Elmer Heying, 93

ELMA, A Mass of Christian Burial for Elmer K.
Heying of Ionia was held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept.
7, 2010 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elma
with Father Ray Atwood officiating. Interment was in
Calvary Cemetery in Elma.
Visitation was held from 4-8 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 6 at
the Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma with a scriptural
wake service at 6 p.m. Visitation continued one hour
prior to the service at the funeral home in Elma.
Elmer, 93, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010 at Colonial
Manor in Elma.
Elmer Karl Heying was born March 31, 1917 the son of
Ernest and Mary (Elenz) Heying. He attended school in
Richmond, Minn. Elmer helped his dad farm before
entering into the United States Army on May 8, 1941. He
served in the Mediterranean Theater during WWII,
receiving the Purple Heart. Elmer received his honorable
discharge on Aug. 9, 1945. He moved to Elma and worked
as a mechanic for Gansen Auto. He later managed Heying
Skelly Service in Elma.
On Nov. 25, 1948 he married Bernice Boyle at
Immaculate Conception Church in Elma. They made their
home in Elma. Following Bernice's death on Feb. 10,
1958, Elmer married Charlotte Brown-Beaston on July 8,
1959. In 1968 Elmer was employed with Chamberlain
Manufacturing, retiring in 1980. Elmer enjoyed playing
cards, fishing, dancing, and spending time with his
family.
Elmer is survived by his children: Marinell (Ralph)
Halweg of Denver, Sharron (Dan) Adelmund of Round Lake
Beach, Ill., Donna Jacoby (Bud Eggleston) of Traer,
Cheri (Kenny) Reich of Le Center, Minn., Helen (Tom)
Geerts of North Washington, Steve (Peg) Beaston of
Centralia, Mo., Julie DiLaura of Burnsville, Minn.,
Peter (Jane) Heying of Cedar Rapids and Tammy (Russ)
Steffen of Sumner; 26 grandchildren; 41
great-grandchildren; his brothers: Paul (Jeanne) Heying
of Richmond, Minn. and Ernest (Ann) Heying of Fallon,
Nev.; and his sisters: Irma Huczek of Chicago, Ill., Gen
Linhoff of Anaheim, Calif. and Delores (Dick) Schloeder
of Richmond, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his first wife: Bernice
(Boyle) Heying; his second wife: Charlotte (Brown)
Heying; three sons: Steven, Karl and Edward; three
great-grandsons; his parents; five brothers; and two
sisters.

Burial for Joseph L. Kellogg of Decorah
formerly of Ionia will be held at 10:30
a.m. today, Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2010 at
St. Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia
with Father Mark Osterhaus officiating.
Pallbearers were: Jereb Kellogg, Jason
Bucknell, Dan Edson, Eric Wold, Mark
Hagen and Nathan Kellogg. Interment will
be in St. Boniface Cemetery in Ionia.
Visitation was held from 3-7 p.m. on
Tuesday, Sept. 14 with a scriptural wake
service at 5 p.m. at Ionia Funeral Home
in Ionia. Visitation continued at the
funeral home one hour prior to the
service on Wednesday.
Joseph, 34, died Friday, Sept. 10, 2010
after a courageous battle with cancer.
Joseph Lawrence Kellogg was born Jan.
20, 1976 the son of Larry and Nancy
(Johnson) Kellogg in New Hampton. Joe
graduated from New Hampton High School
in 1994. He then received his Associates
Degree in Biology from North Iowa Area
Community College in Mason City. He was
employed at Featherlite in Cresco,
Winnebago Industries in Charles City and
CamCar in Decorah where he was presently
employed. Joe was currently attending
classes at North Iowa Community College
in Calmar, where he was studying
Arboriculture.
On Aug. 18, 2007, he married
Rachel Giese at Mondeaux Dam Lodge, Wis.
Joe enjoyed hunting, fishing,
backpacking, camping, canoeing and
traveling. He was affiliated with
various arborist organizations.
Joe is survived by his wife Rachel;
daughter: Serina Jo, both of Decorah;
his parents: Nancy Flaskerud of
Ridgeway, Larry and Diane Kellogg of
Ionia; his grandmothers: Nora Johnson-Vobr
of Cresco and Agatha Hoffman of Ionia;
his sisters: Michele (Doug) Munn of
Clear Lake, Jackie (Ken) Zeien of
Waverly, Lisa Kellogg of Ionia, Nita
Flaskerud of Rochester, Minn., Kaya
Flaskerud of Waukon and Jenna Flaskerud
of Des Moines; his brother: Brian

