ATKINSON - A Mass of Christian Burial for William "Jay"
T. Burke, Jr. of Fort Atkinson was held at 10:30 a.m. on
Monday, Jan. 31, 2011 at St. John's Catholic Church in
Fort Atkinson with Rev. Marvin Salz officiating. The
lector was Stephen Rausch, the organist was Kristina
Nienhaus. The music was, "Be Not Afraid", "Peace is
Flowing", "Only a Shadow" and "How Great Thou Art".
Offertory gifts were carried by Alejandro Pinto, Katie
Bertness and Shannon Schultz. Eucharistic ministers were
Carole Burke, Marge Meyer, Tom and Connie Frana.
Pallbearers were Greg Frana, Kevin Bertness, Luis Pinto,
Ed Brannan, Shin Yang, Mark Schultz, Al Schmitt and Paul
Martin. Honorary pallbearers were Duane Bouska, Neil
Grube, Jim Coffin and friends. Interment was in St.
John's Catholic Cemetery in Fort Atkinson.
Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, Chekal Chapel in Fort
Atkinson handled the arrangements.
Jay, 51, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2011 at the Winneshiek
Medical Center in Decorah from complications of
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
William Thomas Burke, Jr., was born May 9, 1959, in New
Hampton, the son of William and Carole (Meyer) Burke.
Jay attended St. Mary's Catholic School in Waucoma and
graduated from Turkey Valley High School in 1977. He
attended Area One and received a degree in the Farm
Implement Program. He worked at Schmitt Implement in
Fort Atkinson for a couple of years, and then became an
instructor in the John Deere Ag Tech Program at NICC in
Calmar for the last 20 years.
On Dec. 30, 1992 he married Theresa Martin and
they made their home in Fort Atkinson. Jay enjoyed
restoring two cylinder John Deere tractors, going to
area tractor shows, and doing things with his family
outdoors.
Jay is survived by his wife: Theresa Burke of Ft.
Atkinson; three daughters: Sheena (Greg) Frana of
Rochester, Minn., Amanda (Stephen Rausch) Burke of Des
Moines and Kayla Burke of Ft. Atkinson; one son: Zachary
Burke of Ft. Atkinson; one granddaughter: Cloe; his
parents: Bill and Carole Burke of Waucoma; four sisters:
Shari (Mark) Schultz of Storm Lake, Juli Ann (Kevin)
Bertness of Batavia, Ill., Jane (Luis) Pinto of
Warrenville, Ill. and Rebecca (Shin) Yang of Madison,
Ala.; along with many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Dan and
Laura Meyer and Tom and Bessie Burke.

- A Mass of Christian Burial for Joseph
"Joe" A. Ryant of Spillville was held at
10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011 at
St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in
Spillville with Rev. Donald Hawes
officiating. The lector was Denise Ryant,
the organist was Doris Thompson and
cantor was Dan Silhacek. St. Wenceslaus
choir sang "Here I am Lord", "Amazing
Grace", "On Eagles Wings", "Goin Home"
and "How Great Thou Art". Eucharistic
ministers were Phyllis Mashek, Chad
Kuboushek, Joe Hauber and Dwayne Hauber.
Joe's grandchildren were offertory
giftbearers and pallbearers. Interment
was in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery
in Spillville.
Balik Funeral Home in Spillville handled
the arrangements.
Joseph, 84, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2011
at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.
Joseph Anthony Ryant was born March 1,
1926, the son of Frank and Mary (Pizinger)
Ryant on a farm near Fort Atkinson. At
one year of age, the family moved
northwest of Spillville. He attended
rural country school for two years and
then St. Wenceslaus Catholic School thru
the eighth grade. He farmed with his
father for several years. After the
early death of his father, he and his
mother farmed together.
On Oct. 17, 1950 he married Romana
Zeien at North Washington, Iowa. They
farmed for 37 years and moved into
Spillville in 1988. Joe served on the
Winneshiek County Extension Council for
two terms. He was the first farmer in
the area to own a round baler and was
the first to introduce Charolais cattle
to the area. Joe was a member of Branch
#33, of the Catholic Workman and served
as president for six years. He also sold
insurance for them for many years. Joe
and Romana were sales representatives
for Furst McNess for 20 years.
Joe's survivors include his wife: Romana
Ryant of 60 years of Spillville; three
daughters: Pat Pinter of Cresco, Judy
(Richard) Jessen of Ankeny and Karen
(Michal) Hutzel of Mason City; three
sons: Francis (Donna) Ryant of Cresco,
James (Denise) Ryant of Spillville and
Gary (Jane) Ryant of Ridgeway; 16
grandchildren: Jeff Hulsebus, Dawn
(Othello) Rollon, Dana (Joe) Karasek,
Chad (Kristin) Pinter, Shane (Elisa)
Pinter, Sara (Noah) Parr, Anne (Carl)
Piper, Chris (Bonnie) Jessen, Michelle,

