan Frerichs, Jason Lane, Brian Hobbs, Clay Hobbs
and Jason Doege.
Dorothy Viola Hobbs Krominga, was born
on May 9,
1921 at rural Crystal Lake, to Earl and Alvina (Hansmeier) Hobbs. She was baptized and confirmed in Crystal Lake.
She graduated from the Crystal Lake School. Dorothy was united in marriage to
Orville Gene Krominga on September 23, 1944 in Mineral Wells, Texas. They raised
two sons, Vaughn and Kent. Dorothy spent her time at home caring for her boys
when they were growing up. Later she worked at the hardware store they owned and
operated, as a school aide, a city hall aide and at the public library. She also
sold Avon.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the VFW
Auxiliary. Dorothy loved gardening, cooking, reading and had a great love for
her dogs and wildlife. She was always willing to help anyone in need.
Dorothy is survived by one son, Kent and his
wife, Roxie of Forest City; four granddaughters, Deanna Heidt and her husband,
Steve, Regina Prentice and her husband, Tom, Marcie Krominga and Katie Frerichs
and her husband, Dan, all of Titonka; six great-grandchildren, Jacob Prentice,
Maya Prentice, Madison Krominga, Taylor Heidt, Cassidy Heidt and Cedric Frerichs;
three brothers, Raymond (Marge) Hobbs of Britt, Clyde (Jerry) Hobbs of Crystal
Lake and James (Lilah) Hobbs of Crystal Lake; one sister, Janice (Lyle) Doege of
Woden; cousin, Calvin (Gerry) Hansmeier of Crystal Lake; and many nieces, nephews and
friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one
son, Vaughn; and a niece, Jolene Hobbs.

Lester Leerar, 67, of Britt,
died on Saturday, February 28, 2004, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa,
West Campus, in Mason City.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 2, at
the St. Patrick's
Catholic Church in Britt, with Father Michael Schueller officiating. Burial was
in the St. John's Cemetery in Duncan, with the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home in charge of
the arrangements.
Lester, the son of
Herman and Lula (Jackson) Leerar, was born on December 23, 1936 in rural Britt. He attended country school and
the Britt High School. Following high
school, he began farming with his parents. Lester Leerar was united in marriage
with Teresa Nedved on October 3, 1960, at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan.
The couple farmed in the Britt and Bancroft areas until they moved to Britt in
1975.
Lester was involved with agriculture by operating a custom grain business. He
later was employed by Snap-on Tools and later Winnebago Industries, retiring in
1997.
He enjoyed
spending time with his children, grandchildren and his dog, Buddy. He looked
forward to trips to Branson, Missouri with his wife and being outdoors, going
fishing and camping.
Lester is survived
by his wife, Teresa; five children, Monte (Tammy) Leerar of Britt, Marlene
(Herman) Henning of Leland, Jon (Marlene) Leerar of Britt, Cory (Jolene) Leerar
of Britt and Jason (Joanie) Leerar of Algona; 14 grandchildren; his mother,
Lula Leerar of Britt; four sisters, Leona (Thomas) Welter of Corwith, Darlene
Day of Britt, Linda (Charles) Foy of Odebolt and Vicki (Charles) Trunkhill of
Algona; two brothers, Duane (Paulette) Leerar of Garner and Larry (Lorna) Leerar of Britt;
and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in
death by his father, Herman; and two sons, Marty and Mark.
