Dame Parish in Cresco with Rev. Richard J.
Ament officiating. The lector was Angie
Kappes. Gifts were brought to the altar by
Joan Wicks and Angie Kappes. The Eucharistic
Minister was Angie Kappes. Suzanne Ollendick
accompanied song leader, Bootie Kapler.

Mary, 90, died Friday, April 24, 2009 at
the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.
Mary Antonette Urban was born June 11,
1918 on the farm in rural Paris Township,
the daughter of Louis and Mary Catherine (Falada)
Urban. She attended rural school near the
farm. Following her education, Mary worked
on the farm with her family. She raised
chickens, ducks, geese, and guineas. Mary
was an avid gardener, who liked to raise
their food. She liked to do artwork and was
very good at it. Her memory for dates of
birthdays and anniversaries was remarkable.
She moved into Cresco in 2004.
Mary was a devout catholic and was a
member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church until
she moved into Cresco and joined the Notre
Dame Church. She was a former member of the
Altar and Rosary Society and when able, was
willing to do what was asked of her. She had
no children of her own, but enjoyed having
all of her nieces and nephews come to visit.
She is survived by three sisters: Leona
Urban of Cresco, Zita Shock of Waterloo, and
Theresa DuCharme of West Bend, WI, and many
nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her
parents; six brothers: Thomas, Cletus,
Wenzel, Francis, Louis, and Joseph; and
three sisters: Clara Stejskal, Helen
Stejskal and Anne Urban.

Methodist Church in Cresco. Interment was in
Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco.
Visitation was held Monday, May 4 from 4
p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Conway Funeral Home
and an hour prior to services at the church
on Tuesday.

Bernetta, 99, died Friday, May 1, 2009
at the Patty Elwood Center in Cresco.
Bernetta Kathryn Lachmich was born
November 11, 1909 on a farm in Vernon
Springs, Howard County, Iowa the daughter of
Charles and Mary Mae (Lickteig) Kapler and
has been a lifetime resident of Cresco.
Bernetta completed the eighth grade at St.
Joseph Catholic School and it was at this
time that her father offered her a chance to
complete high school or receive a new sewing
machine. She opted for the sewing machine
and became an excellent seamstress. She also
was a waitress at many local restaurants in
the area.
On December 2, 1934, she married John R.
"Jack" Burgess in Wykoff, MN. Jack and
Bernetta lived in Cresco. They moved to the
Burgess family farm on the Pole Line Road,
where they farmed together with Jack's
brother and his wife, Clifford and Edith
Burgess. It was on this farm that their two
children were born. They lived on this farm
until 1969, when they purchased a home in
Cresco, where Bernetta continued to live
after Jack's death on August 21, 1980.
Bernetta worked at several different
jobs besides helping with the farm work and
raising their children. She was a waitress
at Tucheks Cafe and Cresco Cafe, a sales
person for the KuTee Shop, and also as a
greeter at the Conway Funeral Home.
Bernetta was remarried on June 17, 1984
to William "Bill" Lachmich in Cresco. When
Bernetta had cataract surgery, Bill was
admitted to the Evans Home. Bernetta became
very involved with the Evans Home and played
piano several times a month. After Bill's
death on September 16, 1992, Bernetta
continued living in her home until August
16, 2004, when she became a resident of the
Patty Elwood Center.
Bernetta is survived by her son: Donald
(Deborah) Burgess of St. Charles, MO.; her
daughter; Sonia (Richard) Drtina of Cresco;
six grandchildren: Bryce Burgess, Breck
(Nicole) Burgess, Bratt (April) Burgess, and
John Burgess, all of the St. Charles area;
Daniel Drtina of Cresco, Robin (Dave)
Sobolik of Cresco; eight
great-grandchildren: Alanda, Brendan and
Ciara Drtina; Quentin, Jessica, and Karlie
Burgess; and Brian and Jayme Sobolik.
She was preceded in death by her
husbands: Jack and her second husband Bill;
her parents; two sisters: Regina Melvold and
Caroline Wilson; one brother: William Kapler;
one sister in-law: Kate Kapler; two brothers
in-law: Earl Wilson and Clarence Melvold;
and two nephews: Dr. Thomas Wilson and John
Wilson.