Palmersheim was born on
the family farm in Burr
Oak on Oct. 21, 1918 the
daughter of Thomas and
Marie (Cashman) Knox.
She graduated from
Decorah High school in
1937. After graduating
from high school she
obtained her teacher's
certificate, taught two
years in a rural school
in Winneshiek County,
Immaculate Conception in
Elma for two years, New
Haven for five years,
Staceyville-New Haven
combined school for one
year and for several
summers taught under
Title 1 at Osage
Community School. She
taught for 16 years at
the Alta Vista Center in
the New Hampton School
District. She received
her BA in Education at
Upper Iowa University in
Fayette, and completed
advance work at the
University of Iowa,
University of Northern
Iowa and Drake
University. Genevieve's
inspiration to enter the
teaching profession was
largely attributable to
her mother and her four
sisters, all of whom
were teachers.
On May 16, 1940,
she married John
Freidhof at Our Lady of
Lourdes Church in
Lourdes. To this union
six children were born.
On January 4, 1992, she
married Peter
Palmersheim at
Immaculate Conception
Church in Elma.
Genevieve was a resident
of Elma for 42 years and
was a member of IC
Rosary Society,
Tomorrow's Study Club,
ARC, bridge club, served
on the Care Review
Committee for
Comprehensive Systems,
ACCW and various
Scouting committees. She
was also a member of St
Pius Rosary Society and
enjoyed playing bridge
with the St. Pius Bridge
Club. Genevieve enjoyed
living her faith, doing
the Jumble puzzle,
music, watching sporting
events especially tennis
and Iowa Hawkeyes. She
especially loved her
family and collecting
bears.

Barn.

enjoyed

cards,

500. He
was a
former
member
of the
Madison
Lutheran
Church
and a
current
member

Decorah
Lutheran
Church.

WATERLOO - Dorothy M. Drilling died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2011 at her home in Waterloo. She was cremated and services will be held at a later date with inurnment in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.
Dorothy Marie Drilling was born Sept. 7, 1924 at the family farm home in Cresco, the daughter of Ferd and Leona (Herold) Drilling. Dorothy attended St. Joseph's church and school and graduated from Cresco High School in 1942.
Dorothy retired from KWWL TV and the Black Hawk Broadcasting Co. in Waterloo where she spent her entire business career.
Dorothy is survived by two sisters: Loraine O'Hearn of St. Louis, Mo. and Eileen Drilling of Coon Rapids, Minn; two brothers: Vern Drilling of Minnetonka, Minn. and Robert Drilling of Clive; and many nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers: Gene Drilling and Alvin Drilling.
Harlan Stevenson, 81

