 LIME
SPRINGS - Funeral services for Robert W. Moser of Lime Springs will be
held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at the United Methodist
Church in Lime Springs. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco
with military rites.
Visitation will be held at the Conway funeral Home in Cresco on Friday,
April 8 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. and on Saturday one hour prior to
services at the church.
Robert, 87, died Monday, March 28, 2011 at the Cresco Care Center where
he has made his home since Feb. 21.
Robert Walter Moser was born Oct. 26, 1923 in Mason City, Iowa, the son
of Walter and Margaret (Aulwes) Moser. He grew up in the Manly area
where he received the early part of his education. The family moved to
Lime Springs in 1939 and Bob graduated from Lime Springs High School in
1942. Following his education, he worked at Hormel in Austin until he
entered the United States Navy in December of 1944. He received his
discharge in July of 1946 and returned to the Lime Springs area and
started farming.
On June 8, 1948, he married Marcella O'Brien in Lourdes, Iowa. They made
their home on the same farm for the remainder of their lives.
In earlier years, he liked to fish, hunt and play cards with the
neighborhood card club. He liked to weld and could fix anything that was
broken. Bob was a life-long member of the American Legion in Lime
Springs. He had been on the board of the elevator in Lime Springs.
Bob is survived by his children: Neil, Kathy (Ron Verbeck) Schmitt,
Gerald (Carla), Beverly (Perry) Thomas and Bruce (Darcy), all of Lime
Springs, Sharon (Wayne) Hammon of LeRoy, Minn. and Luann Hammon of
Riceville; 11 grandchildren: Shelly Hensley, Charles and Timothy Hammon;
Casey Vobr and Caitlin Schmitt; Melissa McElroy and Scott Hammon; Alex
Moser; Truman Thomas; Ariana and Devon Moser; six great-grandchildren:
Dakota, Montana and Nevada Hensley; Keaton Vobr; Melanie and Taylor
McElroy; two brothers: Bill (Elaine) Moser of Lime Springs and Dean
(Shirley) Moser of Robins, Iowa; two sisters: Marjorie (Paul) Mohlis of
Minneapolis, Minn. and Louise Meyer of Plymouth, Minn.
Preceding Bob in death were his wife: Marcella in 1993; one daughter:
Betty Jean; one son: Warren; his parents; two sisters: Ruth and Phyllis;
and one brother: Jeff.

- A Mass of Christian Burial for Michael L. Pierce of Cresco was held at
11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 1, 2011 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in
Cresco with Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Lectors were Darrelleen
Lewis and Kimberly Krause. Gifts were carried by Dylan Johnson and
Keeaunna Wilson. The Eucharist Minister was JoAnn Dostal. The organist
was Suzanne Ollendick and the singer was Julie Andera. The pallbearers
were Chuck Pierce, Tyler Pierce, Howard Pierce, Jeff Pierce, Darrell
Riehle and Jerry Riehle. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.
Michael, 58, died Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at the Regional Health
Services of Howard County Hospital in Cresco.
Michael Lathen Pierce was born May 16, 1952 the son of Charles G. and
Ellen V. (Good) Pierce in Independence, Iowa. He attended school in
Independence, Vinton and then graduated from Cresco High School.
On June 30, 1973, he married LaRita A. Riehle at the Assumption Catholic
Church in Cresco. Mike worked at the Schley Cheese Factory until the
time of his marriage, then after his marriage he worked at Sara Lee and
was one of the last eight when it closed. He then worked at Ace Hardware
for a short time and then Featherlite Mfg., and recently back at Ace
Hardware in Cresco.
Mike loved the outdoors, enjoyed fishing time in Florida with his father
in-law Fred Riehle, he also enjoyed spending time with his dogs, and
riding his trike. He was especially fond of the time he could spend with
his family and grandchildren.
Michael is survived by his wife LaRita; two sons: Chuck (Rebecca) Pierce
and Tyler (Lindsey) Pierce; his mother: Ellen, and step father: Wayne
Halsted, all of Cresco; five grandchildren: Dylan Johnson, Keeaunna
Wilson, MaKiah "Gabby" Pierce, and Brooklyn Ann Pierce; two sisters:
Vickie Cartwright of Elma and LeAnne Lewis of Cresco; and two brothers:
Howard (Pam) Pierce of Fort Atkinson and Jeffrey (Georgette) Pierce of
Byron, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his father.