On June 9,
1944 he married
Marian Reinsvold
in Rochester,
MN. They wanted
to go on a
wedding trip but
it was war time
and tires were
scarce. They
blew a tire 100
miles from home,
finally found a
tire, and came
back home again.
Bill and
Marian made
their home on
his family farm.
Bill
attended the
Marks Country
School through
the eighth
grade. Bill was
active on the
church board,
township board
and served as a
member of the
Cresco Union
Savings Bank
Board of
Directors.
Throughout his
life he enjoyed
dancing, playing
cards, visiting
and travelling
south with
friends, and
watching the
Minnesota Twins.
In retirement,
Bill enjoyed
being an Amish
tour guide.
Bill's
children also
attended Marks
Country School
and have fond
memories of him
taking them to
school on snowy
winter days in
the trip bucket
of the tractor.
He would have to
make frequent
stops to lower
the bucket to
let the kids
out, move the
snow, and then
load the kids
back up to
continue on
their way.
Bill and
Marian loved to
play whist and
500 and taught
Denny and Lori
how to play at a
young age so
they had
partners. They
also taught the
kids to dance
around the
kitchen table
and eventually
were sneaking
them into
Matters Ballroom
with them.
Bill made
many trips to
South Dakota to
buy and sell
feeder cattle
over the years.
One of his
favorite stories
was telling
about the thrill
of going across
the swinging
bridge at
Chamberlain, SD,
with a full semi
load of cattle.

Izzy, 67, died Friday, May 8, 2009 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.
Elfriede Isolde Freisinger was born on December 22, 1941, in Niederaudenhain/torgau, Germany, the daughter of Heinrich and Johanna (Huenemoerder) Freisinger. She graduated from high school in her home town.
On September 10, 1960, she married Leonard Kubik, a serviceman stationed in Germany. Izzy came to America with Leonard and was naturalized a citizen. They made their home in Cresco, where Izzy raised her family, worked for the State of Iowa working in the Liquor Store until it privatized in 1987. She then worked at the Cresco Union Savings Bank and managed the American Legion Club. Izzy was seriously injured in an automobile accident and spent the last 12 years of her life in the nursing home.
She is survived by three children: Tom (Brenda) Kubik of Cresco, Shirley (special friend Rob Klemme) Hansen of Garner, IA, and Mark (Dana) Kubik of Cresco; 10 grandchildren: Heather Johnson, Stephanie and Kayla Kubik; Justin and Jared Dietzenbach, Kaitlin, Paige and Dalton Hansen; Leighton and Garrett Kubik; two step grandchildren: Ryan and Kayla Graham; and one sister: Hella in Germany.
Izzy was preceded in death by her husband Leonard; her parents; a step son: Mike Kubik; and five brothers: Klaus, Wolfgang, Vano, Filmore, and Yuli Freisinger.

Army on July 3,

September 29,
1945 serving in
southern France,
the Rhineland,
and Central
Europe.
On June 10,
1946, he married
Georgine Praska
at the Holy
Trinity Church
in Protivin, IA.
They farmed for
a few years east
of Protivin and
north of Saude.
When they quit
farming, they
moved into
Cresco and owned
and operated a
gas station. He
worked as a
part-time police
officer for the
City of Cresco,
then he was
elected Chief of
Police. After
leaving the city
police
department, he
was a Deputy
Sheriff for
Howard County.
He and Georgine
owned and
operated J & G
Hardware for a
number of
years.
Joe enjoyed
gardening,
mushroom hunting
and going to
"the boat", but
he especially
liked to fish.
He was a veteran
of World War II,
a member of the
Cresco Council
of Knights of
Columbus, 4th
Degree Knights
of Columbus,
Catholic
Workman, and the
Catholic
Church.
He is
survived by his

1939 she married
Lorence M.
Lundby. Mildred
and Lorence were
married for 67
years and lived
in Cresco since
1993. Lorence
died in May of
2006.
While living
on the farm near
Ridgeway,
Mildred had been
active at
Lincoln Lutheran
Church, teaching
Sunday school,
helping with the
Luther League
youth group and
participating in
the women's PTA.
She was also a
member of
Decorah Lutheran
Church and, most
recently, First
Lutheran Church
in Cresco.
Mildred
worked on the
catering staff
at Luther
College for 19
years, retiring
in 1985. She was
a 4-H leader of
young women in
the Lincoln
Sunflowers 4-H
club. She was
extremely
grateful to the
V.F.W. in Howard
County for
recognizing her
as a "Gold Star"
mother and for
all the kindness
they had shown
her over the
years.
She is

Henkes was born

1931, in Albion

County, IA, the
son of Harry L.

Henkes. He
attended the
rural school
near his home
and St. Joseph's
Grade School
then graduated
from Cresco High
School in
Cresco. While in
school, he went
out for the
wrestling team.
Following his
education, he
entered the
armed forces and
fought during
the Korean
Conflict. He
attained the
rank of corporal
in the infantry
and always
enjoyed telling
about his
experiences
during his
service. After
the service he
worked on the
road and helped
build the road
west of Protivin.
On August 1,
1970, he married
Mildred Pesek at
the Holy Cross
Church in
Schley, IA. They
made their home
on the home
place even after
they retired and
rented the farm
out. He was a
farmer at heart,
raised pigs and
enjoyed getting
together with
all the
neighbors at the
meeting place in
Schley. He
enjoyed fishing,
watching the
birds and
building bird
feeders. He also
enjoyed working
on old tractors
in his shop.
Harold liked to
build and fix
things. Most of
all he enjoyed
teasing his
grandchildren.
He is
survived by his