 LIME SPRINGS - A memorial service for Harlan R. Stevenson was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011 at the United Methodist Church in Lime Springs. Interment will be held in the spring at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs.
Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.
Harlan, 81, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2011 at Regional Health Services in Cresco.
Harlan Ross Stevenson was born Nov. 22, 1929, the son of M. Ross Stevenson and Laura Irene (Larsen) Stevenson on a farm near Maple Leaf. His education began in the country schools of Howard County. In 1942 the Stevenson family moved to a farm near Lime Springs and shortly thereafter Harlan entered grade school in Lime Springs. He graduated from the Lime Springs High School in 1950. As a young child, a teenager and as an adult, Harlan worked long hours on the family farm.
On Nov. 3, 1951, he married Phyllis Jane Johnson at the United Methodist Church in Lime Springs. They have lived in their present home in Lime Springs for 53 years. Previously they resided in Lawton, Okla. for two years while Harlan served in the U.S. Army.
Harlan began his farming operation in 1951. He loved the land and enjoyed his chosen occupation until his retirement in 2006 due to health issues.
He was a regular attendant of the United Methodist Church and had served as Trustee and was currently Head Usher. Harlan was leader of the local boy's 4 H club. He loved sports and coached the Lime Springs Men's Softball Team for many years. He was a member and Past Master of the Masonic Lodge and served many years on the Lime Springs Fire Department. Presently he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Howard Cancer Association (HoCA) and was currently Vice President of the Lidtke Mill Board of Directors and loved the many hours he spent guiding tourists through this National Historic Site.
Other hobbies included bowling, snowmobiling, reading and dear to his heart was his collection of John Deere memorabilia. Harley and Phyl were youth leaders in the United Methodist Church for eight years.
Family centered is the term which best describes Harlan's active lifestyle. He never missed a basketball, softball, volleyball game, band performance, vocal concert, or Lime Springs Children's Theatre Troupe presentation in which his daughter or granddaughters were participants.
He is survived his wife Phyl; daughter: Laney; granddaughters: Kari and Sarah; and great-grandson: Tyler of Tiffin, Iowa, Lindsey of Stewartville, Minn., Kristen (Chip) of Lime Springs, Husni and Claudia Merhi of Ankeny, Deah and Ben Tindall, Julie, Samantha and William of Madrid, Iowa, Diane Merhi of Des Moines; brother and sister: Gene and Mildred of Lime Springs, sisters-in law: Shirley Stevenson of Rochester, Minn., Mary Stevenson of Lime Springs and Ann Stevenson of Stewartville.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and brothers: Hollis, Lyle and Norman.

 LANSING - Funeral services for Marie K. Zimmerman of Lansing, formerly of Waukon were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon with Fr. Joseph Schneider and Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg officiating. Pallbearers were Scott Kreitzer, Dave Zimmerman, Dean Bakke, Steve Bakke, Ron Lippe and Merle Hershberger. Interment was in St. Mary's Lycurgus Cemetery in rural Waukon.
Friends were to call from 3-7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. There was a scripture service at 3 p.m.
Marie, 95, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011 at Thornton Manor in Lansing.
Marie Kathryn Zimmerman was born May 24, 1915, in Waukon, the oldest daughter of Leo and Stella (Haas) Dougherty. She attended St. Patrick Catholic High School and graduated from Waukon High School in 1932.
On June 8, 1937, she married Herbert William Zimmerman at St. Mary's Catholic Church Lycurgus. They farmed in the Lansing area and moved from the farm to Waukon in 1980. Marie was employed with the Allamakee Community School District in food service from 1960-1985, becoming the Director of the Food Service Department.
Marie was proud of her Irish heritage and always welcomed family and friends into her home. Cream puffs and cloverleaf rolls were a favorite of many guests. In addition to being a talented baker, Marie also kept busy with many embroidery and crochet projects. Following her retirement, she continued to volunteer, always willing to help at the Waukon Senior Center, hospital auxiliary, nursing homes, church functions, and the hot lunch program at St. Patrick Catholic School. She enjoyed playing cards and was a member of several card clubs. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and following their many activities over the years.
Marie is survived by two daughters: Janet (Wayne) Kreitzer of Cresco and Kay Zimmerman of Waukon and special friend Don Hrdina of Rochester, Minn.; two grandchildren: Scott Kreitzer of Mason City and Krissy Kreitzer of Cresco and special friend Bryon Houlgrave; two sisters-in-law: Sally Zimmerman and Shirley Rose; a brother-in-law: Charles Bakke; two step sisters-in-law: Arlene Rooney and Sylvia Hayes; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert who died in 1986; her parents; and two sisters: Leone (Henry) Lippe and Stelle (Fiske) O'Hara.

 CRESCO - Memorial services for Christopher "Moose" S. Toney will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 11, 2011 at Conway Funeral Home in Cresco with Rev. Michael Massa officiating.
Christopher, 44, died suddenly Monday, Jan. 31, 2011 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn.
Christopher S. Toney was born in Wilmington, Del., the son of Heidi and Gordon "Jack" Toney. He attended Howard Career Center High School in New Castle, Del. graduating in 1984.
Chris had a long-term career with DOT Foods in Williamsport, Md., followed by a job at Wal-mart, Decorah, and most recently at Grain Millers Inc., in St. Ansgar.
Chris enjoyed fishing, camping, hanging out with his friends, watching football, and playing with his young cousins.
Chris is survived by his mother: Heidi Toney of Cresco; cousins: Ede (Mark) Rollins of Decorah, Todd (Christy) Hofsaess of Des Moines, and James (Sandee Messina) Coates of Succasunna, N.J.; uncle: Fred Hofsaess of Perkasie, Pa.; and extended family and friends.
Chris was preceded in death by his father.