He was preceded in death by his

Kenneth Alfred Creger
was born Aug. 29, 1929
in Ridgeway, the son of
Alfred and Mabel
(Albertson) Creger.
O n Nov. 7, 1953,
he married Marcella Mae
Gunhus in Cresco.
Kenneth worked as a
truck driver and at
Cargill for 25 years.
He enjoyed fishing,
hunting, and trapping
gophers, which he did
for many area farmers.
He is survived by three
sons: Greg (Becky)

Megan, Mallory and
Molly, Kevin Creger of
Cresco and Katelyn, Gary

Cresco and Adam and

He

School.

graduation,
Donald
served
in the
United
States
Army.
Following
his
Honorable
Discharge
from the
military,
he
returned
home to
farm
with his
parents.
He
continued
to farm
there
until
his
retirement,
and was
still
part of
the farm
until
entering
the
Cresco
Care
Center
in July
of 2010.
His
health
forced
him to
enter
the
Howard
County
Residential
Care
Facility
in
September
of 2009,
followed
by the
Cresco
Care
Center.
He
enjoyed
reading,
visiting
and
socializing
with
friends,
animals,
and also
played
the
accordion. 
He was a
member
of the
American
Legion,
and the
First
Congregational
Church
in
Cresco.
He was
preceded
in death
by his
parents.
He is
survived
by
several
cousins,
family,
and
friends.
Ruth
Haynes,
86

CRESCO - Funeral services for Ruth M. Haynes of Cresco will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 17, 2010 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. Interment will be in New Oregon Cemetery in rural Cresco.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Sept. 16 from 4-7 p.m. at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco and also one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.
Ruth, 86, died Saturday, Sept. 11 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn.
Ruth M. Haynes was born Jan. 25, 1924, the daughter of Werner Rewoldt and Lily Ann Rewoldt Chaney. Ruth attended country school and graduated from Frederika High School.
On Dec. 8, 1943 she married Walter M. Haynes in Frederika.
She had many jobs during WWII while Walt was in the Army. After Walt got a teaching job, they moved to Keystone and then to Cedar Falls. In 1960, they moved to Cresco when Walt became Assistant High School Principal and Junior High Principal.
While in Cresco Ruth worked a variety of jobs, one of which included driving to N. Winn. School District. She then accepted a position as Howard County Deputy Clerk of Court. After 14 years she retired in 1986.
Ruth loved God, her family, her flowers, and Bridge. She was a long time member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, and the Rebecca Circle of Cresco.
Ruth is survived by her husband, Walt; son: Allan (Barbara) Haynes of Tipton and Deb (Steve) Hackman of Cedar Falls; four grandchildren: Scott (Kristin) Hackman of Orangevale, Calif.; Rachel Haynes of Belton, Texas; Kayla Hackman of Bella Vista, Ark.; and Amanda (Isaac) Masoner of Paducah, Ky.; two great-grandchildren: Paige Hackman and Peaceful Masoner; two sisters: Marcille Buckendahl Fox of Sumner and Arlene Moeller of Cloverdale, Calif.
She was preceded in death by a grandson: Matthew Hackman; her parents; and two brothers: Leo and Elston Rewoldt.