- A Mass of Christian Burial for Frank Lorenzo of Cresco was held at
11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 4, 2011 at Notre Dame Parish in Cresco.
Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.
Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.
Frank, 83, died Thursday, March 31, 2011 at Evans Memorial Home in
Cresco following a year-long battle with non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
Frank Lorenzo was born Dec. 3, 1927, in Chicago Heights, Ill., the son
of Frank and Helen (Levickas) Lorenzo. He was raised in Kenosha, Wis.,
where he worked as a lifeguard on the beaches of Lake Michigan. He
graduated from Kenosha (now Bradford) High School in 1946.
Frank attended Drake University in Des Moines on a four-year football
scholarship. He was starting linebacker on the championship 1948 Drake
Bulldogs football team, which won the 1949 Salad Bowl (precursor to the
Fiesta Bowl) in Phoenix, Ariz. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science
degree in Education in 1951.
While at Drake, he met Marilynne Ann Perrine, they married at St. John's
Catholic Church in Des Moines on April 21, 1951.
Upon graduation, Frank played for a semi-professional football team in
Des Moines and received a bid to play for the Philadelphia Eagles, but
before he could do so, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served as
an MP and recreation director at Camp Gordon, Ga. and spent 1952 and
1953 as an honor guard to General Matthew Ridgeway at the central
command for NATO military forces in Paris during the Korean War. While
stationed at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, he also
served as the base's head football coach.
After returning to the United States and receiving his honorable
discharge from the Army, Frank accepted his first teaching and coaching
job in Jewell. From there, he moved his family first to Rhodes and then
to Lime Springs, where he became principal of the local high school. The
Lorenzos settled in Cresco in 1963.
Frank taught physical education, health, and history at Crestwood Junior
High School, and at Crestwood High School, he served as head varsity
track coach and assistant varsity football coach. After stepping down
from the varsity position, Frank coached eighth- and ninth-grade
football, as well as eighth-grade basketball. During the summer months,
he was the Cresco Parks and Recreation director, overseeing the morning
arts and crafts and afternoon T-ball and baseball programs for younger
children.
In May 1990, Frank retired from teaching. An avid outdoorsman, Frank
traveled annually with friends to Canada to fish and canoe. On the
opening weekends of deer and pheasant season, he would walk the fields
around Cresco with his hunting companions. Indoors, he would spend his
time watching Turner Classic Movies, working crossword puzzles, and
playing cards and dominos. Aside from his family, his greatest passion
was golf. A member of the Cresco Country Club from 1963, Frank hit two
holes in one during his lifetime of play, including one at the Telemark
(Wis.) Country Club in 1995. He and Lynne would escape Cresco during the
winter months to golf. After spending several years in Myrtle Beach,
S.C., they ultimately decided on Corpus Christi, Texas, as their winter
home.
Frank was a member of the Cresco chapters of the American Legion and the
Kiwanis Club. He continued to substitute teach at Crestwood Junior High
for several years after retirement. He became a volunteer hospital
escort at the Regional Health Services of Howard County, and he served
for three years on the Evans Memorial Home board of directors. He was
also an active parishioner at the Notre Dame Catholic Church, first as
an usher, and later as a sacristan and parish council member.
Frank is survived by his wife Lynne of Cresco; a brother: Robert of
Kenosha, Wis.; four children: Rick Lorenzo of Cedar Rapids, Kathy
Holcomb and her husband Greg of Cedar Falls, Sue Larson of Westby, Wis.,
and Steve Lorenzo of New York City; four grandchildren: Bryan Jacobs and
his wife Michelle of Salt Lake City, Utah, Cassie Lorenzo Krancki and
her husband Joe of London, England, and Erica and Helena (Ellie) Lorenzo
of Cedar Rapids; and two great-grandchildren: Gavin and Aliya Jacobs of
Salt Lake City, Utah.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant daughter.