Visitation was held Monday from 4-7 p.m. at the Balik Funeral Home in Spillville with a rosary at 5 p.m. Visitation continued after 10 a.m. at the church on Tuesday.

Marlene, 79, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2011 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.
Marlene Marie Trachta was born June 19, 1931, in New Hampton, the daughter of William J. and Rose K (Bakula) Shores. She was baptized and confirmed in her faith at Holy Trinty Church in Protivin, and attended the rural school near her home. She graduated from high school in Lawler. Following graduation, she worked in the New Hampton Hospital.
On June 20, 1955, she married Joseph Trachta at Holy Trinity Church in Protivin. They made their home in Cresco. Through the years she helped raise many children by babysitting or daycare.
Babe was an active member of Notre Dame Church and its rosary society. She was a member of Tops and the American Legion Auxiliary. She and Joe liked to dance and went to a lot of dances. They were good dancers. She also enjoyed word puzzles, going for afternoon drives and spending time with family and friends.
She is survived by two daughters: Julie (Allan) Daskam and Jolene Trachta, both of Cresco; two granddaughters: Megan (Curt North) Daskam of New Auburn, Wis. and Lindsay (Luke) Johnson of Racine, Minn.; three great-grandchildren: Beau Allan Johnson and Cora Mae Johnson and Ean Parker North; and many nieces and nephews.
Marlene was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph in 2009; her parents; two sisters: Mildred Barthelme and Loretta "Goldie" Steger.

CRESCO - Funeral services for Leo F. Langreck of Cresco were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011 at Notre Dame Parish in Cresco with Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Leo, 92, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2011 at the Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco.
Leo Ferdinand Langreck was born March 7, 1918, the son of John H. and Catherine (Schmitt) Langreck. He attended St. Luke's grade school in St. Lucas, and graduated in 1939 from Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, Ill.
On March 8, 1943, he married Adella Schmitt at the St. Luke's Church in St. Lucas. They moved four miles west of St. Lucas for six years, then to Cresco, where they owned a 160 acre farm from 1948 to 1969. After selling their farm they moved to West Union in 1969 to work for Heying Enterprises. Leo was manager of maintenance and electrical work, requiring being on call 24 hours a day. In 1977 Leo and Adella purchased 15 acres north of Protivin and built a new home there in 1980. The other two homes on the property were utilized as rental property. They continued to live on this acreage until 1999 when they moved to Cresco.
Leo has always enjoyed woodworking, making furniture and crafts. He also enjoyed inventing, fishing, traveling and gardening.
Leo is survived by his wife Adella of Cresco; five daughters: Marji Morris of Wesley, Maryln (Ken) Shores of Ridgeway, Norma (Mick) Steele of Forest City, Nancy (Craig) Ellingson of Ridgeway, and Mary (Bill) Sykes of Gainsboro, Tenn.; one son: Leon Langreck of Cresco; 15 grandchildren: Briggette, Kim and Gary Lee; Scott and Susan; Tanya and Samara; Shaun, Bryan and Elizabeth; Lonnie and Laura; and Shaw, Danny and Jamie; three step grandchildren: Steph, Chris and Nikki; 23 great-grandchildren: Ben, Brad, Alix and Dakota; Courtney, Jacob, Blair, Steph and Zach; Isaiah, Kobe, Skylar, Savannah and Kenedee; Bryce, Madison, James, Noah, Megan, Amelia and Evan; Lincoln; and Tyler; nine step great-grandchildren: one great-great-grandson: Connor; five sisters: Josephine Heying of West Union, Theresa Zipse of Austin, Minn., Collette Ameling of West Union, Delores Buchheit of Fort Atkinson, Joyce (Jack) Zoulek of Spillville; and brothers: Ray (Ruth) Langreck of Cresco, Victor Langreck of Cresco, and Roger (Germaine) Langreck of St. Lucas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson: Sean Rojohn; and two sisters: Lena Pitzenberger and Lucy McNamera.

