Fatal accident
claims Forest City student
October 9, 2002
|

Fire and rescue
personnel work at the scene of the semi-car crash east of
Forest City Wednesday afternoon. |
FCHS homecoming activities postponed for
four weeks.
Funeral services were held on Saturday for Darci Hersleff,
15, at the St. James Catholic Church in Forest City.
Hersleff died at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason
City, following a semi-car accident Wednesday, on Highway 9 east
of Forest City. Hersleff was a passenger in a car driven by
Laura Pederson, 15, of Fertile, who was also taken to Mercy
Medical Center.
Pederson was listed in critical condition following the
crash, but was upgraded to serious condition on Monday.
Counselors from the school system, area churches and the area
education association were at the Forest City High School on
Thursday to help students and staff deal with the loss of Hersleff. A community-wide interdenominational church service
was held Thursday evening for Hersleff at St. James. The service
allowed many students the opportunity to speak about memories of
Hersleff.
"It helped the healing process," Forest City Superintendent
Dwight Pierson said of the service and funeral. "It was a
fitting way to recognize the loss of a person that the school
community thought was very endearing."
Hersleff was the Sophomore Class
President and a member of
the cross country, basketball and softball teams. Homecoming
activities were postponed following the accident on Wednesday.
The Forest City homecoming football game will now be played
November 1, at 7:30 p.m., against Hampton-Dumont. The coronation of
the homecoming king and queen will be October 29, at 8 p.m., in the
high school gymnasium. That will be followed by the jersey
auction.
The advisor/advisee luncheon will be on noon on November 1. That
Friday will also feature a pep rally at 1:00 p.m. and a parade at 2:00
p.m. The homecoming dance will be Saturday, November 2, from 8:00 p.m.
to midnight.
The accident occurred Wednesday at 3:45 p.m., at the
intersection of Highway 9 and county road S14. Pederson's car
was heading north on S14 and had stopped at the junction with
Highway 9. The car then pulled out into the path of a westbound
semi driven by Chad Nordskog of Forest City.
The truck, which was loaded with gravel, struck the car on
the right side. Both vehicles came to rest in the ditch north
and west of the intersection.
Nordskog was also transported to Mercy Medical Center, where
he was treated and released.
Hersleff and Pederson were both wearing their seat belts at
the time of the accident.
Assisting the Iowa State Patrol at the scene were the
Winnebago County Sheriff's Department, Worth County Sheriff's
personnel, the Forest City, Hanlontown and Fertile First
Responders and the Forest City Ambulance.