MN - Funeral services for LaVon B. Thacher of Rochester, Minn. will be
held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 8, 2011 at the Homestead United
Methodist Church in Rochester with Jane Day officiating. Interment will
be held in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 7 at the River
Park Chapel Macken Funeral Home and one hour before the service at the
church on Friday.
LaVon, 93, died Friday evening, April 1, 2011 at the Samaritan Bethany
on Eighth Street in Rochester.
LaVon Bernadine Thacher was born May 28, 1917 the daughter of Herman and
Amanda (Walter) Miller. She graduated from Cresco High School in 1934
and attended the University of Northern Iowa for one year. She was a
rural school teacher in Howard County, Iowa from 1936 to 1939.
On Dec. 31, 1940, she married Daniel Thacher of Preston, MN. They had
one daughter, Tania, and later divorced.
LaVon joined the Mayo Clinic in 1960 and worked her entire career as a
receptionist. First, at Saint Mary's Physical Medicine and in 1965
switched to Ophthalmology (W7). She retired in 1982.
LaVon loved nothing more than to be outside socializing and gardening.
She also loved her dogs Benji and Bahley, Christmas time, entertaining
her friends, her daughter Tania and family.
She is survived by her daughter; Tania (Jim) Fleming; four grandsons:
Jesse (Nicole) Fleming, Jeremy (Nicky) Fleming, Josh and Jake Fleming;
and three great-grandchildren; Tessa, Jaylen and Braelyn Fleming.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Vernon and Milton
Miller; and sisters: Vera Moon and Maxine Halverson.

Miller of LeRoy, Minn. will be held at 10:30 a.m. on

Richard, 73, died Saturday, April 9, 2011 at the Spring
Valley Care Center after a short battle with lung
cancer.
Richard Miller was born Dec. 18, 1937 on a farm near
Taopi, Minn., the son of Lyle and Florence (Meese)
Miller. At the age of two and a half the family moved to
Iowa, went to country school kindergarten, half way
through third grade, then half way through third grade
and fourth grade to Lime Springs then back to country
school through eighth grade. He attended Lime Springs
High School graduating in 1956. He attended one semester
at Iowa State and returned to Lime Springs to work on a
farm for a short while. He then enlisted in the U.S. Air
Force in January 1957, took basic training in Texas. He
then attended Tech school in Biloxi, Miss. for radar
operator and spent two and one half years in Germany
returning to Cape Cod, Maine and worked in airborne
radar until time of an honorable discharge on Sept. 15,
1961. He worked for his uncle in New Jersey for a short
period of time and then became self employed as a
trucker for 30 years.
On June 2, 1962, he married Janis Miedema at the
Greenleafton Reformed Church. They went to live in New
Jersey until November 1991 when he returned to Minnesota
to retire and go fishing but drove truck until he
retired in Sept. 2010. Janis joined him in May of 1995.
He enjoyed bowling, shooting pool and "loved" his green
and white truck.
He is survived by his wife Janis; three sisters: Betty
(Dean) Fausnaugh of Laurel, Mont., Patricia Vandegrift
of North Augusta S.C., and Joyce Ervin of Milford, Ohio;
one brother: Jim (Judy) of Lime Springs; and many nieces
and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother:
Roy; and two brothers-in-law: Allen Vandegrift and
Edward Ervin.

Catholic Church in Protivin with Rev.

Marie Moudry and Norma Bullerman, the
Eucharist Minister was Lorraine Vopava
and the servers were Billy and Bobby
Swestka. The organist was Marlene
Pecinovsky and the special music was by
the Protivin Czech Choir. The honorary
pallbearers were Lt. Colonel Scott
Vickery, Kim Bullerman, Dr. Jamie
Hammersland, Blake Bullerman, Owen
Hammersland and Griffen Hammersland.

Bullerman, Amy Hammersland, Robert
Moudry, Ron Bullerman, Bill Berka, Don

in Holy Trinity Cemetery in Protivin.