RIDGEWAY - Funeral services for Hazel J. Benson were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011 at Orleans Lutheran Church in rural Cresco. Interment was in Orleans Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Cresco.
Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.
Hazel, 86, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2011 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.
Hazel Jeanette Benson was born June 18, 1924 in Glenwood Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, the daughter of Julianna (Hill) and Julius Tangen. She attended rural school near her home in Glenwood and lived in Winneshiek County her entire life.
On Feb. 24, 1953 she married Marvin Benson at the Hesper Lutheran parsonage. They lived on the Benson farm north of Ridgeway, where they raised four children. Hazel was a member of the Orleans Lutheran Church and involved with the Orleans Ladies Aid and the Deborah Circle. She lived on the farm until the end of July, 2010 when she entered the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.
She is survived by three daughters: Muriel (Andy) Janneke of Vadnais Heights, Minn., Marvel of Rochester, Minn. and Mayme (Steve) Johnson of Cottage Grove, Minn.; one son: Mark of Ridgeway; three grandchildren: Scott and Ann Janneke, and Samantha Johnson; a step-grandchild: Sarah Johnson; two step-great-grandchildren: Ashlee Johnson and Avery Madison; and several nieces and nephews.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; three brothers: Philip, Sherman and Gilman; and a sister: Frances Rodas.

RICEVILLE - Funeral services for Dolores M. Irvin of Riceville will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 9 at the Conway Funeral Home in Riceville with a 5 p.m. Rosary and a 6 p.m. Prayer Service. There will be visitation at the funeral home for one hour prior to services on Thursday.
Dolores, 92, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011 at the Riceville Family Care Center in Riceville.

 CRESCO - Therese Busta, 89, of Cresco, formerly of Protivin died Friday morning, Feb. 4, 2011 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.
A Memorial Mass will be held this summer at Assumption Parish, Little Turkey. Inurnment will be held in St. Mary's Cemetery in Little Turkey. Times and dates to be announced.
Hugeback's Protivin Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Therese Busta was born June 5, 1921, in Little Turkey, Iowa, the daughter of Wencel Anton (W.A.Jim) and Anna (Jirak) Busta. She graduated from Rudolphinum High School, Protivin in 1939. She attended Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) in Cedar Falls and then taught country school. When her parents moved from Little Turkey to New Hampton, Therese moved to Chicago. She worked with the well-known architect, Stanley Tigerman. Therese then moved to Fort Myers, Fla., trained to be a cosmetologist and worked in salons until she decided to drive her father's 1951 Nash Rambler to Los Angeles. She became an accountant for Volkswagen for many years, and later joined a Los Angeles Cadillac dealership. Upon returning from a vacation day one summer, she learned that Elvis Presley had visited the dealership that day and purchased three Cadillacs.
Therese spent 25 years in Los Angeles and hosted each sibling at least once during that time. She attended night classes at five different colleges, studying accounting, data processing, art appreciation, and art history.
In 1987, Therese retired and moved back to Protivin. When the moving van arrived from California with all of her possessions, the first item to exit was her 1971 yellow VW Bug. In 1998, Therese moved to Cresco.
She traveled to Europe six times as well as to China, Tahiti, Fiji, Panama Canal, Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii and to most of the lower 48 states. One of her favorite trips was to Australia and New Zealand. Her most recent trip was in 2008 when she accompanied her nephew, Bob (Betty) Soukup to San Jose, Calif. where her niece Margaret (Soukup) Hoge and husband Hal hosted them and treated them to a two-day limousine tour of Napa Valley.
Therese is survived by numerous nieces and nephews; including Bob (Betty) Soukup of New Hampton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and all of her eight siblings: Anna Vrba, Eleanor Skoda, Regina Pechota, Robert Busta, Mayme Vrba, Nellie Denner, Clara Soukup and Benjamin Busta.

 SPILLVILLE - A Mass of Christian Burial for Evelyn M. Lentz of Spillville was held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. Giftbearers were Evelyn's children. Lector was Joan Lentz, organist was Doris Thompson and cantor was Dan Silhacek. St. Wenceslaus choir sang: "Be Not Afraid", "Gift of Finest Wheat", "Amazing Grace", "Goin Home", "How Great Thou Art". Pallbearers were: Patrick Lentz, Eric Lentz, Amy Oldham, Larry Mikota, Dave Ludwig and Stan Shevik. Interment was in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery in Spillville.
Balik Funeral Home in Spillville handled the arrangements.
Evelyn, 90, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011 at Wellington Place in Decorah where she had made her home since Nov. 6, 2009.
Evelyn Marie Lentz was born on December 19, 1920, the daughter of John and Mary (Baburek) Shimek on the family farm near Spillville. She attended country school in the area.
On Oct. 14, 1947, she married William Lentz at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville. They farmed west of Spillville for many years.
Evelyn enjoyed her farm animals, fishing and gardening. She was a lifetime member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church.
Evelyn's survivors include two sons: Tom (Becky) Lentz and Dan (Joan) Lentz, both of rural Calmar; one daughter: Catherine (Bill) Woods of The Dalles, Ore.; three grandchildren: Patrick and Eric Lentz, and Amy (Leland) Oldham; and two great-grandchildren: Parker and Nathan Oldham.
She was preceded in death by her husband: William Lentz on Feb. 21, 1999; her parents; three brothers: Jim, Frank and Paul Shimek; and three sisters-in-law: Emma (Bill) Humpal, Caroline (Louis) Tupy and Mathilda Lentz.

