SANTA ANA, CA-Hazel E. Smutz, of Santa Ana, California, passed away
on Thursday,
January 3, 2002, at the age of 98.
She was born in rural Corwith, on August 23, 1903.
She graduated from the Corwith High School in 1923.
She is survived by
two daughters, Beverly Scott of Chicago, Illinois and Mavis (Scott) Shroeder and husband, Robert of Kanawha.

Wilfred Schmidt, 74
January 9, 2002
TITONKA-Wilfred "Whip" Schmidt, 74, of Titonka,
died on Monday, January 7, 2002, at the Good Shepherd Home
in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., today Wednesday, January 9, at
the Immanuel
Lutheran Church in Titonka. The Rev. Arlen Lloyd will officiate. Music will be
provided by soloist, Bruce Wubben and Anita Eden, organist.
Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Jeffrey Schmidt,
Scott Schmidt, Ashley Formanek and Chelsey Formanek. Inurnment
will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery, Titonka, with
military graveside rites conducted by the Kennedy VFW Post 4071 and
American Legion Post 628.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene of Titonka; one son, Bob
and wife, Colleen Schmidt of Woden; one daughter, Chris Formanek
and husband, Randy of Garner; four grandchildren, Jeffrey Schmidt,
Scott Schmidt, Ashley Formanek and Chelsey Schmidt; one brother,
Bernard Schmidt of Woden; and one sister, Marjorie Follman and
husband, LaVerl of Titonka.

Paul Nordskog, 79
January 9, 2002
NEVADA-Paul Fredolph Nordskog, 79, of
Nevada,
died on Monday, January 7, 2002, at the Israel Family
Hospice House in Ames, of brain cancer.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, January 10, at
the Memorial Lutheran
Church. The Reverends Myron D. Herzberg and Ray Runkel will
officiate. The body will be cremated following the service and
burial of the cremains will be held at a later date in the Roland
Cemetery. Visitation will be today, Wednesday, Januay 9, after 3:00
p.m., with family present from 6-8:00 p.m., at the Chet Ryan Mortuary
in Nevada.
Survivors include his wife, Iva Nordskog of Nevada; a daughter,
Martha Nordskog of Redondo, Beach, California; two sons, Joseph Nordskog
of Phoenix, Arizona and Stephen Nordskog of Leland; a
step-daughter, Joan Nyguard of Ames; a step-son, Steve Nyguard of
Maple Grove, Minnesota; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 10
great-grandchildren; three sisters, Shirley Wilson of Phoenix,
Arizona, Judith Johnson of Mission, Kansas and Lou Ann Donhowe of
Mission, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial fund has been established for the Memorial Lutheran
Church, American Cancer Society or the Israel Family Hospice
House.

FOREST CITY-Paul C. Olson, 74, of Forest City,
died on Tuesday, January 8, 2002, at his home in Mesa,
Arizona.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., today, Wednesday, January 16, at
the Immanuel
Lutheran Church in Forest City. The Rev. Lee Laaveg will officiate. Burial will be in
the
Oakland Cemetery, Forest City, with the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in
charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife of almost 51
years; three children, Timothy and his wife, Michelle and their
children, Paul, Elizabeth and Luther, of Ankeny; Susan Kerr and
her husband, Mark and their children, Sarah and Paul, of Florence,
Wisconsin and Deborah Olson-Bopes and her husband, Robert
Bopes and step-children, Andrew and Amanda of Clinton; one sister,
Lillian Phillips of Elk Run Heights; one brother, Tom Olson of Des
Moines; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be given to Dollars for Scholars at the Forest
City Community Schools or to the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest
City.

January 16, 2002
BOONE-Dean L. Nerem, 73, of Boone,
died on Wednesday, January 9, 2002, at his home, due to
complications of Lou Gehrig's Disease.
Funeral services were
held on Saturday, January 12, at the Augustana Lutheran Church in Boone.
The Rev. Doug Duin officiated. Interment was in the Madison Township
Cemetery in Forest City, with Pastor Lee Laaveg officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Mary of Boone; two sons, John Nerem and his wife, Jeri of Boone and Brad Nerem of Madrid; two
daughters, Mardene Belaidi of Valley Park, Missouri and Dr. DeAnn
Nerem of Madrid; 10 grandchildren; one sister, Jane Buffington of
St. Charles, Missouri; along with nieces and nephews.