School. Marlene
worked at a cafe
in Lamont where
Melvin met her.
She also worked
at a drug store
in Oelwein.
On January
27, 1962, she
married Melvin
Henkes at St.
Johns Church in
Independence.
They lived in
Independence
about a year and
in 1963 they
moved to a farm
in the Cresco
area. Marlene
was a farm wife
for her married
life and raised
their children
there. They
moved into town
in 2008.
Marlene
enjoyed going to
Bingo, playing
golf, but didn't
think she was
very good, and
enjoyed having
Sunday dinner,
but somebody
needed to be
there to eat it.
Her family was
very important
to her and she
enjoyed
attending her
children's
events and now
her
grandchildren's
events.
She is
survived by her

Rita Monthy, 76
Funeral services for Rita C. Monthy of Cresco, IA were held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, 2009 at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.
Visitation was held from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Conway Funeral Home.

Rita, 76, died Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco.
Rita Catherine Monthy was born December 23, 1933 in Cresco, Iowa the daughter of Frank B. and Anna (Herold) Leferink and has been a lifetime resident of Cresco. She received her education from St. Joseph's Grade School and graduated from Cresco High School.
On June 2, 1952, she married Floyd A. "Doc" Monthy at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cresco. Floyd preceded her in death on July 26, 1995. Rita was active in the community, and worked different places such as Cresco Care Center, the bowling alley, cooked at the Hi-Way Inn, she also cooked and delivered for the Meals on Wheels Program in the area. Rita enjoyed bowling and participating in the bowling leagues, solving crosswords, reading and watching the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs baseball.
She is survived by two daughters: Kathleen (Gerald) Ferrie of Cresco; Beth Monthy of Nevada; three sons: Francis (Julie) Monthy of Cresco, David Monthy of Ellsworth, and Gary Monthy of Jewell; eight grandchildren: Josh, Cory, Jeremy, Andy Ferrie and Tiffany Swenson; Francis Monthy Jr. and Kim Steven; and Allisha Orth; seven great-grandchildren: Ashley and Allison Ferrie; Devon and Taylor Swenson; Julia Ferrie; Gabriel and Kameron Steven; and one brother: Leonard (Ruth) Leferink of Riceville.
Rita was preceeded in death by her parents; her husband: Floyd; one son: Joseph in infancy; three brothers: Bill, Felix and Francis Leferink; and one sister: Lucille Hageman.
Melvin Ott, 82

Melvin, 82, died Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at his home.
Melvin Ott was born January 2, 1927 in Howard County the son of John and Mary (Junge) Ott. He attended rural school through the eighth grade. After that time he worked on local farms until he was drafted into the Army on April 5, 1945. His infantry training was at Camp Walters, TX, and he served with the Army of Occupation in Korea. He received his discharge on December 30, 1946. He was a 50-year member of the American Legion. Mel went to work for Hawkeye Tri County R.E.C. in March, 1947. He was employed there for 44 years until his retirement in April, 1991.
On September 3, 1952 he married Audrey Milbrath at First Lutheran Church. Mel was an active member of First Lutheran Church.
He enjoyed reading, fishing, hunting, and tending his garden. Mel was always ready to go for coffee with his friends.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Audrey; son: Jim and wife Jo of Urbandale, IA; grandson: Brad and fiance Erin McCoy; grandson: Marc; three sisters: Lucille Borseth, Joyce Ormsby and Janice Mollenjoff; two brothers: Orvald (Lenora) and Francis (Gerry); along with many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Alvera Richardson and Irene Pittelko; and four brothers: Ervin, Florian, Herbert and John.
Richard Schoeberl, 55
Funeral services for Richard "Rick" Schoeberl of Waterloo, IA were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, 2009 at St. Edward Catholic Church in Waterloo. Interment was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Waterloo.