 RICEVILLE - Funeral services for Vern J. Gronwoldt of Riceville were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 11, 2011 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville with Pastor Michael Parris officiating. Interment was in Sunnyside Memorial Garden at Charles City.
Conway Funeral Home of Riceville handled the arrangements.
Vern, 87, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2011 at his home.
Vern John Gronwoldt was born March 11, 1923 in Deerfield Township, Chickasaw County, near Alta Vista, Iowa, the son of Henry J. and Dora K. (Schade) Gronwoldt. He was baptized and confirmed in his faith at the Zion Lutheran Church in Alta Vista. Vern attended the rural school near his home and graduated from Alta Vista High School.
On Oct. 19, 1952, Vern married Betty Jean McBride at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They made their home on a farm in Chickasaw and Howard Counties until 1986 when they retired and moved into Riceville. Work was enjoyment to Vern and he continued doing something right up until his death. He had a big garden, he had many walnuts that he would sell and give the money to charity, and he had honey bees which he would spin the honey from the hives.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; six children: Robert (Norma) of Waterloo, Gary of Burlington, James (Brenda) of LeRoy, Minn., Virgil (Tina) of Mapleton, Iowa, Jean (Ralph) Young of Des Moines, and Nancy Spooner of Des Moines; 13 grandchildren: Sarah; Gary, Ashley and Amber Gronwoldt; Brandon and Jamie Pingel; Adam, Brandi and Crystal Young; Dennis and Melissa Young; Amanda and Mercedes Spooner; Philip, Curtis, Amy and Teresa Gronwoldt; two great-grandchildren: Blake and Emma Pingel; and one sister: Edna Sir of Elma.
Vern was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Leonard, Marvin Sr. and Walter; and five sisters: Dorthea and Rose as children, Norma Bill, Esther Hurst and Alice Ross.

Lefa, 92, died Valentine's day, Monday, Feb. 14, 2011 in Longview, Texas.
Lefa Mary Somerville was born Sept. 23, 1918 in Coffey, Mo.,
the daughter of Harvey and Mamie Pash. She was raised on farms in Davies County, Mo. and Harlan, Iowa. Lefa graduated from Harlan High School on May 25, 1936, with her twin sister, Leta May and her future husband, Paul Wesley Somerville. In 1942, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Olivet College, Bourbonnais, Ill. Paul and Lefa were married in the chapel at Olivet on August 8 that same year. They set off on a life of pastoring Methodist Churches in New York, Iowa, and Oklahoma, until Paul's death on Christmas Eve 1995.
Lefa was a fine librarian, working at the Cresco Public Library and at school libraries in Cedar Rapids, Council Bluffs and Oelwein. She earned an advanced degree in Library Science from the University of Nebraska, Omaha.
Paul's family was always a very important part of Lefa's life.
She is survived by one daughter: Phyllis Somerville of New York City; two sons and their wives: Bruce Somerville and Irene Horowitz of Marco Island, Fla. and Stephen and Cameron Somerville of Long View, Texas; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one brother: Olin Pash of Harlan, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Reverend Paul Wesley Somerville; her son: Paul Lewis Somerville; her twin sister; six other sisters and six brothers.

 GRANGER, MN - Funeral services for Merland Hovey of Granger, Minn. will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011 at Saetersdal Lutheran Church in rural Harmony, Minn. Interment will be in Saetersdal Lutheran Church cemetery in rural Harmony.
Visitation will be held today, Wednesday, February 23 from 5-7 p.m. at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco and one hour prior to services at the church.
Merland, 86, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011 at the Harmony Healthcare surrounded by family.
Merland Hovey was born Feb. 5, 1925 in rural York Township, the son of Oscar and Lillian (Bjortomt) Hovey.