WEBSTER CITY-William "Bill" Hughes,
died on Friday, January 11, 2002, at the Crestview Care
Center in Webster City.
Funeral services are
planned for Tuesday, January 15, at the Our Savior Lutheran Church in
Stanhope. Rev. Joseph A. Lambert
is to officiate. Burial is in the Neese family cemetery.
His
survivors include three sons and one daughter: Roger Hughes of
Forest City, one grandson; Craig and Denise Hughes of Webster City,
two grandchildren; Jim and Karlene Hughes of Boone, three
grandchildren; Holly Hughes of Boulder, Colorado; and former
daughter-in-law, Vicki Hughes and one grandson of Marion.

Lake Mills,
died on Friday, January 11, 2002, at the Muse Norris Hospice
Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services were held on Monday, January 14, at the Salem Lutheran Church in
Lake Mills.
The Reverends Kevin Mackey and Roger Dykstra officiated. Burial
was in the Bristol Cemetery, rural Joice, with the Mittelstadt Funeral
Home in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her son,
Kermit Trustem; her daughter, Rose Ann and her husband, Dennis
Hill, all of Lake Mills; five grandchildren, Jerry Hill of Lake
Mills, Jeffrey Hill and his wife, Kim of Austin, Texas, Audra and
her husband, Chris Stambaugh of Rollingstone, Minnesota, Jennifer Trustem and Laura Trustem, both of McKinleyville, California; two
great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Joshua Hill of Austin, Texas;

CRYSTAL LAKE-Minnie R. Krull, 94 of
Crystal Lake,
died on Saturday, January 12, 2002, at the Kavanagh House in
Des Moines.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 15, at the Crystal Lake United
Methodist Church. The Rev.
Gary Marzolf officiated. Burial was in the Olena Mound Cemetery in
Buffalo Center, with the Cataldo Funeral Home in charge of
the arrangements.

BANCROFT-Alfred Francis Menke, 89, passed away on Saturday,
January 12, 2002 at the
Heritage Nursing Home in Bancroft, where he had been a resident
for two months.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 16, at
10:30 a.m., at the St. John's Catholic Church in Bancroft, with Father
Paul D. Bormann and Rev. Phil Doocy officiating.
He is survived
by his wife of 66 years, Amorita of Bancroft; eight children,
Jane Wesselman and her husband, LeRoy of Webster City, Carol
Madson and the late Holger Madson of Britt, Harold Menke and his
wife, Barbara of Bancroft, Joyce Hatten and the late Tom Hatten of
Bancroft, Ken Menke and his wife, Mary of Ledyard, Bill Menke and
his wife, Barb of Bancroft, Lynn Lynch and her husband, Roman of
Ames and Shirley McCarthy and her husband, Denny of Bancroft; 50
grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Richard Menke
and John Menke, both of Bancroft; one sister, Janet Winkel of
Whittmore; and many nieces and nephews.

Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Duncan. The Rev. Michael Schueller officiated.

include his wife of 55 years, Alice of Garner; nine children,

of Osage, formerly of Lake Mills,
died on Monday, January 14, 2002, at the Mercy Medical
Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
Funeral services were held on Friday, January 18, at the
Lake Mills Synod Lutheran Church. The Rev. Karl Hermanson
officiated. Burial was in the Center Cemetery, rural Lake Mills.
Survivors include three daughters, Shirley Martinson of Osage,
Marjorie and her husband, John Melin and Phyllis and her husband,
Bruce Hanak, all of Alexandria, Minnesota; her son, Wayne and his wife,
Karen of Elysian, Minnesota; one son-in-law, Richard Wolters of
Mankato; 14 grandchildren, Christine Straate, Cathy Woodiwiss,
Monica Ring, Meta Weber, Paul Martinson, Nan Frost, Sue Forrey,

the Silver Lake Lutheran Church officiated. Cremation followed at
the
Cremation Services of North Iowa in Mason City.

