Sister Lea
Henkes
A Memorial
Service for
Sister Lea
Henkes, FSPA was
held at 7:00
p.m. on
Wednesday, July
19, 2006 at
Cedar Memorial
Funeral Home in
Cedar Rapids.
Friends were to
call after 3:15
p.m. on
Thursday, July
20 at St. Rose
Convent in La
Crosse. A prayer
service was held
that evening at
7 p.m. in Mary
of the Angels
Chapel. Rev.
Thomas O'Neill,
chaplain at
Viterbo
University
presided at the
Mass of
Christian Burial
in Mary of the
Angels Chapel on
Friday, July 21
at 10:30 a.m.
Interment was in
Gate of Heaven
Cemetery in La
Crosse.
Sister Lea, 73,
died Monday,
July 17, 2006 at
her apartment in
Hiawatha, IA.
She was in the
47th year of her
religious
profession.
Sister Lea
Henkes was born
to Harry and
Esther (Herold)
Henkes on May 1,
1933 in Cresco,
IA. At her
baptism she was
given the name
Olive Margaret.
She attended St.
Joseph's School
in Cresco,
staffed by the
School Sisters
of Notre Dame
and Cresco
Public High
School. After
graduating from
high school,
Olive took a
secretarial
position at the
high school.
During those
years her family
relationships
grew ever
deeper. After
wrestling with
the "empty"
feeling within
her, Olive began
to entertain the
idea of a
religious
vocation.
Because she had
a special
devotion to the
Blessed
Sacrament, she
would often stop
for a visit in
church. When
Olive saw a
brochure from
the Franciscan
Sisters of
Perpetual
Adoration, she
knew that was
where she wanted
to be. She
entered St. Rose
Convent on
September 7,
1956.
Olive was
received into
the novitiate on
August 12, 1957,
and was given
the name Sister
Lea. She made
first profession
of vows on
August 12, 1959,
and final vows
on August 10,
1964.
After earning a
bachelor's
degree from
Viterbo College
in music
education and
piano and a
master's degree
from the
University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee
in music history
and literature,
Sister Lea
ministered in
the field of
music education
for 22 years in
elementary and
high schools in
Iowa,
California, and
Wisconsin. She
also served her
religious
community as
secretary for
the Central
Province from
1975-1979.
Sister Lea was
parish liturgist
for 12 years in
Spokane, WA,
Beaverton, OR,
Dubuque and
Decorah, IA.
After caring for
her parents
until their
deaths, she
devoted her time
to publishing
music as editor,
composer and
arranger.
For a time she
worked for
Franciscan
Communications
in California
and Oregon
Catholic Press.
In recent years
Sister Lea
volunteered at
Prairiewoods
Franciscan
Spirituality
Center in
Hiawatha.
Community
members, family,
and friends
remember sister
Lea as a
talented
musician, a
woman who
enjoyed life,
and a faithful
religious
devoted to
prayer and the
Eucharist. She
was an avid
gardener. As an
accomplished
pianist Sister
Lea was often
called upon to
prepare music
for community
events. Her
delightful sense
of humor and
cheerfulness
attracted people
to her. She took
recruiting new
members to
religious life
as a personal
responsibility.
Sister Lea was a
member of the
Dubuque Area
Vocation
Association and
served on the
FSPA Membership
Promotion Team.
Sister Lea is
survived by her
Franciscan
Community; two
brothers: Mr.
and Mrs. Melvin
Henkes and Mr.
and Mrs. Harold
Henkes, all of
Cresco, IA; two
sisters: Verna (Darold)
Dralle and
Charlotte Henkes
of Wabasha, MN;
brother-in-law:
Ron Weis of
Minneapolis, MN;
and nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded
in death by her
parents; and a
sister: Shirley.