LIME SPRINGS - Funeral services for Evelyn Eiffler of Lime Springs were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Lime Springs. Interment was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs.
Visitation was held from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 20 at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco as well as one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.
Evelyn, 85, died Friday, Sept. 17 at the Riceville Family Care Center in Riceville.
Evelyn Eiffler was born Jan. 20, 1925 in York Township, Fillmore County, MN, on a farm called "White City". She was the daughter of Ernest A. and Mabel (Osterhaus) Stockdale. She was baptized July 19, 1925 in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. She attended county school in Beaver Township District 106. She worked for her room board at $2.00 a week and attended LeRoy High School, graduating in June 1943. She worked in Minneapolis as a waitress for six months, and as a waitress in Austin until she got called to work at Hormel's Packing Plant. After working there for three months, she returned home to care for her mother, who had turned sick. She worked for other families doing housework and chores.
On July 25, 1944, she married Clarence Eiffler at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. She was confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church on July 1, 1945. They lived on a farm near Davis Corners until they bought a farm in Howard Center in Howard County, IA in 1947. Clarence passed away on Dec. 3, 1981. She continued to farm with her son, Duane.
She was active in A.L.C.A., where she held the offices of secretary and treasurer for two terms, as well as other positions. She taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, and belonged to and held offices in the Martha Circle, including President. Evelyn was also a long time member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Following Clarence's illness she became overwhelmed caring for both her husband and her mother who passed away on Oct. 11, 1982.
Evelyn is survived by her son: Duane (Irene) Eiffler of Lime Springs; a daughter: Betty Jean (Roger) Buchholtz of Elkader; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters: Margaret (Raymond) Anderson of Fredericksburg and Thelma (Don) Holmen of Dexter, Minn.; along with several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and three brothers: Louis, Vernon and Glenn Stockdale.
Viola May, 68

STACYVILLE - Funeral services for Viola S. May of Stacyville will be held at 10:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010 at the Heartland Mennonite Church in McIntire. Interment will be in Wayne Cemetery in rural McIntire.
Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville is handling the arrangements.
Friends were to call at the church in McIntire on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. and one hour before services at the church.
Viola, 68, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010 at her residence in Stacyville.
Jean Holmes, 88

WILMINGTON, OH - Funeral services for Jean S. Holmes of Wilmington, Ohio were held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 17, 2010 at the Wilmington United Methodist Church with Rev. Dean Feldmeyer officiating. Interment was in the Sugar Grove Cemetery in Wilmington.
Friends were received at the church on Thursday, Sept. 16 from 4:00-7:00 p.m.
Edington Funeral Homes handled the arrangements.
Jean, 88, died Monday, Sept. 13 at Quaker heights in Waynesville, Ohio, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Jean S. Holmes was born April 1, 1922 on a farm in Howard County, Iowa, the daughter of John W. and Ruth (Johnson) Stockman. She attended rural grade schools and graduated from Cresco High School in 1940. She attended Upper Iowa University and then transferred to the University of Iowa where she received a BA in English and Dramatic Arts. Jean began her teaching career at Osage High School in Iowa and then Nevada, Iowa where she taught English and drama.
On June 15, 1946 she married David Holmes in Cresco. They moved to Kansas and Jean devoted herself to raising her family. In 1956 they moved to Rockville, Md. and she later returned to school at the University of Maryland and earned a Masters Degree in Dramatic Arts. She was a graduate assistant at the University of Maryland and was also active directing and taking part in plays at Rockville Little Theatre as well as chancel drama at Rockville Methodist Church. Jean enrolled at the Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington D.C. and received a Masters degree in Religious Education in 1971. She was offered a position at Foundry Methodist Church in Washington where she ran an art program for inner city children. She then accepted a position at Rockville Methodist Church as the director of Christian Education. She returned to Wesley Theological Seminary and earned her Masters Degree in Divinity. Jean was ordained in 1979 and was appointed to a full-time position as Associate Minister at the Glenmont United Methodist Church in Silver Springs, Md. When her husband retired, they moved to Wilmington, Ohio and Jean transferred to the West Ohio conference. She was appointed to serve at the Fairhaven and Sugar Valley United Methodist Churches in Preble County. During this tenure, she entered a doctoral program in rural Ministry at United Seminary in Dayton, Ohio and received her Doctorate in 1989. She officially retired from active ministry in 1990, but was asked and appointed to Harveysburg and Oregonia United Methodist Churches where she served for four years. Since that time she had been busy as a substitute pastor as well as being involved in genealogy and service groups. One of the last projects she was involved with was serving on the Historical Committee for the World War II Memorial in Wilmington. She also belonged to several organizations.
Jean is survived by her husband, David; two daughters: Judy A. Mills and Elizabeth J. McAllister and their husbands, Christopher Mills and Michael McAllister and grandchildren: Gabriel and Rigitta Mills, Patrick McAllister, Megan McAlister-Wardlaw and her husband, Kristopher Wardlaw; cousins: Doris McIntire, Mary Eddy Mocha, Edson Eddy, Ellen Eddy (Roger) Bechtel, Marilyn Eddy Maly, Prisilla Eddy (Larry) Gizinski and Grant (Prisilla) Eddy.
She was preceded in death by her parents: John W. Stockman and Ruth Stockman; her brother: John Willis Stockman; and several aunts and uncles.