include his mother, Bridget Neilon of Northwood; his father, Jerry
Roberts of Lake Mills; his step-father, Alan Neilon of Albert Lea,
Minnesota; special friend, JoAnna Pehrson; two brothers, Michael I.
Larson of Fort Worth, Texas and Wade Roberts and his special
friend, Jennifer Heyer of Cedar Falls; his maternal grandparents,
Lila Gossman of Buffalo Center and Duane Gossman of Thompson; his

KLEMME-Ida Mae Bock, 82, of Klemme, died on Friday, January 18,
2002, at the Westview Care Center in Britt.
Funeral services were held at 10:30
a.m., on Monday, January 21, at the Immanuel Reformed United Church of
Christ in Klemme, with Pastor Donna Buckman officiating. Music was
provided by organist, Diane Stadtlander who accompanied soloist,
Lance Arnold. Ushers were Richard Baack and Terry Woiwood. Casket
bearers were Andrew Jones, Eric Daniel, Mike Carlson, Justin Rule,
Jay Duncan and Verlyn Kaduce. Interment was in the Ell Township
Cemetery, Klemme. The Cataldo Funeral Home was in charge of
the arrangements.
Ida Mae is survived by her four children, Jim Bock and his
wife, Barbara of Fairmont, Minnesota, Joyce Lee and her husband,
Dennis of Dayton, Ohio, Jo Duncan and her husband, Royle of Alden
and Jean McBreen and her husband, Steven of Ames; eight
grandchildren, Laura Bock-Carlson, Susan Bock, Michelle Daniel,

January 23, 2002
LAKE MILLS-Truman Gavle, 90, of Lake Mills,
died on Saturday, January 19, 2002, at the Lake Mills Care
Center.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., on Thursday, January 24, at
the Emmons Lutheran
Church in Emmons, Minnesota. The Rev.
Julie Fiske will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Lawn Cemetery,
Emmons. Visitation is from 4-7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, at the Mittelstadt
Funeral Home in Lake Mills and again one hour prior to the services
at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be to
the Hospice
of North Iowa.
Survivors include his loving wife of 68 years, Viola of Lake
Mills; sons, Allan and his wife, Jan of Scottsdale, Arizona and
Tim and his wife, Maria of Moron, Spain; daughters,
Pauline and her husband, Paul Calahan of Stone Lake, Wisconsin and Lola and her
husband, Forest Brown of Bloomington, Minnesota; 17 grandchildren;
four step-grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

LAKE MILLS-Clara O. Hipp, 82, of Lake
Mills,
died on Monday, January 21, 2002, at the Muse Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services were held on Friday, January 25, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake
Mills. The Rev. Roger Dykstra officiated. Burial was in
the Beaver
Creek Cemetery, rural Joice.
Survivors include her brother,
Harold Arthur of Lake Mills; her brother-in-law, James Foss of
Richland, Washington; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces,
great-nephews and many special friends.

FOREST CITY-Alice M. Donohue, 84,
formerly of Forest City,
died on Monday, January 21, 2002, at the Manor Care in
Westerville, Ohio.
Funeral services were held on Friday, January 25, at the Forest
Evangelical Lutheran Church in Forest City. The Rev. Theodore Gullixson officiated. Burial
was in the Madison Township Cemetery in rural Forest City, with
the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors
include two sons, James Donohue and wife, Janice Collette of
Gahanna, Ohio and David Donohue and wife, Linda of Roland; four
grandchildren, Trent and his wife, Jenny, Kevin, Jason and Jenni;
a great-grandchild, Marin; brother, Henry Geilenfeld and wife,
Maybelle; sisters-in-law, Marie Stokesbary, Cora Donohue and Marie
Donohue; brother-in-law, Richard Donohue and wife, Betty; and many
cousins, nieces and nephews.

died on Monday, January 21, 2002, at the Sharp Coronado
Hospital in Coronado, California.

Friday, February 1, at the West Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Leland. The Rev.
Clarence Baalson officiated.
Survivors include cousins, Donald
Swenson, Alan Swenson, Dick Swenson, Adolph Swenson, Gerald Hill,
Roger Hill, Dennis Hill, Clifton Hill, Janice Fleetwood, Phyllis
Hinton and Barbara Flatgard as well as other cousins; uncles, Kenneth
Olsen and Russell Olsen; and aunts, Doris Flatgard and Elaine Hill.