Edward, 89, died peacefully on Sunday,
April 3, 2011 at the Cresco Care Center
where he has resided for over three
years.
Edward Charles Berka was born June 25,
1921 the son of James and Sophie (Komarek)
Berka on his parents farm near Protivin
in Howard County. He attended country
school and Holy Trinity Catholic School
and later received his G.E.D.
On Oct. 9, 1945, he was married to
Mabel Vrba at Holy Trinity Catholic
Church in Protivin by Rev. Biskup. They
farmed the family farm located north of
Protivin. This Century Farm was in the
Berka family for over four generations.
After Ed retired from farming, he became
a certified Alcoholism Counselor in
health clinics in Iowa and Wisconsin
from 1972 to 1986. In 1987, he worked as
a program assistant for the Iowa State
Extension Services which provided help
for needy families. In 2005 they moved
to Protivin.
Ed was a life long member of the Holy
Trinity Catholic Church, a member of the
Knights of Columbus of which he was a
past Grand Knight, an usher, and a
member of the Protivin Czech Singers and
choir. He was an avid musician and
played the bass horn for over 60 years
and was a member of the Protivin
Community Band. For two years, he was a
member of the Howard County Conservation
Board. Ed was also a member of
Alcoholics Anonymous for 47 years. AA
was a strong influence in his life. He
enjoyed hunting, fishing, and growing
roses.
Ed is survived by his wife of 65 years;
two daughters: Marie (Robert) Moudry of
Cresco and Norma (Ron) Bullerman of
Calmar; three grandchildren: Lavon (Lt.
Colonel Scott) Vickery of Valrico, Fla.,
Adam (Kim) Bullerman of Urbandale and
Amy (Dr. Jamie) Hammersland of Freeport,
Ill.; three great-grandchildren: Blake
Bullerman, Owen and Griffen Hammersland;
his brother: Bill of Protivin; and one
sister-in-law: Wilma Holecek of
Fountain, Minn.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents;

 NEW HAMPTON - James "Jim" T. Tucker, 45, of New Hampton died Sunday, April 3, 2011 at his home. A private family service will be held at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home at a later date.
James Thomas Tucker was born March 5, 1966 the son of Larry and Phoeba (Rodgers) Tucker in Moline, Ill. He graduated from Moline High School in 1984.
On Sept. 5, 1986, he married Terry Merritt in Rock Island, Ill. The couple lived in Andalusia, Ill. before moving to New Hampton in 1993. Jim was employed with Waste Management in Mason City at the time of his death. Jim enjoyed playing golf, watching football, and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife: Terry of New Hampton; his children: Ashley (Cory) Hammer, James Tucker, and Taylor Tucker, all of New Hampton; his mother: Phoeba (Wayne) Popp of Ionia; his brothers and sisters: Wendy (Harlan) Peters of New Hampton, Brian Van Dewalle of Moline, Ill., Scott Van Dewalle of Moline, Ill.; and several aunts and uncles and nieces and nephews.

 LOURDES - A Mass of Christian Burial for Janet C. Flaherty of Lourdes was held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 11, 2011 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lourdes. Interment was in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery.
Visitation was held Sunday, April 10 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma. A rosary was held at 4:30 p.m. and a scripture service at 6:30 p.m.
Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly along with Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma handled the arrangements.
Janet, 62, died suddenly on Thursday, April 7, 2011 at her home in Lourdes.
Janet Carol Flaherty was born July 10, 1948, in Elma, the daughter of Nicholas and Lidwina Elizabeth (Busch) Zeimetz. She was baptized on July 18, 1948, received her First Holy Communion on Oct. 30, 1955, and was confirmed on Feb. 8, 1959 all at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Elma. She attended grade school and graduated in 1966 from Immaculate Conception Catholic School in Elma.
On May 24, 1969, she married Robert Joseph Flaherty at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lourdes. After their marriage, Janet and Bob lived in the Cedar Rapids area until they returned to the Elma area in 1974. In 1977, they moved to Lourdes.
Janet worked at Elma Elementary for more than 30 years as the head cook. She loved to go to work and looked forward to seeing the children every day. She took great pride in making sure the students were well fed and enjoyed listening to their stories. Janet retired from Elma Elementary in May of 2008. Upon her retirement she continued to work with children at the Elma Day Care.
She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church where she served on various committees and was a former President of Our Lady of Lourdes Rosary Society.
Family was very important to Janet; especially her nine grandchildren. She had the most unbelievable patience and would spend countless hours playing with her grandchildren. "Grandma's garden" was a highlight that the grandchildren looked forward to each spring.