Paul Ristau, 82

CRESCO - A Mass of Christian Burial for Paul J. Ristau of Cresco was held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010 at Notre Dame Parish in Cresco with Msgr. Richard Funke officiating. Interment was in St. Bridget's Cemetery in Simpson, Minn. at 2:00 p.m. Preston, MN VFW Post 6893 conducted military rites.
Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.
Paul, 82, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010 at Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco.
Paul John Ristau was born March 17, 1928 in Carimona Township, MN the son of August and Ione (Drummond) Ristau and grew up in the Carimona and Preston area. He entered military service Nov. 27, 1950. He trained with infantry units at Fort Riley, Kansas and sailed from San Francisco April 7 for overseas duty during the Korean War. Sergeant Paul J. Ristau was wounded twice in one month and was awarded a Purple Heart and the Oak Leaf Cluster.
Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to Minnesota where he worked in construction in Rochester.
On July 10, 1954 he married Barbara McConnell at St Bridget's Catholic Church in Simpson, Minn. and they made their home on farms in Carimona Township where he milked cows and started a milk hauling business. Later he sold the milk hauling business to Joe Moen and concentrated on farming. He sold the farm in 1975 and moved to Cresco where he purchased the Cresco Livestock Exchange. He later sold that business and went into the trucking and order buying business until his retirement.
He enjoyed spending time with family, playing cards with friends and taking Sunday drives and cross-country trips with his favorite chauffeur, Barb.
He is survived by three daughters: Mary (Neil) Fishbaugher of Canton Minn., Debbie (Tim) Harrington of Poulsbo, Wash. and Roxie Munyon of Poulsbo, Wash.; a son: Mark Ristau of Cresco; seven grandchildren: Nikki, Corey, Bill, Rachele, Joel, Marc and Nadia; six great-grandchildren: Michael, Hanna, Payton, David, Danny and Patrick; three brothers: Russell (Donna), Vernon (Kay) and Ervin (Judy) all of Preston, Minn.; and a sister: Evelyn McGrand of Hutchinson, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, who died on July 11, 2010; three brothers: Arnold, Kenneth and Arthur; and two sisters: Esther and Ione.
Ronald Bjertness, 76