FAIRVIEW, OH-Rose Mae (Faltus) Denzel, 90, of Fairview Park,
Ohio, died on Tuesday, January 22, 2002, at the Lakewood Hospital in Lakewood, Ohio,
following a two-month illness.
A memorial service will be held this summer, time
and date to be announced.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary Jo
Johnson and husband, James C. of North Olmsted, Ohio; her son,
Richard Paul and wife, Nikki L. of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; five
grandchildren, Kent J. Johnson and wife, Cindy of Tallmadge, Ohio,
Douglas J. Johnson of Cleveland, Ohio, Elizabeth Denzel of Largo,
Florida, Katherine Denzel of Eden Prairie, Minnesota and Jennifer Denzel
of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; four great-grandchildren, Kyle James
Johnson, Sara Elizabeth Johnson, Darby Sarah Johnson and Taylor
Davis; a sister, Henrietta Brabec of Albert Lea, Minnesota; a
sister-in-law, Evelyn Faltus of Leland, Ohio; and five nieces and
nephews.

Lee Roy Williams, 75
January 30, 2002
LIVINGSTON, TX-Lee Roy Williams, 75, of Livingston, Texas,
died on Thursday, January 24, 2002, at the Veterans Hospital in Houston, Texas.
Lee Roy Williams, the
son of Ray and Ruby Williams, was born on October 14, 1926 in Great
Falls, Montana. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during
WW II and during the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include his sons and daughter-in-law, Rev. Steve and
Janet Williams of Nevada and Mark Williams of Half Moon Bay,
California, Daniel Williams of Forest City; daughter and son-in-law,
Sue and Larry Nation of Sugarland, Texas; brother, Robert Williams
of Rosemead, California; nine grandchildren; and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jerri Williams in 1985; his parents; two brothers; and two sisters.
Private family services will be held at a later date.

CLEAR LAKE-Jack L. Canady, 84, of Clear Lake,
died on Saturday, January 26, 2002, at the Muse Norris
Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, February 2, at
the Zion Lutheran Church,
Clear Lake. The Rev. Peter Narum will
officiate. Inurnment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery. Family
will greet friends from 4-7:00 p.m., on Friday, at the Ward-Van Slyke
Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake. Memorials may be given to the Galilean Lutheran Church for the
stained glass windows or to the Muse-Norris Hospice of North Iowa.
Survivors include his wife, Dee Canady of Clear Lake; three
daughters, Jackie Weinzetl and her husband, Jim of Plymouth,
Minnesota, Sandy McHugh and her husband, Jim of Ft. Collins,
Colorado
and Sally Peyton and her husband, Bob of Elkhorn, Nebraska; 11
grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., today, Wednesday, January 30, at the Civic
Auditorium in Forest City. Burial will be
in the Oakland Cemetery in Forest City, with the Petersen Lund Funeral
Home in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his children
and their spouses, Robert and Sharon Eames of Forest City and
Lois Turner and husband, Darrell of Iola, Kansas; five grandchildren,
Carmen Schaben and husband, Thad of Urbandale, Jenny Scott and
husband, Abe of Lexington, Kentucky, Wade Eames and friend, April Sowder
of Ames, Elaine Turner of Iola, Kansas and Darin Turner and wife,
Jessica of Tyler, Texas; a sister, Vivalore Gantt of Lyon, Illinois;

died on Tuesday, January 29, 2002, at his home.
Funeral services were held on Friday, February 1, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake
Mills. The Rev. Karl Hermanson officiated.
Burial was in the Center Cemetery, rural Lake Mills, with military rites
conducted by the Lake Mills Otto/Chose Post 235. The Mittelstadt Funeral
Home was in charge of the arrangements.

MILWAUKEE, WI-Alfred Roberts, 59, a
resident of Forest City for 12 years,
died on Thursday, January 31, 2002.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, February 6, at the Molthen-Bell and Sons Funeral Home in South Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The
Rev. Harlyn Kuschel presided. Burial was in the Forest Hill Memorial
Park.
Roberts was a proud Vietnam veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Roseann (Dionne) Roberts; his son,
Chad Michael and his wife, Amy; a sister, Gracie Bowles; along with
other relatives and friends.