Visitation was held Friday, April 15 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Roseville gym with a public Scripture Service at 7 p.m. Visitation continued at the church one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

HARMONY, MN - Funeral services for Zachary K. Afseth of rural Harmony, Minn. were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at the Greenfield Lutheran Church in Harmony. Interment was in Greenfield Cemetery in Harmony.
Lindstrom Funeral Home in Harmony handled the arrangements.
Zachary, 62, died Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at his home surrounded by his family.
Zachary Kent Afseth was born June 9, 1948 in Decorah the son of Milo and Phyllis (Rasmussen) Afseth.

 CEDAR RAPIDS - Funeral services for Wesley J. Drahozal of Cedar Rapids were held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday at Saint Wenceslaus Catholic Church with Father Christopher Podhajsky officiating. Interment was in Czech National Cemetery. A military graveside service was conducted by American Legion Moomey-Vogel Post 727.
Friends were to call from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at Papich-Kuba Janeba Chapel West with a Knights of Columbus rosary at 2 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 5 p.m. The Czech Heritage Singers honored Wesley with a song at 4:45 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral chapel.
Wesley, 84, died Thursday, April 14, 2011 at the Solon Nursing Care Center of complications of Alzheimer's disease.
Wesley J. Drahozal was born Feb. 27, 1927 in Cedar Rapids the son of Wencil C. and Olga Ann (Hruska) Drahozal. After graduating from Saint Wenceslaus High School, he served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947.
On Aug. 7, 1948 he married Olga Marie Sindelar at Saint Wenceslaus Church in Cedar Rapids.
Wes worked at Cherry Burrell from 1947 until 1952, when he was hired by United Air Lines in Cedar Rapids. He was employed by United for 37 years, retiring in 1989. During his years with United as Freight Agent, Wes became known as "Mr. Air Freight" of Cedar Rapids.
He was a charter member of the Board of Directors of the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library and instigated its application for national recognition. Together with his friend Ed Nejdl, he was instrumental in establishing Sokol Park in Czech Village and getting the Memorial Boulder reinstalled and rededicated there in July, 2006.
He and his wife founded the Czech Plus Band in 1978.
Wes was a member of Saint Wenceslaus Church, Catholic Workman Knights of Columbus Council 909, Czech Heritage Foundation, Federation of Czech Groups, Sokol Cedar Rapids, Lodge Cedar Rapids 262 W.F.L.A., Czech Village Association, American Legion Hanford Post 5 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 788.
Wesley is survived by his wife Olga; children: Ruth Ann (Mike) McCormally of Cedar Rapids, Wesley M. (Beth) Drahozal of Des Moines, Walter F. (Jan) Drahozal of Solon, Arthur J. (Roxanne) Drahozal and Denise (Jeff) Upah, both of Cedar Rapids, Becky (Terry) McGurk of Aurora, Colo., and Peter (Annie) Drahozal of Eldridge; 20 grandchildren and 16 great-granchildren; and two brothers: Stanley J. (Barbara) Drahozal of East Stroudsburg, Penn. and Jerry A. (Joanne) Drahozal of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

She was

School.
On
June 30,
1945,
she
married
Earl
Haeflinger.
They
moved to
the
Haeflinger
family
farm
near
Alta
Vista.
They
worked
together
on the
farm and
in their
spare
time
they
enjoyed
fishing
and
visiting
with
family
and
friends.
After
retirement,
they
moved to
Elma,
where
they
lived in
the home
Lorna
Mae was
born and
where
they
were
married.
Lorna
Mae
loved
gardening,
fishing,
crocheting,
cross
stitching,
reading,
playing
cards
and
games
with
family
and
friends,
card
stamping
with her
daughter
Lorna,
watching
the Food
Channel
and
especially
loved
baking
pies.
She was
a member
of St.
Peter
Lutheran
Church
and the
LWML.
Her
family
gatherings
were
special
to her.

survived