HARMONY, MN - Memorial services for Ronald D. Bjertness of Harmony, Minn. will be held at 1:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010 at Greenfield Lutheran Church in rural Harmony with Rev. Michael Smith officiating. Inurnment will be in Henrytown Lutheran Cemetery.
Visitation was held from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 28 at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel, Minn. as well as one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.
Ronald, 76, died Friday, Sept. 24 at the Gundersen Medical Center in LaCrosse, Wis.
Ronald was born Oct. 27, 1933 in Winneshiek County, Iowa the son of Alfred "Art" and Edna (Erickson) Bjertness. He attended school in Canton and then graduated from the Harmony High School in 1951. He worked for Elmer Peterson Implement until 1960 when he opened the Southside Service in Harmony. In 1964 he became a partner in Harmony Motor Service and operated that until 1978. He then was an engineer for Harmony Enterprises for 19 years. In retirement he did lawn care and snow removal, and helped transport Amish around the area.
In 1957 he married Luella Fokken and they later divorced. On Feb. 14, 1991 he married Nelda (Kiehne) Wolff.
He was a member of the Harmony United Methodist Church where he had served as trustee for several years. He was also a former member of the Harmony Business Association and had been a Boy Scout leader. He enjoyed working on small engines and antique tractors, watching his grandchildren, and traveling.
Ronald is survived by his wife Nelda of Harmony; three children: Richard (Laurie) of Harmony, Cris (Jim) Manke of Cashton, Wis. and Rachel (Dan) Engelhardt of Shorewood, Minn.; two step-children: Greg (Julie) Wolff of Monona and Bill (LouAnn) Wolff of Coon Valley, Wis.; nine grandchildren: Jennifer (Mark) Sletten of Waukon, Melissa Snow of Ft. Lewis, Wash., Ben Snow of Auburndale, Wis., Steven Snow stationed in Afghanistan, Julia, James, and Joseph Engelhardt of Shorwood, and Anna and Ella Bjertness of Harmony; five step-grandchildren: Jordan Henkels and Jaden Wolff of Monona, Elizabeth (Andre) Schmidt of Tucson, Ariz., Kent Larson of Westby, Wis., and Heather Job of Coon Valley; several great grandchildren; two sisters: Mavis (Robert) Hendrickson of Excelsior, Minn. and Lorraine Reichert of Eden Prairie, Minn.; three sisters-in-law: Carol (Walt) Ward, Diane Torgerson and Marilyn Norton all of Harmony; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister: Doris Franke.
Bruce Popken, 70

ELMA - Funeral services for Bruce E. Popken of Elma were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010 at the Gospel Light House Church in Floyd with Pastor Paul Phillips officiating. Interment was in Oakdale Cemetery in Floyd.
Visitation was held 4:00–7:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 24 at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma, with a scriptural service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation continued at the church one hour prior to the funeral service on Saturday.
Bruce, 70, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010 at home.
Bruce Elmer Popken was born Dec. 1, 1939, in Hawarden, Iowa the son of Elmer and Martha Popken. He attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Hawarden High School.
On Feb. 19, 1960 he married Pauline Christine Lindgren at the Baptist Church of Hawarden. They farmed near Hawarden until moving to a farm south of Elma in 1974. Bruce was a successful conventional and organic farmer. He was dedicated to healthy farming practices like soil conservation, ridge till, and in the last 14 years organic farming. Bruce received the Distinguished Service award for the 12 years he served as a Howard County Soil Conservation Commissioner. He also received the Howard County Master Soybean Grower Award in 1985.
Bruce was a member of the Floyd Gospel Light House Church and enjoyed the annual Gospel Sing and weekly fellowship with his church family. He volunteered as a weekly teacher at the Midwest Mission Bible Training Center for nine years and also enjoyed leading weekly Bible studies in their home.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline of Elma; three sons: Terry (Darla) of Riceville, Tim (Maria) of Alta Vista and Travis (Rachel) of Lake Park; two daughters: Tina (Randy) of Panora and Teresa (Tom) of Lime Springs; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother: James of Hudson, S.D.; and one sister: Laraine (Lynn) Thorpe of Hudson, S.D.
Bruce was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother: Larry.