Richard Schoeberl was born December 1, 1953, in Cresco, IA the son of Eugene and Elsie (Pecinovsky) Schoeberl.
On November 12, 1977, he married Susan "Sue" Reidy in Manchester.
Rick graduated from Crestwood High School, Cresco in 1972 and from the University of Northern Iowa in 1977. He was employed with John Deere since 1977.
He was a Cub Scout Pack Leader and Cubmaster for five years and was involved with St. Edward Jr. High Football for 18 years. Rick loved spending time with his family and especially his new role of "Papa". He enjoyed his Canada trips, coaching and running.
Survivors include his wife; two sons: Joshua of Windsor Heights and Jonathan (Jennifer) of West Des Moines; a grandson: Brayden Schoeberl; his mother-in-law: Mary Knipp of Independence; two brothers: Kevin of Cresco and Mark (Nancy) of Plano, TX; and two sisters: Karen Duneman of Orange Park, FL and Nancy (John) Schmauss of Cresco.
Rick was preceded in death by his parent.
Lyle Rosendahl, 80
Funeral services for Lyle P. Rosendahl of Ridgeway, IA were held at 12:00 noon on Monday, May 25, 2009 at Peace Lutheran Church in Ridgeway with Pastor Phillip Olson and Pastor Ginny Olson officiating. Congregational hymns were: "My Hope is Built on Nothing Less", "The Lord's Prayer", and "Praise and Thanksgiving". Ushers were Roger Kratz and Jerry Henderson. Honorary pallbearers were: Tommy Marhoul, Allyn Linderbaum, Brad Linderbaum, John Hove, Gene Ringoen. Pallbearers were: Knut Brown, Andrew Brown, John Budweg, Kim Bakken, Randy Bakken and Todd Bakken. Interment was in Lincoln Lutheran Cemetery in rural Ridgeway, IA.

Lyle, 80, died Thursday, May 21, 2009 at his home.
Lyle Pernell Rosendahl was born May 13, 1929, the son of Olger and Rose (Tieskotter) Rosendahl, on the family farm rural Decorah, IA. He was baptized on June 22, 1929, at the Decorah Lutheran Church and confirmed on June 7, 1942, at the Ridgeway Lutheran Church. Lyle graduated from Ridgeway High School in 1948.
On September 24, 1950 he married Rosemary Hove at Lincoln Lutheran Church, rural Ridgeway. Together they farmed crops, milked cows, and raised swine and beef. In 2008, he was awarded the Pioneer Dairyman of the year. Lyle was supportive of the Winneshiek Coop where he served on the board of directors for 18 years and 12 years as president. For the last few years he enjoyed his almost daily trip to the Ridgeway office for coffee and conversation. He loved his grandchildren greatly and enjoyed attending their events. Lyle was an active member of the Peace Lutheran Church serving on the council and one year as president.
Lyle is survived by his wife: Rosemary Rosendahl of Ridgeway; two daughters: Roxann Brown of Denver, IA and Kris (Jim) Lynch of Decorah, IA; one brother: Dennis (Sue) Rosendahl of Phoenix, AZ; two sisters-in-law: Beverly (Charlie Miller) Bakken of Cresco, IA and Carol (Sonny) Harland of Harmony, MN; five grandchildren: Nathaniel Knut (Molly) Brown of Waterloo, IA, Emily Lynch of Rochester, MN, Abby (fiance Drew Sears) Lynch of Chicago, IL, Andrew Brown of Denver, IA, Molly (John) Budweg of Ridgeway, IA; and two aunts: Marj Tieskotter and Viola Palmer, both of Decorah, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Olger and Rose Rosendahl; one daughter: Kathrine Aleda Rosendahl on August 21, 1959; one son-in-law: Larry Brown on April 29, 2008; one brother: Gordon Rosendahl; and one brother-in-law: John Bakken.

Evelyn Peterson
Evelyn Walker was born March 30, 1929.
She is survived by four children, Rick, Dennis, Suzzette and Diana; two sisters, Irene (John) Lambert and Edna (Mike) Pickar; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Russell after 52 years of marriage.
Loretta Kehret
Funeral services for Loretta Kehret will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity United Methodist Church. Pastor Gary Van Wert will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.
Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5-8 p.m. Monday. Visitation will continue at the church an hour prior to the service.
Loretta Lillian Moltz Kehret was born May 25, 1918, at Huron S.D., the daughter of Fred and Martha (Dahlke) Moltz. She received her education at Wolsey, S.D. and graduated from Charles City High School and Hamilton Business College. On July 5, 1944, she was united in marriage to Oscar Kehret at Austin, Minn. Loretta worked for Equitable Life Insurance from 1939-1944, the Adjutant General of Texas from 1944-1945 and for over 22 years at Oliver/White Farm Equipment Company. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Faith Circle, Charles City Senior Citizens, and retired UAW Workers. Her interests included gardening, flowers, sewing, wildlife, horses and listening to gospel music. Loretta looked forward to sharing her life with her family, always taking special interest in her grandchildren.
Living family members include two sons, Douglas (Maxine) Kehret of Waterloo and Dale (Colleen) Kehret of Charles City; five grandchildren, Mindy (Mitch) McIntosh, Dan (Alissa) Kehret, Bill Kehret, Kelly (Brian) Johnson and Jennifer Kehret; a great grandson, Eli Kehret; and two sisters-in-law, Leona Kehret of Pinetop, Ariz. and Eloise (Glenn) Petersen of Urbandale.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on April 24, 2003; two sisters, Hazel Teeple and Evelyn Langbehn; and two brothers, Archie Moltz and V.F. “Bud” Moltz.
